Coupled mixed convective and stratified systems are common in natural flows. To study experimentally the associated dynamics, we use a singular property of water: its non-linear equation of state is characterised by a maximum density close to $4^{\circ}$C. By heating the top of a tank at $35^{\circ}$C and cooling the bottom at $0^{\circ}$C, a two-layer configuration spontaneously appears. The convective motion in the bottom layer consists mostly of a large-scale circulation and rising cold plumes. This turbulent flow generates propagating internal gravity waves in the upper stably-stratified layer. PIV measurements are performed and spectral characteristics of the convection and internal gravity waves are presented. An horizontal large-scale reversing flow in the stratified layer is observed which is viscously driven by a third, intermediate layer. This buffer layer is located between the convective and stratified layers and is thermally coupled with the convective one, hence sustaining a strong horizontal shear. Three dimensional direct numerical simulations with geometry and physical parameters close to the experimental ones corroborate our experimental results.
Ring-like ripples on the surface of icicles are an example of morphological instability of the ice-water interface during ice growth under supercooled water film flow. The surface of icicles is typically covered with ripples of about 1 cm in wavelength, and the wavelength appears to be almost independent of external temperature, icicle radius, and volumetric water flow rate. One side of the water layer consists of the water-air surface and growing ice is the other. This is one of the more complicated moving phase boundary problems with two interfaces. A recent theoretical work [K. Ueno, Phys. …
Theresults of numerical modelinghas based on the solution of Navier-Stokes equations for convection oftwo-layer system air-water are presented. The influence of thermocapillary and gravitational convection on the deformation and time averaged position of the interface of air-water system under sudden lateral heating of a square-section cavity are shown.
It is usually expected that surface tension driven flow dominates at small scales. Evaporation from the meniscus of ethanol/methanol confined in a capillary induces Marangoni convection at the meniscus which has been investigated by previous researchers. However, Marangoni convection is unexpectedly absent at an evaporating water meniscus confined inside a small micro-channel which is reported in this work. The velocity near the water meniscus is studied using confocal micro-PIV. The water meniscus is formed at the end of a micro-channel filled with water keeping the meniscus exposed to atmosp…
Measurements of heat transport, as expressed by the Nusselt number $Nu$, are reported for turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection of water containing up to 120 ppm by weight of poly-[ethylene oxide] with a molecular weight of $4\times10^6$ g/mole. Over the Rayleigh number range $ 5\times 10^9 \alt Ra \alt 7 \times 10^{10}$ $Nu$ is smaller than it is for pure water by up to 10%.
Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) effects on the flow organization in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard turbulence are numerically analyzed. The working fluid is water. We focus on the temperature profiles, the center temperature, the Nusselt number, and on the analysis of the velocity field. Several velocity amplitudes (or Reynolds numbers) and several kinetic profiles are introduced and studied; these together describe the various features of the rather complex flow organization. The results are presented both as functions of the Rayleigh number Ra (with Ra up to 10^8) for fixed temperature differ…
We experimentally investigate the dynamics of water cooled from below at 0^oC and heated from above. Taking advantage of the unusual property that water's density maximum is at about 4^oC, this set-up allows us to simulate in the laboratory a turbulent convective layer adjacent to a stably stratified layer, which is representative of atmospheric and stellar conditions. High precision temperature and velocity measurements are described, with a special focus on the convectively excited internal waves propagating in the stratified zone. Most of the convective energy is at low frequency, and corre…
Water-ice systems undergoing melting develop complex spatio-temporal interface dynamics and a non-trivial temperature field. In this contribution, we present computational aspects of a recently conducted validation study that aims at investigating the role of natural convection for cryo-interface dynamics of water-ice. We will present a fixed grid model known as the enthalpy porosity method. It is based on introducing a phase field and employs mixture theory. The resulting PDEs are solved using a finite volume discretization. The second part is devoted to experiments that have been conducted f…
We consider the bifurcation scenario that is found in Rayleigh-Benard convection of binary fluid mixtures like ethanol-water at positive separation ratios and small Lewis numbers leading to a bifurcation sequence of square, oscillatory crossroll, stationary crossroll, and roll patterns. We propose a system of four coupled amplitudes that is capable to model all important properties.

Turbulent and internal wave motions are important for the exchange of momentum, heat and suspended matter in the deep-sea which is generally stably stratified in density. Turbulence-generation models involve shear of vertical current differences that deforms the stratified waters, and convection that is drive by (unstable) buoyancy. Shear-generation is found more general in the well-stratified ocean-interior, while convection is known to occur near the sea-surface, e.g. via nighttime cooling. Far below the surface, the Western-Mediterranean Sea is very weakly stratified and offers opportunity …
Water's density maximum at 4C makes it well suited to study internal gravity wave excitation by convection: an increasing temperature profile is unstable to convection below 4C, but stably stratified above 4C. We present numerical simulations of a water-like fluid near its density maximum in a two dimensional domain. We successfully model the damping of waves in the simulations using linear theory, provided we do not take the weak damping limit typically used in the literature. In order to isolate the physical mechanism exciting internal waves, we use the novel spectral code Dedalus to run sev…
Penetrative turbulence, which occurs in a convectively unstable fluid layer and penetrates into an adjacent, originally stably stratified layer, is numerically and theoretically analyzed. We chose the most relevant example, namely thermally driven flow of water with a temperature around $T_m\approx 4^\circ\rm{C}$, where it has its density maximum. We pick the Rayleigh-Bénard geometry with the bottom plate temperature $T_b > 4^\circ\rm{C}$ and the top plate temperature $T_t \le 4^\circ\rm{C}$. Next to the overall thermal driving strength set by the temperature difference $Δ= T_b - T_t$ (the Ray…
We present the results of an experimental investigation on parametrically driven waves in a water half-cylinder on a rigid horizontal plate, which is sinusoidally vibrated in the vertical direction. As the forcing amplitude is raised above a critical value, stationary waves are excited in the water half-cylinder. Parametrically excited subharmonic waves are non-axisymmetricand qualitatively different from the axisymmetric Savart-Plateau-Rayleigh waves in a vertical liquid cylinder or jet. Depending on the driving frequency, stationary waves of different azimuthal wave numbers are excited. A li…
We report a new thermal boundary layer equation for turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Prandtl number Pr>1 that takes into account the effect of turbulent fluctuations. These fluctuations are neglected in existing equations, which are based on steady-state and laminar assumptions. Using this new equation, we derive analytically the mean temperature profiles in two limits: (a) Pr>1, Pr~1 and (b) Pr>>1. These two theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of our direct numerical simulations for Pr=4.38 (water) and Pr=2547.9 (glycerol) respectively.
We present an experimental investigation of the dynamics and flow-coupling of convective turbulent flows in a cylindrical Rayleigh-Benard convection cell with two immiscible fluids, water and fluorinert FC-77 electronic liquid (FC77). It is found that one large-scale circulation (LSC) roll exists in each of the fluid layers, and that their circulation planes have two preferred azimuthal orientations separated by $\simπ$. A surprising finding of the study is that cessations/reversals of the LSC in FC77 of the two-layer system occur much more frequently than they do in single-layer turbulent RBC…
The phenomenon of convection is found in a wide variety of settings on different scales -- from applications in the cooling technology of laptops to heating water on a stove, and from the movement of ocean currents to describing astrophysical events with the convective zones of stars. Given its importance in these diverse areas, the process of convection has been the focus of many research studies over the past two centuries. However, much less research has been conducted on how the presence of an obstruction in the flow can impact convection. In this work, we find that the presence of an obst…
We show that ripples on the surface of deep water which are driven parametrically by monochromatic vertical vibration represent ensembles of oscillating solitons, or quasi-particles, rather than waves. Horizontal mobility of oscillons determines the broadening of spectral lines and transitions from chaos to regular patterns. It is found that microscopic additions of proteins to water dramatically affect the oscillon mobility and drive transitions from chaos to order. The shape of the oscillons in physical space determines the shape of the frequency spectra of the surface ripple.
We present three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of internal waves excited by turbulent convection in a self-consistent, Boussinesq and Cartesian model of convective--stably-stratified fluids. We demonstrate that in the limit of large Rayleigh number ($Ra\in [4\times 10^7,10^9]$) and large stratification (Brunt-Väisälä frequencies $f_N \gg f_c$, where $f_c$ is the convective frequency), simulations are in good agreement with a theory that assumes waves are generated by Reynolds stresses due to eddies in the turbulent region (Lecoanet \& Quataert 2013 MNRAS 430 (3) 2363-2376). Specific…
Penetrative turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection which depends on the density maximum of water near $4^\circ\rm{C}$ is studied using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations (DNS). The working fluid is water near $4^\circ\rm{C}$ with Prandtl number $Pr=11.57$. The considered Rayleigh numbers $Ra$ range from $10^7$ to $10^{10}$. The density inversion parameter $θ_m$ varies from 0 to 0.9. It is found that the ratio of the top and bottom thermal boundary-layer thickness ($F_λ=λ_t^θ/λ_b^θ$) increases with increasing $θ_m$, and the relationship between $F_λ$ and …
We study the fractionation of two components between a well-mixed gas and a saturated convecting porous layer. Motivated by geological carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) storage we assume that convection is driven only by the dissolved concentration of the first component, while the second acts as a tracer with increased diffusivity. Direct numerical simulations for convection at high Rayleigh numbers reveal that the partitioning of the components, in general, does not follow a Rayleigh fractionation trend, as commonly assumed. Initially, increases in tracer diffusivity also increase its flux, because th…
The aspect ratio (Γ) dependence of the heat transfer (Nusselt number Nu in dimensionless form) in turbulent (two-dimensional) Rayleigh-Bénard convection is numerically studied in the regime $0.4 \le Γ\le 1.25$ for Rayleigh numbers $10^7 \le Ra \le Ra^{9}$ and Prandtl numbers Pr =0.7 (gas) and 4.3 (water). Nu (Γ) shows a very rich structure with sudden jumps and sharp transitions. We connect these structures to the way the flow organizes itself in the sample and explain why the aspect ratio dependence of Nu is more pronounced for small Pr. Even for fixed Γdifferent turbulent states (with differ…
Enhancing the efficiency of water electrolysis, which can be severely impacted by the nucleation and growth of bubbles, is key in the energy transition. In this combined experimental and numerical study, in-situ bubble evolution and dissolution processes are imaged and compared to numerical simulations employing the immersed boundary method. We find that it is crucial to include solutal driven natural convection in order to represent the experimentally observed bubble behaviour even though such effects have commonly been neglected in modelling efforts so far. We reveal how the convective patte…
When particles settle through a stable temperature or salinity gradient they can drive an instability known as sedimentary fingering convection. This phenomenon is thought to occur beneath sediment-rich river plumes in lakes and oceans, in the context of marine snow where decaying organic materials serve as the suspended particles, or in the atmosphere in the presence of aerosols or volcanic ash. Laboratory experiments of Houk and Green (1973) and Green (1987) have shown sedimentary fingering convection to be similar to the more commonly known thermohaline fingering convection in many ways. He…
We show that strong electric fields occurring in water near the surface of collapsing gas bubbles because of the flexoelectric effect can provoke dynamic electric breakdown in a micron-size region near the bubble and consider the scenario of the SBSL. The scenario is: (i) at the last stage of incomplete collapse of the bubble the gradient of pressure in water near the bubble surface has such a value and sign that the electric field arising from the flexoelectric effect exceeds the threshold field of the dynamic electrical breakdown of water and is directed to the bubble center; (ii) mobile ele…
We study shallow moist Rayleigh-Benard convection in the Boussinesq approximation in three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The thermodynamics of phase changes is approximated by a piecewise linear equation of state close to the phase boundary. The impact of phase changes on the turbulent fluctuations and the transfer of buoyancy through the layer is discussed as a function of the Rayleigh number and the ability to form liquid water. The enhanced buoyancy flux due to phase changes is compared with dry convection reference cases and related to the cloud cover in the convection layer. T…
We find an instability resulting in generation of large-scale vorticity in a fast rotating small-scale turbulence or turbulent convection with inhomogeneous fluid density along the rotational axis in anelastic approximation. The large-scale instability causes excitation of two modes: (i) the mode with dominant vertical vorticity and with the mean velocity being independent of the vertical coordinate; (ii) the mode with dominant horizontal vorticity and with the mean momentum being independent of the vertical coordinate. The mode with the dominant vertical vorticity can be excited in a fast rot…
Laboratory experiments were conducted to study heat transport characteristics in a nonhomogeneously heated fluid annulus subjected to rotation along the vertical axis (z). The nonhomogeneous heating was obtained by imposing radial and vertical temperature gradient (ΔT). The parameter range for this study was Rayleigh number, Ra=2.43x10^8-3.66x10^8, and Taylor number, Ta=6.45x10^8-27x10^8. The working fluid was water with a Prandtl number, Pr=7. Heat transport was measured for varying rotation rates (Ω) for fixed values of ΔT. The Nusselt number, Nu, plotted as a function of Ta distinctly showe…
This article represents a set of results numerically studied in the framework of laminar double diffusive natural convection. We have investigated the thermophysical comportment of Water-based incompressible nanofluids circulating, due to buoyancy forces, inside a two-dimensional enclosed rectangular cavity for two comparable cases of considering or not a centered isothermal block. Results of this investigation are mainly built on parametric study of the most analytical variables that govern the flow. The buoyancy ratio ranged from -5 to 100, while Rayleigh number ranged from 103 to 106, and L…
Subglacial lakes are isolated, cold-temperature and high-pressure water environments hidden under ice sheets, which might host extreme microorganisms. Here, we use two-dimensional direct numerical simulations in order to investigate the characteristic temperature fluctuations and velocities in freshwater subglacial lakes as functions of the ice overburden pressure, $p_i$, the water depth, $h$, and the geothermal flux, $F$. Geothermal heating is the unique forcing mechanism as we consider a flat ice-water interface. Subglacial lakes are fully convective when $p_i$ is larger than the critical pr…
The arrangement of brine above water across a micro porous permeable membrane is used to study high Rayleigh Number($10^{11}- 10^{10}$) high Schmidt number(650)turbulent convection. The flux shows 4/3$^{rd}$ scaling with line plume as the near wall coherent structures. Shifting of multiple large scale flow cells result in changing near membrane mean shear directions for large aspect ratios. Lower aspect ratios show single large scale flow cell and constant sense of mean shear.
We study hexagon patterns in non-Boussinesq convection of a thin rotating layer of water. For realistic parameters and boundary conditions we identify various linear instabilities of the pattern. We focus on the dynamics arising from an oscillatory side-band instability that leads to a spatially disordered chaotic state characterized by oscillating (whirling) hexagons. Using triangulation we obtain the distribution functions for the number of pentagonal and heptagonal convection cells. In contrast to the results found for defect chaos in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and in inclined-lay…
Melting and solidification processes are often affected by natural convection of the liquid, posing a multi-physics problem involving fluid flow, convective and diffusive heat transfer, and phase-change reactions. Enthalpy methods formulate this convection-coupled phase-change problem on a single computational domain. The governing equations can be solved accurately with a monolithic approach using mixed finite elements and Newton's method. Previously, the monolithic approach has relied on adaptive mesh refinement to regularize local nonlinearities at phase interfaces. This contribution instea…
Gravito-inertial waves are excited at the interface of convective and radiative regions and by the Reynolds stresses in the bulk of the convection zones of rotating stars and planets. Such waves have notable asteroseismic signatures in the frequency spectra of rotating stars, particularly among rapidly rotating early-type stars, which provides a means of probing their internal structure and dynamics. They can also transport angular momentum, chemical species, and energy from the excitation region to where they dissipate in radiative regions. To estimate the excitation and convective parameter …
Complex fluids flow in complex ways in complex structures. Transport of water and various organic and inorganic molecules in the central nervous system are important in a wide range of biological and medical processes [C. Nicholson, and S. Hrabětová, Biophysical Journal, 113(10), 2133(2017)]. However, the exact driving mechanisms are often not known. In this paper, we investigate flows induced by action potentials in an optic nerve as a prototype of the central nervous system (CNS). Different from traditional fluid dynamics problems, flows in biological tissues such as the CNS are coupled with…
Recent photometric observations of massive stars show ubiquitous low-frequency "red-noise" variability, which has been interpreted as internal gravity waves (IGWs). Simulations of IGWs generated by convection show smooth surface wave spectra, qualitatively matching the observed red-noise. On the other hand, theoretical calculations by Shiode et al (2013) and Lecoanet et al (2019) predict IGWs should manifest at the surface as regularly-spaced peaks associated with standing g-modes. In this work, we compare these theoretical approaches to simplified 2D numerical simulations. The simulations sho…
We calculate the flux of internal gravity waves (IGWs) generated by turbulent convection in stars. We solve for the IGW eigenfunctions analytically near the radiative-convective interface in a local, Boussinesq, and cartesian domain. We consider both discontinuous and smooth transitions between the radiative and convective regions and derive Green's functions to solve for the IGWs in the radiative region. We find that if the radiative-convective transition is smooth, the IGW flux depends on the exact form of the buoyancy frequency near the interface. IGW excitation is most efficient for very s…
Gravito-inertial waves can be excited at the interface of convective and radiative regions and by the Reynolds stresses in the bulk of the convection zone. The magnitude of their energy flux will therefore vary with the properties of the convection. To assess how convection changes with rotation, a simplified local monomodal model for rotating convection is presented that provides the magnitude of the rms velocity, degree of superadiabaticity, and characteristic length scale as a function of the convective Rossby number as well as with thermal and viscous diffusivities. In the context of this …
We report a novel form of convection in suspensions of the bioluminiscent marine bacterium $Photobacterium~phosphoreum$. Suspensions of these bacteria placed in a chamber open to the air create persistent luminiscent plumes most easily visible when observed in the dark. These flows are strikingly similar to the classical bioconvection pattern of aerotactic swimming bacteria, which create an unstable stratification by swimming upwards to an air-water interface, but they are a puzzle since the strain of $P.~phosphoreum$ used does not express flagella and therefore cannot swim. Systematic experim…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection with phase changes in an extended layer between two parallel impermeable planes is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations for Rayleigh numbers between 10^4 and 1.5\times 10^7 and for Prandtl number Pr=0.7. Two different sets of boundary conditions of temperature and total water content are compared: imposed constant amplitudes which translate into Dirichlet boundary conditions for the scalar field fluctuations about the quiescent diffusive equilibrium and constant imposed flux boundary conditions that result in Neumann boundary c…
We develop a theory of three-dimensional slow Rossby waves in rotating spherical density stratified convection. The Rossby waves with frequencies which are much smaller than the rotating frequency, are excited by a non-axisymmetric instability from the equilibrium based on the developed convection. These waves interact with the inertial waves and the density stratified convection. The density stratification is taken into account using the anelastic approximation for very low-Mach-number flows. We study long-term planetary Rossby waves with periods which are larger than two years. We suggest th…
The elliptical instability is an instability of elliptical streamlines, which can be excited by large-scale tidal flows in rotating fluid bodies, and excites inertial waves if the dimensionless tidal amplitude ($ε$) is sufficiently large. It operates in convection zones but its interactions with turbulent convection have not been studied in this context. We perform an extensive suite of Cartesian hydrodynamical simulations in wide boxes to explore the interactions of the elliptical instability and Rayleigh-Bénard convection. We find that geostrophic vortices generated by the elliptical instabi…
Our Sun, primarily composed of ionized hydrogen and helium, has a surface temperature of 5777~K and a radius $R_\odot \approx 696,000$ km. In the outer $R_\odot/3$, energy transport is accomplished primarily by convection. Using typical convective velocities $u\sim100\,\rm{m\,s^{-1}}$ and kinematic viscosities of order $10^{-4}$ m$^{2}$s$^{-1}$, we obtain a Reynolds number $Re \sim 10^{14}$. Convection is thus turbulent, causing a vast range of scales to be excited. The Prandtl number, $Pr$, of the convecting fluid is very low, of order $10^{-7}$\,--\,$10^{-4}$, so that the Rayleigh number ($\…
