We present our progress report on 1+1+1 flavor QCD+QED simulation at the physical point. Calculations are carried out with 2+1 flavor QCD gauge configurations generated by the PACS-CS Collaboration. The dynamical QED effect and the up-down quark mass difference are incorporated by the reweighting technique. We also discuss some physics results.
The mass splittings in the pseudoscalar mesons are studied by combining 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations, generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaborations, and quenched, non-compact, lattice QED configurations. We extract the QED low energy constants in SU(3) partially quenched chiral perturbation theory, up to next-to-leading order, and determine the non-degenerate u, d and s quark masses. Systematic uncertainties due to chiral extrapolations are discussed. The chiral symmetry breaking of domain wall fermions on the lattice and its effect in partially quenched chiral perturbation …
We present the results of 1+1+1 flavor QCD+QED simulation at the physical point, in which the dynamical quark effects in QED and the up-down quark mass difference are incorporated by the reweighting technique. The physical quark masses together with the lattice spacing are determined with $m_{π^+}$, $m_{K^+}$, $m_{K^0}$ and $m_{Ω^-}$ as physical inputs. Calculations are carried out using a set of 2+1 flavor QCD configurations near the physical point generated by the non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action and the Iwasaki gauge action at $β=1.9$ on a $32^3\times 64$ lattice. We e…
We simulate four flavor noncompact lattice QED using the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm on $10^4$ and $16^4$ lattices. Measurements of the monopole susceptibility and the percolation order parameter indicate a transition at $β= {1/e^2} = .205(5)$ with critical behavior in the universality class of four dimensional percolation. We present accurate chiral condensate measurements and monitor finite size effects carefully. The chiral condensate data supports the existence of a power-law transition at $β= .205$ in the same universality class as the chiral transition in the two flavor model. The resul…
The exciting possibility of direct observation of QCD instantons in heavy-ion collisions has recently been proposed by Kharzeev. The underlying phenomenon, known as the chiral magnetic effect, may have been observed recently at RHIC, and a first principles calculation is needed to confirm and understand the results. The chiral magnetic effect is thought to be visible in the symmetric phase, at temperatures above the QCD critical temperature, and in the presence of an external magnetic field. We report on first 2+1 flavor, domain wall fermion, QCD+QED dynamical simulations above the critical te…
We consider multi-flavor massless $(1+1)$-dimensional QED with chemical potentials at finite spatial length and the zero-temperature limit. Its sign problem is solved using the mean-field calculation with complex saddle points.
Electromagnetic effects play an important role in many phenomena such as isospin-symmetry breaking in the hadron spectrum and the hadronic contributions to g-2. We have generalized the MILC QCD code to include the electromagnetic field. In this work, we focus on simulations including charged sea quarks using the RHMC algorithm. We show details of the dynamical QCD+QED simulation algorithm with compact QED. We analyze the code performance and results for hadron-spectrum observables.
We present a method to couple finite-volume QCD to infinite-volume QED by an appropriate twist-averaging procedure. We demonstrate the prescription numerically for the leading-order hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the electro-magnetic pion mass splitting.
We study condensation in two-flavored, scalar QED with non-degenerate masses at finite chemical potential. The conventional formulation of the theory has a sign problem at finite density which can be solved using an exact reformulation of the theory in terms of dual variables. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation in the dual representation and observe a condensation at a critical chemical potential $μ_c$. After determining the low-energy spectrum of the theory we try to establish a connection between $μ_c$ and the mass of the lightest excitation of the system, which are naively expected to be e…
We present two novelties in our analysis of fully dynamical QCD+QED ensembles with C* boundary conditions. The first one is the explicit computation of the sign of the Pfaffian. We present an algorithm that provides a significant speedup compared to traditional methods. The second one is a reweighting of the mass in the context of the RHMC. We have tested the techniques on both pure QCD and QCD+QED ensembles with pions at $m_{π^\pm}\approx400$ MeV, a lattice spacing of $a\approx0.05$ fm, a fine-structure constant of $α_{\mathrm{R}}=0$ and $0.04$.
Inclusion of QED in lattice QCD calculations can lead to power-law volume artifacts as a consequence of the long-range nature of the interaction. Such artifacts must be removed by extrapolation in order to attain reliable infinite volume estimates of observables and quantities derived from them. As an alternative to this methodology, we consider the use of a photon mass term as an infrared regulator for QCD+QED, and explore the viability of its use in determining hadron mass shifts and splittings.
We report progress on calculating the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from the disconnected hadronic diagrams with light and strange quarks and the valence QED contribution to the connected diagrams. The lattice QCD calculations use the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation. The gauge configurations were generated by the MILC Collaboration with four flavors of HISQ sea quarks with physical sea-quark masses.
We study the scalar and pseudoscalar condensations and the eta^prime meson correlators of the two-flavor massive Schwinger model in the non-zero theta vacuum. Exploiting our new method which was developed to investigate topological effects in the previous work, we find that the pseudoscalar condensation is non-zero and there exists a long-range correlation of the eta^prime meson. This phenomenon is well described by the clustering property. We also find that even in theta=0 case the cancellation of the long-range correlation is nontrivial and requires accurate contributions from higher topolog…
We consider the lattice field theory involving two flavors of staggered quarks which interact with $U_A(1)$ gauge fields in the strong coupling limit. For massless quarks, this theory has an $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2) \times U_A(1)$ symmetry. We show explicitly how pions emerge through the phenomena of confinement in this theory. We also show how one can incorporate the physics of the anomaly in this theory. Thus, our approach is a good pedagogical tool to explain how pions arise in real QCD. Another advantage of our approach is that we can easily design efficient cluster algorithms to compute a v…
We present exploratory results from dynamical simulations of QCD in isolation, as well as QCD coupled to QED, with C* boundary conditions. In finite volume, the use of C* boundary conditions allows for a gauge invariant and local formulation of QED without zero modes. In particular we show that the simulations reproduce known results and that masses of charged mesons can be extracted in a completely gauge invariant way. For the simulations we use a modified version of the HiRep code. The primary features of the simulation code are presented and we discuss some details regarding the implementat…
There are plausibility arguments that QED in three dimensions has a critical number of flavors of massless two-component fermions, below which scale invariance is broken by the presence of bilinear condensate. We present numerical evidences from our lattice simulations using dynamical overlap as well as Wilson-Dirac fermions for the absence of bilinear condensate for any even number of flavors of two-component fermions. Instead, we find evidences for the scale-invariant nature of three-dimensional QED.
Accounting for isospin-breaking corrections is critical for achieving subpercent precision in lattice computations of hadronic observables. A way to include QED and strong-isospin-breaking corrections in lattice QCD calculations is to impose C$^\star$ boundary conditions in space. Here, we demonstrate the computation of a selection of meson and baryon masses on two QCD and five QCD+QED gauge ensembles in this setup, which preserves locality, gauge and translational invariance all through the calculation. The generation of the gauge ensembles is performed for two volumes, and three different va…
In order to model pions of two-flavor QCD we consider a lattice field theory involving two flavors of staggered quarks interacting strongly with U(1) gauge fields. For massless quarks, this theory has an $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2) \times U_A(1)$ symmetry. By adding a four-fermion term we can break the U_A(1) symmetry and thus incorporate the physics of the QCD anomaly. We can also tune the pion decay constant F, to be small compared to the lattice cutoff by starting with an extra fictitious dimension, thus allowing us to model low energy pion physics in a setting similar to lattice QCD from first …
We present the open-source package openQ*D-1.0, which has been primarily, but not uniquely, designed to perform lattice simulations of QCD+QED and QCD, with and without C* boundary conditions, and O(a) improved Wilson fermions. The use of C* boundary conditions in the spatial direction allows for a local and gauge-invariant formulation of QCD+QED in finite volume, and provides a theoretically clean setup to calculate isospin-breaking and radiative corrections to hadronic observables from first principles. The openQ*D code is based on openQCD-1.6 and NSPT-1.4. In particular it inherits from ope…
We report on a calculation of the effects of isospin breaking in Lattice QCD+QED. This involves using Chiral Perturbation Theory with Electromagnetic corrections to find the renormalized, non-degenerate, light quark masses. The calculations are carried out on QCD ensembles generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations using Domain Wall Fermions and the Iwasaki and Iwasaki+DSDR Gauge Actions with unitary pion masses down to 170 MeV. Non-compact QED is treated in the quenched approximation. The simulations use a $32^3$ lattice size with $a^{-1}=2.28(3)$ GeV (Iwasaki) and 1.37(1) (Iwasaki+DSDR). …
We present a novel strategy to renormalize lattice operators in QCD+QED, including first order QED corrections to the non-perturbative evaluation of QCD renormalization constants. Our procedure takes systematically into account the mixed non-factorizable QCD+QED effects which were neglected in previous calculations, thus significantly reducing the systematic uncertainty on renormalization corrections. The procedure is presented here in the RI'-MOM scheme, but it can be applied to other schemes (e.g. RI-SMOM) with appropriate changes. We discuss the application of this strategy to the calculati…
At the precision reached in current lattice QCD calculations, electromagnetic effects are becoming numerically relevant. Here, electromagnetic effects are included by superimposing $\mathrm{U}(1)$ degrees of freedom on $N_f = 2+1$ QCD configurations from the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal Collaboration. We present preliminary results for the electromagnetic corrections to light pseudoscalars mesons masses and discuss some of the associated systematic errors.
Using the infinite-volume photon propagator, we developed a method which allows us to calculate electromagnetic corrections to stable hadron masses with only exponentially suppressed finite-volume effects. The key idea is that the infinite volume hadronic current-current correlation function with large time separation between the two currents can be reconstructed by its value at modest time separation, which can be evaluated in finite volume with only exponentially suppressed errors. This approach can be extended to other possible applications such as QED corrections to (semi-)leptonic decays …
In this paper we discuss one-dimensional models reproducing some features of quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics at nonzero density and temperature. Since a severe sign problem makes a numerical treatment of QED and QCD at high density difficult, such models help to explore various effects peculiar to the full theory. Studying them gives insights into the large density behavior of the Polyakov loop by taking both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom into account, although in one dimension only the implementation of a global gauge symmetry is possible. For these models we eva…
We propose a scheme of lattice twisted-mass fermion regularization which is particularly convenient for application to isospin breaking (IB) QCD and QED calculations, based in particular on the so called RM123 approach, in which the IB terms of the action are treated as a perturbation. The main, practical advantage of this scheme is that it allows the calculation of IB effects on some mesonic observables, like e.g. the pi+ - pi0 mass splitting, using lattice correlation functions in which the quark and antiquark fields in the meson are regularized with opposite values of the Wilson parameter r…
We solve, analytically and numerically, a gap equation in parity invariant QED_3 in the presence of an infrared cutoff μand derive an expression for the critical fermion number N_c as a function of μ. We argue that this dependence of N_c on the infrared scale might solve the discrepancy between continuum Schwinger-Dyson equations studies and lattice simulations of QED_3.
The openQ*D code for the simulation of QCD+QED with C$^\star$ boundary conditions is presented. This code is based on openQCD-1.6, from which it inherits the core features that ensure its efficiency: the locally-deflated SAP-preconditioned GCR solver, the twisted-mass frequency splitting of the fermion action, the multilevel integrator, the 4th order OMF integrator, the SSE/AVX intrinsics, etc. The photon field is treated as fully dynamical and C$^\star$ boundary conditions can be chosen in the spatial directions. We discuss the main features of openQ*D, and we show basic test results and perf…
We consider multi-flavor QED on a finite lattice at a finite chemical potential and show that the partition function only depends on the variables, $(\frac{μ_i}{q_i} -\frac{μ_1}{q_1})$, for $i=2,...$, where $q_i$, $i=1...$ are integer valued charges of the various flavors and $μ_i$, $i=1...$ are the dimensional chemical potentials of the various flavors.
The concept of simulating a variant of QCD with sea quarks which interact with the gluon configuration only via global gluonic quantities like $\int F\tilde F dx$ and $\int FF dx$ is tested for the case of the massive 2-flavour Schwinger model. It is found to amount to an importance sampling method which generates -at essentially the costs of a quenched run- an ensemble in between a full and a quenched one, thus providing a competitive alternative to the quenched approximation.
We report a new analysis of the isospin splittings within the decuplet baryon spectrum. Our numerical results are based upon five ensembles of dynamical QCD+QED lattices. The analysis is carried out within a flavour-breaking expansion which encodes the effects of breaking the quark masses and electromagnetic charges away from an approximate SU(3) symmetric point. The results display total isospin splittings within the approximate SU(2) multiplets that are compatible with phenomenological estimates. Further, new insight is gained into these splittings by separating the contributions arising fro…
We show that maximally twisted mass fermions can be employed to regularize on the lattice the fully unquenched QCD+QED theory with vanishing $θ$-term. We discuss how the critical mass of the up and down quarks can be conveniently determined beyond the electroquenched approximation by imposing that certain symmetries of continuum QCD+QED, which are broken by Wilson terms, get restored in the continuum limit. A mixed action setup is outlined that allows to extend beyond the electroquenched approximation the computation (with only O($a^2$) artifacts) of the leading isospin breaking corrections to…
We use lattice regularization to study the flow of the flavor-triplet fermion current central charge $C^f_J$ from its free field value in the ultraviolet limit to its conformal value in the infrared limit of the parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with two flavors of two-component fermions. The dependence of $C^f_J$ on the scale is weak with a tendency to be below the free field value at intermediate distances. Our numerical data suggests that the flavor-triplet fermion current and the topological current correlators become degenerate within numerical errors in the infra-red limit, thereby …
We discuss the QCD critical point at finite density through the study of many flavor QCD, in which two light flavors and Nf massive flavors exist. Performing simulations of QCD with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions, we calculate probability distribution functions of many flavor QCD at finite temperature and density. The dynamical effects of massive flavors and the chemical potential are added using the reweighting technique. From the shape of the distribution functions, we determine the critical surface separating the first order transition and crossover regions in the parameter space o…
In these proceedings we present preliminary results for the masses of the proton, neutron and $Ω^-$ baryons obtained from QCD+QED lattice simulations performed with four dynamical quarks using C$^*$ boundary conditions. These results are part of the ongoing effort of the RC${}^*$ collaboration discussed in the companion proceedings, and have been obtained on a single ensemble in which the renormalised electromagnetic coupling is $α_{\text{em}}\sim 0.04$, the physical volume is $L\sim 1.7$ fm and the masses of the four dynamical quarks have been tuned at the $U$--spin symmetric point $m_d=m_s$.…
We perform lattice numerical simulations to study the phase transition of QCD at finite temperature to clarify the nature of the transition of massless two flavor QCD. We investigate QCD with two light and Nf heavy quarks instead of two-flavor QCD, and focus on the light quark mass dependence of the critical heavy mass, below which the transition is of first order. The heavy quarks are incorporated into two flavor configurations in the form of the hopping parameter expansion through the reweighting technique. The nature of the transition is identified by the shape of the constraint effective p…
The Schwinger model (QED_2) with N flavors of massive fermions on a circle of circumference L, or equivalently at finite temperature T, is reduced to a quantum mechanical system of N-1 degrees of freedom. With degenerate fermion masses (m) the chiral condensate develops a cusp singularity at $θ=\pm π$ in the limit L -> $\infty$ or T -> 0, which is removed by a large asymmetry in the fermion masses. Physical quantities sensitively depend on the parameter mL or m/T, and the m -> 0 and L -> $\infty$ (or T -> 0) limits do not commute. A detailed analysis is given for N=3.
The effect of sea quark electromagnetic charge on meson masses is investigated, and first results for full QED+QCD low-energy constants are presented. The electromagnetic charge for sea quarks is incorporated in quenched QED+full QCD lattice simulations by a reweighting method. The reweighting factor, which connects quenched and unquenched QED, is estimated using a stochastic method on 2+1 flavor dynamical domain-wall quark ensembles.
The precision of lattice QCD calculations has been steadily improving for some time and is now approaching, or has surpassed, the 1% level for multiple quantities. At this level QED effects, i.e. the fact that quarks carry electric as well as color charge, come into play. In this report we will summarise results from the first lattice QCD+QED computations of the properties of ground-state charmonium and bottomonium mesons by the HPQCD Collaboration.
We analyze the many-flavor phase diagram of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in 2+1 (Euclidean) space-time dimensions. We compute the critical flavor number above which the theory is in the quasi-conformal massless phase. For this, we study the renormalization group fixed-point structure in the space of gauge interactions and pointlike fermionic self-interactions, the latter of which are induced dynamically by fermion-photon interactions. We find that a reliable estimate of the critical flavor number crucially relies on a careful treatment of the Fierz ambiguity in the fermionic sector. Using a F…
Hadron masses are subject to few MeV corrections arising from QED interactions, almost entirely arising from the electric charge of the valence quarks. The QED effects include both self-energy contributions and interactions between the valence quarks/anti-quarks. By combining results from different signs of the valence quark electric charge we are able to isolate the interaction term which is dominated by the Coulomb piece, $\langle α_{\mathrm{QED}}e_{q_1}e_{\overline{q}_2}/r \rangle$, in the nonrelativistic limit. We study this for $D_s$, $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ mesons, working in lattice QCD plus qu…
We consider QED on a two-dimensional Euclidean torus with $f$ flavors of massless fermions and flavor-dependent chemical potentials. The dependence of the partition function on the chemical potentials is reduced to a $(2f-2)$-dimensional theta function. At zero temperature, the system can exist in an infinite number of phases characterized by certain values of traceless number densities and separated by first-order phase transitions. Furthermore, there exist many points in the $(f-1)$-dimensional space of traceless chemical potentials where two or three phases can coexist for $f=3$ and two, th…
Lattice QCD simulations are now reaching a precision where electromagnetic corrections from QED become important. In investigating the effects of SU(3) breaking due to quark mass differences within QCD, a group-theoretical analysis of the mass dependence greatly helped us organize our results. We now do the same with electromagnetic charge effects by extending the calculations to dynamical 1+1+1 flavor QCD + QED.
We extend HPQCD's earlier $n_f=4$ lattice-QCD analysis of the ratio of $\overline{\mathrm{MSB}}$ masses of the $b$ and $c$ quark to include results from finer lattices (down to 0.03fm) and a new calculation of QED contributions to the mass ratio. We find that $\overline{m}_b(μ)/\overline{m}_c(μ)=4.586(12)$ at renormalization scale $μ=3$\,GeV. This result is nonperturbative. Combining it with HPQCD's recent lattice QCD$+$QED determination of $\overline{m}_c(3\mathrm{GeV})$ gives a new value for the $b$-quark mass: $\overline{m}_b(3\mathrm{GeV}) = 4.513(26)$GeV. The $b$-mass corresponds to $\ove…
Mixing in the $Σ^0$-$Λ^0$ system is a direct consequence of broken isospin symmetry and is a measure of both isospin-symmetry breaking as well as general SU(3)-flavour symmetry breaking. In this work we present a new scheme for calculating the extent of $Σ^0$-$Λ^0$ mixing using simulations in lattice QCD+QED and perform several extrapolations that compare well with various past determinations. Our scheme allows us to easily contrast the QCD-only mixing case with the full QCD+QED mixing.
Lattice QCD simulations are now reaching a precision where isospin breaking effects become important. Previously, we have developed a program to systematically investigate the pattern of flavor symmetry beaking within QCD and successfully applied it to meson and baryon masses involving up, down and strange quarks. In this Letter we extend the calculations to QCD + QED and present our first results on isospin splittings in the pseudoscalar meson and baryon octets. In particular, we obtain the nucleon mass difference of $M_n-M_p=1.35(18)(8)\,\mbox{MeV}$ and the electromagnetic contribution to th…
Systems with the quantum numbers of up to twelve charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A non-relativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charg…
We study the corrections to $ε^\prime /ε$ in the minimal supersymmetric model at the leading order in QCD and QED. Supersymmetry can increase the standard model prediction for $ε^\prime /ε$ by at most 40\% for $m_t=174$ GeV, an enhancement which is indistinguishable from the present theoretical uncertainties. The most conspicuous effect of supersymmetry is a strong depletion of $ε^\prime /ε$. For certain choices of supersymmetric parameters, vanishing and even small negative values of $ε^\prime /ε$ can be obtained for the top quark in the CDF range.
On account of its application to the present and future analysis of the virtual photon correction to the hadronic properties by means of lattice QCD simulation, we initiate the study of the finite size scaling effect on the QED correction using low energy effective theory of QCD with QED. For this purpose, we begin with formulating a new QED on the space with finite volume. By adapting this formalism to the partially quenched QCD with electromagnetism, we explore the qualitative features of the finite size scaling effect on the electromagnetic correction to the masses of pseudo-Goldstone boson…
The static forces between electric charges and currents are modified at the loop level by the presence of a plasma. While electric charges are screened, currents are not. The effective coupling constant at long distances is enhanced in both cases as compared to the vacuum, and by different amounts, a clear sign that Lorentz symmetry is broken. We investigate these effects quantitatively, first in a QED plasma and secondly using non-perturbative simulations of QCD with two light degenerate flavors of quarks.
In order to calculate QED corrections to hadronic physical quantities by means of lattice simulations, a coherent description of electrically-charged states in finite volume is needed. In the usual periodic setup, Gauss's law and large gauge transformations forbid the propagation of electrically-charged states. A possible solution to this problem, which does not violate the axioms of local quantum field theory, has been proposed by Wiese and Polley, and is based on the use of C* boundary conditions. We present a thorough analysis of the properties and symmetries of QED in isolation and QED cou…
The contribution from hadronic vacuum polarisation effects is responsible for a large fraction of the theoretical uncertainty in the running of the QED coupling. The current level of uncertainty has become a limitation for electroweak precision tests. We use lattice QCD simulations with two flavours of O$(a)$ improved Wilson fermions to determine the Adler function in a broad range of the momentum transfer $Q^2$. The running of the QED coupling, including valence contributions from $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks, is compared to phenomenological results at intermediate $Q^2$ values. In the large …
Using the Schwinger-Keldysh closed time path integral formalism we show that the magnetic screening mass in QED and QCD at one loop level is non-zero as long as the single particle distribution function f(\vec{k}) is non-isotropic, {i.e.} it depends on the direction of the momentum. For isotropic distribution functions such as those corresponding to thermal equilibrium the magnetic screening mass at one loop level is found to be zero which is consistent with finite temperature field theory. The non-zero magnetic screening mass in non-isotropic non-equlibrium situations has fundamental importan…
