A recent proposal for mixed dynamics of classical and quantum ensembles is shown, in contrast to other proposals, to satisfy the minimal algebraic requirements proposed by Salcedo for any consistent formulation of such dynamics. Generalised Ehrenfest relations for the expectation values of classical and quantum observables are also obtained. It is further shown that additional desirable requirements, related to separability, may be satisfied under the assumption that only the configuration of the classical component is directly accessible to measurement, eg, via a classical pointer. Although the mixed dynamics is formulated in terms of ensembles on configuration space, thermodynamic mixtures of such ensembles may be defined which are equivalent to canonical phase space ensembles on the classical sector. Hence, the formulation appears to be both consistent and physically complete.
The purpose of this paper is to present a network realization theory for a class of mixed quantum-classical linear stochastic systems. Two forms, the standard form and the general form, of this class of linear mixed quantum-classical systems are proposed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for their physical realizability are derived. Based on these physical realizability conditions, a network synthesis theory for this class of linear mixed quantum-classical systems is developed, which clearly exhibits the quantum component, the classical component, and their interface. An example is used to …
We consider visible compression for discrete memoryless sources of mixed quantum states when only classical information can be sent from Alice to Bob. We assume that Bob knows the source statistics, and that Alice and Bob have identical random number generators. We put in an information theoretic framework some recent results on visible compression for sources of states with commuting density operators, and remove the commutativity requirement. We derive a general achievable compression rate, which is for the noncommutative case still higher than the known lower bound. We also present several …
We report on an experiment to detect non-classical correlations in a highly mixed state. The correlations are characterized by the quantum discord and are observed using four qubits in a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. The state analyzed is the output of a DQC1 computation, whose input is a single quantum bit accompanied by n maximally mixed qubits. This model of computation outperforms the best known classical algorithms, and although it contains vanishing entanglement it is known to have quantum correlations characterized by the quantum discord. This ex…
We have investigated the dynamics of quantum discord and entanglement for two qubits subject to independent global transverse and/or longitudinal memoryless noisy classical fields. Global transverse and/or longitudinal random fields are found to drive the system to maximally discordant mixed separable steady states for suitable initial conditions. Moreover, two independent noises in the system are found to enhance both the steady state randomness and quantum discord in the absence of entanglement for some initial states.
We introduce a simple measure of "classicality" of pure and mixed quantum states as a maximum value of the Hilbert-Schmidt "scalar products" between the renormalized statistical operators of the state concerned and all displaced thermal states. Choosing Fock states as the reference set, we introduce the measure of "anticlassicality". Both measures are illustrated for the Fock, coherent phase, and generic mixed Gaussian states. Gaussian states are shown to be the closest to thermal states possessing the same degree of quantum purity. On the contrary, Fock states appear to be more close to mixed…
We describe quantum and classical Hamiltonian dynamics in a common Hilbert space framework, that allows the treatment of mixed quantum-classical systems. The analysis of some examples illustrates the possibility of entanglement between classical and quantum systems. We give a summary of the main tools of Berezin-Toeplitz and geometric quantization, that provide a relation between the classical and the quantum models, based essentially on the selection of a subspace of the classical Hilbert space. Coherent states provide a systematic tool for the inverse process, called dequantization, that ass…
We discuss how to calculate genuine multipartite quantum and classical correlations in symmetric, spatially invariant, mixed $n$-qubit density matrices. We show that the existence of symmetries greatly reduces the amount of free parameters to be optimized in order to find the optimal measurement that minimizes the conditional entropy in the discord calculation. We apply this approach to the states exhibited dynamically during a thermodynamic protocol to extract maximum work. We also apply the symmetry criterion to a wide class of physically relevant cases of spatially homogeneous noise over mu…

A density matrix $ρ$ may be represented in many different ways as a mixture of pure states, $ρ= \sum_i p_i |ψ_i\ra \la ψ_i|$. This paper characterizes the class of probability distributions $(p_i)$ that may appear in such a decomposition, for a fixed density matrix $ρ$. Several illustrative applications of this result to quantum mechanics and quantum information theory are given.
We study the relative strength of classical and quantum correlations, as measured by discord, for two-qubit states. Quantum correlations appear only in the presence of classical correlations, while the reverse is not always true. We identify the family of states that maximize the discord for a given value of the classical correlations and show that the largest attainable discord for mixed states is greater than for pure states. The difference between discord and entanglement is emphasized by the remarkable fact that these states do not maximize entanglement and are, in some cases, even separab…
A game-theoretic setting provides a mathematical basis for analysis of strategic interaction among competing agents and provides insights into both classical and quantum decision theory and questions of strategic choice. An outstanding mathematical question, is to understand the conditions under which a classical game-theoretic setting can be transformed to a quantum game, and under which conditions there is an equivalence. In this paper, we consider quantum games as those that allow non-factorizable probabilities. We discuss two approaches for obtaining a non-factorizable game and study the o…
We investigate signatures of non-classicality in quantum states, in particular, those involved in the DQC1 model of mixed-state quantum computation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5672 (1998)]. To do so, we consider two known non-classicality criteria. The first quantifies disturbance of a quantum state under locally noneffective unitary operations (LNU), which are local unitaries acting invariantly on a subsystem. The second quantifies measurement induced disturbance (MID) in the eigenbasis of the reduced density matrices. We study the role of both figures of non-classicality in the exponential speedup…
Quantum information processing exploits non-local functionality that has led to significant breakthroughs in the successful deployment of quantum mechanical protocols. In this regard, we address the dynamics of entanglement and coherence for three non-interacting qubits initially prepared as maximally entangled GHZ-like state coupled with independent classical environments. Two different Gaussian noises in pure and mixed noisy situations, namely, pure power-law noise, pure fractional Gaussian noise, power-law noise maximized and fractional Gaussian noise maximized cases are assumed to characte…
We investigate the correlation properties of separable two qubit states with maximally mixed marginals. These states are divided to two sets with the same geometric quantum correlation. However a closer scrutiny of these states reveals a profound difference between their quantum correlations as measured by more probing measures. Although these two sets of states are prepared by the same type of quantum operations acting on classically correlated states with equal classical correlations, the amount of final quantum correlation is different. We investigate this difference and trace it back to th…
In a quantum computation with pure states, the generation of large amounts of entanglement is known to be necessary for a speedup with respect to classical computations. However, examples of quantum computations with mixed states are known, such as the deterministic computation with one quantum qubit (DQC1) model [Knill and Laflamme, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5672 (1998)], in which entanglement is at most marginally present, and yet a computational speedup is believed to occur. Correlations, and not entanglement, have been identified as a necessary ingredient for mixed-state quantum computation spe…
We study how decoherence rules the quantum-classical transition of the Kicked Harmonic Oscillator (KHO). When the amplitude of the kick is changed the system presents a classical dynamics that range from regular to a strong chaotic behavior. We show that for regular and mixed classical dynamics, and in the presence of noise, the distance between the classical and the quantum phase space distributions is proportional to a single parameter $χ\equiv K\hbar_{\rm eff}^2/4D^{3/2}$ which relates the effective Planck constant $\hbar_{\rm eff}$, the kick amplitude $K$ and the diffusion constant $D$. Th…
We propose a highly efficient mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics scheme based on a solution of the quantum-classical Liouville equation (QCLE). By casting the equations of motion for the quantum subsystem and classical bath degrees of freedom onto an approximate set of coupled first-order differential equations for c-numbers, this scheme propagates the composite system in time deterministically in terms of independent classical-like trajectories. To demonstrate its performance, we apply the method to the spin-boson model, a photo-induced electron transfer model, and a Fenna-Matthews-Ol…
We show that a highly-mixed state in terms of a large min-entropy is useless as a resource state for measurement-based quantum computation in the sense that if a classically efficiently verifiable problem is efficiently solved with such a highly-mixed measurement-based quantum computation then such a problem can also be classically efficiently solved. We derive a similar result also for the DQC1$_k$ model, which is a generalized version of the DQC1 model where $k$ output qubits are measured. We also show that the measurement-based quantum computing on a highly-mixed resource state in terms of …
We analyze the effects of quantum correlations, such as entanglement and discord, on the efficiency of phase estimation by studying four quantum circuits that can be readily implemented using NMR techniques. These circuits define a standard strategy of repeated single-qubit measurements, a classical strategy where only classical correlations are allowed, and two quantum strategies where nonclassical correlations are allowed. In addition to counting space (number of qubits) and time (number of gates) requirements, we introduce mixedness as a key constraint of the experiment. We compare the effi…
We operationally introduce mixed quantum t-designs as the most general arbitrary-rank extension of projective quantum t-designs which preserves indistinguishability from the uniform distribution for t copies. First, we derive upper bounds on the classical communication capacity of any mixed t-design measurement for t in [1,5]. Second, we explicitly compute the classical communication capacity of several mixed t-design measurements, including the depolarized version of any qubit and qutrit symmetric, informationally complete (SIC) measurement and complete mutually unbiased bases, the qubit icos…
We establish a quantitative connection between the amount of lost classical information about a quantum state and the concomitant loss of entanglement. Using methods that have been developed for the optimal purification of mixed states we find a class of mixed states with known distillable entanglement. These results can be used to determine the quantum capacity of a quantum channel which randomizes the order of transmitted signals.
Wave-particle duality is an essential character of quantum systems. In the last few years, much progress has being made towards formally quantifying these quantum features. The properties of the quantum density matrix were shown to lead to duality inequalities for single-quanton mixed states and to triality identities, also known as complete complementarity relations (CCRs), for two-quanton pure states. In this article, we establish connections between CCRs and EPR (ir)realism, as formalized by Bilobran and Angelo in [Europhys. Lett. 112, 40005 (2015)]. Besides, we show that, for tripartite pu…
We consider the problem of optimal asymptotically faithful compression for ensembles of mixed quantum states. Although the optimal rate is unknown, we prove upper and lower bounds and describe a series of illustrative examples of compression of mixed states. We also discuss a classical analogue of the problem.
This paper presents the momentum map structures which emerge in the dynamics of mixed states. Both quantum and classical mechanics are shown to possess analogous momentum map pairs. In the quantum setting, the right leg of the pair identifies the Berry curvature, while its left leg is shown to lead to more general realizations of the density operator which have recently appeared in quantum molecular dynamics. Finally, the paper shows how alternative representations of both the density matrix and the classical density are equivariant momentum maps generating new Clebsch representations for both…
The quantum and classical dynamics of particles kicked by a gaussian attractive potential are studied. Classically, it is an open mixed system (the motion in some parts of the phase space is chaotic, and in some parts it is regular). The fidelity (Lochshmidt echo) is found to exhibit oscillations that can be determined from classical considerations but are sensitive to phase space structures that are smaller than Planck's constant. Families of quasi-energies are determined from classical phase space structures. Substantial differences between the classical and quantum dynamics are found for ti…
This work identifies geometric effects on dynamics due to nonadiabatic couplings in Born Oppenheimer systems and provides a systematic method for deriving corrections to mixed quantum-classical methods. Specifically, an exact path integral formulation of the quantum nonadiabatic dynamics of Born Oppenheimer systems is described. Stationary phase approximations to the propagator for full quantum dynamics are derived. It is shown that quantum corrections to mixed quantum classical methods can be obtained through stationary phase approximations to the full quantum dynamics. A rigorous description…
When a regular classical system is perturbed, non-linear resonances appear as prescribed by the KAM and Poincarè-Birkhoff theorems. Manifestations of this classical phenomena to the morphologies of quantum wave functions are studied in this letter. We reveal a systematic formation of an universal structure of localized wave functions in systems with mixed classical dynamics. Unperturbed states that live around invariant tori are mixed when they collide in an avoided crossing if their quantum numbers differ in a multiple to the order of the classical resonance. At the avoided crossing eigenstat…
We give a survey of some of the recent progress made in deploying quantum and classical communications over a shared fiber, focusing in particular on results obtained using continuous-variable QKD.
Mixed Quantum Classical (MQC)-IVR is a recently introduced semiclassical framework that allows for selective quantization of the modes of a complex system. In the quantum limit, MQC reproduces the semiclassical Double Herman-Kluk IVR results, accurately capturing nuclear quantum coherences and conserving zero-point energy. However, in the classical limit, while MQC mimics the Husimi-IVR for real-time correlation functions with linear operators, it is significantly less accurate for non-linear correlation functions with errors even at time zero. Here, we identify the origin of this discrepancy …
Through the generalization of Khinchin's classical axiomatic foundation, a basis is developed for nonadditive information theory. The classical nonadditive conditional entropy indexed by the positive parameter q is introduced and then translated into quantum information. This quantity is nonnegative for classically correlated states but can take negative values for entangled mixed states. This property is used to study quantum entanglement in the parametrized Werner-Popescu-like state of an N^n-system, that is, an n-partite N-level system. It is shown how the strongest limitation on validity o…
Solving combinatorial optimization problems on current noisy quantum devices is currently being advocated for (and restricted to) binary polynomial optimization with equality constraints via quantum heuristic approaches. This is achieved using, e.g., the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). We present a decomposition-based approach to extend the applicability of current approaches to "quadratic plus convex" mixed binary optimization (MBO) problems, so as to solve a broad class of real-world optimization problems. In the MBO framework,…
An extended variational principle providing the equations of motion for a system consisting of interacting classical, quasiclassical and quantum components is presented, and applied to the model of bilinear coupling. The relevant dynamical variables are expressed in the form of a quantum state vector which includes the action of the classical subsystem in its phase factor. It is shown that the statistical ensemble of Brownian state vectors for a quantum particle in a classical thermal environment can be described by a density matrix evolving according to a nonlinear quantum Fokker-Planck equat…
Mixed quantum-classical spin systems have been proposed in spin chain theory and, more recently, in magnon spintronics. However, current models of quantum-classical dynamics beyond mean-field approximations typically suffer from long-standing consistency issues, and, in some cases, invalidate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here, we present a fully Hamiltonian theory of quantum-classical spin dynamics that appears to be the first to ensure an entire series of consistency properties, including positivity of both the classical and the quantum density, so that Heisenberg's principle is satisf…
The modelling of quantum heat transfer processes at the nanoscale is crucial for the development of energy harvesting and molecular electronics devices. Herein, we adopt a mixed quantum-classical description of a device, in which the open subsystem of interest is treated quantum mechanically and the surrounding heat baths are treated in a classical-like fashion. By introducing such a mixed quantum-classical description of the composite system, one is able to study the heat transfer between the subsystem and bath from a closed system point of view, thereby avoiding simplifying assumptions relat…

A new method to search for best features is explored using the Quantum Support Vector Machine's feature map characteristics. …
We investigate both the classical and quantum dynamics for a simple kicked system (the standard map) that classically has mixed phase space. For initial conditions in a portion of the chaotic region that is close enough to the regular region, the phenomenon of sticking leads to a power-law decay with time of the classical correlation function of a simple observable. Quantum mechanically, we find the same behavior, but with a smaller exponent. We consider various possible explanations of this phenomenon, and settle on a modification of the Meiss--Ott Markov tree model that takes into account qu…
The dynamics of an electronic two-level system coupled to an electromagnetic field are simulated explicitly for one and three dimensional systems through semiclassical propagation of the Maxwell-Liouville equations. We consider three flavors of mixed quantum-classical dynamics: the classical path approximation (CPA), Ehrenfest dynamics, and symmetrical quantum-classical (SQC) dynamics. The CPA fails to recover a consistent description of spontaneous emission. A consistent "spontaneous" emission can be obtained from Ehrenfest dynamics--provided that one starts in an electronic superposition sta…
In game theory, an Evolutionarily Stable Set (ES set) is a set of Nash Equilibrium (NE) strategies that give the same payoffs. Similar to an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ES strategy), an ES set is also a strict NE. This work investigates the evolutionary stability of classical and quantum strategies in the quantum penny flip games. In particular, we developed an evolutionary game theory model to conduct a series of simulations where a population of mixed classical strategies from the ES set of the game were invaded by quantum strategies. We found that when only one of the two players' mixed…
