We introduce the notion of dissipative periodic lattice as an optical lattice with periodically distributed dissipative sites and argue that it allows to engineer unconventional Bose-Einstein superfluids with the complex-valued order parameter. We consider two examples, the one-dimensional dissipative optical lattice, where each third site is dissipative, and the dissipative honeycomb optical lattice, where each dissipative lattice site neighbors three non-dissipated sites. The tight-binding approximation is employed, which allows one to obtain analytical results. In the one-dimensional case the condensate is driven to a coherent Bloch-like state with non-zero quasimomentum, which breaks the translational periodicity of the dissipative lattice. In the two-dimensional case the condensate is driven to a zero quasimomentum Bloch-like state, which is a coherent superposition of four-site discrete vortices of alternating vorticity with the vortex centers located at the dissipative sites.

We model the superfluid to Mott insulator transition for a Bose gas on a lattice with two inequivalent sublattices. Using the Gutzwiller ansatz, we produce phase diagrams and provide an understanding of the interplay between superfluidity on each sublattice. We explore how the Mott lobes split, and describe the experimental signatures.
Recent experimental progress in magnetic atoms and polar molecules has created the prospect of simulating dipolar Hubbard models with off-site interactions. When applied to real-space cylindrical optical lattices, these anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions acquire a tunable spatially-dependent component while they remain translationally-invariant in the axial direction, creating a sublattice structure in the azimuthal direction. We numerically study how the coexistence of these classes of interactions affects the ground state of hardcore dipolar bosons at half-filling in a finite-size cylind…
In an ideal Bose gas that is driven into a steady state far from thermal equilibrium, a generalized form of Bose condensation can occur. Namely, the single-particle states unambiguously separate into two groups: the group of Bose-selected states, whose occupations increase linearly with the total particle number, and the group of all other states whose occupations saturate [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240405 (2013)]. However, so far very little is known about how the number of Bose-selected states depends on the properties of the system and its coupling to the environment. The answer to this questio…

We report an experimental study of dynamics of the metastable $^3P_2$ state of bosonic ytterbium atoms in an optical lattice. The dissipative Bose-Hubbard system with on-site two-body atom loss is realized via its intrinsic strong inelastic collision of the metastable $^3P_2$ atoms. We investigate the atom loss behavior with the unit-filling Mott insulator as the initial state and find that the atom loss is suppressed by the strong correlation between atoms. Also, as we decrease the potential depth of the lattice, we observe the growth of the phase coherence and find its suppression owing to t…
Using a field-theoretic approach within the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we study a Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a driving field and dissipation due to one-body losses. We recover the bistability diagram from the Gross-Pitaevski equation and analyze the different phases with respect to their elementary excitations and correlations. We find the low-density solution to be subdivided into a dynamically instable, a gapped, and a gapless regime. The correlations decay exponentially, but a substantial increase of correlation length marks the regime of gapless excitations.
The synchronization of coherent states of light has long been an important subject of basic research and technology. Recently, a new concept for analog computers has emerged where this synchronization process can be exploited to solve computationally hard problems - potentially faster and more energy-efficient than what can be achieved with conventional computer technology today. The unit cell of such systems consists of two coherent centers that are coupled to one another in a controlled manner. Here, we experimentally characterize and analyze the synchronization process of two photon Bose-Ei…
A method is presented for the systematic derivation of a hierarchy of coupled equations for the computation of two-time correlation functions of operators for open many-body quantum systems. We show how these systems of equations can be closed in mean-field and beyond approximations. Results for the specific example of the spectral weight functions are discussed. Our method allows one to access the full temporal evolution, not just the stationary solution, of non-equilibrium open quantum problems described by a Markovian master equation.
Coherence is a defining feature of quantum condensates. These condensates are inherently multimode phenomena and in the macroscopic limit it becomes extremely difficult to resolve populations of individual modes and the coherence between them. In this work we demonstrate non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of photons in a sculpted dye-filled microcavity, where threshold is found for $8\pm 2$ photons. With this nanocondensate we are able to measure occupancies and coherences of individual energy levels of the bosonic field. Coherence of individual modes generally increases with inc…
Dissipation is ubiquitous in nature and plays a crucial role in quantum systems such as causing decoherence of quantum states. Recently, much attention has been paid to an intriguing possibility of dissipation as an efficient tool for preparation and manipulation of quantum states. Here we report the realization of successful demonstration of a novel role of dissipation in a quantum phase transition using cold atoms. We realize an engineered dissipative Bose-Hubbard system by introducing a controllable strength of two-body inelastic collision via photo-association for ultracold bosons in a thr…
Modern experimental platforms such as supercoducting-circuit arrays call for the exploration of bosonic tight-binding models in unconventional situations with no counterpart in real materials. Here we investigate one of such situations, in which excitations are driven and damped by pairs, leading to pattern formation and exotic bosonic states emerged from a non-equilibrium quantum many-body system. Focusing on a two-dimensional driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model, we find that its steady states are characterized by the condensation of bosons around momenta lying on a "Bose surface", a bosoni…
We unravel the nonequilibrium correlated quantum quench dynamics of an impurity traveling through a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimension. For weak repulsive interspecies interactions the impurity oscillates within the bosonic gas. At strong repulsions and depending on its prequench position the impurity moves towards an edge of the bosonic medium and subsequently equilibrates. This equilibration being present independently of the initial velocity, the position and the mass of the impurity is inherently related to the generation of entanglement in the many-body system…
The many-body dissipative flow induced by a mobile aussian impurity harmonically oscillating within a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. For very {small and large driving frequencies} the superfluid phase is preserved. Dissipation is identified, for intermediate driving frequencies, by the non-zero value of the drag force whose abrupt increase {signals the spontaneous downstream emission of an array of gray solitons. After each emission event, typically each of the solitary waves formed decays and splits into two daughter gray solitary waves that are found to be robust prop…
We experimentally realize a method to produce non-equilibrium Bose Einstein condensates with condensed fraction exceeding those of equilibrium samples with the same parameters. To do this, we immerse an ultracold Bose gas of 87Rb in a cloud of 39K with substantially higher temperatures, providing a controlled source of dissipation. By combining the action of the dissipative environment with evaporative cooling, we are able to progressively distil the non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate from the thermal cloud. We show that by increasing the strength of the dissipation it is even possible t…
Supersolids are characterized by the counter-intuitive coexistence of superfluid and crystalline order. Here we study a supersolid phase emerging in the steady state of a driven-dissipative system. We consider a transversely pumped Bose-Einstein condensate trapped along the axis of a ring cavity and coherently coupled to a pair of degenerate counter-propagating cavity modes. Above a threshold pump strength the interference of photons scattered into the two cavity modes results in an emergent superradiant lattice, which spontaneously breaks the continuous translational symmetry towards a period…
We study a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in presence of two-particle losses and an incoherent single-particle drive on each lattice site, leading to a finite-density stationary state. Using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and an impurity solver based on exact diagonalization of the associated Lindbladian, we investigate the regime of strong two-particle losses. Here, a stationary-state quantum Zeno effect emerges, as can be seen in the on-site occupation and spectral function. We show that DMFT captures this effect through its self-consistent bath. We show that, in the deep Zeno reg…
