In this paper we introduce a perturbatively super-renormalizable and unitary theory of quantum gravity in any dimension D. The theory presents two entire functions, a.k.a. "form factors", and a finite number of local operators required by the quantum consistency of the theory itself. The main reason to introduce the entire functions is to avoid ghosts (states of negative norm) like the one in the four-dimensional Stelle's theory. The new theory is indeed ghost-free since the two entire functions have the property to generalize the Einstein-Hilbert action without introducing new poles in the propagator. The theory is renormalizable at one loop and finite from two loops upward. In this paper we essentially study three classes of form factors, systematically showing the tree-level unitarity. We prove that the gravitation potential is regular in r = 0 for all the choices of form factors compatible with renormalizability and unitarity. We also include Black hole spherical symmetric solutions omitting higher curvature corrections to the equation of motions. For two out of three form factors the solutions are regular and the classical singularity is replaced by a "de Sitter-like core" in r=0. For one particular choice of the form factors, we prove that the D-dimensional "Newtonian cosmology" is singularity-free and the Universe spontaneously follows a de Sitter evolution at the "Planck scale" for any matter content. We conclude the article stating that, in the ultraviolet regime, the spectral dimension takes on different values for the three cases: less than or equal to "1" for the first case, "0" for the second one and "2" for the third one. Once the class of theories compatible with renormalizability and unitarity is defined, the spectral dimension has the same short-distance "critical value" or "accumulation point" for any value of the topological dimension D.
We advance a class of unitary higher derivative theories of gravity that realize an ultraviolet completion of Einstein general relativity in any dimension. This range of theories is marked by an entire function, which averts extra degrees of freedom (including poltergeists) and improves the high energy behavior of the loop amplitudes. It is proved that only one-loop divergences survive and the theory can be made super-renormalizable regardless of the spacetime dimension. Moreover, using the Pauli-Villars regularization procedure introduced by Diaz-Troost-van Nieuwenhuizen-van Proeyen (DTPN) an…
We review a class of higher derivative theories of gravity consistent at quantum level. This class is marked by a non-polynomal entire function (form factor), which averts extra degrees of freedom (including ghosts) and improves the high energy behaviour of the loop amplitudes. By power counting arguments, it is proved that the theory is super-renormalizable, i.e. only one-loop divergences survive. At classical level, black holes and cosmological solutions are singularity free.
In this paper we consider the relation between the super-renormalizable theories of quantum gravity (SRQG) studied in [arXiv:1110.5249v2, arXiv:1202.0008] and an underlying non-commutativity of spacetime. For one particular super-renormalizable theory we show that at linear level (quadratic in the Lagrangian) the propagator of the theory is the same we obtain starting from a theory of gravity endowed with θ-Poincaré quantum groups of symmetry. Such a theory is over the so called θ-Minkowski non-commuative spacetime. We shed new light on this link and show that among the theories considered in …
We explore how the stability of metric perturbations in higher derivative theories of gravity depends on the energy scale of initial seeds of such perturbations and on a typical energy scale of the gravitational vacuum background. It is shown that, at least in the cases of specific cosmological backgrounds, that the unphysical massive ghost which is present in the spectrum of such theories is not growing up as a physical excitation and remains in the vacuum state, until the initial frequency of the perturbation is close to the Planck order of magnitude. In this situation the existing versions …
In this paper we study perturbatively an extension of the Stelle higher derivative gravity involving an infinite number of derivative terms. We know that the usual quadratic action is renormalizable but suffers of the unitarity problem because of the presence of a ghost (state of negative norm) in the theory. The new theory is instead ghost-free since the introduction of (in general) two entire functions in the model with the property do not introduce new poles in the propagator. The local high derivative theory is recovered expanding the entire functions to the lowest order in the mass scale …
We investigate a (super-)renormalizable and ghost-free theory of gravity, showing that under a natural (exponential) ansatz of the form factor and a suitable truncation it can give rise to the Starobinsky inflationary theory in cosmological frameworks, and thus offering a theoretical justification of its origin. We study the corresponding inflationary evolution and we examine the generation of curvature perturbations, adapting the $f(R)$-like equations in a symmetry-reduced FLRW metric. Furthermore, we analyze how the ultraviolet regime of a simply renormalizable and unitary theory of gravity …
We propose a class of multidimensional higher derivative theories of gravity without extra real degrees of freedom besides the graviton field. The propagator shows up the usual real graviton pole and extra complex conjugates poles that do not contribute to the absorptive part of the physical scattering amplitudes. Indeed, they may consistently be excluded from the asymptotic observable states of the theory making use of the Lee-Wick and Cutkoski, Landshoff, Olive and Polkinghorne prescription for the construction of a unitary S-matrix. Therefore, the spectrum consists on the graviton and short…
In this paper we study perturbatively an extension of the Stelle higher derivative gravity involving an infinite number of derivative terms. We know that the usual quadratic action is renormalizable but is not unitary because of the presence of a ghost in the theory (pole with negative residue in the propagator). The new theory is instead ghost-free since an entire function (or form factor) is introduced in the model without involving new poles in the propagator. The local high derivative theory is recovered expanding the entire functions to the lowest order in the mass scale of the theory. An…
A perturbative non-renormalization theorem is presented that applies to general supersymmetric theories, including non-renormalizable theories in which the $\int d^2θ$ integrand is an arbitrary gauge-invariant function $F(Φ,W)$ of the chiral superfields $Φ$ and gauge field-strength superfields $W$, and the $\int d^4θ$-integrand is restricted only by gauge invariance. In the Wilsonian Lagrangian, $F(Φ,W)$ is unrenormalized except for the one-loop renormalization of the gauge coupling parameter, and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms can be renormalized only by one-loop graphs, which cancel if the sum of th…
Black holes supported by self-interacting conformal scalar fields can be considered as renormalizably dressed since the conformal potential is nothing but the top power-counting renormalizable self-interaction in the relevant dimension. On the other hand, potentials defined by powers which are lower than the conformal one are also phenomenologically relevant since they are in fact super-renormalizable. In this work we provide a new map that allows to build black holes dressed with all the (super-)renormalizable contributions starting from known conformal seeds. We explicitly construct several …
The recent Planck data of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies support the Starobinsky theory in which the quadratic Ricci scalar drives cosmic inflation. We build up a multi-dimensional quantum consisted ultraviolet completion of the model in a phenomenological "bottom-up approach". We present the maximal class of theories compatible with unitarity and (super-)renormalizability or finiteness which reduces to the Starobinsky theory in the low-energy limit. The outcome is a maximal extension of the Krasnikov-Tomboulis-Modesto theory including an extra scalar degree of free…
We construct and discuss a 6D supersymmetric gauge theory involving four derivatives in the action. The theory involves a dimensionless coupling constant and is renormalizable. At the tree level, it enjoys N = (1,0) superconformal symmetry, but the latter is broken by quantum anomaly. Our study should be considered as preparatory for seeking an extended version of this theory which would hopefully preserve conformal symmetry at the full quantum level and be ultraviolet-finite.
We develop a self-consistent $Spin(4,4)$-invariant model of the unification of gravity with weak $SU(2)$ gauge and Higgs fields in the visible and invisible sectors of our Universe. We consider a general case of the graviweak unification, including the higher-derivative super-renormalizable theory of gravity, which is a unitary, asymptotically-free and perturbatively consistent theory of the quantum gravity.
One of the main advantages of super-renormalizable higher derivative quantum gravity models is the possibility to derive exact beta functions, by making perturbative one-loop calculations. We perform such a calculation for the Newton constant by using the Barvinsky-Vilkovisky trace technology. The result is well-defined in a large class of models of gravity in the sense that the renormalization group beta functions do not depend on the gauge-fixing condition. Finally, we discuss the possibility to apply the results to a large class of nonlocal gravitational theories which are free of massive g…

The Higgs portal of the Standard Model provides the opportunity for coupling to a very light scalar field $ϕ$ via the super-renormalizable operator $ϕ(H^\dagger H)$. This allows for the existence of a very light scalar dark matter that has coherent interaction with the Standard Model particles and yet has its mass protected against radiative corrections. We analyze ensuing constraints from the fifth-force measurements, along with the cosmological requirements. We find that the detectable level of the fifth-force can be achieved in models with low inflationary scales, and certain amount of fine…
We consider nonanticommutative SYM theories with chiral matter in the adjoint representation of the SU(N) x U(1) gauge group. In a superspace setup and manifest background covariant approach we investigate the one-loop renormalization of the theory when a cubic superpotential is present. The structure of the divergent terms reveals that the theory simply obtained from the ordinary one by trading products for star products is not renormalizable. Moreover, because of the different renormalization undergone by the abelian field compared to the non-abelian ones, the superpotential seems to be inco…
In this paper we show that there is a Lipatov bound for the radius of convergence for superficially divergent one-particle irreducible Green functions in a renormalizable quantum field theory if there is such a bound for the superficially convergent ones. The radius of convergence turns out to be ${\rm min}\{ρ,1/b_1\}$, where $ρ$ is the bound on the convergent ones, the instanton radius, and $b_1$ the first coefficient of the $β$-function.
In this paper we study an N=1 supersymmetric extension of a perturbatively super-renormalizable (nonlocal)theory of gravity in four dimensions. The nonlocal supergravity theory is power-counting super-renormalizable and tree level unitary with the same particle content of the local N=1 supergravity (as simple example, unitarity of the three dimensional N=1 and N=2 supergravity is proved). We believe that extended SO(N) supergravity, for N=4 or N=8, might be free from divergences also at one loop. The extended supergravities would then result finite at any order in the loop expansion.
We perform a supergraph computation of the effective Kaehler potential at one and two loops for general four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theories described by arbitrary Kaehler potential, superpotential and gauge kinetic function. We only insist on gauge invariance of the Kaehler potential and the superpotential as we heavily rely on its consequences in the quantum theory. However, we do not require gauge invariance for the gauge kinetic functions, so that our results can also be applied to anomalous theories that involve the Green-Schwarz mechanism. We illustrate our two loop results by co…
The class of covariant gravity theories which have nice ultraviolet behavior and seem to be (super)-renormalizable is proposed. The apparent breaking of Lorentz invariance occurs due to the coupling with the effective fluid which is induced by Lagrange multiplier constrained scalar field. Spatially-flat FRW cosmology for such covariant field gravity may have accelerating solutions. Renormalizable versions of more complicated modified gravity which depends on Riemann and Ricci tensor squared may be constructed in the same way.
We construct a deformed Wess-Zumino model on the noncommutative superspace where the Bosonic and Fermionic coordinates are no longer commutative with each other. Using the background field method, we calculate the primary one-loop effective action based on the deformed action. By comparing the two actions, we find that the deformed Wess-Zumino model is not renormalizable. To obtain a renormalizable model, we combine the primary one-loop effective action with the deformed action, and then calculate the secondary one-loop effective action based on the combined action. After repeating this proces…
We hereby introduce and extensively study a class of non-polynomial higher derivative theories of gravity that realize a ultraviolet (UV) completion of Einstein general relativity. These theories are unitary (ghost free) and at most only one-loop divergences survive. The outcome is a class of theories super-renormalizable in even dimension and finite in odd dimension. Moreover, we explicitly prove in D=4 that there exists an extension of the theory that is completely finite and all the beta functions vanish even at one-loop. These results can be easily extended in extra dimensions and it is li…
We consider a general d=4 N=1 globally supersymmetric lagrangian involving chiral and vector superfields, with arbitrary superpotential, Kahler potential and gauge kinetic function. We compute perturbative quantum corrections by employing a component field approach that respects supersymmetry and background gauge invariance. In particular, we obtain the full one-loop correction to the Kahler potential in supersymmetric Landau gauge. Two derivations of this result are described. The non-renormalization of the superpotential and the quadratic correction to the Fayet-Iliopoulos terms are further …
We hereby present a class of multidimensional higher derivative theories of gravity that realizes an ultraviolet completion of Einstein general relativity. This class is marked by a "non-polynomal" entire function (form factor), which averts extra degrees of freedom (including ghosts) and improves the high energy behavior of the loop amplitudes. By power counting arguments, it is proved that the theory is super-renormalizable in any dimension, i.e. only one-loop divergences survive. Furthermore, in odd dimensions there are no counter terms for pure gravity and the theory turns out to be "finit…
We explicitly compute the tree-level on-shell four-graviton amplitudes in four, five and six dimensions for local and weakly nonlocal gravitational theories that are quadratic in both, the Ricci and scalar curvature with form factors of the d'Alembertian operator inserted between. More specifically we are interested in renormalizable, super-renormalizable or finite theories. The scattering amplitudes for these theories turn out to be the same as the ones of Einstein gravity regardless of the explicit form of the form factors. As a special case the four-graviton scattering amplitudes in Weyl co…
The Wess-Zumino model on N=1/2 nonanticommutative superspace, which contains the dimension-6 term F^3, is shown to be renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory, upon adding F and F^2 terms to the original Lagrangian. The renormalizability is possible, even with this higher-dimension operator, because the Lagrangian is not hermitian. Such deformed field theories arise naturally in string theory with a graviphoton background.
We consider the diffeomorphism invariant gravity coupled with the ideal fluid in the non-standard way. The Lorentz-invariance of the graviton propagator in such a theory considered as perturbation over flat background turns out to be broken due to non-standard coupling with the ideal fluid. As a result the behavior of the propagator in the ultraviolet/infrared region indicates that some versions of such theory are (super-)renormalizable ones (with appearance of only physical transverse modes). The FRW cosmology in same cases may be different from the one in General Relativity with the possible…
It is well known that standard gauge theories are renormalizable in D=4 while Einstein gravity is renormalizable in D=2. This is where the research in the field of two derivatives theories is currently standing. We hereby present a class of weakly non-local higher derivative gravitational and gauge theories universally consistent at quantum level in any spacetime dimension. These theories are unitary (ghost-free) and perturbatively renormalizable. Moreover, we can always find a simple extension of these theories that is super-renormalizable or finite at quantum level in even and odd spacetime …
The multidimensional N=4 supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) is constructed and the various possibilities for partial supersymmetry breaking are discussed. It is shown that quantum mechanical models with one quarter, one half and three quarters of unbroken(broken) supersymmetries can exist in the framework of the multidimensional N=4 SUSY QM.
The multidimensional N=4 supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) is constructed using the superfield approach. As a result, the component form of the classical and quantum Lagrangian and Hamiltonian is obtained. In the considered SUSY QM both classical and quantum N=4 algebras include central charges, and this opens various possibilities for partial supersymmetry breaking. It is shown that quantum mechanical models with one quarter, one half and three quarters of unbroken(broken) supersymmetries can exist in the framework of the multidimensional N=4 SUSY QM, while the one-dimensional N=4 SU…
The integrals defining the two-loop beta-function for the general renormalizable N=1 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives, are investigated. It is shown that they are given by integrals of double total derivatives. These integrals are not equal to zero due to appearing of delta-functions. These delta-functions allow to reduce the two-loop integrals to one-loop integrals, which can be easily calculated. The result agrees with the exact NSVZ beta-function and calculations made by different methods.
To construct renormalizable gauge model in Bosonic-Fermionic noncommutative (BFNC) superspace, we replace the ordinary products of super Yang-Mills model by BFNC star products. To study the renormalization property of the deformed action, we obtain the one-loop 1PI effective action by using background field method at the first order of BFNC parameters. We also verify the BFNC supergauge invariance of the effective action. Because there are new terms in effective action, the deformed action is not renormalizable. This imply that additional terms should be added to the deformed action.
The standard formulation of a massive Abelian vector field in $2+1$ dimensions involves a Maxwell kinetic term plus a Chern-Simons mass term; in its place we consider a Chern-Simons kinetic term plus a Stuekelberg mass term. In this latter model, we still have a massive vector field, but now the interaction with a charged spinor field is renormalizable (as opposed to super renormalizable). By choosing an appropriate gauge fixing term, the Stuekelberg auxiliary scalar field decouples from the vector field. The one-loop spinor self energy is computed using operator regularization, a technique wh…
The conformal supergravity is suggested as a realistic theory for gravity interactions. It displays the spontaneous breaking of the conformal symmetry which results in appearance of the term proportional to the scalar curvature R in the effective potential with respect to small metric fluctuations.
Horava's "Lifschitz point gravity" has many desirable features, but in its original incarnation one is forced to accept a non-zero cosmological constant of the wrong sign to be compatible with observation. We develop an extension of Horava's model that abandons "detailed balance", and in 3+1 dimensions exhibit all five marginal (renormalizable) and four relevant (super-renormalizable) operators, as determined by power counting. We also consider the classical limit of this theory, evaluate the Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints, and extract the classical equations of motion in a form si…
In the framework of the four dimensional heterotic superstring with free world-sheet fermions we study the GUSTs which contain non-abelian horizontal symmetry. To solve the problem of breaking the G_GUT gauge symmetry of the level one current algebra we extend the gauge symmetry to G x G. Using the autoduality of the fermionic charge lattice we study the possibilities of constructing of some GUST gauge groups. We also study the string amplitudes and for one realistic model explicitly calculate the renormalizable and non-renormalizable (N=4,5,6) contributions to the superpotential. We observe t…
q-oscillator models are considered in two and higher dimensions and their symmetries are explored. New symmetries are found for both isotropic and anisotropic cases. Applications to the spectra of triatomic molecules and superdeformed nuclei are discussed.
In 2+1 dimensions, we propose a renormalizable non-linear sigma model action which describes the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric generalization of Galilean Electrodynamics. We first start with the simplest model obtained by null reduction of the relativistic Abelian $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric QED in 3+1 dimensions and study its renormalization properties directly in non-relativistic superspace. Despite the existence of a non-renormalization theorem induced by the causal structure of the non-relativistic dynamics, we find that the theory is non-renormalizable. Infinite dimensionless, supersy…
It is shown that the one-loop ultraviolet divergences in renormalizable supersymmetric theories can be regulated by the introduction of heavy Pauli-Villars chiral supermultiplets, provided the generators of the gauge group are traceless in the matter representation. The procedure is extended to include supersymmetric gauged nonlinear sigma models.
Based on the covariant background field method, we calculate the ultraviolet counter\-terms up to two-loop order and discuss the renormalizability of the three-dimensional non-linear sigma models with arbitrary Riemannian manifolds as target spaces. We investigate the bosonic model and its supersymmetric extension. We show that at the one-loop level these models are renormalizable and even finite when the manifolds are Ricci-flat. However, at the two-loop order, we find non-renormalizable counterterms in all cases considered, so the renormalizability and finiteness of such models are completel…
We consider the problem of Newtonian singularity in the wide class of higher derivative gravity models, including the ones which are renormalizable and super-renormalizable at the quantum level. The simplest version of the singularity-free theory has four derivatives and is pretty well-known. We argue that in all cases of local higher-derivative theories, when the poles of the propagator are real and simple, the singularities disappear due to the cancellation of contributions from scalar and tensor massive modes.
According to standard lore, perturbative series of super-renormalizable theories have only instanton singularities. In this paper we show that two-dimensional scalar theories with a spontaneously broken $O(N)$ symmetry at the classical level, which are super-renormalizable, have an IR renormalon singularity at large $N$. Since perturbative expansions in these theories are made around the "false vacuum" in which the global symmetry is broken, this singularity can be regarded as a manifestation of the non-perturbative absence of Goldstone bosons. We conjecture that the Borel singularity in the g…
