This is the first of a series of papers about \emph{quantization} in the context of \emph{derived algebraic geometry}. In this first part, we introduce the notion of \emph{$n$-shifted symplectic structures}, a generalization of the notion of symplectic structures on smooth varieties and schemes, meaningful in the setting of derived Artin n-stacks. We prove that classifying stacks of reductive groups, as well as the derived stack of perfect complexes, carry canonical 2-shifted symplectic structures. Our main existence theorem states that for any derived Artin stack $F$ equipped with an $n$-shifted symplectic structure, the derived mapping stack $\textbf{Map}(X,F)$ is equipped with a canonical $(n-d)$-shifted symplectic structure as soon a $X$ satisfies a Calabi-Yau condition in dimension $d$. These two results imply the existence of many examples of derived moduli stacks equipped with $n$-shifted symplectic structures, such as the derived moduli of perfect complexes on Calabi-Yau varieties, or the derived moduli stack of perfect complexes of local systems on a compact and oriented topological manifold. We also show that Lagrangian intersections carry canonical (-1)-shifted symplectic structures.
We prove that shifted cotangent stacks carry a canonical shifted symplectic structure. We also prove that shifted conormal stacks carry a canonical Lagrangian structure. These results were believed to be true but no written proof was available in the Artin case.
For a derived stack obtained as a quotient of a derived affine scheme by a reductive group, we show that shifted symplectic structures can be characterized by the Cartan-de Rham complex. For non-reductive groups, we also show the analogous statement for Getzler's extension of the Cartan-de Rham complex. Dually, we construct a Cartan model for polyvector fields on global quotients by reductive groups, and show that shifted Poisson structures can be characterized by it.
We prove a 'Darboux theorem' for derived schemes with symplectic forms of degree $k<0$, in the sense of Pantev, Toen, Vaquie and Vezzosi arXiv:1111.3209. More precisely, we show that a derived scheme $X$ with symplectic form $ω$ of degree $k$ is locally equivalent to (Spec $A,ω'$) for Spec $A$ an affine derived scheme whose cdga $A$ has Darboux-like coordinates in which the symplectic form $ω'$ is standard, and the differential in $A$ is given by Poisson bracket with a Hamiltonian function $H$ in $A$ of degree $k+1$. When $k=-1$, this implies that a $-1$-shifted symplectic derived scheme $(X,ω…
We examine shifted symplectic and Poisson structures on spaces of framed maps. We prove some results about shifted Poisson structures analogous to those in existing ones about symplectic structures. Then, we consider the space Map(X,D,Y) of maps from X to Y framed along a divisor D. We give conditions under which this space has a shifted symplectic or Poisson structure. Classical examples of symplectic and Poisson structures are provided with this theorem.
We show that on a derived Artin N-stack, there is a canonical equivalence between the spaces of n-shifted symplectic structures and non-degenerate n-shifted Poisson structures.
Pantev, Toen, Vaquié and Vezzosi arXiv:1111.3209 defined $k$-shifted symplectic derived schemes and stacks ${\bf X}$ for $k\in\mathbb Z$, and Lagrangians ${\bf f}:{\bf L}\to{\bf X}$ in them. They have important applications to Calabi-Yau geometry and quantization. Bussi, Brav and Joyce arXiv:1305.6302 proved a 'Darboux Theorem' giving explicit Zariski or étale local models for $k$-shifted symplectic derived schemes ${\bf X}$ for $k<0$ presenting them as twisted shifted cotangent bundles. We prove a 'Lagrangian Neighbourhood Theorem' giving explicit Zariski or etale local models for Lagrangians…
A theory of dg schemes is developed so that it becomes a homotopy site, and the corresponding infinity category of stacks is equivalent to the infinity category of stacks, as constructed by Toen and Vezzosi, on the site of dg algebras whose cohomologies have finitely many generators in each degree. Stacks represented by dg schemes are shown to be derived schemes under this correspondence.
We introduce and study the derived moduli stack $\mathrm{Symp}(X,n)$ of $n$-shifted symplectic structures on a given derived stack $X$, as introduced by [PTVV] (IHES Vol. 117, 2013). In particular, under reasonable assumptions on $X$, we prove that $\mathrm{Symp}(X, n)$ carries a canonical shifted quadratic form. This generalizes a classical result of Fricke and Habermann, which was established in the $C^{\infty}$-setting, to the broader context of derived algebraic geometry, thus proving a conjecture stated by Vezzosi.
Shifted symplectic Lie and $L_\infty$ algebroids model formal neighbourhoods of manifolds in shifted symplectic stacks, and serve as target spaces for twisted variants of classical AKSZ topological field theory. In this paper, we classify zero-, one- and two-shifted symplectic algebroids and their higher gauge symmetries, in terms of classical geometric "higher structures", such as Courant algebroids twisted by $Ω^2$-gerbes. As applications, we produce new examples of twisted Courant algebroids from codimension-two cycles, and we give symplectic interpretations for several well known features …
We give a new way to produce examples of Lagrangians in shifted symplectic derived stacks, based on multiple intersections. Specifically, we show that an m-fold fiber product of Lagrangians in a shifted symplectic derived stack its itself Lagrangian in a certain cyclic product of pairwise homotopy fiber products of the Lagrangians.
Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong defined Hecke insertion to formulate a combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_π$ indexed by permutations in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$ indexed by partitions. Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced a shifted analogue of Hecke insertion whose natural domain is the set of maximal chains in a weak order on orbit closures of the orthogonal group acting on the complete flag variety. We construct a generalization of shifted Hecke insertion for maximal chains in an analogous weak order on orbit closu…
We formulate a notion of $E_{-1}$ quantisation of $(-2)$-shifted Poisson structures on derived algebraic stacks, depending on a flat right connection on the structure sheaf, as solutions of a quantum master equation. We then parametrise $E_{-1}$ quantisations of $(-2)$-shifted symplectic structures by constructing a map to power series in de Rham cohomology. For derived schemes, we show that these quantisations give rise to classes in Borel--Moore homology, and for a large class of examples we show that the classes are closely related to Borisov--Joyce invariants.
We introduce geometric quantization in the setting of shifted symplectic structures. We define Lagrangian fibrations and prequantizations of shifted symplectic stacks and their geometric quantization. In addition, we study many examples including symplectic groupoids, Hamiltonian spaces and moduli spaces of flat connections. In the case of Hamiltonian spaces we prove a derived analog of the "quantization commutes with reduction" principle.
A categorical formalism is introduced for studying various features of the symplectic geometry of Lefschetz fibrations and the algebraic geometry of Tyurin degenerations. This approach is informed by homological mirror symmetry, derived noncommutative geometry, and the theory of Fukaya categories with coefficients in a perverse Schober. The main technical results include (i) a comparison between the notion of relative Calabi-Yau structures and a certain refinement of the notion of a spherical functor, (ii) a local-to-global gluing principle for constructing Calabi-Yau structures, and (iii) the…
We formulate a notion of $E_0$ quantisation of $(-1)$-Poisson structures on derived Artin $N$-stacks, and construct a map from $E_0$ quantisations of $(-1)$-shifted symplectic structures to power series in de Rham cohomology. For a square root of the dualising line bundle, this gives an equivalence between even power series and self-dual quantisations. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation of any such square root, which localises to recover the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles on derived DM stacks, thus giving a form of derived categorification of Donaldson--Thomas invariants.
In this article, we construct a $2$-category of Lagrangians in a fixed shifted symplectic derived stack S. The objects and morphisms are all given by Lagrangians living on various fiber products. A special case of this gives a $2$-category of $n$-shifted symplectic derived stacks $Symp^n$. This is a $2$-category version of Weinstein's symplectic category in the setting of derived symplectic geometry. We introduce another $2$-category $Symp^{or}$ of $0$-shifted symplectic derived stacks where the objects and morphisms in $Symp^0$ are enhanced with orientation data. Using this, we define a parti…
This is the fifth in a series arXiv:1304.4508, arXiv:1305,6302, arXiv:1211.3259, arXiv:1305.6428 on the '$k$-shifted symplectic derived algebraic geometry' of Pantev, Toen, Vaquie and Vezzosi, arXiv:1111.3209. This paper extends the previous three from (derived) schemes to (derived) Artin stacks. We prove four main results: (a) If $(X,ω)$ is a $k$-shifted symplectic derived Artin stack for $k<0$ in the sense of arXiv:1111.3209, then near each $x\in X$ we can find a 'minimal' smooth atlas $φ:U\to X$ with $U$ an affine derived scheme, such that $(U,φ^*(ω))$ may be written explicitly in coordinat…
We give a local model for d-shifted symplectic dg-schemes, or Deligne-Mumford dg-stacks [PTVV]. Locally any such is a product of a "twisted shifted cotangent bundle", where the twist is given by an element df, with $f \in H^{1-d}(\Cal O)$, and a quadratic bundle in middle degree. The latter only occurs if d = 4r+2.
Motivated by the cohomological construction for the BV formalism from physics, this thesis asks how to perform the intersections and quotients appearing in the BV construction. This leads to the study of the derived symplectic reduction and the extension of these classical notions for group action and infinitesimal actions of Lie algebroids. In this context, we generalize the classical notion of moment maps for global and infinitesimal actions. We then study examples of such moment maps and their derived reductions and produce new shifted examples through a procedure of derived Lagrangian inte…
Let $f:U\to{\mathbb A}^1$ be a regular function on a smooth scheme $U$ over a field $\mathbb K$. Pantev, Toen, Vaquie and Vezzosi (arXiv:1111.3209, arXiv:1109.5213) define the "derived critical locus" Crit$(f)$, an example of a new class of spaces in derived algebraic geometry, which they call "$-1$-shifted symplectic derived schemes". They show that intersections of algebraic Lagrangians in a smooth symplectic $\mathbb K$-scheme, and stable moduli schemes of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold over $\mathbb K$, are also $-1$-shifted symplectic derived schemes. Thus, their theory may have …
This paper is the sequel to [PTVV] (IHES Vol. 117, 2013). We develop a general and flexible context for differential calculus in derived geometry, including the de Rham algebra and polyvector fields. We then introduce the formalism of formal derived stacks and prove formal localization and gluing results. These allow us to define shifted Poisson structures on general derived Artin stacks, and prove that the non-degenerate Poisson structures correspond exactly to shifted symplectic forms. Shifted deformation quantization for a derived Artin stack endowed with a shifted Poisson structure is disc…
We show that a Calabi-Yau structure of dimension $d$ on a smooth dg category $C$ induces a symplectic form of degree $2-d$ on the moduli space of objects $M_{C}$. We show moreover that a relative Calabi-Yau structure on a dg functor $C \to D$ compatible with the absolute Calabi-Yau structure on $C$ induces a Lagrangian structure on the corresponding map of moduli $M_{D} \to M_{C}$.
In this paper we classify symplectic leaves of the regular part of the projectivization of the space of meromorphic endomorphisms of a stable vector bundle on an elliptic curve, using the study of shifted Poisson structures on the moduli of complexes from our previous work \cite{HP17}. This Poisson ind-scheme is closely related to the ind Poisson-Lie group associated to Belavin's elliptic $r$-matrix, studied by Sklyanin, Cherednik and Reyman and Semenov-Tian-Shansky. Our result leads to a classification of symplectic leaves on the regular part of meromorphic matrix algebras over an elliptic cu…
Classical limits of quantum groups give rise to multiplicative Poisson structures such as Poisson-Lie and quasi-Poisson structures. We relate them to the notion of a shifted Poisson structure which gives a conceptual framework for understanding classical (dynamical) $r$-matrices, quasi-Poisson groupoids and so on. We also propose a notion of a symplectic realization of shifted Poisson structures and show that Manin pairs and Manin triples give examples of such.
This is a report on recent progress concerning the interactions between derived algebraic geometry and deformation quantization. We present the notion of derived algebraic stacks, of shifted symplectic and Poisson structures, as well as the construction of deformation quantization of shifted Poisson structures. As an application we propose a general construction of the quantization of the moduli space of $G$-bundles on an oriented space of arbitrary dimension.
We extend a recent result of Pantev-Toen-Vaquie-Vezzosi, who constructed shifted symplectic structures on derived mapping stacks having a Calabi-Yau source and a shifted symplectic target. Their construction gives a clear conceptual framework for the so-called AKSZ formalism. We extend the PTVV construction to derived mapping stacks with boundary conditions, which is required in most applications to quantum field theories (see e.g. the work of Cattaneo-Felder on the Poisson sigma model, and the recent work of Cattaneo-Mnev-Reshetikhin). We provide many examples of Lagrangian and symplectic str…
We introduce a formalism for derived moduli functors on differential graded associative algebras, which leads to non-commutative enhancements of derived moduli stacks and naturally gives rise to structures such as Hall algebras. Descent arguments are not available in the non-commutative context, so we establish new methods for constructing various kinds of atlases. The formalism permits the development of the theory of shifted bi-symplectic and shifted double Poisson structures in the companion paper.
We establish a system of formal noncommutative calculus for differential forms and polyvector fields, which forms the foundations for the study of pre-Calabi-Yau categories. Using an explicit trace map, we show that any $n$-Calabi-Yau structure on a non-positively graded dg algebra $A$ induces a $(2-n)$-shifted symplectic structure on its derived moduli stack of representations; while any $n$-pre-Calabi-Yau structure on $A$ induces a $(2-n)$-shifted Poisson structure on this derived moduli stack.
We prove that every $0$-shifted symplectic structure on a derived Artin $n$-stack admits a curved $A_{\infty}$ deformation quantisation. The classical method of quantising smooth varieties via quantisations of affine space does not apply in this setting, so we develop a new approach. We construct a map from DQ algebroid quantisations of unshifted symplectic structures on a derived Artin $n$-stack to power series in de Rham cohomology, depending only on a choice of Drinfeld associator. This gives an equivalence between even power series and certain involutive quantisations, which yield anti-inv…
In this paper we study the moduli stack of complexes of vector bundles (with chain isomorphisms) over a smooth projective variety $X$ via derived algebraic geometry. We prove that if $X$ is a Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$ then this moduli stack has a $(1-d)$-shifted Poisson structure. In the case $d=1$, we construct a natural foliation of the moduli stack by $0$-shifted symplectic substacks. We show that our construction recovers various known Poisson structures associated to complex elliptic curves, including the Poisson structure on Hilbert scheme of points on elliptic quantum projecti…
This paper puts the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian reduction in the framework of shifted symplectic structures developed by Pantev, Toën, Vaquié and Vezzosi. We compute the symplectic structures on mapping stacks and show how the AKSZ topological field theory defined by Calaque allows one to neatly package the constructions used in quasi-Hamiltonian reduction. Finally, we explain how a prequantization of character stacks can be obtained purely locally.
Let $({\bf X},ω_{\bf X}^*)$ be a separated, $-2$-shifted symplectic derived $\mathbb C$-scheme, in the sense of Pantev, Toen, Vezzosi and Vaquie arXiv:1111.3209, of complex virtual dimension ${\rm vdim}_{\mathbb C}{\bf X}=n\in\mathbb Z$, and $X_{\rm an}$ the underlying complex analytic topological space. We prove that $X_{\rm an}$ can be given the structure of a derived smooth manifold ${\bf X}_{\rm dm}$, of real virtual dimension ${\rm vdim}_{\mathbb R}{\bf X}_{\rm dm}=n$. This ${\bf X}_{\rm dm}$ is not canonical, but is independent of choices up to bordisms fixing the underlying topological …
