It is shown that the observability of a large class of operations on mixed states is fundamentally limited. We consider trace preserving, unital operations. This class includes unitary and perfect premeasurement operations. An upper bound on the trace distance between an untransformed state and a state transformed by one of these operations is derived. The bound is dependent only on the purity of the state. In the case of maximal mixedness, the bound implies all operations of this class are unobservable.
Twin observables, i.e. opposite subsystem observables A+ and A- that are indistinguishable in measurement in a given mixed or pure state W, are investigated in detail algebraicly and geometrically. It is shown that there is a far-reaching correspondence between the detectable (in W) spectral entities of the two operators. Twin observables are state-dependently quantum-logically equivalent, and direct subsystem measurement of one of them ipso facto gives rise to the indirect (i.e. distant) measurement of the other. Existence of nontrivial twins requires singularity of W. Systems in thermodynami…
It is shown that for each mixed state there exists a Schmidt (super state vector) decomposition in terms of Hermitian operators. Its utilization for finding all twins is illustrated in full detail in the case of the two spin-one-half-particle states with maximally disordered subsystems (mixtures of Bell states).
We present observable upper bounds of squared concurrence, which are the dual inequalities of the observable lower bounds introduced in [F. Mintert and A. Buchleitner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 140505 (2007)] and [L. Aolita, A. Buchleitner and F. Mintert, Phys. Rev. A 78, 022308 (2008)]. These bounds can be used to estimate entanglement for arbitrary experimental unknown finite-dimensional states by few experimental measurements on a twofold copy $ρ\otimesρ$ of the mixed states. Furthermore, the degree of mixing for a mixed state and some properties of the linear entropy also have certain relations…
It is pointed out that every mixed state statistical operator is, up to a normalization constant, a super state vector in the Hilbert space of linear Hilbert-Schmidt operators acting in the state space of the quantum system. Hence, the well understood Schmidt canonical expansion of ordinary state vectors can be carried over to mixed states. In particular, it can be utilized for evaluating all the twins, i. e., the opposite-subsystem observables the measurement of one of which is, on account of entanglement, ipso facto also a measurement of the other. This is illustrated in full detail in the c…
We present observable lower and upper bounds for the entanglement of formation (EOF) and quantum discord (QD), which facilitates estimates of EOF and QD for arbitrary experimental unknown states in finite-dimensional bipartite systems. These bounds can be easily obtained by a few experimental measurements on a twofold copy $\varrho\otimes\varrho$ of the mixed states. Based on our results, we use the experimental measurement data of the real experiment given by Schmid \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 260505 (2008)] to obtain the lower and upper bounds of EOF and QD for the experi…
We focus on characterizing entanglement of high dimensional bipartite states using various statistical correlators for two-qudit mixed states. The salient results obtained are as follows: (a) A scheme for determining the entanglement measure given by Negativity is explored by analytically relating it to the widely used statistical correlators viz. mutual predictability, mutual information and Pearson Correlation coefficient for different types of bipartite arbitrary dimensional mixed states. Importantly, this is demonstrated using only a pair of complementary observables pertaining to the mutu…
In [1] Zhu and Rabitz presented a rapidly convergent iterative algorithm for optimal control of the expectation value of a positive definite observable in a pure-state quantum system. In this paper we generalize this algorithm to a quantum statistical mechanics setting and show that it is both efficient in the mixed-state case and effective in achieving the control objective of maximizing the ensemble average of arbitrary observables in the cases studied.
Quantum dynamical simulations of statistical ensembles pose a significant computational challenge due to the fact that mixed states need to be represented. If the underlying dynamics is fully unitary, for example in ultrafast coherent control at finite temperatures, one approach to approximate time-dependent observables is to sample the density operator by solving the Schrödinger equation for a set of wave functions with randomized phases. We show that, on average, random-phase wave functions perform well for ensembles with high mixedness, whereas at higher purities a deterministic sampling of…
The uncertainty relation lies at the heart of quantum theory and behaves as a non-classical constraint on the indeterminacies of incompatible observables in a system. In the literature, many experiments have been devoted to the test of the uncertainty relations which mainly focus on the pure states. In this work we test the novel majorization uncertainty relations of three incompatible observables using a series of mixed states with adjustable mixing degrees, and compare the compactness of various entropy uncertainty relations. The experimental results confirm that for general mixed quantum sy…
In quantum systems, entanglement corresponds to nonclassical correlation of nonlocal observables. Thus, entanglement (or, to the contrary, separability) of a given quantum state is not uniquely determined by properties of the state, but may depend on the choice of the factorization of the algebra of observables. In the present work, we expose and systematize some recently reported results about the possibility to represent a single quantum state as either entangled or separable. We will distinguish in particular the cases of pure and mixed states. For pure states, it has been shown that observ…
Meaningful topological invariants for mixed quantum states are challenging to identify as there is no unique way to define them, and most choices do not directly relate to physical observables. Here, we propose a simple pragmatic approach to construct topological invariants of mixed states while preserving a connection to physical observables, by continuously deforming known topological invariants for pure (ground) states. Our approach relies on expectation values of many-body operators, with no reference to single-particle (e.g., Bloch) wavefunctions. To illustrate it, we examine extensions t…
Given a mixed quantum state $ρ$ of a qudit, we consider any observable $M$ as a kind of `thermometer' in the following sense. Given a source which emits pure states with these or those distributions, we select such distributions that the appropriate average value of the observable $M$ is equal to the average Tr$Mρ$ of $M$ in the stare $ρ$. Among those distributions we find the most typical one, namely, having the highest differential entropy. We call this distribution conditional Gibbs ensemble as it turns out to be a Gibbs distribution characterized by a temperature-like parameter $β$. The ex…
The variance of an observable in a quantum state is usually used to describe Heisenberg uncertainty relation. For mixed states, the variance includes quantum uncertainty and classical uncertainty. By means of the skew information and the decomposition of the variance, a stronger uncertainty relation was presented by Luo in [Phys. Rev. A 72, 042110 (2005)]. In this paper, by using Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information which is a generalization of the skew information, we propose a general uncertainty relation of mixed states.
We recently showed that multipartite correlations between outcomes of random observables detect quantum entanglement in all pure and some mixed states. In this followup article we further develop this approach, derive a maximal amount of such correlations, and show that they are not monotonous under local operations and classical communication. Nevertheless, we demonstrate their usefulness in entanglement detection with a single random observable per party. Finally we study convex-roof extension of the correlations and provide a closed-form necessary and sufficient condition for entanglement i…
We construct a multi-observable uncertainty equality as well as an inequality based on the sum of standard deviations in the qubit system. The obtained equality indicates that the uncertainty relation can be expressed more accurately, and also can be used to detect the mixedness of the system. Meanwhile, the new uncertainty inequality can provide a tighter lower bound, and the tightness can be maintained at a high level even in an open system. Furthermore, the deficiency of the uncertainty relation, that the lower bound of the product form uncertainty relations can be null even for two incompa…
We derive an experimentally observable lower bound on concurrence of mixed quantum states in terms of an entanglement witness, relating measurements on single states with those on two copies.
We cast observable measure of quantum coherence or asymmetry as a resource to control the quantum speed limit (QSL) for unitary evolutions. For non-unitary evolutions, QSL depends on that of the state of the system and environment together. We show that the product of the time bound and the coherence (asymmetry) or the quantum part of the uncertainty behaves in a geometric way under partial elimination and classical mixing of states. These relations give a new insight to the quantum speed limit. We also show that our bound is experimentally measurable and is tighter than various existing bound…
We present a class of observables which are suitable for determining the fidelity of a state to the multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. Given an expectation value of an observable belonging to the class, we give a simple formula that gives a lower bound and an upper bound for the fidelity. Applying the formula to the GHZ-state preparation experiment by Pan {\it et al}. {[Nature (London) {\bf 403}, 515 (2000)]}, we show that the observed state lies outside of the class of biseparable mixed three-qubit states. We also show that for this class of operators, adopting the principl…
In this paper we investigate the limits of control for mixed-state quantum systems. The constraint of unitary evolution for non-dissipative quantum systems imposes kinematical bounds on the optimization of arbitrary observables. We summarize our previous results on kinematical bounds and show that these bounds are dynamically realizable for completely controllable systems. Moreover, we establish improved bounds for certain partially controllable systems. Finally, the question of dynamical realizability of the bounds for arbitary partially controllable systems is shown to depend on the accessib…
A recent proposal for mixed dynamics of classical and quantum ensembles is shown, in contrast to other proposals, to satisfy the minimal algebraic requirements proposed by Salcedo for any consistent formulation of such dynamics. Generalised Ehrenfest relations for the expectation values of classical and quantum observables are also obtained. It is further shown that additional desirable requirements, related to separability, may be satisfied under the assumption that only the configuration of the classical component is directly accessible to measurement, eg, via a classical pointer. Although t…
The limitation on obtaining precise outcomes of measurements performed on two non-commuting observables of a particle as set by the uncertainty principle in its entropic form, can be reduced in the presence of quantum memory. We derive a new entropic uncertainty relation based on fine- graining, which leads to an ultimate limit on the precision achievable in measurements performed on two incompatible observables in the presence of quantum memory. We show that our derived uncertainty relation tightens the lower bound set by entropic uncertainty for members of the class of two-qubit states with …
We present a set of inequalities based on mean values of quantum mechanical observables nonlinear entanglement witnesses for bipartite quantum systems. These inequalities give rise to sufficient and necessary conditions for separability of all bipartite pure states and even some mixed states. In terms of these mean values of quantum mechanical observables a measurable lower bound of the convex-roof extension of the negativity is derived.
Uncertainty lower bounds for parameter estimations associated with a unitary family of mixed-state density matrices are obtained by embedding the space of density matrices in the Hilbert space of square-root density matrices. In the Hilbert-space setup the measure of uncertainty is given by the skew information of the second kind, while the uncertainty lower bound is given by the Wigner-Yanase skew information associated with the conjugate observable. Higher-order corrections to the uncertainty lower bound are determined by higher-order quantum skew moments; expressions for these moments are w…
In this paper we propose a geometrization of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics for mixed states. Our geometric approach makes use of the Uhlmann's principal fibre bundle to describe the space of mixed states and as a novelty tool, to define a dynamic-dependent metric tensor on the principal manifold, such that the projection of the geodesic flow to the base manifold gives the temporal evolution predicted by the von Neumann equation. Using that approach we can describe every conserved quantum observable as a Killing vector field, and provide a geometric proof for the Poincare quantum recur…
Quantum many-body dynamics generically results in increasing entanglement that eventually leads to thermalization of local observables. This makes the exact description of the dynamics complex despite the apparent simplicity of (high-temperature) thermal states. For accurate but approximate simulations one needs a way to keep track of essential (quantum) information while discarding inessential one. To this end, we first introduce the concept of the information lattice, which supplements the physical spatial lattice with an additional dimension and where a local Hamiltonian gives rise to well …
It is argued that proper and improper quantum mixed states have no observable differences, and hence should not be distinguished. This has implications for subjective approaches to quantum mechanics, and invalidates one of the main motivations for relational interpretations of QM.
Mixed quantum-classical spin systems have been proposed in spin chain theory and, more recently, in magnon spintronics. However, current models of quantum-classical dynamics beyond mean-field approximations typically suffer from long-standing consistency issues, and, in some cases, invalidate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here, we present a fully Hamiltonian theory of quantum-classical spin dynamics that appears to be the first to ensure an entire series of consistency properties, including positivity of both the classical and the quantum density, so that Heisenberg's principle is satisf…
