McMule is a Monte Carlo framework developed to advance the low-energy precision frontier by providing QED corrections to leptonic scattering and decay processes, currently up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Recent developments have extended its capabilities in two important directions: the systematic inclusion of electroweak effects at low energies within the low-energy effective field theory [arXiv:2507.17652], and the incorporation of pion form factors and the non-perturbative hadronic vacuum polarisation in loop amplitudes through a combination of OpenLoops and effective field theory techniques, referred to as disperon QED [arXiv:2512.10709]. I will provide an overview of McMule and discuss these recent extensions and their applications. In particular, I will illustrate the impact of the model used for non-perturbative $γ$-$Z$ mixing effects in the context of the MOLLER experiment and highlight the subtlety involved in consistently aligning OpenLoops with its effective field theory expansion in disperon QED.
McMule is a framework for fully differential higher-order QED calculations of scattering and decay processes involving leptons. It keeps finite lepton masses, which regularises collinear singularities. Soft singularities are treated with dimensional regularisation and using FKS$^\ell$ subtraction. We describe the implementation of the framework in Fortran 95, list the processes that are currently implemented, and give instructions on how to run the code. In addition, we present new phenomenological results for muon-electron scattering and lepton-proton scattering, including the dominant NNLO c…
We present McMule, a unified framework for the calculation of NLO and NNLO corrections to many processes in QED with massive fermions. This easily extendable program allows users to calculate an arbitrary observable for any of the processes implemented. These include various lepton decays as well as certain low-energy scattering experiments such as $eμ\to eμ$ and $\ell p\to\ell p$ that can be measured to high enough a precision to warrant QED corrections. As part of our discussion, we will present a pedagogical introduction to how these calculations are performed, focusing on technical aspects…

We employ an effective Lagrangian approach to derive the leading-logarithm two-loop electroweak contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu. We show that these corrections can be obtained using known results on the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. We confirm the result of Czarnecki et al. for the bosonic part and present the complete sin^2 θ_W dependence of the fermionic contribution. The approach is then used to compute the leading-logarithm three-loop electroweak contribution to a_mu. Finally we derive, in a fairly model-independent way, the QED improvement of new-p…
We study the leading log infrared behavior of electroweak corrections at TeV scale energies, that will be reached by next generation of linear colliders (NLC). We show that, contrary to what happens at typical LEP energies, it is not anymore possible to disentangle ``pure electroweak'' from ``photonic'' corrections. This means that soft QED effects do not factorize and therefore cannot be treated in the usual ``naive'' way they were accounted for in the LEP-era. The nonfactorizable effects come up first at the two loop LL level, that we calculate explicitly for a fermion source that is neutral…
We describe the state of the art in the field of radiative corrections for deep inelastic scattering. Different methods of calculation of radiative corrections are reviewed. Some new results for QED radiative corrections for polarized deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented. A comparison of results obtained by the codes POLRAD and HECTOR is given for the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. Recent results on radiative corrections to deep inelastic scattering with tagged photons are briefly discussed.
A description of the Fortran program HECTOR for a variety of semi-analytical calculations of radiative QED, QCD, and electroweak corrections to the double-differential cross sections of NC and CC deep inelastic charged lepton proton (or lepton deuteron) scattering is presented. HECTOR originates from the substantially improved and extended earlier programs HELIOS and TERAD91. It is mainly intended for applications at HERA or LEPxLHC, but may be used also for muon scattering in fixed target experiments. The QED corrections may be calculated in different sets of variables: leptonic, hadronic, mi…
The running of the effective electromagnetic coupling is for many electroweak observables the dominant correction. It plays an important role for deriving constraints on the Standard Model in the context of electroweak precision measurements. We compute the four-loop QED corrections to the running of the effective electromagnetic coupling and perform a numerical evaluation of the different gauge invariant subsets.
Electroweak corrections to hadron collider processes become relevant at the level of precision reached by present-day LHC experiments. We provide a preliminary discussion of the impact of electroweak corrections to parton distributions, concentrating on electrodynamics corrections to parton evolution equations, and showing a preliminary assessment of their impact. Furthermore, we determine the parton distribution function of the photon from deep inelastic scattering data using the NNPDF methodology.
We present an implementation of the full electroweak $H+2~\text{jets}$ production process at hadron colliders in the framework of the $\tt{POWHEG~BOX}$, a public tool for the matching of fixed-order perturbative calculations with parton shower generators. Our implementation allows for the simultaneous description of vector-boson fusion and Higgsstrahlung contributions. NLO-QCD and electroweak corrections are taken into account and matched to QCD and QED showers, respectively. The size of the fixed-order QCD and electroweak corrections is found to be moderate, but dependent on the considered se…
We have examined the evidence for the electroweak radiative corrections in the LEP precision data along with the intriguing possibility that the QED corrections only may be sufficient to fit the data. We find that the situation is very sensitive to the precise value of $M_W$. While the world average value of $M_W$ strongly favors nonvanishing electroweak radiative corrections, the QED corrections alone can account for the data within $2σ$ in the context of the standard model. We discuss how the precision measurements of $M_W$ can provide a decisive test for the standard model with radiative co…
We compute the leading-log QED, the next-to-leading-log QED-QCD, and the electroweak corrections to the charm quark contribution relevant for the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar. The corresponding parameter P_c(X) is increased by up to 2% with respect to the pure QCD estimate to P_c(X) = 0.372 +- 0.015 for m_c(m_c)= (1.286 +- 0.013) GeV, alphas(M_Z) = 0.1176 +- 0.0020 and |V_us| = 0.2255. For the branching ratio we find B(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar) = (8.5 +- 0.7)*10^{-11}, where the quoted uncertainty is dominated by the CKM elements.
General model-independent expressions are developed for the polarized and unpolarized cross-sections for $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$ near the $Z^0$ resonance. The expressions assume only the analyticity of S-matrix elements. Angular dependence is included by means of a partial wave expansion. The resulting simple forms are suitable for use in fitting data or in Monte Carlo event generators. A distinction is made between model-independent and model-dependent QED corrections and a simple closed expression is given for the effect of initial-final state bremsstrahlung and virtual QED corrections.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of two-loop electroweak corrections at energies Q >> M_W, where logarithms of the type ln(Q/M_W) become dominant. The calculation of the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms for massless and massive fermion-scattering processes is summarized. The derivations are performed diagrammatically within the spontaneously broken electroweak theory. We find that the soft and collinear singularities resulting from photons can be factorized into a QED-like term and that, up to logarithms of the Z-W mass ratio, the effects of symmetry breaking cancel. This result …
Electroweak one-loop calculations for production of top-quark pairs at colliders are completed by providing the missing QED type contributions from real and virtual photons, where also effects from interference between QED and QCD contributions have to be taken into account. Moreover, photon-induced $t \bar{t}$ production is included as another partonic channel.
We have computed the complete one-loop electroweak effects in the MSSM for single top (and single antitop) production in the $t$-channel at hadron colliders, generalizing a previous analysis performed for the dominant $dt$ final state and fully including QED effects. The results are quite similar for all processes. The overall Standard Model one-loop effect is small, of the few percent size. This is due to a compensation of weak and QED contributions that are of opposite sign. The genuine SUSY contribution is generally quite modest in the mSUGRA scenario. The experimental observables would the…
Reaching the desired precision level for W and Z processes at the LHC will require a mixture of higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections. HERWIRI2 is a step in implementing QED x QCD exponentiation in a hadronic event generator. This program implements leading electroweak corrections and coherent exclusive exponentiation in a HERWIG environment. We discuss the status of the program, recent tests, and future developments.
A concise review about the status of the calculation of radiative corrections to the Drell-Yan processes is presented. The effect of matching together exact electroweak O(alpha) corrections with higher-order QED effects due to multiple photon emission is displayed in some physical distributions in the charged current channel, which have obtained with the new version of the event generator HORACE.
Isolated lepton momenta, in particular their directions are the most precisely measured quantities in pp collisions at LHC. This offers opportunities for multitude of precision measurements. It is of practical importance to verify if precision measurements with lep- tons in the final state require all theoretical effects evaluated simultaneously or if QED bremsstrahlung in the final state can be separated without unwanted precision loss. Results for final state bremsstrahlung in the decays of narrow resonances are obtained from the Feynman rules of QED in an unambiguous way and can be controll…
Electroweak radiative corrections to the cross section of the process $e^+ e^- \to Z H$ are considered. The complete one-loop electroweak radiative corrections are evaluated with the help of the SANC system. Higher-order contributions of the initial state radiation are computed in the QED structure function formalism. Numerical results are produced by a new version of the ReneSANCe event generator and MCSANCee integrator for the conditions of future electron-positron colliders. The resulting theoretical uncertainty in the description of this process is estimated.
Complete one-loop electroweak radiative corrections to the cross section of the process $e^+e^- \to μ^-μ^+ (τ^-τ^+)$ are evaluated with the help of the \SANC system. Higher-order contributions of the initial state radiation are computed in the QED structure function formalism. Numerical results are given for the center-of-mass energy range $\sqrt{s}=5, ~7$~GeV for various polarization degrees of the initial particles.
Reaching the 1% precision level for W and Z production calculations for the LHC will require a mixture of higher order QCD and electroweak corrections. As a first step toward implementing the combined QED\otimesQCD exponentiation proposed in previous work, we have implemented the order alpha electroweak corrections and YFS exponentiation structure of the KK Monte Carlo in HERWIG. We discuss the current status of this program and sketch the further developments needed to reach the desired precision level.
In Next Linear Colliders at TeV scale, electroweak double logarithmic corrections, which come from the infrared behaviors of theory can not be neglected. It is well known that in QED and QCD, double logarithmic corrections are resummed to all orders, and these corrections can be exponentiated, resulting in the Sudakov form factor. However it is never trivial that double logarithmic corrections in electroweak theory can be exponentiated, because of the spontaneous breaking of symmetry and the pattern of that. We discuss the electroweak double logarithmic corrections at two loop level and explai…
We scrutinise the ability of the primary QED final-state resummation tools, combined with electroweak virtual corrections, to reproduce the exact next-to-leading order electroweak calculation in the four-charged-lepton final state. We further examine the dependence of the findings on the lepton-photon dressing-cone size as well as the resonance identification strategy. Overall we find excellent agreement with the fixed-order result, but partial differences not directly connected with resummation-induced higher-order effects at the few-percent level are observed in some cases, which are relevan…
In perturbation theory the infrared structure of the electroweak interactions produces large corrections proportional to double logarithms log^2 (s/m^2), similar to Sudakov logarithms in QED, when the scale s is much larger than the typical mass m of the particles running in the loops. These energy growing corrections can be particularly relevant for the planned Next Linear Colliders. We study these effects in the Standard Model for the process e+ e^->f fbar and we compare them with similar corrections coming from SUSY loops.
We investigate the double Dalitz decays $B_s \to l^+ l^- l'^+ l'^-$ on the basis of the effective Hamiltonian for the transition $b \bar{s} \to l^+ l^-$, and universal form factors suggested by QCD. The correlated mass spectrum of the two lepton pairs in the decay $B_s \to e^+ e^- μ^+ μ^-$ is derived in an efficient way, using a QED result for meson decays mediated by two virtual photons: $B_s \to γ^* γ^* \to e^+ e^- μ^+ μ^-$. A comment is made on the correlation between the planes of the two lepton pairs. The conversion ratios $ρ_{lll'l'}= \frac{Γ(B_s \to l^+ l^- l'^+ l'^-)}{Γ(B_s \to γγ)}$ a…
The results for one-loop correction to deep inelastic scattering of longitudinal polarized leptons on longitudinal polarized hadrons are obtained withing the framework of the standard theory of electroweak interactions and ordinary quark-parton model. The on-shell renormalization scheme in t'Hooft-Feynman gauge is applied. The numerical analysis is carried out under conditions of modern particle physics experiments.Particular emphasis is laid on contributions usually ignored at RC procedure --- electroweak corrections to electromagnetic asymmetry and RC to hadronic current. The structure of RC…
Following recent work on the combination of electroweak and strong radiative corrections to single W-boson hadroproduction in the POWHEG BOX framework, we generalize the above treatment to cover the neutral current Drell-Yan process. According to the POWHEG method, we combine both the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak and QED multiple photon corrections with the native NLO and Parton Shower QCD contributions. We show comparisons with the predictions of the electroweak generator HORACE, to validate the reliability and accuracy of the approach. We also present phenomenological results obta…
We derive the Callan-Symanzik equation of the electroweak Standard Model in the QED-like on-shell parameterization. The various coefficient functions, the $β$-functions and anomalous dimensions, are determined in one-loop order in the most general linear gauge compatible with rigid symmetry. In this way the basic elements for a systematic investigation of higher-order leading logarithmic contributions in the Standard Model are provided. The one-loop $β$-function of the electromagnetic coupling turns out to be independent of mass ratios and it is QED-like in this sense. Besides the QED-contribu…
We consider two-loop leading and next-to-leading logarithmic virtual corrections to arbitrary processes with external massless fermions in the electroweak Standard Model at energies well above the electroweak scale. Using the sector-decomposition method and alternatively the strategy of regions we calculate the mass singularities that arise as logarithms of Q^2/MW^2, where Q is the energy scale of the considered process, and 1/εpoles in D=4-2εdimensions, to one- and two-loop next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The derivations are performed within the complete electroweak theory with spontane…
General analyses of $B$-physics processes beyond the Standard Model require accounting for operator mixing in the renormalization-group evolution from the matching scale down to the typical scale of $B$ physics. For this purpose the anomalous dimensions of the full set of local dimension-six operators beyond the Standard Model are needed. We present here for the first time a complete and non-redundant set of dimension-six operators relevant for $B$-meson mixing and decay, together with the complete one-loop anomalous dimensions in QCD and QED. These results are an important step towards the au…
We provide high-precision predictions for muon-pair and tau-pair productions in a photon-photon collision by considering a complete set of one-loop-level scattering amplitudes, i.e., electroweak (EW) corrections together with soft and hard QED radiation. Accordingly, we present a detailed numerical discussion with particular emphasis on the pure QED corrections as well as genuinely weak corrections. The effects of angular and initial beam polarisation distributions on production rates are also discussed. An improvement is observed by a factor of two with oppositely polarized photons. Our resul…
We reevaluate the hadronic contribution to the running of the QED fine structure constant alpha(s) at s = M_Z^2. We use data from e+e- annihilation and tau decays at low energy and at the qq-bar thresholds, where resonances occur. Using so-called spectral moments and the Operator Product Expansion (OPE), it is shown that a reliable theoretical prediction of the hadronic production rate R(s) is available at relatively low energies. Its application improves significantly the precision on the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution. We obtain delta_alpha^had = (277.8 +/- 2.6) x 10^-4 yielding a…
A previous calculation of electroweak O(alpha) corrections to deep-inelastic neutrino scattering, as e.g. measured by NuTeV and NOMAD, is supplemented by higher-order effects. In detail, we take into account universal two-loop effects from Δαand Δρas well as higher-order final-state photon radiation off muons in the structure function approach. Moreover, we make use of the recently released O(alpha)-improved parton distributions MRST2004QED and identify the relevant QED factorization scheme, which is DIS like. As a technical byproduct, we describe slicing and subtraction techniques for an effi…
We evaluate a non-perturbative QED contribution to the electron g-2 which comes from virtual positronium. We find it to be 9.0*10^{-14}. This value is comparable to the five-loop contribution of usual perturbative calculation, and several times larger than the electroweak correction.
Consider the Euclidean functional integral representation of any physical process in the electroweak model. Integrating out the fermion degrees of freedom introduces twenty-four fermion determinants. These multiply the Gaussian functional measures of the Maxwell, $Z$, $W$ and Higgs fields to give an effective functional measure. Suppose the functional integral over the Maxwell field is attempted first. This paper is concerned with the large amplitude behavior of the Maxwell effective measure. It is assumed that the large amplitude variation of this measure is insensitive to the presence of the…
At energies ($\sqrt{s}$) much higher than the electroweak gauge boson masses ($M$) large logarithmic corrections of the scale ratio $\sqrt{s}/M$ occur. While the electroweak Sudakov type double (DL) and universal single (SL) logarithms have recently been resummed, at higher orders the electroweak renormalization group (RG) corrections are folded with the DL Sudakov contributions and must be included for a consistent subleading treatment to all orders. In this paper we derive first all relevant formulae for massless as well as massive gauge theories including all such terms up to order ${\cal O…
The effective renormalizable theory describing electromagnetic and strong interactions of quarks of five light flavors ($n_f = 5$ QCD$\times$QED) is considered as a low-energy limit of the full Standard Model. Two-loop relation between the running strong coupling constants $α_s$ defined in either theories is found by simultaneous decoupling of electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons in addition to the top quark. The relation potentially allows one to confront "low-energy determination of $α_s$ with a high-energy one with increased accuracy. Numerical impact of new $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$ terms is studi…
We calculate the full ${\cal O}(α_{ew})$ electroweak corrections to the Higgs pair production process $e^+ e^- \to H H Z$ at an electron-positron linear collider in the standard model, and analyze the dependence of the Born cross section and the corrected cross section on the Higgs boson mass $m_H$ and the c.m. energy $\sqrt{s}$. To see the origin of some of the large corrections clearly, we calculate the QED and genuine weak corrections separately. The numerical results show that the corrections significantly suppress or enhance the Born cross section, depending on the values of $m_H$ and $\s…
As present and future experiments, on both the energy and precision frontiers, look to identify new physics beyond the Standard Model, we require more precise determinations of fundamental quantities, like the QED and electroweak couplings at various momenta. These can be obtained either entirely from experimental measurements, or from one such measurement at a particular virtuality combined with the couplings' virtuality dependence computed within the SM. Thus, a precise, entirely theoretical determination of the running couplings is highly desirable, even more since the preliminary results o…
Achieving the highest precision for theoretical predictions at the LHC requires the calculation of hard-scattering cross-sections that include perturbative QCD corrections up to (N)NNLO and electroweak (EW) corrections up to NLO. Parton distribution functions (PDFs) need to be provided with matching accuracy, which in the case of QED effects involves introducing the photon parton distribution of the proton, $xγ(x,Q^2)$. In this work a determination of the photon PDF from fits to recent ATLAS measurements of high-mass Drell-Yan dilepton production at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV is presented. This analysis…
Parton distributions with QED corrections open new scenarios for high precision physics. We recall the need for accurate and improved predictions which keeps into account higher order QCD corrections together with electroweak effects. We study predictions obtained with the improved Born approximation and the $G_μ$ scheme by using two public codes: DYNNLO and HORACE. We focus our attention on the Drell-Yan Z-boson invariant mass distribution at low- and high-mass regions, recently measured by the ATLAS experiment and we estimate the impact of each component of the final prediction. We show that…
We present the Monte Carlo event generator KK version 4.13 for precision predictions of the Electroweak Standard Model for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ at centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. Effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second order, including all interference effects, within Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), which is based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. Electroweak corrections are inclu…
This note presents an analysis of lepton-flavour-violating muon decays within the framework of a low-energy effective field theory that contains higher-dimensional operators allowed by QED and QCD symmetries. The decay modes $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to 3e$ are investigated below the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale, down to energies at which such processes occur, i.e. the muon mass scale. The complete class of dimension-5 and dimension-6 operators is studied systematically at the tree level, and one-loop contributions to the renormalisation group equations are fully taken into account. Current exp…
QED, Hadronic, and Electroweak Standard Model contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu = (g_mu-2)/2, and their theoretical uncertainties are scrutinized. The status and implications of the recently reported 2.6 sigma experiment vs.theory deviation a_mu^{exp}-a_mu^{SM} = 426(165) times 10^{-11} are discussed. Possible explanations due to supersymmetric loop effects with m_{SUSY} \simeq 55 sqrt{tan beta} GeV, radiative mass mechanisms at the 1--2 TeV scale and other ``New Physics'' scenarios are examined.
We consider large-angle two photon production in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation as a possible process to monitor the luminosity of a future $e^+ e^-$ circular collider (FCC-ee). We review and assess the status of the theoretical accuracy by performing a detailed phenomenological study of next-to-leading order electroweak corrections and leading logarithmic QED contributions due to multiple photon radiation. We also estimate the impact of photonic and fermion-loop corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order and the uncertainty induced by the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarization. Possible p…
Application of the background-field method yields a gauge-invariant effective action for the electroweak Standard Model, from which simple QED-like Ward identities are derived. As a consequence of these Ward identities, the background-field Green functions are shown to possess very desirable theoretical properties. The renormalization of the Standard Model in the background-field formalism is studied. A consistent on-shell renormalization procedure retaining the full gauge symmetry is presented. The structure of the counterterms is shown to greatly simplify compared to the conventional formali…
QED, Hadronic, and Electroweak Standard Model contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu = (g_mu-2)/2, are reviewed. Theoretical uncertainties in the prediction a_mu^SM = 116591597(67) times 10^{-11} are scrutinized. Effects due to ``New Physics'' are described. Implications of the current experiment vs. theory constraint a_mu^exp - a_mu^SM = 453(465) times 10^{-11} and anticipated near term error reduction to +- 155 times 10^{-11} are discussed.
It might be expected that only global symmetries are fundamental symmetries of Nature, whereas local symmetries and associated massless gauge fields could solely emerge due to spontaneous breaking of underlying spacetime symmetries involved, such as relativistic invariance and supersymmetry. This breaking, taken in the form of the nonlinear sigma-model type pattern for vector fields or superfields, puts essential restrictions on geometrical degrees of freedom of a physical field system that makes it to adjust itself in such a way that its global internal symmetry G turns into the local symmetr…
