We report temperature and magnetic field dependence of the thermal transport properties in single crystals of (Sr/Ca)MnBi$_2$ with linear energy dispersion. In SrMnBi$_2$ thermopower is positive, indicating hole-type carriers and the magnetic field enhances the thermopower significantly. The maximum change of thermopower is about 1600% in 9 T field and at 10 K. A negative thermopower is observed in CaMnBi$_2$ with dominant electron-type carriers and, in contrast, the magnetic field suppresses the absolute value of thermopower. First-principle band structure shows that the chemical potential is close to the Dirac-cone-like points in linear bands. The magnetic field suppresses the apparent Hall carrier density of CaMnBi$_2$ below 50 K. The large magnetothermopower effect in (Sr/Ca)MnBi$_2$ is attributed to the magnetic field shift of chemical potential
We report the large linear magnetoresistance ($\sim 300\%$ in 9 T field at 2 K) and magnetothermopower in layered SrZnSb$_2$ crystal with quasi-two-dimensional Sb layers. A crossover from the semiclassical parabolic field dependent magnetoresistance to linear field dependent magnetoresistance with increasing magnetic field is observed. The magnetoresistance behavior can be described very well by combining the semiclassical cyclotron contribution and the quantum limit magnetoresistance. Magnetic field also enhances the thermopower. Our results can be well understood by the magnetotransport of D…
The magnetothermopower and the magnetoresistance of single Co Ni/Cu multilayered nan-owires with various thicknesses of the Cu spacer are investigated. Both kinds of measurement have been performed as a function of temperature (50 K to 325 K) and under applied magnetic fields perpendicular to the nanowire axis, with magnitudes up to 15 % at room temperature. A linear relation between thermopower S and electrical conductivity σ of the nanowires is found, with the magnetic field as an implicit variable. Combining the linear behavior of the S vs. σ and the Mott formula, the energy derivative of t…

Here we report the possible signature of Dirac fermions in the magnetoresistance, Hall resistivity and magnetothermopower of LaAgSb$_2$. The opposite sign between Hall resistivity and Seebeck coefficient indicates the multiband effect. Electronic structure calculation reveals the existence of the linear bands and the parabolic bands crossing the Fermi level. The large linear magnetoresistance was attributed to the quantum limit of the possible Dirac fermions or the breakdown of weak-field magnetotransport at the charge density wave phase transition. Analysis of Hall resistivity using two-band …
Here, we report by first-principles calculations one new stable 2D Dirac material, Ta2Se3 monolayer. For this system, stable layered bulk phase exists, and exfoliation should be possible. Ta2Se3 monolayer is demonstrated to support two Dirac points close to the Fermi level, achieving the exotic 2D double Dirac semimetal. And like 2D single Dirac and 2D node-line semimetals, spin-orbit coupling could introduce an insulating state in this new class of 2D Dirac semimetals. Moreover, the Dirac feature in this system is layer-dependent and a metal-to-insulator transition is identified in Ta2Se3 whe…
We combined the group theory and data mining approach within the Organic Materials Database that leads to the prediction of stable Dirac-point nodes within the electronic band structure of 3-dimensional organic crystals. We find a particular space group $P2_12_12_1$ ($\#19$) that is conducive to the Dirac nodes formation. We prove that nodes are a consequence of the orthorhombic crystal structure. Within the electronic band structure, two different kinds of nodes can be distinguished: 8-fold degenerate Dirac nodes protected by the crystalline symmetry and 4-fold degenerate Dirac nodes protecte…
Design principles and novel predictions of new 3D Dirac semimetals are presented, along with the context of currently known materials. Current materials include those based on a topological to trivial phase transition, such as in TlBiSe$_{2-x}$S$_x$ and Hg$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$Te, Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$, Bi$_{2-x}$In$_x$Se$_3$, and Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se. Some more recently revealed materials, Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, are 3D Dirac semimetals in their native composition. The different design principles presented each yield novel predictions for new candidates. For Case I, 3D Dirac semimetals based on charge ba…
Searching for two-dimensional (2D) organic Dirac materials, which have more adaptable practical applications in comparing with inorganic ones, is of great significance and has been ongoing. However, only two kinds of these materials with low Fermi velocity have been discovered so far. Herein, we report the design of an organic monolayer with C$_4$N$_3$H stoichiometry which possesses fascinating structure and good stability in its free-standing state. More importantly, we demonstrate that this monolayer is a semimetal with anisotropic Dirac cones and very high Fermi velocity. This Fermi velocit…
We report a new, cleavable, strong-topological-metal, Zr2Te2P, which has the same tetradymite-type crystal structure as the topological insulator Bi2Te2Se. Instead of being a semiconductor, however, Zr2Te2P is metallic with a pseudogap between 0.2 and 0.7 eV above the fermi energy (EF). Inside this pseudogap, two Dirac dispersions are predicted: one is a surface-originated Dirac cone protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS), while the other is a bulk-originated and slightly gapped Dirac cone with a largely linear dispersion over a 2 eV energy range. A third surface TRS-protected Dirac cone is…
Materials harboring exotic quasiparticles, such as Dirac and Weyl fermions\cite{xu2015discovery,borisenko2015time,weng2015weyl,xu2015observation}, have garnered much attention from the physics and material science communities. These fermions are massless and, in some materials, have shown exceptional physical properties such as ultrahigh mobility and extremely large magnetoresistances \cite{liang2015ultrahigh,ali2014large,du2015unsaturated,shekhar2015large}. Recently, new materials have been predicted to exist which exhibit line nodes of Dirac cones \cite{PhysRevLett.115.036806,xie2015new,burk…
Realization of conically linear dispersion, termed as Dirac cones, has recently opened up exciting opportunities for high-performance devices that make use of the peculiar transport properties of the massless carriers. A good example of current fashion is the heavily studied graphene, a single atomic layered graphite. It not only offers a prototype of Dirac physics in the field of condensed matter and materials science, but also provides a playground of various exotic phenomena. In the meantime, numerous routes have been attempted to search for the next "graphene". Despite these efforts, to da…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials with Dirac cones have been intrigued by many unique properties, i.e., the effective masses of carriers close to zero and Fermi velocity of ultrahigh, which yields a great possibility in high-performance electronic devices. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we have predicted a new Dirac cone material of silicon carbide with the new stoichiometries, named g-SiC6 monolayer, which is composed of sp2 hybridized with a graphene-like structure. The detailed calculations have revealed that g-SiC6 has outstanding dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabili…
Based on their formation mechanisms, Dirac points in three-dimensional systems can be classified as accidental or essential. The former can be further distinguished into type-I and type-II, depending on whether the Dirac cone spectrum is completely tipped over along certain direction. Here, we predict the coexistence of all three kinds of Dirac points in the low-energy band structure of CaAgBi-family materials with a stuffed Wurtzite structure. Two pairs of accidental Dirac points reside on the rotational axis, with one pair being type-I and the other pair type-II; while another essential Dira…
Tuning and stabilising topological states, such as Weyl semimetals, Dirac semimetals, or topological insulators, is emerging as one of the major topics in materials science. Periodic driving of many-body systems offers a platform to design Floquet states of matter with tunable electronic properties on ultrafast time scales. Here we show by first principles calculations how femtosecond laser pulses with circularly polarised light can be used to switch between Weyl semimetal, Dirac semimetal, and topological insulator states in a prototypical 3D Dirac material, Na$_3$Bi. Our findings are general…
We propose a new concept of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semiconductor which is characterized by the emergence of fourfold degenerate band crossings near the band edge and provide a generic approach to realize this novel semiconductor in the community of material science. Based on the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we discover recently synthesised triple-layer (TL)-BiOS2 is such Dirac semiconductor that features Dirac cone at X/Y point, protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry. Due to sandwich-like structure, each Dirac fermion in TL-BiOS2 can be regarded as a combination of two …
We propose a novel class of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials in the MX family (M=Be, Mg, Zn and Cd, X = Cl, Br and I), which exhibit graphene-like band structures with linearly-dispersing Dirac-cone states over large energy scales (0.8~1.8 eV) and ultra-high Fermi velocities comparable to graphene. The electronic and topological properties are found to be highly tunable and amenable to effective modulation via anion-layer substitution and vertical electric field. The electronic structures of several members of the family are shown to host a Van-Hove singularity (VHS) close to the energy of…
Dirac point in two-dimensional (2D) materials has been a fascinating subject of research. Recently, it has been theoretically predicted that Dirac point may also be stabilized in 2D magnetic systems. However, it remains a challenge to identify concrete 2D materials which host such magnetic Dirac point. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we propose a stable 2D material, the monolayers TaCoTe$_2$, as an antiferromagnetic (AFM) 2D Dirac material. We show that it has an AFM ground state with an out-of-plane Néel vector. It hosts a pair of 2D AFM Dirac points on …
Dirac points in two-dimensional (2D) materials have been a fascinating subject of research, with graphene as the most prominent example. However, the Dirac points in existing 2D materials, including graphene, are vulnerable against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we propose a new family of stable 2D materials, the HfGeTe-family monolayers, which represent the first example to host so-called spin-orbit Dirac points (SDPs) close to the Fermi level. These Dirac points are special in that they are formed only under significant SOC, …
$k$ paths exactly with $C_{3v}$ symmetry allow to find triply degenerate points (TDPs) in band structures. The paths that host the type-II Dirac points in PtSe$_2$ family materials also have the $C_{3v}$ spatial symmetry. However, due to Kramers degeneracy (the systems have both inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry), the crossing points in them are Dirac ones. In this work, based on symmetry analysis, first-principles calculations, and $k\cdot p$ method, we predict that PtSe$_2$ family materials should undergo topological transitions if the inversion symmetry is broken, \emph{i.e.} th…
The paper presents the author view on spin-rooted properties of graphene supported by numerous experimental and calculation evidences. Dirac fermions of crystalline graphene and local spins of graphene molecules are suggested to meet a strict demand - different orbitals for different spins- which leads to a large spectrum of effects caused by spin polarization of electronic states. The consequent topological non-triviality, making graphene topological insulator, and local spins, imaging graphene chemical activity, are proposed to discuss such peculiar properties of graphene as high temperature…
Two samples of the [Ca$_2$CoO$_{3-t}$]$_{0.62}$(CoO$_2$) misfit cobaltate, often denoted as the Ca$_{3}$Co$_{3.93}$O$_{9}$ phase, were prepared from the same ceramic material by the oxygen and argon annealing, resulting in different carrier concentrations in the conducting CoO$_{2}$ layers, n=0.31 and 0.19 hole/Co, respectively. Electrical and thermal transport properties were studied in dependence of magnetic field up to 140 kOe. The magnetothermopower data reveal an extra spin-entropy contribution to Seebeck coefficient that is not expected for carriers of Fermi liquid character. Its magnitu…
The band structure of cubic inverse perovskites, Ca_3PbO and its family, are investigated with the first-principles method. A close observation of the band structure reveals that six equivalent Dirac electrons with a very small mass exist on the line connecting the Gamma- and X-points, and at the symmetrically equivalent points in the Brillouin zone. The discovered Dirac electrons are three-dimensional and remarkably located exactly at the Fermi energy. A tight-binding model describing the low-energy band structure is also constructed and used to discuss the origin of the Dirac electrons in th…
High-order topological charge is of intensive interest in the field of topological matters. In real materials, cubic Dirac point is rare and the chiral charge of one Weyl point (WP) has never be found to exceed |C| = 3 for spin- 1/2 electronic systems. In this work, we argue that a cubic Dirac point can result in one quadruple WP (|C| = 4 with double band degeneracy) when time-reversal symmetry is broken, provided that this cubic Dirac point is away from the high-symmetry points and involves coupling of eight bands, rather than four bands that were thought to be sufficient to describe a Dirac …
High resolution angle resolved photoemission measurements and band structure calculations are carried out to study the electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$. All the observed bands are nearly linear that extend to a wide energy range. The measured Fermi surface mainly consists of one hole pocket around $Γ$ and a strong spot at Y which are formed from the crossing points of the linear bands. The measured electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$ is unusual and deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. These results will stimulate further efforts to theoretically understand the electronic st…
Recent synthesis of monolayer borophene (triangle boron monolayer) on the substrate opens the era of boron nanosheet (Science, 350, 1513, $\mathbf{2015}$), but the structural stability and novel physical properties are still open issues. Here we demonstrated borophene can be stabilized with fully surface hydrogenation, called as borophane, from first-principles calculations. Most interesting, it shows that borophane has direction-dependent Dirac cones, which are mainly contributed by in-plane \emph{p$_{x}$} and \emph{p$_{y}$} orbitals of boron atoms. The Dirac fermions possess an ultrahigh Fer…
We theoretically predict that a large variety of Dirac-cone materials can be constructed in Bi${}_{1-x}$Sb${}_{x}$ thin films, and we here show how to construct single-, bi- and tri- Dirac-cone materials with various amounts of wave vector anisotropy. These different types of Dirac cones can be of special interest to electronic devices design, quantum electrodynamics and other fields.
It is a persisting pursuit to use metal as a channel material in a field effect transistor. All metallic transistor can be fabricated from pristine semimetallic Dirac materials (such as graphene, silicene, and germanene), but the on/off current ratio is very low. In a vertical heterostructure composed by two Dirac materials, the Dirac cones of the two materials survive the weak interlayer van der Waals interaction based on density functional theory method, and electron transport from the Dirac cone of one material to the one of the other material is therefore forbidden without assistance of ph…
Dirac and Weyl materials refer to a class of solid materials which host low-energy quasiparticle excitations that can be described by the Dirac and Weyl equations in relativistic quantum mechanics. Starting with the advent of graphene as the first prominent example, these materials have been attracting tremendous interest owing to their novel fundamental properties as well as the great potential for applications. Here we introduce the basic concepts and notions related to Dirac and Weyl materials and briefly review some recent works in this field, particularly on the conceptual development and…
Phonons are an ideal platform for realizing stable spinless two-dimensional (2D) Dirac points because they have a bosonic nature and hard-to-break time-reversal symmetry. It should be noted that the twofold degenerate nodal points in the phonon dispersions of almost all reported 2D materials are misclassified as 'Dirac points' owing to a historical issue. The correct name for these twofold degenerate nodal points should be 'Weyl' because 2D phononic systems are essentially spinless and because each twofold degenerate point is described by a Weyl model in two dimensions. To date, there have bee…
We suggest the tried approach of impurity band engineering to produce flat bands and additional nodes in Dirac materials. We show that surface impurities give rise to nearly flat impurity bands close to the Dirac point. The hybridization of the Dirac nodal state induces the splitting of the surface Dirac nodes and the appearance of new nodes at high-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. The results are robust and not model dependent: the tight-binding calculations are supported by a low-energy effective model of a topological insulator surface state hybridized with an impurity band. Finally, …
Recent pump-probe experiments demonstrate the possibility that Dirac materials may be driven into transient excited states describable by two chemical potentials, one for the electrons and one for the holes. Given the Dirac nature of the spectrum, such an inverted population allows the optical tunability of the density of states of the electrons and holes, effectively offering control of the strength of the Coulomb interaction. Here we discuss the feasibility of realizing transient excitonic instabilities in optically-pumped Dirac materials. We demonstrate, theoretically, the reduction of the …
A wide range of materials, like d-wave superconductors, graphene, and topological insulators, share a fundamental similarity: their low-energy fermionic excitations behave as massless Dirac particles rather than fermions obeying the usual Schrodinger Hamiltonian. This emergent behavior of Dirac fermions in condensed matter systems defines the unifying framework for a class of materials we call "Dirac materials''. In order to establish this class of materials, we illustrate how Dirac fermions emerge in multiple entirely different condensed matter systems and we discuss how Dirac fermions have b…
Magnetoresistance in many samples of Dirac semimetal and topological insulator displays non-monotonic behaviors over a wide range of magnetic field. Here a formula of magnetoconductivity is presented for massless and massive Dirac fermions in Dirac materials due to quantum interference in scalar impurity scattering potentials. It reveals a striking crossover from positive to negative magnetoresistivity, uncovering strong competition between weak localization and weak antilocalization in multiple Cooperon modes at different chemical potentials, effective masses and finite temperatures. The work…
We present a short pedagogical introduction to the physics of Dirac materials, restricted to graphene and two- dimensional topological insulators. We start with a brief reminder of the Dirac and Weyl equations in the particle physics context. Turning to condensed matter systems, semimetallic graphene and various Dirac insulators are introduced, including the Haldane and the Kane-Mele topological insulators. We also discuss briefly experimental realizations in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.
Recently a paper by Lin and Ku \cite{lin} was posted, where the authors propose a very interesting idea to engineer the Dirac points in material which originally did not have such points by inducing a CDW state through introduction of impurities like vacancy, substitution, or intercalation. In this comment we would like to explain the appearance of the Dirac points in such engineered structures by symmetry arguments.
We study the mass fluctuations in gapped Dirac materials by treating the mass-term as both a continuous and discrete random variable. Gapped Dirac materials were proposed to be used as materials for Dark matter sensors. One thus would need to estimate the role of disorder and fluctuations on the interband absorption of dark matter. We find that both continuous and discrete fluctuations across the sample introduce tails (e.g. Lifshitz tails) in the density of states and the interband absorption rate. We estimate the strength of the gap filling and discuss implications of these fluctuations on t…
Two-dimensional (2D) semi-Dirac materials are characterized by a quadratic dispersion in one direction and a linear dispersion along the orthogonal direction. We study the topological phase transition in such 2D systems in the presence of an electromagnetic field. We show that a Chern insulating state emerges in a semi-Dirac system with two gapless Dirac nodes in the presence of light. In particular, we show that the intensity of a circularly polarized light can be used as a knob to generate topological states with nonzero Chern number. In addition, for fixed intensity and frequency of the lig…
Extensive studies of electron transport in Dirac materials have shown positive magneto-resistance (MR) and positive magneto-thermopower (MTP) in a magnetic field perpendicular to the excitation current or thermal gradient. In contrast, measurements of electron transport often show a negative longitudinal MR and negative MTP for a magnetic field oriented along the excitation current or thermal gradient; this is attributed to the chiral anomaly in Dirac materials. Here, we report a very different magneto-thermoelectric transport behavior in the massive Dirac material ZrTe5. Although thin flakes …
Anisotropic bulk Dirac (or Weyl) cones in three dimensional systems have recently gained intense research interest as they are examples of materials with tilted Dirac (or Weyl) cones indicatig the violation of Lorentz invariance. In contrast, the studies on anisotropic surface Dirac cones in topological materials which contribute to anisotropic carrier mobility have been limited. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the anisotropic surface Dirac dispersion in a tetradymite material Ti2Te2P on the (001) plane of the Brillioun zone. …
Ballistic heterojunctions of Dirac materials offer the opportunity of exploring optics-like phenomena in electronic systems. In this paper, a new perfect lens through special positive refraction is predicted with omnidirectional Klein tunneling of massless Dirac fermions. The novel optics component called a super-diverging lens (SDL) is the counterpart of a Veselago lens (VL). The use of SDL and VL creates a device that simulates the ocular vision. This atypical refraction is due to electrons obeying different Snell's laws of pseudo-spin and group velocity in heterojunctions with elliptical Di…
Massive Dirac fermions break the chiral symmetry explicitly and also make the Berry curvature of the band structure non-Abelian. By utilizing the Green's function technique, we develop a microscopic theory to establish a set of quantum diffusive equations for massive Dirac materials in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. It is found that the longitudinal magnetoresistance is always negative and quadratic in the magnetic field, and decays quickly with the mass. The theory is applicable to the systems with non-Abelian Berry curvature and resolves the puzzles of anomalous magnetotranspo…
Electron supercollimation, in which a wavepacket is guided to move undistorted along a selected direction, is a highly desirable property that has yet been realized experimentally. Disorder in general is expected to inhibit supercollimation. Here, we report a counter-intuitive phenomenon of electron supercollimation by disorder in graphene and related Dirac fermion materials. We show that one can use one-dimensional disorder potentials to control electron wavepacket transport. This is distinct from known systems where an electron wavepacket would be further spread by disorder and hindered in t…
In this work, we provide a detailed derivation of Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation for two-dimensional (2D) gapped Dirac fermions under external fields and apply the formalism to study valley excitons in 2D semiconducting materials. Similar to relativistic quantum few-body problem, the gapped Dirac equation can be transformed into a Schrödinger equation with "relativistic" correction terms. In this 2D materials system, the correction terms can be interpreted as the Berry-curvature effect. The Hamiltonian for a valley exciton in external fields can be written based on the FW transformed Dir…
The Weyl semimetal NbP exhibits an extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) and an ultra-high mobility. The large MR originates from a combination of the nearly perfect compensation between electron- and hole-type charge carriers and the high mobility, which is relevant to the topological band structure. In this work we report on temperature- and field-dependent thermopower and thermal conductivity experiments on NbP. Additionally, we carried out complementary heat capacity, magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. We found a giant adiabatic magnetothermopower with a maximum of 80…
A data mining study of electronic Kohn-Sham band structures was performed to identify Dirac materials within the Organic Materials Database (OMDB). Out of that, the 3-dimensional organic crystal 5,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2-methoxy-1$H$-1,3-diazepine was found to host different Dirac line-nodes within the band structure. From a group theoretical analysis, it is possible to distinguish between Dirac line-nodes occurring due to 2-fold degenerate energy levels protected by the monoclinic crystalline symmetry and 2-fold degenerate accidental crossings protected by the topology of the electronic band…
We propose two novel two-dimensional topological Dirac materials, planar PtN4C2 and Pt2N8C6, which exhibit graphene-like electronic structures with linearly dispersive Dirac-cone states exactly at the Fermi level. Moreover, the Dirac cone is anisotropic, resulting in anisotropic Fermi velocities and making it possible to realize orientation-dependent quantum devices. Using the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have systemically studied the structural, electronic, and topological properties. We find that spin-orbit coupling opens a sizable topological band gap so that the m…
The effect of the Dirac cone tilt of anisotropic two-dimensional materials on the time evolution of coherent electron states in the presence of electric and magnetic fields is studied. We propose a canonical transformation that maps the anisotropic Dirac-Weyl Hamiltonian with tilted Dirac cones to an effective and isotropic Dirac Hamiltonian under these fields. In this way, the well-known Landau-level spectra and wave functions allow calculating the Wigner matrix representation of Landau and coherent states. We found a valley dependency in the behavior of the Wigner function for both Landau an…
The family of materials defined as ZrSiX (X = S, Se, Te) has been established as Dirac node-line semimetals, and subsequent study is urgent to exploit the promising application of unusual magnetoresistance property. In this work, we systematically investigated the anisotropic magnetoresistance in the newly-discovered Dirac node-line material ZrSiSe. By applying a magnetic field of 3 T by a vector field, the three-dimensional (3D) magnetoresistance (MR) shows strong anisotropy. The MR ratio of maximum and minimum directions can reach 7 at 3 T and keeps increasing at the higher magnetic field. T…
In topological quantum materials the conduction and valence bands are connected at points (Dirac/Weyl semimetals) or along lines (Line Node semimetals) in the momentum space. Numbers of studies demonstrated that several materials are indeed Dirac/Weyl semimetals. However, there is still no experimental confirmation of materials with line nodes, in which the Dirac nodes form closed loops in the momentum space. Here we report the discovery of a novel topological structure - Dirac node arcs - in the ultrahigh magnetoresistive material PtSn4 using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc…
Initiated by the discovery of topological insulators, topologically non-trivial materials, more specifically topological semimetals and metals have emerged as new frontiers in the field of quantum materials. In this work, we perform a systematic measurement of EuMg2Bi2, a compound with antiferromagnetic transition temperature at 6.7 K, observed via electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat capacity measurements. By utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in concurrence with first-principles calculations, we observe Dirac cones at the corner and the zone center of the …
Dirac semimetal (DSM) hosts four-fold degenerate isolated band-crossing points with linear dispersion, around which the quasiparticles resemble the relativistic Dirac Fermions. It can be described by a 4 * 4 massless Dirac Hamiltonian which can be decomposed into a pair of Weyl points or gaped into an insulator. Thus, crystal symmetry is critical to guarantee the stable existence. On the contrary, by breaking crystal symmetry, a DSM may transform into a Weyl semimetal (WSM) or a topological insulator (TI). Here, by taking hexagonal LiAuSe as an example, we find that it is a starfruit shaped mu…
Topological materials in crystal solids, including topological insulators (TIs), topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), topological Dirac semimetals (DSMs), topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs), topological Dirac or Weyl nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) and beyond, are mainly featured with topological, protected non-trivial surface states, and their bulk phases are insulators or semimetals with the proper presence of Dirac cones, Weyl nodes or Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi level. The author suggests a two-step computational screening strategy of 3D topological materials by mixing chemistry…
We demonstrate how a Dirac-like magnon spectrum is generated for localized magnetic moments forming a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. The Dirac crossing point is proven to be robust against magnon-magnon interactions, as these only shift the spectrum. Local defects induce impurity resonances near the Dirac point, as well as magnon Friedel oscillations. The energy of the Dirac point is controlled by the exchange coupling, and thus a two-dimensional array of magnetic dots is an experimentally feasible realization of Dirac magnons with tunable dispersion.
Recently, many unexpected fine structures in electric, magnetic, and thermoelectric responses at extremely magnetic fields in topological materials have attracted tremendous interest. We propose a new mechanism of quantum oscillation beyond the strong-field quantum limit for Dirac fermions. The amplitude of the oscillation is far larger than the usual Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation. The oscillation tends to be periodic in the magnetic field B, instead of 1/B. The period of the oscillation does not depend on the Fermi energy. These behaviors cannot be described by the famous Lifshitz-Kosevich f…
Two-dimensional Dirac physics has aroused great interests in condensed matter physics ever since the discovery of graphene and topological insulators due to its importance in both fundamental physics and device applications. The ability to control the properties of Dirac cones, such as bandgap and Fermi velocity, is essential for the occurrence of various new phenomena and the development of next-generation electronic devices. Based on first-principles calculations and an analytical effective model, we propose a new Dirac system with eight Dirac cones in thin films of the (LaO)2(SbSe2)2 family…
We show that electron-phonon interactions can alter the topological properties of Dirac insulators and semimetals, both at zero and nonzero temperature. Contrary to the common belief that increasing temperature always destabilizes topological phases, our results highlight instances in which phonons may lead to the appearance of topological surface states above a crossover temperature in a material that has a topologically trivial ground state.
We report the synthesis of high quality single crystals of BaMnBi2 and investigate the transport properties of the samples. The Hall data reveals electron-type carriers and a mobility mu(5K) =1500cm2/Vs. The temperature dependence of magnetization displays behavior that is different from CaMnBi2 or SrMnBi2 , which suggests the possible different magnetic structure of BaMnBi2. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance reveals the quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface. A crossover from semiclassical MR-H2 dependence in low field to MR-H dependence in high field is observed in transverse magnetoresistance.…
