We provide a simple and straightforward procedure for defining a Virasoro algebra based on the diffeomorphisms near a null surface in a spacetime and obtain the entropy density of the null surface from its central charge. We use the off-shell Noether current corresponding to the diffeomorphism invariance of a gravitational Lagrangian $L(g_{ab},R_{abcd})$ and define the Virasoro algebra from its variation. This allows us to identify the central charge and the zero mode eigenvalue using which we obtain the entropy density of the Killing horizon. Our approach works for all Lanczos-Lovelock models and reproduces the correct Wald entropy. The entire analysis is done off-shell without using the field equations and allows us to define an entropy density for any null surface which acts as a local Rindler horizon for a particular class of observers.
We describe a simple way of obtaining horizon entropy using the approach based on the Virasoro algebra and central charge. We show that the Virasoro algebra defined by the Noether currents corresponding to the surface term of gravitational action, for the diffeomorphisms which leave the horizon structure unaltered, has a central extension that directly leads to the horizon entropy. In this approach there are no ambiguities in the calculation of the central charge. We explain why this approach is physically well motivated and could provide greater insight into the nature of horizon entropy.
A derivation of Noether current from the surface term of Einstein-Hilbert action is given. We show that the corresponding charge, calculated on the horizon, is related to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Also using the charge, the same entropy is found based on the Virasoro algebra and Cardy formula approach. In this approach, the relevant diffeomorphisms are found by imposing a very simple physical argument: diffeomorphisms keep the horizon structure invariant. This complements similar earlier results (arXiv:1204.1422) obtained from York-Gibbons-Hawking surface term. Finally we discuss the tec…
We consider the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in bigravity theory for minimal model with a condition $f_{μν} = C^{2} g_{μν}$ and evaluate the entropy for black holes. In this condition, we show that there exists the Schwarzschild solution for $C^{2} = 1$, which is unique consistent solution. We examine how the massive spin-2 field contributes and affects to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy corresponding to Einstein gravity. In order to obtain the black hole entropy, we use a recently proposed approach which use Virasoro algebra and central charge corresponding to surface ter…
Several investigations show that in a very small length scale there exists corrections to the entropy of black hole horizon. Due to fluctuations of the background metric and the external fields the action incorporates corrections. In the low energy regime, the one loop effective action in four dimensions leads to trace anomaly. We start from the Noether current corresponding to the Einstein-Hilbert plus the one loop effective action to calculate the charge for the diffeomorphisms which preserve the Killing horizon structure. Then a bracket among the charges is calculated. We show that the Four…
We treat D-dimensional black holes with Killing horizon for extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use Carlip method and impose boundary conditions on horizon what enables us to identify Virasoro algebra and evaluate its central charge and Hamiltonian eigenvalue. The Cardy formula allows then to calculate the number of states and thus provides for microscopic interpretation of entropy.
We show that the diffeomorphism anomaly together with the trace anomaly reveal a chiral Virasoro algebra near the event horizon of a black hole. This algebra is the same irrespective of whether the anomaly is covariant or consistent, thereby manifesting its universal character and the fact that only the outgoing modes are relevant near the horizon. Our analysis therefore clarifies the role of the trace anomaly in the diffeomorphism anomaly approach \cite{wilczek, isowilczek, shailesh, shailesh2, sunandan, sunandan10, rabin10} to the Hawking radiation.
Through the analysis of null symplectic structure, we derive the condition for integrable Virasoro generators on the covariant phase space of axisymmetric Killing horizons. A weak boundary condition selects a special relationship between the two temperatures for the putative CFT. When the integrability is satisfied for both future and past horizons, the two central charges are equal. At the end we discuss the physical implications.
There are certain black hole solutions in general relativity (GR) which are conformally related to the stationary solutions in GR. It is not obvious that the horizon entropy of these spacetimes is also one quarter of the area of horizon, like the stationary ones. Here I study this topic in the context of Virasoro algebra and Cardy formula. Using the fact that the conformal spacetime admits conformal Killing vector and the horizon is determined by the vanishing of the norm of it, the diffemorphisms are obtained which keep the near horizon structure invariant. The Noether charge and a bracket am…
We show that the gravitational phase space for the near-horizon region of a bifurcate, axisymmetric Killing horizon in any dimension admits a 2D conformal symmetry algebra with central charges proportional to the area. This extends the construction of [Haco et. al., JHEP 12, 098 (2018)] to generic Killing horizons appearing in solutions of Einstein's equations, and motivates a holographic description in terms of a 2D conformal field theory. The Cardy entropy in such a field theory agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the horizon, suggesting a microscopic interpretation.
I review the multi-dimensional generalizations of the Virasoro algebra, i.e. the non-central Lie algebra extensions of the algebra vect(N) of general vector fields in N dimensions, and its Fock representations. Being the Noether symmetry of background independent theories such as N-dimensional general relativity, this algebra is expected to be relevant to the quantization of gravity. To this end, more complicated modules which depend on dynamics in the form of Euler-Lagrange equations are described. These modules can apparently only be interpreted as quantum fields if spacetime has four dimens…
We investigate the asymptotic supersymmetry group of the near horizon region of the BMPV black holes, which are the rotating BPS black holes in five dimensions. When considering only bosonic fluctuations, we show that there exist consistent boundary conditions and the corresponding asymptotic symmetry group is generated by a chiral Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central charge. After turning on fermionic fluctuations with the boundary conditions, we also show that the asymptotic supersymmetry group is generated by a chiral super-Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central extension. The s…
De Sitter spacetime is known to have a cosmological horizon that enjoys thermodynamic-like properties similar to those of a black hole horizon. In this note we show that a universal argument can be given for the entropy of de Sitter spacetime in arbitrary dimensions, by generalizing a recent near horizon symmetry plus conformal field theory argument of Carlip for black hole entropy. The implications of this argument are also discussed.
Null surfaces act as one-way membranes, blocking information from those observers who do not cross them (e.g., in the black hole and the Rindler spacetimes) and these observers associate an entropy (and temperature) with the null surface. The black hole entropy can be computed from the central charge of an appropriately defined, local, Virasoro algebra on the horizon. We show that one can extend these ideas to a general class of null surfaces, all of which possess a Virasoro algebra and a central charge, leading to an entropy density (i.e., per unit area) which is just $(1/4)$. All the previou…
Starting from the surface term of gravitational action, one can construct a Virasoro algebra with central extension, with which the horizon entropy can be derived by using Cardy formula. This approach gives a new routine to calculate and interpret the horizon entropy. In this paper, we generalize this approach to a more general case, the isolated horizon, which contains non-stationary spacetimes beyond stationary ones. By imposing appropriate boundary conditions near the horizon, the full set of diffeomorphism is restricted to a subset where the corresponding Noether charges form a Virasoro al…
Using the holographic machinery built up in a previous work, we show that the hidden SL(2,R) symmetry of a scalar quantum field propagating in a Rindler spacetime admits an enlargement in terms of a unitary positive-energy representation of Virasoro algebra, with central charge c=1, defined in the Fock representation. The Virasoro algebra of operators gets a manifest geometrical meaning if referring to the holographically associated QFT on the horizon: It is nothing but a representation of the algebra of vector fields defined on the horizon equipped with a point at infinity. All that happens p…
It has recently been shown that, in the vicinity of their event horizons, black holes exhibit an infinite-dimensional symmetry. This symmetry captures relevant physical information about the black hole, and in particular about its thermodynamics. Here, we show that the same holds in a cosmological setup. More precisely, we show that around the de Sitter cosmological horizon, an infinite set of diffeomorphisms preserving a sensible set of boundary conditions emerges. These boundary conditions are similar to those considered by Price and Thorne in the context of the membrane paradigm, and permit…
We express the Noether charge entropy density of a black brane in anti-deSitter space in terms of local operators in the anti-deSitter space bulk. We find that Wald's expression for the Noether charge entropy needs to be modified away from the horizon by an additional term that vanishes on the horizon. We then determine the field theory dual of the Noether charge entropy for theories that asymptote to Einstein theory. We do so by calculating the value of the entropy density at the anti-deSitter space boundary and applying the standard rules of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We interpret the varia…
In the study of horizon thermodynamics and emergent gravity two natural expressions for energy, E= 2 TS (equipartition energy) and E=TS (Noether energy) arise which differ by a factor 2. I clarify the role of these two expressions in different contexts and show how E=TS is also closely related to the Noether charge arising from the boundary term of the Einstein-Hilbert action.
The existence of black hole horizon is considered as a boundary condition to be imposed on the fluctuating metrics. The coordinate invariant form of the condition for class of spherically symmetric metrics is formulated. The diffeomorphisms preserving this condition act in (arbitrary small) vicinity of the horizon and form the group of conformal transformations of two-dimensional space ($r-t$ sector of the total space-time). The corresponding algebra recovered at the horizon is one copy of the Virasoro algebra. For general relativity in $d$ dimensions we find an effective two-dimensional theor…
We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of Lorentzian Dyonic Taub-NUT Black Hole spacetimes. We consider two possibilities in their description: one in which their entropy is interpreted to be one quarter of the horizon area (the horizon entropy), and another in which the Misner string also contributes to the entropy (the Noether charge entropy). We find that there can be as many as three extremal black holes (or as few as zero) depending on the choice of parameters, and that the dependence of the free energy on temperature -- and the resultant phase behaviour -- depends very much on which …
We impose a certain class of boundary conditions on Killing horizon and show for Lagrangians with arbitrary curvature dependence that one can identify a Virasoro algebra with nontrivial central charge and calculable Hamiltonian eigenvalue. Entropy can then be calculated from Cardy formula.
We consider the role of the type-A trace anomaly in static black hole solutions to semiclassical Einstein equation in four dimensions. Via Wald's Noether charge formalism, we compute the contribution to the entropy coming from the anomaly induced effective action and unveil a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The corrected entropy is given by a seemingly universal formula involving the coefficient of the type-A trace anomaly, the Euler characteristic of the horizon and the value at the horizon of the solution to the uniformization problem for Q-curvature. Two instances…
A general recipe proposed elsewhere to define, via Noether theorem, the variation of energy for a natural field theory is applied to Einstein-Maxwell theory. The electromagnetic field is analysed in the geometric framework of natural bundles. Einstein-Maxwell theory turns then out to be natural rather than gauge-natural. As a consequence of this assumption a correction term \a la Regge-Teitelboim is needed to define the variation of energy, also for the pure electromagnetic part of the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian. Integrability conditions for the variational equation which defines the variatio…
We develop basic tools and matching conditions to interpolate between asymptotic and near horizon symmetries. We focus on black holes in three dimensions. In particular, we match Brown--Henneaux boundary conditions at infinity, which yields two Virasoro algebras, to Heisenberg boundary conditions at the horizon yielding two u(1) current algebras. Our construction allows to equip BTZ black holes with soft hair excitations at the horizon invisible to the asymptotic observer.
Near-horizon conformal structure of a massive Schwarzschild black hole of mass M is analyzed using a scalar field as a simple probe of the background geometry. The near-horizon dynamics is governed by an operator which is related to the Virasoro algebra and admits a one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions described by a real parameter z. When z satisfies a suitable contraint, the corresponding wavefunctions exhibit scaling behaviour in a band-like region near the horizon of the black hole. This formalism is consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula and naturally produces t…
The NHEG algebra is an extension of Virasoro introduced in [arXiv:1503.07861]; it describes the symplectic symmetries of $(n+4)$-dimensional Near Horizon Extremal Geometries with $SL(2,R)\times U(1)^{n+1}$ isometry. In this work we construct the NHEG group and classify the (coadjoint) orbits of its action on phase space. As we show, the group consists of maps from an $n$-torus to the Virasoro group, so its orbits are bundles of standard Virasoro coadjoint orbits over $T^n$. We also describe the unitary representations that are expected to follow from the quantization of these orbits, and displ…
The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes in Einstein's theory of gravity is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of Newton's constant. Wald has proposed that in general theories of gravity the entropy of stationary black holes with bifurcate Killing horizons is a Noether charge which is in general different from the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We show that the Noether charge entropy is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of the effective gravitational coupling on the horizon defined by the coefficient of the kinetic term of specific graviton polarizations on the hor…
We consider two proposals for defining black hole entropy in spherical symmetry, where the horizon is defined locally as a trapping horizon. The first case, boundary terms in a dual-null form of the reduced action in two dimensions, gives a result that is proportional to the area. The second case, Wald's Noether current method, is generalized to dynamic black holes, giving an entropy that is just the area of the trapping horizon. These results are compared with a generalized first law of thermodynamics.
We present a one-function family of solutions to 4D vacuum Einstein equations. While all diffeomorphic to the same extremal Kerr black hole, they are labeled by well-defined conserved charges and are hence distinct geometries. We show that this family of solutions forms a phase space the symplectic structure of which is invariant under a $U(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra generated by currents $\mathbb{J}_n$ and Virasoro generators $\mathbb{L}_n$ with central charge six times angular momentum of the black hole. This symmetry algebra is well-defined everywhere in the spacetime, near the horizon or in the…
We construct the NHEG phase space, the classical phase space of Near-Horizon Extremal Geometries with fixed angular momenta and entropy, and with the largest symmetry algebra. We focus on vacuum solutions to $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Each element in the phase space is a geometry with $SL(2,\mathbb R)\times U(1)^{d-3}$ isometries which has vanishing $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ and constant $U(1)$ charges. We construct an on-shell vanishing symplectic structure, which leads to an infinite set of symplectic symmetries. In four spacetime dimensions, the phase space is unique and the symmetry algebra…
From first principles, I present a concrete realization of Carlip's idea on the black hole entropy from the conformal field theory on the horizon in any dimension. New formulation is free of inconsistencies encountered in Carlip's. By considering a correct gravity action, whose variational principle is well defined at the horizon, I $derive$ a correct $classical$ Virasoro generator for the surface deformations at the horizon through the canonical method. The existence of the classical Virasoro algebra is crucial in obtaining an operator Virasoro algebra, through canonical quantization, which p…
The Noether current and its variation relation with respect to diffeomorphism invariance of gravitational theories have been derived from the horizontal variation and vertical-horizontal bi-variation of the Lagrangian, respectively. For Einstein's GR in the stationary, axisymmetric black holes, the mass formula in vacuum can be derived from this Noether current although it definitely vanishes. This indicates that the mass formula of black holes is a vanishing Noether charge in this case. The first law of black hole thermodynamics can also be derived from the variation relation of this vanishin…
We treat spherically symmetric black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity by imposing boundary conditions on fluctuating metric on the horizon. Obtained effective two-dimensional theory admits Virasoro algebra near the horizon. This enables, with the help of Cardy formula, evaluation of the number of states. Obtained results coincide with the known macroscopic expression for the entropy of black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
It is shown in the covariant phase space formalism that the Noether charges with respect to the diffeomorphism generated by vector fields and their horizontal variations in general relativity form a diffeomorphism algebra. It is also shown with the help of the null tetrad which is well defined everywhere that the central term of the reduced diffeomorphism algebra on the Killing horizon for a large class of vector fields vanishes.
We investigate near-horizon geometry of the rotating Bañados Teiteilboim Zanelli (BTZ) black hole with torsion. Our main motivation is to gain insight into the role of torsion in the near-horizon geometry, which is well understood in the Riemannian case. We obtain that near-horizon geometry represents a generalization of AdS self-dual orbifold with non-trivial torsion. We analyze its asymptotic structure and derive the corresponding algebra of asymptotic symmetries, which consists of chiral Virasoro and centrally extended $u(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra.
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with $ SL(2,R) \times U(1)^N $ (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out entropy and entropy perturbation laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG an…
Near an event horizon, the action of general relativity acquires a new asymptotic conformal symmetry. Using two-dimensional dilaton gravity as a test case, I show that this symmetry results in a chiral Virasoro algebra with a calculable classical central charge, and that Cardy's formula for the density of states reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. This result lends support to the notion that the universal nature of black hole entropy is controlled by conformal symmetry near the horizon.
We show that, in the first or second order orthonormal frame formalism, black hole entropy is the horizon Noether charge for a combination of diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetry involving the Lie derivative of the frame. The Noether charge for diffeomorphisms alone is unsuitable, since a regular frame cannot be invariant under the flow of the Killing field at the bifurcation surface. We apply this formalism to Lagrangians polynomial in wedge products of the frame field 1-form and curvature 2-form, including general relativity, Lovelock gravity, and "topological" terms in four dimensions.
The covariant phase technique is used to compute the constraint algebra of the stationary axisymmetric charged black hole. A standard Virasoro subalgebra with corresponding central charge is constructed at a Killing horizon with Carlip's boundary conditions. For the Kerr-Newman black hole and the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, the density of states determined by conformal fields theory methods yields the statistical entropy which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We show that microscopic entropy formula based on Virasoro algebra follows from properties of stationary Killing horizons for Lagrangians with arbitrary dependence on Riemann tensor. The properties used are consequence of regularity of invariants of Riemann tensor on the horizon. Eventual generalisation of these results to Lagrangians with derivatives of Riemann tensor, as suggested by an example treated in the paper, relies on assuming regularity of invariants involving derivatives of Riemann tensor. This assumption however leads also to new interesting restrictions on metric functions near h…
We generalize the Noether current method proposed by Majhi and Padmanabhan recently to $f(R)$ gravity and conformal gravity and analyze the near horizon symmetry of black holes in these models. It is shown that the entropy obtained with Cardy's formula agrees with Wald entropy.
We analyze the near horizon symmetry of the extremal Kerr black hole within the framework of Poincaré gauge theory (PG) for two important limiting cases: Riemannian and teleparallel solution. We show that the algebra of canonical generators is realized by Virasoro algebra, with central charge which depends on the black hole horizon radius . The conformal entropy of the black hole is obtained via Cardy formula.
In the Carlip-Majhi-Padmanabhan approach, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping (apparent) horizon of the FRW metric. We solve Killing equations for $t,r$ part of the metric without fixing {\it a piori} the form of the scaling factor $a(t)$ which is determined from the requirement of consistency of Killing equations. Further restrictions on the form of the Killing vector follow from the requirement that Killing vector is null at the trapping horizon at all $t$. Applying the technique used to calculate microscopic entropy of Killing horizons, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping …
We show that the presence of spacetime torsion, unlike any other non-trivial modifications of the Einstein gravity, does \emph{not} affect black hole entropy. The theory being diffeomorphism invariant leads to a Noether current and hence to a Noether charge, which can be associated to the heat content of the spacetime. Furthermore, the evolution of the spacetime inheriting torsion can be encoded in the difference between suitably defined surface and bulk degrees of freedom. For static spacetimes the surface and bulk degrees of freedom coincides, leading to holographic equipartition. In doing s…
We consider a general, classical theory of gravity in $n$ dimensions, arising from a diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangian. In any such theory, to each vector field, $ξ^a$, on spacetime one can associate a local symmetry and, hence, a Noether current $(n-1)$-form, ${\bf j}$, and (for solutions to the field equations) a Noether charge $(n-2)$-form, ${\bf Q}$. Assuming only that the theory admits stationary black hole solutions with a bifurcate Killing horizon, and that the canonical mass and angular momentum of solutions are well defined at infinity, we show that the first law of black hole mecha…
We calculate the density of states of the 2+1 dimensional BTZ black hole in the micro- and grand-canonical ensembles. Our starting point is the relation between 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity and quantised Chern-Simons theory. In the micro-canonical ensemble, we find the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy by relating a Kac-Moody algebra of global gauge charges to a Virasoro algebra with a classical central charge via a twisted Sugawara construction. This construction is valid at all values of the black hole radius. At infinity it gives the asymptotic isometries of the black hole, and at the horizon …

The non-extremal stationary black holes do have "{\it hidden}" conformal symmetry in which case the generators form $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ group. Here, I explicitly show that the Sultana-Dyer black hole solution also possesses the similar near horizon conformal symmetry. This is the first example of time dependent case which also exhibits such feature. Moreover, using the corresponding generators I find the expression of the horizon entropy in the context of Virasoro algebra and Cardy formula. The result matches with the earlier findings. The present analysis is important since in reality the metr…
On a manifold with boundary, the constraint algebra of general relativity may acquire a central extension, which can be computed using covariant phase space techniques. When the boundary is a (local) Killing horizon, a natural set of boundary conditions leads to a Virasoro subalgebra with a calculable central charge. Conformal field theory methods may then be used to determine the density of states at the boundary. I consider a number of cases---black holes, Rindler space, de Sitter space, Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt spaces, and dilaton gravity---and show that the resulting density of states yields…
In this article we compute the black hole entropy by finding a classical central charge of the Virasoro algebra of a Liouville theory using the Cardy formula. This is done by performing a dimensional reduction of the Einstein Hilbert action with the ansatz of spherical symmetry and writing the metric in conformally flat form. We obtain two coupled field equations. Using the near horizon approximation the field equation for the conformal factor decouples. The one concerning the conformal factor is a Liouville equation, it posses the symmetry induced by a Virasoro algebra. We argue that it descr…
A calculation of the entropy of static, electrically charged, black holes with spherical, toroidal, and hyperbolic compact and oriented horizons, in D spacetime dimensions, is performed. These black holes live in an anti-de Sitter spacetime, i.e., a spacetime with negative cosmological constant. To find the entropy, the approach developed by Solodukhin is followed. The method consists in a redefinition of the variables in the metric, by considering the radial coordinate as a scalar field. Then one performs a 2+(D-2) dimensional reduction, where the (D-2) dimensions are in the angular coordinat…
Recently, Carlip proposed a derivation of the entropy of the two-dimensional dilatonic black hole by investigating the Virasoro algebra associated with a newly introduced near-horizon conformal symmetry. We point out not only that the algebra of these conformal transformations is not well defined on the horizon, but also that the correct use of the eigenvalue of the operator $L_0$ yields vanishing entropy. It has been shown that these problems can be resolved by choosing a different basis of the conformal transformations which is regular even at the horizon. We also show the generalization of …
According to the horizon fluff proposal microstates of a generic black hole belong to a certain subset of near horizon soft hairs that cannot be extended beyond the near horizon region. In [1,2] it was shown how the horizon fluff proposal works for AdS3 black holes. In this work we clarify further this picture by showing that BTZ black hole microstates are in general among the coherent states in the Hilbert space associated with conic spaces or their Virasoro descendants, provided we impose a (Bohr-type) quantization condition on the angular deficit. Thus BTZ black holes may be viewed as conde…
We calculate the Noether currents and charges for Einstein-Maxwell theory using a version of the Wald approach. In spherical symmetry, the choice of time can be taken as the Kodama vector. For the static case, the resulting combined Einstein-Maxwell charge is just the mass of the black hole. Using either a classically defined entropy or the Iyer-Wald selection rules, the entropy is found to be just a quarter of the area of the trapping horizon. We propose identifying the combined Noether charge as an energy associated with the Kodama time. For the extremal black hole case, we discuss the probl…
The Noether-charge realization and the Hamiltonian realization for the $\diff({\cal M})$ algebra in diffeomorphism invariant gravitational theories are studied in a covariant formalism. For the Killing vector fields, the Nother-charge realization leads to the mass formula as an entire vanishing Noether charge for the vacuum black hole spacetimes in general relativity and the corresponding first law of the black hole mechanics. It is analyzed in which sense the Hamiltonian functionals form the $\diff({\cal M})$ algebra under the Poisson bracket and shown how the Noether charges with respect to …
