The mechanisms governing the transition to turbulence in natural convection boundary layers along strongly heated vertical walls remain neither very clear nor well understood, because of the lack of experiments and the difficulties of physical modelling. Our measurements bring experimental data focusing on this transition in quiescent air along radiating and conducting plates in the whole range of 2000 to 8000 W/m\^2 heating rate. The analysis of the time series obtained by sliding window cross-correlation thermoanemometry leads us to point out coherent turbulent structures on short heights throughout the thin boundary layer, which seem to be governed by heat transfer and time-microscales of turbulence through the inner sublayer. Physical interpretations are given to relate to the observed heat transfer correlation and these turbulence transition structures along with radiation and conduction.
Thermal convection in a horizontal layer with uniform internal heating and stress-free constant-temperature boundaries is analyzed numerically. The work is motivated by the questions arising in development of liquid metal batteries, in which convection is induced by the Joule heating of electrolyte. It is demonstrated that three-dimensional convection cells exist at subcritical Rayleigh numbers.
I consider a dielectric fluid heated from above and subjected to an electric potential difference between its top and bottom. I show that for a suitably chosen electric potential difference, the layer of fluid can become unstable. For the case of a strongly polar fluid like pure water, an electric potential difference of a few hundreds of volts can trigger convection. Although the analysis in this paper cannot explain the phenomenon described in [Gross & Porter(1966)], it could be because of unavailability of accurate physical parameters of the fluid used in the experiment.
We offer a unifying theory for turbulent purely internally heated convection, generalizing the unifying theories of Grossmann and Lohse (2000, 2001) for Rayleigh--Bénard turbulence and of Shishkina, Grossmann and Lohse (2016) for turbulent horizontal convection, which are both based on the splitting of the kinetic and thermal dissipation rates in respective boundary and bulk contributions. We obtain the mean temperature of the system and the Reynolds number (which are the response parameters) as function of the control parameters, namely the internal thermal driving strength (called, when nond…
Oscillatory instability of buoyancy convection in a laterally heated cube with perfectly thermally conducting horizontal boundaries is studied. The effect of the spanwise boundaries on the oscillatory instability onset is studied. The problem is treated by Krylov-subspace-iteration based Newton and Arnoldi methods. The Krylov basis vectors are calculated by a novel approach that involves the SIMPLE iteration and a projection onto a space of functions satisfying all linearized and homogeneous boundary conditions. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 1003 to 2563 finite volumes. A se…
Convection of an internally heated fluid, confined between top and bottom plates of equal temperature, is studied by direct numerical simulation in two and three dimensions. The unstably stratified upper region drives convection that penetrates into the stably stratified lower region. The fraction of produced heat escaping across the bottom plate, which is one half without convection, initially decreases as convection strengthens. Entering the turbulent regime, this decrease reverses in two dimensions but continues monotonically in three dimensions. The mean fluid temperature, which grows prop…
The analytical solution of heated laminar vertical jet in a liquid with power-law temperature dependence of density was obtained in the skin-layer approximation for certain values of Prandtl number. Cases of point and linear sources were considered.
Motivated by the mushy zones of sea ice, volcanoes, and icy moons of the outer solar system, we perform a theoretical and numerical study of boundary-layer convection along a vertical heated wall in a bounded ideal mushy region. The mush is comprised of a porous and reactive binary alloy with a mixture of saline liquid in a solid matrix, and is studied in the near-eutectic approximation. Here we demonstrate the existence of four regions and study their behavior asymptotically. Starting from the bottom of the wall, the four regions are (i) an isotropic corner region; (ii) a buoyancy dominated v…
Transition from steady to oscillatory buoyancy convection of air in a laterally heated cubic box is studied numerically by straight-forward time integration of Boussinesq equations using a series of gradually refined finite volume grids. Horizontal and spanwise cube boundaries are assumed to be either perfectly thermally conducting or perfectly thermally insulated, which results in four different sets of thermal boundary conditions. Critical Grashof numbers are obtained by interpolation of numerically extracted growth/decay rates of oscillations amplitude to zero. Slightly supercritical flow r…
In the above paper the author treats the boundary layer flow along a vertical flat plate, immersed in a Darcy Brinkman Forchheimer porous medium. The porosity and the permeability of the porous medium are variable across the boundary layer. In addition a magnetic field with constant strength is applied normal to the plate. The fluid temperature at the plate is constant and different from that of the ambient fluid. This temperature difference creates a buoyancy force and the flow is characterized as mixed convection. The partial differential equations of the boundary layer flow are transformed …
A sequence of three steady - oscillatory transitions of buoyancy convection of air in a laterally heated cube with perfectly thermally insulated horizontal and spanwise boundaries is studied. The problem is treated by Newton and Arnoldi methods based on Krylov subspace iteration. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 100^3 to 256^3 finite volumes. It is shown that the primary instability is characterized by two competing eigenmodes, whose temporal development results in two different oscillatory states that differ by their symmetries. Bifurcations due to both modes are subcritical. …
Heat transport in turbulent thermal convection increases with the thermal forcing, but in almost all studies the rate of this increase is slower than it would be if transport became independent of the molecular diffusivities -- the heat transport scaling is slower than the mixing-length (or `ultimate') scaling. In configurations driven by either thermal boundary conditions or internal heating, thermal boundary layers instead lead to a boundary-limited (or `classical') scaling. With net-zero internal heating and cooling in different regions, mixing-length scaling can occur because heat need not…
A water-filled differentially heated rotating annulus with initially prepared stable vertical salinity profiles is studied in the laboratory. Based on two-dimensional horizontal particle image velocimetry (PIV) data, and infrared camera visualizations, we describe the appearance and the characteristics of the baroclinic instability in this original configuration. First, we show that when the salinity profile is linear and confined between two non stratified layers at top and bottom, only two separate shallow fluid layers can be destabilized. These unstable layers appear nearby the top and the …
Direct numerical simulations are performed to study turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a vertical cylindrical cavity with uniform axial magnetic field. Flows at high Hartmann and Rayleigh numbers are considered. The calculations reveal that, similarly to the behavior observed in Rayleigh-Bénard convection with strong rotation, flows at strong magnetic field develop a central vortex, while the heat transfer is suppressed.
A theoretical study is presented in this paper to investigate the conjugate heat transfer across a vertical finite wall separating two forced and free convection flows at different temperatures. The heat conduction in the wall is in the transversal direction and countercurrent boundary layers are formed on the both sides of the wall. The governing equations of this problem and their corresponding boundary conditions are all cast into a dimensionless form by using a non-similarity transformation. These resultant equations with multiple singular points are solved numerically using a very efficie…
Results from direct numerical simulations of vertical natural convection at Rayleigh numbers $1.0\times 10^5$-$1.0\times 10^9$ and Prandtl number $0.709$ support a generalised applicability of the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) theory, which was originally developed for horizontal natural (Rayleigh-B{é}nard) convection. In accordance with the GL theory, it is shown that the boundary-layer thicknesses of the velocity and temperature fields in vertical natural convection obey laminar-like Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen scaling. Specifically, the normalised mean boundary-layer thicknesses scale with the $-1/2$…
Recent planetary data and geophysical modelling suggest that hydrothermal activity is ongoing under the ice crust of Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. According to these models, hydrothermal flow in the porous, rocky core of the satellite is driven by tidal deformation that induces dissipation and volumetric internal heating. Despite the effort in the modelling of Enceladus' interior, systematic understanding---and even basic scaling laws---of internally-heated porous convection and hydrothermal activity are still lacking. In this article, using an idealised model of an internally-heated porou…
We report velocity measurements in a vertical turbulent convection flow cell that is filled with the eutectic liquid metal alloy gallium-indium-tin by the use of local Lorentz force velocimetry (LLFV) and ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV). We demonstrate the applicability of LLFV for a thermal convection flow and reproduce a linear dependence of the measured force in the range of micronewtons on the local flow velocity magnitude. Furthermore, the presented experiment is used to explore scaling laws of the global turbulent transport of heat and momentum in this low-Prandtl-number convection …
From Sheared Annular Centrifugal Rayleigh-Bénard Convection to Radially Heated Taylor-Couette Flow: Exploring the Impact of Buoyancy and Shear on Heat Transfer and Flow Structure
This work reviews basic features of both Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection and internally heated (IH) convection, along with findings on IH convection from laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In the first chapter, six canonical models of convection are described: three configurations of IH convection driven by constant and uniform volumetric heating, and three configurations of RB convection driven by the boundary conditions. The IH models are distinguished by differing pairs of thermal boundary conditions: top and bottom boundaries of equal temperature, an insulating bottom with h…
The paper presents a theoretical study using the Karman-Pohlhausen method for describing the transient heat exchange between the boundary-layer free convection and a vertical flat plate embedded in a porous medium. The unsteady behavior is developed after the generation of an impulsive heat flux step at the right-hand side of the plate. Two cases are considered according to whether the plate has a finite thickness or no thickness. The time and space evolution of the interface temperature is evidenced.
An experimental and numerical smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) analysis was performed for the convective flow arising from a horizontal, thin cylindrical heat source enclosed in a glycerin-filled, slender enclosure at low Rayleigh numbers ($1.18\leq {\rm Ra}\leq 242$). Both the experiments and the SPH calculations were performed for positive ($0.1\leqΔT\leq 10$ K) and negative ($-10\leqΔT\leq -0.1$ K) temperature differences between the source and the surrounding fluid. In all cases a pair of steady, counter-rotating vortices is formed, accompanied by a plume of vertically ascending flow …
In the above paper the authors treat the boundary layer flow along a stationary, vertical, permeable, flat plate within a vertical free stream. Fluid is sucked or injected through the vertical plate. The fluid species concentration at the plate is constant and different from that of the ambient fluid. It is also assumed that the plate is heated by convection from another fluid with constant temperature with a constant heat transfer coefficient. The temperature and species concentration difference between the plate and the ambient fluid creates buoyancy forces and the flow is characterized as m…
We use direct numerical simulation (DNS) to explore the effect of tilt on two-dimensional turbulent thermal convection on a half-soap bubble that is heated at its equator. In the DNS, the bubble is tilted by an angle $δ\in[0^{\circ},90^{\circ}]$, the Rayleigh number is varied between $Ra\in[3\times10^6, 3\times10^9]$, and the Prandlt number is fixed at $Pr=7$.The DNS reveals two qualitatively different flow regimes: the dynamic plume regime (DPR) and the stable plume regime (SPR).In the DPR, small dynamic plumes constantly emerge from random locations on the equator and dissipate on the bubble.…
Comment on Similarity analysis in magnetohydrodynamics:effects of Hall and ion-slip currents on free convection flow and mass transfer of a gas past a semi-infinite vertical plate, A.A. Megahed, S.R. Komy, A.A. Afify [Acta Mechanica 151, 185-194 (2001)] In the above paper is investigated the boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid over a vertical, stationary plate placed in a calm fluid. The effects of Hall and ion-slip currents are taken into account. The boundary layer equations are transformed into ordinary ones using a scaling group of transformations and subsequently are s…
Laboratory experiments were conducted to study heat transport characteristics in a nonhomogeneously heated fluid annulus subjected to rotation along the vertical axis (z). The nonhomogeneous heating was obtained by imposing radial and vertical temperature gradient (ΔT). The parameter range for this study was Rayleigh number, Ra=2.43x10^8-3.66x10^8, and Taylor number, Ta=6.45x10^8-27x10^8. The working fluid was water with a Prandtl number, Pr=7. Heat transport was measured for varying rotation rates (Ω) for fixed values of ΔT. The Nusselt number, Nu, plotted as a function of Ta distinctly showe…
The problem of forced convection along an isothermal moving plate is a classical problem of fluid mechanics that has been solved for the first time in 1961 by Sakiadis (1961). It appears that the first work concerning mixed convection along a moving plate is that of Moutsoglou and Chen (1980). Thereafter, many solutions have been obtained for different aspects of this class of boundary layer problems. In the previous works the fluid properties have been assumed constant. Ali (2006) in a recent paper treated, for the first time, the mixed convection problem with variable viscosity. He used the …
The effect of a homogeneous magnetic field on surface-tension-driven Bénard convection is studied by means of direct numerical simulations. The flow is computed in a rectangular domain with periodic horizontal boundary conditions and the free-slip condition on the bottom wall using a pseudospectral Fourier-Chebyshev discretization. Deformations of the free surface are neglected. Two- and three-dimensional flows are computed for either vanishing or small Prandtl number, which are typical of liquid metals. The main focus of the paper is on a qualitative comparison of the flow states with the non…
A comprehensive study of the problem of laminar film condensation with both a gravitational type body force and a moving vapour concurrent and parallel to the surface has been presented here. It demonstrates where both the body force and vapour velocity are significant through a comprehensive numerical solution obtained by a modified Keller box method. Important parameters governing condensation and heat transfer of pure vapour are determined. A perturbation analysis is applied in the leading edge and downstream regimes. The thin film approximations for the both regimes are obtained and compar…
The model under consideration is based on approximate analytical solution of two dimensional stationary Navier-Stokes and Fourier-Kirchhoff equations. Approximations are based on the typical for natural convection assumptions: the fluid noncompressibility and Bousinesq approximation. We also assume that ortogonal to the plate component (x) of velocity is neglectible small. The solution of the boundary problem is represented as a Taylor Series in $x$ coordinate for velocity and temperature which introduces functions of vertical coordinate (y), as coefficients of the expansion. The correspondent…
Convection over a wavy heated bottom wall in the air flow has been studied in experiments with the Rayleigh number $\sim 10^8$. It is shown that the mean temperature gradient in the flow core inside a large-scale circulation is directed upward, that corresponds to the stably stratified flow. In the experiments with a wavy heated bottom wall, we detect large-scale standing internal gravity waves excited in the regions with the stably stratified flow. The wavelength and the period of these waves are much larger than the turbulent spatial and time scales, respectively. In particular, the frequenc…
The downward flow in a vertical duct with one heated and three thermally insulated walls is analyzed numerically using the two-dimensional approximation valid in the asymptotic limit of an imposed strong transverse magnetic field. The work is motivated by the design of liquid metal blankets with poloidal ducts for future nuclear fusion reactors, in which the main component of the magnetic field is perpendicular to the flow direction and very strong heating is applied at the wall facing the reaction chamber. The flow is found to be steady-state or oscillating depending on the strengths of the h…
Direct numerical simulations are carried out to study flow structure and transport properties in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical cell of aspect ratio one with an imposed axial magnetic field. Flows at the Prandtl number 0.025 and the Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers up to $10^9$ and 1400 are considered. The results are consistent with those of earlier experimental and numerical data. As anticipated, the heat transfer rate and kinetic energy are suppressed by strong magnetic field. At the same time, their growth with the Rayleigh number is found to be faster in flows at high …
We consider convection in an internally heated layer of fluid that is bounded below by a perfect insulator and above by a poor conductor. The poorly conducting boundary is modelled by a fixed heat flux. Using solely analytical methods, we find linear and energy stability thresholds for the static state, and we construct a lower bound on the mean temperature that applies to all flows. The linear stability analysis yields a Rayleigh number above which the static state is linearly unstable ($R_L$), and the energy analysis yields a Rayleigh number below which it is globally stable ($R_E$). For var…
Heat and momentum transfer of low-Prandtl-number fluid ($Pr=0.029$) in a closed rectangular cavity ($100\times60\times10$ mm$^3$) heated at one side and cooled at the opposite side are analyzed. The electromagnetic forces into the liquid metal are generated by the travelling magnetic field inductor and directed towards buoyancy forces. Large eddy simulations are performed with the Grashof number $Gr$ from $1.9\cdot 10^5$ to $7.6\cdot 10^7$ and the electromagnetic forcing parameter $F$ from $2.6\cdot 10^4$ to $2.6\cdot10^6$. An experimental validation of the simulation results of vertical conve…
Previous numerical studies on homogeneous Rayleigh-Bénard convection, which is Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) without walls, and therefore without boundary layers, have revealed a scaling regime that is consistent with theoretical predictions of bulk-dominated thermal convection. In this so-called asymptotic regime, previous studies have predicted that the Nusselt number ($Nu$) and the Reynolds number ($Re$) vary with the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) according to $Nu\sim Ra^{1/2}$ and $Re\sim Ra^{1/2}$ at small Prandtl number ($Pr$). In this study, we consider a flow that is similar to RBC but wit…
Approximate analytical solution of two dimensional problem for stationary Navier-Stokes, continuity and Fourier-Kirchhoff equations describing free convective heat transfer from isothermal surface of half infinite vertical plate is presented. The problem formulation is based on the typical for natural convection assumptions: the fluid noncompressibility and Boussinesq approximation. We also assume that orthogonal to the plate component of velocity is small. Apart from the basic equations it includes boundary conditions: the constant temperature and zero velocity on the plate. At the starting p…
Motivated by the ablation of vertical ice faces in salt water, we use three-dimensional direct numerical simulations to investigate the heat and salt fluxes in two-scalar vertical convection. For parameters relevant to ice-ocean interfaces in the convection-dominated regime, we observe that the salinity field drives the convection and that heat is essentially transported as a passive scalar. By varying the diffusivity ratio of heat and salt (i.e., the Lewis number $Le$), we identify how the different molecular diffusivities affect the scalar fluxes through the system. Away from the walls, we f…
We study longwave Marangoni convection in a layer heated from below. Using the scaling $k = O(\sqrt{\rm Bi})$, where $k$ is the wavenumber and ${\rm Bi}$ is the Biot number, we derive a set of amplitude equations. Analysis of this set shows presence of monotonic and oscillatory modes of instability. Oscillatory mode has not been previously found for such direction of heating. Studies of weakly nonlinear dynamics demonstrate that stable steady and oscillatory patterns can be found near the stability threshold.
The behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number ($Pr_t$) for buoyancy-affected flows near a vertical surface is investigated as an extension study of {Gibson \& Leslie, \emph{Int. Comm. Heat Mass Transfer}, Vol. 11, pp. 73-84 (1984)}. By analysing the location of mean velocity maxima in a differentially heated vertical planar channel, we {identify an} {infinity anomaly} for the eddy viscosity $ν_t$ and the turbulent Prandtl number $Pr_t$, as both terms are divided by the mean velocity gradient according to the standard definition, in vertical buoyant flow. To predict the quantities of interest, …
In thermal convection for very large Rayleigh numbers ($Ra$), the thermal and viscous boundary layers (BL) undergo a transition from a classical state to an ultimate state. In the former state, the BL thicknesses follow a laminar-like Prandtl-Blasius-Polhausen scaling, whereas in the latter, the BLs are turbulent with log-corrections in the sense of Prandtl and von Kármán. Here, we report evidence of this transition via changes in the BL structure of vertical natural convection (VC), which is a buoyancy driven flow between differentially heated vertical walls. The dataset spans $Ra$-values fro…
