In this note we answer a question of Parimala's, showing that fields with finite $u$ invariant have bounds on the symbol lengths in their $μ_2$ cohomology in all degrees.
We use constructions of versal cohomology classes based on a new notion of "presentable functors," to describe a relationship between the problems of bounding symbol length in cohomology and of finding the minimal degree of a splitting field. The constructions involved are then also used to describe generic splitting varieties for degree 2 cohomology with coefficients in a commutative algebraic group of multiplicative type.
Let $R$ be a polynomial or power series ring over a field $k$. We study the length of local cohomology modules $H^j_I(R)$ in the category of $D$-modules and $F$-modules. We show that the $D$-module length of $H^j_I(R)$ is bounded by a polynomial in the degree of the generators of $I$. In characteristic $p>0$ we obtain upper and lower bounds on the $F$-module length in terms of the dimensions of Frobenius stable parts and the number of special primes of local cohomology modules of $R/I$. The obtained upper bound is sharp if $R/I$ is an isolated singularity, and the lower bound is sharp when $R/…
The main purpose of this paper is the geometric construction, and the analysis of the formalism of elliptic Bloch groups. In the setting of absolute cohomology, we obtain a generalization of Beilinson's Eisenstein symbol to divisors of an elliptic curve, whose support is not necessarily torsion. For motivic cohomology, such a generalization is obtained in low degrees. Our main result shows that the Eisenstein symbol can be defined in all degrees if the elliptic analogue of the Beilinson-Soule vanishing conjecture holds.
Let k be a field of characteristic 0, R = k[x_1, ..., x_d] be a polynomial ring, and m its maximal homogeneous ideal. Let I be a homogeneous ideal in R. In this paper we investigate asymptotic behaviour of the quotient between the length of local cohomology group H^0_m(R/I^n) and n^d. We show that this quantity always has a limit as n goes to infinity. We also give an example for which the limit is irrational; in particular, this proves that the length of H^0_m(R/I^n) is not asymptotically a polynomial in n.
Let $D$ be the ring of Grothendieck differential operators of the ring $R$ of polynomials in $d\geq3$ variables with coefficients in a perfect field of positive characteristic $p.$ We compute the $D$-module length of the first local cohomology module $H^1_f(R)$ of $R$ with respect to an irreducible polynomial $f$ with an isolated singularity, for $p$ large enough. The expression we give is in terms of the Frobenius action on the top coherent cohomology of the structure sheaf of the exceptional divisor of a resolution of the singularity. Our proof rests on a tight closure computation due to Har…
Let $R$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables with coefficients in a field $K$ of characteristic zero. Let $D_n$ be the $n$-th Weyl algebra over $K$. Suppose that $f \in R$ defines a hyperplane arrangement in the affine space $K^n$. Then the length and the multiplicity of the 1st local cohomology group $H^1_{(f)}(R)$ as left $D_n$-module coincide and are explicitly expressed in terms of the Poincaré polynomial or the Möbius function of the arrangement.
Let $\mathcal A$ be a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb C^n$. We show that the number of decomposition factors as a perverse sheaf of the direct image $Rj_*\mathbb C_U $ of the constant sheaf on the complement $U$ to the arrangement is given by the Poincaré polynomial of the arrangement. Furthermore we describe the composition factors of $Rj_*\mathbb C_U $ as certain local cohomology sheaves and give their multiplicity.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ with irrelevant ideal $\frak m$ and dimension $d$. Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in $R$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the length of the modules $H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)$ for $n\gg 0$. We show that for a fixed number $α\in \mathbb Z$, $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)_{\geq -αn})}{n^d}<\infty.$ Combining this with recent strong vanishing results gives that $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}{R/I^n})}{n^d}<\infty$ in many situations. We also establish that the actual limit exists and is rational for…
This is is a survey of applications of Fontaine's theory of p-adic representations of local fields (Phi-Gamma-modules) to Galois cohomology of local fields and explicit formulas for the Hilbert symbol in relation with two-dimensional local objects.
Local and category-theoretical entropies associated with an endomorphism of finite length (i.e., with zero-dimensional closed fiber) of a commutative Noetherian local ring are compared. Local entropy is shown to be less than or equal to category-theoretical entropy. The two entropies are shown to be equal when the ring is regular, and also for the Frobenius endomorphism of a complete local ring of positive characteristic. Furthermore, given a flat morphism of Cohen-Macaulay local rings endowed with compatible endomorphisms of finite length, it is shown that local entropy is "additive". Finally…
The aim of this paper is to define and study the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks over a site S and to furnish a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves. More precisely, our main Theorem furnishes (1) a parametrization of the equivalence classes of objects, 1-arrows, 2-arrows, and 3-arrows of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks by the cohomology groups Ext^i, and (2) a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves via extensions of Picard 2-stacks. To this end, we us…
For a proper (not necessarily smooth) variety over a finite field with q elements, Berthelot-Bloch-Esnault proved a trace formula which computes the number of rational points modulo q in terms of the Witt vector cohomology. We show the analogous formula for Witt vector cohomology of finite length. In addition, we prove a vanishing result for the compactly supported étale cohomology of a constant p-torsion sheaf on an affine Cohen-Macaulay variety in positive characteristic p.
The Khovanov-Springer variety X(n) is a certain subvariety of the variety of flags of length 2n, which has been studied from various different points of view. We give a new proof of the ring structure of the cohomology of X(n) and relate it to some interesting geometric, combinatorial and algebraic phenomena.
We interpret the GL_n equivariant cohomology of a partial flag variety of flags of length N in \C^n as the Bethe algebra of a suitable gl_N[t] module associated with the tensor power (\C^N)^{\otimes n}.

For even dimensional smooth complete intersections, of dimension at least 4, of two quadric hypersurfaces in a projective space, we study the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants by the monodromy group of its whole family. We compute the invariants of length 4 and show that, besides a special invariant, all genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants can be reconstructed from the invariants of length 4. In dimension 4, we compute the special invariant by solving a curve counting problem. We show that the generating function of genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants has a positive radius of convergence. We…
We compare the notions of essential dimension and stable cohomological dimension of a finite group G, prove that the latter is bounded by the length of any normal series with cyclic quotients for G, and show that, however, this bound is not sharp by showing that the stable cohomological dimension of the finite Heisenberg groups H_p, p any prime, is equal to two.
We define 2-gerbes bound by complexes of braided group-like stacks. We prove a classification result in terms of hypercohomology groups with values in abelian crossed squares and cones of morphisms of complexes of length 3. We give an application to the geometric construction of certain elements in Hermitian Deligne cohomology groups.
We compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of elliptic curves over the integers, localizations of the integers, finite fields of odd characteristic, and algebraically closed fields of characteristic not $2$. The methods involved include the use of the parameter space of Legendre curves and the moduli stack of curves with full (naive) level $2$ structure, the study of the descent spectral sequence in étale cohomology and the Leray spectral sequence in fppf cohomology, the computation of the group cohomology of $S_3$ in a certain integral representation, the classification of cubic Galois e…
