A sizable charge asymmetry in top quark pair production has been observed at the Tevatron. The experimental results seem to exceed systematically the Standard Model theory predictions by a significant amount and have triggered a large number of suggestions for 'new physics'. The effect is also visible at the LHC, and preliminary results have already been presented by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. In this talk, we review the present status of the theoretical predictions, and their comparison with the experimental measurements.
We demonstrate that a purposefully normalised NNLO top pair invariant mass differential spectrum can have very small theoretical uncertainty and, in particular, a small sensitivity to the top quark mass. Such observable can thus be a very effective bump-hunting tool for resonances decaying to top pair events during LHC Run II and beyond. To illustrate how the approach works, we concentrate on one specific example of current interest, namely, the possible 750 GeV di-gamma excess resonance Phi. Considering only theoretical uncertainties, we demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish pp -> Ph…
We study the sensitivity of top pair production with six-fermion decay at the LHC to the presence and nature of an underlying Z' boson, accounting for full tree-level Standard Model ttbar interference, with all intermediate particles allowed off-shell. We concentrate on the lepton-plus-jets final state and simulate experimental conditions, including kinematic requirements and top quark pair reconstruction in the presence of missing transverse energy and combinatorial ambiguity in jet-top assignment. We focus on the differential mass spectra of the cross section and asymmetry observables, espec…
The sensitivity of top quark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider to the presence and nature of an underlying Z' boson is studied, accounting for six-fermion decay with full tree-level Standard Model ttbar interference and all intermediate particles allowed off-shell. Focus is placed on the lepton-plus-jets final state, emulating experimental conditions, including kinematic requirements and top quark pair reconstruction in the presence of missing transverse energy and combinatorial ambiguity in jet-top assignment. Considering a resonance with mass of 4 TeV, and assuming 300 inverse fb …
We study top quark pair production in association with a Z boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and investigate the prospects of measuring the couplings of top quarks to the Z boson. To date these couplings have not been constrained in direct measurements. Such a determination will be possible for the first time at the LHC. Our calculation improves previous coupling studies through the inclusion of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in production and decays of all unstable particles. We treat top quarks in the narrow-width approximation and retain all NLO spin correlations. To det…
We present a search strategy for the first Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode of the Higgs boson in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with a deformed metric. We study the production of this massive excitation in association with a ttbar pair at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The KK Higgs primarily decays into a boosted ttbar final state and we then end up with an interesting four-top final state of which two are boosted. The boosted products in the final state improve the sensitivity for the search of the KK Higgs in this channel whose production cross-section is otherwise rather small. Ou…
Linear e+e- colliders provide a rich set of opportunities for top quark physics, crucial for the understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking and for the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. A ttbar threshold scan in e+e- annihilation enables a precise measurement in theoretically well-defined mass schemes with small experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties. Above the production threshold, the efficient identification of top pair events combined with polarized beams provides the potential to extract the form factors for the top quark couplings with high precision and in…
Four-top production and t tbar + missing energy events at multi TeV e+e- colliders
The charge asymmetry in top quark production at hadron colliders is sensitive to beyond-the-Standard-Model four-fermion interactions. In this study we compare the sensitivity of cross-section and charge asymmetry measurements to effective operators describing four-fermion interactions and study the limits on the validity of this approach. A fit to a combination of Tevatron and LHC measurements yields stringent limits on the linear combinations $C_1$ and $C_2$ of the four-fermion effective operators.
The charge asymmetry in hadronic top-antitop-quark production is a powerful test observable of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Since its origin in terms of Feynman diagrams is distinct from charge-symmetric top-antitop production, probing the charge asymmetry provides complementary information to cross section measurements. Furthermore, asymmetric observables offer new ways to distinguish new physics beyond the standard model. This article summarizes prospects to investigate the top-quark charge asymmetry at the LHC in and beyond the standard model. Particular attention is given to observ…
The forward LHCb acceptance offers the possibility of measuring the top-quark pair asymmetry in a kinematic region that does not receive overwhelming dilution from the symmetric gluon-fusion channel. To investigate this possibility, two leptonic final states are identified, and analysis strategies are proposed for each channel with 14~TeV data. Leading fixed-order predictions are then provided for the relevant leptonic asymmetry variables in each channel. If backgrounds can be experimentally constrained, statistically, a non-zero asymmetry is estimated to be observable beyond 5$σ$ confidence l…
Motivated by the $2.8σ$ discrepancy observed between the BaBar measurement and the Standard Model prediction of the CP asymmetry in $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$ decays, as well as the prospects of future measurements at Belle II, we revisit this observable in this paper. Firstly, we reproduce the known CP asymmetry due to $K^0 -\bar{K}^0$ mixing by means of the reciprocal basis, which is convenient when a $K_{S(L)}$ is involved in the final state. As the $Kπ$ tensor form factor plays a crucial role in generating a non-zero direct CP asymmetry that can arise only from the interference of vector and tensor op…
The top quark mass plays an important role in a variety of discussions both within and beyond the Standard Model. However, a precise determination of a theoretically well-defined top quark mass is still missing. Towards a precise determination of a theoretically well-defined top quark mass at the LHC, we propose a method which uses lepton energy distribution and has a boost-invariant nature. We investigate its experimental viability by performing a simulation analysis for ttbar production process and lepton+jets decay channel at the leading order. We estimate several major uncertainties in the…

The energy asymmetry in top-antitop-jet production is an observable of the top charge asymmetry designed for the LHC. We perform a realistic analysis in the boosted kinematic regime, including effects of the parton shower, hadronization and expected experimental uncertainties. Our predictions at particle level show that the energy asymmetry in the Standard Model can be measured with a significance of $3σ$ during Run 3, and with more than $5σ$ significance at the HL-LHC. Beyond the Standard Model the energy asymmetry is a sensitive probe of new physics with couplings to top quarks. In the frame…
The unique forward LHCb acceptance opens the possibility for performing precision Standard Model (SM) processes in a kinematical regime beyond the reach of both ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this article we discuss the feasibility of performing $W^{\pm}j$ measurements with 14 TeV LHCb data, and find that the leptonic asymmetry at high pseudorapidity, with appropriate cuts on the associated jet, can provide a factor of three reduction on the $d$ quark PDF uncertainty in a region of Bjorken $x > 0.5$.
