Let f be a classical holomorphic cusp form for SL_2(Z) of weight k which is a normalized eigenfunction for the Hecke algebra, and let λ(n) be its eigenvalues. In this paper we study "shifted convolution sums" of the eigenvalues λ(n) after averaging over many shifts h and obtain asymptotic estimates. The result is somewhat surprising: one encounters a transition region depending on the ratio of the square of the length of the average over h to the length of the shifted convolution sum. The phenomenon is similar to that encountered by Conrey, Farmer and Soundararajan in their 2000 paper Transition Mean Values of Real Characters, and the connection of both results to Eisenstein series and multiple Dirichlet series is discussed.
Shifted convolution sums play a prominent rôle in analytic number theory. We investigate pointwise bounds, mean-square bounds, and average bounds for shifted convolution sums for Hecke eigenforms.
The Fourier coefficient of a second order Eisenstein series is described as a shifted convolution sum. This description is used to obtain the spectral decomposition of and estimates for the shifted convolution sum.
We study the behavior of the shifted convolution sum involving fourth power of the Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms with a weight function to be the $k$-full kernel function for any fixed integer $k\geq2$.
In this work we provide a meromorphic continuation in three complex variables of two types of triple shifted convolution sums of Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms. The foundations of this construction are based in the continuation of the spectral expansion of a special truncated Poincaré series recently developed by Jeffrey Hoffstein. As a result we are able to produce previously unstudied and nontrivial asymptotics of truncated shifted sums which we expect to correspond to off-diagonal terms in the third moment of automorphic L-functions.
For integer $q$, let $χ$ be a primitive multiplicative character$\pmod q.$ For integer $a$ coprime to $q$, we obtain a new bound for the sums $$\sum_{n\le N}Λ(n)χ(n+a),$$ where $Λ(n)$ is the von Mangoldt function. This bound improves and extends the range of a result of Friedlander, Gong and Shparlinski
We study the average size of shifted convolution summation terms related to the problem of Quantum Unique Ergodicity on ${\rm SL}_2 (\mathbbm{Z})\backslash \mathbbm{H}$. Establishing an upper-bound sieve method for handling such sums, we achieve an unconditional result which suggests that the average size of the summation terms should be sufficient in application to Quantum Unique Ergodicity. In other words, cancellations among the summation terms, although welcomed, may not be required. Furthermore, the sieve method may be applied to shifted sums of other multiplicative functions with similar…
Let $F$ be a number field and $π$ an irreducible cuspidal representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2}(F)\backslash\mathrm{GL}_{2}(\mathbf{A})$ with unitary central character. Then the bound $$L(1/2,π\otimesχ)\ll_{F,π,χ_{\infty},\varepsilon} \mathcal{N}(\frak{q})^{3/8+θ/4+\varepsilon}$$ holds for any Hecke character $χ$ of conductor $\frak{q}$, where $θ$ is any constant towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture ($θ=7/64$ is admissible). The proof is based on a spectral decomposition of shifted convolution sums.
For two arithmetical functions $f$ and $g$, we study the convolution sum of the form $\sum_{n \le N} f(n) g(n+h)$ in the context of its asymptotic formula with explicit error terms. Here we introduce the concept of finite Ramanujan expansion of an arithmetical function and extend our earlier works in this setup.
Let $f$ be a cuspidal newform (holomorphic or Maass) of arbitrary level and nebentypus and denote by $λ_f(n)$ its $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue. Let $$ r(n)=\#\left\{(n_1,n_2)\in \mathbb{Z}^2:n_1^2+n_2^2=n\right\}. $$ In this paper, we study the shifted convolution sum $$ \mathcal{S}_h(X)=\sum_{n\leq X}λ_f(n+h)r(n), \qquad 1\leq h\leq X, $$ and establish uniform bounds with respect to the shift $h$ for $\mathcal{S}_h(X)$.
For the shifted convolution sum $$ D_h(X)=\sum_{m=1}^\inftyλ_1(1,m)λ_2(m+h)V(\frac{m}{X}) $$ where $λ_1(1,m)$ are the Fourier coefficients of a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ Maass form $π_1$, and $λ_2(m)$ are those of a $SL(2,\mathbb Z)$ Maass or holomorphic form $π_2$, and $1\leq |h| \ll X^{1+\varepsilon}$, we establish the bound $$ D_h(X)\ll_{π_1,π_2,\varepsilon} X^{1-(1/20)+\varepsilon}. $$ The bound is uniform with respect to the shift $h$.
We continue our study of convolution sums of two arithmetical functions $f$ and $g$, of the form $\sum_{n \le N} f(n) g(n+h)$, in the context of heuristic asymptotic formulæ. Here, the integer $h\ge 0$ is called, as usual, the {\it shift} of the convolution sum. We deepen the study of finite Ramanujan expansions of general $f,g$ for the purpose of studying their convolution sum. Also, we introduce another kind of Ramanujan expansion for the convolution sum of $f$ and $g$, namely in terms of its shift $h$ and we compare this \lq \lq shifted Ramanujan expansion\rq \rq, with our previous finite e…
Let $A_f(1,n)$ be the normalized Fourier coefficients of a Hecke-Maass cusp form $f$ for $SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $$ r_3(n)=\#\left\{(n_1,n_2,n_3)\in \mathbb{Z}^3:n_1^2+n_2^2+n_3^2=n\right\}. $$ Let $1\leq h\leq X$ and $ϕ(x)$ be a smooth function compactly supported on $[1/2,1]$. It is shown that $$ \sum_{n\geq 1}A_f(1,n+h)r_3(n)ϕ\left(\frac{n}{X}\right) \ll_{f,\varepsilon} X^{\frac{3}{2}-\frac{1}{8}+\varepsilon} $$ uniformly with respect to the shift $h$.
We consider the numbers $\mathcal{B}_{r,s} = (\mathbf{B}+1)^r \mathbf{B}^s$ (in umbral notation $\mathbf{B}^n = \mathbf{B}_n$ with the Bernoulli numbers) that have a well-known reciprocity relation, which is frequently found in the literature and goes back to the 19th century. In a recent paper, self-reciprocal Bernoulli polynomials, whose coefficients are related to these numbers, appeared in the context of power sums and the so-called Faulhaber polynomials. The numbers $\mathcal{B}_{r,s}$ can be recursively expressed by iterated sums and differences, so it is not obvious that these numbers d…
Let $f(n)$ be a multiplicative function with $|f(n)|\leq 1, q$ be a prime number and $a$ be an integer with $(a, q)=1, χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo $q$. Let $\varepsilon$ be a sufficiently small positive constant, $A$ be a large constant, $q^{\frac12+\varepsilon}\ll N\ll q^A$. In this paper, we shall prove that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q} $$ and that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a_1)\cdotsχ(n+a_t)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q}, $$ where $t\geq 2, a_1, \ldots, a_t$ are distinct integers modulo $q$.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain asymptotics of shifted sums of Hecke eigenvalue squares on average. We show that for $X^{\frac{2}{3}+ε} < H <X^{1-ε},$ there are constants $B_{h}$ such that $$ \sum_{X\leq n \leq 2X} λ_{f}(n)^{2}λ_{f}(n+h)^{2}-B_{h}X=O_{f,A,ε}\big(X (\log X)^{-A}\big)$$ for all but $O_{f,A,ε}\big(H(\log X)^{-3A}\big)$ integers $h \in [1,H]$ where $\{λ_{f}(n)\}_{n\geq1}$ are normalized Hecke eigenvalues of a fixed holomorphic cusp form $f.$ Our method is based on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. We divide the minor arcs into two parts $m_{1}$ and $m_{2}.$ In order to tr…
Let $A_f(1,n)$ be the normalized Fourier coefficients of a $GL(3)$ Maass cusp form $f$ and let $a_g(n)$ be the normalized Fourier coefficients of a $GL(2)$ cusp form $g$. Let $λ(n)$ be either $A_f(1,n)$ or the triple divisor function $d_3(n)$. It is proved that for any $ε>0$, any integer $r\geq 1$ and $r^{5/2}X^{1/4+7δ/2}\leq H\leq X$ with $δ>0$, $$ \frac{1}{H}\sum_{h\geq 1}W\left(\frac{h}{H}\right) \sum_{n\geq 1}λ(n)a_g(rn+h)V\left(\frac{n}{X}\right)\ll X^{1-δ+ε}, $$ where $V$ and $W$ are smooth compactly supported functions, and the implied constants depend only on the associated forms and $…
In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper begins the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^3$ with divisor functions as coefficients.
Let $f(n)$ be a multiplicative function satisfying $|f(n)|\leq 1$, $q$ $(\leq N^2)$ be a prime number and $a$ be an integer with $(a,\,q)=1$, $χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo $q$. In this paper, we shall prove that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a)\ll {N\over q^{1\over 4}}\log\log(6N)+q^{1\over 4}N^{1\over 2}\log(6N)+{N\over \sqrt{\log\log(6N)}}. $$ We shall also prove that \begin{align*} &\sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a_1)\cdotsχ(n+a_t)\ll {N\over q^{1\over 4}}\log\log(6N)\\ &\quad+q^{1\over 4}N^{1\over 2}\log(6N)+{N\over \sqrt{\log\log(6N)}}, \end{align*} where $t\geq 2$, $a_1,\,\cdots,\,…
In this series of papers we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper completes the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of arbitrary length with divisor functions as coefficients.
We develop new closed form representations of sums of (n + α)th shifted harmonic numbers and reciprocal binomial coefficients in terms of αth shifted harmonic numbers. Some interesting new consequences and illustrative examples are considered.
Using explicit constructions of the Weierstrass mock modular form, we offer a closed formula for generating the values of shifted convolution $L$-values for certain elliptic curves that can be computed to arbitrary precision. These identities provide a surprising relation between weight $2$ newforms and shifted convolution $L$-values.
In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper is concerned with the precise input of the conjectural formula for the classical shifted convolution problem for divisor sums so as to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^2$ with divisor functions as coefficients.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution of the divisor functions $d_3(n)$ and $d(n)$, which is uniform in the shift parameter and which has a power-saving error term. The method is also applied to give analogous estimates for the shifted convolution of $d_3(n)$ and Fourier coefficents of holomorphic cusp forms. These asymptotics improve previous results obtained by several different authors.
We define, and obtain the meromorphic continuation of, shifted Rankin-Selberg convolutions in one and two variables. As sample applications, this continuation is used to obtain estimates for single and double shifted sums and a Burgess-type bound for $L$-series associated to modular forms of arbitrary central character. Further applications are furnished by subsequent works by the authors and their colleagues.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution of the divisor functions $d_k(n)$ and $d(n)$ with $k \geq 4$, which is uniform in the shift parameter and which has a power-saving error term, improving results obtained previously by Fouvry and Tenenbaum and, more recently, by Drappeau.
We give a characterisation of the field into which quotients of values of L-functions associated to a cusp form belong. The construction involves shifted convolution series of divisor sums and to establish it we combine parts of F. Brown's technique to study multiple modular values with the properties of a double Eisentein series previously studied by the author and C. O'Sullivan.
We study a mean value of the shifted convolution problem over the Hecke eigenvalues of a fixed non-holomorphic cusp form. We attain a result also for a weighted case. Furthermore, we point out that the proof yields analogous upper bounds for the shifted convolution problem over the Fourier coefficients of a fixed holomorphic cusp form in mean.
Hoffstein and Hulse defined the shifted convolution series of two cusp forms by "shifting" the usual Rankin-Selberg convolution L-series by a parameter h. We use the theory of harmonic Maass forms to study the behavior in h-aspect of certain values of these series and prove a polynomial bound as h approaches infinity. Our method relies on a result of Mertens and Ono, who showed that these values are Fourier coefficients of mixed mock modular forms.
In a recent important paper, Hoffstein and Hulse generalized the notion of Rankin-Selberg convolution $L$-functions by defining shifted convolution $L$-functions. We investigate symmetrized versions of their functions. Under certain mild conditions, we prove that the generating functions of certain special values are linear combinations of weakly holomorphic quasimodular forms and "mixed mock modular" forms.
In this paper we solve a function field analogue of classical problems in analytic number theory, concerning the auto-correlations of divisor functions, in the limit of a large finite field.
This is part II of our examination of the second and fourth moments and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations.
In this paper, we estimate the shifted convolution sum \[\sum_{n\geqslant1}λ_1(1,n)λ_2(n+h)V\Big(\frac{n}{X}\Big),\] where $V$ is a smooth function with support in $[1,2]$, $1\leqslant|h|\leqslant X$, $λ_1(1,n)$ and $λ_2(n)$ are the $n$-th Fourier coefficients of $SL(3,\mathbf{Z})$ and $SL(2,\mathbf{Z})$ Hecke-Maass cusp forms, respectively. We prove an upper bound $O(X^{\frac{21}{22}+\varepsilon})$, updating a recent result of Munshi.
We compute Fourier series expansions of weight $2$ and weight $4$ Eisenstein series at various cusps. Then we use results of these computations to give formulas for the convolution sums $ \sum_{a+p b=n}σ(a)σ(b)$, $ \sum_{p_1a+p_2 b=n}σ(a)σ(b)$ and $ \sum_{a+p_1 p_2 b=n}σ(a)σ(b)$ where $p, p_1, p_2$ are primes.
We provide a systematic method to compute arithmetic sums including some previously computed by Alaca, Alaca, Besge, Cheng, Glaisher, Huard, Lahiri, Lemire, Melfi, Ou, Ramanujan, Spearman and Williams. Our method is based on quasimodular forms. This extension of modular forms has been constructed by Kaneko andZagier.
Using the Kuznetsov trace formula, we prove a spectral decomposition for the sums of generalized Dirichlet $L$-functions. Among applications are an explicit formula relating norms of prime geodesics to moments of symmetric square $L$-functions and an asymptotic expansion for the average of central values of generalized Dirichlet $L$-functions.
In [arXiv:1504.07804], Keating, Rodgers, Roditty-Gershon and Rudnick established relationships of the mean-square of sums of the divisor function $d_k(f)$ over short intervals and over arithmetic progressions for the function field $\mathbb F_q[T]$ to certain integrals over the ensemble of unitary matrices. We consider similar problems leading to distributions over the ensemble of symplectic matrices. We also consider analogous questions involving convolutions of the von Mangoldt function.
We provide estimates for sums of the form \[\left|\sum_{a\in A}\sum_{b\in B}\sum_{c\in C}χ(a+b+c)\right|\] and \[\left|\sum_{a\in A}\sum_{b\in B}\sum_{c\in C}\sum_{d\in D}χ(a+b+cd)\right|\] when $A,B,C,D\subset \mathbb F_p$, the field with $p$ elements and $χ$ is a non-trivial multiplicative character modulo $p$.
