We present high-accuracy calculations of the density of states using multicanonical methods for lattice gauge theory with a compact gauge group U(1) on 4^4, 6^4 and 8^4 lattices. We show that the results are consistent with weak and strong coupling expansions. We present methods based on Chebyshev interpolations and Cauchy theorem to find the (Fisher's) zeros of the partition function in the complex beta=1/g^2 plane. The results are consistent with reweighting methods whenever the latter are accurate. We discuss the volume dependence of the imaginary part of the Fisher's zeros, the width and depth of the plaquette distribution at the value of beta where the two peaks have equal height. We discuss strategies to discriminate between first and second order transitions and explore them with data at larger volume but lower statistics. Higher statistics and even larger lattices are necessary to draw strong conclusions regarding the order of the transition.
Properties of pure gauge theories in thermal equilibrium as calculated via standard functional integral treatments are mathematically identical to ground state properties of a theory with spatially-periodic boundary conditions imposed on the gauge fields. Such a theory has states that have no analog in a theory in which only physical observables associated with gauge-invariant operators are required to be periodic, rather than the gauge fields themselves; these states are in topological sectors that do not exist in the unconstrained theory. The topology arises because the boundary conditions i…
The lattice regularized pure gauge compact U(1) theory is an ideal laboratory to explore how confinement is realized as its phase diagram has a confined and a deconfined phase that depends on the value of the coupling constant, i.e. on $β$. Herein, the connection between confinement and positivity violation through the Schwinger function associated with the Landau gauge photon propagator is investigated. The simulations reported show a very clear link between the realization of confinement and positivity violation of the photon Schwinger function and, therefore, of the photon Källén-Lehmann sp…
We study the spatial correlator of the topological charge density operator in pure SU(3) gauge theory and in two flavor QCD. We show that the data for distances up to about 1 fm is consistent with a vacuum consisting of individual instantons and closely bound pairs. The percentage of paired objects is twice as large on the dynamical configurations than on the pure gauge ones, implying increased molecule formations due to fermionic interactions.
Supersymmetric gauge theories are an essential part of most theories beyond the standard model. In the present work we investigate the pure gauge sector of Super-QCD focusing on the bound states, i.e. mesonic gluinoballs, gluino-glueballs and pure glueballs. To improve chiral properties and to minimize breaking of supersymmetry at finite lattice spacing, we introduce a deformed Super-Yang-Mills lattice action. It contains a twist term, similar to the twisted-mass formulation of lattice QCD. We furthermore explore if the multigrid method (DD$α$AMG solver) applied to the gluinos (adjoint Majoran…
The topological susceptibility of the SU(3) pure gauge theory is calculated in the deconfined phase at temperatures up to $10T_c$. At such large temperatures the susceptibility is suppressed, topologically non-trivial configurations are extremely rare. Thus, direct lattice simulations are not feasible. The density of states (DoS) method is designed to simulate rare events, we present an application of the DoS method to the problem of high temperature topological susceptibility. We reconstruct the histogram of the charge sectors that one could have obtained in a naive importance sampling. Our f…
A deconstructed finite temperature gauge theory has the Euclidean time direction kept discrete and finite. The ultraviolet behavior is that of one dimension less than at zero temperature. One can add to the action a gauge invariant term dependent on Polyakov loops, without worrying about nonlocality. The deformation of {\" U}nsal and Yaffe is best analyzed in this framework. It is shown that turning it on causes a dramatic change in the Hilbert space on which the transfer matrix in the temperature direction acts. The undeformed Hilbert space is everywhere a gauge singlet while the deformed one…
We use the Yang-Mills gradient flow to study the mixing of CP-violating pure gauge operators in continuum QCD with special attention to Weinberg's d=6 purely gluonic operator. The gradient flow allows for a relatively clear derivation of the Wilson coefficients of the CP-violating effective Hamiltonian. This calculation is the first step towards a high-energy matching of matrix elements involving the CP-violating operators between the perturbative and lattice regimes.
The lattice Landau gauge photon propagator for the pure gauge theory is revisited using large lattices. For the confined case we show that it has an associated linearly growing potential, it has a mass gap, that is related to the presence of monopoles, and its spectral function violates positivity. In the deconfined phase, our simulations suggest that a free field theory is recovered in the thermodynamic limit.
Variational minimization of tensor network states enables the exploration of low energy states of lattice gauge theories. However, the exact numerical evaluation of high-dimensional tensor network states remains challenging in general. In [E. Zohar, J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. D 97, 034510 (2018)] it was shown how, by combining gauged Gaussian projected entangled pair states with a variational Monte Carlo procedure, it is possible to efficiently compute physical observables. In this paper we demonstrate how this approach can be used to investigate numerically the ground state of a lattice gauge th…
We present the scale-setting function and the equation of state of the pure SU(2) gauge theory using the gradient flow method. We propose a reference scale t0 for the SU(2) gauge theory satisfying $t^2\langle E \rangle|_{t=t_0} = 0.1$. This reference value is fixed by a natural scaling-down of the standard t0-scale for the SU(3) gauge theory based on the perturbative analyses. We also show the thermodynamic quantities as a function of $T/T_c$, which are derived by the energy-momentum tensor using the small flow time expansion of the gradient flow.
The ghost propagator in Landau gauge is studied at finite temperature below and above $T_c$ using lattice QCD simulations. For high temperatures, we find that the ghost propagator is enhanced, compared to the confined phase. The results suggest that the ghost propagator can be used to identify the phase transition, similarly to the gluon propagator case.
