Classical nova events in symbiotic stars, although rare, offer a unique opportunity to probe the interaction between ejecta and a dense environment in stellar explosions. In this work, we use X-ray data obtained with Swift and Suzaku during the recent classical nova outburst in V407 Cyg to explore such an interaction. We find evidence of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium ionization plasmas at the time of peak X-ray brightness, indicating a strong asymmetry in the density of the emitting region. Comparing a simple model to the data, we find that the X-ray evolution is broadly consistent with nova ejecta driving a forward shock into the dense wind of the Mira companion. We detect a highly absorbed soft X-ray component in the spectrum during the first 50 days of the outburst that is consistent with supersoft emission from the nuclear burning white dwarf. The high temperature and short turn off time of this emission component, in addition to the observed breaks in the optical and UV lightcurves, indicate that the white dwarf in the binary is extremely massive. Finally, we explore the connections between the X-ray and GeV gamma-ray evolution, and propose that the gamma ray turn-off is due to the stalling of the forward shock as the ejecta reach the red giant surface.
We present multi-frequency radio observations of the 2010 nova event in the symbiotic binary V407 Cygni, obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and spanning 1-45 GHz and 17-770 days following discovery. This nova---the first ever detected in gamma rays---shows a radio light curve dominated by the wind of the Mira giant companion, rather than the nova ejecta themselves. The radio luminosity grew as the wind became increasingly ionized by the nova outburst, and faded as the wind was violently heated from within by the nova shock. This study marks the first time that this physical mech…
V476 Cyg (Nova Cyg 1920) is a bright, fast nova reaching a photographic magnitude of 2.0. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public database, I found that this nova is currently a dwarf nova with a cycle length of ~24 d. Compared to other classical novae currently in dwarf nova-type states, outbursts of V476 Cyg are rapidly rising and short with durations of a few days. Based on the AAVSO observations, this nova was probably already in the dwarf nova-type phase in 2016, 96 years after the nova eruption. I found a possible orbital period of 0.1018002(6) d using the ZTF data, which would …
We present Suzaku XIS observation of V2491 Cyg (Nova Cyg 2008 No. 2) obtained in quiescence, more than two years after the outburst. The nova was detected as a very luminous source in a wide spectral range from soft to hard X-rays. A very soft blackbody-like component peaking at 0.5 keV indicates that either we observe remaining, localized hydrogen burning on the surface of the white dwarf, or accretion onto a magnetized polar cap. In the second case, V2491 Cyg is a candidate "soft intermediate polar". We obtained the best fit for the X-ray spectra with several components: two of thermal plasm…
Near-IR spectroscopy is presented for Nova Scorpii 2014. It is shown that the outburst occurred in a symbiotic binary system - an extremely rare configuration for a classical nova outburst to occur in but appropriate for the eruption of a recurrent nova of the T CrB class. We estimate the spectral class of secondary as M5III $\pm$ (two sub-classes). The maximum magnitude versus rate of decline (MMRD) relations give an unacceptably large value of 37.5 kpc for the distance. The spectra are typical of the He/N class of novae with strong HeI and H lines. The profiles are broad and flat topped with…
The recurrent symbiotic nova V745 Sco exploded on 2014 February 6 and was observed on February 22 and 23 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory Transmission Grating Spectrometers. By that time the supersoft source phase had already ended and Chandra spectra are consistent with emission from a hot, shock-heated circumstellar medium with temperatures exceeding 10^7K. X-ray line profiles are more sharply peaked than expected for a spherically-symmetric blast wave, with a full width at zero intensity of approximately 2400 km/s, a full width at half maximum of 1200 +/- 30 km/s and an average net blueshif…
Nova V2491 Cyg was discovered on April 10.72 UT 2008 (Nakano, 2008). Here we present spectrophotometric premises that V2491 Cyg can be a good candidate for recurrent nova (RNe). Its properties are compared to five well known RNe with red dwarf secondaries (U Sco, V394 Cra, T Pyx, CI Aql, IM Nor) and recently confirmed as recurrent nova V2487 Oph (Pagnotta et al.,2008). Photometric $U, B, V, R_C, I_C$ and moderate resolution (R$\sim 1500$) spectral observations of V2491 Cyg were carried out in the Torun Observatory (Poland) between April 14 and May 20 2008.
The shock interaction and evolution of nova ejecta with a wind from a red giant star in a symbiotic binary system are investigated via three-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations. We specifically model the March 2010 outburst of the symbiotic recurrent nova V407~Cygni from the quiescent phase to its eruption phase. The circumstellar density enhancement due to wind-white dwarf interaction is studied in detail. It is found that the density-enhancement efficiency depends on the ratio of the orbital speed to the red giant wind speed. Unlike another recurrent nova, RS~Ophiuchi, we do not observe a …
We present X-ray observations of novae V2491 Cyg and KT Eri about 9 years post-outburst, of the dwarf nova and post-nova candidate EY Cyg, and of a VY Scl variable. The first three objects were observed with XMM-Newton, KT Eri also with the Chandra ACIS-S camera, V794 Aql with the Chandra ACIS-S camera and High Energy Transmission Gratings. The two recent novae, similar in outburst amplitude and light curve, appear very different at quiescence. Assuming half of the gravitational energy is irradiated in X-rays, V2491 Cyg is accreting at $\dot{m}=1.4\times10^{-9}-10^{-8}M_\odot/yr$, while for KT…
The classical nova V2491 Cyg was once suggested to be a recurrent nova. We have broadly reproduced the light curve of V2491 Cyg by a nova outburst model on a cold $1.36~M_\odot$ white dwarf (WD), which strongly suggests that V2491 Cyg is a classical nova outbursting on a cold very massive WD rather than a recurrent nova outbursting on a warmer WD like the recurrent nova RS Oph. In a long-term evolution of a cataclysmic binary, an accreting WD has been settled down to a thermal equilibrium state with the balance of gravitational energy release and neutrino loss. The central temperature of the W…
We conducted an X-ray spectroscopic study of the classical nova V2491 Cygni using our target-of-opportunity observation data with the Suzaku and XMM-Newton satellites as well as archived data with the Swift satellite. Medium-resolution (R~10-50) spectra were obtained using the X-ray CCD spectrometers at several post-nova epochs on days 9, 29, 40, 50, and 60-150 in addition to a pre-nova interval between days -322 and -100 all relative to the time when the classical nova was spotted. We found remarkable changes in the time series of the spectra: (a) In the pre-nova phase and on day 9, the 6.7 k…
The photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the He/N and very fast Nova Cyg 2008 N2 (V2491 Cyg) is studied in detail. A primary maximum was reached at V=7.45 +/-0.05 on April 11.37 (+/-0.1) 2008 UT, followed by a smooth decline characterized by t2(V)=4.8 days, and then a second maximum was attained at V=9.49 +/-0.03, 14.5 days after the primary one. This is the only third nova to have displayed a secondary maximum, after V2362 Cyg and V1493 Aql. The development and energetics of the secondary maximum is studied in detail. The smooth decline that followed was accurately monitored until day +…
In this paper we analyzed the behavior of the unusual dwarf nova EM Cyg using the data obtained in April-October, 2007 in Vyhorlat observatory (Slovak Republic) and in September, 2006 in Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (Ukraine). During our observations EM Cyg has shown outbursts in every 15-40 days. Because on the light curves of EM Cyg the partial eclipse of an accretion disc is observed we applied the eclipse mapping technique to reconstruct the temperature distribution in eclipsed parts of the disc. Calculations of the accretion rate in the system were made for the quiescent and the outb…
The X-ray flux of Nova V2491 Cyg reached a maximum some forty days after optical maximum. The X-ray spectrum at that time, obtained with the RGS of XMM-Newton, shows deep, blue-shifted absorption by ions of a wide range of ionization. We show that the deep absorption lines of the X-ray spectrum at maximum, and nine days later, are well described by the following phenomenological model with emission from a central blackbody and from a collisionally ionized plasma (CIE). The blackbody spectrum (BB) is absorbed by three main highly-ionized expanding shells; the CIE and BB are absorbed by cold cir…
We present phase-resolved near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the classical nova V1500 Cyg to explore whether cyclotron emission is present in this system. While the spectroscopy do not indicate the presence of discrete cyclotron harmonic emission, the light curves suggest that a sizable fraction of its near-infrared fluxes are due to this component. The light curves of V1500 Cyg appear to remain dominated by emission from the heated face of the secondary star in this system. We have used infrared spectroscopy and photometry to search for other potential magnetic systems amongst old c…
We present some results of an ongoing study of the long-term spectroscopic variations of AG Dra, a prototypical eruptive symbiotic system. We discuss the effects of the environment and orbital modulation in this system and some of the physical processes revealed by a comparison with the nova outburst of the symbiotic-like recurrent nova V407 Cyg 2010.
We present the results of our spectroscopic study of the dwarf nova SS Cygni, using Roche tomography to map the stellar surface and derive the system parameters. Given that this technique takes into account the inhomogeneous brightness distribution on the surface of the secondary star, our derived parameters are (in principle) the most robust yet found for this system. Furthermore, our surface maps reveal that the secondary star is highly spotted, with strongly asymmetric irradiation on the inner hemisphere. Moreover, by constructing Doppler tomograms of several Balmer emission lines, we find …
We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of a classical nova, V2362 Cyg (= Nova Cygni 2006). V2362 Cyg experienced a peculiar rebrightening with a long duration from 100 to 240 d after the maximum of the nova. Our multicolor observation indicates an emergence of a pseudophotosphere with an effective temperature of 9000 K at the rebrightening maximum. After the rebrightening maximum, the object showed a slow fading homogeneously in all of the used bands for one week. This implies that the fading just after the rebrightening maximum ( less or equal 1 week ) was caused by a slowly sh…
The nova outburst experienced in 2010 by the symbiotic binary Mira V407 Cyg has been extensively studied at optical and infrared wavelengths with both photometric and spectroscopic observations. This outburst, reminiscent of similar events displayed by RS Oph, can be described as a very fast He/N nova erupting while being deeply embedded in the dense wind of its cool giant companion. The hard radiation from the initial thermonuclear flash ionizes and excites the wind of the Mira over great distances (recombination is observed on a time scale of 4 days). The nova ejecta is found to progressivel…
The nova outburst of V407 Cyg in 2010 Mar. 10 was the first observed for this star but its close resemblance to the well known symbiotic-like recurrent nova RS Oph suggests that it is also a member of this rare type of Galactic novae. The nova was the first detected at $γ$-ray energies and is the first known nova explosion for this system. The extensive multiwavelength coverage of this outburst makes it an ideal comparison with the few other outbursts known for similar systems. We extend our previous analysis of the Mira and the expanding shock from the explosion to detail the time development…
We report on the time variation of SiO maser emission from the symbiotic stellar system V407 Cyg after the classical nova outburst on 2010 March 10. Although both the SiO $J=1$--0 $v=1$ and 2 lines at 43.122 and 42.821 GHz were found previously in the envelope of a mira in the binary system, only weak emission of the $J=1$--0 $v=2$ line has continuously been detectable after the nova outburst. The line profile exhibited a dramatic change several weeks after the burst; the component on the higher-velocity side of the systemic velocity disappeared two weeks after the burst, and a new persistent …
We present a summary of Swift and Suzaku X-ray observations of the 2010 nova outburst of the symbiotic star, V407 Cyg. The Suzaku spectrum obtained on day 30 indicates the presence of the supersoft component from the white dwarf surface, as well as optically thin component from the shock between the nova ejecta and the Mira wind. The Swift observations then allow us to track the evolution of both components from day 4 to day 150. Most notable is the sudden brightening of the optically thin component around day 20. We identify this as the time when the blast wave reached the immediate vicinity …
SS Cyg has long been recognized as the prototype of a group of dwarf novae that show only outbursts. However, this object has entered a quite anomalous event in 2021, which at first appeared to be standstill, i.e., an almost constant luminosity state, observed in Z Cam-type dwarf novae. This unexpected event gives us a great opportunity to reconsider the nature of standstill in cataclysmic variables. We have observed this anomalous event and its forerunner, a gradual and simultaneous increase in the optical and X-ray flux during quiescence, through many optical telescopes and the X-ray telesco…
We identify a new class of novae characterized by the post-eruption quiescent light curve being more than roughly a factor of ten brighter than the pre-eruption light curve. Eight novae (V723 Cas, V1500 Cyg, V1974 Cyg, GQ Mus, CP Pup, T Pyx, V4633 Sgr, and RW UMi) are separated out as being significantly distinct from other novae. This group shares a suite of uncommon properties, characterized by the post-eruption magnitude being much brighter than before eruption, short orbital periods, long-lasting supersoft emission following the eruption, a highly magnetized white dwarf, and secular declin…
We present infrared spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nova V2468 Cyg covering the period from 2008 March 13 till 2008 November 11. The JHK spectra of the object have been taken from the Mount Abu Infrared Observatory using the Near-Infrared Imager/Spectrometer. Spectra from 0.8-5.2 micron are also presented that were obtained using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the SPEX instrument. The spectra are dominated by strong H I lines from the Brackett and Paschen series, Fe II, OI and CI lines in the initial days, typical of an Fe II type nova. The lines were broader in the…
SS Cygni is one of the brightest dwarf novae (DNe), and one of the best-studied prototypes of the cataclysmic variables. Astrometric observations with the Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), published in 2004, gave an absolute trigonometric parallax of 6.06+/-0.44 mas. However, recent very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), obtained during radio outbursts of SS Cyg, has yielded a significantly larger absolute parallax of 8.80+/-0.12 mas, as well as a large difference in the direction of the proper motion compared to the HST result. The VLBI distance reduces the i…
We propose a modified color-magnitude diagram for novae in outburst, i.e., $(B-V)_0$ versus $(M_V-2.5 \log f_{\rm s})$, where $f_{\rm s}$ is the timescaling factor of a (target) nova against a comparison (template) nova, $(B-V)_0$ is the intrinsic $B-V$ color, and $M_V$ is the absolute $V$ magnitude. We dub it the time-stretched color-magnitude diagram. We carefully reanalyzed 20 novae based on the time-stretching method and revised their extinctions $E(B-V)$, distance moduli in the $V$ band $(m-M)_V$, distances $d$, and timescaling factors $f_{\rm s}$ against the template nova LV Vul. We have…
We suggest that the radio emission from the dwarf nova SS Cyg during outburst comes from magnetic activity that formed a corona (similar to coronae found in magnetically active stars), rather than from jets. We base our claim on the recent results of Laor & Behar, who found that when the ratio between radio and X-ray flux of accretion disks in radio-quiet quasars is as in active stars, Lr/Lx=10^{-5}, then most of the radio emission comes from coronae. Using observations from the literature we find that for SS Cyg during outburst Lr/Lx<10^{-5}. This does not mean jets are not launched during ou…
We have examined the outburst tracks of 40 novae in the color-magnitude diagram (intrinsic B-V color versus absolute V magnitude). After reaching the optical maximum, each nova generally evolves toward blue from the upper-right to the lower-left and then turns back toward the right. The 40 tracks are categorized into one of six templates: very fast nova V1500 Cyg; fast novae V1668 Cyg, V1974 Cyg, and LV Vul; moderately fast nova FH Ser; and very slow nova PU Vul. These templates are located from the left (blue) to the right (red) in this order, depending on the envelope mass and nova speed cla…
Kepler high cadence data are used to measure the orbital periods and to determine the orbital waveforms of five dwarf novae. A significant improvement of the period of V1504 Cyg is achieved, while for the other systems periods are derived which are compatible with previous determinations. The orbital waveforms of the short period systems V1504 Cyg, V344 Lyr and V516 Lyr are very nearly sinusoidal, while the longer period dwarf nova V447 Lyr appears almost to be a twin of U Gem. The unusual system KIC 9202990 exhibits distinct variations of its waveform as a function of brightness during its ou…
On 2010 Mar 10, V407 Cyg was discovered in outburst, eventually reaching V< 8 and detected by Fermi. Using medium and high resolution ground-based optical spectra, visual and Swift UV photometry, and Swift X-ray spectrophotometry, we describe the behavior of the high-velocity profile evolution for this nova during its first three months. The peak of the X-ray emission occurred at about day 40 with a broad maximum and decline after day 50. The main changes in the optical spectrum began at around that time. The He II 4686A line first appeared between days 7 and 14 and initially displayed a broad…
Combining with our newest CCD times of light minimum of EM Cygni, all 45 available times of light minimum including 7 data with large scatters are compiled and the updated O-C analysis is made. The bestfit for the O-C diagram of EM Cygni is a quadratic-plus-sinusoidal fit. The secular orbital period decrease rate -2.5(\pm 0.3)x10^{-11} s s^{-1} means that magnetic braking effect with a rate of mass loss via stellar wind, 2.3x10^{-10}Msunyr^{-1}, is needed for explaining the observed orbital period decrease. Moreover, for explaining the significant cyclical period change with a period of \sim 1…
Nova Mon 2012 was the first classical nova to be detected as a high energy $γ$-ray transient, by Fermi-LAT, before its optical discovery. We study a time sequence of high resolution optical echelle spectra (Nordic Optical Telescope) and contemporaneous NOT, STIS UV, and CHIRON echelle spectra (Nov 20/21/22). We use [O III] and H$β$ line fluxs to constrain the properties of the ejecta. We derive the structure from the optical and UV line profiles and compare our measured line fluxes for with predictions using Cloudy with abundances from other ONe novae. Mon 2012 is confirmed as an ONe nova. We …
An optical light curve of SU UMa type dwarf nova V1504 Cyg taken by Kepler was analysed in order to study fast optical variability (flickering). We calculated power density spectra and rms-flux relations for two different stages of activity, i.e. quiescence and regular outbursts. A multicomponent power density spectrum with two break frequencies was found during both activity stages. The rms-flux relation is obvious only in the quiescent data. However, while the collection of all outburst data do not show this variability, every individual outburst does show it in the majority of cases keeping…
We observed the 2015 July-August long outburst of V1006 Cyg and established this object to be an SU UMa-type dwarf nova in the period gap. Our observations have confirmed that V1006 Cyg is the second established object showing three types of outbursts (normal, long normal and superoutbursts) after TU Men. We have succeeded in recording the growing stage of superhumps (stage A superhumps) and obtained a mass ratio of 0.26-0.33, which is close to the stability limit of tidal instability. This identification of stage A superhumps demonstrated that superhumps indeed slowly grow in systems near the…
CCD photometric observations of the dwarf nova V1006 Cyg were carried out in 2015-2017 with 11 telescopes located at 7 observatories. They covered the 2015 superoutburst with rebrightening, five normal outbursts of ~4-day duration and one wide outburst that lasted at least seven days. The interval between normal outbursts was 16 and 22 days, and between superoutbursts is expected to be longer than 124 days. The positive superhumps with the mean period of 0^d.10544(10) and 0^d.10406(17) were detected during the 2015 superoutburst and during the short-term quiescence between rebrightening and th…
Determining the evolution of the ejecta morphology of novae provides valuable information on the shaping mechanisms in operation at early stages of the nova outburst. Understanding such mechanisms has implications for studies of shaping for example in proto-Planetary Nebulae. Here we perform morpho-kinematical studies of V2491 Cyg using spectral data to determine the likely structure of the ejecta and its relationship to the central system and shaping mechanisms. We use Shape to model different morphologies and retrieve their spectra. These synthetic spectra are compared with observed spectra …
Using a simple accelerating model and an assumption that $γ$-rays originate from $p-p$ collisions for a $π^0$ model, we investigate $γ$-ray sources like V407 Cygni in symbiotic stars. The upper limit of their occurrence rate in the Galaxy is between 0.5 and 5 yr$^{-1}$, indicating that they may be an important source of the high-energy $γ$-rays. The maximum energies of the accelerated protons mainly distribute around $10^{11}$ eV, and barely reach $10^{15}$ eV. The novae occurring in D-type SSs with ONe WDs and long orbital periods are good candidates for $γ$-ray sources. Due to a short orbita…
Context. Although the disc instability model is widely accepted as the explanation for dwarf nova outbursts, it is still necessary to confront its predictions to observations because much of the constraints on angular momentum transport in accretion discs are derived from the application of this model to real systems. Aims. We test the predictions of the model concerning the multicolour time evolution of outbursts for two well--observed systems, SS Cyg and VW Hyi. Methods. We calculate the multicolour evolution of dwarf nova outbursts using the disc instability model and taking into account th…
We observed the IW And-type dwarf nova ST Cha and found that standstills were terminated by brightening at a constant brightness level during standstills. This finding is not consistent with a model of IW And-type dwarf novae assuming repeated enhancements of the mass-transfer rate from the secondary. We found that one outburst in ST Cha had a shoulder during the rising branch at the same level in which standstills were terminated by brightening. This phenomenon is very similar to what are called "embedded precursors" in SS Cyg stars. We propose that these embedded precursors in both SS Cyg st…
To understand the physical processes governing accretion discs we can study active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-ray binary systems (XRBs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). It has been shown that XRBs and CVs show similar observational properties such as recurrent outbursts and aperiodic variability. The latter has been extensively studied for XRBs, but only recently have direct phenomenological analogies been found between XRBs and CVs, including the discovery of the rms--flux relation and the optical detection of Fourier-dependent time-lags. We present a Fourier analysis of the well-known CV SS Cy…
The connection between accretion and jet production in accreting white dwarf binary systems, especially dwarf novae, is not well understood. Radio wavelengths provide key insights into the mechanisms responsible for accelerating electrons, including jets and outflows. Here we present densely-sampled radio coverage, obtained with the Arcminute MicroKelvin Imager Large Array, of the dwarf nova SS Cyg during its February 2016 anomalous outburst. The outburst displayed a slower rise (3 days per mag) in the optical than typical ones, and lasted for more than 3 weeks. Rapid radio flaring on timescal…
We analyzed light curves of five neon novae, QU Vul, V351 Pup, V382 Vel, V693 CrA, and V1974 Cyg, and determined their white dwarf (WD) masses and distance moduli on the basis of theoretical light curves composed of free-free and photospheric emission. For QU Vul, we obtained a distance of d~2.4 kpc, reddening of E(B-V)~0.55, and WD mass of M_WD=0.82-0.96 M_sun. This suggests that an oxygen-neon WD lost a mass of more than ~0.1 M_sun since its birth. For V351 Pup, we obtained d~5.5 kpc, E(B-V)~0.45, and M_WD=0.98-1.1 M_sun. For V382 Vel, we obtained d~1.6 kpc, E(B-V)~0.15, and M_WD=1.13-1.28 M…
In 2010/3, the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi revealed a transient gamma-ray source, positionally coincident with the optical nova in the symbiotic binary, V407Cyg. This event marked the first discovery of gamma-ray emission from a nova. We aimed to obtain resolved radio imaging of the material involved in the nova event; to determine the ejecta geometry and advance velocity directly in the image plane; to constrain the physical conditions of the system. We observed the source with the EVN and the VLBA over 16 epochs, between 20 days and 6 months after the optical discovery. The source is…
Pre-outburst 2MASS and WISE photometry of Nova Sco 2014 (V1534 Sco) have suggested the presence of a cool giant at the location of the nova in the sky. The spectral evolution recorded for the nova did not however support a direct partnership because no flash-ionized wind and no deceleration of the ejecta were observed, contrary to the behavior displayed by other novae which erupted within symbiotic binaries like V407 Cyg or RS Oph. We have therefore obtained an 0.8-2.5 micron spectra of the remnant of Nova Sco 2014 in order to ascertain if a cool giant is indeed present and if it is physically…
We study the evolution of the normalized flux of selected ultraviolet emission lines of three classical novae (PW Vul, V1668 Cyg and V1974 Cyg). Different phases ofthe outbursts are studied. We attribute the spectral behavior of the three systems to the variation of the optical thickness and temperature of the envelope during the different phases of the outbursts. Our results are consistent with the theoretical models of classical novae. We also present optical photometric observations of the three systems in the post-novae phase. These observations show the variation of the light curves of th…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared IRS spectra, supplemented by ground-based optical observations, of the classical novae V1974 Cyg, V382 Vel, and V1494 Aql more than 11, 8, and 4 years after outburst respectively. The spectra are dominated by forbidden emission from neon and oxygen, though in some cases, there are weak signatures of magnesium, sulfur, and argon. We investigate the geometry and distribution of the late time ejecta by examination of the emission line profiles. Using nebular analysis in the low density regime, we estimate lower limits on the abundances in these nova…
We report on the detection of the linear rms-flux relation in two accreting white dwarf binary systems: V1504 Cyg and KIC 8751494. The rms-flux relation relates the absolute root-mean-square (rms) variability of the light curve to its mean flux. The light curves analysed were obtained with the Kepler satellite at a 58.8 s cadence. The rms-flux relation was previously detected in only one other cataclysmic variable, MV Lyr. This result reenforces the ubiquity of the linear rms-flux relation as a characteristic property of accretion-induced variability, since it has been observed in several blac…
We present the results of our studies of the aperiodic optical flux variability for SS Cyg, an accreting binary systemwith a white dwarf. The main set of observational data presented here was obtained with the ANDOR/iXon DU-888 photometer mounted on the RTT-150 telescope, which allowed a record(for CCD photometers) time resolution up to 8 ms to be achieved. The power spectra of the source's flux variability have revealed that the aperiodic variability contains information about the inner boundary of the optically thick flow in the binary system. We show that the inner boundary of the optically…
The bright Nova Cygni 1975 is a rare nova on a magnetic white dwarf (WD). Later it was found to be an asynchronous polar, now called V1500 Cyg. Our multisite photometric campaign occurring 40 years post eruption covered 26-nights (2015-2017). The reflection effect from the heated donor has decreased, but still dominates the op- tical radiation with an amplitude ~1^m.5. The 0^m.3 residual reveals cyclotron emission and ellipsoidal variations. Mean brightness modulation from night-to-night is used to measure the 9.6-d spin-orbit beat period that is due to changing accretion geometry including ma…
In this review, I present our current state of knowledge regarding both Classical Nova and Recurrent Nova systems. Two particular objects (V1974 Cyg and RS Oph) are chosen to illustrate the range of phenomena that may be associated with their outbursts. The wider importance of nova research is emphasised and some of the most pressing unsolved problems are summarised.
We studied the IW And star V507 Cyg using ASAS-SN data, ZTF data and our snapshot photometry. The star has been found to be in a long standstill in 2020 May-2022 March (and it still continues now). Such long-lasting standstills have been found in a few other IW And stars in the past literature. We found that this system was systematically fainter by 0.3 mag between 2018 March and 2019 January when it showed dwarf nova-type variations, including IW And-type states. This is one of the clearest pieces of evidence that the dwarf nova-type state in Z Cam stars (in a broader sense) is associated wit…
We search the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) archives of the two best studied dwarf novae in an attempt to find light curves for long outbursts that are extremely well-characterized. The systems are U Gem and SS Cyg. Our goal is to search for embedded precursors such as those that have been found recently in the high fidelity Kepler data for superoutbursts of some members of the SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae. For the vast majority of AAVSO data, the combination of low data cadence and large errors associated with individual measurements precludes one from making any s…
We obtained time-series radial velocity spectroscopy of twenty cataclysmic variable stars, with the aim of determining orbital periods P_orb. All of the stars reported here prove to have P_orb > 3.5 h. For sixteen of the stars, these are the first available period determinations, and for the remaining four (V709 Cas, AF Cam, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) we use new observations to improve the accuracy of previously-published periods. Most of the targets are dwarf novae, without notable idiosyncracies. Of the remainder, three (V709 Cas, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) are intermediate polars (DQ Her …
We present near-infrared and optical observations of the nova V496 Scuti 2009 covering various phases - pre-maximum, early decline and nebular - during the first 10 months of its discovery followed by limited observations in early part of 2011 April. The spectra follow the evolution of the nova when the lines had strong P Cygni profiles to a phase dominated by prominent emission lines. The notable feature of the near-IR spectra in the early decline phase is the rare presence of first overtone bands of carbon monoxide in emission. Later about 150 days after the peak brightness the IR spectra sh…
We present near-infrared spectroscopic and photometric observations of nova V5584 Sgr taken during the first 12 days following its discovery on Oct. 26.439 UT 2009. The evolution of the spectra is shown from the initial P Cygni phase to an emission line phase. The prominent carbon lines seen in the JHK spectra closely match those observed in a FeII class nova outburst. The spectra show first-overtone CO bands in emission between 2.29-2.40 micron. By examining WISE and other publicly available data, we show that the nova underwent a pronounced dust formation phase during February - April 2010.
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H$_{2}$O and SiO maser lines were performed toward the D-type symbiotic binary system V407 Cyg with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescope. These monitoring observations were carried out from March 2, 2010 (optical phase $ϕ$ = 0.0), 8 days before the nova outburst on March 10, 2010 to June 5, 2014 ($ϕ$ = 2.13). Eight days before the nova outburst, we detected the SiO $v$ = 1, 2, $J$ = 1--0 maser lines which exhibited values of 0.51 K ($\sim$ 6.70 Jy) and 0.71 K ($\sim$ 9.30 Jy), respectively, while after the outburst we could not detect…
