Chapter 4 of my book [1] is dedicated to Lie-Bäcklund group analysis of various types of differential equations. The Russian edition of this book had an Addendum (pages 262-266) containing a summary of new results (obtained by the end of 1982) on classification of evolution equations of the second and third order possessing Lie-Bäcklund symmetries. The \textit{Addendum} was not included in the English translation of the book by technical reasons. I present here the missing translation. In order to make the text self-contained, I have added in the translation the equations from the main body of the book used in the Addendum.
We propose a modification of the AKNS hierarchy that includes the "modified" Pohlmeyer-Lund-Regge (mPLR) equation. Similarity reductions of this hierarchy give the second, third, and fourth Painlevé equations. Especially, we present a new Lax representation and a complete description of the symmetry of the third Painlevé equation through the similarity reduction. We also show the relation between the tau-function of the mPLR hierarchy and Painlevé equations.
We unearth the interconnection between various analytical methods which are widely used in the current literature to identify integrable nonlinear dynamical systems described by third-order nonlinear ordinary differentiable equations (ODEs). We establish an important interconnection between extended Prelle-Singer procedure and λ-symmetries approach applicable to third-order ODEs to bring out the various linkages associated with these different techniques. By establishing this interconnection we demonstrate that given any one of the quantities as a starting point in the family consisting of Jac…
Preliminary results about Lie and potential symmetries of a class of Korteweg-de Vries type equations are presented. In order to prove existence of potential symmetries three different systems of so called determining equations are analysed. It is shown that two systems lead only to Lie symmetries while the third system produces potential symmetries provided the equation in question has an appropriate structure
In a quantum world, reference frames are ultimately quantum systems too -- but what does it mean to "jump into the perspective of a quantum particle"? In this work, we show that quantum reference frame (QRF) transformations appear naturally as symmetries of simple physical systems. This allows us to rederive and generalize known QRF transformations within an alternative, operationally transparent framework, and to shed new light on their structure and interpretation. We give an explicit description of the observables that are measurable by agents constrained by such quantum symmetries, and app…
Within the framework of inverse Lie problem, we give some non-trivial examples of coupled Lie remarkable equations, \textit{i.e.}, classes of differential equations that are in correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we determine hierarchies of second order partial differential equations uniquely characterized by affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, and a system of two third order partial differential equations in two independent variables uniquely determined by the Lie algebra of projective transformations of $\mathbb{R}^4$.
Symmetry preserving difference schemes approximating second and third order ordinary differential equations are presented. They have the same three or four-dimensional symmetry groups as the original differential equations. The new difference schemes are tested as numerical methods. The obtained numerical solutions are shown to be much more accurate than those obtained by standard methods without an increase in cost. For an example involving a solution with a singularity in the integration region the symmetry preserving scheme, contrary to standard ones, provides solutions valid beyond the sin…
Octupolar tensors are third order, completely symmetric and traceless tensors. Whereas in 2D an octupolar tensor has the same symmetries as an equilateral triangle and can ultimately be identified with a vector in the plane, the symmetries that it enjoys in 3D are quite different, and only exceptionally reduce to those of a regular tetrahedron. By use of the octupolar potential that is, the cubic form associated on the unit sphere with an octupolar tensor, we shall classify all inequivalent octupolar symmetries. This is a mathematical study which also reviews and incorporates some previous, le…
Symmetries of variational problems are considered as symmetries of vector bundle valued exterior differential systems. This approach is then applied to third order ordinary variational equations of motion of the semi-classical spinning particle.
This work represents a PhD thesis concerning three main topics. The first one deals with the study and applications of Lie systems with compatible geometric structures, e.g. symplectic, Poisson, Dirac, Jacobi, among others. Many new Lie systems admitting Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebras of Hamiltonian vector fields relative to the above mentioned geometric structures are analyzed and their importance is illustrated by their appearances in physical, biological and mathematical models. The second part details the study of Lie symmetries and reductions of relevant hierarchies of differential equati…
The examples are considered of integrable hyperbolic equations of third order with two independent variables. In particular, an equation is found which admits as evolutionary symmetries the Krichever--Novikov equation and the modified Landau--Lifshitz system. The problem of choice of dynamical variables for the hyperbolic equations is discussed.
Quasisymmetry builds a third invariant for charged-particle motion besides energy and magnetic moment. We address quasisymmetry at the level of approximate symmetries of first-order guiding-centre motion. We find that the conditions to leading order are the same as for exact quasisymmetry if one insists that the symmetry is purely spatial. We also generalise to allow for approximate phase-space symmetries, and derive weaker conditions. The latter recover "weak quasisymmetry" as a subcase, thus we prove it is spatial only to leading order, but also that it implies the existence of a wider class…
A demonstration of how the point symmetries of the Chazy Equation become nonlocal symmetries for the reduced equation is discussed. Moreover we construct an equivalent third-order differential equation which is related to the Chazy Equation under a generalized transformation, and find the point symmetries of the Chazy Equation are generalized symmetries for the new equation. With the use of singularity analysis and a simple coordinate transformation we construct a solution for the Chazy Equation which is given by a Right Painlevé Series. The singularity analysis is applied to the new third-ord…
We perform a detailed classification of the Lie point symmetries and of the resulting similarity transformations for the Generalized Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli equations. The latter equations for a system of two nonlinear 1+2 partial differential equations of second- and third-order. The nonlinear equations depend of two parameters, namely $n$ and $m$, from where we find that for various values of these two parameters the resulting systems admit different number of Lie point symmetries. For every case, we present the complete analysis for the admitted Lie group as also we determine all the possible…
The 14 moments model for dense gases, introduced in the last years by Ruggeri, Sugiyama and collaborators, is here considered. They have found the closure of the balance equations up to second order with respect to equilibrium; subsequently, Carrisi has found the closure up to whatever order with respect to equilibrium, but for a more constrained system where more symmetry conditions are imposed. Here the closure is obtained up to whatever order and without imposing the supplementary conditions. It comes out that the first non symmetric parts appear only at third order with respect to equilibr…
The solution of a class of third order ordinary differential equations possessing two parameter Lie symmetry group is obtained by group theoretic means. It is shown that reduction to quadratures is possible according to two scenarios: 1) if upon first reduction of order the obtained second order ordinary differential equation besides the inherited point symmetry acquires at least one more new point symmetry (possibly a hidden symmetry of Type II). 2) First, reduction paths of the fourth order differential equations with four parameter symmetry group leading to the first order equation possessi…
We study the similarity solutions and we determine the conservation laws of the various forms of beam equation, such as, Euler-Bernoulli, Rayleigh and Timoshenko-Prescott. The travelling-wave reduction leads to solvable fourth-order odes for all the forms. In addition, the reduction based on the scaling symmetry for the Euler-Bernoulli form leads to certain odes for which there exists zero symmetries. Therefore, we conduct the singularity analysis to ascertain the integrability. We study two reduced odes of order second and third. The reduced second-order ode is a perturbed form of Painlevé-In…
A computational classification of contact symmetries and higher-order local symmetries that do not commute with $t,x$, as well as local conserved densities that are not invariant under $t,x$ is carried out for a generalized version of the Krichever-Novikov equation. Several new results are obtained. First, the Krichever-Novikov equation is explicitly shown to have a local conserved density that contains $t,x$. Second, apart from the dilational point symmetries known for special cases of the Krichever-Novikov equation and its generalized version, no other local symmetries with low differential …
We investigate the symmetry properties of a pair of Ermakov equations. The system is superintegrable and yet possesses only three Lie point symmetries with the algebra sl(2,R). The number of point symmetries is insufficient and the algebra unsuitable for the complete specification of the system. We use the method of reduction of order to reduce the nonlinear fourth-order system to a third-order system comprising a linear second-order equation and a conservation law. We obtain the representation of the complete symmetry group from this system. Four of the required symmetries are nonlocal and th…
We found a new symplectic structure and a recursion operator for the Sasa--Satsuma equation widely used in nonlinear optics, $$ p_t=p_{xxx}+6 p q p_x+3 p (p q)_x,\quad q_t=q_{xxx}+6 p q q_x+3 q (p q)_x, $$ along with an integro-differential substitution linking this system to a third-order generalized symmetry of the complex sine-Gordon II system $$ u_{xy}=\frac{v u_x u_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k u,\qquad v_{xy}=\frac{u v_x v_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k v, $$ where $c$ and $k$ are arbitrary constants. Combining these two results yields a highly nonlocal hereditary recursion …
Nonlinear generalizations of integrable equations in one dimension, such as the KdV and Boussinesq equations with $p$-power nonlinearities, arise in many physical applications and are interesting in analysis due to critical behaviour. This paper studies analogous nonlinear $p$-power generalizations of the integrable KP equation and the Boussinesq equation in two dimensions. Several results are obtained. First, for all $p\neq 0$, a Hamiltonian formulation of both generalized equations is given. Second, all Lie symmetries are derived, including any that exist for special powers $p\neq0$. Third, …
Conserved currents associated with the time translation and axial symmetries of the Kerr spacetime and with scaling symmetry are constructed for the Teukolsky Master Equation (TME). Three partly different approaches are taken, of which the third one applies only to the spacetime symmetries. The results yielded by the three approaches, which correspond to three variants of Noether's theorem, are essentially the same, nevertheless. The construction includes the embedding of the TME into a larger system of equations, which admits a Lagrangian and turns out to consist of two TMEs with opposite spi…
The piezoelectricity law is a constitutive model that describes how mechanical andelectric fields are coupled within a material. In its linear formulation this law comprises threeconstitutive tensors of increasing order: the second order permittivity tensor S, the third orderpiezoelectricity tensor P and the fourth-order elasticity tensor C. In a first part of the paper, the symmetry classes of the piezoelectricity tensor alone are investigated. Using a new approachbased on the use of the so-called clips operations, we establish the 16 symmetry classes of thistensor and provide their associated…

The recent "honeycomb code" is a fault-tolerant quantum memory defined by a sequence of checks which implements a nontrivial automorphism of the toric code. We argue that a general framework to understand this code is to consider continuous adiabatic paths of gapped Hamiltonians and we give a conjectured description of the fundamental group and second and third homotopy groups of this space in two spatial dimensions. A single cycle of such a path can implement some automorphism of the topological order of that Hamiltonian. We construct such paths for arbitrary automorphisms of two-dimensional …
This article is the third in a series the aim of which is to use Lie group theory to obtain exact analytic solutions of Delay Ordinary Differential Systems (DODSs). Such a system consists of two equations involving one independent variable $x$ and one dependent variable $y$. As opposed to ODEs the variable $x$ figures in more than one point (we consider the case of two points, $x$ and $x_-$). The dependent variable $y$ and its derivatives figure in both $x$ and $x_-$. Two previous articles were devoted to {\it first}-order DODSs, here we concentrate on a large class of {\it second}-order ones.…
We present an algebraic formulation of the notion of integrability of dynamical systems, based on a nilpotency property of its flow: it can be explicitly described as a polynomial on its evolution parameter. Such a property is established in a purely geometric--algebraic language, in terms both of the algebra of all higher-order constants of the motion (named the nilpotent algebra of the dynamics), and of a maximal Abelian algebra of symmetries (called a Cartan subalgebra of the dynamics). It is shown that this notion of integrability amounts to the annihilator of the nilpotent algebra being c…
