This paper presents two observability inequalities for the heat equation over $Ω\times(0,T)$. In the first one, the observation is from a subset of positive measure in $Ω\times(0,T)$, while in the second, the observation is from a subset of positive surface measure in $\partialΩ\times(0,T)$. It also proves the Lebeau-Robbiano spectral inequality when $Ω$ is a bounded Lipschitz and locally star-shaped domain. Some applications for the above-mentioned observability inequalities are provided.
In this paper we prove an observability inequality for a degenerate transport equation. First we introduce a local in time Carleman estimate for the degenerate equation, then we apply it to obtain a global in time observability inequality by using also an energy estimate.
In this paper we will consider oscillations of square viscoelastic membranes by adding to the wave equation another term, which takes into account the memory. To this end, we will study a class of integrodifferential equations in square domains. By using accurate estimates of the spectral properties of the integrodifferential operator, we will prove an inverse observability inequality.
We survey some of our recent results on inverse problems for evolution equations. The goal is to provide a unified approach to solve various types of evolution equations. The inverse problems we consider consist in determining unknown coefficients from boundary measurements by varying initial conditions. Based on observability inequalities and a special choice of initial conditions, we provide uniqueness and stability estimates for the recovery of volume and boundary lower order coefficients in wave and heat equations. Some of the results presented here are slightly improved from their origina…
We are mainly interested in extending the known results on ob-servability inequalities and stabilization for the Schr{ö}dinger equation to the magnetic Schr{ö}dinger equation. That is in presence of a magnetic potential. We establish observability inequalities and exponential stabilization by extending the usual multiplier method, under the same geometric condition to that needed for the Schr{ö}dinger equation. We also prove, with the help of elliptic Carleman inequalities, logarithmic stabilization results through a resolvent estimate. Although the approach is classical, these results on loga…

Observability inequalities on lattice points are established for non-negative solutions of the heat equation with potentials in the whole space. As applications, some controllability results of heat equations are derived by the above-mentioned observability inequalities.
We develop a new abstract derivation of the observability inequalities at two points in time for Schrödinger type equations. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step we prove a Nazarov type uncertainty principle associated with a non-negative self-adjoint operator $H$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In the second step we use results on asymptotic behavior of $e^{-itH}$, in particular, minimal velocity estimates introduced by Sigal and Soffer. Such observability inequalities are closely related to unique continuation problems as well as controllability for the Schrödinger equation.
In this paper, we study quantitative spatial analytic bounds and unique continuation inequalities of solutions for fractional heat equations with an analytic lower order term on the whole space. At first, we show that the solution has a uniform positive analytic radius for all time, and the solution enjoys a log-type ultra-analytic bound if the coefficient is ultra-analytic. Second, we prove a Hölder type interpolation inequality on a thick set, with an explicit dependence on the analytic radius of coefficient. Finally, by the telescoping series method, we establish an observability inequality…
We consider the transport equation $\ppp_t u(x,t) + H(t)\cdot \nabla u(x,t) = 0$ in $\OOO\times(0,T),$ where $T>0$ and $\OOO\subset \R^d $ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary $\ppp\OOO$. First, we prove a Carleman estimate for solutions of finite energy with piecewise continuous weight functions. Then, under a further condition which guarantees that the orbits of $H$ intersect $\ppp\OOO$, we prove an energy estimate which in turn yields an observability inequality. Our results are motivated by applications to inverse problems.
In this paper we establish an observability inequality for the heat equation with bounded potentials on the whole space. Roughly speaking, such a kind of inequality says that the total energy of solutions can be controlled by the energy localized in a subdomain, which is equidistributed over the whole space. The proof of this inequality is mainly adapted from the parabolic frequency function method, which plays an important role in proving the unique continuation property for solutions of parabolic equations. As an immediate application, we show that the null controllability holds for the heat…
We establish new Carleman estimates for the wave equation, which we then apply to derive novel observability inequalities for a general class of linear wave equations. The main features of these inequalities are that (a) they apply to a fully general class of time-dependent domains, with timelike moving boundaries, (b) they apply to linear wave equations in any spatial dimension and with general time-dependent lower-order coefficients, and (c) they allow for significantly smaller time-dependent regions of observations than allowed from existing Carleman estimate methods. As a standard applicat…
We investigate observability and Lipschitz stability for the Heisenberg heat equation on the rectangular domain $$Ω= (-1,1)\times\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{T}$$ taking as observation regions slices of the form $ω=(a,b) \times \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{T}$ or tubes $ω= (a,b) \times ω_y \times \mathbb{T}$, with $-1<a<b<1$. We prove that observability fails for an arbitrary time $T>0$ but both observability and Lipschitz stability hold true after a positive minimal time, which depends on the distance between $ω$ and the boundary of $Ω$: $$T_{\min} \geqslant \frac{1}{8} \min\{(1+a)^2,(1-b)^2\}.$$ Our…
We present several characterizations, via some weak observability inequalities, on the complete stabilizability for a control system $[A,B]$, i.e., $y'(t)=Ay(t)+Bu(t)$, $t\geq 0$, where $A$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup on a Hilbert space $X$ and $B$ is a linear and bounded operator from another Hilbert space $U$ to $X$. We then extend the aforementioned characterizations in two directions: first, the control operator $B$ is unbounded; second, the control system is time-periodic. We also give some sufficient conditions, from the perspective of the spectral projections, to ensure the weak observa…
We study non-autonomous observation systems \begin{align*} \dot{x}(t) = A(t) x(t),\quad y(t) = C(t) x(t),\quad x(0) = x_0\in X, \end{align*} where $(A(t))$ is a strongly measurable family of closed operators on a Banach space $X$ and $(C(t))$ is a family of bounded observation operators from $X$ to a Banach space $Y$. Based on an abstract uncertainty principle and a dissipation estimate, we prove that the observation system satisfies a final-state observability estimate in $\mathrm{L}^r(E; Y)$ for measurable subsets $E \subseteq [0,T], T > 0$. We present applications of the above result to fam…
We consider the wave equation on a closed Riemannian manifold. We observe the restriction of the solutions to a measurable subset $ω$ along a time interval $[0, T]$ with $T>0$. It is well known that, if $ω$ is open and if the pair $(ω,T)$ satisfies the Geometric Control Condition then an observability inequality is satisfied, comparing the total energy of solutions to their energy localized in $ω\times (0, T)$. The observability constant $C\_T(ω)$ is then defined as the infimum over the set of all nontrivial solutions of the wave equation of the ratio of localized energy of solutions over thei…
The purpose of this note is to use the results and methods of our previous work with Bourgain to obtain control and observability by rough functions and sets on rectangular 2-tori. We show that any Lebesgue measurable set of positive measure can be used for observability for the Schroedinger equation. This leads to controllability with rough localization and control functions. For non-empty open sets this follows from the results of Haraux '89 and Jaffard '89 while for square tori and sufficiently long times this can be deduced from the results of Jakobson '97.

Let $d \ge 1$, $p \ge d$, and let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove some exponential integrability in the spirit of Moser-Trudinger's inequalities for measurable functions $u$ defined in $Ω$ such that $$ \mathop{\int_Ω \int_Ω}_{|u(x) - u(y)| > δ} \frac{1}{|x-y|^{d+p}} \, dx \, dy < + \infty, $$ for some $δ> 0$. This double integral appeared in characterizations of Sobolev spaces and involved in improvements of the Sobolev inequaliies, Poincaré inequalities, and Hardy inequalities.
In this paper, we study the Hölder-type interpolation inequality and observability inequality from measurable sets in time for parabolic equations either with L^p unbounded potentials or with electric potentials. The parabolic equations under consideration evolve in bounded C^{1,1} domains of R^N (N\geq3) with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The approach for the interpolation inequality is based on a modified reduction method and some stability estimates for the corresponding elliptic operator.
