Models of jet production in black hole systems suggest that the properties of the accretion disk - such as its mass accretion rate, inner radius, and emergent magnetic field - should drive and modulate the production of relativistic jets. Stellar-mass black holes in the "low/hard" state are an excellent laboratory in which to study disk-jet connections, but few coordinated observations are made using spectrometers that can incisively probe the inner disk. We report on a series of 20 Suzaku observations of Cygnus X-1 made in the jet-producing low/hard state. Contemporaneous radio monitoring was done using the Arcminute MicroKelvin Array radio telescope. Two important and simple results are obtained: (1) the jet (as traced by radio flux) does not appear to be modulated by changes in the inner radius of the accretion disk; and (2) the jet is sensitive to disk properties, including its flux, temperature, and ionization. Some more complex results may reveal aspects of a coupled disk-corona-jet system. A positive correlation between the reflected X-ray flux and radio flux may represent specific support for a plasma ejection model of the corona, wherein the base of a jet produces hard X-ray emission. Within the framework of the plasma ejection model, the spectra suggest a jet base with v/c ~ 0.3, or the escape velocity for a vertical height of z ~ 20 GM/c^2 above the black hole. The detailed results of X-ray disk continuum and reflection modeling also suggest a height of z ~ 20 GM/c^2 for hard X-ray production above a black hole, with a spin in the range 0.6 < a < 0.99. This height agrees with X-ray time lags recently found in Cygnus X-1. The overall picture that emerges from this study is broadly consistent with some jet-focused models for black hole spectral energy distributions in which a relativistic plasma is accelerated at z = 10-100 GM/c^2.
This review covers the main aspects of black hole accretion disk theory. We begin with the view that one of the main goals of the theory is to better understand the nature of black holes themselves. In this light we discuss how accretion disks might reveal some of the unique signatures of strong gravity: the event horizon, the innermost stable circular orbit, and the ergosphere. We then review, from a first-principles perspective, the physical processes at play in accretion disks. This leads us to the four primary accretion disk models that we review: Polish doughnuts (thick disks), Shakura-Su…
We discuss the problem of the formation of a large-scale magnetic field in the accretion disks around black holes, taking into account the nonuniform vertical structure of the disk. The high electrical conductivity of the outer layers of the disk prevents the outward diffusion of the magnetic field. This implies a stationary state with a strong magnetic field in the inner parts of the accretion disk close to the black hole, and zero radial velocity at the surface of the disk. Magnetic jet collimation is considered, when the jet radius is hold due to magneto-torsional oscillations. The range of…
Accretion onto black holes is an efficient mechanism in converting the gas mass-energy into energetic outputs as radiation, wind and jet. Tidal disruption events, in which stars are tidally torn apart and then accreted onto supermassive black holes, offer unique opportunities of studying the accretion physics as well as the wind and jet launching physics across different accretion regimes. In this review, we systematically describe and discuss the models that have been developed to study the accretion flows and jets in tidal disruption events. A good knowledge of these physics is not only need…
From Liu and Han (2014), the accretion-dominated jet power has a linear proportionality with the accretion rate, whereas the power law index is <=0.5 at lower accretion rate. Attributing the jet power in low accretion rate AGN to the black hole spin, it implies that the jet power has a flatter spectrum than the accretion-dominated jet versus the accretion rate. The black hole must be spinning rapidly for producing such jet power efficiently, and this may allow us to find high-spin black holes in the radio-loud low-luminosity AGN.
We develop the theoretical model for the analytic description of hydrodynamic jets from protostellar disks employing the Beltrami-Bernoulli flow configuration of disk-jet structure. For this purpose we extend the standard turbulent viscosity prescription and derive several classes of analytic solutions using the flow parametrization in self-similar variables. Derived solutions describe the disk-jet structure, where for the first time jet properties are analytically linked with the properties of the accretion disk flow. The ratio of the jet ejection and disk accretion velocities is controlled b…
Using our theory for the production of relativistic outflows, we estimate the jet launching radius and the inferred mass accretion rate for 52 low-power radio-loud AGNs based on the observed jet powers. Our analysis indicates that (1) a significant fraction of the accreted energy is required to convert the accreted mass to relativistic energy particles for the production of the jets near the event horizon, (2) the jets launching radius moves radially toward the horizon as the mass accretion rate or jets power increases, and (3) no jet/outflow formation is possible beyond 44 gravitational radii…
Astrophysical jets are launched from strongly magnetized systems that host an accretion disk surrounding a central object. Here we address the question how to generate the accretion disk magnetization and field structure required for jet launching. We continue our work from Paper I (Mattia & Fendt 2020a), considering a non-scalar accretion disk mean-field $α^2Ω$-dynamo in the context of large scale disk-jet simulations. We now investigate a disk dynamo that follows analytical solutions of mean-field dynamo theory, essentially based only on a single parameter, the Coriolis number. We thereby co…
We present various instability mechanisms in the accreting black hole systems which might indicate at the connection between the accretion disk and jet. The jets observed in microquasars can have a persistent or blobby morphology. Correlated with the accretion luminosity, this might provide a link to the cyclic outbursts of the disk. Such duty-cycle type of behavior on short timescales results from the thermal instability caused by the radiation pressure domination. The same type of instability may explain the cyclic radioactivity of the supermassive black hole systems. The somewhat longer tim…
Astrophysical jets are launched from strongly magnetized systems that host an accretion disk surrounding a central object. The origin of the jet launching magnetic field is one of the open questions for modeling the accretion-ejection process. Here we address the question how to generate the accretion disk magnetization and field structure required for jet launching. Applying the PLUTO code, we present the first resistive MHD simulations of jet launching including a non-scalar accretion disk mean-field $α^2Ω$-dynamo in the context of large scale disk-jet simulations. Essentially, we find the $…
We investigate the propagation of accretion-powered jets in various types of massive stars such as Wolf-Rayet stars, light Population III (Pop III) stars, and massive Pop III stars, all of which are the progenitor candidates of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We perform two dimensional axisymmetric simulations of relativistic hydrodynamics taking into account both the envelope collapse and the jet propagation (i.e., the negative feedback of the jet on the accretion). Based on our hydrodynamic simulations, we show for the first time that the accretion-powered jet can potentially break out relativistic…
A hyperaccretion disk around a stellar-mass black hole is a plausible model for the central engine that powers gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We estimate the luminosity of a jet driven by magnetohydrodynamic processes such as the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism as a function of mass accretion rate, the black hole mass, and other accretion parameters. We show that the jet is most efficient when the accretion flow is cooled via optically-thin neutrino emission, and that its luminosity is much larger than the energy deposition rate through neutrino annihilation provided that the black hole is spinning …
A hyperaccretion disk formed around a stellar mass black hole is a plausible model for the central engine that powers gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). If the central black hole rotates and a poloidal magnetic field threads its horizon, a powerful relativistic jet may be driven by a process resembling the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We estimate the luminosity of such a jet assuming that the poloidal magnetic field strength is comparable to the inner accretion disk pressure. We show that the jet efficiency attains its maximal value when the accretion flow is cooled via optically-thin neutrino emission. …
Accreting black holes are observed to launch relativistic, collimated jets of matter and radiation. In some sources, discrete ejections have been detected with highly relativistic velocities. These particular sources typically have very high mass accretion rates, while sources lower knot velocities are predominantly associated with black holes with relatively low mass accretion rates. We quantify this behavior by examining knot velocity with respect to X-ray luminosity, a proxy for mass accretion rate onto the black hole. We find a positive correlation between the mass-scaled X-ray luminosity …
We study the effects of a thin gaseous accretion disk on the inspiral of a stellar--mass black hole into a supermassive black hole. We construct a phenomenological angular momentum transport equation that reproduces known disk effects. Disk torques modify the gravitational wave phase evolution to detectable levels with LISA for reasonable disk parameters. The Fourier transform of disk-modified waveforms acquires a correction with a different frequency trend than post-Newtonian vacuum terms. Such inspirals could be used to detect accretion disks with LISA and to probe their physical parameters.
We explore the formation, energetics, and geometry of relativistic jets along with the variability of their central engine. We study both fast and slowly rotating black holes and address our simulations to active galaxy (AGN) centers and gamma ray burst (GRB) engines. The structured jets are postulated to account for emission properties of high energy sources across the mass scale, launched from stellar mass black holes in GRBs and from supermassive black holes in AGNs. Their active cores contain magnetized accretion disks and rotation of the Kerr black hole provides a mechanism for jet launch…
It was proposed earlier that the relativistic ejections observed in microquasars could be produced by violent magnetic reconnection episodes at the inner disk coronal region. Here we revisit this model, which employs a standard accretion disk description and fast magnetic reconnection theory, and discuss the role of magnetic reconnection and associated heating and particle acceleration in different jet/disk accretion systems, namely young stellar objects (YSOs), microquasars, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs).
In the general accretion disk model theory, the accretion disk surrounding an astronomical object comprises fluid rings obeying Keplerian motion. However, we should consider relativistic and rotational effects as we close in toward the center of accretion disk surrounding spinning compact massive objects such as a black hole or a neutron star. In this study, we explore the geometry of the inner portion of the accretion disk in the context of Mukhopadhyay's pseudo Newtonian potential approximation for the full general relativity theory. We found that the shape of the accretion disk "puffs up" o…
Relativistic jets are launched from black hole (BH) X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei when the disk accretion rate is below a certain limit (i.e., when the ratio of the accretion rate to the Eddingtion accretion rate, $\dot{m}$, is below about 0.01) but quenched when above. We propose a new paradigm to explain this observed coupling between the jet and the accretion disk by investigating the extraction of the rotational energy of a BH when it is surrounded by different types of accretion disk. At low accretion rates (e.g., when $\dot{m}\lesssim0.1$), the accretion near the event horizo…
The millimeter bump, as found in high-resolution multi-waveband observations of M87, most possibly comes from the synchrotron emission of thermal electrons in advection dominated accretion flow(ADAF). It is possible to constrain the accretion rate near the horizon if both the nuclear millimeter emission and its polarization are produced by the hot plasma in the accretion flow. The jet power of M87 has been extensively explored, which is around $8_{\rm -3}^{+7}\times10^{42} {\rm erg/s}$ based on the analysis of the X-ray cavity. The black hole(BH) spin can be estimated if the jet power and the …
When an accretion disk surrounds a binary rotating in the same sense, the binary exerts strong torques on the gas. Analytic work in the 1D approximation indicated that these torques sharply diminish or even eliminate accretion from the disk onto the binary. However, recent 2D and 3D simulational work has shown at most modest diminution. We present new MHD simulations demonstrating that for binaries with mass ratios of 1 and 0.1 there is essentially no difference between the accretion rate at large radius in the disk and the accretion rate onto the binary. To resolve the discrepancy with earlie…
Theoretical models for the production of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei predict that jet power arises from the spin and mass of the central black hole, as well as the magnetic field near the event horizon. The physical mechanism mechanism underlying the contribution from the magnetic field is the torque exerted on the rotating black hole by the field amplified by the accreting material. If the squared magnetic field is proportional to the accretion rate, then there will be a correlation between jet power and accretion luminosity. There is evidence for such a correlation, but ina…
Stellar-mass black holes with relativistic jets, also known as microquasars, mimic the behavior of quasars and active galactic nuclei. Because timescales around stellar-mass black holes are orders of magnitude smaller than those around more distant supermassive black holes, microquasars are ideal nearby `laboratories' for studying the evolution of accretion disks and jet formation in black-hole systems. Although studies of black holes have revealed a complex array of accretion activity, the mechanisms that trigger and suppress jet formation remain a mystery. Here we report the discovery of a b…
We review the current state of understanding how accretion onto a black hole proceeds and what are they key elements needed to form relativistic jets. Since the theoretical progress is severely halted by the lack of deep understanding of the microphysics involved, particularly in the presence of strong magnetic fields, all proposed solutions have a status of models, and their selection has to be based directly on observational constraints.
We use the stellar evolution code MESA to study the negative jet feedback mechanism in common envelope jets supernovae (CEJSNe) where a neutron star (NS) launches jets in the envelope of a red supergiant (RSG), and find that the feedback reduces the mass accretion rate to be $χ_{\rm j} \simeq 0.04-0.3$ times the mass accretion rate without the operation of jets. We mimic the effect of the jets on the RSG envelope by depositing the energy that the jets carry into the envelope zones outside the NS orbit. The energy deposition inflates the envelope, therefore reducing the density in the NS vicini…
We investigate the dynamics of radiation in an astrophysical accretion disk around a Kerr black hole. The source of the radiation is the accretion disk itself, and not a central object as in previous studies of the Poynting-Robertson effect. We generate numerical sky maps from photon trajectories that originate on the surface of the disk as seen from the inner edge of the disk at the position of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We investigate several accretion disk morphologies with a Shakura-Sunyaev surface temperature distribution. Finally, we calculate the electromotive source of…
We investigate the consequences of acceleration of nuclei in jets of active galaxies not far from the surface of an accretion disk. The nuclei can be accelerated in the re-connection regions in the jet and/or at the jet boundary, between the relativistic jet and its cocoon. It is shown that the relativistic nuclei can efficiently fragment onto specific nucleons in collisions with the disk radiation. Neutrons, directed towards the accretion disk, take a significant part of energy from the relativistic nuclei. These neutrons develop a cascade in the dense accretion disk. We calculate the neutrin…
Despite the prevalence of jets in accreting systems and their impact on the surrounding medium, the fundamental physics of how they are launched and collimated is not fully understood. Radio observations of local compact objects, including accreting stellar mass black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs, probe their jet emission. Coupled with multi-wavelength observations, this allows us to test the underlying accretion-outflow connection and to establish the relationship between the accretor properties and the jet power, which is necessary to accurately model jets. Compact accretors are nea…
In this thesis, I study hydrodynamical models of slim accretion disks --- advective, optically thick disks which generalize the standard models of radiatively efficient thin disks to all accretion rates. I start with a general introduction to the theory of accretion onto compact objects. It is followed by a derivation of the commonly-used standard models of thin disks. In the subsequent section I introduce the equations describing slim disks, explain the numerical methods I used to solve them and discuss properties of such solutions. I also give a general derivation of non-stationary equations…
We report results from general relativistic radiation MHD (GRRMHD) simulations of a super-Eddington black hole (BH) accretion disk formed as a result of a tidal disruption event (TDE). We consider the fiducial case of a solar mass star on a mildly penetrating orbit disrupted by a supermassive BH of mass $10^6 \, M_\odot$, and consider the epoch of peak fall back rate. We post-process the simulation data to compute viewing angle dependent spectra. We perform a parameter study of the dynamics of the accretion disk as a function of BH spin and magnetic flux, and compute model spectra as a functio…
We investigate the jet launching process from accretion disks extending our recent study (paper I) to a truly bipolar setup. We perform axisymmetric MHD simulations of the disk-jet interaction on a computational domain covering both hemispheres, in particular addressing the question of an intrinsically asymmetric origin of jet / counter jet systems. Treating both hemispheres simultaneously, we overcome the equatorial plane symmetry boundary condition used in most previous studies which naturally fosters a symmetric evolution. For the magnetic diffusivity prescription we apply an alpha-parametr…
We discuss the problem of the formation of a large-scale magnetic field in the accretion disks around black holes, taking into account the non-uniform vertical structure of the disk. The high electrical conductivity of the outer layers of the disk prevents the outward diffusion of the magnetic field. This implies a stationary state with a strong magnetic field in the inner parts of the accretion disk close to the black hole, and zero radial velocity at the surface of the disk. Structure of advective accretion disks is investigated, and conditions for formation of optically thin regions in cent…
We analyse flows around a rotating black hole and obtain self-consistent accretion-ejection solutions in full general relativistic prescription. Entire energy-angular momentum parameter space is investigated in the advective regime to obtain shocked and shock-free accretion solutions. Jet equations of motion are solved along the von-Zeipel surfaces computed from the post-shock disc, simultaneously with the equations of accretion disc along the equatorial plane. For a given spin parameter, the mass outflow rate increases as the shock moves closer to the black hole, but eventually decreases, max…
The most accepted model for jet production is based on the magneto-centrifugal acceleration out off an accretion disk that surrounds the central source (Blandford & Payne, 1982). This scenario, however, does not explain, e.g., the quasi-periodic ejection phenomena often observed in different astrophysical jet classes. de Gouveia Dal Pino & Lazarian (2005) (hereafter GDPL) have proposed that the large scale superluminal ejections observed in microquasars during radio flare events could be produced by violent magnetic reconnection (MR) episodes. Here, we extend this model to other accretion disk…
We study the relation between accretion, black hole mass and jet power in AGN, by using a large group of blazars detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope and radio galaxies. Our main results are as follows. (i) The jet power of FSRQs and FRII-HEG depends on the black hole mass, which suggests that the FSRQs and FRII-HEG are in Radiation-Pressure Dominated regime. The jet power of BL Lacs and FRI-LEG depends on the accretion, which suggests that the BL Lacs and FRI-LEG are in the Gas-Pressure Dominated regime. (ii) We find that most of FSRQs and BL Lacs have $\rm{P_{jet}>L_{BZ}^{max}}$, which…
We study hadronic models of broad-band emission of jets in radio-loud active galactic nuclei, and their implications for the accretion in those sources. We show that the models that account for broad-band spectra of blazars emitting in the GeV range in the sample of Boettcher et al. have highly super-Eddington jet powers. Furthermore, the ratio of the jet power to the radiative luminosity of the accretion disc is $\sim 3000$ on average and can be as high as $\sim 10^5$. We then show that the measurements of the radio core shift for the sample imply low magnetic fluxes threading the black hole,…
Magnetically arrested accretion discs (MADs), where the magnetic pressure in the inner disc is dynamically important, provide an alternative mechanism for regulating accretion to what is commonly assumed in black hole systems. We show that a global magnetic field inversion in the MAD state can destroy the jet, significantly increase the accretion rate, and move the effective inner disc edge in to the marginally stable orbit. Reconnection of the MAD field in the inner radii launches a new type of transient outflow containing hot plasma generated by magnetic dissipation. This transient outflow c…
We present our latest results on the connection between accretion rate and relativistic jet power in AGN, by using a large sample which includes mostly blazars, but contains also some radio--galaxies. The jet power can be traced by $γ$--ray luminosity in the case of blazars, and radio luminosity for both classes. The accretion disc luminosity is instead traced by the broad emission lines. Among blazars, we find a correlation between broad line emission and the $γ$--ray or radio luminosities, suggesting a direct tight connection between jet power and accretion rate. We confirm that the observat…
Two types of correlations between the radio and X-ray luminosities ($L_R$ and $L_X$) have been found in black hole X-ray binaries. For some sources, they follow the `original' type of correlation which is described by a single power-law. Later it was found that some other sources follow a different correlation consisting of three power-law branches, with each branch having different power-law indexes. In this work, we explain these two types of correlation under the coupled accretion--jet model. We attribute the difference between these two types of sources to the different value of viscosity …
The classical diagrams of radio loudness and jet power as a function of mass and accretion rate of the central spacetime singularity in active galactic nuclei are reanalyzed by including the data of the recently discovered powerful relativistic jets in Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies. The results are studied in the light of the known theories on the relativistic jets, indicating that while the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is sufficient to explain the power radiated by BL Lac Objects, it fails to completely account the power from quasars and Narrow-Line Seyfert 1. This favors the scenario outlined…
We use global magnetohydrodynamic simulations to study the influence of net vertical magnetic fields on the structure of geometrically thin ($H/r \approx 0.05$) accretion disks in the Newtonian limit. We consider initial mid-plane gas to magnetic pressure ratios $β_0 = 1000,\, 300$ and $100$, spanning the transition between weakly and strongly magnetized accretion regimes. We find that magnetic pressure is important for the disks' vertical structure in all three cases, with accretion occurring at $z/R\approx 0.2$ in the two most strongly magnetized models. The disk midplane shows outflow rathe…
A jet acceleration model for extracting energy from disk-corona surrounding a rotating black hole is proposed. In the disk-corona scenario, we obtain the ratio of the power dissipated in the corona to the total for such disk-corona system by solving the disk dynamics equations. The analytical expression of the jet power is derived based on the electronic circuit theory of the magnetosphere. It is shown that jet power increases with the increasing black hole (BH) spin, and concentrates in the inner region of the disk-corona. In addition, we use a sample consisting of 37 radio loud quasars to ex…
Observations of accreting black holes often provoke suggestions that their jets precess. The precession is usually supposed to result from a combination of the Lense-Thirring effect and accretion disc viscosity. We show that this is unlikely for any type of black hole system, as the disc generally has too little angular momentum compared with a spinning hole to cause any significant movement of the jet direction across the sky on short timescales. Uncorrelated accretion events, as in the chaotic accretion picture of active galactic nuclei, change AGN jet directions only on timescales \gtrsim 1…
The SEDs of 18 GeV FSRQs are collected and compiled from literature, in which both the jet emission and the accretion disk radiation can be observed, in order to investigate the correlations among their jet power (P_jet), accretion disk luminosity (L_disk), and luminosity of broad line region (BLR, L_BLR). On the basis of the SED fits with the jet radiation and accretion disk radiation models, we calculate P_jet and L_disk. No correlation between P_jet with either L_disk or L_BLR is found. With a sub-sample of L_BLR for 13 GeV FSRQs, it is observed that L_BLR is strongly correlated with their …
We fit the most updated broadband spectral energy distribution from radio to X-rays for NGC 4258 with a coupled accretion-jet model that surrounding a Kerr black hole (BH), where both the jet and the warped H_2O maser disk are assumed to be triggered by a spinning BH through Blandford-Znajek mechanism and Bardeen-Petterson effect respectively. The accretion flow consists with an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) and an outer truncated standard thin disk, where the transition radius R_tr~3*10^3Rg for NGC 4258 based on the width and variability of its narrow Fe K$α$ line. The h…
A maximum jet efficiency line $R\sim 25$ ($R=L_{\rm jet}/L_{\rm bol}$), found in FRII radio galaxies by Fernandes et al., was extended to cover the full range of jet power by Punsly. Recent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations on jet formation mainly focused on the enhancement of jet power. In this work, we suggest that the jet efficiency could be very high even for conventional jet power if the radiative efficiency of disk were much smaller. We adopt the model of a thin disk with magnetically driven winds to investigate the observational high efficiency jets in FRII ra…
We perform three general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of black hole accretion designed to test how sensitive results are to grid resolution in the jet region. The cases differ only in numerics, modelling the same physical scenario of a radiatively inefficient, geometrically thick, magnetically arrested flow onto a rapidly spinning black hole. Properties inferred with the coarsest grid generally agree with those found with higher resolutions, including total jet power and its decomposition into different forms, velocity structure, nonaxisymmetric structure, and the appearance of…
Most astrophysical accretion disks are likely to be warped. In X-ray binaries the spin evolution of an accreting neutron star is critically dependent on the interaction between the neutron star magnetic field and the accretion disk. There have been extensive investigations on the accretion torque exerted by a coplanar disk that is magnetically threaded by the magnetic field lines from the neutron stars, but relevant works on warped/tilted accretion disks are still lacking. In this paper we develop a simplified two-component model, in which the disk is comprised of an inner coplanar part and an…
Magnetic fields are fundamental to the dynamics of both accretion disks and the jets that they often drive. We review the basic physics of these phenomena, the past and current efforts to model them numerically with an emphasis on the jet-disk connection, and the observational constraints on the role of magnetic fields in the jets of active galaxies on all scales.
We revisit the vertical structure of black hole accretion disks in spherical coordinates. By comparing the advective cooling with the viscous heating, we show that advection-dominated disks are geometrically thick, i.e., with the half-opening angle > 2π/5, rather than slim as supposed previously in the literature.
In this paper we study the wind accretion onto a rotating black hole in the close binary system harboring a young massive star. It is shown that the angular momentum of the accreted stellar wind material is not sufficient for the formation of an accretion disk. On the other hand, in the considered conditions the Blanford-Znajek mechanism can be activated, thus powerful jets can be launched in the direction of the rotation axis of the black hole. Importantly, no observational signatures of accretion, as typically seen from the thermal X-ray emission from the accretion disks, are expected in the…
We study the precession of accretion disks in the context of gamma-ray burst inner engines. Our aim is to quantitatively estimate the characteristics of gravitational waves produced by the precession of the transient accretion disk in gamma-ray bursts. We evaluate the possible periods of disk precession caused by the Lense-Thirring effect using an accretion disk model that allows for neutrino cooling. Assuming jet ejection perpendicular to the disk plane and a typical intrinsic time-dependence for the burst, we find gamma-ray light curves that have a temporal microstructure similar to that obs…
The standard thin accretion disk model has been successfully used to explain the soft X-ray spectra of Galactic black hole systems and perhaps the UV emission of Active Galactic Nuclei. However, radiation pressure dominated disks are known to be viscously unstable and should produce large amplitude oscillations that are typically not observed. Instead, these sources exhibit stochastic variability which may naturally arise due to viscous fluctuations in a turbulent disk. Here we investigate whether these aperiodic viscous fluctuations can stabilize the inner radiation pressure dominated disks a…
We describe some recent results on the evolution of accretion disks around black holes and neutron stars obtained in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in general relativity (GR) with the inclusion of radiation (GRRMHD).
In this paper I review and discuss the basic concepts of accretion disks, focused especially on the case of accretion disks around black holes. The well known alpha-model is revisited, showing the strengths and weaknesses of the model. Other turbulent viscosity prescription, based on the Reynolds number, that may improve our understanding of the accretion paradigm is discussed. A simple but efficient mathematical model of a self-gravitating accretion disk, as well as observational evidence of these objects, are also included.
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) around super massive black holes (SMBHs) are a potential laboratory to study super-Eddington accretion disks and sometimes result in powerful jets or outflows which may shine in the radio and sub millimeter bands. In this work, we model the thermal synchrotron emission of jets from general relativistic radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of a BH accretion disk/jet system which assumes the TDE resulted in a magnetized accretion disk around a BH accreting at $\sim 12-25$ times the Eddington accretion rate. Through synthetic observations with the Ne…
The new high energy data coming mainly from the Fermi and Swift satellites and from the ground based Cerenkov telescopes are making possible to study not only the energetics of blazar jets, but also their connection to the associated accretion disks. Furthermore, the black hole mass of the most powerful objects can be constrained through IR-optical emission, originating in the accretion disks. For the first time, we can evaluate jet and accretion powers in units of the Eddington luminosity for a large number of blazars. Firsts results are intriguing. Blazar jets have powers comparable to, and …
These notes introduce and review some of the physical principles underlying the theory of astrophysical accretion, emphasizing the central roles of angular momentum transport, angular momentum loss, and radiative cooling in determining the structure and evolution of accretion flows. Additional topics covered include the effective viscous theory of thin disks, classical instabilities of disk structure, the evolution of warped or eccentric disks, and the basic properties of waves within disks.
