We studied the intracluster medium of the galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 using deep XMM-Newton observations. The cluster hosts a remarkable 2-Mpc long, ~50-kpc wide radio relic that has been nicknamed the "Sausage". A smaller, more irregular counter-relic is also present, along with a faint giant radio halo. We analysed the distribution of the ICM physical properties, and searched for shocks by trying to identify density and temperature discontinuities. East of the southern relic, we find evidence of shock compression corresponding to a Mach number of 1.3, and speculate that the shock extends beyond the length of the radio structure. The ICM temperature increases at the northern relic. More puzzling, we find a "wall" of hot gas east of the cluster centre. A partial elliptical ring of hot plasma appears to be present around the merger. While radio observations and numerical simulations predict a simple merger geometry, the X-ray results point towards a more complex merger scenario.
Multiwavelength studies of radio relics at merger shocks set powerful constraints on the relics origin and formation mechanism. However, for X-ray observations, a main difficulty is represented by the low X-ray surface brightness far out in the cluster outskirts, where relics are typically found. Here, we present XMM-Newton results from a 130-ks observation of CIZA J2242.8+5301, a cluster at z=0.19 that hosts a double radio relic. We focus on the well-defined northern relic. There is a difference of ~55% between the temperature we measure behind the relic, and the temperature measured with Suz…
CIZA J2242.8+5301 is a merging system with a prominent (~2 Mpc long) radio relic, which together with the morphology of the X-ray emission provides strong evidence for a violent collision along the N-S axis. We present our constraints on the dark matter distribution of this unusual system using Subaru and CFHT imaging data. Measuring a high S/N lensing signal from this cluster is potentially a challenging task because of its proximity to the Milky Way plane (|b|~5 deg). We overcome this challenge with careful observation planning and systematics control, which enables us to successfully map th…
CIZA J2242.8+5301, a merging galaxy cluster at z=0.19, hosts a double-relic system and a faint radio halo. Radio observations at frequencies ranging from a few MHz to several GHz have shown that the radio spectral index at the outer edge of the N relic corresponds to a shock of Mach number 4.6+/-1.1, under the assumptions of diffusive shock acceleration of thermal particles in the test particle regime. Here, we present results from new Chandra observations of the cluster. The Chandra surface brightness profile across the N relic only hints to a surface brightness discontinuity (<2-sigma detect…
X-ray and radio observations of CIZA J2242.8+5301 suggest that it is a major cluster merger. Despite being well studied in the X-ray, and radio, little has been presented on the cluster structure and dynamics inferred from its galaxy population. We carried out a deep (i<25) broad band imaging survey of the system with Subaru SuprimeCam (g & i bands) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (r band) as well as a comprehensive spectroscopic survey of the cluster area (505 redshifts) using Keck DEIMOS. We use this data to perform a comprehensive galaxy/redshift analysis of the system, which is the …
Despite progress in understanding radio relics, there are still open questions regarding the underlying particle acceleration mechanisms. In this paper we present deep 1--4 GHz VLA observations of CIZA\,J2242.8+5301 ($z=0.1921$), a double radio relic cluster characterized by small projection on the plane of the sky. Our VLA observations reveal, for the first time, the complex morphology of the diffuse sources and the filamentary structure of the northern relic. We discover new faint diffuse radio emission extending north of the main northern relic. Our Mach number estimates for the northern an…
We present a weak-lensing analysis for the merging galaxy cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301, hosting double radio relics, using three-band Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging ($Br'z'$). Since the lifetime of dark matter halos colliding into clusters is longer than that of X-ray emitting gas halos, weak-lensing analysis is a powerful method to constrain a merger dynamics. Two-dimensional shear fitting using a clean background catalog suggests that the cluster undergoes a merger with a mass ratio of about 2:1. The main halo is located around the gas core in the southern region, while no concentrated gas core is…
We perform a systematic X-ray analysis of six giant radio relics in four clusters of galaxies using the Suzaku satellite. The sample includes CIZA 2242.8-5301, Zwcl 2341.1-0000, the South-East part of Abell 3667 and previously published results of the North-West part of Abell 3667 and Abell 3376. Especially we first observed the narrow (50 kpc) relic of CIZA 2242.8-5301 by Suzaku satellite, which enable us to reduce the projection effect. We report X-ray detections of shocks at the position of the relics in CIZA2242.8-5301 and Abell 3667 SE. At the position of the two relics in ZWCL2341.1-0000…
Cluster mergers may play a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies. Stroe et al. (2014) revealed unexpected over-densities of candidate H$α$ emitters near the ~1 Mpc-wide shock fronts of the massive (~2x10$^{15}$M$_{\odot}$) "Sausage" merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301. We used Keck/DEIMOS and WHT/AF2 to confirm 83 H$α$ emitters in and around the merging cluster. We find that cluster star-forming galaxies in the hottest X-ray gas and/or in the cluster sub-cores (away from the shock fronts) show high [SII]6716/[SII]6761 and high [SII]6716/H$α$, implying very low elec…
The giant radio relic in CIZA J2242.8+5301 is likely evidence of a Mpc sized shock in a massive merging galaxy cluster. However, the exact shock properties are still not clearly determined. In particular, the Mach number derived from the integrated radio spectrum exceeds the Mach number derived from the X-ray temperature jump by a factor of two. We present here a numerical study, aiming for a model that is consistent with the majority of observations of this galaxy cluster. We first show that in the northern shock upstream X-ray temperature and radio data are consistent with each other. We the…
CIZA J1358.9-4750 is a nearby (z = 0.074) pair of clusters of galaxies located close to the Galactic plane. It consists of two X-Ray extended humps at north-west and south-east separated by 14 arcmin (~ 1.2 Mpc), and an X-Ray bright bridge-like structure in between. With Suzaku, the south-east hump was shown to have a temperature of 5.6 keV and the north-west one 4.6 keV. Neither humps exhibit significant central cool component. The bridge region has a temperature higher than 9 keV at the maximum, and this hot region is distributed almost orthogonal to the bridge axis in agreement with the sho…
Giant radio relics are the arc-shaped diffuse radio emission regions observed in the outskirts of some merging galaxy clusters. They are believed to trace shock-waves in the intra-cluster medium. Recent observations demonstrated that some prominent radio relics exhibit a steepening above 2 GHz in their radio spectrum. This challenges standard theoretical models because shock acceleration is expected to accelerate electrons to very high energies with a power-law distribution in momentum. In this work we attempt to reconcile these data with the shock-acceleration scenario. We propose that the sp…
We report the results of XMM-Newton observations of the regions around the core of the Centaurus cluster where evidence for merging activity between the subgroup Cen 45 and the main Centaurus cluster has previously been observed using ASCA and ROSAT data. We confirm the ASCA findings of a temperature excess surrounding Cen 45. We find that this temperature excess can be explained using simple shock heating given the large line of sight velocity difference between Cen 45 and the surrounding main Centaurus cluster. We find that there is a statistically significant excess in metallicity around Ce…
Diffuse radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is observed in a number of merging galaxy clusters. It is currently believed that in mergers a fraction of the kinetic energy is channeled into non-thermal components, such as turbulence, cosmic rays and magnetic fields, that may lead to the formation of giant synchrotron sources in the ICM. Studying merging galaxy clusters in different evolutionary phases is fundamental to understanding the origin of radio emission in the ICM. We observed the nearby galaxy cluster pair RXC J1825.3+3026 ($z\sim0.065$) and CIZA J1824.1+3029 (…
Context: Chandra observations of the Abell 3411-3412 merging system have revealed an outbound bullet-like sub-cluster in the northern part and many surface brightness (SB) edges at the southern periphery, where multiple diffuse sources are also reported from radio observations. Notably, a south-eastern radio relic associated with fossil plasma from a radio galaxy and with a detected X-ray edge provides direct evidence of shock re-acceleration. The properties of the reported X-ray edges have yet to be constrained from a thermodynamic view. Aims: We use the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations to …
Abell 3266 is one of the X-ray brightest galaxy clusters in the sky and is a well-known merging system. Using the ability of the eROSITA telescope onboard SRG (Spectrum Röntgen Gamma) to observe a wide field with a single pointing, we analysed a new observation of the cluster out to a radius of R_200. The X-ray images highlight sub-structures present in the cluster, including the north-east--south-west merger seen in previous ASCA, Chandra, and XMM-Newton data, a merging group towards the north-west, and filamentary structures between the core and one or more groups towards the west. We comput…

Aims. The abundances of Fe in the intracluster medium of nearby (z<0.08) clusters were measured up to 0.3$\sim$ 0.5r$_{180}$. Methods. We analyzed 28 clusters of galaxies observed with XMM-Newton. We derived Fe abundances from the flux ratios of Fe lines to the continuum within an energy range of 3.5--6 keV to minimize and evaluate systematic uncertainties. Results. The radial profiles of the Fe abundances of relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy at their X-ray peak have similar slopes. These clusters show similar enhancements in the Fe abundance within 0.1$r_{180}$, and at 0.1--0.3$r_{180}$, they ha…
We report on the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z = 1.490 originally selected as an extended X-ray source in the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project. Further observations carried out with the VLT-FORS2 spectrograph allowed the spectroscopic confirmation of seven secure cluster members, providing a median system redshift of z = 1.490 +/- 0.009. The color magnitude diagram of XMMU J0338.8+0021 reveals the presence of a well populated red sequence with z-H ~ 3, albeit with an apparent significant scatter in color. Since we do not detect indications for strong star formation activity in any of th…
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of PLCK G036.7+14.9 from the Chandra-Planck Legacy Program. The high resolution X-ray observations reveal two close subclusters, G036N and G036S, which were not resolved by previous ROSAT, optical, or recent Planck observations. We perform detailed imaging and spectral analyses and use a simplified model to study the kinematics of this system. The basic picture is that PLCK G036.7+14.9 is undergoing a major merger (mass ratio close to unity) between the two massive subclusters, with the merger largely along the line-of-sight and probably at an ear…
We present deep J and Ks band photometry of 20 high redshift galaxy clusters between z=0.8-1.5, 19 of which are observed with the MOIRCS instrument on the Subaru Telescope. By using near-infrared light as a proxy for stellar mass we find the surprising result that the average stellar mass of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) has remained constant at ~9e11MSol since z~1.5. We investigate the effect on this result of differing star formation histories generated by three well known and independent stellar population codes and find it to be robust for reasonable, physically motivated choices of ag…
The $Planck$ satellite has recently completed an all-sky galaxy cluster survey exploiting the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect to locate some of the most massive systems observable. With a median redshift of $\left<z\right>=0.22$, the clusters found by $Planck$ at $z>0.3$ are proving to be exceptionally massive and/or disturbed systems. One notable $Planck$ discovery at $z=0.645$, PLCK G147.3-16.6, has a dual core and hosts a radio halo, indicating it is likely in the process of merging. We present a 16."5 resolution SZ observation of this high-$z$ merger using the Goddard-IRAM Supercond…
We present the characterisation of the massive cluster ClG-J$104803.7+313843$ at $z=0.76$ performed using a serendipitous XMM-Newton observation. High redshift and massive objects represent an ideal laboratory to benchmark our understanding of how cluster form and assembly formation driven mainly by gravity.Leveraging the high throughput of XMM-Newton we were firstly able to determine the redshift of the object, shedding light on ambiguous photometric redshift associations. We investigated the morphology of this cluster which shows signs of merging activities in the outskirts and a flat core. …
We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of three bimodal galaxy clusters selected as merging candidates at z ~ 0.1. These targets are part of MUSIC (MUlti--Wavelength Sample of Interacting Clusters), which is a general project designed to study the physics of merging clusters by means of multi-wavelength observations. Observations include spectro-imaging with XMM-Newton EPIC camera, multi-object spectroscopy (260 new redshifts), and wide-field imaging at the ESO 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes. We build a global picture of these clusters using X-ray luminosity and temperature maps together w…
Deep X-ray data from CHANDRA and XMM-Newton, and GMRT radio data are presented for ZwCl 2341.1+0000, an extremely unusual and complex merging cluster of galaxies at the intersection of optical filaments. We propose that energetics of multiple mergers and accretion flows has resulted in wide-spread shocks, acceleration of cosmic ray particles and amplification of weak magnetic fields. This results in Mpc-scale peripheral radio relics and halo like non-thermal emission observed near the merging center.
CIZA J2242.8+5301 (`Sausage') and 1RXS J0603.3+4213 (`Toothbrush') are two low-redshift ($z\sim0.2$), massive ($\sim2\times10^{15}M_\odot$), post-core passage merging clusters, which host shock waves traced by diffuse radio emission. To study their star-formation properties, we uniformly survey the `Sausage' and `Toothbrush' clusters in broad and narrow band filters and select a sample of $201$ and $463$ line emitters, down to a rest-frame equivalent width ($13$Å). We robustly separate between H$α$ and higher redshift emitters using a combination of optical multi-band (B, g, V, r, i, z) and sp…
Recent work based on a global measurement of the ICM properties find evidence for an increase of the iron abundance in galaxy clusters with temperature around 2-4 keV up to a value about 3 times larger than that typical of very hot clusters. We have started a study of the metal distribution in these objects from the sample of Baumgartner et al. (2005), aiming at resolving spatially the metal content of the ICM. We report here on a 42ks XMM observation of the first object of the sample, the cluster Abell 2028. The XMM observation reveals a complex structure of the cluster over scale of 300 kpc,…
We present a comprehensive galaxy cluster study of XMMU J1230.3+1339 based on a joint analysis of X-ray data, optical imaging and spectroscopy observations, weak lensing results, and radio properties for achieving a detailed multi-component view of this newly discovered system at z=0.975. We find an optically very rich and massive system with M200$\simeq$(4.2$\pm$0.8)$\times$10^14 M$\sun$, Tx$\simeq$5.3(+0.7--0.6)keV, and Lx$\simeq$(6.5$\pm$0.7)$\times$10^44 erg/s, for which various widely used mass proxies are measured and compared. We have identified multiple cluster-related components inclu…
A521 is an interacting galaxy cluster located at z=0.247, hosting a low frequency radio halo connected to an eastern radio relic. Previous Chandra observations hinted at the presence of an X-ray brightness edge at the position of the relic, which may be a shock front. We analyze a deep observation of A521 recently performed with XMM-Newton in order to probe the cluster structure up to the outermost regions covered by the radio emission. The cluster atmosphere exhibits various brightness and temperature anisotropies. In particular, two cluster cores appear to be separated by two cold fronts. We…
X-ray observations were used to examine the complex temperature structure of Abell 85, a cool-core galaxy cluster. Temperature features can provide evidence of merging events which shock heat the intracluster gas. Temperature maps were made from both \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM-Newton} obervations. The combination of a new, long-exposure \textit{XMM} observation and an improved temperature map binning technique produced the highest fidelity temperature maps of A85 to date. Hot regions were detected near the subclusters to the South and Southwest in both the \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XM…
Galaxy clusters grow by merging with other clusters, giving rise to Mpc-wide shock waves that travel at 1000-2500 km/s through the intra-cluster medium. To study the effects of merger shocks on the properties of cluster galaxies, we present the first spatially resolved spectroscopic view of 5 H$α$ emitting galaxies located in the wake of shock fronts in the low redshift (z~0.2), massive (~2$\times10^{15}$ M$_\odot$), post-core passage merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301 (nicknamed the `Sausage'). Our Gemini/GMOS-N integral field unit (IFU) observations, designed to capture H$α$ and [NII] emissi…
We present a galaxy cluster survey based on XMM-Newton observations that are located in Stripe 82 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The survey covers an area of 11.25 deg$^2$. The X-ray cluster candidates were selected as serendipitously extended detected sources from the third XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue (3XMM-DR5). A cross-correlation of the candidate list that comprises 94 objects with recently published X-ray and optically selected cluster catalogues provided optical confirmations and redshift estimates for about half of the candidate sample. We present a catalogue of X…
We present the results of $Suzaku$ and $XMM-Newton$ X-ray observations of the cluster pair 1E2216.0-0401 and 1E2215.7-0404. We discover an X-ray bridge between the clusters. $Suzaku$ and $XMM-Newton$ observations revealed that each cluster hosts gas with moderate temperature of $kT_{1E2216.0-0401}=$4.8$\pm$0.1 keV and $kT_{1E2215.7-0404}=$5.8$\pm$0.2 keV, respectively. On the other hand, the bridge region shows a remarkably high temperature ({\it kT}=6.6$\pm$0.5 keV). Furthermore, at the position of the bridge, we detected an enhancement in the wavelet-decomposed soft-band (0.5-4.0 keV) $XMM-N…
We report the discovery of the merging cluster, RXCJ2359.3-6042, from the REFLEX II cluster survey and present our results from all three detectors combined in the imaging and spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton data. Also known as Abell 4067, this is a unique system, where a compact bullet penetrates an extended, low density cluster at redshift z=0.099 clearly seen from our follow-up XMM-Newton observation. The bullet goes right through the central region of the cluster without being disrupted and we can clearly watch the process how the bullet component is stripped of its layers outside the …
[Abriged] We discuss here the properties of the double cluster Abell 1758, at a redshift z~0.279, which shows strong evidence for merging. We analyse the optical properties of the North and South clusters of Abell 1758 based on deep imaging obtained with the CFHT archive Megaprime/Megacam camera in the g' and r' bands, covering a total region of about 1.05 x 1.16 deg^2. Our X-ray analysis is based on archive XMM-Newton images. Numerical simulations were performed using an N-body algorithm to treat the dark matter component, a semi-analytical galaxy formation model for the evolution of the gala…
We present a multi-wavelength study of galaxy populations in the core of the massive, X-ray luminous cluster XMMU J2235 at z=1.39, based on VLT and HST optical and near-infrared photometry. Luminosity functions in the z, H, and Ks bands show a faint-end slope consistent with being flat, and a characteristic magnitude M* close to passive evolution predictions of M* of local massive clusters, with a formation redshift z>2. The color-magnitude and color-mass diagrams show evidence of a tight red sequence of massive galaxies, with overall old stellar populations, generally early-type morphology, t…
We propose a method to map the temperature distribution of the hot gas in galaxy clusters that uses resolved images of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in combination with X-ray data. Application to images from the New IRAM KIDs Array (NIKA) and XMM-Newton allows us to measure and determine the spatial distribution of the gas temperature in the merging cluster MACS J0717.5+3745, at $z=0.55$. Despite the complexity of the target object, we find a good morphological agreement between the temperature maps derived from X-ray spectroscopy only -- using XMM-Newton ($T_{\rm XMM}$) and Chan…
We present the results of deep 140 ks Suzaku X-ray observations of the north-east (NE) radio relic of the merging galaxy cluster Abell2255. The temperature structure of Abell2255 is measured out to 0.9 times the virial radius (1.9 Mpc) in the NE direction for the first time. The Suzaku temperature map of the central region suggests a complex temperature distribution, which agrees with previous work. Additionally, on a larger-scale, we confirm that the temperature drops from 6 keV around the cluster center to 3 keV at the outskirts, with two discontinuities at {\it r}$\sim$5\arcmin~(450 kpc) an…
Abell 3667 is the archetype of a merging cluster with radio relics. The NW radio relic is the brightest cluster relic or halo known, and is believed to be due to a strong merger shock. We have observed the NW relic for 40 ksec of net XMM time. We observe a global decline of temperature across the relic from 6 to 1 keV, similar to the Suzaku results. Our new observations reveal a sharp change of both temperature and surface brightness near the position of the relic. The increased X-ray emission on the relic can be equivalently well described by either a thermal or nonthermal spectral model. The…
Radio relics, elongated, non-thermal, structures located at the edges of galaxy clusters, are the result of synchrotron radiation from cosmic-ray electrons accelerated by merger-driven shocks at the cluster outskirts. However, X-ray observations of such shocks in some clusters suggest that they are too weak to efficiently accelerate electrons via diffusive shock acceleration to energies required to produce the observed radio power. We examine this issue in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 3667 (A3667), which hosts a pair of radio relics. While the Northwest relic in A3667 has been well studied…
We explore the internal dynamics of Abell 2254, which has been shown to host a very clumpy and irregular radio halo. Our analysis is mainly based on redshift data for 128 galaxies acquired at the TNG. We also use new g',r',i' photometric data acquired at the INT and (V,i') photometric data available in the Subaru Archive. X-ray data from the XMM-Newton Science Archive are analyzed to study the hot gas component. We estimate the cluster redshift <z>=0.177, a high line-of-sight (LOS) velocity dispersion, sigmaV about 1350 km/s, and X-ray temperature T about 6.4 keV. Both our optical and X-ray an…
A2319 is a massive, merging galaxy cluster with a previously detected radio halo that roughly follows the X-ray emitting gas. We present the results from recent observations of A2319 at 20 cm with the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and a re-analysis of the X-ray observations from XMM-Newton, to investigate the interactions between the thermal and nonthermal components of the ICM . We confirm previous reports of an X-ray cold front, and report on the discovery of a distinct core to the radio halo, 800 kpc in extent, that is strikingly similar in morphology to the X-ray emission, and drops sharpl…
The galaxy cluster ZwCl 2341.1+0000 is a merging system at z=0.27, which hosts two radio relics and a central, faint, filamentary radio structure. The two radio relics have unusually flat integrated spectral indices of -0.49 +/- 0.18 and -0.76 +/- 0.17, values that cannot be easily reconciled with the theory of standard diffusive shock acceleration of thermal particles at weak merger shocks. We present imaging results from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the cluster, aimed to detect and characterise density discontinuities in the ICM. As expected, we detect a density discontinuity near …
We present a detailed analysis of two merging clusters, from XMM-\textit{Newton} X-ray archival data: PLCKESZ G036.7+14.9 ($z=0.15$; hereafter G036) and PLCK G292.5+22.0 ($z=0.30$; hereafter G292). We notice that the intracluster medium is heated as a result of the merger, and we find evidence for a merger shock in the region between both subcluster haloes. X-ray observations confirm that the shocks in these systems are among the hottest known in the literature. From the ICM analysis of temperature discontinuity, the Mach numbers were determined to be $M_{\rm G036}=1.3$ and $M_{\rm G292}=1.5$ …
We compare X-ray hydrostatic and weak-lensing mass estimates for a sample of 12 clusters that have been observed with both XMM-Newton and Subaru. At an over-density of Δ=500, we obtain 1-M^{X}/M^{WL}=0.01+/-0.07 for the whole sample. We also divided the sample into undisturbed and disturbed sub-samples based on quantitative X-ray morphologies using asymmetry and fluctuation parameters, obtaining 1-M^{X}/M^{WL}=0.09+/-0.06 and -0.06+/-0.12 for the undisturbed and disturbed clusters, respectively. In addition to non-thermal pressure support, there may be a competing effect associated with adiaba…
Radio relics are elongated sources related to shocks driven by galaxy cluster merger events. Although these objects are highly polarized at GHz frequencies ($\gtrsim 20\%$), high-resolution studies of their polarization properties are still lacking. We present the first high-resolution and high-sensitivity polarimetry study of the merging galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 in the 1-4 GHz frequency band. We use the $QU$-fitting approach to model the Stokes $I$, $Q$ and $U$ emission, obtaining best-fit intrinsic polarization fraction ($p_0$), intrinsic polarization angle ($χ_0$), Rotation Measure …
We present an analysis of the structures and dynamics of the merging cluster Abell~1201, which has two sloshing cold fronts around a cooling core, and an offset gas core approximately 500kpc northwest of the center. New Chandra and XMM-Newton data reveal a region of enhanced brightness east of the offset core, with breaks in surface brightness along its boundary to the north and east. This is interpreted as a tail of gas stripped from the offset core. Gas in the offset core and the tail is distinguished from other gas at the same distance from the cluster center chiefly by having higher densit…
Galaxy clusters are thought to grow hierarchically through the continuous merging and accretion of smaller structures across cosmic time. In the local Universe, these phenomena are still active in the outer regions of massive clusters ($R>R_{500}$), where the matter distribution is expected to become clumpy and asymmetric because of the presence of accreting structures. We present the XMM-Newton Cluster Outskirts Project (X-COP), which targets the outer regions of a sample of 13 massive clusters ($M_{500}>3\times10^{14}M_\odot$) in the redshift range 0.04-0.1 at uniform depth. The sample was s…
By analysing the Chandra and XMM-Newton archived data of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 3158, which was reported to possess a relatively regular, relaxed morphology in the X-ray band in previous works, we identify a bow edge-shaped discontinuity in the X-ray surface brightness distribution at about $120h_{71}^{-1}$ kpc west of the X-ray peak. This feature is found to be associated with a massive, off-centre cool gas clump, and actually forms the west boundary of the cool clump. We find that the cool gas clump is moving at a subsonic velocity of ~700 km/s toward west on the sky plane. We exclu…
A number of merging galaxy clusters show the presence of large-scale radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). These synchrotron sources are generally classified as radio haloes and radio relics. Whilst it is commonly accepted that mergers play a crucial role in the formation of radio haloes and relics, not all the merging clusters show the presence of giant diffuse radio sources and this provides important information concerning current models. The Abell 781 complex is a spectacular system composed of an apparent chain of clusters on the sky. Its main component is undergo…
We present a combined optical and X-ray analysis of the rich cluster Abell 1882 with the aim of identifying merging substructure and understanding the recent assembly history of this system. Our optical data consist of spectra drawn from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, which lends itself to this kind of detailed study thanks to its depth and high spectroscopic completeness. We use 283 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members to detect and characterize substructure. We complement the optical data with X-ray data taken with both Chandra and XMM. Our analysis reveals that A1882 har…
X-ray observations of galaxy clusters reveal a large range of morphologies with various degrees of disturbance, showing that the assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical shape which are used to determine the cluster mass from X-ray data are not always satisfied. It is therefore important for the understanding of cluster properties as well as for cosmological applications to detect and quantify substructure in X-ray images of galaxy clusters. Two promising methods to do so are power ratios and center shifts. Since these estimators can be heavily affected by Poisson noise and X-ray b…
We present the first of a sample of fossil galaxy groups with pre-existing Chandra and/or XMM-Newton X-ray observations and new or forthcoming low frequency GMRT data -- RXJ1416.4+2315 (z=0.137). Fossil galaxy groups are ideal laboratories for studying feedback mechanisms and how energy injection affects the IGM, since due to the lack of recent merging activity, we expect the IGM to be relatively pristine and affected only by any AGN activity that has occurred in the group. Our Chandra X-ray observations reveal features resembling AGN-inflated bubbles, whilst our GMRT radio data show evidence …
CIZA J2242.8+5301 is a post-core passage, binary merging cluster that hosts a large, thin, arc-like radio relic, nicknamed the `Sausage', tracing a relatively strong shock front. We perform spatially-resolved spectral fitting to the available radio data for this radio relic, using a variety of spectral ageing models, with the aim of finding a consistent set of parameters for the shock and radio plasma. We determine an injection index of $0.77^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ for the relic plasma, significantly steeper than was found before. Standard particle acceleration at the shock front implies a Mach numb…
We study the properties of chaotic motions in the intra cluster medium using a set of 20 galaxy clusters simulated with large dynamical range, using the Adaptive Mesh Refinement code ENZO (e.g. Norman et al.2007). The adopted setup allows us to study the spectral and spatial properties of turbulent motions in galaxy clusters with unprecedented detail, achieving an maximum available Reynolds number of the order of R=500-1000 for the largest eddies. The correlations between the energy of these motions in the Intra Cluster Medium and the dynamical state of the host systems are studied, and the st…
We demonstrate a novel technique for calibrating the energy scale of the XMM EPIC-pn detector, which allows us to measure bulk flows in the intracluster medium (ICM) of the Perseus and Coma clusters. The procedure uses the instrumental lines present in all observations, in particular, Cu-Ka. By studying their spatial and temporal variations, in addition to incorporating calibration observations, we refined the absolute energy scale to better than 150 km/s at the Fe-K line, a large improvement over the nominal accuracy of 550 km/s. We then mapped the bulk motions over much of the central 1200 a…
