Recurrent novae are binary stars in which a white dwarf accretes matter from a less evolved companion, either a red giant or a main-sequence star. They have dramatic optical brightenings of around 5-6 mag in V in less than a day, several times a century. These occur at variable and unpredictable intervals, and are followed by an optical decline over several weeks, and activity from the X-ray to the radio. The unpredictability of recurrent novae and related stellar types can hamper systematic study of their outbursts. Here we analyse the long-term lightcurve of RS Ophiuchi, a recurrent nova with six confirmed outbursts, most recently in 2006 February. We confirm the previously suspected 1945 outburst, largely obscured in a seasonal gap. We also find a signal via wavelet analysis that can be used to predict an incipient outburst up to a few hundred days before hand. This has never before been possible. In addition this may suggest that the preferred thermonuclear runaway mechanism for the outbursts will have to be modified, as no pre-outburst signal is anticipated in that case. If our result indeed points to gaps in our understanding of how outbursts are driven, we will need to study such objects carefully to determine if the white dwarf is growing in mass, an essential factor if these systems are to become Type Ia Supernovae. Determining the likelihood of recurrent novae being an important source population will have implications for stellar and galaxy evolution.
This review concentrates on the multifrequency behaviour of RS Ophiuchi and in particular during its latest outburst. Confirmation of the 1945 outburst, bipolar outflows and its possible fate as a Type Ia Supernova are discussed.
The very fast, FeII-class Nova Ophiuchi 2010 N.1 rised rapidly to maximum brightness (the last 2.2 mag in V band were covered in 3.4 days), maximum that was reached on Jan. 18.3, 2010 at V=8.5, B-V=+0.95, V-Rc=+0.75, and V-Ic=+1.50. The rapid and smooth decline was charaterized by t2(V)=10.0 and t3(V)=23.5 days. The reddening affecting the nova was E(B-V)=0.7 and its distance d=7.4 kpc, for an height above the galactic plane of z=0.6 kpc.
We report the analysis of time-series of infrared $JHK_s$ photometry of the dwarf nova V2051 Oph in quiescence. We modelled the ellipsoidal variations caused by the distorted mass-donor star to infer its $JHK_s$ fluxes. From its infrared colors we estimate a spectral type of $M(8.0\pm 1.5)$ and an equivalent blackbody temperature of $T_\mathrm{BB}=(2700\pm270)\,K$. We used the Barnes & Evans relation to infer a photometric parallax distance of $d_\mathrm{BE}=(102\pm16)$ pc to the binary. At this short distance, the corresponding accretion disc temperatures in outburst are too low to be explain…
A novel method is presented which can pin down the time the accretion disk re-established itself in the RS Oph system after it experienced a nova disruption. The method is based on the re-ionisation of the ejecta by photoionisation from the radiation released in the boundary layer from accretion.
We present near-infrared (1 - 2.5 micron) spectroscopic and photometric results of Nova V2615 Ophiuchi which was discovered in outburst in 2007 March. Our observations span a period of ~ 80 days starting from 2007 March 28 when the nova was at its maximum light. The evolution of the spectra are shown from the initial P-Cygni phase to an emission-line phase and finally to a dust formation stage. The characteristics of the JHK spectra are very similar to those observed in a nova outburst occurring on a carbon-oxygen white dwarf. We analyse an observed line at 2.088 micron and suggest it could be…
We modelled the late-time {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging of RS Ophiuchi with models from Ribeiro et al. (2009), which at the time due to the unknown availability of simultaneous ground-based spectroscopy left some open questions as to the evolution of the expanding nebular from the early to the late time observations. Initial emission line identifications suggest that no forbidden lines are present in the spectra and that the emission lines arising in the region of the WFPC2 F502N images are due to N{\sc ii} and He{\sc i} + Fe{\sc ii}. The best model fit to the spectrum is one where the …
We report observations of the flickering variability of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS~Oph at quiescence in five bands ($UBVRI$). We find evidence of a correlation between the peak-to-peak flickering amplitude ($ΔF$) and the average flux of the hot component ($F_{\rm av}$). The correlation is highly significant, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85 and a $p$-value of~$\sim 10^{-20}$. Combining the data from all wavebands, we find a dependence of the type $ΔF \propto F^k_{\rm av}$, with power-law index $k = 1.02 \pm 0.04$ for the $UBVRI$ flickering of RS~Oph. Thus, the relationship between t…
Optical spectra of the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi beginning one day after discovery to over a year after the outburst are presented here. The spectral evolution is found to be similar to that in previous outbursts. The early phase spectra are dominated by hydrogen and helium (I & II) lines. Coronal and nebular lines appear in the later phases. Emission line widths are found to narrow with time, which is interpreted as a shock expanding into the red giant wind. Using the photoionisation code CLOUDY, spectra at nine epochs spanning 14 months after the outburst peak, thus covering a broad range…
RS Ophiuchi is a symbiotic variable and a recurrent nova. We have monitored it with the Nordic Optical Telescope and obtained 30 high resolution (R=46 000) optical spectra over one orbital cycle during quiescence. To our knowledge this is the best-sampled high resolution spectroscopic dataset of RS Oph over one orbital period. We do not detect any direct signatures of an accretion disc such as double peaked emission lines, but many line profiles are complex consisting of superimposed emission and absorption components. We measure the spin of the red giant and conclude that it is tidally locked…
We present an analysis of elemental abundances of ejecta of the recurrent nova RS Oph using published optical and near-infrared spectra during the 2006 outburst. We use the CLOUDY photoionization code to generate synthetic spectra by varying several parameters, the model generated spectra are then matched with the observed emission line spectra obtained at two epochs. We obtain the best fit model parameters through the $χ^{2}$ minimization technique. Our model results fit well with observed optical and near-infrared spectra. The best-fit model parameters are compatible with a hot white dwarf s…
A directed search for previously-undiscovered nova eruptions was conducted in the astronomical plate archives at Harvard College Observatory and Sonneberg Observatory. We found that an eruption of V2487 Oph (Nova Oph 1998) occurred on 1900 June 20. V2487 Oph was previously classified as a classical nova, which we identified as a probable recurrent nova based on its large expansion velocities and the presence of high excitation lines in the outburst spectrum. The event was recorded on Harvard plate AM 505, at a B magnitude of 10.27 +/- 0.11, which is near peak. The outburst can only be seen on …
We present near-IR photo-spectroscopy in the H and K bands of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph). The observations cover the period between 1 to 94 days after the eruption. The near IR light curve and an extensive set of spectra are presented, lines identified and the general characteristics of the spectra discussed. Analysis of the HI line profiles show the presence of broad wings on both flanks of a strong central component indicating the presence of a bipolar velocity flow in the ejecta. Such a flow is kinematically consistent with the bipolar structure that the ob…

RS Oph is a recurrent symbiotic nova that undergoes nova-like outbursts on a time scale of 20 years. Its two last eruptions (1985 and 2006) were subject of intensive multiwavelengths observational campaign from the X-rays to the radio. This contribution aims to determine physical parameters and the ionization structure of the nova from its explosion to the first emergence of the supersoft X-rays (day 26) by using the method of multiwavelength modelling the SED. From the very beginning of the eruption, the model SED revealed the presence of both a strong stellar and nebular component of radiati…
If accreting white dwarfs (WD) in binary systems are to produce type Ia supernovae (SNIa), they must grow to nearly the Chandrasekhar mass and ignite carbon burning. Proving conclusively that a WD has grown substantially since its birth is a challenging task. Slow accretion of hydrogen inevitably leads to the erosion, rather than the growth of WDs. Rapid hydrogen accretion does lead to growth of a helium layer, due to both decreased degeneracy and the inhibition of mixing of the accreted hydrogen with the underlying WD. However, until recently, simulations of helium-accreting WDs all claimed t…
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging, obtained 155 and 449 days after the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, together with ground-based spectroscopic observations, obtained from the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional en San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, México and at the Observatorio Astrofísico Guillermo Haro, at Cananea, Sonora, México. The observations at the first epoch were used as inputs to model the geometry and kinematic structure of the evolving RS Oph nebular remnant. We find that the modeled remnant comprises two distinct co-aligned bipolar components; a low-veloci…
We present near infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Oph obtained on several occasions after its latest outburst in 2006 February. The 1-5 mircon spectra are dominated by the red giant, but the H I, He I, and coronal lines present during the eruption are present in all our observations. From the fits of the computed infrared spectral energy distributions to the observed fluxes we find T_eff=4200+/-200,K for the red giant. The first overtone CO bands at 2.3 micron, formed in the atmosphere of the red giant, are variable. The spectra clearly exhibit an infrared excess due to dust emiss…
The BVI lightcurves of seven recent novae have been extensively mapped with daily robotic observations from Atacama (Chile). They are V1534 Sco, V1535 Sco, V2949 Oph, V3661 Oph, MASTER OT J010603.18-744715.8, TCP J1734475-240942 and ASASSN-16ma. Five belong to the Bulge, one to SMC and another is a Galactic disk object. The two program novae detected in gamma-rays by Fermi-LAT (TCP J1734475-240942 and ASASSN-16ma) are Bulge objects with unevolved companions. They distinguish themselves in showing a double-component optical lightcurve. The first component to develop is the fireball from freely-…
We report the analysis of time-series of infrared $JHK_s$ photometry of the dwarf nova V2051 Oph in quiescence with eclipse mapping techniques to investigate structures and the spectrum of its accretion disc. The light curves after removal of the ellipsoidal variations caused by the mass-donor star show a double-wave modulation signalling the presence of two asymmetric light sources in the accretion disc. Eclipse maps reveal two spiral arms on top of the disc emission, one at $R_1= 0.28\pm 0.02 \,R_\mathrm{L1}$ and the other at $R_2= 0.42\pm 0.02 \,R_\mathrm{L1}$ (where $R_\mathrm{L1}$ is the …
We present the evolution of the optical spectra of the 2021 outburst of RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) over about a month after the outburst. The spectral evolution is similar to the previous outbursts. Early spectra show prominent P Cygni profiles of hydrogen Balmer, \ion{Fe}{ii}, and \ion{He}{i} lines. The emission lines were very broad during the initial days, which later became narrower and sharper as the nova evolved. This is interpreted as the expanding shocked material into the winds of the red giant companion. We find that the nova ejecta expanded freely for $\sim 4$ days, and afterward, the sho…
Radio, infrared, and optical observations of the 2006 eruption of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) showed that the explosion produced non-spherical ejecta. Some of this ejected material was in the form of bipolar jets to the east and west of the central source. Here we describe Xray observations taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory one and a half years after the beginning of the outburst that reveal narrow, extended structure with a position angle of approximately 300 degrees (east of north). Although the orientation of the extended feature in the X-ray image is consistent…
Over the last 40 years, multi-frequency observations, coupled with advances in theoretical modelling, have led to a much fuller understanding of the nova phenomenon. Here I give a brief review of the current state of knowledge of Classical and Recurrent Novae including their central systems; the causes and consequences of their outbursts; sub-types, and possible relationships to Type Ia Supernovae. Particular attention is paid to the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi as it shows a wealth of phenomena associated with its 2006 outburst. Finally, some open questions and avenues for future work are summa…

Recent interpretations of narrow, variable absorption lines detected in some Type Ia supernovae suggest that their progenitors are surrounded by dense, circumstellar material. Similar variations detected in the symbiotic recurrent nova system RS Oph, which undergoes thermonuclear outbursts every ~20 years, making it an ideal candidate to investigate the origin of these lines. To this end, we present simulations of multiple mass transfer-nova cycles in RS Oph. We find that the quiescent mass transfer produces a dense, equatorial outflow, i.e., concentrated towards the binary orbital plane, and …
We investigated the optical lightcurve of T Pyx during its 2011 outburst by compiling a database of SMEI and AAVSO observations. The SMEI lightcurve, providing unprecedented detail covering 1.5-49d post-discovery, was divided into four phases based on the idealised CN optical lightcurve; the initial rise (1.5-3.3d), the pre-maximum halt (3.3-13.3d), the final rise (14.7-27.9d), and the early decline (27.9d-). The SMEI lightcurve contains a strongly detected period of 1.44+/-0.05d during the pre-maximum phase. These oscillations resemble those found in TNR models arising from instabilities in t…
We present and discuss accurate and densely mapped BVRI lightcurves of the neon Nova Mon 2012, supplemented by the evolution in Stromgren b and y bands and in the integrated flux of relevant emission lines. Our monitoring started with the optical discovery of the nova and extend to day +270, well past the end of the super-soft phase in X-rays. The nova displayed very smoothly evolving lightcurves. A bifurcation between y and V light-curves took place at the start of the SSS phase, and a knee developed toward the end of the SSS phase. The apparent magnitude of the nova at the unobserved optical…
We present an analysis of archival Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) observations of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi obtained on several occasions, beginning about 7 months after the outburst in 2006. These data show atomic emission lines, absorption bands due to photospheric SiO, and the well known silicate dust features at $9.7\,μ$m and $18\,μ$m. The dust emission, arising in the wind of the secondary star, is fitted by Dusty models for mass-loss rates in the range $1.0-1.7\times10^{-7}$M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. The silicate features are similar in profile to those seen in circumstellar environ…
We report spectroscopic observations of the resonance lines of singly ionized $^{7}$Be in the blue-shifted absorption line systems found in the post-outburst spectra of two classical novae -- V5668 Sgr (Nova Sagittarii 2015 No.2) and V2944 Oph (Nova Ophiuchi 2015). The unstable isotope, $^{7}$Be, should has been created during the thermonuclear runaway (TNR) of these novae and decays to form $^{7}$Li within a short period (a half-life of 53.22 days). Confirmations of $^{7}$Be are the second and the third ones following the first case found in V339 Del by Tajitsu et al. (2015). The blue-shifted…
Optical (BVRI) and infrared (JHK) photometry of the gamma-ray nova Nova Sco 2012 (V1324 Sco) is presented and the lightcurve reconstructed and discussed. An interstellar reddening E(B-V)=1.23 is derived. Dust begun to form at an early date in the nova, only one magnitude down and 20 days past maximum optical brightness and caused an extinction of at least 6 magnitudes in V band, that cleared some months later. This unusual early dust formation compromises the application of the magnitude at maximum versus rate of decline (MMRD) relations in estimating the distance to the nova.
The disk instability model attributes the outbursts of dwarf novae to a thermal-viscous instability of their accretion disk, an instability to which nova-like stars are not subject. We aim to test the fundamental prediction of the disk instability model: the separation of cataclysmic variables (CVs) into nova-likes and dwarf novae depending on orbital period and mass transfer rate from the companion. We analyse the lightcurves from a sample of ~130 CVs with a parallax distance in the Gaia DR2 catalogue to derive their average mass transfer rate. The method for converting optical magnitude to m…
We present an analysis of optical and infrared spectra of the recurrent nova RS Oph obtained during between 2006 and 2009. The best fit to the optical spectrum for 2006 September 28 gives effective temperature Tef = 3900~K for log g = 2.0, while for log g = 0.0 we find Tef = 4700~K, and a comparison with template stellar spectra provides Tef $\sim$ 4500 K. The observed spectral energy distribution (SED), and the intensities of the emission lines, vary on short ($\sim 1$~day) time-scales, due to disc variability. We invoke a simple one-component model for the accretion disc, and a model with a …
We present light curves of three classical novae (KT Eridani, V598 Puppis, V1280 Scorpii) and one recurrent nova (RS Ophiuchi) derived from data obtained by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) on board the Coriolis satellite. SMEI provides near complete sky-map coverage with precision visible-light photometry at 102-minute cadence. The light curves derived from these sky maps offer unprecedented temporal resolution around, and especially before, maximum light, a phase of the nova eruption normally not covered by ground-based observations. They allow us to explore fundamental parameters of in…
We report combined optical and X-ray observations of nova M31N 2007-12b. Optical spectroscopy obtained 5 days after the 2007 December outburst shows evidence of very high ejection velocities (FWHM H$α\simeq 4500$ km s$^{-1}$). In addition, Swift X-ray data show that M31N 2007-12b is associated with a Super-Soft Source (SSS) which appeared between 21 and 35 days post-outburst and turned off between then and day 169. Our analysis implies that $M_{\rm WD} \ga 1.3 $M$_{\odot}$ in this system. The optical light curve, spectrum and X-ray behaviour are consistent with those of a recurrent nova. Hubbl…
The shock interaction and evolution of nova ejecta with a wind from a red giant star in a symbiotic binary system are investigated via three-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations. We specifically model the March 2010 outburst of the symbiotic recurrent nova V407~Cygni from the quiescent phase to its eruption phase. The circumstellar density enhancement due to wind-white dwarf interaction is studied in detail. It is found that the density-enhancement efficiency depends on the ratio of the orbital speed to the red giant wind speed. Unlike another recurrent nova, RS~Ophiuchi, we do not observe a …
Context: In late November 2013 a fifth eruption in five years of the M31 recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a was announced. Aims: In this Letter we address the optical lightcurve and progenitor system of M31N 2008-12a. Methods: Optical imaging data of the 2013 eruption from the Liverpool Telescope, La Palma, and Danish 1.54m Telescope, La Silla, and archival Hubble Space Telescope near-IR, optical and near-UV data are astrometrically and photometrically analysed. Results: Photometry of the 2013 eruption, combined with three previous eruptions, enabled construction of a template light curve of a very …
We present ground-based optical and near infrared photometric observations and Hubble Space Telescope COS spectroscopic observations of the old nova V842 Cen (Nova Cen 1986). Analysis of the optical light curves reveals a peak at 56.5 +/- 0.3s with an amplitude of 8.9 +/- 4.2 mma, which is consistent with the rotation of a magnetic white dwarf primary in V842 Cen that was detected earlier by Woudt et al., and led to its classification as an intermediate polar. However, our UV lightcurve created from the COS time-tag spectra does not show this periodicity. Our synthetic spectral analysis of an H…
M31N 2015-01a (or M31LRN 2015) is a red nova that erupted in January 2015 -- the first event of this kind observed in M31 since 1988. Very few similar events have been confirmed as of 2015. Most of them are considered to be products of stellar mergers. Results of an extensive optical monitoring of the transient in the period January-March 2015 are presented. Eight optical telescopes were used for imaging. Spectra were obtained on BTA, GTC and the Rozhen 2m telescope. We present a highly accurate 70 d lightcurve and astrometry with a 0.05" uncertainty. The color indices reached a minimum 2-3 d …
The enigmatic near-infrared transient VVV-WIT-06 underwent a large amplitude eruption of unclear origin in July 2013. Based on its lightcurve properties and late-time post-outburst spectra various possibilities have been proposed in the literature for the origin of the object viz. a Type I supernova, a classical nova (CN) and a violent stellar merger event. We show that out of these possibilities, an origin in a CN outburst convincingly explains the observed properties of VVV-WIT-06. We estimate that the absolute K band magnitude of the nova at maximum was M$_K$ = -8.2 $\pm$ 0.5, its distance …
We report MERLIN, VLA, OCRA-p, VLBA, Effelsberg and GMRT observations beginning 4.5 days after the discovery of RS Ophiuchi undergoing its 2006 recurrent nova outburst. Observations over the first 9 weeks are included, enabling us to follow spectral development throughout the three phases of the remnant development. We see dramatic brightening on days 4 to 7 at 6 GHz and an accompanying increase in other bands, particularly 1.46 GHz, consistent with transition from the initial "free expansion" phase to the adiabatic expansion phase. This is complete by day 13 when the flux density at 5 GHz is …
The recurrent nova T CrB has entered in 2015 a phase of unprecedented high activity. To trace something equivalent, it is necessary to go back to 1938, before the last nova eruption in 1946. The 2015 super-active state is characterized by: a large increase in the mean brightness (Delta B =0.72 mag over the uderlying secular trend), vanishing of the orbital modulation from the B-band lightcurve, and appearance of strong and high ionization emission lines, on top of a nebular continuum that overwhelms at optical wavelengths the absoption spectrum of the M giant. Among the emission lines, HeII 46…
We briefly summarize the observational properties of ultra-compact binaries called AM CVn stars. We analize their outbursts originating from the thermal-viscous instability in helium accretion disc. We present our preliminary results in applying the model of Dwarf Novae outbursts to helium discs. We can calculate models of outbursts of reasonable amplitude of 2 mag with a constant alfa parameter throughout the calculation. Setting the mass transfer rate close to its upper critical value produces model lightcurves that resemble short superoutbursts.
Symbiotic stars are the longest orbital period interacting binaries, where nova-like outbursts are generated by the accretion of a high mass loss rate red giant wind onto a white dwarf companion. Long-term photometric monitoring surveys such as OGLE and MACHO are ideal platforms to identify nova-like events in symbiotic stars, however there are only a handful of known systems within the small footprint of these surveys. We introduce a systematic Halpha emission line object survey for new symbiotic stars covering 35 deg^2 towards the Galactic Bulge that combines deep 2dF/AAOmega spectroscopy wi…
We propose a scenario for the formation of DA white dwarfs with very thin helium buffers. For these stars we explore the possible occurrence of diffusion-induced CNO- flashes, during their early cooling stage. In order to obtain very thin helium buffers, we simulate the formation of low mass remnants through an AGB final/late thermal pulse (AFTP/LTP scenario). Then we calculate the consequent white dwarf cooling evolution by means of a consistent treatment of element diffusion and nuclear burning. Based on physically sounding white dwarf models, we find that the range of helium buffer masses f…
A massive millisecond magnetar may survive a merger of a neutron star (NS) binary, which would continuously power the merger ejecta. We develop a generic dynamic model for the merger ejecta with energy injection from the central magnetar. The ejecta emission (the "merger-nova") powered by the magnetar peaks in the UV band and the peak of lightcurve progressively shifts to an earlier epoch with increasing frequency. A magnetar-powered mergernova could have an optical peak brightness comparable to a supernova, which is a few tens or hundreds times brighter than the radioactive-powered merger-nov…

Classical nova events in symbiotic stars, although rare, offer a unique opportunity to probe the interaction between ejecta and a dense environment in stellar explosions. In this work, we use X-ray data obtained with Swift and Suzaku during the recent classical nova outburst in V407 Cyg to explore such an interaction. We find evidence of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium ionization plasmas at the time of peak X-ray brightness, indicating a strong asymmetry in the density of the emitting region. Comparing a simple model to the data, we find that the X-ray evolution is broadly consistent with…

We present the results of optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared observations of M101 OT2015-1 (PSN J14021678+5426205), a luminous red transient in the Pinwheel galaxy (M101), spanning a total of 16 years. The lightcurve showed two distinct peaks with absolute magnitudes $M_r\leq-12.4$ and $M_r \simeq-12$, on 2014 November 11 and 2015 February 17, respectively. The spectral energy distributions during the second maximum show a cool outburst temperature of $\approx$3700 K and low expansion velocities ($\approx-$300 \kms) for the H I, Ca II, Ba II and K I lines. From archival data spanning 15 …
We report the outbursting source PTF 14jg, which prior to the onset of its late 2013 eruption, was a faint, unstudied, and virtually uncatalogued star. The salient features of the PTF 14jg outburst are: (i) projected location near the W4 HII region and radial velocity consistent with physical association; (ii) a lightcurve that underwent a $\sim$6-7 mag optical (R-band) through mid-infrared (L-band) brightening on a few month time scale, that peaked and then faded by $\sim$3 mag, but plateaued still $>$3.5 mag above quiescence by $\sim$8 months post-peak, lasting to at least five years after e…
We present optical lightcurves of variable stars consistent with the positions of X-ray sources identified with the Chandra X-ray Observatory for the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey. Using data from the Mosaic-II instrument on the Blanco 4m Telescope at CTIO, we gathered time-resolved photometric data on timescales from $\sim2$ hr to 8 days over the $\frac{3}{4}$ of the X-ray survey containing sources from the initial GBS catalog. Among the lightcurve morphologies we identify are flickering in interacting binaries, eclipsing sources, dwarf nova outbursts, ellipsoidal variations, long period vari…
