Let k > 2. We show that if a closed orientable 2k-manifold K, with Euler characteristic not equal to -2, admits an exact Lagrangian immersion into complex Euclidean 2k-space with one transverse double point and no other self-intersections, then K is diffeomorphic to the standard sphere. The proof combines Floer homological arguments with a detailed study of moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with boundary in a monotone Lagrangian submanifold obtained by Lagrange surgery on K.
We give an inequality of the displacement energy for exact Lagrangian immersions and the symplectic area of punctured holomorphic discs. Our approach is based on Floer homology for Lagrangian immersions and Chekanov's homotopy technique of continuations.
The Whitney immersion is a Lagrangian sphere inside the four-dimensional symplectic vector space which has a single transverse double point of Whitney self-intersection number $+1.$ This Lagrangian also arises as the Weinstein skeleton of the complement of a binodal cubic curve inside the projective plane, and the latter Weinstein manifold is thus the `standard' neighbourhood of Lagrangian immersions of this type. We classify the Lagrangians inside such a neighbourhood which are homologically essential, and which either are embedded or immersed with a single double point; they are shown to be …
We study exact Lagrangian immersions with one double point of a closed orientable manifold K into n-complex-dimensional Euclidean space. Our main result is that if the Maslov grading of the double point does not equal 1 then K is homotopy equivalent to the sphere, and if, in addition, the Lagrangian Gauss map of the immersion is stably homotopic to that of the Whitney immersion, then K bounds a parallelizable (n+1)-manifold. The hypothesis on the Gauss map always holds when n=2k or when n=8k-1. The argument studies a filling of K obtained from solutions to perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equations wi…
We show that the union of a meridian and a longitude of the symplectic 2-torus is superheavy in the sense of Entov-Polterovich. By a result of Entov-Polterovich, this implies that the product of this union and the Clifford torus of $\mathbb{C}P^n$ with the Fubini-Study symplectic form cannot be displaced by symplectomorphisms.
We introduce a joint project with Cheol-Hyun Cho on the construction of quantum-corrected moduli of Lagrangian immersions. The construction has important applications to mirror symmetry for pair-of-pants decompositions, SYZ and wall-crossing. The key ingredient is Floer-theoretical gluing between local moduli spaces of Lagrangians with different topologies.
We establish an $h$-principle for exact Lagrangian immersions with transverse self-intersections and the minimal, or near-minimal number of double points. One corollary of our result is that any orientable closed 3-manifold admits an exact Lagrangian immersion into standard symplectic 6-space $\R^6_\st$ with exactly one transverse double point. Our construction also yields a Lagrangian embedding $S^1\times S^2\to\R^6_\st$ with vanishing Maslov class.
We show that the transfer map on Floer homotopy types associated to an exact Lagrangian embedding is an equivalence. This provides an obstruction to representing isotopy classes of Lagrangian immersions by Lagrangian embeddings, which, unlike previous obstructions, is sensitive to information that cannot be detected by Floer cochains. We show this by providing a concrete computation in the case of spheres.
This paper gives a new way of constructing Landau-Ginzburg mirrors using deformation theory of Lagrangian immersions motivated by the works of Seidel, Strominger-Yau-Zaslow and Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono. Moreover we construct a canonical functor from the Fukaya category to the mirror category of matrix factorizations. This functor derives homological mirror symmetry under some explicit assumptions. As an application, the construction is applied to spheres with three orbifold points to produce their quantum-corrected mirrors and derive homological mirror symmetry. Furthermore we discover an enumerativ…
We define Lagrangian Floer cohomology over $\mathbb Z_2$-coefficients by counting pearly trajectories for graded, exact Lagrangian immersions that satisfy certain positivity condition on the index of the non-embedded points, and show that it is an invariant of the Lagrangian immersion under Hamiltonian deformations. We also show that it is naturally isomorphic to the Hamiltonian perturbed version of Lagrangian Floer cohomology as defined in [4]. As an application, we prove that the number of non-embedded points of such a Lagrangian in $\mathbb C^n$ is no less than the sum of its Betti numbers.
For an oriented isometric immersion $f:M\to S^n$ the spherical Gauss map is the Legendrian immersion of its unit normal bundle $UM^\perp$ into the unit sphere subbundle of $TS^n$, and the geodesic Gauss map $γ$ projects this into the manifold of oriented geodesics in $S^n$ (the Grassmannian of oriented 2-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$), giving a Lagrangian immersion of $UM^\perp$ into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold. We give expressions for the mean curvature vectors for both the spherical and geodesic Gauss maps in terms of the second fundamental form of $f$, and show that when $f$ has conformal sh…
We study wrapped Floer theory on product Liouville manifolds and prove that the wrapped Fukaya categories defined with respect to two different kinds of natural Hamiltonians and almost complex structures are equivalent. The implication is we can do quilted version of wrapped Floer theory, based on which we then construct functors between wrapped Fukaya categories of Liouville manifolds from certain classes of Lagrangian correspondences, by enlarging the wrapped Fukaya categories appropriately, allowing exact cylindrical Lagrangian immersions. For applications, we present a general Künneth form…
Given an immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling of a Legendrian knot, if the filling has a vanishing index and action double point, then through Lagrangian surgery it is possible to obtain a new immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling with one less double point and with genus increased by one. We show that it is not always possible to reverse the Lagrangian surgery: not every immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling with genus $g \geq 1$ and $p$ double points can be obtained from such a Lagrangian surgery on a filling of genus $g-1$ with $p+1$ double points. To show this, …
By a result due to Ziltener, there exist no closed embedded Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangians inside $\mathbb CP^n$ for the prequantisation bundle whose total space is the standard contact sphere. On the other hand, any embedded monotone Lagrangian torus has a canonical nontrivial cover which is a Bohr-Sommerfeld immersion. We draw the front projections for the corresponding Legendrian lifts inside a contact Darboux ball of the threefold covers of both the two-dimensional Clifford and Chekanov tori (the former is the Legendrian link of the Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangian cone), and compute the asso…
We derive some restrictions on the topology of a monotone Lagrangian submanifold $L\subset\mathbf{C}^n$ by making observations about the topology of the moduli space of Maslov 2 holomorphic discs with boundary on $L$ and then using Damian's theorem which gives conditions under which the evaluation map from this moduli space to $L$ has nonzero degree. In particular we prove that an orientable 3-manifold admits a monotone Lagrangian embedding in $\mathbf{C}^3$ only if it is a product, which is a variation on a theorem of Fukaya. Finally we prove an h-principle for monotone Lagrangian immersions.
We provide in this note two relevant examples of Lagrangian cobordisms. The first one gives an example of two exact Lagrangian submanifolds which cannot be composed in an exact fashion. The second one is an example of an exact Lagrangian cobordism on which all primitive of the Liouville form is not constant on the negative end and such that the positive end is a stabilisation whereas the negative end admits augmentations. These examples emphasise point (i) of the definition of exact Lagrangian cobordisms in [6]. In order to provide such examples we construct Lagrangian immersions with single d…
We explore how the invariants $J^+$, $J^-$, $\mathcal{J}_1$ and $\mathcal{J}_2$ of immersions -- generic (at most double points and only transverse intersections) planar smooth closed curves with non-vanishing derivative -- change under $k$-bifurcations ($k \ge 2 \in \mathbb{N}$), which are constructed by running $k$ times through an immersion and then perturbing it to be generic.
This paper considers the enhanced symplectic "category" for purposes of quantizing quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces, where $G$ is a compact simple Lie group. Our starting point is the well-acknowledged analogy between the cotangent bundle $T^*G$ in Hamiltonian geometry and the internally fused double $D(G)=G\times G$ in quasi-Hamiltonian geometry. Guillemin and Sternberg consider the former, studing half-densities and phase functions on its so-called character Lagrangians $Λ_{\mathcal{O}}\subseteq T^*G$. Our quasi-Hamiltonian counterpart replaces these character Lagrangians with the universal cent…
We show that a monotone Lagrangian $L$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ of minimal Maslov number $n + 1$ is homeomorphic to a double quotient of a sphere, and thus homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{RP}^n$. To prove this we use Zapolsky's canonical pearl complex for $L$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$, and various twisted versions thereof, where the twisting is determined by connected covers of $L$. The main tool is the action of the quantum cohomology of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ on the resulting Floer homologies.
We define a refined Gromov-Witten disk potential of self-transverse monotone immersed Lagrangian surfaces in a symplectic 4-manifold as an element in a capped version of the Chekanov--Eliashberg dg-algebra of the singularity links of the double points (a collection of Legendrian Hopf links). We give a surgery formula that expresses the potential after smoothing a double point. We study refined potentials of monotone immersed Lagrangian spheres in the complex projective plane and find monotone spheres that cannot be displaced from complex lines and conics by symplectomorphisms. We also derive g…
We explore Arnold's $J^+$-invariant of immersions -- planar smooth closed curves with non-vanishing derivative, at most double points and only transverse intersections -- and computation methods like Viro's sum, among others. Only basic undergraduate mathematics is needed to understand the contents of this introductory paper and everything we need that is above that is recalled or introduced. Examples, exercises and solutions are included for practice.
We prove the existence of a spectral sequence for Lagrangian Floer homology which converges to the Floer homology of the image of a Lagrangian submanifold under multiple fibred Dehn twists. The $E_1$ term of the sequence is given by the hypercube of "resolutions" of the Dehn twists involved. The proof relies on the exact triangle for fibered Dehn twists due to Wehrheim and Woodward. As applications we obtain a spectral sequences from Khovanov homology to symplectic Khovanov homology. Also when a 3-manifold $M$ is given by gluing two handlebodies by a surface diffeomorphism $ϕ$, we obtain a spe…
We show that a Lagrangian inclusion in $\mathbb C^2$ with double transverse self-intersection points and standard open Whitney umbrellas is rationally convex. As an application we show that any compact surface $S$, except $S^2$ and $\mathbb RP_2$, admits a pair of smooth complex-valued functions $f_1$, $f_2$ with the property that any continuous complex valued function on $S$ is a uniform limit of a sequence of $R_j(f_1,f_2)$, where $R_j(z_1,z_2)$ are rational functions in $\mathbb C^2$.
Inspired by Kronheimer and Mrowka's approach to monopole Floer homology, we develop a model for $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant symplectic Floer theory using equivariant almost complex structures, which admits a localization map to a twisted version of Floer cohomology in the invariant set. We then present applications to Steenrod operations on Lagrangian Floer cohomology, and to the Heegaard Floer homology of double covers of three-manifolds.
We prove that the restriction map from the subspace of regular points of the holonomy perturbed SU(2) traceless flat moduli space of a tangle in a 3-manifold to the traceless flat moduli space of its boundary marked surface is a Lagrangian immersion. A key ingredient in our proof is the use of composition in the Weinstein category, combined with the fact that SU(2) holonomy perturbations in a cylinder induce Hamiltonian isotopies. In addition, we show that $(S^2,4)$, the 2-sphere with four marked points, is its own traceless flat SU(2) moduli space.
