We reviewed the light curves of 10 known recurrent novae (RNs) in the modified scales of the "logarithmic of time, amplitude of outburst". A unified rule was established to normalize the time scale. Confirmation of the known result: in a series of recurrent outbursts, the light curve of nova retains its shape, was realized by distinguishing three groups amongst these 10 novae. The CI Aql (+V2487 Oph) and T Pyx (+ IM Nor) groups contain by one additional member. The V745 Sco group includes V394 CrA and V3890 Sgr. Three RNs: T CrB, RS Oph and U Sco, have its own uniqueness. After comparing the light curves of galactic novae with the light curves of some novae of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), we selected several candidates for recurrent novae in addition to 3 known recurrent novae in these galaxies. Assuming that the physical characteristics of the novae in the group coincide, we estimated the absolute magnitudes of the galactic novae: CI Aql and V2847 Oph have absolute magnitudes M_V=-7.5 mag, IM Nor and T Pyx - M_V=-7.2 mag, V3890 Sgr - M_V=-7.9 mag, U Sco - M_I=-9.0 mag. The comparison of the summarized light curves of recurrent novae with the light curves of some low-amplitude classical novae allowed us amongst the last to distinguish the list of 26 candidates in recurrent novae. Three of them are known from lists of other authors. An interesting example is the V1017 Sgr, which erupted in 1919 as a nova of the T Pyx type, and which also shows less bright outbursts classified as dwarf nova outbursts.
In this talk we present early decline and nebular spectra of the recurrent novae YY Dor and nova LMC 2009. These and a few other recurrent novae of the same type, share similar spectral characteristics and evolution. We will critically discuss those common features suggesting same white dwarf progenitor and post outburst phases for all of them.
The reported positions of 964 suspected nova eruptions in M31 recorded through the end of calendar year 2013 have been compared in order to identify recurrent nova candidates. To pass the initial screen and qualify as a recurrent nova candidate two or more eruptions were required to be coincident within 0.1', although this criterion was relaxed to 0.15' for novae discovered on early photographic patrols. A total of 118 eruptions from 51 potential recurrent nova systems satisfied the screening criterion. To determine what fraction of these novae are indeed recurrent the original plates and publ…
Recurrent novae are binaries harboring a very massive white dwarf (WD), as massive as the Chandrasekhar mass, because of their short recurrence periods of nova outbursts of 10-100 years. Thus, recurrent novae are considered as candidates of progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). In fact, the SN Ia PTF11kx showed evidence that its progenitor is a symbiotic recurrent nova. The binary parameters of recurrent novae have been well determined, especially for the ones with frequent outbursts, U Sco and RS Oph, which provide useful information on the elementary processes in binary evolution towar…
We performed simultaneous observations in 3 bands (UBV) of the flickering variability of the recurrent novae RS Oph and T CrB at quiescence. Using new and published data, we compare the colours of the flickering in cataclysmic variables and symbiotic recurrent novae. We find a difference between the colours of the flickering source in these two types of accreting white dwarfs. The detected difference is highly significant with $ p-value \approx 2 \times 10^{-6}$ for the distributions of $(U-B)_0$ colour and $p \approx 3 \times 10^{-5}$ on (U-B) versus (B-V) diagram. The possible physical reaso…
Models have long predicted that the frequency-averaged masses of white dwarfs in Galactic classical novae are twice as large as those of field white dwarfs. Only a handful of dynamically well-determined nova white dwarf masses have been published, leaving the theoretical predictions poorly tested. The recurrence time distributions and mass accretion rate distributions of novae are even more poorly known. To address these deficiencies, we have combined our extensive simulations of nova eruptions with the Strope et al (2010) and Schaefer et al (2010) databases of outburst characteristics of Gala…
We analyzed optical, UV, and X-ray light curves of 14 recurrent and very fast novae in our galaxy, Magellanic Clouds, and M31, and obtained their distances and white dwarf (WD) masses. Among the 14 novae, we found that eight novae host very massive ($\gtrsim 1.35 M_\odot$) WDs and are candidates of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors. We confirmed that the same timescaling law and time-stretching method as in galactic novae can be applied to extra-galactic fast novae. We classify the four novae, V745 Sco, T CrB, V838 Her, and V1534 Sco, as the V745 Sco type (rapid-decline), the two novae, RS…
We report studies of several novae which are known or suspected to be recurrent. We discuss our morpho-kinematical modelling of the evolution of the optical spectra taken early after outburst for two recent novae. In the case of the known RN RS Oph, this is also coupled with \it HST imaging. Results support the hypothesis that remnant shaping occurs very early in a nova outburst and we also derive the structures (including inclination) and velocity field of the remnants. Overall, these results emphasise the need for coordinated imaging and spectrometry, although not always possible, if we are …
In this review, I present our current state of knowledge regarding both Classical Nova and Recurrent Nova systems. Two particular objects (V1974 Cyg and RS Oph) are chosen to illustrate the range of phenomena that may be associated with their outbursts. The wider importance of nova research is emphasised and some of the most pressing unsolved problems are summarised.
A distinguishing trait of the three known Galactic recurrent novae with the shortest orbital periods, T Pyx, IM Nor, and CI Aql, is that their optical decline time-scales are significantly longer than those of the other recurrent systems. On the other hand, some estimates of the mass of the ejecta, the velocity of the ejecta, and the duration of the soft X-rays emission of these systems are of the order of those of the other recurrent systems and the fast classical novae. We put forth a tentative explanation of this phenomenon. We propose that in these systems part of the material transferred …
Recurrent novae (RNe) are cataclysmic variables with two or more nova eruptions within a century. Classical novae (CNe) are similar systems with only one such eruption. Many of the so-called 'CNe' are actually RNe for which only one eruption has been discovered. Since RNe are candidate Type Ia supernova progenitors, it is important to know whether there are enough in our galaxy to provide the supernova rate, and therefore to know how many RNe are masquerading as CNe. To quantify this, we collected all available information on the light curves and spectra of a Galactic, time-limited sample of 2…
We analyse long-term optical photometry for two Galactic recurrent novae (V745 Sco and V3890 Sgr) and one Large Magellanic Cloud object (Nova LMC 1990b) observed over several years by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) sky survey. We do not find variability with the previously claimed orbital period of V745 Sco. This voids previous findings based on this value (e.g. the distance determination). The quiescence variability of this object is dominated by semiregular pulsations of the red giant secondary (with periods of 136.5 and 77.4 d). The photometry of Nova LMC 1990b reveals …
We have examined the optical/X-ray light curves of seven well-observed recurrent novae, V745 Sco, M31N 2008-12a, LMC N 1968, U Sco, RS Oph, LMC N 2009a, T Pyx, and one recurrent nova candidate LMC N 2012a. Six novae out of the eight show a simple relation that the duration of supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase is 0.70 times the total duration of the outburst ($=$ X-ray turnoff time), i.e., $t_{\rm SSS}=0.70 t_{\rm off}$, the total duration of which ranges from 10 days to 260 days. These six recurrent novae show a broad rectangular X-ray light curve shape, first half a period of which is highly…
The mass growth rate of mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs) is a key factor in binary evolution scenarios toward Type Ia supernovae. Many authors have reported very different WD mass increasing rates. In this review, we clarify the reasons for such divergence, some of which come from a lack of numerical techniques, usage of old opacities, different assumptions for binary configurations, inadequate initial conditions, and unrealistic mass-loss mechanisms. We emphasize that these assumptions should be carefully chosen in calculating the long-term evolution of accreting WDs. Importantly, the mass-l…
Novae are the observable outcome of a transient thermonuclear runaway on the surface of an accreting white dwarf in a close binary system. Their high peak luminosity renders them visible in galaxies out beyond the distance of the Virgo Cluster. Over the past century, surveys of extragalactic novae, particularly within the nearby Andromeda Galaxy, have yielded substantial insights regarding the properties of their populations and sub-populations. The recent decade has seen the first detailed panchromatic studies of individual extragalactic novae and the discovery of two probably related sub-gro…
Of the approximately 400 known Galactic classical novae, only ten of them, the recurrent novae, have been seen to erupt more than once. At least eight of these recurrents are known to harbor evolved secondary stars, rather than the main sequence secondaries typical in classical novae. In this paper, we propose a new nova classification system, based solely on the evolutionary state of the secondary, and not (like the current schemes) based on the properties of the outbursts. Using archival optical and near-infrared photometric observations of a sample of thirty eight quiescent Galactic novae w…
In this review I summarize the observational attempts done so far to unveil the nature of the progenitor system/s of Type Ia Supernovae. In particular, I focus on the most recent developments that followed the alleged detection of circumstellar material around a few events, and on the link this possibly establishes with recurrent novae. In this framework, I then discuss the case of RS Oph, what we know of its circumstellar environment, and what this is telling us about its supposed connection to Type Ia supernova explosions.
In recent years, recurrent nova eruptions are often observed very intensely in wide range of wavelengths from radio to optical to X-rays. Here I present selected highlights from recent multi-wavelength observations. The enigma of T Pyx is at the heart of this paper. While our current understanding of CV and symbiotic star evolution can explain why certain subset of recurrent novae have high accretion rate, that of T Pyx must be greatly elevated compared to the evolutionary mean. At the same time, we have extensive data to be able to estimate how the nova envelope was ejected in T Pyx, and it t…
All novae recur, but only a handful have been observed in eruption more than once. These systems, the recurrent novae (RNe), are among the most extreme examples of novae. RNe have long been thought of as potential type Ia supernova progenitors, and their claim to this 'accolade' has recently been strengthened. In this short review RNe will be presented within the framework of the maximum magnitude-rate of decline (MMRD) phase-space. Recent work integrating He-flashes into nova models, and the subsequent growth of the white dwarf, will be explored. This review also presents an overview of the G…
We present the result of trawling through the WISE archive for data on classical and recurrent novae. The data show a variety of spectral energy distributions, including stellar photospheres, dust and probable line emission. During the mission WISE also detected some novae which erupted subsequent to the survey, providing information about the progenitor systems.
We examine the properties of white dwarfs (WDs) accreting hydrogen-rich matter in and near the stable burning regime of accretion rates as modeled by time-dependent calculations done with Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). We report the stability boundary for WDs of masses between 0.51 solar masses and 1.34 solar masses as found via time-dependent calculations. We also examine recurrent novae that are accreting at rates close to, but below, the stable burning limit and report their recurrence times and ignition masses. Our dense grid in accretion rates finds the expected m…
According to recent theoretical studies, classical novae are expected to erupt every ~$10^5$ years, while the recurrence time scale of modern recurrent novae (N_r) stars ranges from 10 to ~100 years. To bridge this huge gap in our knowledge (three orders of magnitude in time scales), it appears attractive to consider historical data: In Far Eastern sources, we searched for brightening events at different epochs but similar positions that possibly refer to recurrent nova eruptions. Probing a sample of ~185 Asian observations from ~500 BCE to 1700 CE, we present a method to systematically filter…
The presentation of the light curves of the novae on the logarithmic scale of the radius of the shell ejected during the outburst and in the scale of the amplitude of the outburst simplified the review of the light curves of all the known, about 500, classical novae of our Galaxy and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. As a result, the modified light curves about of 250 classical novae were grouped into 7 typical groups with subgroups defined by the light curves of prototypes. The largest group is the DQ Her group with V1280 Sco as the main prototype and the key to grouping. Novae of this g…
Recurrent novae are star systems in which a massive white dwarf accretes material at such a high rate that it undergoes thermonuclear runaways every 1 - 100 years. They are the only class of novae in which the white dwarf can grow in mass, making some of these systems strong Type Ia supernova progenitor candidates. Almost all known recurrent novae are long-period (P_orb > 12 hrs) binary systems in which the requisite mass supply rate can be provided by an evolved (sub-)giant donor star. However, at least two recurrent novae are short-period (P_orb < 3 hrs) binaries in which mass transfer would…
Unique Nova Centauri 2005, V1047 Cen, by a form of the modified light curve was included into the CP Pup group. It means that the re-brightening in 2019 occurred still during the finishal stage of the 2005 outburst and can be connected with the current activity of the post-nova. The light curve of V1047 Cen in 2019 as a separate event is some details similar to the HR Del, Nova Del 1967, and also it is distinguish considerable from dwarf nova outbursts in post-nova systems (GK Per, etc.). There is proposed possible correct identification of Nova Sgr 1970, V3645 Sgr, which was included into the…
I report on the discovery of the orbital periods of three recurrent novae in our galaxy. V745 Sco has an orbital period of 510+-20 days with ellipsoidal modulations, based on SMARTS photometry from 2004-2008. V3890 Sgr has an orbital period of 519.7+-0.3 days with ellipsoidal modulations and a shallow eclipse, based primarily on SMARTS and AAVSO photometry from 1995-2008, but also extending back to 1899 with archival plates. In addition, a sinusoidal modulation of amplitude 0.2 mag and period 103.8+-0.4 days is seen mainly in the red, with this attributed to ordinary pulsations in the giant co…
There is increasing evidence that the geometry, and not only the filling factors, of nova ejecta is important in the interpretation of their spectral and photometric developments. Ensembles of spectra and light curves have provided general typographies. This Letter suggests how these can be unified. The observed spread in the maximum magnitude - rate of decline (MMRD) relation is argued to result from the range of opening angles and inclination of the ejecta, and not only to their masses and velocities. The spectroscopic classes can be similarly explained and linked to the behavior of the light…
I collect virtually all photometry of the ten known galactic recurrent novae (RNe) and their 37 known eruptions. This consists of my modern measures of nearly all archival plates (providing the only data for half of 37 known eruptions), my own 10,000 CCD magnitudes from 1987 to present (providing virtually all of the magnitudes in quiescence for seven RNe), over 140,000 visual magnitude estimates recorded by amateur astronomers (who discovered half the known eruptions), and the small scattering of magnitudes from all the literature. From this, I produce various uniform products; (1) BVRIJHK co…
We continue our study of the physical properties of the recurrent nova T Pyx, focussing on the structure of the ejecta in the nebular stage of expansion during the 2011 outburst. The nova was observed contemporaneously with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), at high resolution spectroscopic resolution (R ~ 65000) on 2011 Oct. 11 and 2012 Apr. 8 (without absolute flux calibration), and with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, at high resolution (R ~ 30000) on 2011 Oct. 10 and 2012 Mar. 28 (absolute fluxes). We use standard plasma diagnostics (e.g.…
Recurrent novae are binary stars in which a white dwarf accretes matter from a less evolved companion, either a red giant or a main-sequence star. They have dramatic optical brightenings of around 5-6 mag in V in less than a day, several times a century. These occur at variable and unpredictable intervals, and are followed by an optical decline over several weeks, and activity from the X-ray to the radio. The unpredictability of recurrent novae and related stellar types can hamper systematic study of their outbursts. Here we analyse the long-term lightcurve of RS Ophiuchi, a recurrent nova wit…
The recurrent nova RS Oph underwent a new outburst on August 8, 2021, reaching a visible brightness of V = 4.8 mag. Observations of the 2021 outburst made with the high resolution UVES spectrograph at the Kueyen-UT2 telescope of ESO-VLT in Paranal enabled detection of the possible presence of 7Be freshly made in the thermonuclear runaway reactions. The 7Be yields can be estimated in N(Be)/N(H) = 5.7 x 10^(-6), which are close to the lowest yields measured in classical novae so far. 7Be is short-lived and decays only into 7Li. By means of a spectrum taken during the nebular phase we estimated a…
Symbiotic binaries are systems containing white dwarfs (WDs) and red giants. Symbiotic novae are those systems in which thermonuclear eruptions occur on the WD components. These are to be distinguished from events driven by accretion disk instabilities analogous to dwarf novae eruptions in cataclysmic variable outbursts. Another class of symbiotic systems are those in which the WD is extremely luminous and it seems likely that quiescent nuclear burning is ongoing on the accreting WD. A fundamental question is the secular evolution of the WD. Do the repeated outbursts or quiescent burning in th…
I report on the cumulative results from a program started 24 years ago designed to measure the orbital period change of recurrent novae (RNe) across an eruption. The goal is to use the orbital period change to measure the mass ejected during each eruption as the key part of trying to measure whether the RNe white dwarfs are gaining or losing mass over an entire eruption cycle, and hence whether they can be progenitors for Type Ia supernovae. This program has now been completed for two eclipsing RNe; CI Aquilae (CI Aql) across its eruption in 2000 and U Scorpii (U Sco) across its eruption in 19…
We report the results of a survey of M31 novae in quiescence. This is the first catalog of extragalactic systems in quiescence to be published, and contains data for 38 spectroscopically confirmed novae from 2006 to 2012. We used Liverpool Telescope (LT) images of each nova during eruption to define an accurate position for each system. These positions were then matched to archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and we performed photometry on any resolved objects that were coincident with the eruption positions. The survey aimed to detect quiescent systems with red giant secondaries, as o…
We present models of spherically symmetric recurrent nova shells interacting with circumstellar material in a symbiotic system composed of a red giant expelling a wind, and a white dwarf accreting from this material. Recurrent nova eruptions periodically eject material at high velocities ($\gtrsim 10^3$ km/s) into the red giant wind profile, creating a decelerating shock wave as circumstellar material is swept up. High circumstellar material densities cause the shocked wind and ejecta to have very short cooling times of days to weeks. Thus, the late time evolution of the shell is determined by…
Models of nova outbursts suggest that an X-ray flash should occur just after hydrogen ignition. However, this X-ray flash has never been observationally confirmed. We present four theoretical light curves of the X-ray flash for two very massive white dwarfs (WDs) of 1.380 and 1.385 M_sun and for two recurrence periods of 0.5 and 1 years. The duration of the X-ray flash is shorter for a more massive WD and for a longer recurrence period. The shortest duration of 14 hours (0.6 days) among the four cases is obtained for the 1.385 M_sun WD with one year recurrence period. In general, a nova explos…
Recurrent novae (RNe) play an important role as one of the suspected progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae (SNe) which are used as primary distance indicators in cosmology. Thus, it is important to investigate the nature of their central binary systems to determine the relation between the parameters of the central system and outburst type, and finally ascertain the population of novae that might be available to give rise to the progenitors of Type Ia SNe. The details of the preliminary investigation looking for characteristics that may distinguish recurrent and classical novae (CNe) system…
After an optical peak, a classical or recurrent nova settles into a brief (days to years) period of quasi-stable thermonuclear burning in a compact configuration nearly at the white dwarf (WD) radius. During this time, the underlying WD becomes visible as a strong emitter of supersoft X-rays. Observations during this phase have revealed oscillations in the X-ray emission with periods on the order of tens of seconds. A proposed explanation for the source of these oscillations are internal gravity waves excited by nuclear reactions at the base of the hydrogen-burning layer. In this work, we pres…
Of the 350 or more known Galactic classical novae, only a handful of them, the recurrent novae, have been observed in outburst more than once. At least eight of these recurrents are known to harbour evolved secondary stars, rather than the main sequence secondaries typical in classical novae. Here we present a selection of the work and rationale that led to the proposal of a new nova classification scheme based not on the outburst properties but on the nature of the quiescent system. Also outlined are the results of a photometric survey of a sample of quiescent Galactic novae, showing that the…
We have monitored the return to quiescence of novae previously observed in outburst as supersoft X-ray sources, with optical photometry of the intermediate polar (IP) V4743 Sgr and candidate IP V2491 Cyg, and optical spectroscopy of these two and seven other systems. Our sample includes classical and recurrent novae, short period (few hours), intermediate period (1-2 days) and long period (symbiotic) binaries. The light curves of V4743 Sgr and V2491 Cyg present clear periodic modulations. For V4743 Sgr, the modulation occurs with the beat of the rotational and orbital periods. If the period me…
M31 is an ideal laboratory for observing and studying recurrent novae. To date, there have been 18 recurrent nova discovered in M31, six of which have recurrence periods less than nine years. M31N 2017-12a (AT2017jdm) is a transient that was reported near the center of M31, with the time of outburst estimated to be 2017 December 24.141 +/- 0.42 based on constraints from previous data. Here we present the photometric observations of M31N 2017-12a, which we confirm as a recurrence of M31N 2007-10b.
We present optical light curves of twenty-nine novae in M31 during the 2009 and 2010 observing seasons of the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). The dynamic and rapid cadences in PTF monitoring of M31, from one day to even ten minutes, provide excellent temporal coverage of nova light curves, enabling us to record the photometric evolution of M31 novae in unprecedented detail. We also detect eight of these novae in the near ultraviolet (UV) band with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. Novae M31N2009-10b and 2010-11a show prominent UV emission peaking a few days prior to their optic…
X-ray grating spectra have opened a new window on the nova physics. High signal-to-noise spectra have been obtained for 12 novae after the outburst in the last 13 years with the Chandra and XMM-Newton gratings. They offer the only way to probe the temperature, effective gravity and chemical composition of the hydrogen burning white dwarf before it turns off. These spectra also allow an analysis of the ejecta, which can be photoionized by the hot white dwarf, but more often seem to undergo collisional ionization. The long observations required for the gratings have revealed semi-regular and irr…
We present light curves of three classical novae (KT Eridani, V598 Puppis, V1280 Scorpii) and one recurrent nova (RS Ophiuchi) derived from data obtained by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) on board the Coriolis satellite. SMEI provides near complete sky-map coverage with precision visible-light photometry at 102-minute cadence. The light curves derived from these sky maps offer unprecedented temporal resolution around, and especially before, maximum light, a phase of the nova eruption normally not covered by ground-based observations. They allow us to explore fundamental parameters of in…
With rapid response capabilities, and a daily planning of its observing schedule, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is ideal for monitoring transient and variable sources. Here we present a sample of the 12 novae with the most detailed ultraviolet (UV) follow-up by Swift -- the first uniform analysis of such UV light-curves. The fading of these specific light-curves can be modelled as power-law decays (plotting magnitude against log time), showing that the same physical processes dominate the UV emission for extended time intervals in individual objects. After the end of the nuclear burning i…
The classical nova V2491 Cyg was once suggested to be a recurrent nova. We have broadly reproduced the light curve of V2491 Cyg by a nova outburst model on a cold $1.36~M_\odot$ white dwarf (WD), which strongly suggests that V2491 Cyg is a classical nova outbursting on a cold very massive WD rather than a recurrent nova outbursting on a warmer WD like the recurrent nova RS Oph. In a long-term evolution of a cataclysmic binary, an accreting WD has been settled down to a thermal equilibrium state with the balance of gravitational energy release and neutrino loss. The central temperature of the W…
Over the last 40 years, multi-frequency observations, coupled with advances in theoretical modelling, have led to a much fuller understanding of the nova phenomenon. Here I give a brief review of the current state of knowledge of Classical and Recurrent Novae including their central systems; the causes and consequences of their outbursts; sub-types, and possible relationships to Type Ia Supernovae. Particular attention is paid to the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi as it shows a wealth of phenomena associated with its 2006 outburst. Finally, some open questions and avenues for future work are summa…
Aims. We present optical spectra of the fast recurrent nova U Sco during its recent outburst, obtained within 24 hr of maximum light. Methods. We use medium resolution (R~4000) spectra taken with the with the MagE spectrograph on the Magellan (Clay) 6.5m telescope of the Las Campanas Observatories. Results. The spectrum is notable for its lack of a low ionization transient heavy element absorption system that is visible in the large majority of novae near maximum light. We suggest that this may be due to the dominance of inner Lagrangian L1 mass transfer and the absence of a circumbinary gas r…
In 1975, E. R. Robinson conducted the hallmark study of the behavior of classical nova light curves before eruption, and this work has now become part of the standard knowledge of novae. He made three points; that 5 out of 11 novae showed pre-eruption rises in the years before eruption, that one nova (V446 Her) showed drastic changes in the variability across eruptions, and that all but one of the novae (excepting BT Mon) have the same quiescent magnitudes before and after the outburst. This work has not been tested since it came out. We have now tested these results by going back to the origi…
We propose a modified color-magnitude diagram for novae in outburst, i.e., $(B-V)_0$ versus $(M_V-2.5 \log f_{\rm s})$, where $f_{\rm s}$ is the timescaling factor of a (target) nova against a comparison (template) nova, $(B-V)_0$ is the intrinsic $B-V$ color, and $M_V$ is the absolute $V$ magnitude. We dub it the time-stretched color-magnitude diagram. We carefully reanalyzed 20 novae based on the time-stretching method and revised their extinctions $E(B-V)$, distance moduli in the $V$ band $(m-M)_V$, distances $d$, and timescaling factors $f_{\rm s}$ against the template nova LV Vul. We have…
We report combined optical and X-ray observations of nova M31N 2007-12b. Optical spectroscopy obtained 5 days after the 2007 December outburst shows evidence of very high ejection velocities (FWHM H$α\simeq 4500$ km s$^{-1}$). In addition, Swift X-ray data show that M31N 2007-12b is associated with a Super-Soft Source (SSS) which appeared between 21 and 35 days post-outburst and turned off between then and day 169. Our analysis implies that $M_{\rm WD} \ga 1.3 $M$_{\odot}$ in this system. The optical light curve, spectrum and X-ray behaviour are consistent with those of a recurrent nova. Hubbl…
The nova T Pyx was observed with high resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 65000) spectroscopy, beginning 1 day after discovery of the outburst and continuing through the last visibility of the star at the end of May 2011. The interstellar absorption lines of Na I, Ca II, CH, CH$^+$, and archival H I 21 cm emission line observations have been used to determine a kinematic distance. Interstellar diffuse absorption features have been used to determine the extinction independent of previous assumptions. Sample Fe-peak line profiles show the optical depth and radial velocity evolution of the discrete comp…
Detection of X-rays from classical novae, both in outburst and post-outburst, provides unique and crucial information about the explosion mechanism. Soft X-rays reveal the hot white dwarf photosphere, whenever hydrogen (H) nuclear burning is still on and expanding envelope is transparent enough, whereas harder X-rays give information about the ejecta and/or the accretion flow in the reborn cataclysmic variable. The duration of the supersoft X-ray emission phase is related to the turn-off of the classical nova, i.e., of the H-burning on top of the white dwarf core. A review of X-ray observation…
Recurrent novae (RNe) are novae with multiple recorded outbursts powered by a thermonuclear runaway. The outburst occurs on the surface of the white dwarf which accompanies with a late type main-sequence or giant secondary star transferring material onto the white dwarf primary star. They resemble classical novae (CNe) outbursts but only RNe has more than one recorded outbursts. RNe play an important role as one of the suspected progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae (SNe) which are used as primary distance indicators in cosmology. Thus, it is important to investigate the outburst type of CN…
