Effect of interfacial disturbances on instabilities of buoyant/thermocapillary convective flows in rectangular cavities is studied in a series of numerical experiments. The computations are carried out for several two-liquid two-layer systems taking into account properties of liquids used in previously published experiments. Relation between the interface deformations and the Boussinesq approximation is discussed. It is shown that in some systems, including the interface disturbances in the model can alter the critical temperature difference by approximately 10%, producing either destabilizing, or stabilizing effect. The interface oscillations appear as standing or travelling waves whose wavelength can vary from short wave lengths to a single wave occupying all the available space. Rough estimations show that in some liquid-liquid systems the interface oscillations amplitude can reach several tens of microns. Patterns of the most unstable disturbances are presented and discussed. It is argued that instabilities in some two layer systems develop similarly to the Holmboe instabilities in stratified mixing layers.
A novel way to handle surface tension gradient driven flows is developed in the volume-of-fluid (VoF) framework. Using an open source Navier-Stokes solver, {\it Basilisk}, and the present formulation, we investigate thermocapillary migration of drops/bubbles in a surrounding medium. Several validation exercises have been performed, which demonstrate that the present solver is a robust one to investigate interfacial flows with variable surface tension. It is well known that it is a challenging task to numerically model the tangential and normal surface forces arising due to interfacial tension.…
The two-dimensional flow of viscous incompressible liquid in a square cavity with a free boundary and differentially heated vertical sides is considered in the present work. The influence of gravitational and thermocapillary convection on temperature and velocity fields is studied in large range of dimensionless parameters and similarity criteria using equations in a Boussinesq approximation. Limiting cases of dimensionless parameters are analyzed numerically.
Self-rewetting fluids (SRFs), such as aqueous solutions of long-chain alcohols, exhibit anomalous quadratic dependence of surface tension on temperature having a minimum and with a positive gradient. When compared to the normal fluids (NFs), the SRFs can be associated with significantly modified interfacial dynamics, which have recently been exploited to enhance flow and thermal transport in various applications (e.g., microgravity and microscale transport systems). In this work, first, we develop a new analytical solution of thermocapillary convection in superimposed two SRF layers confined w…
When the liquid has a free interface and is heated nonuniformly then besides the gravitational convection a different motion appears. This kind of a motion is originated because of a gradient of the surface tension over the liquid interface. It is suggested to call it a thermocapillary motion in analogy with an electrocapillary motion. The present paper develops a theory of thermocapillary motion for two distinct geometries: a liquid layer and a liquid drop suspended in another viscous medium. For both geometries, assuming the non-deformable interfaces, the velocity profiles are found and feas…
The long-duration fluid physics experiments on a thermocapillary-driven flow have been carried out on the Japanese experiment module 'Kibo' aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since 2008. In these experiments, various aspects of thermocapillary convection in a half-zone (HZ) liquid bridge of high Prandtl number fluid have been examined under the advantages of the long-duration high-quality microgravity environment. This fluid dynamics video introduce a pinch off of liquid bridge of 30 mm in diameter as a part of the on-orbit experiments. The effect of thermocapillary-driven flow on th…
In this paper, we develop a phase-field model for binary incompressible (quasi-incompressible) fluid with thermocapillary effects, which allows for the different properties (densities, viscosities and heat conductivities) of each component while maintaining thermodynamic consistency. The governing equations of the model including the Navier-Stokes equations with additional stress term, Cahn-Hilliard equations and energy balance equation are derived within a thermodynamic framework based on entropy generation, which guarantees thermodynamic consistency. A sharp-interface limit analysis is carri…
Theresults of numerical modelinghas based on the solution of Navier-Stokes equations for convection oftwo-layer system air-water are presented. The influence of thermocapillary and gravitational convection on the deformation and time averaged position of the interface of air-water system under sudden lateral heating of a square-section cavity are shown.
In this paper, we extend a lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) with continuous surface fore (CSF) to simulate thermocapillary flows. The model is designed on our previous CSF LBE for athermal two phase flow, in which the interfacial tension forces and the Marangoni stresses as the results of the interface interactions between different phases are described by a conception of CSF. In this model, the sharp interfaces between different phases are separated by a narrow transition layers, and the kinetics and morphology evolution of phase separation would be characterized by an order parameter visa Ca…
Motived by recent ground-based and microgravity experiments investigating the interfacial dynamics of a volatile liquid (FC-72, $Pr=12.34$) contained in a heated cylindrical cell, we numerically study the thermocapillary-driven flow in such an evaporating liquid layer. Particular attention is given to the prediction of the transition of the axisymmetric flow to fully three-dimensional patterns when the applied temperature increases. The numerical simulations rely on an improved one-sided model of evaporation by including heat and mass transfer through the gas phase via the heat transfer Biot n…
This paper presents a numerical study of three-dimensional laminar mixed convection within a liquid flowing on a horizontal channel heated uniformly from below. The upper surface is free and assumed to be flat. The coupled Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically by the finite volume method taking into account the thermocapillary effects (Marangoni effect). When the strength of the buoyancy, thermocapillary effects and forced convective currents are comparable $(Ri\backsimeq O(1)$ and $Bd=Ra/Ma \backsimeq O(1))$, the results show that the development of instabilities in the fo…
From Sheared Annular Centrifugal Rayleigh-Bénard Convection to Radially Heated Taylor-Couette Flow: Exploring the Impact of Buoyancy and Shear on Heat Transfer and Flow Structure
Enhancing the efficiency of water electrolysis, which can be severely impacted by the nucleation and growth of bubbles, is key in the energy transition. In this combined experimental and numerical study, in-situ bubble evolution and dissolution processes are imaged and compared to numerical simulations employing the immersed boundary method. We find that it is crucial to include solutal driven natural convection in order to represent the experimentally observed bubble behaviour even though such effects have commonly been neglected in modelling efforts so far. We reveal how the convective patte…
We study shallow moist Rayleigh-Benard convection in the Boussinesq approximation in three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The thermodynamics of phase changes is approximated by a piecewise linear equation of state close to the phase boundary. The impact of phase changes on the turbulent fluctuations and the transfer of buoyancy through the layer is discussed as a function of the Rayleigh number and the ability to form liquid water. The enhanced buoyancy flux due to phase changes is compared with dry convection reference cases and related to the cloud cover in the convection layer. T…
We examine the statistics of active scalar fluctuations in high-Rayleigh number fingering convection with high-resolution three-dimensional numerical experiments. The one-point distribution of buoyancy fluctuations is found to present significantly non-Gaussian tails. A modified theory based on an original approach by Yakhot (1989) is used to model the active scalar distributions as a function of the conditional expectation values of scalar dissipation and fluxes in the flow. Simple models for these two quantities highlight the role of blob-like coherent structures for scalar statistics in fin…
We study the thermocapillary creeping flow induced by a thermal gradient at the liquid-air interface in the presence of insoluble surfactants (impurities). Convective sweeping of the surfactants causes density inhomogeneities that confers in-plane elastic features to the interface. This mechanism is discussed for radially symmetric temperature fields, in both the deep and shallow water regimes. When mass transport is controlled by convection, it is found that surfactants are depleted from a region whose size is inversely proportional to the interfacial elasticity. Both the concentration and th…
Coriolis-centrifugal convection (C$^3$) in a cylindrical domain constitutes an idealised model of tornadic storms, where the rotating cylinder represents the mesocyclone of a supercell thunderstorm. We present a suite of C$^3$ direct numerical simulations, analysing the influence of centrifugal buoyancy on the formation of tornado-like vortices (TLVs). TLVs are self-consistently generated provided the flow is within the quasi-cyclostrophic (QC) regime. This requires the Froude number to be greater than the radius-to-height aspect ratio, $Fr \gtrsim γ$. We show that the TLVs share many features…
In rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, columnar vortices advect horizontally in a stochastic manner. When the centrifugal buoyancy is present the vortices exhibit radial motions that can be explained through a Langevin-type stochastic model. Surprisingly, anomalous outward motion of cyclones is observed in a centrifugation-dominant flow regime, which is contrary to the well-known centrifugal effect. We interpret this phenomenon as a symmetry-breaking of both the population and vorticity magnitude of the vortices brought about by the centrifugal buoyancy. Consequently, the cyclones submit to t…
The behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number ($Pr_t$) for buoyancy-affected flows near a vertical surface is investigated as an extension study of {Gibson \& Leslie, \emph{Int. Comm. Heat Mass Transfer}, Vol. 11, pp. 73-84 (1984)}. By analysing the location of mean velocity maxima in a differentially heated vertical planar channel, we {identify an} {infinity anomaly} for the eddy viscosity $ν_t$ and the turbulent Prandtl number $Pr_t$, as both terms are divided by the mean velocity gradient according to the standard definition, in vertical buoyant flow. To predict the quantities of interest, …
Double-diffusive convection driven by both thermal and compositional buoyancy in a rotating cylindrical annulus with conical caps is considered with the aim to establish whether a small fraction of compositional buoyancy added to the thermal buoyancy (or vice versa) can significantly reduce the critical Rayleigh number and amplify convection in planetary cores. It is shown that the neutral surface describing the onset of convection in the double-buoyancy case is essentially different from that of the well-studied purely thermal case, and does indeed allow the possibility of low-Rayleigh number…
Finger convection is observed experimentally in an electrodeposition cell in which a destabilizing gradient of copper ions is maintained against a stabilizing temperature gradient. This double-diffusive system shows finger convection even if the total density stratification is unstable. Finger convection is replaced by an ordinary convection roll if convection is fast enough to prevent sufficient heat diffusion between neighboring fingers, or if the thermal buoyancy force is less than 1/30 of the compositional buoyancy force. At the transition, the ion transport is larger than without an oppos…
The focus of this study is to understand the evolution of instability in centrifugal buoyancy-induced flow in a rotating system. The problem is of interest in atmospheric flows as well as in engineering applications. In this study, we perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and multi-dimensional stability analyses by using a forced DNS approach. We systematically and independently vary the Rayleigh and Mach numbers. The heat transfer by thermal conduction is used as base flow and maintained as a reference state, upon which the growth of sm…
The velocity-vorticity correlation integral (Chkhetiani invariant) is an invariant of a viscous Karman-Howarth equation. In the tree-dimensional space this invariant can naturally determine a turbulent diffusivity (viscosity). It is shown, using results of direct numerical simulations, that distributed chaos dominated by this integral can provide an adequate description of the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, stably stratified turbulence and Rayleigh-Taylor mixing at Prandtl number $Pr \sim 1$.
The motion of a viscous droplet in unbounded Poiseuille flow under the combined influence of bulk-insoluble surfactant and linearly varying temperature field aligned in the direction of imposed flow is studied analytically. Neglecting fluid inertia, thermal convection and shape deformation, asymptotic analysis is performed to obtain the velocity of a force-free surfactant-laden droplet. The present study is focused on two limiting situations of surfactant transport: (i) small surface Peclet number, and (ii) high surface Peclet number. Thermocapillary-induced Marangoni stress, strength of which…
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection in horizontal cavity with Soret and Dufour effects is investigated numerically based on SIMPLE algorithm with QUICK scheme in non-uniform staggered grid system. The results show that double-diffusive convection develops from steady-state convection-dominated, periodic oscillatory, quasi-periodic oscillatory to chaotic flow, and finally return to periodic oscillation as buoyancy ratio increases. Moreover, fundamental frequency and fluctuation amplitude increase with buoyancy ratio. As Rayleigh number increases, transition trendy of oscillatory convection …
We explore the generalization properties of an echo state network applied as a reduced dynamical model to predict flux-driven two-dimensional turbulent convection. To this end, we consider a convection domain at fixed height with a variable ratio of buoyancy fluxes at the top and bottom boundaries, which break the top-down symmetry in comparison to the standard Rayleigh-Bénard case thus leading to highly asymmetric mean and fluctuation profiles across the layer. Our direct numerical simulation model describes a convective boundary layer in a simple way. The data are used to train and test a re…
We perform idealised numerical simulations of magnetic buoyancy instabilities in a model of the solar tachocline. We introduce a simplified model of magnetic flux pumping in an upper layer (the convection zone), and study the effects of its inclusion on the evolution of buoyancy instabilities in a lower layer (the radiative interior). We study its effects on the instability of both a preconceived magnetic slab and of a shear-generated magnetic layer. In the former, we find that in the regime in which the downward pumping velocity is comparable with the Alfven speed of the magnetic layer, flux …
In this paper we found, by means of numerical simulations, a transition in the oscillatory character of the flow field for a particular combination of buoyancy and spacing in an array of six circular cylinders at a Reynolds number of 100 and Prandtl number of 0.7. The cylinders are iso-thermal and they are aligned with the Earth acceleration (g). According to the array orientation, an aiding or an opposing buoyancy is considered. The effect of natural convection with respect to the forced convection is modulated with the Richardson number, Ri, ranging between -1 and 1. Two values of center to …
Motivated by the mushy zones of sea ice, volcanoes, and icy moons of the outer solar system, we perform a theoretical and numerical study of boundary-layer convection along a vertical heated wall in a bounded ideal mushy region. The mush is comprised of a porous and reactive binary alloy with a mixture of saline liquid in a solid matrix, and is studied in the near-eutectic approximation. Here we demonstrate the existence of four regions and study their behavior asymptotically. Starting from the bottom of the wall, the four regions are (i) an isotropic corner region; (ii) a buoyancy dominated v…
We use well-resolved numerical simulations to study the combined effects of buoyancy, pressure-driven shear and rotation on the melt rate and morphology of a layer of pure solid overlying its liquid phase in three dimensions at a Rayleigh number $Ra = 1.25 \times 10^5$. During thermal convection we find that the rate of melting of the solid phase varies non-monotonically with the strength of the imposed shear flow. In the absence of rotation, depending on whether buoyancy or shear dominates the flow, we observe either domes or ridges aligned in the direction of the shear flow respectively. Fur…
Fully resolved simulations are used to quantify the effects of heat transfer in the presence of buoyancy on the drag of a spatially fixed heated spherical particle at low Reynolds numbers ($Re$) in the range $10^{-3} \le Re \le 10$ in a variable property fluid. The amount of heat addition from the sphere encompasses both, the heating regime where the Boussinesq approximation holds and the regime where it breaks down. The particle is assumed to have a low Biot number which means that the particle is uniformly at the same temperature and has no internal temperature gradients. Scaling buoyancy wi…
This article represents a set of results numerically studied in the framework of laminar double diffusive natural convection. We have investigated the thermophysical comportment of Water-based incompressible nanofluids circulating, due to buoyancy forces, inside a two-dimensional enclosed rectangular cavity for two comparable cases of considering or not a centered isothermal block. Results of this investigation are mainly built on parametric study of the most analytical variables that govern the flow. The buoyancy ratio ranged from -5 to 100, while Rayleigh number ranged from 103 to 106, and L…
We consider the problem of horizontal convection in which non-uniform buoyancy, $b_{\rm s}(x,y)$, is imposed on the top surface of a container and all other surfaces are insulating. Horizontal convection produces a net horizontal flux of buoyancy, $\mathbf{J}$, defined by vertically and temporally averaging the interior horizontal flux of buoyancy. We show that $\overline{\mathbf{J}\cdot\mathbf{\nabla}b_{\rm s}}=-κ\langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla}b|^2\rangle$; overbar denotes a space-time average over the top surface, angle brackets denote a volume-time average and $κ$ is the molecular diffusivity o…
Turbulence in the flow of fluid through a pipe can be suppressed by buoyancy forces. As the suppression of turbulence leads to severe heat transfer deterioration, this is an important and undesirable phenomenon in both heating and cooling applications. Vertical flow is often considered, as the axial buoyancy force can help drive the flow. With heating measured by the buoyancy parameter $C$, our DNS show that shear-driven turbulence may either be completely laminarised or transitions to a relatively quiescent convection-driven state. Buoyancy forces cause a flattening of the base flow profile, …
Buoyancy effect on low-flow condition convective heat transfer of non-conventional coolants, such as liquid metal and molten salts, is a crucial safety factor to advanced reactors under transient or accidental scenarios. The distinct heat transfer characteristics of non-unitary Prandtl fluids and the inherent complexity of the low-flow mixed convection phenomena requires the development of novel turbulent and heat transfer models that are adaptive to different spatiotemporal scales involved in the mixed convection heat transfer. In this work, direct numerical simulation of low-flow mixed conve…
Recent investigations have revealed that ion transport from aqueous electrolytes to ion-selective surfaces is subject to electroconvective instability that stems from coupling of hydrodynamics with electrostatic forces. Electroconvection is shown to enhance ion mixing and the net rate of transport. However, systems subject to electroconvection inherently involve fluid density variation set by salinity gradient in the bulk fluid. In this study we thoroughly examine the interplay of gravitational convection and chaotic electroconvection. Our results reveal that buoyant forces can significantly i…
Buoyancy-thermocapillary convection in a layer of volatile liquid driven by a horizontal temperature gradient arises in a variety of situations. Recent studies have shown that the composition of the gas phase, which is typically a mixture of vapour and air, has a noticeable effect on the critical Marangoni number describing the onset of convection as well as on the observed convection pattern. Specifically, as the total pressure or, equivalently, the average concentration of air is decreased, the threshold of the instability leading to the emergence of convective rolls is found to increase rat…
The influence of a small relative density difference on the displacement of two miscible liquids is studied experimentally in transparent 2D networks of micro channels. Both stable displacements in which the denser fluid enters at the bottom of the cell and displaces the lighter one and unstable displacements in which the lighter fluid is injected at the bottom and displaces the denser one are realized. Except at the lowest mean flow velocity U, the average $C(x,t)$ of the relative concentration satisfies a convection-dispersion equation. The dispersion coefficient is studied as function of th…
Buoyancy-driven convection is likely the dominant driver of turbulent motions in the universe, and thus, is widely studied by physicists, engineers, geophysicists and astrophysicists. Maybe unsurprisingly, these different communities discuss the gross convective behaviors in different ways, often without significant cross-talk existing between them. Here, we seek to draw connections between these communities. We do so by carrying out a set of basic scale estimations for how heat and fluid momentum transport should behave in non-rotating, slowly rotating and rapidly rotating buoyancy-driven con…
A starting plume or jet has a well-defined, evolving head that is driven through the surrounding quiescent fluid by a localized flux of either buoyancy or momentum, or both. We studied the scaling and morphology of starting plumes produced by a constant flux of buoyant fluid from a small, submerged outlet. The plumes were laminar and spanned a wide range of plume Richardson numbers Ri. Ri is the dimensionless ratio of the buoyancy forces to inertial effects, and is thus our measurements crossed over the transition between buoyancy-driven plumes and momentum-driven jets. We found that the ascen…
Turbulent mixed convection in channel flows with heterogeneous surfaces is studied using direct numerical simulations. The relative importance between buoyancy and shear effects, characterized by the bulk Richardson number $Ri_b$, is varied in order to cover the flow regimes of forced, mixed and natural convection, which are associated with different large-scale flow organization. The heterogeneous surface consists of streamwise-aligned ridges, which are known to induce secondary motion in case of forced convection. The large-scale streamwise rolls emerging under smooth-wall mixed convection c…
Rayleigh--Bénard convection, which is the buoyancy-induced motion of a fluid enclosed between two horizontal plates, is an idealised setup to study thermal convection. We analyse the modes that transport the most heat between the plates by computing the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of numerical data. Instead of the usual POD ansatz of finding modes that describe the energy best, we propose a method that is optimal in describing the heat transport. Thereby, we can determine the modes with the major influence on the heat transport and the coherent structures in the convection cell. We a…
This report summarises the results for the numerical simulation of thermocapillary convection in a two-fluid system with a deformable interface. An explicit technique with 3rd order Runge-Kutta method in time, 2nd order ENO for the advection terms, and 2nd order central-differencing for the diffusion terms are employed in the momentum equations for simulating the flow on a staggered grid using a Marker and Cell method. An energy equation is solved numerically and a level-set method is used to implicitly capture the interface. A constant contact angle condition is assumed between the end walls …
Boiling is an extremely effective way to promote heat transfer from a hot surface to a liquid due to several mechanisms many of which are not understood in quantitative detail. An important component of the overall process is that the buoyancy of the bubbles compounds with that of the liquid to give rise to a much enhanced natural convection. In this paper we focus specifically on this enhancement and present a numerical study of the resulting two-phase Rayleigh-Bénard convection process. We make no attempt to model other aspects of the boiling process such as bubble nucleation and detachment.…
A theoretical model is developed for the forced convection film boiling phenomenon over a heated sphere moving vertically downwards in the water. Unprecedented to the previous analytical studies, this model accounts for the buoyancy effects while solving the momentum, and energy equations in the vapor phase to obtain the velocity, and the temperature distribution in terms of the vapor boundary layer thickness. To calculate the vapor boundary layer thickness an energy balance is applied at the vapor-liquid interface. The flow of liquid around the sphere is considered to be governed by the poten…
