The energy level density distributions of some Haldane-Shastry like spin chains associated with the $A_{N-1}$ root system have been computed recently by Enciso et al., exploiting the connection of these spin systems with inhomogeneous one-dimensional vertex models whose energy functions depend on the vertices through specific polynomials of first or second degree. Here we consider a much broader class of one-dimensional vertex models whose energy functions depend on the vertices through arbitrary polynomials of any possible degree. We estimate the order of mean and variance for such energy functions and show that the level density distribution of all vertex models belonging to this class asymptotically follow the Gaussian pattern for large number of vertices. We also present some numerical evidence in support of this analytical result.
We define a class of $Y(sl_{(m|n)})$ Yangian invariant Haldane-Shastry (HS) like spin chains, by assuming that their partition functions can be written in a particular form in terms of the super Schur polynomials. Using some properties of the super Schur polynomials, we show that the partition functions of this class of spin chains are equivalent to the partition functions of a class of one-dimensional vertex models with appropriately defined energy functions. We also establish a boson-fermion duality relation for the partition functions of this class of supersymmetric HS like spin chains by u…
According to a long-standing conjecture of Berry and Tabor, the distribution of the spacings between consecutive levels of a "generic'' integrable model should follow Poisson's law. In contrast, the spacings distribution of chaotic systems typically follows Wigner's law. An important exception to the Berry-Tabor conjecture is the integrable spin chain with long-range interactions introduced by Haldane and Shastry in 1988, whose spacings distribution is neither Poissonian nor of Wigner's type. In this letter we argue that the cumulative spacings distribution of this chain should follow the "squ…
We introduce a class of generalized Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (gLMG) models with su$(m)$ interactions of Haldane-Shastry type. We have computed the partition function of these models in closed form by exactly evaluating the partition function of the restriction of a spin chain Hamiltonian of Haldane-Shastry type to subspaces with well-defined magnon numbers. As a byproduct of our analysis, we have obtained strong numerical evidence of the Gaussian character of the level density of the latter restricted Hamiltonians, and studied the distribution of the spacings of consecutive unfolded levels. We hav…
By using the Y(gl(m|n)) super Yangian symmetry of the SU(m|n) supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry spin chain, we show that the partition function of this model satisfies a duality relation under the exchange of bosonic and fermionic spin degrees of freedom. As a byproduct of this study of the duality relation, we find a novel combinatorial formula for the super Schur polynomials associated with some irreducible representations of the Y(gl(m|n)) Yangian algebra. Finally, we reveal an intimate connection between the global SU(m|n) symmetry of a spin chain and the boson-fermion duality relation.
We derive an exact expression for the partition function of the su(m) Haldane-Shastry spin chain, which we use to study the density of levels and the distribution of the spacing between consecutive levels. Our computations show that when the number of sites N is large enough the level density is Gaussian to a very high degree of approximation. More surprisingly, we also find that the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution is not Poissonian, so that this model departs from the typical behavior for an integrable system. We show that the cumulative spacing distribution of the model can be well app…
We provide a rigorous proof of the fact that the level density of all su(m) spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type associated with the A_{N-1} root system approaches a Gaussian distribution as the number of spins N tends to infinity. Our approach is based on the study of the large N limit of the characteristic function of the level density, using the description of the spectrum in terms of motifs and the asymptotic behavior of the dispersion relation.
We study the thermodynamic properties of spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type associated with the A_{N-1} root system in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. To this end, we exactly compute the partition function of these models for an arbitrary finite number of spins. We then show that these chains are equivalent to a suitable inhomogeneous classical Ising model in a spatially dependent magnetic field, generalizing the results of Basu-Mallick et al. for thezero magnetic field case. Using the standard transfer matrix approach, we are able to compute in closed form the free energy …
We study the open version of the su$(m|n)$ supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry spin chain associated to the $BC_N$ extended root system. We first evaluate the model's partition function by modding out the dynamical degrees of freedom of the su$(m|n)$ supersymmetric spin Sutherland model of $BC_N$ type, whose spectrum we fully determine. We then construct a generalized partition function depending polynomially on two sets of variables, which yields the standard one when evaluated at a suitable point. We show that this generalized partition function can be written in terms of two variants of the clas…
We show that the density of energy levels of a wide class of finite-dimensional quantum systems tends to a Gaussian distribution as the number of degrees of freedom increases. Our result is based on a nontrivial modification of the classical central limit theorem, and is especially suited to models whose partition function is explicitly known. In particular, we provide the first theoretical explanation of the fact that the level density of several spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type is asymptotically Gaussian when the number of sites tends to infinity.
The ground state and low energy excitations of the SU(m|n) supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry spin chain are analyzed. In the thermodynamic limit, it is found that the ground state degeneracy is finite only for the SU(m|0) and SU(m|1) spin chains, while the dispersion relation for the low energy and low momentum excitations is linear for all values of m and n. We show that the low energy excitations of the SU(m|1) spin chain are described by a conformal field theory of m non-interacting Dirac fermions which have only positive energies; the central charge of this theory is m/2. Finally, for n \ge 1…
The nonlocal factors of spin correlations are introduced for lattice spin models. Based on this concept, we investigate the nonlocal behavior of the Haldane-Shastry model with or without ring frustration. The ground state and spin correlations of the Haldane-Shastry model are calculated for both even and odd number of spins, then the nonlocal factors can be deduced analytically. It is found that the nonlocal factor due the ring frustration is the same as the Heisenberg model.
By taking the freezing limit of a spin Calogero-Sutherland model containing `anyon like' representation of the permutation algebra, we derive the exact partition function of SU(m|n) supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry (HS) spin chain. This partition function allows us to study global properties of the spectrum like level density distribution and nearest neighbour spacing distribution. It is found that, for supersymmetric HS spin chains with large number of lattice sites, continuous part of the energy level density obeys Gaussian distribution with a high degree of accuracy. The mean value and standa…
We generalize the Matrix Product States method using the chiral vertex operators of Conformal Field Theory and apply it to study the ground states of the XXZ spin chain, the J1-J2 model and random Heisenberg models. We compute the overlap with the exact wave functions, spin-spin correlators and the Renyi entropy, showing that critical systems can be described by this method. For rotational invariant ansatzs we construct an inhomogenous extension of the Haldane-Shastry model with long range exchange interactions.
We consider the supersymmetric Calogero-Sutherland type N-particle problems in one dimension and show that the corresponding fermionic part can be identified with the generalized X-Y models in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. In particular we show that the generalized Haldane-Shastry models (with magnetic field) are themselves the fermionic partners of the Calogero-Sutherland type models. Several such models are discussed and a recipe is given for constructing spin models and finding their ground state energy from the corresponding N-particle problems.
The SU($ν$) generalized Haldane-Shastry spin chain with $1/r^2$ interaction is studied with twisted boundary conditions. The exact wavefunctions of Jastrow type are obtained for every rational value of the twist angle in unit of $2π$. The spectral flow of the ground state is then discussed as a function of the twist angle. By resorting to the motif picture in the Bethe ansatz method, we show that the period of the spectral flow is $ν$, which is determined by the statistical interaction in exclusion statistics.
The Haldane-Shastry spin chain can be mapped to the infinite coupling limit of the SU(2) spin Calogero-Sutherland model. We use the $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ Jack polynomials' technology to compute the form factors of the spin operator on the multi-spinon spectrum. The spin structure factor is obtained through a form factor expansion. The expansion is proven to converge in the small momentum limit. Numerics based on two- and four-spinons contributions give an approximate result for the infinite temperature static and dynamic spin structure factor.
The Haldane-Shastry model is one of the most studied interacting spin systems. The Yangian symmetry makes it exactly solvable, and the model has semionic excitations. We introduce disorder into the Haldane-Shastry model by allowing the spins to sit at random positions on the unit circle and study the properties of the eigenstates. At weak disorder, the spectrum is similar to the spectrum of the clean Haldane-Shastry model. At strong disorder, the long-range interactions in the model do not decay as a simple power law. The eigenstates in the middle of the spectrum follow a volume law, but the c…

We present analytical and numerical results regarding the magnetization full counting statistics (FCS) of a subsystem in the ground-state of the Haldane-Shastry chain. Exact Pfaffian expressions are derived for the cumulant generating function, as well as any observable diagonal in the spin basis. In the limit of large systems, the scaling of the FCS is found to be in agreement with the Luttinger liquid theory. The same techniques are also applied to inhomogeneous deformations of the chain. This introduces a certain amount of disorder in the system; however we show numerically that this is not…
The dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ of the K-component (K = 2,3,4) spin chain with the 1/r^2 exchange is derived exactly at zero temperature for arbitrary size of the system. The result is interpreted in terms of a free quasi-particle picture which is generalization of the spinon picture in the SU(2) case; the excited states consist of K quasi-particles each of which is characterized by a set of K-1 quantum numbers. Divergent singularities of $S(q,ω)$ at the spectral edges are derived analytically. The analytic result is checked numerically for finite systems.
By using a class of `anyon like' representations of permutation algebra, which pick up nontrivial phase factors while interchanging the spins of two lattice sites, we construct some integrable variants of $SU(M)$ Haldane-Shastry (HS) spin chain. Lax pairs and conserved quantities for these spin chains are also found and it is established that these models exhibit multi-parameter deformed or nonstandard variants of $Y(gl_M)$ Yangian symmetry. Moreover, by projecting the eigenstates of Dunkl operators in a suitable way, we derive a class of exact eigenfunctions for such HS like spin chain and su…

We compute the partition function of the su(m) Polychronakos-Frahm spin chain of BC_N type by means of the freezing trick. We use this partition function to study several statistical properties of the spectrum, which turn out to be analogous to those of other spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type. In particular, we find that when the number of particles is sufficiently large the level density follows a Gaussian distribution with great accuracy. We also show that the distribution of (normalized) spacings between consecutive levels is of neither Poisson nor Wigner type, but is qualitatively simila…
The ground-state properties of the S=1 Haldane-Shastry model are studied using a modified Lanczos algorithm and diagonalizing exactly small chains. We find evidence that, as for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, the spectrum shows a gap, in contrast to the S=1/2 case. The correlation functions <S^{z}(0)S^{z}(m)> decay exponentially for large m. We find that the correlation functions for the Haldane-Shastry model decay faster than for the Heisenberg model. We estimate the infinite system limit for the ground-state energy, value of the gap and correlation functions.
We compute the spectrum of the su(m) spin Sutherland model of B_N type, including the exact degeneracy of all energy levels. By studying the large coupling constant limit of this model and of its scalar counterpart, we evaluate the partition function of their associated spin chain of Haldane-Shastry type in closed form. With the help of the formula for the partition function thus obtained we study the chain's spectrum, showing that it cannot be obtained as a limiting case of its BC_N counterpart. The structure of the partition function also suggests that the spectrum of the Haldane-Shastry spi…
We show how to couple two free-fermion chains so that the excitations consist of Cooper pairs with zero energy, and free particles obeying (mutual) exclusion statistics. This behavior is reminiscent of anyonic superconductivity, and of a ferromagnetic version of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain, although here the interactions are local. We solve this model using the nested Bethe ansatz, and find all the eigenstates; the Cooper pairs correspond to exact-string or ``0/0'' solutions of the Bethe equations. We show how the model possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra, which is a supersym…
Motivated by the on-going investigation of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under pressure, we study a variant of the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland (SS) spin-1/2 model with two types of dimers. Combined with the frustration of the SS model, this modification induces, in a large parameter range, a dimensional reduction at low energies, with nearly decoupled effective S=1 Haldane chains forming along one of the diagonals of the lattice. We also present evidence that the intermediate plaquette solid phase of the undistorted SS model remains stable in a finite region of the phase diagram.
In this paper we study the su(m) spin Sutherland (trigonometric) model of D_N type and its related spin chain of Haldane-Shastry type obtained by means of Polychronakos's freezing trick. As in the rational case recently studied by the authors, we show that these are new models, whose properties cannot be simply deduced from those of their well-known BC_N counterparts by taking a suitable limit. We identify the Weyl-invariant extended configuration space of the spin dynamical model, which turns out to be the N-dimensional generalization of a rhombic dodecahedron. This is in fact one of the reas…
We present an integrability-preserving recursion relation for the explicit construction of long-range spin chain Hamiltonians. These chains are generalizations of the Haldane-Shastry and Inozemtsev models and they play an important role in recent advances in string/gauge duality. The method is based on arbitrary nearest-neighbour integrable spin chains and it sheds light on the moduli space of deformation parameters. We also derive the closed chain asymptotic Bethe equations.
We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of su($m|n$) supersymmetric spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type with a chemical potential term. We obtain a closed-form expression for the partition function and deduce a description of the spectrum in terms of the supersymmetric version of Haldane's motifs, which we apply to obtain an analytic expression for the free energy per site in the thermodynamic limit. By studying the low-temperature behavior of the free energy, we characterize the critical behavior of the chains with $1\le m,n\le2$, determining the critical regions and the correspondi…
We introduce a family of Jastrow pair product states for quasi one-dimensional spin systems. Depending on a parameter they interpolate between the resonating valence bond ground state of the Haldane-Shastry model describing a spin liquid and the (dimerized) valence bond solid ground states of the Majumdar-Ghosh spin chain. These states are found to form an excellent basis for variational studies of Heisenberg chains with next nearest neighbour interaction and bond alternation as realized in the spin-Peierls system CuGeO_3.
We present a field-theoretic renormalization group calculation in two loop order for classical O(N)-models with an inverse square interaction in the vicinity of their lower critical dimensionality one. The magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures is shown to diverge like $T^{-a} \exp(b/T)$ with $a=(N-2)/(N-1)$ and $b=2π^2/(N-1)$. From a comparison with the exactly solvable Haldane-Shastry model we find that the same temperature dependence applies also to ferromagnetic quantum spin chains.
We define a class of tensor network states for spin systems where the individual tensors are functionals of fields. The construction is based on the path integral representation of correlators of operators in quantum field theory. These tensor network states are infinite dimensional versions of matrix product states and projected entangled pair states. We find the field-tensor that generates the Haldane-Shastry wave function and extend it to two dimensions. We give evidence that the latter underlies the topological chiral state described by the Kalmeyer-Laughlin wave function.
The Shastry-Sutherland model as a canonical example of frustrated magnetism has been extensively studied. The conventional wisdom has been that the transition from the plaquette valence bond order to the Neel order is direct and potentially realizes a deconfined quantum critical point beyond the Ginzburg-Landau paradigm. This scenario however was challenged recently by improved numerics from density matrix renormalization group which offers evidence for a narrow gapless spin liquid between the two phases. Prompted by this controversy and to shed light on this intricate parameter regime from a …
We study the spin Calogero model of D_N type with polarized spin reversal operators, as well as its associated spin chain of Haldane-Shastry type, both in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. We compute the spectrum and the partition function of the former model in closed form, from which we derive an exact formula for the chain's partition function in terms of products of partition functions of Polychronakos-Frahm spin chains of type A. Using a recursion relation for the latter partition functions that we derive in the paper, we are able to numerically evaluate the partition functio…
Under an appropriate symmetric extensive bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, resembling the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the SPT phase from the trivial (vacuum) state. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry breaking phase transitions. For the $S=1$ SPT (Haldane) phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki exact wave function, the resulting critical entanglement spectrum has a residual entropy per lattice site $s_{r}=0.67602$, …
We introduce a new class of open, translationally invariant spin chains with long-range interactions depending on both spin permutation and (polarized) spin reversal operators, which includes the Haldane-Shastry chain as a particular degenerate case. The new class is characterized by the fact that the Hamiltonian is invariant under "twisted" translations, combining an ordinary translation with a spin flip at one end of the chain. It includes a remarkable model with elliptic spin-spin interactions, smoothly interpolating between the XXX Heisenberg model with anti-periodic boundary conditions an…
As is well known, energy levels appearing in the highly degenerate spectra of the $A_{N-1}$ type of Haldane-Shastry and Polychronakos spin chains can be classified through the motifs, which are characterized by some sequences of the binary digits like `0' and `1'. In a similar way, at present we classify all energy levels appearing in the spectra of the $BC_N$ type of Polychronakos spin chains with Hamiltonians containing supersymmetric analogue of polarized spin reversal operators. To this end, we show that the $BC_N$ type of multivariate super Rogers-Szegö (SRS) polynomials, which at a certa…
In integrable one-dimensional quantum systems an infinite set of local conserved quantities exists which can prevent a current from decaying completely. For cases like the spin current in the XXZ model at zero magnetic field or the charge current in the attractive Hubbard model at half filling, however, the current operator does not have overlap with any of the local conserved quantities. We show that in these situations transport at finite temperatures is dominated by a diffusive contribution with the Drude weight being either small or even zero. For the XXZ model we discuss in detail the rel…
Resta proposed a definition of the electric polarization in one-dimensional systems in terms of the ground-state expectation value of the large gauge transformation operator. Vanishing of the expectation value in the thermodynamic limit implies that the system is a conductor. We study Resta's polarization amplitude (expectation value) in the $S=1/2$ XXZ chain and its several generalizations, in the gapless conducting Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid phase. We obtain an analytical expression in the lowest-order perturbation theory about the free fermion point (XY chain), and an exact result for the Ha…
We introduce a general class of su$(1|1)$ supersymmetric spin chains with long-range interactions which includes as particular cases the su$(1|1)$ Inozemtsev (elliptic) and Haldane-Shastry chains, as well as the XX model. We show that this class of models can be fermionized with the help of the algebraic properties of the su$(1|1)$ permutation operator, and take advantage of this fact to analyze their quantum criticality when a chemical potential term is present in the Hamiltonian. We first study the low energy excitations and the low temperature behavior of the free energy, which coincides wi…
All eigenstates and eigenvalues are determined for the spin- 1/2 $XXZ$ chain $H = 2J \sum_i ( S_{i}^{x} S_{i + 1}^{x} + S_{i}^{y} S_{i + 1}^{y} + ΔS_i^z S_{i + 1}^{z})$ for rings with up to N=16 spins, for anisotropies $Δ=0 , \cos(0.3π)$, and 1. The dynamic spin pair correlations $< S_{l+n}^μ(t) S_l^μ > , (μ=x,z)$, the dynamic structure factors $S^μ(q,ω)$, and the intermediate structure factors $I^μ(q,t)$ are calculated for arbitrary temperature T. It is found, that for all T, $S^{z}(q,ω)$ is mainly concentrated on the region $|ω| < \varepsilon_2(q)$, where $\varepsilon_2(q)$ is the upper boun…
A way to characterize multipartite entanglement in pure states of a spin chain with $n$ sites and local dimension $d$ is by means of the Cayley hyperdeterminant. The latter quantity is a polynomial constructed with the components of the wave function $ψ_{i_1, \dots, i_n}$ which is invariant under local unitary transformation. For spin 1/2 chains (i.e. $d=2$) with $n=2$ and $n=3$ sites, the hyperdeterminant coincides with the concurrence and the tangle respectively. In this paper we consider spin chains with $n=4$ sites where the hyperdeterminant is a polynomial of degree 24 containing around $…
