We report local and non-local measurements in pin-hole dominated mesoscopic multigraphene spin-valves. Local spin-valve measurements show spurious switching behavior in resistance during magnetic field sweeping similar to the signal observed due to spin-injection into multigraphene. The switching behavior has been explained in terms of local Hall effect due to thickness irregularity of the tunnel barrier. Local Hall effect appears due to large local magnetostatic field produced at the roughness in the AlO$_x$ tunnel barrier. The effect of this local Hall effect is found to reduce as temperature is increased above 75 K. The strong local Hall effect hinders spin-injection into multigraphene resulting in no spin signal in non-local measurements.
Nanopillar spin valve devices are typically comprised of two ferromagnetic layers: a reference layer and a free layer whose magnetic orientation can be changed by both an external magnetic field and through the introduction of spin-polarized electric current. Here we report the continuous repeated switching behavior of both the reference and free layers of a perpendicular spin valve made of Co/Pd and Co/Ni multilayers that arises for sufficiently large DC currents. This periodic switching of the two layers produces an oscillating signal in the MHz regime but is only observed for one sign of th…
We present measurements of magneto-Seebeck effect on a spin valve with in-plane thermal gradient. We measured open circuit voltage and short circuit current by applying a temperature gradient across a spin valve stack, where one of the ferromagnetic layers is pinned. We found a clear hysteresis in these two quantities as a function of magnetic field. From these measurements, the magneto-Seebeck effect was found to be 0.82%.
In spin values the damping parameters of the free layer are determined non-locally by the entire magnetic configuration. In a dual spin valve structure that comprises a free layer embedded between two pinned layers, the spin pumping mechanism, in combination with the angular momentum conservation, renders the tensor-like damping parameters tunable by varying the interfacial and diffusive properties. Simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology for a macrospin model are performed with the tensor-like damping and the relaxation time of the free layer magnetization is found to b…
Using simultaneous magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and transport measurements of a graphene spin valve, we correlate the non-local spin signal with the magnetization of the device electrodes. The imaged magnetization states corroborate the influence of each electrode within a one-dimensional spin transport model and provide evidence linking domain wall pinning to additional features in the transport signal.
We present spin transport studies on bi- and trilayer graphene non-local spin-valves which have been fabricated by a bottom-up fabrication method. By this technique, spin injection electrodes are first deposited onto Si$^{++}$/SiO$_2$ substrates with subsequent mechanical transfer of a graphene/hBN heterostructure. We showed previously that this technique allows for nanosecond spin lifetimes at room temperature combined with carrier mobilities which exceed 20,000 cm$^2$/(Vs). Despite strongly enhanced spin and charge transport properties, the MgO injection barriers in these devices exhibit con…
Magnetization dynamic response of coupled and uncoupled spin valves with structure NiFe(20 nm)/Cu(t_Cu)/NiFe(20 nm)/IrMn(10nm) were probed using broadband ferromagnetic resonance absorption measurements. By varying the Cu thickness t_Cu we were able to tailor the coupling intensity between the free and pinned layers. Broadband spectra show two resonant modes for each measured field. It is noticed that the coupling among NiFe layers modifies the amplitude of the absorption peaks and, moreover, the dispersion relations of the modes, which are distorted specially at the anti-parallel state. A num…
We report time-resolved measurements of current-induced reversal of a free magnetic layer in Py/Cu/Py elliptical nanopillars at temperatures T = 4.2 K to 160 K. Comparison of the data to Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert macrospin simulations of the free layer switching yields numerical values for the spin torque and the Gilbert damping parameters as functions of T. The damping is strongly T-dependent, which we attribute to the antiferromagnetic pinning behavior of a thin permalloy oxide layer around the perimeter of the free layer. This adventitious antiferromagnetic pinning layer can have a major impa…
Nanoscale multifunctional perpendicular organic spin valves have been fabricated. The devices based on an La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/Alq$_3$/Co trilayer show resistive switching of up to 4-5 orders of magnitude and magnetoresistance as high as -70% the latter even changing sign when voltage pulses are applied. This combination of phenomena is typically observed in multiferroic tunnel junctions where it is attributed to magnetoelectric coupling between a ferromagnet and a ferroelectric material. Modeling indicates that here the switching originates from a modification of the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3…
A fabrication process for vertical organic spin-valve devices has been developed which offers the possibility to achieve active device areas of less than 500x500 nm^2 and is flexible in terms of material choice for the active layers. Characterization of the resulting devices shows a large magnetoresistance of sometimes more than 100%, however with equally large variation from device to device. Comparison with large-area spin-valves indicates that the magnetoresistance of both, large and small devices most likely originates from tunneling through pinholes and tunneling magnetoresistance.
Active manipulation of spin waves is essential for the development of magnon-based technologies. Here, we demonstrate programmable spin-wave filtering by resetting the spin structure of a pinned 90$^\circ$ Néel domain wall in a continuous CoFeB film with abrupt rotations of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Using phase-resolved micro-focused Brillouin light scattering and micromagnetic simulations, we show that broad 90$^\circ$ head-to-head or tail-to-tail magnetic domain walls are transparent to spin waves over a broad frequency range. In contrast, magnetic switching to a 90$^\circ$ head-to-tail …
Modulations of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) on current-driven dynamics of 180$^{\circ}$ domain walls (180DWs) in long and narrow spin valves (LNSVs) with heavy-metal caplayers are systematically investigated. We focus on LNSVs with in-plane magnetic anisotropy in their free layers. For planar-transverse polarizers (pinned layers of LNSVs), the Walker breakdown can be postponed considerably (practical infinity) by iDMI. More interestingly, the originally unstable traveling mode is also stabilized by iDMI with high saturation velocity thus serves as fast carrier of inform…
Nonlinear current-voltage characteristics and magnetoresistance of point contacts between a normal metal (N) and films of amorphous ferromagnet (F) Co40Fe40B20 of different thickness, exchange-biased by antiferromagnetic Mn80Ir20 are studied. A surface spin valve effect in the conductance of such F-N contacts is observed. The effect of exchange bias is found to be inversely proportional to the Co40Fe40B20 film thickness. This behavior as well as other magneto-transport effects we observe on single exchange-pinned ferromagnetic films are similar in nature to those found in conventional three-la…
We show spin lifetimes of 12.6 ns and spin diffusion lengths as long as 30.5 μm in single layer graphene non-local spin transport devices at room temperature. This is accomplished by the fabrication of Co/MgO-electrodes on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate and the subsequent dry transfer of a graphene-hBN-stack on top of this electrode structure where a large hBN flake is needed in order to diminish the ingress of solvents along the hBN-to-substrate interface. Interestingly, long spin lifetimes are observed despite the fact that both conductive scanning force microscopy and contact resistance measurement…
The spin transfer torque in all-metal dual spin valve, in which two antiparallelly aligned pinned ferromagnetic layers are on the two sides of a free ferromagnetic layer with two thin nonmagnetic spacers in between, is studied in the ballistic regime. It is argued that, similar to the results in the diffusion regime, the spin transfer torque is dramatically enhanced in comparison to that in a conventional spin valve although no spin accumulation exists at the magnetic-nonmagnetic interfaces. Within the Slonczewski's approach, an analytical expression of the torque on the free magnetic layer is…
Spin transport properties of graphene non-local spin valve devices are typically determined from Hanle spin precession measurements by using a simplified solution of the one-dimensional Bloch-Torrey equation which assumes infinitely long transport channels and uniform spin transport parameter. We investigate the effects of a finite graphene size and explore the influence of spatially-varying transport parameters on the measured Hanle curves by finite element simulations. We assume enhanced spin dephasing in the contact-covered graphene areas with additional Fermi level pinning and explore the …
We perform 3D micromagnetic simulations of current-driven magnetization dynamics in nanoscale exchange biased spin-valves that take account of (i) back action of spin-transfer torque on the pinned layer, (ii) non-linear damping and (iii) random thermal torques. Our simulations demonstrate that all these factors significantly impact the current-driven dynamics and lead to a better agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results. In particular, we observe that, at a non-zero temperature and a sub-critical current, the magnetization dynamics exhibits nonstationary behaviour in …
We propose theoretically a generalized memristive system based on controlled spin polarizations in the giant magnetoresistive material using a feedback loop with the classical Hall Effect. The dynamics can exhibit a memristive pinched hysteretic loop that possesses the self-crossing knot not located at the origin. Additionally, one can also observe a single-looped orbit in the device. We also provide a sufficient condition for the stability based on an estimation of the Floquet exponent. The analysis shows that the non-origin-crossing dynamics is generally permitted in a class of passive memor…
Electrical spin injection from ferromagnetic metals into graphene is hindered by the impedance mismatch between the two materials. This problem can be reduced by the introduction of a thin tunnel barrier at the interface. We present room temperature non-local spin valve measurements in cobalt/aluminum-oxide/graphene structures with an injection efficiency as high as 25%, where electrical contact is achieved through relatively transparent pinholes in the oxide. This value is further enhanced to 43% by applying a DC current bias on the injector electrodes, that causes carrier drift away from the…
In-situ, device level measurement of thermal mag-noise spectral linewidths in 60nm diameter CPP-GMR spin-valve stacks of IrMn/ref/Cu/free, with reference and free layer of similar CoFe/CoFeGe alloy, are used to simultaneously determine the intrinsic Gilbert damping for both magnetic layers. It is shown that careful alignment at a "magic-angle" between free and reference layer static equilibrium magnetization can allow direct measurement of the broadband intrinsic thermal spectra in the virtual absence of spin-torque effects which otherwise grossly distort the spectral line shapes and require l…
Using a Keldysh formalism, we study supercurrent (SC) transport in several types of diffusive ferromagnet(F)/superconductor(S) configurations. We separate out the even- and odd-frequency components and identify the relative contributions from the singlet and triplet channels. We first consider 1D Josephson structures consisting of a uniform SFFS structure and a trilayer SFFFS configuration. Our results demonstrate that for SCs flowing perpendicular to the FF interfaces, incorporating a conical texture yields the most effective way to observe the signatures of the long-ranged SC. We also consid…
Recently, it has been shown that oxide barriers in graphene-based non-local spin-valve structures can be the bottleneck for spin transport. The barriers may cause spin dephasing during or right after electrical spin injection which limit spin transport parameters such as the spin lifetime of the whole device. An important task is to evaluate the quality of the oxide barriers of both spin injection and detection contacts in a fabricated device. To address this issue, we discuss the influence of spatially inhomogeneous oxide barriers and especially conducting pinholes within the barrier on the b…
We discuss the current induced magnetization dynamics of spin valves F0|N|SyF where the free layer is a synthetic ferrimagnet SyF made of two ferromagnetic layers F1 and F2 coupled by RKKY exchange coupling. In the interesting situation where the magnetic moment of the outer layer F2 dominates the magnetization of the ferrimagnet, we find that the sign of the effective spin torque exerted on the free middle layer F1 is controlled by the strength of the RKKY coupling: for weak coupling one recovers the usual situation where spin torque tends to, say, anti-align the magnetization of F1 with resp…
