Over the last 40 years, multi-frequency observations, coupled with advances in theoretical modelling, have led to a much fuller understanding of the nova phenomenon. Here I give a brief review of the current state of knowledge of Classical and Recurrent Novae including their central systems; the causes and consequences of their outbursts; sub-types, and possible relationships to Type Ia Supernovae. Particular attention is paid to the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi as it shows a wealth of phenomena associated with its 2006 outburst. Finally, some open questions and avenues for future work are summarised.
V446 Her is the best example of an old nova which has developed dwarf nova eruptions in the post-nova state. We report on observed properties of the long-term light curve of V446 Her, using photometry over 19 years. Yearly averages of the outburst magnitudes shows a decline of ~0.013 mag/yr, consistent with the decline of other post-novae that do not have dwarf nova outbursts. Previous suggestions of bimodal distributions of the amplitudes and widths of the outbursts are confirmed. The outbursts occur at a mean spacing of 18 days but the range of spacings is large (13-30 days). From simulation…
The unprecedented sky coverage and observing cadence of the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) has resulted in the discovery and continued monitoring of a large sample of Galactic transients. The vast majority of these are accretion-powered dwarf nova outbursts in cataclysmic variable systems, but a small subset are thermonuclear-powered classical novae. Despite improved monitoring of the Galaxy for novae from ASAS-SN and other surveys, the observed Galactic nova rate is still lower than predictions. One way classical novae could be missed is if they are confused with the much l…
The classical nova V2491 Cyg was once suggested to be a recurrent nova. We have broadly reproduced the light curve of V2491 Cyg by a nova outburst model on a cold $1.36~M_\odot$ white dwarf (WD), which strongly suggests that V2491 Cyg is a classical nova outbursting on a cold very massive WD rather than a recurrent nova outbursting on a warmer WD like the recurrent nova RS Oph. In a long-term evolution of a cataclysmic binary, an accreting WD has been settled down to a thermal equilibrium state with the balance of gravitational energy release and neutrino loss. The central temperature of the W…
We propose a new mechanism that produces an orbital period change during a nova outburst. When the ejected material carries away the specific angular momentum of the white dwarf, the orbital period increases. A magnetic field on the surface of the secondary star forces a fraction of the ejected material to corotate with the star, and hence the binary system. The ejected material thus takes angular momentum from the binary orbit and the orbital period decreases. We show that for sufficiently strong magnetic fields on the surface of the secondary star, the total change to the orbital period coul…
The secular variation in the interval of outbursts in the following six Z Cam-type dwarf novae (including the subtype IW And-type) is investigated: Z Cam, RX And, AH Her, HL CMa, SY Cnc, and WW Cet. An analysis using the $O-C$ diagram shows that the interval of outbursts is not steady in one system. The outburst properties before standstill are the decrease in outburst interval, enhancement of the magnitude in quiescence, and disappearance of the long outburst. Meanwhile, several objects have at least two typical intervals of outbursts. These characteristics are difficult to be explained only …
Nova outbursts play an important role in the chemical evolution of galaxies, especially they are the main source of synthetic $^{13}\rm C$, $^{15}\rm N$, $^{17}\rm O$ and some radioactive isotopes like $^{22}\rm Na$ and $^{26}\rm Al$. The enrichment of He in nova ejecta indicates that the accreted material may mix with the He-shell (He-mixing). The purpose of this work is to investigate how the He-mixing affects the nova outbursts in a systematic way. We evolved a series of accreting WD models, and found that the mass fraction of H and He in nova ejecta can be influenced by different He-mixing…
High resolution spectra of postoutburst novae show multiple components of ejected gas that are kinematically distinct. We interpret the observations in terms of episodes of enhanced mass transfer originating from the secondary star that result in the formation of discrete components of circumbinary gas and accretion onto the WD that trigger nova outbursts. In this picture the concordance between absorption line velocities and emission line widths in most novae occurs as a result of the collision of the expanding nova ejecta with a larger mass of surrounding circumbinary gas. One implication of…
We have observed dwarf nova oscillations (DNOs) in OY Car during outburst, down through decline and beyond; its behaviour is similar to what we have previously seen in VW Hyi, making it only the second dwarf nova to have DNOs late in outburst that continue well into quiescence. There are also occasional examples of DNOs in deep quiescence, well away from outburst - they have properties similar to those during outburst, indicating similar physical causes and structures. We discuss the occurrence of DNOs in other dwarf novae and conclude that DNOs during quiescence are more common than often sup…
In this review, I present our current state of knowledge regarding both Classical Nova and Recurrent Nova systems. Two particular objects (V1974 Cyg and RS Oph) are chosen to illustrate the range of phenomena that may be associated with their outbursts. The wider importance of nova research is emphasised and some of the most pressing unsolved problems are summarised.
We present the analysis of hot spot brightness in light curves of the eclipsing dwarf nova IY Ursae Majoris during its normal outburst in March 2013 and in quiescence in April 2012 and in October 2015. Examination of four reconstructed light curves of the hot spot eclipses showed directly that the brightness of the hot spot changed significantly only during the outburst. The brightness of the hot spot, before and after the outburst, was on the same level. Hereby, based on the behaviour of the hot spot, IY UMa during its normal outburst follows the disk-instability model.
V476 Cyg (Nova Cyg 1920) is a bright, fast nova reaching a photographic magnitude of 2.0. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public database, I found that this nova is currently a dwarf nova with a cycle length of ~24 d. Compared to other classical novae currently in dwarf nova-type states, outbursts of V476 Cyg are rapidly rising and short with durations of a few days. Based on the AAVSO observations, this nova was probably already in the dwarf nova-type phase in 2016, 96 years after the nova eruption. I found a possible orbital period of 0.1018002(6) d using the ZTF data, which would …
M31 is an ideal laboratory for observing and studying recurrent novae. To date, there have been 18 recurrent nova discovered in M31, six of which have recurrence periods less than nine years. M31N 2017-12a (AT2017jdm) is a transient that was reported near the center of M31, with the time of outburst estimated to be 2017 December 24.141 +/- 0.42 based on constraints from previous data. Here we present the photometric observations of M31N 2017-12a, which we confirm as a recurrence of M31N 2007-10b.
We discuss the nebular phase emission during the 2011 outburst of the recurrent nova T Pyxidis and present preliminary results on the analysis of the line profiles. We also present some discussions about the binary system configurations and the X-ray emission, showing that the white dwarf mass should be larger than 0.8 M$\odot$.
CCD BVRcIc photometric observations of the 2010 outburst of the recurrent nova U Scorpii are presented. The light-curve has a smooth development characterized by t2(V)=1.8 and t3(V)=4.1 days, close to the t2(V)=2.2 and t3(V)=4.3 days of 1999 outburst. The plateau phase in 2010 has been brighter, lasting shorter and beginning earlier than in the 1999 outburst. Flickering, with an amplitude twice larger in $I_{\rm C}$ than in $B$ band, was absent on day +4.8 and +15.7, and present on day +11.8, with a time scale of about half an hour.
We search the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) archives of the two best studied dwarf novae in an attempt to find light curves for long outbursts that are extremely well-characterized. The systems are U Gem and SS Cyg. Our goal is to search for embedded precursors such as those that have been found recently in the high fidelity Kepler data for superoutbursts of some members of the SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae. For the vast majority of AAVSO data, the combination of low data cadence and large errors associated with individual measurements precludes one from making any s…
Classical novae are the results of surface thermonuclear explosions of H-rich material accreted by white dwarfs (WDs) from their low-mass main-sequence or red-giant binary companions. Chemical composition analysis of their ejecta shows that nova outbursts occur on both carbon-oxygen (CO) and oxygen-neon (ONe) WDs, and that there is cross-boundary mixing between the accreted envelope and underlying WD. We have combined the stellar evolution code MESA and post-processing nucleosynthesis tools of NuGrid into a framework that allows to produce up-to-date models of nova outbursts and compute detail…
We propose a modified color-magnitude diagram for novae in outburst, i.e., $(B-V)_0$ versus $(M_V-2.5 \log f_{\rm s})$, where $f_{\rm s}$ is the timescaling factor of a (target) nova against a comparison (template) nova, $(B-V)_0$ is the intrinsic $B-V$ color, and $M_V$ is the absolute $V$ magnitude. We dub it the time-stretched color-magnitude diagram. We carefully reanalyzed 20 novae based on the time-stretching method and revised their extinctions $E(B-V)$, distance moduli in the $V$ band $(m-M)_V$, distances $d$, and timescaling factors $f_{\rm s}$ against the template nova LV Vul. We have…
We observed the 2018 November outburst of CS Ind and confirmed that it was a genuine superoutburst with a very long [0.12471(1) d in average] superhump period. The superoutburst was preceded by a long precursor, which was recorded first time in SU UMa-type dwarf novae. We interpret that the combination of a sufficient amount of mass in the disk before the ignition of the outburst and the slow development of tidal instability near the borderline of the 3:1 resonance caused a cooling front to start before the full development of tidal instability. This finding provides another support to the rec…
Aims. We present optical spectra of the fast recurrent nova U Sco during its recent outburst, obtained within 24 hr of maximum light. Methods. We use medium resolution (R~4000) spectra taken with the with the MagE spectrograph on the Magellan (Clay) 6.5m telescope of the Las Campanas Observatories. Results. The spectrum is notable for its lack of a low ionization transient heavy element absorption system that is visible in the large majority of novae near maximum light. We suggest that this may be due to the dominance of inner Lagrangian L1 mass transfer and the absence of a circumbinary gas r…
The nova outburst experienced in 2010 by the symbiotic binary Mira V407 Cyg has been extensively studied at optical and infrared wavelengths with both photometric and spectroscopic observations. This outburst, reminiscent of similar events displayed by RS Oph, can be described as a very fast He/N nova erupting while being deeply embedded in the dense wind of its cool giant companion. The hard radiation from the initial thermonuclear flash ionizes and excites the wind of the Mira over great distances (recombination is observed on a time scale of 4 days). The nova ejecta is found to progressivel…
We present the light curve of HS 0229+8016 between 2006 and 2019 which shows that the star varies between mag 13.4 and 15.1. There were episodes lasting up to hundreds of days during which distinctive 0.6 mag cyclic variations were apparent, each lasting ca. 9.5 days. Observationally, these are very similar to the stunted outbursts seen from time to time in several nova-like cataclysmic variables, such as UU Aqr. There are two intervals of up to 166 days when these stunted outbursts appeared to reduce or even stop. These coincide with the system being up to ca. 0.7 mag fainter than usual. Prev…
Recurrent novae are binary stars in which a white dwarf accretes matter from a less evolved companion, either a red giant or a main-sequence star. They have dramatic optical brightenings of around 5-6 mag in V in less than a day, several times a century. These occur at variable and unpredictable intervals, and are followed by an optical decline over several weeks, and activity from the X-ray to the radio. The unpredictability of recurrent novae and related stellar types can hamper systematic study of their outbursts. Here we analyse the long-term lightcurve of RS Ophiuchi, a recurrent nova wit…
Despite being the prototype of its class, T Pyx is arguably the most unusual and poorly understood recurrent nova. Here, we use radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to trace the evolution of the ejecta over the course of the 2011 outburst of T Pyx. The radio emission is broadly consistent with thermal emission from the nova ejecta. However, the radio flux began rising surprisingly late in the outburst, indicating that the bulk of the radio-emitting material was either very cold, or expanding very slowly, for the first ~50 days of the outburst. Considering a plausible ran…
We found that the 1899 nova V606 Aql currently shows dwarf nova outbursts with a typical cycle length of 270 d and amplitudes of ~1.5 mag using Public Data Release of Zwicky Transient Facility observations. The low mass-transfer rate in quiescence has been suggested to explain the large eruption amplitude (Tappert et al., 2016), and the present detection of dwarf nova outbursts supports this interpretation. The transition to the dwarf nova state more than 100 yr after the nova eruption gives credence to the hibernation scenario. The absolute magnitude estimated from dwarf nova outbursts sugges…
We report spectroscopic observations of the $Hα$ emission line of the recurrent nova RS~Oph obtained between 12 and 23 August 2021 during the recent outburst. On the basis of the sharp P~Cyg profile superimposed onto the strong H-alpha emission, we estimate that the outflowing velocity of the material surrounding RS Oph is in the range 32 km/s < V_{out} < 68 km/s. The new GAIA distance indicates that the red giant should be probably classified in between II and III luminosity class. The spectra are available upon request from the authors and on Zenodo.
RS Oph has persistently displayed flickering at optical wavelengths when observed away from its repeating nova outbursts. During the 2006 eruption the flickering disappeared, and this repeated during the recent 2021 event. We have been monitoring RS Oph looking for the reappearance of flickering at B-band following the 2021 outburst. The flickering was still absent (sigma(B)<0.002 mag) on day +210 (counted from nova optical maximum), appeared at sigma(B)=0.008 mag on day +224, and raised to sigma(B)=0.029 mag on day +250. On following dates the amplitude remained large, although fluctuating. T…
LS And was a transient discovered in 1971 in the M31 region and it has been argued whether it could be an intergalactic nova or a dwarf nova. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data, I found that the object underwent the second known outburst in 2022 April. The behavior was that of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova with a long fading tail and the light curves of the 1971 and 2022 outbursts matched very well. The light curves suggest that LS And is a typical WZ Sge-type dwarf nova near (but before reaching) the period minimum of cataclysmic variables. The true observed peak of the 1971 outburst w…
The Outburst Catalogue contains a wide variety of observational properties for 722 dwarf nova-type (DN) cataclysmic variables (CVs) and 309 CVs of other types from the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey. In particular, it includes the apparent outburst and quiescent V-band magnitudes, duty cycles, limits on the recurrence time, upper- and lower-limits on the distance and absolute quiescent magnitudes, colour information, orbital parameters, and X-ray counterparts. These properties were determined by means of a classification script presented in this paper. The DN in the catalogue show a corre…
The nova outburst of V407 Cyg in 2010 Mar. 10 was the first observed for this star but its close resemblance to the well known symbiotic-like recurrent nova RS Oph suggests that it is also a member of this rare type of Galactic novae. The nova was the first detected at $γ$-ray energies and is the first known nova explosion for this system. The extensive multiwavelength coverage of this outburst makes it an ideal comparison with the few other outbursts known for similar systems. We extend our previous analysis of the Mira and the expanding shock from the explosion to detail the time development…
Nova explosions occur on the white dwarf component of a Cataclysmic Variable binary stellar system that is accreting matter lost by its companion. When sufficient material has been accreted by the white dwarf, a thermonuclear runaway occurs and ejects material in what is observed as a Classical Nova explosion. We describe both the recent advances in our understanding of the progress of the outburst and outline some of the puzzles that are still outstanding. We report on the effects of improving both the nuclear reaction rate library and including a modern nuclear reaction network in our one-di…
The reported positions of 964 suspected nova eruptions in M31 recorded through the end of calendar year 2013 have been compared in order to identify recurrent nova candidates. To pass the initial screen and qualify as a recurrent nova candidate two or more eruptions were required to be coincident within 0.1', although this criterion was relaxed to 0.15' for novae discovered on early photographic patrols. A total of 118 eruptions from 51 potential recurrent nova systems satisfied the screening criterion. To determine what fraction of these novae are indeed recurrent the original plates and publ…
The 2006 outburst of GK Perseii differed significantly at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths from typical outbursts of this object. We present multi-wavelength (X-ray, UV and optical) Swift and AAVSO data, giving unprecedented broad-band coverage of the outburst, allowing us to follow the evolution of the longer-than-normal 2006 outburst across these wavelengths. In the optical and UV we see a triple-peaked morphology with maximum brightness ~1.5 magnitudes lower than in previous years. In contrast, the peak hard X-ray flux is the same as in previous outbursts. We resolve this dichotomy by de…
Following the pulsation spectrum of a white dwarf through the heating and cooling involved in a dwarf nova outburst cycle provides a unique view of the changes to convective driving that take place on timescales of months versus millenia for non-accreting white dwarfs. In 2019 January the dwarf nova V386 Ser (one of a small number containing an accreting, pulsating white dwarf), underwent a large amplitude outburst. Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra were obtained 7 and 13 months after outburst along with optical ground-based photometry during this interval and high-speed photometry at…
We report the discovery of a new dwarf nova and our observations of its first confirmed superoutburst during 2009 October. The outburst amplitude was 6 magnitudes. The main outburst lasted 17 days and was followed 4 days later by a remarkable rebrightening. Superhumps were present during the main outburst, which confirms that it belongs to the SU UMa family. Initially the mean superhump period was Psh = 0.06965(17) d, but analysis of the O-C residuals showed a dramatic evolution in Psh during the outburst. During the first two-thirds of the plateau phase the period increased with dPsh/dt = +1.…
We present near-IR observations of the 2010 outburst of U Sco. JHK photometry is presented on ten consecutive days starting from 0.59 days after outburst. Such photometry can gainfully be integrated into a larger database of other multi-wavelength data which aim to comprehensively study the evolution of U Sco. Early near-IR spectra, starting from 0.56 days after outburst, are presented and their general characteristics discussed. Early in the eruption, we see very broad wings in several spectral lines, with tails extending up to ~10000km/s along the line of sight; it is unexpected to have a no…
Optical (BVRI) photometry of the first three weeks of the 2016 outburst of the recurrent Nova LMC 1968 is presented and discussed. The 2016 I-band light-curve is an exact replica, even in the most minute details, of that for the 2010 eruption. The maximum is inferred to have occurred on 2016 Jan 21.2 at I=11.5 mag, corresponding to an absolute magnitude M(I)=-7.15. A ~1 day plateau is present in all bands about six days past optical maximum, simultaneous with the emergence of super-soft X-ray emission in Swift observations, signalling the widespread ionization of the ejecta. The nova entered a…
We report on the time variation of SiO maser emission from the symbiotic stellar system V407 Cyg after the classical nova outburst on 2010 March 10. Although both the SiO $J=1$--0 $v=1$ and 2 lines at 43.122 and 42.821 GHz were found previously in the envelope of a mira in the binary system, only weak emission of the $J=1$--0 $v=2$ line has continuously been detectable after the nova outburst. The line profile exhibited a dramatic change several weeks after the burst; the component on the higher-velocity side of the systemic velocity disappeared two weeks after the burst, and a new persistent …
Two types of nova evolutions can be realized in low mass white dwarfs of ~0.5-0.7 M_sun, i.e., an evolution with optically thick winds like in usual classical novae, or an another type of evolution without them like in the symbiotic nova PU Vul. The latter type is characterized by spectra of no indication of strong winds as well as a long-lasted flat optical peak in its light curve. We propose a transition from no-optically-thick-wind evolution to usual evolution with optically thick winds as a new outburst model for slow novae that show a relatively long-lasted multipeak phase followed by a w…
We report the search for 7Be isotope in the outbursts of the classical nova V6595 Sgr by means of high resolution UVES observations taken at the ESO VLT in April 2021, about two weeks after discovery and under difficult circumstances due to the pandemic. Narrow absorption components with velocities at about -2620 and -2820 km/s, superposed on broader and shallow absorption, are observed in the outburst spectra for the 7BeII 313.0583, 313.1228 nm doublet resonance lines, as well as in several other elements such as CaII, FeI, MgI, NaI, HI but LiI. Using CaII K line as a reference element, we in…
I will explain why most novae show a sharp optical peak in the light curve, whereas a small number of novae, such as PU Vul, shows a long-lasted flat optical maximum. Re-examination of occurrence condition of optically thick winds clarifies that hydrostatic evolutions, in which optically thick winds are suppressed, are realized during nova outbursts on low mass white dwarfs (WDs) (less than about 0.7 Mo). In such a case, a nova outburst evolves very slowly, because of no strong mass-ejection, and stays at low temperature stage a long time, which results in a long-lasted flat optical peak. This…
Novae are cataclysmic variables driven by accretion of H-rich material onto a white-dwarf (WD) star from its low-mass main-sequence binary companion. New time-domain observational capabilities, such as the Palomar Transient Factory and Pan-STARRS, have revealed a diversity of their behaviour that should be theoretically addressed. Nova outbursts depend sensitively on nuclear physics data, and more readily available nova simulations are needed in order to effectively prioritize experimental effort in nuclear astrophysics. In this paper we use the MESA stellar evolution code to construct multicy…
We reviewed the light curves of 10 known recurrent novae (RNs) in the modified scales of the "logarithmic of time, amplitude of outburst". A unified rule was established to normalize the time scale. Confirmation of the known result: in a series of recurrent outbursts, the light curve of nova retains its shape, was realized by distinguishing three groups amongst these 10 novae. The CI Aql (+V2487 Oph) and T Pyx (+ IM Nor) groups contain by one additional member. The V745 Sco group includes V394 CrA and V3890 Sgr. Three RNs: T CrB, RS Oph and U Sco, have its own uniqueness. After comparing the l…
We study the spectroscopic and ionized structural evolution of T Pyx during its 2011 outburst, and also study the variation in degree of polarization during its early phase. Optical spectroscopic data of this system obtained from day 1.28--2415.62 since discovery, and optical, broadband imaging polarimetric observations obtained from day 1.36--29.33 during the early phases of the outburst are used in the study. The physical conditions and the geometry of the ionized structure of the nova ejecta has been modelled for a few epochs using the photo-ionization code, CLOUDY in 1D and pyCloudy in 3D.…
We present here, for the first time, a 2D study of the overshoot convective mechanism in nova outbursts for a wide range of possible compositions of the layer underlying the accreted envelope. Previous surveys studied this mechanism only for solar composition matter accreted on top of carbon oxygen (C-O) white dwarfs. Since, during the runaway, mixing with carbon enhances the hydrogen burning rates dramatically, one should question whether significant enrichment of the ejecta is possible also for other underlying compositions (He, O, Ne, Mg), predicted by stellar evolution models. We simulated…
We analyse four light curves obtained at high time resolution (~ 0.1 s) with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope, at the ends of two normal outbursts and one superoutburst of the dwarf nova VW Hyi. All of these contain at least some Dwarf Nova Oscillations (DNOs), which, when at their highest amplitudes, are seen in unprecedented detail. In addition to the expected DNOs with periods > 20 s we find a previously unknown modulation at 13.39 s, but none at shorter periods. The various DNOs and their interaction with the longer period Quasi-periodic Oscillations are interpreted in terms of th…
We present photometric study of NY Ser, an in-the-gap SU UMa-type nova, in 2002 and 2013. We determined the duration of the superoutburst and the mean superhump period to be 18 d and 0.10458 d, respectively. We detected in 2013 that NY Ser showed two distinct states separated by the superoutburst. A state of rather infrequent normal outbursts lasted at least 44 d before the superoutburst and a state of frequent outbursts started immediately after the superoutburst and lasted at least for 34 d. Unlike a typical SU UMa star with bimodal distribution of the outbursts duration, NY Ser displayed a …
We report unfiltered photometry during the first confirmed superoutburst of the recently discovered dwarf nova, SDSS J073208.11+413008.7 and conclude that it is a member of the SU UMa family. At its brightest, the star was magnitude 15.7. The outburst amplitude was nearly 5 magnitudes and it lasted about 14 days. We determined the mean superhump period from our first 3 nights of observations as Psh = 0.07979(19) d, however analysis of the O-C residuals showed a dramatic evolution in Psh during the outburst. During the first part of the plateau phase the period increased with dPsh/dt = +2.81(9)…
A spectrum of the quiescent counterpart of the Recurrent Nova candidate M31N 1966-08a (= M31N 1968-10c) obtained with LRS2 on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope reveals the object to be a foreground Galactic dMe flare star, and not a nova in M31.
Fourteen years after its eruption as a classical nova (CN), V1047 Cen (Nova Cen 2005) began an unusual re-brightening in 2019 April. The amplitude of the brightening suggests that this is a dwarf nova (DN) eruption in a CN system. Very few CNe have had DN eruptions within decades of the main CN outburst. The 14 years separating the CN and DN eruptions of V1047 Cen is the shortest of all instances recorded thus far. Explaining this rapid succession of CN and DN outbursts in V1047 Cen may be challenging within the framework of standard theories for DN outbursts. Following a CN eruption, the mass…
The luminosity, light curve, post--maximum spectrum, and lack of a progenitor on deep pre-outburst images suggest that SN 2010U was a luminous, fast nova. Its outburst magnitude is consistent with that for a fast nova using the Maximum Magnitude-Rate of Decline relationship for classical novae.
We present Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory infrared observations of the recurrent nova T Pyx during its 2011 eruption, complemented by ground-base optical-infrared photometry. We find that the eruption has heated dust in the pre-existing nebulosity associated with T Pyx. This is most likely interstellar dust swept up by T Pyx - either during previous eruptions or by a wind - rather than the accumulation of dust produced during eruptions.

We present our photometric studies of the newly discovered optical transient, OT J012059.6+325545, which underwent a large outburst between 2010 November and 2011 January. The amplitude of the outburst was about 8 mag. We performed simultaneous multi-color photometry by using g', Rc, and i'-band filters from the early stage of the outburst. The time resolved photometry during the early stage revealed periodic variations with double-peaked profiles, which are referred to as early superhumps, with amplitudes of about 0.08 mag. After the rapid fading from the main outburst, we found rebrightening…
Classical novae are the results of surface thermonuclear explosions of hydrogen accreted by white dwarfs (WDs) from their low-mass main-sequence or red-giant binary companions. Chemical composition analysis of their ejecta shows that nova outbursts occur on both carbon-oxygen (CO) and more massive oxygen-neon (ONe) WDs, and that there is cross-boundary mixing between the accreted envelope and underlying WD. We demonstrate that the state-of-the-art stellar evolution code MESA and post-processing nucleosynthesis tools of NuGrid can successfully be used for modeling of CO and ONe nova outbursts a…
