On account of its application to the present and future analysis of the virtual photon correction to the hadronic properties by means of lattice QCD simulation, we initiate the study of the finite size scaling effect on the QED correction using low energy effective theory of QCD with QED. For this purpose, we begin with formulating a new QED on the space with finite volume. By adapting this formalism to the partially quenched QCD with electromagnetism, we explore the qualitative features of the finite size scaling effect on the electromagnetic correction to the masses of pseudo-Goldstone bosons.
Systems with the quantum numbers of up to twelve charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A non-relativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charg…
Lattice QCD simulations are now reaching a precision where electromagnetic corrections from QED become important. In investigating the effects of SU(3) breaking due to quark mass differences within QCD, a group-theoretical analysis of the mass dependence greatly helped us organize our results. We now do the same with electromagnetic charge effects by extending the calculations to dynamical 1+1+1 flavor QCD + QED.
When aiming at the percent precision in hadronic quantities calculated by means of lattice simulations, isospin breaking effects become relevant. These are of two kinds: up/down mass splitting and electromagnetic corrections. In order to account properly for the latter, a consistent formulation of electrically-charged states in finite volume is needed. In fact on a periodic torus Gauss law and large gauge transformations forbid the propagation of electrically-charged states. In this talk I will review methods that have been used or proposed so far in order to circumvent this problem, while hig…
The running of the effective electromagnetic coupling is for many electroweak observables the dominant correction. It plays an important role for deriving constraints on the Standard Model in the context of electroweak precision measurements. We compute the four-loop QED corrections to the running of the effective electromagnetic coupling and perform a numerical evaluation of the different gauge invariant subsets.
Electroweak one-loop calculations for production of top-quark pairs at colliders are completed by providing the missing QED type contributions from real and virtual photons, where also effects from interference between QED and QCD contributions have to be taken into account. Moreover, photon-induced $t \bar{t}$ production is included as another partonic channel.
We introduce a model independent method for the determination of the hadronic contribution to the QED running coupling, $Δα_{\text{HAD}}(M_{Z}^{2})$, requiring no $e^+e^-$ annihilation data as input. This is achieved by calculating the heavy-quark contributions entirely in perturbative QCD, whilst the light-quark resonance piece is determined using available lattice QCD results. Future reduction in the current uncertainties in the latter shall turn this method into a valuable alternative to the standard approach. Subsequently, we find that the precision of current determinations of $Δα_{\text{…
The form factor that yields the light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is computed in lattice QCD+QED and QED. A non-perturbative treatment of QED is used and is checked against perturbation theory. The hadronic contribution is calculated for unphysical quark and muon masses, and only the diagram with a single quark loop is computed. Statistically significant signals are obtained. Initial results appear promising, and the prospect for a complete calculation with physical masses and controlled errors is discussed.
In this paper, for the first time a method is proposed to compute electromagnetic effects in hadronic processes using lattice simulations. The method can be applied, for example, to the leptonic and semileptonic decays of light or heavy pseudoscalar mesons. For these quantities the presence of infrared divergences in intermediate stages of the calculation makes the procedure much more complicated than is the case for the hadronic spectrum, for which calculations already exist. In order to compute the physical widths, diagrams with virtual photons must be combined with those corresponding to th…
Recently, the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration achieved sub-percent precision in the evaluation of the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g_μ-2$ (arXiv:hep-lat/2002.12347v3). At this level of precision, isospin-symmetric QCD is not sufficient. In this contribution we review how QED and strong-isospin-breaking effects have been included in our work. Isospin breaking is implemented by expanding the relevant correlation functions to second order in the electric charge $e$ and to first order in $m_u-m_d$. The correction terms are then computed using isosp…
Compact analytical formulae for QED radiative corrections in the processes of elastic $e-p$ scattering are obtained in the case when kinematic variables are reconstructed from the recoil proton momentum measured. Numerical analysis is presented under kinematic conditions of current experiments at JLab.
Mixing in the $Σ^0$-$Λ^0$ system is a direct consequence of broken isospin symmetry and is a measure of both isospin-symmetry breaking as well as general SU(3)-flavour symmetry breaking. In this work we present a new scheme for calculating the extent of $Σ^0$-$Λ^0$ mixing using simulations in lattice QCD+QED and perform several extrapolations that compare well with various past determinations. Our scheme allows us to easily contrast the QCD-only mixing case with the full QCD+QED mixing.
In these lecture notes the basics of QED corrections to hadronic decays are reviewed with special emphasis on conceptual (e.g. counting and tracking of infrared sensitive logs) rather than numerical aspects. General matters are illustrated for the cases of increased complexity and decreased inclusiveness: $e^+ e^- \to hadrons$, the leptonic decay $π^+ \to \ell^+ \bar ν$ and the semileptonic decay $B \to π\ell^+ \bar ν$. The non-trivial and ongoing efforts of including structure dependence are very briefly outlined.
In this presentation, we describe the computation of higher-order QED effects relevant in hadronic collisions. In particular, we discuss the calculation of mixed QCD-QED one-loop contributions to the Altarelli-Parisi splittings functions, as well as the pure two-loop QED corrections. We explain how to extend the DGLAP equations to deal with new parton distributions, emphasizing the consequences of the novel corrections in the determination (and evolution) of the photon distributions.
We review some recent results about the computation of mixed QCD-QED corrections beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. We start by considering the effects induced in the Altarelli-Parisi equations and the partonic distributions. In particular, we describe the computation of one-loop mixed QCD-QED and two-loop QED terms in the splitting kernels, which are relevant to account for the presence of photon distributions. In the last part, we briefly talk about the implementation of these corrections in the context of the $q_T$-subtraction/resummation formalism.
In order to reach (sub-)per cent level precision in lattice calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation, isospin breaking corrections must be included. This requires introducing QED on the lattice, and the associated finite-size effects are potentially large due to the absence of a mass gap. This means that the finite-size effects scale as an inverse polynomial in $L$ rather than being exponentially suppressed. Considering the $\mathcal{O}(α)$ corrected hadronic vacuum polarisation in QED$_{\mathrm{L}}$ with scalar QED as an effective theory, we show that the first possible term, which is…
A numerical analysis of QED radiative corrections for elastic e(mu)p cattering in hadronic variables at energies of the current experiment at JLab is performed. The explicit formulas from the review of Akhundov et al. resulting from the integration over the phase space of leptonic variables plus photon are used to obtain the values of the cross sections and the radiative correction factor for unpolarized lepton-proton scattering. Our numerical results agree with the corresponding results arising from the formulas of Afanasev et al.
Results are presented for the electromagnetic mass splittings of the low lying hadrons. These are used to determine the non-degenerate light quark masses. It is found that m_u=2.24(10)(34), m_d=4.65(15)(32), and $m_s=97.6(2.9)(5.5)$ MeV (MSbar scheme, 2 GeV scale). The first error is statistical and the second systematic. We find the lowest order electromagnetic splitting (m_pi+-m_pi0)_QED=3.38(23) MeV, the splittings including next-to-leading order, (m_pi+-m_pi0)_QED=4.50(23) MeV, (m_K+-m_K0)_QED=1.87(10) MeV, and the m_u != m_d contribution to the kaon mass difference, (m_K+-m_K0)_(m_u-m_d)=…
We study the screening of static magnetic and electric fields in massless quantum electrodynamics (QED) and massless scalar electrodynamics (SQED) at temperature $T$. Various exact relations for the static polarisation tensor are first reviewed and then verified perturbatively to fifth order (in the coupling) in QED and fourth order in SQED, using different resummation techniques. The magnetic and electric screening masses squared, as defined through the pole of the static propagators, are also calculated to fifth order in QED and fourth order in SQED, and their gauge-independence and renormal…
We examine the parity violating terms generated by the box diagram in QED_3 at finite temperature. These lead to both extensive as well as non-extensive effective actions, which have very distinct behavior in the long wavelength and static limits. We discuss a large gauge Ward identity for the leading terms in the static limit, whose solution coincides with the effective action proposed earlier.
The effect of sea quark electromagnetic charge on meson masses is investigated, and first results for full QED+QCD low-energy constants are presented. The electromagnetic charge for sea quarks is incorporated in quenched QED+full QCD lattice simulations by a reweighting method. The reweighting factor, which connects quenched and unquenched QED, is estimated using a stochastic method on 2+1 flavor dynamical domain-wall quark ensembles.
The contribution of exclusive radiative tail to the cross section of semi-inclusive hadron leptoproduction has been calculated exactly for the first time. Although the experience of inclusive data analyses suggests us that the contribution of radiative tail from the elastic peak is of particular importance, similar effects in the semi-inclusive process were only recently estimated in the peaking approximation. The explicit expressions for the lepton part of the lowest order QED contribution of exclusive radiative tail to the five-fold differential cross section are obtained and discussed. Nume…

I review recent evaluations of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g-2)_mu and to the effective fine structure constant alpha (M_Z). A new estimate for the hadronic shift delta_alpha hadronic = 0.027782 +/- 0.000254 is presented which implies 1/alpha (M_Z) = 128.913 +/- 0.035. It is based on a recent perturbative calculation of the Adler function which includes mass effects up to three-loops in a MOM scheme and requires little ad hoc assumptions. I then discuss perspectives for possible improvements in estimations of g-2 which we expect from the Phi--factory DAPHN…
We use recently evaluated radiative and nonperturbative corrections to production of heavy quarks by a vector current to give very precise theoretical calculations of the high energy ($t^{1/2}\geq \sqrt{2}$ GeV) imaginary part of the photon vacuum polarization function, ${\rm Im}Π(t)$. This allows us to improve the corresponding contributions to the muon (or any other lepton) $g-2$ anomaly and to the running QED constant on the $Z$, $\barα_{\rm QED}(M_Z)$. This decreases the error in the evaluations by a factor between two and six for the high energy contribution, and by some 50\% for the over…
We consider the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution of $Z$ bosons produced in hadronic collisions. At small values of $q_T$, we perform the analytic resummation of the logarithmically enhanced QED contributions up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, including the mixed QCD-QED contributions at leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummed results are consistently matched with the next-to-leading fixed-order results (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$) at small, intermediate and large values of $q_T$. We combine the QED corrections with the known QCD results at next-to-next-to-leading order ($\mathcal{…
We show that inconsistency between background field methods, which are relevant for lattice QCD spectroscopy, and effective field theory matching conditions, which are obtained from scattering amplitudes, can be resolved by augmenting nonrelativistic QED with operators related by the equations of motion. To determine the coefficients of such operators, we perform the nonrelativistic expansion of QED for a spin-half hadron including non-minimal electromagnetic couplings. As an effective field theory framework could provide a valuable tool to analyze lattice QCD correlation functions in external…
We review the theory of hadronic atoms in QCD + QED, based on a non-relativistic effective Lagrangian framework. We first provide an introduction to the theory, and then describe several applications: meson-meson, meson-nucleon atoms and meson-deuteron compounds. Finally, we compare the quantum field theory framework used here with the traditional approach, which is based on quantum-mechanical potential scattering.
To understand the direct $J/ψ+X_{\mathrm{non-c\bar{c}}}$ production mechanism in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation, in this work, we propose to measure the inclusive $J/ψ$ plus light hadrons (LH) production at B-factories and present a detailed study on its QED production due to $ψ(2S)$ feed-down, where the $ψ(2S)$ are produced in $e^{+}e^{-}\to ψ(2S)+γ$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\to ψ(2S)+f\bar{f}, f=lepton, light quark$, and QED contribution to direct $J/ψ+q\bar{q}$ production with $q=u,d,s$ quark. We find that the QED contribution is huge in the whole phase space region, but can be reduced largely and is in th…
The leptonic tensor for the process $e^+ e^- \to γ+γ^*$, which describes the next-to-leading order virtual and soft QED corrections to initial state radiation in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation with emission of an extra virtual photon decaying into hadrons, is calculated. A Monte Carlo generator for the reaction $e^+ e^- \to γ+ π^+ π^-$ has been set up which includes these corrections. It thus describes configurations where the invariant mass of the hadrons plus photon is very close to $\sqrt{s}$. Predictions for cms energies of 1 to 10 GeV, corresponding to the energies of DAPHNE and B-meson factories…
The presence of long-range interactions violates a condition necessary to relate the energy of two particles in a finite volume to their S-matrix elements in the manner of Luscher. While in infinite volume, QED contributions to low-energy charged particle scattering must be resummed to all orders in perturbation theory (the Coulomb ladder diagrams), in a finite volume the momentum operator is gapped, allowing for a perturbative treatment. The leading QED corrections to the two-particle finite-volume energy quantization condition below the inelastic threshold, as well as approximate formulas fo…
The light-cone Fock state representation of composite systems has number of remarkable properties and for systems such as hadrons they have exact representation for angular momentum, energy momentum tensor. We investigate the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors with zero momentum transfer in QED and Yukawa theory. To improve the convergence near the end points of $x$ qualitatively as well as to check the consistency of the model, we differentiate the wavefunction w.r.t. bound state mass. We test the behaviour of the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment, which follows directly from the L…
We present a lattice calculation of the leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm) with pion masses between $\simeq 210$ and $\simeq 450$ MeV. The results are obtained adopting the RM123 approach in the quenched-QED approximation, which neglects the charges of the s…
We study the parity-breaking terms generated by the box diagram in 2+1 dimensional thermal QED. These lead, in the long wave limit, to a gauge invariant extensive action which behaves as 1/T at high temperature. In contrast, the effective action in the static limit involves leading non-extensive terms proportional to 1/T^3 at high temperature, which violate large gauge invariance. We derive a non-linear large gauge Ward identity, which relates the leading static terms of different order in perturbation theory and whose solution coincides with the all order effective action proposed earlier.
The Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian is used to obtain general expressions for electric and magnetic fields induced by non-linearity, to leading order in the non-linear expansion parameter, and for quasistatic situations. These expressions are then used to compute the induced electromagnetic fields due to a spherical shell with uniform charge distribution on the surface, in the presence of an external constant magnetic field. The induced electric field contains several multipole terms with unusual angular dependences. Most importantly, the leading term of the induced magnetic field is due…
Theoretical predictions for Bhabha scattering at the two-loop level require the inclusion of hadronic vacuum polarization in the photon propagator. We present predictions for the contributions from reducible amplitudes which are proportional to the vacuum polarization $π(q^2)$ and from irreducible ones where the vacuum polarization appears in a loop representing vertex or box diagrams. The second case can be treated by using dispersion relations with a weight function proportional to the $R$-ratio as measured in electron-positron annihilation into hadrons and kernels that can be calculated per…
We develop the in-out formalism for one-loop effective actions in electromagnetic fields in the space-dependent gauge. We further advance a method using the inverse scattering matrix to calculate the effective actions in pure magnetic fields, find the effective actions in a constant magnetic field and a localized Sauter-type magnetic field and apply the uniform semiclassical approximation to the effective action in a general magnetic field. In the in-out formalism we show that the one-loop effective actions in constant fields and Sauter-type fields exhibit the electromagnetic duality.
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$ is one of the most accurate quantities in Particle Physics. The long-standing discrepancy of about $3.7$ standard deviations between the experimental value and the prediction of the Standard Model could represent an intriguing indication of New Physics. The experiments at Fermilab (E989) and at J-PARC (E34) aim at reducing significantly the experimental uncertainty, thus making the theoretical one due to hadronic corrections the main limitation of this stringent test of the Standard Model. In this contribution we present the results of a first-pr…
Isospin is an almost exact symmetry of strong interactions and the corrections to the isosymmetric limit are, in general, at the percent level. For several hadronic quantities relevant for flavour physics phenomenology, such as pseudoscalar meson masses or the kaon leptonic and semileptonic decay rates, these effects are of the same order of magnitude of the uncertainties quoted in current large-scale QCD simulations on the lattice and cannot be neglected anymore. In this contribution I discuss some recent results for the leptonic decay rates of light pseudoscalar mesons obtained by the Soton-…
The impact of higher-order final-state photonic corrections on the precise determination of the W-boson mass at the Tevatron and LHC colliders is evaluated. In the presence of realistic selection criteria, the shift in the W mass from a fit to the transverse mass distribution is found to be about 10 MeV in the $W \to μν$ channel and almost negligible in the $W \to e ν$ channel. The calculation, which is implemented in a Monte Carlo event generator for data analysis, can contribute to reduce the uncertainty associated to the W mass measurement at future hadron collider experiments.
We derive an analytic expression for one-loop effective action of QCD+QED at zero and finite temperatures by using the Schwinger's proper time method. The result is a nonlinear effective action not only for electromagnetic and chromo-electromagnetic fields but also the Polyakov loop, and thus reproduces the Euler-Heisenberg action in QED, QCD, and QED+QCD, and also the Weiss potential for the Polyakov loop at finite temperature. As applications of this "Euler-Heisenberg-Weiss" action in QCD+QED, we investigate quark pair productions induced by QCD+QED fields at zero temperature and the Polyako…
In the in-out formalism we advance a method of the inverse scattering matrix for calculating effective actions in pure magnetic field backgrounds. The one-loop effective actions are found in a localized magnetic field of Sauter type and approximately in a general magnetic field by applying the uniform semiclassical approximation. The effective actions exhibit the electromagnetic duality between a constant electric field and a constant magnetic field and between $E(x) = E sech^2 (x/L)$ and $B(x) = B sech^2 (x/L)$.
We propose a factorized approach to QED radiative corrections for inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering to systematically account for QED and QCD radiation contributions to both processes on equal footing. This is achieved by utilizing factorization to resum logarithmically enhanced QED radiation into universal lepton distribution and fragmentation (or jet) functions. Numerical simulations suggest that the QED effects induced by the rotational distortion of the hadron transverse momentum, arising from the mismatch between the experimental Breit frame and the true photon-hadron…
Some non linear, second order QED processes in the presence of intense plane electromagnetic waves are investigated. Analytic expressions with general kinematics are derived for Compton scattering and $e^+e^-$ pair production in a circularly polarised external electromagnetic field. The differential cross sections were investigated numerically for photon energies up to 50 MeV, external field intensity parameter $ν^2$ to value 2, and all scattering angles. The variation of full cross sections with respect to external field intensity was also established. The presence of the external field led t…
The quantum electrodynamical (QED) short wavelength correction on plasma wave propagation for a non-relativistic quantum plasma is investigated. A general dispersion relation for a thermal multi-component quantum plasma is derived. It is found that the classical dispersion relation for any wave mode can be modified to include quantum and short wavelength QED effects by simple substitutions of the thermal velocity and the plasma frequency. Furthermore, the dispersion relation has been modified to include QED effects of strong magnetic fields. It is found that strong magnetic fields together wit…
The ${\cal O}(α)$ radiative corrections to the process $p\,p\hskip-7pt\hbox{$^{^{(\!-\!)}}$} \rightarrow γ^*, \, Z \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^-$ ($\ell=e,\,μ$) are calculated. Factorizing the collinear singularity associated with initial state photon bremsstrahlung into the parton distribution functions, we find that initial state corrections have a much smaller effect than final state radiative corrections. Due to mass singular logarithmic terms associated with photons emitted collinear with one of the final state leptons, QED radiative corrections strongly affect the shape of the di-lepton inva…
Within the standard V - A theory of weak interactions, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the linear sigma-model (LsM) of strong low-energy hadronic interactions we analyse gauge and infrared properties of hadronic structure of the neutron and proton in the neutron beta decay to leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion. We show that the complete set of Feynman diagrams describing radiative corrections of order O(α/π), induced by hadronic structure of the nucleon, to the rate of the neutron beta decay is gauge non-invariant and unrenormalisable. We show that a gauge non-invariant contri…
Symmetry breaking induced by untwisted fermions in QED in a nonsimply connected spacetime with topology $S^{1}\times R^{3}$ is investigated. It is found that the discrete CPT symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken by the appearance of a constant vacuum expectation value of the electromagnetic potential along the direction of space periodicity. The constant potential is shown to be gauge nonequivalent to zero in the nonsimply connected spacetime under consideration. Due to the symmetry breaking, one of the electromagnetic modes of propagation is massive with a mass that depends on the i…
The ratios among the leading-order (LO) hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of electron, muon and tau-lepton, $a_{\ell=e,μτ}^{HVP,LO}$, are computed using lattice QCD+QED simulations. The results include the effects at order $O(α_{em}^2)$ as well as the electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections at orders $O(α_{em}^3)$ and $O(α_{em}^2(m_u-m_d))$, respectively, where $(m_u-m_d)$ is the $u$- and $d$-quark mass difference. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical q…
We study the properties of the trace $\Tmm$ of the QED energy-momentum tensor in the presence of quasi-constant external electromagnetic fields. We exhibit the origin of $\Tmm$ in the quantum nonlinearity of the electromagnetic theory. We obtain the quantum vacuum fluctuation-induced interaction of a particle with the field of a strongly magnetized compact stellar object.
We present the theory of QED x QCD resummation and its interplay with shower/matrix element matching in precision LHC physics scenarios. We illustrate the theory using single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders.
Within the standard V - A theory of weak interactions, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the linear sigma-model (LsM) of strong low-energy hadronic interactions we analyse gauge properties of hadronic structure of the neutron and proton in the neutron radiative beta-decay. We show that the Feynman diagrams, describing contributions of hadronic structure to the amplitude of the neutron radiative beta-decay in the tree-approximation for strong low-energy interactions in the LsM, are gauge invariant. In turn, the complete set of Feynman diagrams, describing the contributions of hadron-photon inte…
The string-inspired technique is used for the calculation of vacuum polarisation tensors in constant electromagnetic fields. In the first part of this series, we give a detailed exposition of the method for the case of the QED one-loop N-photon amplitude in a general constant electromagnetic background field. The two-point cases are calculated explicitly, leading to compact representations for the constant field vacuum polarisation tensors for both scalar and spinor QED.
