We study the asymptotic behaviour of two-loop electroweak corrections at energies Q >> M_W, where logarithms of the type ln(Q/M_W) become dominant. The calculation of the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms for massless and massive fermion-scattering processes is summarized. The derivations are performed diagrammatically within the spontaneously broken electroweak theory. We find that the soft and collinear singularities resulting from photons can be factorized into a QED-like term and that, up to logarithms of the Z-W mass ratio, the effects of symmetry breaking cancel. This result supports resummation prescriptions that are based on a symmetric SU(2)xU(1) theory matched with QED at the electroweak scale.
In processes at the energy much higher than electroweak scale, weak boson mass act as the infrared cutoff in weak boson loops and resulting Sudakov log corrections can be as large as 10%. Since electroweak theory is off-diagonally broken gauge theory, its IR structure is quite different from that of QCD. We briefly review recent developments on electroweak Sudakov and discuss on the exponentiation of Sudakov double logs and explicit 2 loop calculations in Feynman gauge.
We investigate the Sudakov double logarithmic corrections to the form factor of fermion in the SU(2)XU(1) electroweak theory. We adopt the familiar Feynman gauge and present explicit calculations at the two loop level. We show that the leading logarithmic corrections coming from the infrared singularities are consistent with the "postulated" exponentiated electroweak Sudakov form factor. The similarities and differences in the "soft" physics between the electroweak theory and the unbroken non-abelian gauge theory (QCD) will be clarified.
The dominant electroweak double logarithmic corrections to the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$ at high energy are found in all orders of perturbation theory. In contrast to results in simple Yang-Mills theories these corrections do not exponentiate.
Electroweak Sudakov corrections of the form alpha^n log^m s/M_{W,Z}^2 are summed using renormalization group evolution in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Results are given for the scalar, vector and tensor form-factors for fermion and scalar particles. The formalism for including massive gauge bosons in SCET is developed.
At energies much larger than the mass of the weak gauge bosons, electroweak radiative corrections can lead to significant corrections. At 1 TeV the one loop corrections can be of ${\cal O} (20 %)$ due to large contributions of the Sudakov type. We summarize recent progress in the evaluation and resummation of the double and single logarithmic corrections to general scattering amplitudes for fermions, transversely as well as longitudinally polarized external lines.
Accounting for the double-logarithmic (DL) contributions to amplitude of Z to f \bar{f} leads to the Sudakov suppression. In contrast, resumming DL contributions to amplitudes of W to f \bar{f}' results into an exponential with a positive exponent, i.e. into the enhancement. This effect is intrinsic property of the theories with non-Abelian gauge groups.
We study electroweak Sudakov effects in single W, Z and gamma production at large transverse momentum using Soft Collinear Effective Theory. We present a factorized form of the cross section near the partonic threshold with both QCD and electroweak effects included and compute the electroweak corrections arising at different scales. We analyze their size relative to the QCD corrections as well as the impact of strong-electroweak mixing terms. Numerical results for the vector-boson cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider are presented.
We describe a formalism for calculating electroweak Sudakov logarithms in the Coulomb gauge. This formalism is applicable to arbitrary electroweak processes. For illustration we focus on the specific reactions e^+e^- -> f \bar{f} and e^+e^- -> W_T^+W_T^-, W_L^+W_L^-, which contain all the salient details of dealing with the various types of particles. We discuss an explicit two-loop calculation and have a critical look at the (non-)exponentiation and factorisation properties of the Sudakov logarithms in the Standard Model.
We discuss recent results for the asymptotic behavior of fermion scattering amplitudes in the Sudakov limit. The results include next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic electroweak corrections and are used for the analysis of fermion-antifermion pair production in e+e- annihilation at high energy. The importance of the subleading logarithmic contributions is emphasized and the fermionic contributions to the Abelian form factor at two loops are discussed.
Recent results for the asymptotic behavior of fermion scattering amplitudes in the Sudakov limit are presented including next-to-leading logarithmic corrections. These are used for the analysis of the dominant electroweak corrections to the fermion-antifermion pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at high energy.
In Next Linear Colliders at TeV scale, electroweak double logarithmic corrections, which come from the infrared behaviors of theory can not be neglected. It is well known that in QED and QCD, double logarithmic corrections are resummed to all orders, and these corrections can be exponentiated, resulting in the Sudakov form factor. However it is never trivial that double logarithmic corrections in electroweak theory can be exponentiated, because of the spontaneous breaking of symmetry and the pattern of that. We discuss the electroweak double logarithmic corrections at two loop level and explai…
Electroweak radiative corrections can be evaluated in the Sudakov approximation, a systematic high energy expansion known to be relevant for the analysis of future collider experiments in the TeV energy range. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and at next-to-leading order, Sudakov electroweak corrections satisfy remarkable relations at the one loop level. Explicit computations in component fields are available for various different $2\to 2$ processes relevant for Linear Collider or LHC physics. The Sudakov corrections turn out to be equal or closely related in several classes of pro…
For superpartner masses not much heavier than the weak scale $M=M_{\rm W}$, large logarithmic corrections of the Sudakov type arise at TeV energies. In this paper we summarize recent results of supersymmetric (susy) electroweak radiative corrections for sfermion and charged Higgs production at $e^+e^-$ colliders in the MSSM. The results are given to subleading logarithmic (SL) accuracy to all orders in perturbation theory in the ``light'' susy-mass scenario. Prospects for the determination of $\tan β\geq 10$ are discussed which is independent of soft susy-breaking terms to SL accuracy.
In perturbation theory the infrared structure of the electroweak interactions produces large corrections proportional to double logarithms log^2 (s/m^2), similar to Sudakov logarithms in QED, when the scale s is much larger than the typical mass m of the particles running in the loops. These energy growing corrections can be particularly relevant for the planned Next Linear Colliders. We study these effects in the Standard Model for the process e+ e^->f fbar and we compare them with similar corrections coming from SUSY loops.
The infrared structure of spontaneously broken gauge theories is phenomenologically very important and theoretically a challenging problem. Various attempts have been made to calculate the higher order behavior of large double-logarithmic (DL) corrections originating from the exchange of electroweak gauge bosons resulting in contradictory claims. We present results from two loop electroweak corrections for the process $g \longrightarrow f_{\rm R} {\bar f}_{\rm L}$ to DL accuracy. This process is ideally suited as a theoretical model reaction to study the effect of the mass gap of the neutral e…
We calculate the virtual electroweak Sudakov (double) logarithms at one- and two-loop level for arbitrary on-shell/on-resonance particles in the Standard Model. The associated Sudakov form factors apply in a universal way to arbitrary non-mass-suppressed electroweak processes at high energies, although this universality has to be interpreted with care. The actual calculation is performed in the temporal Coulomb gauge, where the relevant contributions from collinear-soft gauge-boson exchange are contained exclusively in the self-energies of the external on-shell/on-resonance particles. In view …
We compute the massive gauge and scalar corrections to form factors in both the Sudakov and threshold regimes up to and including two-loop orders. The corrections are calculated for processes involving two external fermions and scalars in the spontaneously broken SU(N)-Higgs model, examining a range of composite operators. Our results are general, so we discuss how our form factors are mappable from our model to the Standard Model and beyond. The effective theory formalism deployed in our work extends previous studies based on infrared evolution equations, which either neglect scalar contribut…
A complete description of W and Z boson production at high-energy hadron colliders requires the resummation of large Sudakov double logarithms which dominate the transverse momentum (q_T) distribution at small q_T. We compare different prescriptions for performing this resummation, in particular implicit impact parameter space resummation versus explicit transverse momentum space resummation. We argue that the latter method can be formulated so as to retain the advantages of the former, while at the same time allowing a smooth transition to finite order dominance at high q_T.

We study Standard Model electroweak radiative corrections for fully inclusive observables with polarized fermionic beams. Our calculations are relevant in view of the possibility for Next Generation Linear colliders of having transversely and/or longitudinally polarized beams. The case of initial transverse polarization is particularly interesting because of the interplay of infrared/collinear logarithms of different origins, related both to the nonabelian SU(2) and abelian U(1) sectors. The Standard model effects turn out to be in the 10% range at the TeV scale, therefore particularly relevan…
Electroweak radiative corrections give rise to large negative, double-logarithmically enhanced corrections in the TeV region. These are partly compensated by real radiation and, moreover, affected by selecting isospin-noninvariant external states. We investigate the impact of real gauge boson radiation more quantitatively by considering different restricted final state configurations. We consider successively a massive abelian gauge theory, a spontaneously broken SU(2) theory and the electroweak Standard Model. We find that details of the choice of the phase space cuts, in particular whether a…
As experimental particle physics becomes more and more precise, it is becoming increasingly important for Monte Carlo simulations to improve the precision of their predictions. In terms of the hard matrix element, this means calculating to a higher order in perturbation theory. To be consistent this requires both NNLO QCD corrections and NLO EW corrections to be included. There are also interference effects between these processes that are not simple to handle consistently. For a broad description of the behaviour of NLO EW corrections at high energies, the Sudakov logarithmic approach provide…
To match the expected experimental precision at future linear colliders, improved theoretical predictions beyond next-to-leading order are required. At the anticipated energy scale of sqrt(s)=1 TeV the electroweak virtual corrections are strongly enhanced by collinear-soft Sudakov logarithms of the form log^2(s/M^2), with M being the generic mass scale of the W and Z bosons. By choosing an appropriate gauge, we have developed a formalism to calculate such corrections for arbitrary electroweak processes. As an example we consider in this letter the process e^+e^- --> f fbar and study the pertur…
We study the leading log infrared behavior of electroweak corrections at TeV scale energies, that will be reached by next generation of linear colliders (NLC). We show that, contrary to what happens at typical LEP energies, it is not anymore possible to disentangle ``pure electroweak'' from ``photonic'' corrections. This means that soft QED effects do not factorize and therefore cannot be treated in the usual ``naive'' way they were accounted for in the LEP-era. The nonfactorizable effects come up first at the two loop LL level, that we calculate explicitly for a fermion source that is neutral…
We apply the strategy of regions within dimensional regularization to find functions involved in evolution equations which govern the asymptotic dynamics of the Abelian form factor and four-fermion amplitude in the SU(N) gauge theory in the Sudakov limit up to the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. The results are used for the analysis of the dominant electroweak corrections to the fermion-antifermion pair production in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation at high energy.
We investigate the scale dependence of transverse momentum dependent(TMD) gluon distribution in saturation regime. We found that in the Collins-2011 scheme, the scale dependence of small x gluon TMD is governed by the same renormalization group(RG) equation that holds at moderate or large $x$. Following the standard procedure, one then can resum both double leading logarithm and single leading logarithm in saturation regime by jointly solving the Collins-Soper equation and the RG equation.
We present an automated implementation for the calculation of one-loop double and single Sudakov logarithms stemming from electroweak radiative corrections within the Sherpa event generation framework, based on the derivation in[1]. At high energies, these logarithms constitute the leading contributions to the full NLO electroweak corrections. As examples, we show applications for relevant processes at both the LHC and future hadron colliders, namely on-shell W boson pair production, EW-induced dijet production and electron-positron production in association with four jets, providing the first…
Accounting for double-logarithmic contributions to high-energy (>> 100 GeV) e^+ e^- annihilation into a quark or a lepton pair in the kinematics where the final particles are colinear to the e^+e^- beams leading to a sizable difference between the forward and backward scattering amplitudes, i.e. to the forward-backward asymmetry. When the annihilation is accompanied by emission of n electroweak bosons in the multi-Regge kinematics, it turns out that the cross sections of the photon and Z production have the identical energy dependence and asymptotically their ratio depends only on the Weinberg…
We consider the production of SUSY scalar pairs at lepton colliders, for c.m. energies much larger than the mass of the heaviest SUSY (real or virtual) particle involved in the process. In that energy regime, we derive the leading and subleading terms of the electroweak Sudakov logarithms in the MSSM, first working at one loop with physical states and then resumming to all orders with asymptotic expansions. We show that the first order of the resummed expression reproduces the physical one loop approximation, and compute systematically the possible effects on various observables both at one lo…
A complete description of W and Z boson production at high-energy colliders requires the resummation of large Sudakov logarithms which dominate the production at small transverse momentum. Currently there are two techniques for performing this resummation: impact parameter space and transverse momentum space. We argue that the latter can be formulated in a way which retains the advantages of the former, while at the same time allowing a smooth transition to finite order dominance at high transverse momentum.
In this addendum to Phys. Rev. D 88, no. 1, 013009 (2013), we give results for the electroweak Sudakov corrections in gauge-boson production at large transverse momentum p_T at proton colliders. In order for the results to be easily usable, we provide a simple and accurate parameterization of the corrections as a function of p_T and the center-of-mass energy \sqrt{s}. Additionally, we also discuss the dependence of the electroweak corrections on the rapidity of the produced boson, and comment on the complications that arise in the photon-production case due to isolation requirements
To sum high energy leading logarithms in a consistent way, one has to impose the strong ordering in both projectile rapidity and dense target rapidity simultaneously, which results in a kinematically improved Balitsky-Kovchegov(BK) equation. We find that beyond this strong ordering region, the important sub-leading double logarithms arise at high order due to the incomplete cancellation between real corrections and virtual corrections in a t-channel calculation. Based on this observation, we further argue that these double logarithms are the Sudakov type ones, and thus can be resummed into an …
We construct an effective field theory valid for processes in which highly energetic light-like particles interact with collinear and soft degrees of freedom, using the decay B -> X_s + gamma near the endpoint of the photon spectrum, x = 2 E_gamma / m_b -> 1, as an example. Below the scale mu=m_b both soft and collinear degrees of freedom are included in the effective theory, while below the scale mu=m_b sqrt{x-y}, where 1-y is the lightcone momentum fraction of the b quark in the B meson, we match onto a theory of bilocal operators. We show that at one loop large logarithms cancel in the matc…
We present a unified derivation of the resummation of Sudakov logarithms, directly from the factorization properties of cross sections in which they occur. We rederive in this manner the well-known exponentiation of leading and nonleading logarithmic enhancements near the edge of phase space for cross sections such as deeply inelastic scattering, which are induced by an electroweak hard scattering. For QCD hard-scattering processes, such as heavy-quark production, we show that the resummation of nonleading logarithms requires in general mixing in the space of the color tensors of the hard scat…
We consider the separate effects on four fermion processes, in the TeV energy range, produced at one loop by Sudakov logarithms of universal and not universal kind, working in the 't Hooft xi=1 gauge. Summing the various vertex and box contributions allows to isolate two quite different terms. The first one is a combination of vertex and box quadratic and linear logarithms that are partially universal and partially not universal and independent of the scattering angle theta. The second one is theta-dependent, not universal, linearly logarithmic and only produced by weak boxes. We show that for …
The Standard Model (SM) prediction of the top quark forward backward asymmetry is shown to be slightly enhanced by a correction factor of 1.05 due to electroweak Sudakov (EWS) logarithms of the form (α/sin^2 θ_W)^n log^{m< 2n} (s/M_{W,Z}^2). The EWS effect on the dijet and t \bar{t} invariant mass spectra is significant, reducing the SM prediction by ~20, 10 % respectively for the highest invariant masses measured at the LHC, and changing the shape of the high-mass tail of the spectrum. These corrections significantly affect measurements of the top quark invariant mass spectrum and the search …
In future collider experiments at the TeV scale, large logarithmic corrections originating from massive boson exchange can lead to significant corrections to observable cross sections. Recently double logarithms of the Sudakov-type were resummed for spontaneously broken gauge theories and found to exponentiate. In this paper we use the virtual contributions to the Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions to obtain the next to leading order kernel of the infrared evolution equation in the fixed angle scattering regime at high energies where particle masses can be neglected. In this regime the virtu…
We study infrared QCD effects in radiative quarkonia decays. We examine the endpoint region z -> 1 of the photon spectrum. We point out a cancellation mechanism for the corrections in $α_s^n \ln^{m} (1-z)$, $m \leq 2 n$, in the short-distance coefficient for the color-singlet Fock state in the quarkonium. The cancellation is due to the coherence of the color radiation, and applies even though logarithmic contributions are present in the jet distributions associated with the decay. We comment on the implications of our results for the modeling of hadronization in the endpoint region and for the…
Future colliders will probe the electroweak theory at energies much larger than the gauge boson masses. Large double (DL) and single (SL) logarithmic virtual electroweak Sudakov corrections lead to significant effects for observable cross sections. Recently, leading and subleading universal corrections for external fermions and transverse gauge boson lines were resummed by employing the infrared evolution equation method. The results were confirmed at the DL level by explicit two loop calculations with the physical Standard Model (SM) fields. Also for longitudinal degrees of freedom the approa…
At future linear $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in the TeV range, Sudakov double logarithms originating from massive boson exchange can lead to significant corrections to the cross sections of the observable processes. These effects are important for the high precision objectives of the Next Linear Collider. We use the infrared evolution equation, based on a gauge invariant dispersive method, to obtain double logarithmic asymptotics of scattering amplitudes and discuss how it can be applied, in the case of broken gauge symmetry, to the Standard Model of electroweak processes. We discuss the dou…
We claim that factorization implies that the evolution kernel, defined by the logarithmic derivative of the N-th moment of the structure function d ln F_2^N / d ln Q^2, receives logarithmically enhanced contributions (Sudakov logs) from a single source, namely the constrained invariant mass of the jet. Available results from fixed-order calculations facilitate Sudakov resummation up to the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We use additional all-order information on the physical kernel from the large-beta_0 limit to model the behaviour of further subleading logs and explore the unce…
We compute the one-loop electroweak Sudakov corrections to the production process Z (nu bar{nu}) + n jets, with n = 1,2,3, in p p collisions at the LHC. It represents the main irreducible background to new physics searches at the energy frontier. The results are obtained at the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy by implementing the general algorithm of Denner-Pozzorini in the event generator for multiparton processes ALPGEN. For the standard selection cuts used by ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we show that the Sudakov corrections to the relevant observables can grow up to - 40% a…
We present a short comment on resummation of double-logarithmic (DL) contributions to decays of W and Z -bosons into charged fermion pairs. We show that resummation of DL corrections to the Z -boson decay leads to standard Sudakov form factor with the negative exponent independently of the boson is on-shell or off-shell. In contrast, the Sudakov exponent for the W - decay is negative (positive) when the W-boson is on-shell (off-shell). In this connection we consider applicability of the Dispersion Relations to the case when the imaginary parts contain infrared-divergent contributions.
In this manuscript, we present a complete study of the Sudakov double logarithms resummation for various hard processes in eA and pA collisions in the small-x saturation formalism. We first employ a couple of slightly different formalisms to perform the one-loop analysis of the Higgs boson production process in pA collisions, and demonstrate that Sudakov-type logarithms arise as the leading correction and that they can be systematically resummed in addition to the usual small-x resummation. We further study the Sudakov double logarithms for other processes such as heavy quark pair production a…
We present the general expressions for the resummation, up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, of Sudakov-type logarithms in processes with an arbirtrary number of hard-scattering partons. These results document the formulae used by the authors in several previous phenomenological studies. The resummation formulae presented here, which are valid for phase-space factorizable observables, determine the resummation correction in a process-independent fashion. All process dependence is encoded in the colour and flavour structure of the leading order and virtual one-loop amplitudes, and in Sud…
We study electroweak Sudakov corrections in high energy scattering, and the cancellation between real and virtual Sudakov corrections. Numerical results are given for the case of heavy quark production by gluon collisions involving the rates $gg \to t \bar t, b \bar b, t \bar b W, t \bar t Z, b \bar b Z, t \bar t H, b \bar b H$. Gauge boson virtual corrections are related to real transverse gauge boson emission, and Higgs virtual corrections to Higgs and longitudinal gauge boson emission. At the LHC, electroweak corrections become important in the TeV regime. At the proposed 100 TeV collider, …
Experiments at the future colliders LHC and ILC will, for the first time, explore electroweak reactions at energies in the TeV region, i.e. far beyond the masses of the W and Z bosons. In exclusive processes without the emission of massive gauge bosons double-logarithmic contributions, so-called Sudakov logarithms, will then become relevant. Precise theoretical predictions require the knowledge of the complete logarithmic two-loop corrections in the high energy limit, thus exceeding the approximation through the leading powers of logarithms known so far. This PhD thesis is focussed on the calc…
Through an explicit calculation of massive scalar particle (e.g., Higgs boson) production in high energy pA collisions up to one-loop order, we demonstrate that the Sudakov-type logarithms in hard processes in small-x saturation formalism can be systematically separated from the typical small-x logarithms. The generic feature of the Sudakov logarithms and all order resummation is derived. We further comment on the phenomenological implications and extension to other hard processes in the small-x calculations.
In this work we revisit the algorithm of Denner and Pozzorini for the calculation of one-loop electroweak Sudakov logarithms and we automate it in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We adapt the formulas for modern calculations, keeping light-quarks and photons strictly massless and dealing with infrared divergences via dimensional regularisation. We improve the approximation by taking into account additional logarithms that are angular dependent. We prove that an imaginary term has been previously omitted and we show that it cannot be in general neglected for $2\rightarrow n$ processes with $n>…
We study the high-energy behavior of the scattering amplitudes in quantum electrodynamics beyond the leading order of the small electron mass expansion in the leading logarithmic approximation. In contrast to the Sudakov logarithms, the mass-suppressed double-logarithmic radiative corrections are induced by a soft electron pair exchange and result in enhancement of the power-suppressed contribution. Possible applications of our result to the analysis of the high-energy processes in quantum chromodynamics is also discussed.
The two-loop Sudakov form factor is computed in a U(1) model with a massive gauge boson and a $U(1)\times U(1)$ model with mass gap. We analyze the result in the context of hard and infrared evolution equations and establish a matching procedure which relates the theories with and without mass gap setting the stage for the complete calculation of the dominant two-loop corrections to electroweak processes at high energy.
Using the known resummation of virtual corrections together with knowledge of the leading-log structure of real radiation in a parton shower, we derive analytic expressions for the resummed real radiation after they have been integrated over all of phase space. Performing a numerical analysis for both the 13 TeV LHC and a 100 TeV $pp$ collider, we show that resummation of the real corrections is at least as important as resummation of the virtual corrections, and that this resummation has a sizable effect for partonic center of mass energies exceeding $\sqrt{s} = {\cal O}$(few TeV). For parton…
Electroweak (EW) corrections at the LHC can be enhanced at high energies due to soft/collinear radiation of W and Z bosons, being dominated by Sudakov-like corrections in the form of $α_W^l\log^n(Q^2/M_W^2)$ $(n \le 2l, α_W = α/(4π\sinθ_W^2))$ when the energy scale $Q$ enters the TeV regime. Thus, the inclusion of EW corrections in LHC predictions is important for the search of possible signals of new physics in tails of kinematic distributions. EW corrections should also be taken into account in virtue of their comparable size ($\mathcal{O}(α)$) to that of higher order QCD corrections ($\math…
The hard-scattering contributions to heavy-to-light form factors at large recoil are studied systematically in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Large logarithms arising from multiple energy scales are resummed by matching QCD onto SCET in two stages via an intermediate effective theory. Anomalous dimensions in the intermediate theory are computed, and their form is shown to be constrained by conformal symmetry. Renormalization-group evolution equations are solved to give a complete leading-order analysis of the hard-scattering contributions, in which all single and double logarithms are…
We consider the higher-order resummation of Sudakov double logarithms in the presence of multiple coupled gauge interactions. The associated evolution equations depend on the coupled $β$ functions of two (or more) coupling constants $α_a$ and $α_b$, as well as anomalous dimensions that have joint perturbative series in $α_a$ and $α_b$. We discuss possible strategies for solving the system of evolution equations that arises. As an example, we obtain the complete three-loop (NNLL) QCD$\otimes$QED Sudakov evolution factor. Our results also readily apply to the joint higher-order resummation of el…
The leading and next-to-leading threshold logarithms of the QCD corrections to electroproduction of heavy quarks in single-particle inclusive kinematics are resummed to all orders in perturbation theory. The resummed cross-section is used to derive the NLO and NNLO results near threshold and their numerical impact on the charm structure function is studied.
