Formation Gibbs free energy of point defects and oxygen clusters in uranium dioxide at high-pressure high-temperature conditions are calculated from first principles, using the LSDA+U approach for the electronic structure and the Debye model for the lattice vibrations. The phonon contribution on Frenkel pairs is found to be notable, whereas it is negligible for the Schottky defect. Hydrostatic compression changes the formation energies drastically, making defect concentrations depend more sensitively on pressure. Calculations show that, if no oxygen clusters are considered, uranium vacancy becomes predominant in overstoichiometric UO2 with the aid of the contribution from lattice vibrations, while compression favors oxygen defects and suppresses uranium vacancy greatly. At ambient pressure, however, the experimental observation of predominant oxygen defects in this regime can be reproduced only in a form of cuboctahedral clusters, underlining the importance of defect clustering in UO2+x. Making use of the point defect model, an equation of state for non-stoichiometric oxides is established, which is then applied to describe the shock Hugoniot of UO2+x. Furthermore, the oxidization and compression behavior of uranium monoxide, triuranium octoxide, uranium trioxide, and a series of defective UO2 at zero Kelvin are investigated. The evolution of mechanical properties and electronic structures with an increase of the oxidation degree are analyzed, revealing the transition of the groundstate of uranium oxides from metallic to Mott insulator and then to charge-transfer insulator due to the interplay of strongly correlated effects of 5f orbitals and the shift of electrons from uranium to oxygen atoms.
We report an implementation of the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method within the projector augmented-wave framework. It allows for the calculation of the screened interaction in the same Wannier orbitals as our recent DFT+U and DFT+DMFT implementations. We present calculations of the dynamical Coulomb screened interaction in uranium dioxide and alpha and gamma cerium on Wannier functions. We show that a self-consistent calculation of the static screened interaction in DFT+U together with a consistent Wannier basis is mandatory for gamma cerium and uranium dioxide. We emphasiz…
The structural behavior of UO2 under high pressure up to 300GPa has been studied by first-principles calculations with LSDA+U approximation. The results show that a pressure-induced structural transition to the cotunnite-type (orthorhombic Pnma) phase occurs at 38GPa. It agrees well with the experimentally observed ~42 GPa. An isostructural transition following that is also predicted to take place from 80 to 130GPa, which has not yet been observed in experiments. Further high compression beyond 226GPa will result in a metallic and paramagnetic transition. It corresponds to a volume of 90A^3 pe…
In this work, the thermal transport properties of thorium dioxide (ThO$_2$, thoria) with low levels of substitutional uranium (U) doping are explored. We observe strong indications of resonant phonon scattering, an interaction between phonons and electronic degrees of freedom, induced by this doping in addition to common ``impurity'' scattering due to mass and interatomic force constant differences. Uranium doping levels of 6\%, 9\%, and 16\% were studied in a single hydrothermally synthesized U-doped thoria crystal with spatially-varying U doping levels. Within this crystal, isoconcentration …
Self-defect clusters in bulk matrix might affect the thermodynamic behavior of fission gases in nuclear fuel such as uranium dioxide. With first-principles LSDA+U calculations and taking xenon as a prototype, we find that the influence of oxygen defect clusters on the thermodynamics of gas atoms is prominent, which increases the solution energy of xenon by a magnitude of 0.5 eV, about 43% of the energy difference between the two lowest lying states at 700 K. Calculation also reveals a thermodynamic competition between the uranium vacancy and tri-vacancy sites to incorporate xenon in hyper-stoi…
We have investigated the grain boundary scattering effect on the thermal transport behavior of uranium dioxide (UO$_2$). The polycrystalline samples having different grain-sizes (0.125, 1.8, and 7.2 $μ$m) have been prepared by spark plasma sintering technique and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal transport properties (the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric power) have been measured in the temperature range 2-300~K and the results were analyzed in terms of various physical parameters contributing to the …
Uranium mononitride, UN, is considered a potential accident tolerant fuel due to its high uranium density, high thermal conductivity, and high melting point. Compared with the relatively inert UO2, UN has a high reactivity in water, however, studies have not considered the significant effect of radiation, which is known to cause corrosion of UO2. This study uses 0.1 M H2O2 to simulate the effects of water radiolysis in order to compare the radiolytic corrosion rates of UO2, UN, and U2N3 thin films at room temperature. X-ray reflectivity was used to investigate the changes in film morphology as…
A comprehensive investigation on point defects and their clustering behavior in nonstoichiometric uranium dioxide UO2+x is carried out using LSDA+U method based on density functional theory. Accurate energetic information and charge transfers available so far are obtained. With these energies that have improved more than 50% over that of pure GGA and LDA, we show the density functional theory predicts the predominance of oxygen defects over uranium ones at any compositions, which is possible only after treated the localized 5f electrons properly. Calculations also suggest an upper bound of x~0…
Uranium dioxide (UO$_2$), one of the most important nuclear fuels, can accumulate excess oxygen atoms as interstitial defects, which significantly impacts thermal properties. In this study, thermal conductivities and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on UO$_2$ and UO$_{2+x}$ (x=0.3, 0.4, 0.8, 0.11) were performed at low temperatures (2-300 K). The thermal conductivity of UO$_{2+x}$ is significantly suppressed compared to UO$_2$ except near the Néel temperature TN= 30.8 K, where it is independent of x. Phonon measurements demonstrate that the heat capacities and phonon group velocities …
Uranium dioxide (UO$_2$) remains a formidable challenge for first-principles approaches, due to the complex interplay among spin-orbit coupling, Mott physics, magnetic ordering, and crystal distortions. Here we use DFT+$U$ to explore UO$_2$ at zero temperature, incorporating all the aforementioned phenomena. The technical challenge is to navigate the many metastable electronic states produced by DFT+$U$, which is acomplished using $f$-orbital occupation matrix control to search for the ground state. We restrict our search to the high-symmetry ferromagnetic phase, including spin-orbit coupling,…
D. J. Antonio et al. report an x-ray diffraction experiment on uranium dioxide at high-magnetic field and low temperature. The authors have apparently not realized that the diffraction data actually shows unambiguously the presence of a rhombohedral distortion induced by the field at low temperature and the presence of more than one domain. Our note correctly analyses their data. The crystallographic analysis we perform is based on simple arguments with respect to plane spacings in slightly distorted cubic materials. Similar studies have been reported in many materials over the last 50 years. …
We report here the first direct observation of U(V) in uranium binary oxides and analyze the gradual conversion of the U oxidation state in the mixed uranium systems. Our finding clarifies previous contradicting results and provides important input for the geological disposal of spent fuel, recycling applications and chemistry of uranium species.
We provide a methodology for generating interatomic potentials for use in classical molecular dynamics simulations of atomistic phenomena occurring at energy scales ranging from lattice vibrations to crystal defects to high energy collisions. A rigorous method to objectively determine the shape of an interatomic potential over all length scales is introduced by building upon a charged-ion generalization of the well-known Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark universal potential that provides the short- and long-range limiting behavior of the potential. At intermediate ranges the potential is smoothly adju…
A uniform distribution of point defects in an otherwise perfect crystallographic structure usually describes a unique pseudo phase of that state of a non-stoichiometric material. With off-stoichiometric uranium dioxide as a prototype, we show that analogous to a conventional phase transition, these pseudo phases also will transform from one state into another via changing the predominant defect species when external conditions of pressure, temperature, or chemical composition are varied. This exotic transition is numerically observed along shock Hugoniots and isothermal compression curves in U…
Our series of articles is devoted to high-precision molecular dynamics simulation of mixed actinide-oxide (MOX) fuel in the rigid ions approximation using high-performance graphics processors (GPU). In this article we assess the 10 most relevant interatomic sets of pair potential (SPP) by reproduction of the Bredig superionic phase transition (anion sublattice premelting) in uranium dioxide. The measurements carried out in a wide temperature range from 300K up to melting point with 1K accuracy allowed reliable detection of this phase transition with each SPP. The λ-peaks obtained are smoother …
The oxidation state of titanium in titanium dioxide is commonly assumed to be +4. This assumption is used ubiquitously to rationalize phenomena observed with TiO2. We present a comprehensive electronic structure investigation of Ti ions, TiO2 molecules and TiO2 bulk crystals, using different density functional theory and wave function-based approaches, which suggests a lower oxidation state (+3). Specifically, there is evidence of a significant remaining contribution from valence s and d electrons of Ti, including the presence of a nuclear cusp around the Ti core. The charge corresponding to v…

We present a study of the structural phase transition, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of UO$_{2}$ by means of the local density approximation (LDA)$+U$ approach. A phase transition pressure of 40 GPa, which agrees well with the experimental value of 42 GPa, is obtained from theory at 0 K. Pressure-induced enhancements of elastic constants, elastic moduli, elastic wave velosities, and Debye temperature of the fluorite phase are observed. Phonon spectrums of both the ground state fluorite structure and high pressure cotunnite structure calculated by the supercell approach show that the …
Vanadium dioxide is a complex oxide material, which shows large resistivity and optical reflectance change while transitioning from the insulator to metal phase at ~68 °C. In this work, we use a modified atmospheric thermal oxidation method to oxidize RF-sputtered Vanadium films. Structural, surface-morphology and phase-transition properties of the oxidized films as a function of oxidation duration are presented. Phase-pure VO2 films are obtained by oxidizing ~130 nm Vanadium films in short oxidation duration of ~30 seconds. Compared to previous reports on VO2 synthesis using atmospheric oxida…

We investigate the charge density distribution in titanium dioxide, molecular titanium complexes and a variety of periodic titanium compounds using delocalization indices and Bader charge analysis. Our results are in agreement with previous experimental and theoretical investigations on the charge stability and deviation from formal oxidation states in transition metal compounds. We present examples for practically relevant redox processes, using molecular titanium dioxide model systems, that illustrate the failure of formal oxidation states to account for some redox phenomena. We observe a pr…
Direct comparisons between statistically sound simulations of ion-tracks and published experimental measurements of range densities of iodine implants in uranium dioxide have been made with implant energies in the range of 100-800 keV. Our simulations are conducted with REED-MD (Rare Event Enhanced Domain-following Molecular Dynamics) in order to account for the materials structure in both single crystalline and polycrystalline experimental samples. We find near-perfect agreement between REED-MD results and experiments for polycrystalline target materials.
A R&D program is developed at the ALTO facility to provide new beams of exotic neutron-rich nuclei, as intense as possible. In the framework of European projects, it has been shown that the use of refractory targets with nanometric structure allows us to obtain beams of nuclei unreachable until now. The first parameter to be controlled in the processing to obtain targets with a homogeneous nanostructure is the grinding of uranium dioxide, down to 100 nm grain size. In this study, dry and wet grinding routes are studied and the powders are analyzed in terms of phase stabilization, specific surf…
The results of DFT supercell calculations of oxygen behavior upon the UN (001) and (110) surfaces as well as at the tilt grain boundary are presented. Oxygen adsorption, migration, incorporation into the surface N vacancies on (001) and (110) surfaces have been modeled using 2D slabs of different thicknesses and supercell sizes. The temperature dependences of the N vacancy formation energies and oxygen incorporation energies are calculated. We demonstrate that O atoms easily penetrate into UN surfaces and grain boundaries containing N vacancies, due to negative incorporation energies and a sma…
The incorporation of oxygen atoms has been simulated into either nitrogen or uranium vacancy at the UN(001) surface, sub-surface or central layers. For calculations on the corresponding slab models both the relativistic pseudopotentials and the method of projector augmented-waves (PAW) as implemented in the VASP computer code have been used. The energies of O atom incorporation and solution within the defective UN surface have been calculated and discussed. For different configurations of oxygen ions at vacancies within the UN(001) slab, the calculated density of states and electronic charge r…
The ground state electronic structures of the actinide oxides AO, A2O3 and AO2 (A=U, Np, Pu, Am, Cm, Bk, Cf) are determined from first-principles calculations, using the self-interaction corrected local spin-density (SIC-LSD) approximation. Emphasis is put on the degree of f-electron localization, which for AO2 and A2O3 is found to follow the stoichiometry, namely corresponding to A(4+) ions in the dioxide and A(3+) ions in the sesquioxides. In contrast, the A(2+) ionic configuration is not favorable in the monoxides, which therefore become metallic. The energetics of the oxidation and reducti…
The structure, composition and electrophysical characteristics of low-temperature silicon dioxide films under influence of various technology factors, such as ion implantation, laser irradiation, thermal and photonic annealing, have been studied. Silicon dioxide films have been obtained by monosilane oxidation using plasma chemical method, reactive cathode sputtering, and tetraethoxysilane pyrolysis. In the capacity of substrates, germanium, silicon, gallium arsenide and gallium nitride were used. Structure and composition of the dielectric films were analyzed by methods of infrared transmissi…
Swelling of uranium dioxide with ingrowth of defects by irradiation is not fully understood. Experimental and theoretical groups have attempted to explain this phenomenon with various complex theories. In this study, experimental lattice expansion and super saturation of the lattice were well reproduced by molecular dynamics simulation method. From the resemblance with the experimental data, here it is manifested that only oxygen frenkel pairs were created in the fission induced lattice while alpha particle radiation causes both oxygen and considerable amount of uranium defects. Moreover, in t…
α-particle irradiated single-crystal isostructural oxide lattices (CmO2, AmO2, CeO2, UO2, NpO2, PuO2, ThO2) were modeled by molecular dynamics simulation method. Lattice parameter changes with IFP cation defects displayed exponential increases. These data were compatible with the available lattice parameter changes with α-particle dose experiments. Pre- and post- peaks emerged around principal peaks of irradiated oxide cation-cation radial distribution functions, which indicate obstruction and distortion type defects, respectively. Dependence of lattice dilatations on the number of obstruction…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the ground state, electric charge doping, and electronic properties of titanium and titanium dioxide monolayers adsorbed on a graphene surface. A new ground state structrure of Ti monolayer adsorbed on graphene is reported which is shown to be stable up to T = 500 K. Effects due to lower and higher Ti adatoms coverage are studied. We find that the adsorbed Ti provides a strong n-type doping which supports recent experimental observations. On the other hand, TiO_2 can induce both p- and n-type dop…
Methane (CH_4) gas sensing properties of novel vanadium dioxide (VO_2) nanostructured films is reported for the first time. The single phase nanostructures are synthesized by pulsed dc-magnetron sputtering of V target followed by oxidation in O_2 atmosphere at 550 ^oC. The partial pressure of O_2 is controlled to obtain stoichiometric VO_2 with the samples showing rutile monoclinic crystalline symmetry and regions of rod shaped nano-architectures. These nanostructured films exhibit a reversible semiconductor to metal transition in the temperature range of 60-70 ^oC. Gas sensing experiments are…
This paper offers a study of oxygen dissolution into a solid, and its consequences on the mechanical behaviour of the material. In fact, mechanical strains strongly influence the oxidation processes and may be, in some materials, responsible for cracking. To realize this study, mechanical considerations are introduced into the classical diffusion laws. Simulations were made for the particular case of uranium dioxide, which undergoes the chemical fragmentation. According to our simulations, the hypothesis of a compression stress field into the oxidised UO2 compound near the internal interface i…
Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a phase transition material that undergoes a reversible insulator-metal phase transition at ~ 68 C. Atmospheric pressure thermal oxidation (APTO) of vanadium (V) is a simple VO2 synthesis method in which V thin film is oxidized in open air. For an optimum oxidation duration, VO2 films are obtained with good phase transition properties. We recently reported a modified APTO process using a step temperature profile for oxidation (Thin Solid Films 706, 138003 (2020)). We demonstrated an ultra-low thermal budget synthesis of VO2 thin films with good electrical and optical …
We have applied the bond valence method to cerium oxides to determine the oxidation states of the Ce ion at the various site symmetries of the crystals. The crystals studied include cerium dioxide and the two sesquioxides along with some selected intermediate phases which are crystallographically well characterized. Our results indicate that cerium dioxide has a mixed-valence ground state with an f-electron population on the Ce site of 0.27 while both the A- and C-sesquioxides have a nearly pure f^1 configuration. The Ce sites in most of the intermediate oxides have non-integral valences. Furt…
By first-principles LSDA+U calculations, we revealed that the current physical picture of defective uranium dioxide suggested solely by neutron diffraction analysis is unsatisfactory. An understanding based on quantum theory has been established as a thermodynamical competition among point defects and cuboctahedral cluster, which naturally interprets the puzzled origin of the asymmetric O' and O'' interstitials. It also gives a clear and consistent agreement with most available experimental data. Unfortunately, the observed high occupation of O'' site cannot be accounted for in this picture an…
The stability mechanism of cuboctahedral clusters in nonstoichiometric uranium dioxide is investigated by first-principles LSDA+U method. Calculations reveal that the structural stability is inherited from U6O12 molecular cluster whereas the energy gain through occupying its center with an additional oxygen makes the cluster win out by competition with point oxygen interstitials. Local displacement of the center oxygen along <111> direction also leads the cluster 8-folded degeneracy and increases relatively the concentration at finite temperatures. But totally, elevation of temperature, i.e., …
Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) is a strongly correlated material, which exhibits insulator to metal transition at ~68 C along with large resistivity and infrared optical reflectance modulation. In this work, we use atmospheric pressure thermal oxidation of Vanadium to synthesize VO2 films on glass and ITO coated glass substrates. With the optimized short oxidation durations of 2 min and 4 min, the synthesized VO2 film shows high optical reflectance switching in long-wavelength infrared on glass substrates and mid-wavelength infrared on ITO coated glass substrates, respectively. Peak reflectance switch…
Crystal growth experiments (micro-pulling down or Czochralski methods, respectively) and DTA/TG measurements with Fe2+ containing olivines (fayalite--forsterite solid solution) and with FeO (wustite) are performed. For both substances the oxygen partial pressure p_O2 of the growth atmosphere had to be adjusted within the stability region of Fe2+ for all temperatures ranging from room temperature to the melting point. The formation of Fe3+ (Fe3O4, Fe2O3) had to be avoided. The adjustment of p_O2 could be obtained by a mixture of argon, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Thermodynamic equilibri…
Interatomic potentials of uranium dioxide are investigated on their applicability to model structural stabilities beyond fluorite phase by comparing with ab-initio results. A high pressure cotunnite phase and loosely stacking virtual crystal are involved in order to get a primary confidence for large-scale deformation modelings of UO2 under irradiation damages. The behavior of Xe atoms in UO2 fuel is studied with molecular dynamics simulations. Besides the ground state bubble geometry, we find that a planar distribution is also (meta-) stable for xenon under thermodynamic perturbations. The Xe…
Muon spin rotation with low-energy muons (LEμSR) is a powerful nuclear method where electrical and magnetic properties of surface-near regions and thin films can be studied on a length scale of $\approx$\SI{200}{\nano\meter}. In this work, we show the potential of utilizing low-energy muons for a depth-resolved characterization of oxide-semiconductor interfaces, i.e. for silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (4H-SiC). Silicon dioxide (SiO$_2$) grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and by thermal oxidation of the SiO$_2$-semiconductor interface are compared with respect to inter…
In this work using the density functional theory (DFT), we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of uranium dioxide with antiferromagnetic 1k-, 2k-, and 3k-order structures. Ordinary approximations in DFT, such as the local density approximation (LDA) or generalized gradient approximation (GGA), usually predict incorrect metallic behaviors for this strongly correlated electron system. Using Hubbard term correction for f-electrons, LDA+U method, as well as using the screened Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional for the exchange-correlation (XC), we have obta…
The uranium mononitride (UN) is a material considered as a promising candidate for Generation-IV nuclear reactor fuels. Unfortunately, oxygen in air affects UN fuel performance and stability. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of oxygen adsorption and further UN oxidation in the bulk and at surface. Recently, we performed a detailed study on oxygen interaction with UN surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We were able to identify an atomistic mechanism of UN surface oxidation consisting of several important steps, starting with the oxygen molecule diss…
Copper dopants are varyingly reported to enhance photocatalytic activity at titanium dioxide surfaces through uncertain mechanisms. In order to interpret how copper doping might alter the performance of titanium dioxide photocatalysts in aqueous media we applied density functional theory methods to simulate surface units of doped anatase (101) planes. By including van der Waals interactions, we consider the energetics of adsorbed water at anatase surfaces in pristine and copper doped systems. Simulation results indicate that copper dopant at anatase (101) surfaces is most stable in a 2+ oxidat…
To efficiently capture the energy of the nuclear bond, advanced nuclear reactor concepts seek solid fuels that must withstand unprecedented temperature and radiation extremes. In these advanced fuels, thermal energy transport under irradiation is directly related to reactor performance as well as reactor safety. The science of thermal transport in nuclear fuel is a grand challenge due to both computational and experimental complexities. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of thermal transport research on two actinide oxides: one currently in use in commercial nuclear reactors, uranium diox…

In this first article 10 most recent and widely used interatomic sets of pair potentials (SPP) are assessed by reproduction of solid phase properties of uranium dioxide (UO2) - temperature dependences of the lattice constant, bulk modulus, enthalpy and heat capacity. Measurements were performed with 1K accuracy in a wide temperature range from 300K up to melting poin…
We report first-principles calculations of the phonon dispersion spectrum, thermal expansion, and heat capacity of uranium dioxide. The so-called direct method, based on the quasiharmonic approximation, is used to calculate the phonon frequencies within a density functional framework for the electronic structure. The phonon dispersions calculated at the theoretical equilibrium volume agree well with experimental dispersions. The computed phonon density of states (DOS) compare reasonably well with measurement data, as do also the calculated frequencies of the Raman and infrared active modes inc…
Magnetic response of uranium dioxide (UO2) has been investigated through temperature and magnetic field dependent dc magnetization measurements. UO2 is a paramagnet at room temperature. The magnetic susceptibility, however, deviates from Curie-Weiss (CW) like paramagnetic behavior below T = 280 K. Further down the temperature UO2 undergoes phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state below TN = 30.6 K. The zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetizations exhibit some distinct thermomagnetic irreversibility below TN. The temperature dependence of the FC magnetization is more like …
