Despite progress in understanding radio relics, there are still open questions regarding the underlying particle acceleration mechanisms. In this paper we present deep 1--4 GHz VLA observations of CIZA\,J2242.8+5301 ($z=0.1921$), a double radio relic cluster characterized by small projection on the plane of the sky. Our VLA observations reveal, for the first time, the complex morphology of the diffuse sources and the filamentary structure of the northern relic. We discover new faint diffuse radio emission extending north of the main northern relic. Our Mach number estimates for the northern and southern relics, based on the radio spectral index map obtained using the VLA observations and existing LOFAR and GMRT data, are consistent with previous radio and X-ray studies ($\mathcal{M}_{\rm RN}=2.58\pm0.17$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\rm RS}=2.10\pm0.08$). However, color-color diagrams and modelings suggest a flatter injection spectral index than the one obtained from the spectral index map, indicating that projection effects might be not entirely negligible. The southern relic consists of five "arms". Embedded in it, we find a tailed radio galaxy which seems to be connected to the relic. A spectral index flattening, where the radio tail connects to the relic, is also measured. We propose that the southern relic may trace AGN fossil electrons that are re-accelerated at a shock, with an estimated strength of $\mathcal{M}=2.4$. High-resolution mapping of other tailed radio galaxies also supports a scenario where AGN fossil electrons are revived by the merger event and could be related to the formation of some diffuse cluster radio emission.
CIZA J2242.8+5301, a merging galaxy cluster at z=0.19, hosts a double-relic system and a faint radio halo. Radio observations at frequencies ranging from a few MHz to several GHz have shown that the radio spectral index at the outer edge of the N relic corresponds to a shock of Mach number 4.6+/-1.1, under the assumptions of diffusive shock acceleration of thermal particles in the test particle regime. Here, we present results from new Chandra observations of the cluster. The Chandra surface brightness profile across the N relic only hints to a surface brightness discontinuity (<2-sigma detect…
X-ray and radio observations of CIZA J2242.8+5301 suggest that it is a major cluster merger. Despite being well studied in the X-ray, and radio, little has been presented on the cluster structure and dynamics inferred from its galaxy population. We carried out a deep (i<25) broad band imaging survey of the system with Subaru SuprimeCam (g & i bands) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (r band) as well as a comprehensive spectroscopic survey of the cluster area (505 redshifts) using Keck DEIMOS. We use this data to perform a comprehensive galaxy/redshift analysis of the system, which is the …
Cluster mergers may play a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies. Stroe et al. (2014) revealed unexpected over-densities of candidate H$α$ emitters near the ~1 Mpc-wide shock fronts of the massive (~2x10$^{15}$M$_{\odot}$) "Sausage" merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301. We used Keck/DEIMOS and WHT/AF2 to confirm 83 H$α$ emitters in and around the merging cluster. We find that cluster star-forming galaxies in the hottest X-ray gas and/or in the cluster sub-cores (away from the shock fronts) show high [SII]6716/[SII]6761 and high [SII]6716/H$α$, implying very low elec…
The giant radio relic in CIZA J2242.8+5301 is likely evidence of a Mpc sized shock in a massive merging galaxy cluster. However, the exact shock properties are still not clearly determined. In particular, the Mach number derived from the integrated radio spectrum exceeds the Mach number derived from the X-ray temperature jump by a factor of two. We present here a numerical study, aiming for a model that is consistent with the majority of observations of this galaxy cluster. We first show that in the northern shock upstream X-ray temperature and radio data are consistent with each other. We the…
CIZA J1358.9-4750 is a nearby galaxy cluster in the early phase of a major merger. The two-dimensional temperature map using XMM-Newton EPIC-PN observation confirms the existence of a high temperature region, which we call the "hot region", in the "bridge region" connecting the two clusters. The ~ 500 kpc wide region between the southeast and northwest boundaries also has higher pseudo pressure compared to the unshocked regions, suggesting the existence of two shocks. The southern shock front is clearly visible in the X-ray surface brightness image and has already been reported by Kato et al. …
Previous studies have shown that CIZA J2242.8+5301 (the 'Sausage' cluster, $z=0.192$) is a massive merging galaxy cluster that hosts a radio halo and multiple relics. In this paper we present deep, high fidelity, low-frequency images made with the LOw-Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 115.5 and 179 MHz. These images, with a noise of 140 mJy/beam and a resolution of $θ_{\text{beam}}=7.3"\times5.3"$, are an order of magnitude more sensitive and five times higher resolution than previous low-frequency images of this cluster. We combined the LOFAR data with the existing GMRT (153, 323, 608 MHz) and …
CIZA J1358.9-4750 is a nearby (z = 0.074) pair of clusters of galaxies located close to the Galactic plane. It consists of two X-Ray extended humps at north-west and south-east separated by 14 arcmin (~ 1.2 Mpc), and an X-Ray bright bridge-like structure in between. With Suzaku, the south-east hump was shown to have a temperature of 5.6 keV and the north-west one 4.6 keV. Neither humps exhibit significant central cool component. The bridge region has a temperature higher than 9 keV at the maximum, and this hot region is distributed almost orthogonal to the bridge axis in agreement with the sho…
We report on results of our upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observations for an early-stage merging galaxy cluster, CIZA J1358.9-4750 (CIZA1359), in Band-3 (300--500 MHz). We achieved the image dynamic range of $\sim 38,000$ using the direction dependent calibration and found a candidate of diffuse radio emission at 4~$σ_{rms}$ significance. The flux density of the candidate at 400~MHz, $24.04 \pm 2.48$~mJy, is significantly positive compared to noise, where its radio power, $2.40 \times 10^{24}$~W~Hz$^{-1}$, is consistent with those of typical diffuse radio sources of galaxy …
Diffuse radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is observed in a number of merging galaxy clusters. It is currently believed that in mergers a fraction of the kinetic energy is channeled into non-thermal components, such as turbulence, cosmic rays and magnetic fields, that may lead to the formation of giant synchrotron sources in the ICM. Studying merging galaxy clusters in different evolutionary phases is fundamental to understanding the origin of radio emission in the ICM. We observed the nearby galaxy cluster pair RXC J1825.3+3026 ($z\sim0.065$) and CIZA J1824.1+3029 (…
CIZA J2242.8+5301 (`Sausage') and 1RXS J0603.3+4213 (`Toothbrush') are two low-redshift ($z\sim0.2$), massive ($\sim2\times10^{15}M_\odot$), post-core passage merging clusters, which host shock waves traced by diffuse radio emission. To study their star-formation properties, we uniformly survey the `Sausage' and `Toothbrush' clusters in broad and narrow band filters and select a sample of $201$ and $463$ line emitters, down to a rest-frame equivalent width ($13$Å). We robustly separate between H$α$ and higher redshift emitters using a combination of optical multi-band (B, g, V, r, i, z) and sp…
Galaxy clusters grow by merging with other clusters, giving rise to Mpc-wide shock waves that travel at 1000-2500 km/s through the intra-cluster medium. To study the effects of merger shocks on the properties of cluster galaxies, we present the first spatially resolved spectroscopic view of 5 H$α$ emitting galaxies located in the wake of shock fronts in the low redshift (z~0.2), massive (~2$\times10^{15}$ M$_\odot$), post-core passage merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301 (nicknamed the `Sausage'). Our Gemini/GMOS-N integral field unit (IFU) observations, designed to capture H$α$ and [NII] emissi…
CIZA J2242.8+5301 ($z = 0.188$, nicknamed 'Sausage') is an extremely massive ($M_{200}\sim 2.0 \times 10^{15}M_\odot$ ), merging cluster with shock waves towards its outskirts, which was found to host numerous emission-line galaxies. We performed extremely deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope HI observations of the 'Sausage' cluster to investigate the effect of the merger and the shocks on the gas reservoirs fuelling present and future star formation (SF) in cluster members. By using spectral stacking, we find that the emission-line galaxies in the 'Sausage' cluster have, on average, as m…
We present and discuss a new catalogue of 52 compact HII regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and a newly created deep 1420 MHz (λ=20 cm) radio-continuum image of the N19 region located in the southwestern part of the SMC. The new images were created by merging 1420 MHz radio-continuum archival data from the Australian Telescope Compact Array. The majority of these detected radio compact HII regions have rather flat spectral indices which indicates, as expected, that the dominant emission mechanism is of thermal nature.
New high-resolution maps with the IRAM Interferometer of the redshifted [C II] 158 micron line and the 0.98mm dust continuum of HDF850.1 at z = 5.185 show the source to have a blueshifted northern component and a redshifted southern component, with a projected separation of 0.3 arcsec, or 2 kpc. We interpret these components as primordial galaxies that are merging to form a larger galaxy. We think it is the resulting merger-driven starburst that makes HDF850.1 an ultraluminous infrared galaxy, with an L(IR) of 1E13 Lsun. The observed line and continuum brightness temperatures and the constant …
Radio relics are elongated sources related to shocks driven by galaxy cluster merger events. Although these objects are highly polarized at GHz frequencies ($\gtrsim 20\%$), high-resolution studies of their polarization properties are still lacking. We present the first high-resolution and high-sensitivity polarimetry study of the merging galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 in the 1-4 GHz frequency band. We use the $QU$-fitting approach to model the Stokes $I$, $Q$ and $U$ emission, obtaining best-fit intrinsic polarization fraction ($p_0$), intrinsic polarization angle ($χ_0$), Rotation Measure …
CIZA J2242.8+5301 is a post-core passage, binary merging cluster that hosts a large, thin, arc-like radio relic, nicknamed the `Sausage', tracing a relatively strong shock front. We perform spatially-resolved spectral fitting to the available radio data for this radio relic, using a variety of spectral ageing models, with the aim of finding a consistent set of parameters for the shock and radio plasma. We determine an injection index of $0.77^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ for the relic plasma, significantly steeper than was found before. Standard particle acceleration at the shock front implies a Mach numb…
Galaxy clusters with signs for a recent merger show in many cases extended diffuse radio features. This emission originates from relativistic electrons which suffer synchrotron losses due to the intra-cluster magnetic field. The mechanisms of the particle acceleration and the properties of the magnetic field are still poorly understood. We search for diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. Here, we study the complex galaxy cluster Abell 2069, for which X-ray observations indicate a recent merger. We investigate the cluster's radio continuum emission by deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telesc…
Archival data from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) and the HI Zone of Avoidance (HIZOA) survey have been carefully reprocessed into a new 1.4GHz continuum map of the sky south of declination +25 deg. The wide sky coverage, high sensitivity of 40mK (limited by confusion), resolution of 14'.4 (compared to 51' for the Haslam et al. 408MHz and 35' for the Reich et al. 1.4GHz surveys), and low level of artefacts makes this map ideal for numerous studies, including: merging into interferometer maps to complete large-scale structures; decomposition of thermal and non-thermal emission components…
We present ALMA observations of a merging system at z ~ 4.57, observed as a part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Combining ALMA [CII] 158 micron and far-infrared continuum data with multi-wavelength ancillary data we find that the system is composed of two massive (Mstar >~ 10^10 Msun) star-forming galaxies experiencing a major merger (stellar mass ratio r_mass ~ 0.9) at close spatial (~13 kpc; projected) and velocity (delta_v < 300 km/s) separations, and two additional faint narrow [CII]-emitting satellites. The overall system belongs to a larger…
We present a series of new high-sensitivity and high-resolution radio-continuum images of M31 at λ=20 cm (ν=1.4 GHz). These new images were produced by merging archived 20 cm radio-continuum observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. Images presented here are sensitive to rms=60 μJy and feature high angular resolution (<10"). A complete sample of discrete radio sources have been catalogued and analysed across 17 individual VLA projects. We identified a total of 864 unique discrete radio sources across the field of M31. One of the most prominent regions in M31 is the ring feature f…
We report the results of high-resolution subpixel imaging of the hard continuum and Fe Kα line of the Compton Thick (CT) Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) ESO 428-G014, observed with Chandra ACIS. While the 3-4 keV emission is dominated by an extended component, a single nuclear point source is prominent in the 4-6 keV range. Instead, two peaks of similar intensity, separated by ~36 pc in projection on the plane of the sky are detected in the Fe Kα emission. The SE knot could be marginally associated with the heavily obscured hard continuum source. We discuss four possible interpretations of the n…
We present the highest resolution --- 15 pc (0.03'') --- ALMA $^{12}$CO(2-1) line emission and 1.3mm continuum maps, tracers of the molecular gas and dust, respectively, in the nearby merging galaxy system NGC 6240, that hosts two supermassive black holes growing simultaneously. These observations provide an excellent spatial match to existing Hubble optical and near-infrared observations of this system. A significant molecular gas mass, $\sim$9$\times$10$^9$M$_\odot$, is located in between the two nuclei, forming a clumpy stream kinematically dominated by turbulence, rather than a smooth rota…
We used multi-wavelength analysis of the newly observed molecular gas (12CO and 13CO (1-0)) with interferometer CARMA and archival star formation tracers to constrain the interaction, merging, and star formation history of an off-center minor merger, a three-spiral barred galaxy NGC 5430 and its satellite embedded in the bar. Morphology of the molecular gas in the bar of NGC 5430 shows minimal signs of recent interactions in our resolution. The apparent morphological remnant of the past galaxy interaction is an asymmetric spiral arm, containing more molecular gas and exhibiting higher star for…
Based on the two epochs EVN archive data from OH line observations of IIZw 096, we confirm that the high-resolution OH emission in this source mainly comes from two spots (OH1 and OH2) of comp D1 of this merging system. We found no significant variations in the OH line emission. The OH 1665 MHz line emission is detected at about 6 $σ$ level in the OH1 region by combining two epoch EVN observations. We found that the comp D1 shows the brightest CO, HCO+ line emission, as well as multi-band radio continuum emission. The environment around D1 shows no clear velocity structure associated with circ…
The brightest 500$\,μ$m source in the XMM field, HXMM01, is a rare merger of luminous starburst galaxies at $z=2.3$ with a dust-obscured star-formation rate of 2,000$\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. Here we present high-resolution spectroscopic observations of HXMM01 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detect line emission from ${\rm CO\,{\it J}=7\to6}$, [C I]$\,{{^3P_2}\to{^3P_1}}$, and p-${\rm H_{2}O}\,{2_{11}}\to{2_{02}}$ and continuum emission at $230\,$GHz. At a spatial resolution of 0.2" and a spectral resolution of 40$\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, the source is resolved in…
We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) observations of SDSS J0924+0219, a z = 1.524 radio-quiet lensed quasar with an intrinsic radio flux density of about 3 micro-Jy. The four lensed images are clearly detected in the radio continuum and the CO(5-4) line, whose centroid is at z = 1.5254 +/- 0.0001, with a marginal detection in the submillimetre continuum. The molecular gas displays ordered motion, in a structure approximately 1--2.5 kpc in physical extent, with typical velocities of 50-100 km/s. Our results are consistent with the radio emis…
Low mass galaxy cluster systems and groups play an essential role in upcoming cosmological studies such as those to be carried out with eROSITA. Though the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and merging processes are of special importance to quantify biases like selection effects or deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium, they are poorly understood on the galaxy group scale. We present an analysis of recent deep Chandra and XMM-Newton integrations of NGC741, which provides an excellent example of a group with multiple concurrent phenomena: both an old central radio galaxy and a spectacu…
We present a recent ALMA observation of the CO(1-0) line emission in the central galaxy of the Zw 3146 galaxy cluster ($z=0.2906$). We also present updated X-ray cavity measurements from archival Chandra observations. The $5\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ supply of molecular gas, which is confined to the central 4 kpc, is marginally resolved into three extensions that are reminiscent of the filaments observed in similar systems. No velocity structure that would be indicative of ordered motion is observed. The three molecular extensions all trail X-ray cavities, and are potentially formed from the c…
We report the results of a visual inspection of images of the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) in search of extended radio galaxies (ERG) that reach or exceed linear sizes on the order of one Megaparsec. We searched a contiguous area of 1059deg$^2$ from RA$_{\rm J}$=20$^h$20$^m$ to 06$^h$20$^m$, and $-50^{\circ}<\rm{Dec}_J<-40^{\circ}$, which is covered by deep multi-band optical images of the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and in which previously only three ERGs larger than 1Mpc had been reported. For over 1800 radio galaxy candidates inspected, our search in optical and infrared images resulte…
We have constructed a far-ultraviolet (FUV) continuum map of the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus complex, one of the largest local associations of dark clouds, by merging the two data sets of GALEX and FIMS, which made observations at similar wavelengths. The FUV intensity varies significantly across the whole region, but the diffuse FUV continuum is dominated by dust scattering of stellar photons. A diffuse FUV background of $\sim$1000 CU is observed, part of which may be attributable to the scattered photons of foreground FUV light, located in front of the thick clouds. The fluorescent emission of mol…
The Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emission line has been ubiquitously used to confirm and study high redshift galaxies. We report on the line morphology as seen in the 2D spectra from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey in a sample of 914 Ly$α$ emitters from a parent sample of 4192 star-forming galaxies at $2<z_\mathrm{spec}\lesssim6$. The study of the spatial extent of Ly$α$ emission provides insight into the escape of Ly$α$ photons from galaxies. We classify the line emission as either non-existent, coincident, projected spatial offset, or extended with respect to the observed 2D UV continuum emission. The line…
In the hierarchical structure formation model, galaxies grow through various merging events. Numerical simulations indicate that the mergers can enhance the activity of the central supermassive black holes in the galaxies. Pfeifle et al. (2019a) identified a system of three interacting galaxies, J0849$+$1114, and provided multiwavelength evidence of all three galaxies containing active galactic nuclei. The system has substantial radio emission, and with high-resolution radio interferometric observation we aimed to investigate its origin, whether it is related to star formation or to one or mor…
