We present a class of observables which are suitable for determining the fidelity of a state to the multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. Given an expectation value of an observable belonging to the class, we give a simple formula that gives a lower bound and an upper bound for the fidelity. Applying the formula to the GHZ-state preparation experiment by Pan {\it et al}. {[Nature (London) {\bf 403}, 515 (2000)]}, we show that the observed state lies outside of the class of biseparable mixed three-qubit states. We also show that for this class of operators, adopting the principle of minimum variance {[Phys. Rev. A {\bf 60}, 4338 (1999)]} in the state estimation always results in the state with the minimum fidelity.
We generalize the notion of unextendible maximally entangled basis from bipartite systems to multipartite quantum systems. It is proved that there do not exist unextendible maximally entangled bases in three-qubit systems. Moreover, two types of unextendible maximally entangled bases are constructed in tripartite quantum systems and proved to be not mutually unbiased.
We study maximally multipartite entangled states in the context of Gaussian continuous variable quantum systems. By considering multimode Gaussian states with constrained energy, we show that perfect maximally multipartite entangled states, which exhibit the maximum amount of bipartite entanglement for all bipartitions, only exist for systems containing n=2 or 3 modes. We further numerically investigate the structure of these states and their frustration for n<=7.
We study the conditions for obtaining maximally multipartite entangled states (MMES) as non-degenerate eigenstates of Hamiltonians that involve only short-range interactions. We investigate small-size systems (with a number of qubits ranging from 3 to 5) and show some example Hamiltonians with MMES as eigenstates.
We present a full definition of mixed maximally entangled (MME) states for multipartite systems, generalizing their existing definition for bipartite systems by using multipartite Schmidt decomposition. MME states are a special kind of maximally entangled mixed state (MEMS) for which every pure decomposition state in all decompositions is maximally entangled. Thus, MME states have entanglement 1 by all valid unit-normalized entanglement measures, whereas general MEMS can have entanglement less than 1. Multipartite MME states likely have important applications such as remote state preparation, …
A necessary condition of the maximally multipartite entangled states (MMES) is given via n-tangle. The condition shows that the n-tangle equal zero for the four-, and eight-qubit of MMESs and the n-tangle equal 1 for two- and six- qubits of MMESs. Furthermore,we give the theoretical limitation for maximally ten-qubit and twelve-qubit entangled states. We conjecture that 4n-qubit states of MMES should have n-tangle equal zero and 4n+2-qubit states of MMES should have n-tangle equal one.
In this work we provide a method for generating quantum circuits preparing maximally multipartite entangled states using genetic programming. The presented method is faster that known realisations thanks to the applied fitness function and several modifications to the genetic programming schema. Moreover, we enrich the described method by the unique possibility to define an arbitrary structure of a system. We use the developed method to find new quantum circuits, which are simpler from known results. We also analyse the efficiency of generating entanglement in the spin chain system and in the …
The maximally entangled state can be in a mixed state as well as the well-known pure state. Taking the negativity as a measure of entanglement, we study the entanglement dynamics of bipartite, mixed maximally entangled states (MMESs) in multipartite cavity-reservoir systems. It is found that the MMES can exhibit the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death, which is quite different from the asymptotic decay of the pure-Bell-state case. We also find that maximal entanglement cannot guarantee maximal nonlocality and the MMES does not correspond to the state with maximal measurement-induced nonloc…
Entanglement theory is formulated as a quantum resource theory in which the free operations are local operations and classical communication (LOCC). This defines a partial order among bipartite pure states that makes it possible to identify a maximally entangled state, which turns out to be the most relevant state in applications. However, the situation changes drastically in the multipartite regime. Not only do there exist inequivalent forms of entanglement forbidding the existence of a unique maximally entangled state, but recent results have shown that LOCC induces a trivial ordering: almos…
We show that for an m-partite quantum system, there is a ball of radius 2^{-(m/2-1)} in Frobenius norm, centered at the identity matrix, of separable (unentangled) positive semidefinite matrices. This can be used to derive an epsilon below which mixtures of epsilon of any density matrix with 1 - epsilon of the maximally mixed state will be separable. The epsilon thus obtained is exponentially better (in the number of systems) than existing results. This gives a number of qubits below which NMR with standard pseudopure-state preparation techniques can access only unentangled states; with parame…
We consider the class of (N+1)-partite states suitable for protocols where there is a powerful party, the authority, and the other N parties play the same role, namely the state of their system live in the symmetric Hilbert space. We show that, within this scenario, there is a "maximally entangled state" that can be transform by a LOCC protocol into any other state. In addition, we show how to make the protocol efficiently including the construction of the state and discuss security issues for possible applications to cryptographic protocols. As an immediate consequence we recover a sequential…
Heterogeneous bipartite quantum pure states, composed of two subsystems with a different number of levels, cannot have both reductions maximally mixed. In this work, we demonstrate existence of a wide range of highly entangled states of heterogeneous multipartite systems consisting of $N>2$ parties such that every reduction to one and two parties is maximally mixed. Two constructions of generating genuinely multipartite maximally entangled states of heterogeneous systems for an arbitrary number of subsystems are presented. Such states are related to quantum error correction codes over mixed al…
We present a method to construct entanglement measures for pure states of multipartite qubit systems. The key element of our approach is an antilinear operator that we call {\em comb} in reference to the {\em hairy-ball theorem}. For qubits (or spin 1/2) the combs are automatically invariant under $SL(2,\CC)$. This implies that the {\em filters} obtained from the combs are entanglement monotones by construction. We give alternative formulae for the concurrence and the 3-tangle as expectation values of certain antilinear operators. As an application we discuss inequivalent types of genuine four…
We introduce the notion of maximally multipartite entangled states of n qubits as a generalization of the bipartite case. These pure states have a bipartite entanglement that does not depend on the bipartition and is maximal for all possible bipartitions. They are solutions of a minimization problem. Examples for small n are investigated, both analytically and numerically.
We investigate quantum states that posses both maximum entanglement and maximum discord between the pertinent parties. Since entanglement (discord) is defined only for bipartite (two qubit) systems, we shall introduce an appropriate sum over of all bi-partitions as the associated measure. The ensuing definition --not new for entanglement-- is thus extended here to quantum discord. Also, additional dimensions within the parties are considered ({\it qudits}). We also discuss nonlocality (in the form of maximum violation of a Bell inequality) for all multiqubit systems. The emergence of more nonl…
Entanglement is a resource in quantum information theory when state manipulation is restricted to Local Operations assisted by Classical Communication (LOCC). It is therefore of paramount importance to decide which LOCC transformations are possible and, particularly, which states are maximally useful under this restriction. While the bipartite maximally entangled state is well known (it is the only state that cannot be obtained from any other and, at the same time, it can be transformed to any other by LOCC), no such state exists in the multipartite case. In order to cope with this fact, we in…

We study if all maximally entangled states are pure through several entanglement monotones. In the bipartite case, we find that the same conditions which lead to the uniqueness of the entropy of entanglement as a measure of entanglement, exclude the existence of maximally mixed entangled states. In the multipartite scenario, our conclusions allow us to generalize the idea of monogamy of entanglement: we establish the \textit{polygamy of entanglement}, expressing that if a general state is maximally entangled with respect to some kind of multipartite entanglement, then it is necessarily factori…
For every possible spectrum of $2^N$-dimensional density operators, we construct an $N$-qubit X-state of same spectrum and maximal genuine multipartite (GM-) concurrence, hence characterizing a global unitary transformation that --- constrained to output X-states --- maximizes the GM-concurrence of an arbitrary input mixed state of $N$ qubits. We also apply semidefinite programming methods to obtain $N$-qubit X-states with maximal GM-concurrence for a given purity and to provide an alternative proof of optimality of a recently proposed set of density matrices for the role, the so-called X-MEMS…
A simple entanglement measure for multipartite pure states is formulated based on the partial entropy of a series of reduced density matrices. Use of the proposed new measure to distinguish disentangled, partially entangled, and maximally entangled multipartite pure states is illustrated.
A multipartite entanglement measure called the ent is presented and shown to be an entanglement monotone, with the special property of automatic normalization. Necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for constructing maximally entangled states in every multipartite system such that they are true-generalized X states (TGX) states, a generalization of the Bell states, and are extended to general nonTGX states as well. These results are then used to prove the existence of maximally entangled basis (MEB) sets in all systems. A parameterization of general pure states of all ent values is …
Locally maximally entangleable states (LMESs) constitute a large set of multipartite states, containing for instance all stabilizer states. LMESs are uniquely characterized by (2n-1) phases, where n denotes the number of qubits. We consider here those LMES whose phases are either 0 or π and present a multipartite entanglement purification protocol for arbitrary such states. In contrast to all previously known recurrence protocols this protocol uses a novel ingredient, which is required due to the quantum correlations contained in the various LMESs. We compare this scheme to previously known en…
Paolo Facchi et al.[Phys. Rev. A. 77, 060304(R) (2009)] presented a maximally multipartite entangled state(MMES). Here we give the criterion for four-qubit state.and some new characterizations of the maximally entangled four-qubit state are given.

Pure multipartite quantum states of n parties and local dimension q are called k-uniform if all reductions to k parties are maximally mixed. These states are relevant for our understanding of multipartite entanglement, quantum information protocols, and the construction of quantum error correction codes. To our knowledge, the only known systematic construction of these quantum states is based on classical error correction codes. We present a systematic method to construct other examples of k-uniform states and show that the states derived through our construction are not equivalent to any k-un…
We present a three-cavity network model with two modes in each cavity and a non-linear medium that generates a Kerr type interaction via both self-phase and cross-phase modulation processes. We have two main goals. The first one is to generate a multipartite Maximally Entangled State (MES), starting from the ground state of the system. We address the problem both without and with dissipation. Secondly, we want to protect the MES from decoherence. While studying the MES, we analyze different bipartite and multipartite entanglement measures. We also study the effect of an Avoided Level Crossing …
We investigate multipartite entanglement for composite quantum systems in a pure state. Using the generalized Bloch representation for n-qubit states, we express the condition that all k-qubit reductions of the whole system are maximally mixed, reflecting maximum bipartite entanglement across all k vs. n-k bipartitions. As a special case, we examine the class of balanced pure states, which are constructed from a subset of the Pauli group P_n that is isomorphic to Z_2^n. This makes a connection with the theory of quantum error-correcting codes and provides bounds on the largest allowed k for fi…
We propose a multipartite extension of Matsumoto and Hayashi's distortion-free entanglement concentration protocol, which takes $n$ copies of a general multipartite state and, via local measurements, produces a maximally-entangled multipartite state between local spaces of dimensions $\sim 2^{n E_i}$, where $E_i$ are the local entropies of the input state. However, the extended protocol is generally not universal in the sense that for the same measurement outcomes, the output state will still depend on the input state. Our main result is that when specialized to any state in the multiqubit W c…
We investigate the possibility to obtain higly multipartite-entangled states as nondegenerate eigenstates of Hamiltonians that involve only short-range and few-body interactions. We study small-size systems (with a number of qubits ranging from three to five) and search for Hamiltonians with a Maximally Multipartite Entangled State (MMES) as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We then find conditions, including bounds on the number of coupled qubits, to build a Hamiltonian with a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We finally comment on possible applications.
Fully entangled fraction is a definition for bipartite states, which is tightly related to bipartite maximally entangled states, and has clear experimental and theoretical significance. In this work, we generalize it to multipartite case, we call the generalized version multipartite fully entangled fraction (MFEF). MFEF measures the closeness of a state to GHZ states. The analytical expressions of MFEF are very difficult to obtain except for very special states, however, we show that, the MFEF of any state is determined by a system of finite-order polynomial equations. Therefore, the MFEF can …
Generating entanglement between more parties is one of the central tasks and challenges in the backdrop of building quantum technologies. Here we propose a measurement-based protocol for producing multipartite entangled states which can be later fed into some network for realizing suitable quantum protocols. We consider weak entangling measurement on two parties as the basic unit of operation to create entanglement between more parties starting from an entangled state with a lesser number of parties and auxiliary systems in the form of a single-qubit or entangled state itself. We call the intr…
In this work we propose the geometric mean of bipartite concurrences as a genuine multipartite entanglement measure. This measure achieves the maximum value for absolutely maximally entangled states and has desirable properties for quantifying potential quantum resources. The simplicity and symmetry in the definition facilitates its computation for various multipartite entangled states including the GHZ states and the $W$ states. With explicit examples we show that our measure results in distinct entanglement orderings from other measures, and can detect differences in certain types of genuine…
We introduce the notion of a task-oriented maximally entangled state (TMES). This notion depends on the tasks for which a quantum state is used as the resource. This concept may be more fruitful than that of a general maximally entangled state in the case of a multipartite system. We illustrate this idea by giving an operational definition of maximally entangled states on the basis of communication tasks of teleportation and superdense coding. We also give examples and a procedure to obtain such TMESs for {\em n}-qubit systems.
A pure quantum state of N subsystems with d levels each is called k-multipartite maximally entangled state, written k-uniform, if all its reductions to k qudits are maximally mixed. These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. We establish a link between the combinatorial notion of orthogonal arrays and k-uniform states and prove the existence of several new classes of such states for N-qudit systems. In particular, known Hadamard matrices allow us to explicitly construct 2-uniform states for an arbitrary number of N>5 qubits. We…
We investigate the systematic use of the Schwinger representation, by virtue of which two boson fields are equivalent to an effective spin, for casting multimode squeezed states into multipartite spin entangled states. The motivation for this endeavor is the following established fact: finitely squeezed, two-mode entangled states can be recast into maximally entangled bipartite spin states, irrespective of their level of squeezing (in the lossless case). This work explores the generalization of this interesting property to multipartite entanglement. While we found that the generalization of mu…
We classify multipartite entangled states in the 2 x 2 x n (n >= 4) quantum system, for example the 4-qubit system distributed over 3 parties, under local filtering operations. We show that there exist nine essentially different classes of states, and they give rise to a five-graded partially ordered structure, including the celebrated Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W classes of 3 qubits. In particular, all 2 x 2 x n-states can be deterministically prepared from one maximally entangled state, and some applications like entanglement swapping are discussed.
We show that not all 4-party pure states are GHZ reducible (i.e., can be generated reversibly from a combination of 2-, 3- and 4-party maximally entangled states by local quantum operations and classical communication asymptotically) through an example, we also present some properties of the relative entropy of entanglement for those 3-party pure states that are GHZ reducible, and then we relate these properties to the additivity of the relative entropy of entanglement.
The nonlocal correlations of multipartite entangled states can be reproduced by a classical model if sufficiently many parties join together or if sufficiently many parties broadcast their measurement inputs. The maximal number m of groups and the minimal number k of broadcasting parties that allow for the reproduction of a given set of correlations quantify their multipartite nonlocal content. We show how upper-bounds on m and lower-bounds on k can be computed from the violation of the Mermin-Svetlichny inequalities. While n-partite GHZ states violate these inequalities maximally, we find tha…
We give conditions under which general bipartite entangled nonorthogonal states become maximally entangled states. By the conditions we construct a large class of entangled nonorthogonal states with exact one ebit of entanglement in both bipartite and multipartite systems. One remarkable property is that the amount of entanglement in this class of states is independent on the parameters involved in the states. Finally we discuss how to generate the bipartite maximally entangled nonorthogonal states.
We propose a multi party quantum clock synchronization protocol that makes optimal use of the maximal multipartite entanglement of GHZ-type states. To realize the protocol, different versions of maximally entangled eigenstates of collective energy are generated by local transformations that distinguish between different groupings of the parties. The maximal sensitivity of the entangled states to time differences between the local clocks can then be accessed if all parties share the results of their local time dependent measurements. The efficiency of the protocol is evaluated in terms of the s…
Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are those multipartite quantum states that carry absolute maximum entanglement in all possible partitions. AME states are known to play a relevant role in multipartite teleportation, in quantum secret sharing and they provide the basis novel tensor networks related to holography. We present alternative constructions of AME states and show their link with combinatorial designs. We also analyze a key property of AME, namely their relation to tensors that can be understood as unitary transformations in every of its bi-partitions. We call this property m…
We find an interesting relationship between multipartite bound entangled states and the stabilizer formalism. We prove that if a set of commuting operators from the generalized Pauli group on $n$ qudits satisfy certain constraints, then the maximally mixed state over the subspace stabilized by them is an unlockable bound entangled state. Moreover, the properties of this state, such as symmetry under permutations of parties, undistillability and unlockability, can be easily explained from the stabilizer formalism without tedious calculation. In particular, the four-qubit Smolin state and its re…
We design a series of quantum circuits that generate absolute maximally entangled (AME) states to benchmark a quantum computer. A relation between graph states and AME states can be exploited to optimize the structure of the circuits and minimize their depth. Furthermore, we find that most of the provided circuits obey majorization relations for every partition of the system, and at every step of the quantum computation. The rational for our approach is to benchmark quantum computers with maximal useful entanglement, which can be used to implement multipartite quantum protocols.
Recently, Doroudiani and Karimipour [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{102} 012427(2020)] proposed the notation of planar maximally entangled (PME) states which are a wider class of multipartite entangled states than absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states. There they presented their constructions in the multipartite systems but the number of particles is restricted to be even. Here we first solve the remaining cases, i.e., constructions of planar maximally entangled states on systems with odd number of particles. In addition, we generalized the PME to the planar $k$-uniform states whose reductions to …
Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are maximally entangled for every bipartition of the system. They are crucial resources for various quantum information protocols. We present techniques for verifying either two AME states are equivalent concerning Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication (SLOCC). The conjecture that for a given multipartite quantum system all AME states are SLOCC-equivalent is falsified. We also show that the existence of AME states with minimal support of 6 or more particles results in the existence of infinitely many such non-SLOCC-equivalent states…
We explore the question of using an entangled state as a universal resource for implementing quantum measurements by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We show that for most systems consisting of three or more subsystems, there is no entangled state from the same space that can enable all measurements by LOCC. This is in direct contrast to the bipartite case, where a maximally entangled state is an universal resource. Our results are obtained showing an equivalence between the problem of local state transformation and that of entanglement-assisted local unambiguous state disc…
Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states are multipartite entangled states that are maximally entangled for any possible bipartition. In this paper, we study the description of AME states within the graph state formalism. The graphical representation provides an intuitive framework to visualize the entanglement in graph states, which makes them a natural candidate to describe AME states. We show two different methods of determining bipartite entanglement in graph states and use them to define various AME graph states. We further show that AME graph states exist for all number of parties, an…
We present two economical one-step error-correction protocols for multipartite polarization-entangled systems in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. One uses spatial entanglement to correct errors in the polarization entanglement of an N-photon system, resorting to linear optical elements. The other uses frequency entanglement to correct errors in the polarization entanglement of an N-photon system. The parties in quantum communication can obtain a maximally entangled state from each N-photon system transmitted with one step in these two protocols, and both of their success probabilities are …
We investigate the generalized braid relation ($d-$level $N-$body braid relation) and its application to quantum entanglement. By means of finite-dimensional representations of Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, a set of $d^{N}\times d^{N}$ unitary matrix representations satisfying the generalized braid relation can be constructed. Such generalized braid matrices can entangle $d-$level $N-$partite quantum states. Acting the generalized braid matrices on the standard basis, one can obtain a set of maximally entangled basis. Further study shows that such entangled basis can be viewed as the $d-$level $N-$…
We investigate absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states, which are multipartite quantum states that are maximally entangled with respect to any possible bipartition. These strong entanglement properties make them a powerful resource for a variety of quantum information protocols. In this paper, we show the existence of AME states for any number of parties, given that the dimension of the involved systems is chosen appropriately. We prove the equivalence of AME states shared between an even number of parties and pure state threshold quantum secret sharing (QSS) schemes, and prove necessary a…
We present two entanglement concentration protocols (ECPs) for arbitrary three-electron W state based on their charges and spins. Different from other ECPs, in both two ECPs, with the help of the electronic polarization beam splitter (PBS) and charge detection, the less-entangled W state can be concentrated into a maximally entangled state only with some single charge qubits. The second ECP is more optimal than the first one, for by constructing the complete parity check gate, the second ECP can be used repeatedly to further concentrate the less-entangled state and obtain a higher success prob…
Bipartite maximally entangled states have the property that the largest Schmidt coefficient reaches its lower bound. However, for multipartite states the standard Schmidt decomposition generally does not exist. We use a generalized Schmidt decomposition and the geometric measure of entanglement to characterize three-qubit pure states and derive a single-parameter family of maximally entangled three-qubit states. The paradigmatic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states emerge as extreme members in this family of maximally entangled states. This family of states possess different trends o…
