We consider the supersymmetric Calogero-Sutherland type N-particle problems in one dimension and show that the corresponding fermionic part can be identified with the generalized X-Y models in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. In particular we show that the generalized Haldane-Shastry models (with magnetic field) are themselves the fermionic partners of the Calogero-Sutherland type models. Several such models are discussed and a recipe is given for constructing spin models and finding their ground state energy from the corresponding N-particle problems.
We discuss the phase diagram of the Shastry-Sutherland model for arbitrary spin S and derive rigorous lower and upper bounds on the phase boundaries of the dimer phase by using various versions of a variational ansatz in combination with the exact diagonalisation method.
A star-triangle mapping transformation is used to establish an exact correspondence between the spin-1/2 Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland (orthogonal-dimer) lattice and respectively, the spin-1/2 Ising model on a bathroom tile (4-8) lattice. Exact results for the critical temperature and spontaneous magnetization are obtained and compared with corresponding results on the regular Ising lattices.
A method for the study of the ground states of lattice-gas models or equivalent spin models with extended-range interactions is developed. It is shown that effect of longer-range interactions can be studied in terms of the solution of the ground-state problem for a model with short-range interactions. The method is applied to explain the emergence of fractional magnetization plateaus in TmB4 that is regarded as a strong Ising magnet on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice.
By using perturbation calculation and numerical diagonalization, low-energy spin dynamics of the Shastry-Sutherland model is investigated paying particular attention to the two-particle coherent motion. In addition to spin-singlet- and triplet bound states, we find novel branches of coherent motion of a bound quintet pair, which are usually unstable because of repulsion. Unusual dispersion observed in neutron-scattering measurements are explained by the present theory. The importance of the effects of phonon is also pointed out.
A complete solution of the ground-state problem for an Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with an additional interaction along the diagonals of "empty" squares in an applied magnetic field is presented. A rigorous proof is given that this interaction gives rise to a plateau at one-half of the saturation magnetization. Such a fractional plateau has been observed in some rare-earth-metal tetraborides, in particular, in strong Ising magnets ErB4 (where it is the only one) and TmB4 (where it is the broadest one), but its origin has remained unclear. Our study sheds new light on the solu…
Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings are found by two independent rigorous procedures. The first method uses a unitary transformation to establish a mapping correspondence with an effective classical spin model, while the second method relies on the derivation of an effective hard-core boson model by continuous unitary transformations. Both methods lead to equivalent effective Hamiltonians providing a convincing proof that the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherla…
The occurrence of quasi-long-range positional order in the ground-state of the one-dimensional repulsive Calogero-Sutherland model is studied. By mapping the exact ground-state into a one dimensional classical system of interacting particles at finite temperatures the structure function and the displacement correlation functions are calculated numerically using Monte Carlo simulation methods. These are found to exhibit quasi-long-range positional order for all values of the parameters. The exponent characterizing the algebraic decay of the displacement correlation functions with distance is es…
We address the physical mechanism responsible for the emergence of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model. By using a hierarchical mean-field approach we demonstrate that a plateau is stabilized in a certain {\it spin pattern}, satisfying {\it local} commensurability conditions derived from our formalism. Our results provide evidence in favor of a robust local physics nature of the plateaux states, and are in agreement with recent NMR experiments on $\scbo$.
Motivated by the on-going investigation of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under pressure, we study a variant of the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland (SS) spin-1/2 model with two types of dimers. Combined with the frustration of the SS model, this modification induces, in a large parameter range, a dimensional reduction at low energies, with nearly decoupled effective S=1 Haldane chains forming along one of the diagonals of the lattice. We also present evidence that the intermediate plaquette solid phase of the undistorted SS model remains stable in a finite region of the phase diagram.
We investigate classical Heisenberg spins on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice and under an external magnetic field. A detailed study is carried out both analytically and numerically by means of classical Monte-Carlo simulations. Magnetization pseudo-plateaux are observed around 1/3 of the saturation magnetization for a range of values of the magnetic couplings. We show that the existence of the pseudo-plateau is due to an entropic selection of a particular collinear state. A phase diagram that shows the domains of existence of those pseudo-plateaux in the $(h, T)$ plane is obtained.
We study the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice under magnetic fields, to clarify the magnetic properties of SrCu_2(BO_3)_2. Treating magnetic excitations promoted by the field as Bose particles and using strong coupling expansion, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the effective magnetic particles. Anisotropic repulsive interactions between effective particles induce `insulating' states with a stripe SDW structure at magnetization m/m_{sat}=1/3 and a checkerboard structure at 1/2, and thereby form magnetization plateaus. Supersolid phases appear around insulating…
Using the density-matrix renormalization group method for the ground state and excitations of the Shastry- Sutherland spin model, we demonstrate the existence of a narrow quantum spin liquid phase between the previously known plaquette-singlet and antiferromagnetic states. Our conclusions are based on finite-size scaling of excited level crossings and order parameters. Together with previous results on candidate models for deconfined quantum criticality and spin liquid phases, our results point to a unified quantum phase diagram where the deconfined quantum-critical point separates a line of f…
We investigate the minus-sign problem that afflicts quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of frustrated quantum spin systems, focusing on spin S=1/2, two spatial dimensions, and the extended Shastry-Sutherland model. We show that formulating the Hamiltonian in the diagonal dimer basis leads to a sign problem that becomes negligible at low temperatures for small and intermediate values of the ratio of the inter- and intradimer couplings. This is a consequence of the fact that the product state of dimer singlets is the exact ground state both of the extended Shastry-Sutherland model and of a cor…
We construct two different Calogero-Sutherland type models with only two-body interactions in arbitrary dimensions. We obtain some exact wave functions, including the ground states, of these two models for arbitrary number of spinless nonrelativistic particles.
An exact analytical solution of the ground state problem of the isotropic classical Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in external magnetic field $H$ is found for arbitrary ratio of diagonal to edge exchange constants $J_2/J_1$. The phase diagram of this model in the ($J_2/J_1, H/J_1$) plane is presented. It includes spin-flop, spin-flip and umbrella phases. The magnetization curves are found to be linear until saturation. It is shown numerically that the inclusion of the easy-axis anisotropy into the model leads to the appearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau, corresponding…
Spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice is considered within the many-body perturbation theory developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the Heisenberg intradimer and Ising interdimer interactions. The former model is widely used for a description of magnetic properties of the layered compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, which exhibits a series of fractional magnetization plateaux at sufficiently low temperatures. Using the novel type of many-body perturbation theory we have found the effective model of interacting triplet excitations with the extende…
We apply a recently developed stochastic method to the Shastry-Sutherland model on 4x4 and 8x8 lattices. This method, which we call the Stochastic State Selection Method here, enables us to evaluate expectation values of powers of the Hamiltonian with very limited number of states. In this paper we first apply it to the 4x4 Shastry-Sutherland system, where one can easily obtain the exact ground state, in order to demonstrate that the method works well for this frustrated system. We numerically show that errors of the evaluations depend much on representations of the states and that the restruc…
A complete and exact solution of the ground-state problem for the Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in the applied magnetic field is found. The magnetization plateau at the one third of the saturation value is shown to be the only possible fractional plateau in this model. However, stripe magnetic structures with magnetization 1/2 and $1/n$ ($n > 3$), observed in the rare-earth tetraborides RB$_4$, occur at the boundaries of the three-dimensional regions of the ground-state phase diagram. These structures give rise to new magnetization plateaus if interactions of longer ranges are …
We characterize the field-induced magnetic phases of SrCu2(BO3)2, a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice, using specific heat in magnetic fields up to 33 T. We find that the spin gap persists above the expected critical field Hc = Delta/g*mu_B of 21 T despite the appearance of magnetic moment in the ground state. At the magnetization plateau at 1/8 of the saturation, the Sz = +1 triplets that carry the magnetization of the ground state are observed to form a two-dimensional spin gas of massive bosons. A spin gas consisting of the same…
Frustration represents an essential feature in the behavior of magnetic materials when constraints on the microscopic Hamiltonian cannot be satisfied simultaneously. This gives rise to exotic phases of matter including spin liquids, spin ices, and stripe phases. Here we demonstrate an approach to understanding the microscopic effects of frustration by computing the phases of a 468-spin Shastry-Sutherland Ising Hamiltonian using a quantum annealer. Our approach uses mean-field boundary conditions to mitigate effects of finite size and defects alongside an iterative quantum annealing protocol to…
We study a possible deconfined quantum phase transition in a realistic model of a two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland quantum magnet, using both numerical and field theoretic techniques. Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method, we verify the existence of an intermediate plaquette valence bond solid (pVBS) order, with two fold degeneracy, between the dimer and Néel ordered phases. We argue that the quantum phase transition between the Néel and pVBS orders may be described by a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) with an emergent O(4) symmetry. By analyzing the…
The U(1) Calogero Sutherland Model (CSM) with anti-periodic boundary condition is studied. The Hamiltonian is reduced to a convenient form by similarity transformation. The matrix representation of the Hamiltonian acting on a partially ordered state space is obtained in an upper triangular form. Consequently the diagonal elements become the energy eigenvalues.
The Shastry-Sutherland model --- the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice accompanied by orthogonal dimerized interactions --- is studied by the numerical-diagonalization method. Large-scale calculations provide results for larger clusters that have not been reported yet. The present study successfully captures the phase boundary between the dimer and plaquette-singlet phases and clarifies that the spin gap increases once when the interaction forming the square lattice is increased from the boundary. Our calculations strongly suggest that in addition to the edge of the dime…
The U(1) Calogero Sutherland Model with anti-periodic boundary condition is studied. The Hamiltonian is reduced to a convenient form by similarity transformation. The matrix representation of the Hamiltonian acting on a partially ordered state space is obtained in an upper triangular form. Consequently the diagonal elements become the energy eigenvalues. The eigenstates are constructed using Young diagram and represented in terms of Jack symmetric polynomials. The eigenstates so obtained are orthonormalized.
We show that, in any conformal field theory, the weights of all bulk primary fields that couple to N phi_{2,1} fields on the boundary are given by the spectrum of an N-particle Calogero-Sutherland model. The corresponding correlation function is simply related to the N-particle wave function. Examples are discussed for the minimal models and for the non-unitary O(n) model.
We investigate a quantum many-body system with particles moving on a circle and subject to two-body and three-body potentials. In this new class of models, that extrapolates from the celebrated Calogero-Sutherland model and a system with interactions among nearest and next-to-nearest neighbors, the interactions can be tuned as a function of range. We determine the exact ground state energy and wavefunction and obtain a part of the excitation spectrum.
We investigate the entanglement entropy between two subsets of particles in the ground state of the Calogero-Sutherland model. By using the duality relations of the Jack symmetric polynomials, we obtain exact expressions for both the reduced density matrix and the entanglement entropy in the limit of an infinite number of particles traced out. From these results, we obtain an upper bound value of the entanglement entropy. This upper bound has a clear interpretation in terms of fractional exclusion statistics.
