A few Galactic objects are known to be variable sources of photons with energies above 100 GeV. These systems are mostly binaries, where variability can often be connected to the orbital period. Particle acceleration and gamma-ray production processes in binaries are generally not well understood. We present here an overview of VERITAS observations of binary systems at very-high energies (VHE) with emphasis on LS I +61 303 and 1A0535+262. The results are discussed in the context of recent observations of RXTE, Swift and Fermi LAT at X- and Gamma-ray energies.
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes is used in an intensive observation program focused on the discovery of VHE (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray-emitting blazars. Since VERITAS began full-scale operation in 2007, more than 1000 hours of observation, on ~90 targets, have been devoted to the VHE blazar discovery effort and to timely follow-up in multi-wavelength (MWL) observation campaigns. These data have resulted in the discovery of VHE emission from 10 blazars (6 HBLs and 4 IBLs). A summary of these VHE discoveries is presented.
VERITAS is a major ground-based detector of very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays and cosmic rays. 1ES 1218+304 is a moderate-redshift (z = 0.182) high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object (HBL). Detected by both the MAGIC and VERITAS gamma-ray observatories, 1ES 1218+304 is frequently monitored by VERITAS as part of its long-term blazar monitoring program. On the 3rd of January 2019, during a regularly scheduled blazar snapshot, VERITAS observed 1ES 1218+304 to have an elevated VHE flux state which continued through January 5 (ATEL #12360). HESS J0632+057 is an unidentified gamma-ray source located in the Monoceros region, probably associated with the massive Be star MWC 148. H.E.S.S. and VERITAS observations in the very high energy (VHE) range combined with Swift X-ray data indicate that this object is a new member of the elusive gamma-ray binary class. We present long-term observations of several VHE (E > 100 GeV) blazars with VERITAS, together with contemporaneous Swift and RXTE X-ray data. The observed targets include Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 2344+514. Strong flux and spectral variability is seen in Mrk 421 on nightly time-scales between January and June 2008, revealing a highly correlated X-ray to GeV/TeV connection. Modest X-ray variability is evident in Mrk 501. Observations of 1ES 2344+514 in December 2007 show VHE gamma-ray and X-ray flux doubling on nightly time-scales.
We report on the VERITAS detection of very-high-energy (VHE, $E > 100~\mathrm{GeV}$) $γ$-ray emission from the optically bright quasar OJ 287 which is located at a redshift of z = 0.306. OJ 287 has been observed to display regular optical outbursts with a period of approximately 12 years, with the last major optical outburst having occurred in 2015. To explain this periodicity, models involving a binary supermassive black hole system at the core of OJ 287, or a helical jet, have been developed. CTA 1 (G119.5+10.2) is a composite supernova remnant (SNR) with a shell-type structure in the radio band and a center filled morphology at X-ray energies. Fermi has detected a radio-quiet pulsar PSR J0007+7303 within the radio shell of CTA 1 in a blind search within its first months of operation. Located within an X-ray synchrotron pulsar wind nebula (PWN), the Fermi source is spatially coincident with the EGRET source 3EG J0010+7309. We present the the detection of the system in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays by VERITAS, with a preliminary comparison to other TeV-detected PWNe.

Since the 2011 VERITAS discovery of very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma rays from the Crab pulsar, there has been concerted effort by the gamma-ray astrophysics community to detect other pulsars in the VHE band in order to place better constraints on emission models. We present results from a deep VERITAS exposure of the distant (z=0.89) flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +55.17. The high flux, hard index and steady emission found by Fermi LAT observations make this blazar a promising very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) candidate, offering a possibility to clarify the location of FSRQ VHE emission. The VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes was used to observe ~130 blazars from 2007 to 2012. Of these, 25 were detected as very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) sources. We present here the results of the analysis of 65 VERITAS non-detected blazars, including upper limits on their VHE flux. Results from a stacked analysis of the entire data set and of smaller sub-sets (defined as a function of the redshift and the blazar class) are presented and discussed.

Non-thermal variable emission from radio to very-high energy gamma rays (VHE; >100 GeV) are the prime characteristics of gamma-ray binaries. Diffuse gamma rays are tracers of cosmic rays, providing information on their origin, interaction and diffusion through a galaxy. M 31 (the Andromeda Galaxy) is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way (d = 780 kpc) and is very well studied at all wavelengths. Thus it is a prime target for the study of diffuse gamma-ray emission. These objects enable the investigation of the main substructures of the AGN, in particular the core, the jet and its interaction with the intergalactic environment. The galaxy M82 has long been considered a promising target for VHE gamma-ray observations because of the compact starburst region in its core. Theoretical predictions have suggested it should be detectable by ground-based imaging Cherenkov telescopes like VERITAS and that a detection would have implications for the understanding of the origin of cosmic rays. Fast radio burst (FRBs) are an exciting class of bright, extragalactic, millisecond radio transients. The recent development of large field-of-view (FOV) radio telescopes has caused a rapid rise in the number of identified single burst and repeating FRBs. This has allowed for the extensive multi-wavelength follow-up to search for the potential counterparts predicted by theoretical models. The radio source 3C 264, hosted by the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 3862, was observed with VERITAS between February 2017 and May 2019. These deep observations resulted in the discovery of very-high-energy (VHE; E $>100$ GeV) $γ$-ray emission from this active galaxy. An analysis of $\sim$57 hours of quality-selected live time yields a detection at the position of the source, corresponding to a statistical significance of 7.8 standard deviations above background. 1ES 1218+304 is among a group of several TeV blazars that exhibit surprisingly hard energy spectra given their redshifts. The VERITAS collaboration has carried out an intensive observing campaign of 1ES 1218+304 in early 2009 to characterize the emission properties of one of these hard-spectra distant blazars in more detail. While hard-spectra TeV blazars are most promising for unveiling putative signatures from EBL absorption, they may also have implications on shock acceleration scenarios in relativistic jets. The recent detection by the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope of high-energy gamma-rays from the radio galaxy NGC 1275 makes the observation of the very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) part of its broadband spectrum particularly interesting, especially for the understanding of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with misaligned multi-structured jets. We conduct a search for periodic emission in the very high-energy gamma-ray band (VHE; E > 100 GeV) from a total of 13 pulsars in an archival VERITAS data set with a total exposure of over 450 hours. The set of pulsars includes many of the brightest young gamma-ray pulsars visible in the Northern Hemisphere. The data analysis resulted in non-detections of pulsed VHE gamma rays from each pulsar. VERITAS is an array of four 12-m diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona. Its aim is to study the very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from astrophysical objects. In addition to the study of blazars, the VERITAS extragalactic science program develops a comprehensive observational program of extragalactic non-blazar sources. The H.E.S.S. Galactic plane scan has revealed a large population of Galactic very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) emitters. The majority of the galactic sources are extended and can typically be associated with pulsar wind nebulae (35%) and supernova remnants (21%), while some of the sources remain unidentified (31%). A much smaller fraction of point-like sources (5 in total, corresponding to 4%) are identified as gamma-ray binaries. We report the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7. Observations performed in 2008 with the VERITAS atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope resolve extended emission overlapping the elongated radio SNR. The 7.3 sigma (pre-trials) detection has a full angular extent of roughly 0.6deg by 0.4deg. Most notably, the centroid of the VHE emission is centered near the peak of the coincident 12CO (J = 1-0) emission, 0.4deg away from the pulsar PSR J2229+6114, situated at the northern end of the SNR. The VERITAS IACT observatory has carried out an extensive survey of the Cygnus region between 67 and 82 degrees in galactic longitude and between -1 and 4 degrees in galactic latitude. This region is a natural choice for a Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray survey in the Northern Hemisphere, as it contains a substantial number of potential VHE gamma-ray emitters such as supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, high-mass X-ray binaries, and massive star clusters, in addition to a few previously detected VHE gamma-ray sources. The cores of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are very dense environments, with a high rate of star formation and supernova explosions. They are thought to be sites of cosmic-ray acceleration, and are predicted to emit $γ$-rays in the GeV to TeV range. So far, no ULIRG has been detected in $γ$-rays. Arp 220, the closest ULIRG to Earth, has been well studied, and detailed models of $γ$-ray production in this galaxy are available. They predict a rather hard $γ$-ray spectrum up to several TeV. The extragalactic background light (EBL) contains all the radiation emitted by nuclear and accretion processes since the epoch of recombination. Direct measurements of the EBL in the near-IR to mid-IR waveband are extremely difficult due mainly to the zodiacal foreground light. Instead, gamma-ray astronomy offers the possibility to indirectly set limits on the EBL by studying the effects of gamma-ray absorption in the spectra of detected sources in the very high energy range (VHE: $>$100 GeV). The improved sensitivity of current-generation atmospheric-Cherenkov telescope (ACT) arrays enables us to probe for the first time low-frequency-peaked and intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lac (LBL and IBL, respectively) objects as very high energy (VHE) $γ$-ray emitters. VERITAS is currently one of the most sensitive VHE gamma-ray observatories in the world and is particularly suited to study these objects. In this paper we will present recent results from VERITAS observations of a selected set of LBLs and IBLs.
It has been postulated that globular clusters could be sources of Very-High Energy (VHE) gamma rays, powered by milli-second pulsars. This could be due to cumulative direct emission or to plerion-type emission driven by colliding winds. In particular the southern hemisphere globular cluster 47 Tuc has been singled out as a potential source in both models. HESS J0632+057 has been recently identified as a new gamma-ray binary system. The source, located in the Monoceros region and associated with the massive Be star MWC 148, shows variability from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, displaying a maximum of its non-thermal emission about 100 days after periastron passage (at orbital phases close to 0.3). We present here the results obtained with the VERITAS and H.E.S.S Cherenkov telescopes spanning a wide time interval from 2004 to 2012.
