We investigate the impact of uniaxial strain on atomic shifts, dipolar interactions, polarization and electric permittivity in TiO$_2$ (rutile) by using two different implementations of density functional theory. It is shown that calculations using the Vienna ab inito simulation package (VASP) and the plane-wave self-consistent field method (PWscf) yield qualitatively the same atomic relaxations and ferroelectric trends under strain. The phonon dispersion curves of unstrained and strained TiO$_2$ (rutile) obtained by employing the linear response method confirm previous calculations of the giant LO-TO splitting and the appearance of soft polar modes. A second order phase transition into a ferroelectric phase with polarization along (110) appears under expansive strain in (110) direction.
The structure and polarization of the as-yet hypothetical Ruddlesden-Popper compound Pb$_2$TiO$_4$ are investigated within density-functional theory. Zone enter phonons of the high-symmetry K$_2$NiF$_4$-type reference structure, space group $I4/mmm$, were calculated. At the theoretical ground-state lattice constants, there is one unstable infrared-active phonon. This phonon freezes in to give the $I2mm$ ferroelectric state. As a function of epitaxial strain, two additional ferroelectric phases are found, with space groups $I4mm$ and $F2mm$ at compressive and tensile strains, respectively.
The ferroelectric trends of rutile (TiO$_2$) in bulk and at the (110) surface are investigated by means of ab initio density functional theory. We discuss the underlying mechanism of the incipient ferroelectric behavior of rutile in terms of Born effective charges, which we decompose in individual contributions by means of maximally localized Wannier functions. We show that a ferroelectric phase can be stabilized for a variety of different lattice distortions which all enlarge the shortest Ti-O distance, even if the longer apical Ti-O bond is simultaneously shortened. At the (110) surface, the…
The influence of the B-site ion substitutions in (1-x)(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-xBaTiO3 system of solid solutions on the relative stability of the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases has been studied. The ions of zirconium, tin, along with (In0.5Nb0.5), (Fe0.5Nb0.5), (Al0.5V0.5) ion complexes have been used as substituting elements. An increase in the concentration of the substituting ion results in a near linear variation in the size of the crystal lattice cell. Along with the cell size variation a change in the relative stability of the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases takes place ac…
We present a semi-empirical effective Hamiltonian to capture effects of disorder associated with Ba and Sr cations occupying $A$ sites in (Ba$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)TiO$_3$ on its ferroelectric phase transition. Averaging between the parameters of first-principles effective Hamiltonians of end members BaTiO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$, we include a term with an empirical parameter to capture the local polarization and strains arising from the difference between ionic radii of Ba and Sr. Using mixed-space molecular dynamics of the effective Hamiltonian, we determine $T$-dependent ferroelectric phase transitions…
We use first principles density functional theory to investigate the softening of polar phonon modes in rutile TiO$_2$ under tensile (110)-oriented strain. We show that the system becomes unstable against a ferroelectric distortion with polarization along (110) for experimentally accessible strain values. The resulting polarization, estimated from the Born effective charges, even exceeds the bulk polarization of BaTiO$_3$. Our calculations demonstrate the different strain dependence of polar modes polarized along (110) and (001) directions, and we discuss the possibility of strain engineering …
Surfaces and interfaces of ferroelectric oxides exhibit enhanced functionality, and therefore serve as a platform for novel nano and quantum technologies. Experimental and theoretical challenges associated with examining the subtle electro-chemo-mechanical balance at metal-oxide surfaces have hindered the understanding and control of their structure and behavior. Here, we combine advanced electron-microscopy and first-principles thermodynamics methods to reveal the atomic-scale chemical and crystallographic structure of the surface of the seminal ferroelectric BaTiO3. We show that the surface …
We propose to insert TiO layers to perovskite ATiO$_{3}$ to form a superlattice and use first-principles calculations to investigate its basic properties. Our computational analysis shows that the structure, which consists of repeated ATiO_{3} and TiO layers, has strong anisotropic conductivity. The structure immediately suggests a possible control of its conductivity by ion displacements related to its intrinsic ferroelectricity. In addition, we have obtained the structural information of its low-energy phases with the aid of phonon calculation and examined their evolution with epitaxial stra…
Very recently there was a report of the discovery using piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) of a switchable ferroelectric polarization in 1.6 % tensile strained TiO2 thin film with anatase crystal structure (see N. Deepak et al. Adv. Funct. Mater. 2014, 24, 2844). The polarization disappeared only above 450 K, which was assigned as a Curie temperature, Tc. Here we have performed X-ray diffraction, second-harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared investigations of the same films. Phonon frequencies exhibit less than a 10 % shift down with the tensile strain and no anomaly near expected TC. SHG ex…
We present a density functional theory investigation of strained Ca$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$. We have determined the structure and polarization for a number of arrangements of Ca and Sr in a 2$\times$2$\times$2 supercell. The a and b lattice vectors are strained to match the lattice constants of the rotated Si(001) face. To set the context for the CSTO study, we also include simulations of the Si(001) constrained structures for CaTiO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$. Our primary findings are that all Ca$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ structures examined except one are ferroelectric, exhibiting polarizations rangin…
Epitaxial strain can be used to modify the properties of ferroelectric thin films. From the experimental viewpoint, the challenge is to fine-tune the magnitude of the strain. We illustrate how, by using a suitable combination of composition and substrate, the magnitude of the epitaxial strain can be controlled in a continuous manner. The phase diagram of PbxSr1-xTiO3 films grown epitaxially on (110)-DyScO3 is calculated using a Devonshire-Landau approach. A boundary between in-plane and out-of-plane oriented ferroelectric phases is predicted to take place at $x \approx$ 0.8. A series of PbxSr1…
Novel phenomena appear when two different oxide materials are combined together to form an interface. For example, at the interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3, two dimensional conductive states form to avoid the polar discontinuity and magnetic properties are found at such interface. In this work, we propose a new type of interface between two nonmagnetic and nonpolar oxides that could host a conductive state with magnetic properties, where it is the ferroelectric polarization discontinuity instead of the polar discontinuity that leads to the charge transfer, forming the interfacial conductive or magnet…
Using first-principle calculations, we restrained the m=1 oxyfluoride Aurivillius Bi$_2$TiO4F$_2$ to adopt three ordered key configurations, such as tetragonal $I4/mmm$ phases with fluorine anions distributed either at the octahedral apical sites or at the octahedral equatorial ones and orthorhombic $Pma2$ phase with fluorine anions distributed over both apical and equatorial sites. We explored the energetics of the metastable phases and their potential for ferroelectricity and found that the least favorable configuration is equatorial sites for fluorine and the most favorable one is the mixtu…
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
X-ray analysis of ferroelectric thin layers of Ba1/2Sr1/2TiO3 with different thickness reveals the presence of internal strain gradients across the film thickness and allows us to propose a functional form for the internal strain profile. We use this to calculate the direct influence of strain gradient, through flexoelectric coupling, on the degradation of the ferroelectric properties of thin films with decreasing thickness, in excellent agreement with the observed behaviour. This work highlights the link between strain relaxation and strain gradients in epitaxial films, and shows the pressing…
Density functional calculations are performed to study the effect of epitaxial strain on PbZrO3. We find a remarkably small energy difference between the epitaxially strained polar R3c and nonpolar Pbam structures over the full range of experimentally accessible epitaxial strains -3% < η< 4%. While ferroelectricity is favored for all compressive strains, for tensile strains the small energy difference between the nonpolar ground state and the alternative polar phase yields a robust antiferroelectric ground state. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity observed in thin fil…
2D Ferroelectric materials are promising for designing low-dimensional memory devices. Here, we explore strain tunable ferroelectric properties of group-IV monochalcogenides MX (M=Ge, Sn; X=S, Se) and their potential application in lateral field tunnel junction devices. We find that these monolayers have in-plane ferroelectricity, with their ferroelectric parameters being on par with other known 2D ferroelectric materials. Amongst SnSe, SnS, GeSe, and GeS, we find that GeS has the best ferroelectric parameters for device applications, which can be improved further by applying uniaxial tensile …
Ferroelectric hafnia is being explored for next generation electronics due to its robust ferroelectricity in nanoscale samples and its compatibility with silicon. However, its ferroelectricity is not understood. Other ferroelectrics usually lose their ferroelectricity for nanoscopic samples and thin films, and the hafnia ground state is non-polar baddeleyite. Here we study hafnia with density functional theory (DFT) under epitaxial strain, and find that strain not only stabilizes the ferroelectric phases, but also leads to unstable modes and a downhill path in energy from the high temperature …
(Ba,Ca)TiO$_3$ and Ba(Ti,Zr)O$_3$ solid solutions are the building blocks of lead-free piezoelectric materials that attract a renewed interest. We investigate the properties of these systems by means of first-principles calculations, with a focus on the lattice dynamics and the competition between different ferroelectric phases. We first analyze the four parent compounds in order to compare their properties and their different tendency towards ferroelectricity. The core of our study is systematic characterization of the binary systems (Ba,Ca)TiO$_3$ and Ba(Ti,Zr)O$_3$ within both the Virtual C…
We review the role that first-principles calculations have played in understanding the effects of substrate-imposed misfit strain on epitaxially grown perovskite ferroelectric films. We do so by analyzing the case of BaTiO$_3$, complementing our previous publications on this subject with unpublished data to help explain in detail how these calculations are done. We also review similar studies in the literature for other perovskite ferroelectric-film materials.
An emerging area in condensed matter physics is the use of multilayered heterostructures to enhance ferroelectricity in complex oxides. Here, we demonstrate that optically pumping carriers across the interface between thin films of a ferroelectric (FE) insulator and a ferromagnetic metal can significantly enhance the FE polarization. The photoinduced FE state remains stable at low temperatures for over one day. This occurs through screening of the internal electric field by the photoexcited carriers, leading to a larger, more stable polarization state that may be suitable for applications in a…
Titanates with the perovskite structure, including ferroelectrics (e.g., BaTiO$_3$) and ferromagnetic ones (e.g., YTiO$_3$), are important functional materials. Recent theoretical studies predicted multiferroic states in strained EuTiO$_3$ and titanate superlattices, the former of which has already been experimental confirmed. Here, a first-principles calculation is performed to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of Y half-substituted LaTiO3. Our results reveal that the magnetism of Y$_{0.5}$La$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ sensitively depends on its structural details because of…
We use first principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the effect of biaxial strain in the low-temperature structural and ferroelectric properties of [111]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. We find that [111] biaxial strain, achievable by coherent epitaxial growth along the [111] direction, induces structural distortions in SrTiO$_3$ that are not present in either bulk or [001]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Under [111] biaxial strain, SrTiO$_3$ displays ferroelectricity at tensile strain, and paraelectricity at compressive strain. We compute the phonon spectrum and macroscopic polarization of S…
We report on a thermal-expansion study of the ferroelectric phase transition in insulating Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_3$ ($x=0.009$) and its evolution upon increasing charge-carrier concentration up to $n\simeq 60 \times 10^{19}$cm$^{-3}$. Although electric polarization is screened by mobile charge carriers, we find clear signatures of the ferroelectric phase transition in the thermal-expansion coefficient $α$ of the weakly doped metallic samples. Upon increasing $n$, the transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}(n)$ and the magnitude of the anomalies in $α$ rapidly decrease up to a threshold carrier den…
Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy,…
We report on the dielectric properties of epitaxial [001] and [100]-textured thin films of antiferromagnetic orthorhombic YMnO3 and their variation under compressive epitaxial strain. It is found that weakly strained YMnO3 films are ferroelectric with a polarization along c-axis switchable by 90 degrees by an external magnetic field. When reducing film thickness and increasing epitaxial strain, the ferroelectric order is progressively suppressed. Analysis of structural, dielectric and magnetic data indicates that suppression of ferroelectricity when reducing thickness is accompanied by an enla…
First principles calculations are used to investigate the effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO$_3$, with particular focus on the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to a polar instability hidden in the orthorhombic equilibrium bulk $Pbnm$ structure but found in previous first-principles studies of the ideal cubic perovskite high-symmetry reference structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the $ab$-$ePbnm$ phase, favored for compressive strains, and the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar in…
We present a thermodynamic analysis of the recently discovered nitride ferroelectric materials using the classic Landau-Devonshire approach. The electrostrictive and dielectric stiffness coefficients of Al1-xScxN with wurtzite structure (6mm) are determined using a free energy density function assuming a hexagonal parent phase (6/mmm), with the first order phase transition based on the dielectric stiffness relationships. The results of this analysis show that the strain sensitivity of the energy barrier is one order of magnitude larger than that of the spontaneous polarization in these novel w…
Using a Ginzburg--Landau--Devonshire model that includes the coupling of polarization to strain, we calculate the fluctuation spectra of ferroelectric domain walls. The influence of the strain coupling differs between 180 degree and 90 degree walls due to the different strain profiles of the two configurations. The finite speed of acoustic phonons, $v_s$, retards the response of the strain to polarization fluctuations, and the results depend on $v_s$. For $v_s \to \infty$, the strain mediates an instantaneous electrostrictive interaction, which is long-range in the 90 degree wall case. For fin…
Short period ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO)/PbTiO3 (PTO) superlattices are studied using density functional theory. Contrary to the trends in paraelectric/ferroelectric superlattices the polarization remains nearly constant for PTO concentrations below 50%. In addition, a significant decrease in the c/a ratio below the PTO values were observed. Using a superlattice effective Hamiltonian we predict an enhancement in the d33 piezoelectric coefficient peaking at ~75% PTO concentration due to the different polarization-strain coupling in PTO and BTO layers. Further analysis reveals that …
We investigate the strain dependence of the ferroelectric polarization and the structure of the ferroelectric domain walls in the layered perovskite-related barium fluorides, BaMF$_4$ (M=Mg, Zn). The unusual "geometric ferroelectricity" in these materials is driven by the softening of a single polar phonon mode consisting of rotations of the MF$_6$ octahedra accompanied by polar displacements of the Ba cations, and in contrast to conventional ferroelectrics involves minimal electronic rehybridization. We therefore anticipate a different strain dependence of the polarization, and alternative do…
The local dynamics of the lead-free relaxor $0.964\mathrm{Na}_{1/2}\mathrm{Bi}_{1/2}\mathrm{TiO}_3-0.036\mathrm{BaTiO}_3$ (NBT-3.6BT) have been investigated by a combination of quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. In a previous paper, we were able to show that the tetragonal platelets in the microstructure are crucial for understanding the dielectric properties of NBT-3.6BT [F. Pforr et al., Phys. Rev. B 94, 014105 (2016)]. To investigate their dynamics, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were carried out using $\mathrm{Na}_{1/2}\mathrm{Bi}…
Integration of ferroelectric materials into novel technological applications requires low coercive field materials, and consequently, design strategies to reduce the ferroelectric switching barriers. In this first principles study, we show that biaxial strain, which has a strong effect on the ferroelectric ground states, can also be used to tune the switching barrier of hybrid improper ferroelectric Ruddlesden-Popper oxides. We identify the region of the strain -- tolerance factor phase diagram where this intrinsic barrier is suppressed, and show that it can be explained in relation to strain …
We report on growth and ferroelectric (FE) properties of superlattices (SLs) composed of the FE BaTiO3 and the paraelectric (PE) CaTiO3. Previous theories have predicted that the polarization in (BaTiO3)n/(CaTiO3)n SLs increases as the sublayer thickness (n) increases when the same strain state is maintained. However, our BaTiO3/CaTiO3 SLs show a varying lattice-strain state and systematic reduction in polarization with increasing n while coherently-strained SLs with n=1, 2 show a FE polarization of ca. 8.5 uC/cm^2. We suggest that the strain coupling plays more important role in FE properties…
We investigate the variation of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization with epitaxial strain for BaTiO$_3$, PbTiO$_3$, LiNbO$_3$, and BiFeO$_3$ using first principles calculations. We find that while the strain dependence of the polarization is very strong in the simple perovskite systems BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ it is only weak in LiNbO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$. We show that this different behavior can be understood purely in terms of the piezoelectric and elastic constants of the unstrained bulk material, and we discuss several factors that determine the strain behavior of a certain material.
We study the temperature-dependent evolution of the octahedral tilt order in a lead-free relaxor ferroelectric and its impact on the ferroelectric properties. Using diffuse neutron scattering on a 0.964Na$_{1/2}$Bi$_{1/2}$TiO$_3$-0.036BaTiO$_3$ single crystal, we suggest a model for the temperature-dependent nanostructure of this perovskite that features chemically pinned tetragonal platelets embedded in the rhombohedral matrix, often separated by a cubic intermediate phase. Our results show a clear correlation between the squared thickness of the tetragonal platelets and the dielectric permit…
Ferroelectric BaTiO3 films with large polarization have been integrated with Si(001) by pulsed laser deposition. High quality c-oriented epitaxial films are obtained in a substrate temperature range of about 300 deg C wide. The deposition temperature critically affects the growth kinetics and thermodynamics balance, resulting on a high impact in the strain of the BaTiO3 polar axis, which can exceed 2% in films thicker than 100 nm. The ferroelectric polarization scales with the strain and therefore deposition temperature can be used as an efficient tool to tailor ferroelectric polarization. The…
Using density-functional calculations we study the structure and polarization response of tetragonal PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 in a strain regime that is previously overlooked. Different from common expectations, we find that the polarizations in all three substances saturate at large strains, demonstrating a universal phenomenon. The saturation is shown to originate from an unusual and strong electron-ion correlation that leads to cancellation between electronic and ionic polarizations. Our results shed new insight on the polarization properties, and reveal the existence of a fundamental limi…
First-principles calculations of the epitaxial-strain phase diagram of perovskite SrCoO$_{3}$ are presented. Through combination of the large spin-phonon coupling with polarization-strain coupling and coupling of the band gap to the polar distortion, both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain are seen to drive the bulk ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) phase to antiferromagnetic-insulating-ferroelectric (AFM-I-FE) phases, the latter having unusually low elastic energy. At these coupled magnetic-ferroelectric metal-insulator phase boundaries, cross responses to applied electric and magnetic fiel…
One of the exciting features of two-dimensional (2D) materials is their electronic and optical tunability through strain engineering. Previously, we found a class of 2D ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors PbX (X = S, Se, Te) with tunable spin-orbital properties. In this work, based on our previous tight-binding (TB) results, we derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian around the symmetry points that captures the effects of strain on the electronic properties of PbX. We find that strains induce gauge fields which shift the Rashba point and modify the Rashba parameter. This effect is equivalen…
Enhanced room-temperature electromechanical coupling in the lead-free ferroelectric system $(1-x)$BaZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_{3}$ - $x$Ba$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$TiO$_{3}$ (abbreviated as BZCT) at $x=0.5$ is attributed to the existence of a morphotropic phase region (MPR) containing an intermediate orthorhombic ($O$) phase between terminal rhombohedral ($R$) BZT and tetragonal ($T$) BCT phases. However, there is ambiguity regarding the morphotropic phase transition in BZCT at room temperature - while some experiments suggest a single $O$ phase within the MPR, others indicate coexistence of three polar …
The alkaline earth binary oxides adopt a simple rocksalt structure and form an important family of compounds because of their large presence in the earth's mantle and their potential use in microelectronic devices. In comparison to the class of multifunctional ferroelectric perovskite oxides, however, their practical applications remain limited and the emergence of ferroelectricity and related functional properties in simple binary oxides seems so unlikely that it was never previously considered. Here, we show using first-principles density functional calculations that ferroelectricity can be …
SrTiO$_{3}$, a quantum paraelectric, becomes a metal with a superconducting instability after removal of an extremely small number of oxygen atoms. It turns into a ferroelectric upon substitution of a tiny fraction of strontium atoms with calcium. The two orders may be accidental neighbors or intimately connected, as in the picture of quantum critical ferroelectricity. Here, we show that in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ ($0.002<x<0.009$, $δ<0.001$) the ferroelectric order coexists with dilute metallicity and its superconducting instability in a finite window of doping. At a critical carrier de…
Materials that can produce large controllable strains are widely used in shape memory devices, actuators and sensors. Great efforts have been made to improve the strain outputs of various material systems. Among them, ferroelastic transitions underpin giant reversible strains in electrically-driven ferro/piezoelectrics and thermally- or magneticallydriven shape memory alloys. However, large-strain ferroelastic switching in conventional ferroelectrics is very challenging while magnetic and thermal controls are not desirable for applications. Here, we demonstrate an unprecedentedly large shear s…
A combined experimental and computational investigation of coupling between polarization and epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectric PbZr_0.2Ti_0.8O_3 (PZT) thin films is reported. A comparison of the properties of relaxed (tetragonality c/a = 1.05) and highly-strained (c/a = 1.09) epitaxial films shows that polarization, while being amongst the highest reported for PZT or PbTiO_3 in either film or bulk forms (P_r = 82 microC/cm^2), is almost independent of the epitaxial strain. We attribute this behavior to a suppressed sensitivity of the A-site cations to epitaxial strain in these Pb-…
Zirconia and hafnia based thin films have attracted tremendous attention in the last decade due to their unexpected ferroelectric behavior at the nanoscale, which facilitates the downscaling of ferroelectric devices. The present work reports a novel ferroelectric rhombohedral phase of ZrO2 that can be achieved in thin films grown on (111)- Nb:SrTiO3 substrates by ion-beam sputtering. Structural and ferroelectric characterizations reveal that the (111)-oriented ZrO2 films are under epitaxial compressive strain and display a switchable ferroelectric polarization of about 20.2 μC/cm2 with a coerc…
The influence of depolarizing field on the magnitude and stability of a uniform polarization in ferroelectric capacitors and tunnel junctions is studied using a nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is predicted that, in heterostructures involving strained epitaxial films and metal electrodes, the homogeneous polarization state may remain stable against transformations into the paraelectric phase and into polydomain states down to the nanoscale. This result supports the possibility of depolarizing-field-related resistive switching in ferroelectric tunnel junctions with dissimilar electrodes. The …
The phase transition behaviour of PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 under (111) epitaxial strain is investigated using density-functional theory calculations. From tensile strains of +0.015 to compressive strains of -0.015, PbTiO3 undergoes phase transitions from C2 through two Cm phases and then to R3m. The total polarisation is found to be almost independent of strain. For the same range of strains BaTiO3 undergoes phase transitions from a single Cm phase, through R3m and then to R-3m. In this case the application of compressive strain inhibits and then completely suppresses the polarisation on transition t…
The direct magnetoelectric (ME) effect resulting from the polarization changes induced in a ferroelectric film by the application of a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic substrate is described using the nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is shown that the ME response strongly depends on the initial strain state of the film. The ME polarization coefficient of the heterostructures involving Terfenol-D substrates and compressively strained lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, which stabilize in the out-of-plane polarization state, is found to be comparable to that of bulk PZT/Terfenol-D laminate c…
We investigate the electrostrictive response across a ferroelectric phase transition from first-principles calculations and refute the prevailing view of constant electrostriction across the ferroelectric phase boundary. We take as a case study the epitaxial strain-induced transition from para- to feroelectricity of \ce{KTaO3}. We show that the magnitude of the electrostriction diverges with the permitivity at the transition, hence exhibiting giant responses through a calculation of both the M and Q electrostrictive tensors. We explain the origin of this giant electrostrictive response in \ce{…
