We report theoretical and experimental investigations of the flow instability responsible for the mushy-layer mode of convection and the formation of chimneys, drainage channels devoid of solid, during steady-state solidification of aqueous ammonium chloride. Under certain growth conditions a state of steady mushy-layer growth with no flow is unstable to the onset of convection, resulting in the formation of chimneys. We present regime diagrams to quantify the state of the flow as a function of the initial liquid concentration, the porous-medium Rayleigh number, and the sample width. For a given liquid concentration, increasing both the porous-medium Rayleigh number and the sample width caused the system to change from a stable state of no flow to a different state with the formation of chimneys. Decreasing the concentration ratio destabilized the system and promoted the formation of chimneys. As the initial liquid concentration increased, onset of convection and formation of chimneys occurred at larger values of the porous-medium Rayleigh number, but the critical cell widths for chimney formation are far less sensitive to the liquid concentration. At the highest liquid concentration, the mushy-layer mode of convection did not occur in the experiment. The formation of multiple chimneys and the morphological transitions between these states are discussed. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of a previous theoretical analysis of finite amplitude convection with chimneys, with a single value of the mushy-layer permeability consistent with the liquid concentrations considered in this study.
Motivated by the mushy zones of sea ice, volcanoes, and icy moons of the outer solar system, we perform a theoretical and numerical study of boundary-layer convection along a vertical heated wall in a bounded ideal mushy region. The mush is comprised of a porous and reactive binary alloy with a mixture of saline liquid in a solid matrix, and is studied in the near-eutectic approximation. Here we demonstrate the existence of four regions and study their behavior asymptotically. Starting from the bottom of the wall, the four regions are (i) an isotropic corner region; (ii) a buoyancy dominated v…
In this fluid dyanmics video, we show experimental images and simulations of chimney formation in mushy layers. A directional solidification apparatus was used to freeze 25 wt % aqueous ammonium chloride solutions at controlled rates in a narrow Hele-Shaw cell (1mm gap). The convective motion is imaged with schlieren. We demonstrate the ability to numerically simulate mushy layer growth for direct comparison with experiments.
We model buoyancy-driven convection with chimneys -- channels of zero solid fraction -- in a mushy layer formed during directional solidification of a binary alloy in two-dimensions. A large suite of numerical simulations is combined with scaling analysis in order to study the parametric dependence of the flow. Stability boundaries are calculated for states of finite-amplitude convection with chimneys, which for a narrow domain can be interpreted in terms of a modified Rayleigh number criterion based on the domain width and mushy-layer permeability. For solidification in a wide domain with mul…
This article presents a study of the influence of electromagnetically (EM) forced convection on segregation formation. As a reference case the solidification of Sn-5 wt pct Pb alloy from the Hebditch and Hunt experiment is taken. Applied forcing of convective flow is determined by the dimensionless electromagnetic forcing parameter $F$. The study was carried out in the range $-3.5\times 10^6<F<3.5\times 10^6$. Velocity profiles and flow patterns in the liquid phase are obtained for different applied EM forcing conditions. As a result of parametric analysis, the dependence of the Reynolds numbe…
We take a numerical approach to analyze the mechanisms controlling the spacing of chimneys -- channels devoid of solid -- in two-dimensional mushy layers formed by solidifying a binary alloy. Chimneys are the principal conduits through which buoyancy effects transport material out of the mushy layer and into the liquid from which it formed. Experiments show a coarsening of chimney spacing and we pursue the hypothesis that this observation is a consequence of a variational principle: the chimney spacing adjusts to optimize material transport and hence maximize the rate of removal of potential e…
Thermal convection in fluid layers heated from below are usually realized experimentally as well as treated theoretically with fixed boundaries on which conditions for the temperature and the velocity field are prescribed. The thermal and velocity boundary layers attached to the upper and lower boundaries determine to a large extent the properties of turbulent convection at high Rayleigh numbers. Fixed boundaries are often absent in natural realizations of thermal convection. This paper studies the properties of convection driven by a planar heat source below a cooling source of equal size imm…
Thermal convection in a horizontal layer with uniform internal heating and stress-free constant-temperature boundaries is analyzed numerically. The work is motivated by the questions arising in development of liquid metal batteries, in which convection is induced by the Joule heating of electrolyte. It is demonstrated that three-dimensional convection cells exist at subcritical Rayleigh numbers.
We present a numerical study of convection in a horizontal layer comprising a fluid-saturated porous bed overlain by an unconfined fluid layer. Convection is driven by a vertical, destabilising temperature difference applied across the whole system, as in the canonical Rayleigh-Bénard problem. Numerical simulations are carried out using a single-domain formulation of the two-layer problem based on the Darcy-Brinkman equations. We explore the dynamics and heat flux through the system in the limit of large Rayleigh number, but small Darcy number, such that the flow exhibits vigorous convection i…
We present a fluid dynamics video which illustrates the dynamics of the velocity field in the boundary layer in a turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection flow. The data are obtained from direct numerical simulation.
In a range of physical systems, the first instability in Rayleigh-Bernard convection between nearly thermally insulating horizontal plates is large scale. This holds for thermal convection of fluids saturating porous media. Large-scale thermal convection in a horizontal layer is governed by remarkably similar equations both in the presence of a porous matrix and without it, with only one additional term for the latter case, which, however, vanishes under certain conditions (e.g., two-dimensional flows or infinite Prandtl number). We provide a rigorous derivation of long-wavelength equations fo…
A numerical method is presented which conveniently computes upper bounds on heat transport and poloidal energy in plane layer convection for infinite and finite Prandtl numbers. The bounds obtained for the heat transport coincide with earlier results. These bounds imply upper bounds for the poloidal energy which follow directly from the definitions of dissipation and energy. The same constraints used for computing upper bounds on the heat transport lead to improved bounds for the poloidal energy.
For longer than one decade, liquid metal batteries (LMBs) are developed with the primary aim to provide economic stationary energy storage. Featuring two liquid metal electrodes separated by a molten salt electrolyte, LMBs operate at elevated temperature as simple concentration cells. Therefore, efficient mass transfer is a basic prerequisite for their economic operation. Understanding these mechanisms cannot be limited at the single layer level. With this motivation, the effects of solutal- and thermally-driven flow are studied, as well as the flow coupling between the three liquid layers of …
We study the velocity field in a horizontal (x-y) plane 1.5 mm above the hot plate in turbulent natural convection using PIV at a Rayleigh number Raw=106 and Prandtl number Pr=5.2. The plane of measurement is inside the velocity boundary layer estimated from the natural convection boundary layer equations[7] as well as inside the velocity boundary layer due to the large scale flow[2, 5].The boundary layer comprises of line plumes with sinking fluid between them. The instantaneous velocity variation from the center of the sinking fluid to the line plumes is found to deviate with the classical P…
Ortiz-Pérez and Dávalos investigated the stability of parallel convective flow. From the article it seems that this equations of flow obtained by the authors. Meanwhile, it is well studied theoretically and experimentally(exact solution obtained more than half a century ago.
The combined effects of buoyancy-driven Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RC) and surface tension-driven Marangoni convection (MC) are studied in a triple-layer configuration which serves as a simplified model for a liquid metal battery (LMB). The three-layer model consists of a liquid metal alloy cathode, a molten salt separation layer, and a liquid metal anode at the top. Convection is triggered by the temperature gradient between the hot electrolyte and the colder electrodes, which is a consequence of the release of resistive heat during operation. We present a linear stability analysis of the st…
Boundary layers play an important role in controlling convective heat transfer. Their nature varies considerably between different application areas characterized by different boundary conditions, which hampers a uniform treatment. Here, we argue that, independent from boundary conditions, systematic dissipation measurements in Rayleigh-Bénard convection capture the relevant near-wall structures. By means of direct numerical simulations with varying Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate that such dissipation layers share central characteristics with classical boundary layers, but, in contrast to the…
The boundary layer flow in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell of rectangular shape has been visualized in this fluid dynamics video. The experiment has been undertaken in air at a Rayleigh number $Ra=1.3\times 10^{10}$ and a Prandtl number $Pr=0.7$. Various sequences captured at selected positions of the heating plate show that the boundary layer is a very transient flow region characterized by coherent structures that permanently evolve. It becomes fully turbulent in the areas where the large-scale circulation impinge or leave the bottom plate.
Turbulent convection plays a crucial role in many natural environments, ranging from Earth ocean, mantle and outer core, to various astrophysical systems. For such flows with extremely strong thermal driving, an ultimate scaling was proposed for the heat flux and velocity. Despite numerous experimental and numerical studies, a conclusive observation of the ultimate regime has not been reached yet. Here we show that the ultimate scaling can be perfectly realized once the thermal boundary layer is fully decoupled from the viscous boundary layer and locates inside the turbulent bulk. The heat flu…
The structure of the boundary layers in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We consider convection in a cylindrical cell at an aspect ratio one for Rayleigh numbers of Ra=3e+9 and 3e+10 at fixed Prandtl number Pr=0.7. Similar to the experimental results in the same setup and for the same Prandtl number, the structure of the laminar boundary layers of the velocity and temperature fields is found to deviate from the prediction of the Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen theory. Deviations decrease when a dynamical rescaling of the dat…
We report a new thermal boundary layer equation for turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Prandtl number Pr>1 that takes into account the effect of turbulent fluctuations. These fluctuations are neglected in existing equations, which are based on steady-state and laminar assumptions. Using this new equation, we derive analytically the mean temperature profiles in two limits: (a) Pr>1, Pr~1 and (b) Pr>>1. These two theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of our direct numerical simulations for Pr=4.38 (water) and Pr=2547.9 (glycerol) respectively.
The shape of velocity and temperature profiles near the horizontal conducting plates in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are studied numerically and experimentally over the Rayleigh number range $10^8\lesssim Ra\lesssim3\times10^{11}$ and the Prandtl number range $0.7\lesssim Pr\lesssim5.4$. The results show that both the temperature and velocity profiles well agree with the classical Prandtl-Blasius laminar boundary-layer profiles, if they are re-sampled in the respective dynamical reference frames that fluctuate with the instantaneous thermal and velocity boundary-layer thicknesses.
The spontaneous convective patterns induced by evaporation of a pure liquid layer are studied experimentally. A volatile liquid layer placed in a cylindrical container is left free to evaporate into air at rest under ambient conditions. The liquid/gas interface of the evaporating liquid layer is visualized using an infrared (IR) camera. The phenomenology of the observed convective patterns is qualitatively analysed, showing in particular that the latter can be quite complex especially at moderate liquid thicknesses. Attention is also paid to the influence of the container diameter on the obser…
We report here some intriguing properties of fingering double diffusive convection turbulence, i.e. convection flow driven simultaneously by an unstable salinity gradient and a stable temperature gradient. Multiple equilibria can be established in such flow for the same control parameters, either by setting different initial scalar distribution or different evolution history. Transition between a single finger layer and multi-layer staircase can be abrupt and hysteresis. Unlike a deep finger layer, a model widely used in literature, finger interfaces within staircases show totally different tr…
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh--Bénard convection of fluids with low ($Pr=0.1$) and high ($Pr=5$) Prandtl numbers in a horizontally periodic layer with no-slip top and bottom boundaries. At both Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate the presence of an upscale transfer of kinetic energy that leads to the development of domain-filling vortical structures. Sufficiently strong buoyant forcing and rotation foster the quasi-two-dimensional turbulent state of the flow, despite the formation of plume-like vertical disturbances promoted by so-called Ekman pumping from the viscou…
When particles settle through a stable temperature or salinity gradient they can drive an instability known as sedimentary fingering convection. This phenomenon is thought to occur beneath sediment-rich river plumes in lakes and oceans, in the context of marine snow where decaying organic materials serve as the suspended particles, or in the atmosphere in the presence of aerosols or volcanic ash. Laboratory experiments of Houk and Green (1973) and Green (1987) have shown sedimentary fingering convection to be similar to the more commonly known thermohaline fingering convection in many ways. He…
The mechanisms governing the transition to turbulence in natural convection boundary layers along strongly heated vertical walls remain neither very clear nor well understood, because of the lack of experiments and the difficulties of physical modelling. Our measurements bring experimental data focusing on this transition in quiescent air along radiating and conducting plates in the whole range of 2000 to 8000 W/m\^2 heating rate. The analysis of the time series obtained by sliding window cross-correlation thermoanemometry leads us to point out coherent turbulent structures on short heights th…
We derive scaling relations for the thermal dissipation rate in the bulk and in the boundary layers for moderate and large Prandtl number (Pr) convection. Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection, we show that the thermal dissipation in the bulk is suppressed compared to passive scalar dissipation. The suppression is stronger for large Pr. We further show that the dissipation in the boundary layers dominates that in the bulk for both moderate and large Pr. The probability distribution functions of thermal dissipation rate, both in the bulk and in the boundary layers, ar…
Results on the Prandtl-Blasius type kinetic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a broad range of Prandtl numbers are presented. By solving the laminar Prandtl-Blasius boundary layer equations, we calculate the ratio of the thermal and kinetic boundary layer thicknesses, which depends on the Prandtl number Pr only. It is approximated as $0.588Pr^{-1/2}$ for $Pr\ll Pr^*$ and as $0.982 Pr^{-1/3}$ for $Pr^*\ll\Pr$, with $Pr^*= 0.046$. Comparison of the Prandtl--Blasius velocity boundary layer thickness with that evaluated in the direct numerical simula…
Gravity-driven convection of fluid at parameters near its thermodynamic critical point inside a porous layer heated from below (Rayleigh-Darcy convection) is studied. The fluid having the temperature slightly above the critical one is one-component. The hydrodynamic model describing a high compressible fluid phase at variable physical properties inside a solid matrix at a uniform porosity is analyzed. A near-critical fluid is assumed to be the van der Waals gas. In the limit of small variations in the density and thermodynamic coefficients where the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is applica…
We discuss two aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations in a unique setting; a closed cylindrical cell of aspect ratio of one. First, we present a comprehensive comparison of statistical quantities such as energy dissipation rates and boundary layer thickness scales. Data are used from three simulation run series at Prandtl numbers $Pr$ that cover two orders of magnitude. In contrast to most previous studies in RBC the focus of the present work is on convective turbulence at very low Prandtl numbers including $Pr=0.021$ …
Results from direct numerical simulations for three dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection in a cylindrical cell of aspect ratio 1/2 and Pr=0.7 are presented. They span five decades of Ra from $2\times 10^6$ to $2 \times10^{11}$. Good numerical resolution with grid spacing $\sim$ Kolmogorov scale turns out to be crucial to accurately calculate the Nusselt number, which is in good agreement with the experimental data by Niemela et al., Nature, 404, 837 (2000). In underresolved simulations the hot (cold) plumes travel further from the bottom (top) plate than in the fully resolved case, because t…
We report measurements of the instantaneous viscous boundary layer (BL) thickness $δ_v(t)$ in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. It is found that $δ_v(t)$ obtained from the measured instantaneous two-dimensional velocity field exhibits intermittent fluctuations. For small values, $δ_v(t)$ obeys a lognormal distribution, whereas for large values the distribution of $δ_v(t)$ exhibits an exponential tail. The variation of $δ_v(t)$ with time is found to be driven by the fluctuations of the large-scale mean flow velocity and the local horizontal velocities close to the plate can be used as an in…
Two-dimensional simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection at $Ra = 5\times10^{10}$ show that vertical logarithmic mean temperature profiles can be observed in regions of the boundary layer where thermal plumes are emitted. The profile is logarithmic only in these regions and not in the rest of the boundary layer where it is sheared by the large scale wind and impacted by plumes. In addition, the logarithmic behavior is not visible in the horizontal average. The findings reveal that the temperature profiles are strongly connected to thermal plume emission and support a perception that parts of …
The paper is devoted to the study of the formation of stratification in an incompressible fluid due to convective laminar flows in horizontal layers heated from the side. Medium and intensive modes of stationary laminar thermal, concentrational and thermo-concentrational (in particular thermohaline) convection are considered, in which nonlinear flow features are manifested, which can radically change the flow structure and the characteristics of heat and mass transfer. The solutions of the problems of laminar problems of convection show the features of the formation of layered structures, vert…
We compute fully local boundary layer scales in three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. These scales are directly connected to the highly intermittent fluctuations of the fluxes of momentum and heat at the isothermal top and bottom walls and are statistically distributed around the corresponding mean thickness scales. The local boundary layer scales also reflect the strong spatial inhomogeneities of both boundary layers due to the large-scale, but complex and intermittent, circulation that builds up in closed convection cells. Similar to turbulent boundary layers, we define inn…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the evaporation of liquid disks in the presence of natural convection due to a density difference between the vapor and the surrounding gas. From the analogy between thermal convection above a heated disk and our system, we derive scaling laws to describe the evaporation rate. The local evaporation rate depends on the presence of a boundary layer in the gas phase such that the total evaporation rate is given by a combination of different scaling contributions, which reflect the structure of the boundary layer. We compare our theoretical predictio…
We numerically investigate turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection within two immiscible fluid layers, aiming to understand how the layer thickness and fluid properties affect the heat transfer (characterized by the Nusselt number $Nu$) in two-layer systems. Both two- and three-dimensional simulations are performed at fixed global Rayleigh number $Ra=10^8$, Prandtl number $Pr=4.38$, and Weber number $We=5$. We vary the relative thickness of the upper layer between $0.01 \le α\le 0.99$ and the thermal conductivity coefficient ratio of the two liquids between $0.1 \le λ_k \le 10$. Two flow regimes …
A quantitative theory is developed for the vertical mean temperature profile (MTP) in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC), which explains the recent experimental and numerical observations of a logarithmic law by Ahlers et al.(Phys. Rev. Lett., 2012). A multi-layer model is formulated and quantified, whose predictions agree with DNS and experimental data for the Rayleigh-number (Ra) over seven decades. In particular, a thermal buffer layer follows a 1/7 scaling like the previously postulated mixing zone (Procaccia et al, Phys. Rev. A,1991), and yields a Ra-dependent log law constant. A …
The effect of the wind of Rayleigh-Benard convection on the boundary layers is studied by direct numerical simulation of an L/H=4 aspect-ratio domain with periodic side boundary conditions for Ra={10^5, 10^6, 10^7} and Pr=1. It is shown that the kinetic boundary layers on the top- and bottom plate have some features of both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. A continuous spectrum, as well as significant forcing due to Reynolds stresses indicates undoubtedly a turbulent character, whereas the classical integral boundary layer parameters -- the shape factor and friction factor (the latter is…
Numerical simulations of convection in a layer filled with ideal gas are presented. The control parameters are chosen such that there is a significant variation of density of the gas in going from the bottom to the top of the layer. The relations between the Rayleigh, Peclet and Nusselt numbers depend on the density stratification. It is proposed to use a data reduction which accounts for the variable density by introducing into the scaling laws an effective density. The relevant density is the geometric mean of the maximum and minimum densities in the layer. A good fit to the data is then obt…
Coupled mixed convective and stratified systems are common in natural flows. To study experimentally the associated dynamics, we use a singular property of water: its non-linear equation of state is characterised by a maximum density close to $4^{\circ}$C. By heating the top of a tank at $35^{\circ}$C and cooling the bottom at $0^{\circ}$C, a two-layer configuration spontaneously appears. The convective motion in the bottom layer consists mostly of a large-scale circulation and rising cold plumes. This turbulent flow generates propagating internal gravity waves in the upper stably-stratified l…
Statistical properties of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection at low Prandtl numbers (Pr), which are typical for liquid metals such as mercury, gallium or liquid sodium, are investigated in high-resolution three-dimensional spectral element simulations in a closed cylindrical cell with an aspect ratio of one and are compared to previous turbulent convection simulations in air. We compare the scaling of global momentum and heat transfer. The scaling exponents are found to be in agreement with experiments. Mean profiles of the root-mean-square velocity as well as the thermal and kinetic energy …
In the above paper the author treats the boundary layer flow along a vertical flat plate, immersed in a Darcy Brinkman Forchheimer porous medium. The porosity and the permeability of the porous medium are variable across the boundary layer. In addition a magnetic field with constant strength is applied normal to the plate. The fluid temperature at the plate is constant and different from that of the ambient fluid. This temperature difference creates a buoyancy force and the flow is characterized as mixed convection. The partial differential equations of the boundary layer flow are transformed …
The convection velocity ($U_C$) of turbulent structures has been studied in adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) for a wide range of Reynolds numbers $Re_τ= 1400 - 4000$. The study is based on estimation of the convection velocity using decomposed streamwise skewness factor introduced in (Drozdz A., Elsner W., Int. J. of Heat and Fluid Flow. 63 (2017) 67\-74) and verified by means of two-point correlation method. It was shown that in the overlapping region of APG flows, the convection velocity profiles (when scaled in viscous units) reassemble the universal logarith…
Effect of interfacial disturbances on instabilities of buoyant/thermocapillary convective flows in rectangular cavities is studied in a series of numerical experiments. The computations are carried out for several two-liquid two-layer systems taking into account properties of liquids used in previously published experiments. Relation between the interface deformations and the Boussinesq approximation is discussed. It is shown that in some systems, including the interface disturbances in the model can alter the critical temperature difference by approximately 10%, producing either destabilizing…
Using direct numerical simulations of turbulent thermal convection for Rayleigh number ($\mathrm{Ra}$) between $10^6$ and $10^8$ and unit Prandtl number, we derive scaling relations for viscous dissipation in the bulk and in the boundary layers. We show that contrary to the general belief, the total viscous dissipation in the bulk is larger, albeit marginally, than that in the boundary layers. The bulk dissipation rate is similar to that in hydrodynamic turbulence with log-normal distribution, but it differs from $(U^3/d)$ by a factor of $\mathrm{Ra}^{-0.18}$. Viscous dissipation in the bounda…
We study the structure of the thermal boundary layer (BL) in Rayleigh-Bénard convection for Prandtl number ($Pr$) 0.021 by conducting direct numerical simulations in a two-dimensional square box for Rayleigh numbers ($Ra$) up to $10^9$. The large-scale circulation in the flow divides the horizontal plates into three distinct regions, and we observe that the local thermal BL thicknesses in the plume-ejection region are larger than those in the plume-impact and shear-dominated regions. Moreover, the local BL width decreases as $Ra^{-β(x)}$, with $β(x)$ depending on the position at the plate. We …
A sequence of two and three-dimensional simulations is conducted for the double diffusive convection (DDC) flows in the diffusive regime subjected to an imposed shear. The flow is confined between two horizontal plates which are maintained at different constant temperature, salinity, and different velocity, thus setting up a shear across the flow. The lower plate is fixed at higher temperature and salinity, while the overall (unperturbed) density gradient is statically stable. For a wide range of control parameters, and for sufficiently strong perturbation of the conductive initial state, we f…
We study the evolution of a melting front between the solid and liquid phases of a pure incompressible material where fluid motions are driven by unstable temperature gradients. In a plane layer geometry, this can be seen as classical Rayleigh-Bénard convection where the upper solid boundary is allowed to melt due to the heat flux brought by the fluid underneath. This free-boundary problem is studied numerically in two dimensions using a phase-field approach, classically used to study the melting and solidification of alloys, which we dynamically couple with the Navier-Stokes equations in the …
