We show that the gravitational phase space for the near-horizon region of a bifurcate, axisymmetric Killing horizon in any dimension admits a 2D conformal symmetry algebra with central charges proportional to the area. This extends the construction of [Haco et. al., JHEP 12, 098 (2018)] to generic Killing horizons appearing in solutions of Einstein's equations, and motivates a holographic description in terms of a 2D conformal field theory. The Cardy entropy in such a field theory agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the horizon, suggesting a microscopic interpretation.
We treat D-dimensional black holes with Killing horizon for extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use Carlip method and impose boundary conditions on horizon what enables us to identify Virasoro algebra and evaluate its central charge and Hamiltonian eigenvalue. The Cardy formula allows then to calculate the number of states and thus provides for microscopic interpretation of entropy.
Through the analysis of null symplectic structure, we derive the condition for integrable Virasoro generators on the covariant phase space of axisymmetric Killing horizons. A weak boundary condition selects a special relationship between the two temperatures for the putative CFT. When the integrability is satisfied for both future and past horizons, the two central charges are equal. At the end we discuss the physical implications.
We study the zeroth law for Killing horizon in scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity, and show that the surface gravity of a general Killing horizon in the scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity is constant, provided that the dominant energy condition is obeyed by the matter field.
We perturbatively construct a three-dimensional rotating AdS black hole with a real scalar hair. We choose the mass of a scalar field slightly above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound and impose a more general boundary condition for the bulk scalar field at AdS infinity. We first show that rotating BTZ black holes are unstable against superradiant modes under our more general boundary condition. Next we construct a rotating hairy black hole perturbatively with respect to a small amplitude $ε$ of the scalar field, up to $O(ε^4)$. The lumps of non-linearly perturbed geometry admit only one Killing…
Expanding upon [arXiv:1404.4472, 1511.06079], we provide further detailed analysis of Bañados geometries, the most general solutions to the AdS3 Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. We analyze in some detail the causal, horizon and boundary structure, and geodesic motion on these geometries, as well as the two class of symplectic charges one can associate with these geometries: charges associated with the exact symmetries and the Virasoro charges. We elaborate further the one-to-one relation between the coadjoint orbits of two copies of Virasoro group and Bañados geometrie…
We impose a certain class of boundary conditions on Killing horizon and show for Lagrangians with arbitrary curvature dependence that one can identify a Virasoro algebra with nontrivial central charge and calculable Hamiltonian eigenvalue. Entropy can then be calculated from Cardy formula.
An exact hairy asymptotically locally AdS black hole solution with a flat horizon in the Einstein-nonlinear sigma model system in (3+1) dimensions is constructed. The ansatz for the nonlinear $SU(2)$ field is regular everywhere and depends explicitly on Killing coordinates, but in such a way that its energy-momentum tensor is compatible with a metric with Killing fields. The solution is characterized by a discrete parameter which has neither topological nor Noether charge associated with it and therefore represents a hair. A $U(1)$ gauge field interacting with Einstein gravity can also be incl…
A set of infinitesimal ${\rm Virasoro_{\,L}}\otimes{\rm Virasoro_{\,R}}$ diffeomorphisms are presented which act non-trivially on the horizon of a generic Kerr black hole with spin J. The covariant phase space formalism provides a formula for the Virasoro charges as surface integrals on the horizon. Integrability and associativity of the charge algebra are shown to require the inclusion of `Wald-Zoupas' counterterms. A counterterm satisfying the known consistency requirement is constructed and yields central charges $c_L=c_R=12J$. Assuming the existence of a quantum Hilbert space on which thes…
Recently it has been speculated that a set of infinitesimal ${\rm Virasoro_{\,L}}\otimes{\rm Virasoro_{\,R}}$ diffeomorphisms exist which act non-trivially on the horizon of some black holes such as kerr and Kerr-Newman black hole \cite{Haco:2018ske,Haco:2019ggi}. Using this symmetry in covariant phase space formalism one can obtains Virasoro charges as surface integrals on the horizon. Kerr-Bolt spacetime is well-known for its asymptotically topology and has been studied widely in recent years. In this work we are interested to find conserved charge associated to the Virosora symmetry of Kerr…
The set of solutions to the AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions is known to be a family of metrics labeled by two arbitrary periodic functions, respectively left and right-moving. It turns out that there exists an appropriate presymplectic form which vanishes on-shell. This promotes this set of metrics to a phase space in which the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic symmetries become symplectic symmetries in the bulk of spacetime. Moreover, any element in the phase space admits two global Killing vectors. We show that the conserved charges associated with these Killing vect…
The covariant phase technique is used to compute the constraint algebra of the stationary axisymmetric charged black hole. A standard Virasoro subalgebra with corresponding central charge is constructed at a Killing horizon with Carlip's boundary conditions. For the Kerr-Newman black hole and the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, the density of states determined by conformal fields theory methods yields the statistical entropy which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We study the near horizon geometry of both static and stationary extremal Oliva Tempo Troncoso (OTT) black holes. For each of these cases, a set of consistent asymptotic conditions is introduced. The canonical generator for the static configuration is shown to be regular. For the rotating OTT black hole, the asymptotic symmetry is described by the time reparametrization, the chiral Virasoro and centrally extended $u(1)$ Kac-Moody algebras.
We present the first examples of black holes with only one Killing field. The solutions describe five dimensional AdS black holes with scalar hair. The black holes are neither stationary nor axisymmetric, but are invariant under a single Killing field which is tangent to the null generators of the horizon. Some of these solutions can be viewed as putting black holes into rotating boson stars. Others are related to the endpoint of a superradiant instability. For given mass and angular momentum (within a certain range) several black hole solutions exist.
In [1] the horizon fluffs proposal is put forward to identify microstates of generic non-extremal three-dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes. The proposal is that black hole microstates, which were dubbed as horizon fluffs, are states labelled by the conserved charges associated with non-trivial diffeomorphisms on the near horizon geometry and these states are not in the coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro algebra at the Brown-Henneaux central charge, associated with the BTZ black holes. It is also known that AdS3 Einstein gravity has more general black hole solutio…
In the Carlip-Majhi-Padmanabhan approach, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping (apparent) horizon of the FRW metric. We solve Killing equations for $t,r$ part of the metric without fixing {\it a piori} the form of the scaling factor $a(t)$ which is determined from the requirement of consistency of Killing equations. Further restrictions on the form of the Killing vector follow from the requirement that Killing vector is null at the trapping horizon at all $t$. Applying the technique used to calculate microscopic entropy of Killing horizons, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping …
We provide a simple and straightforward procedure for defining a Virasoro algebra based on the diffeomorphisms near a null surface in a spacetime and obtain the entropy density of the null surface from its central charge. We use the off-shell Noether current corresponding to the diffeomorphism invariance of a gravitational Lagrangian $L(g_{ab},R_{abcd})$ and define the Virasoro algebra from its variation. This allows us to identify the central charge and the zero mode eigenvalue using which we obtain the entropy density of the Killing horizon. Our approach works for all Lanczos-Lovelock models…
While the argument by Zamolodchikov and Polchinski suggests global conformal invariance implies Virasoro invariance in two-dimensional unitary conformal field theories with discrete dilatation spectrum, it is not the case in more general situations without these assumptions. We indeed show that almost all the globally conformal invariant differential equations in two dimensions are neither Virasoro invariant nor Weyl invariant. The only exceptions are the higher spin conservation laws, conformal Killing tensor equations and the Laplace equation of a conformal scalar.
On a manifold with boundary, the constraint algebra of general relativity may acquire a central extension, which can be computed using covariant phase space techniques. When the boundary is a (local) Killing horizon, a natural set of boundary conditions leads to a Virasoro subalgebra with a calculable central charge. Conformal field theory methods may then be used to determine the density of states at the boundary. I consider a number of cases---black holes, Rindler space, de Sitter space, Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt spaces, and dilaton gravity---and show that the resulting density of states yields…
Several investigations show that in a very small length scale there exists corrections to the entropy of black hole horizon. Due to fluctuations of the background metric and the external fields the action incorporates corrections. In the low energy regime, the one loop effective action in four dimensions leads to trace anomaly. We start from the Noether current corresponding to the Einstein-Hilbert plus the one loop effective action to calculate the charge for the diffeomorphisms which preserve the Killing horizon structure. Then a bracket among the charges is calculated. We show that the Four…
We investigate asymptotic symmetries regularly defined on spherically symmetric Killing horizons in the Einstein theory with or without the cosmological constant. Those asymptotic symmetries are described by asymptotic Killing vectors, along which the Lie derivatives of perturbed metrics vanish on a Killing horizon. We derive the general form of asymptotic Killing vectors and find that the group of the asymptotic symmetries consists of rigid O(3) rotations of a horizon two-sphere and supertranslations along the null direction on the horizon, which depend arbitrarily on the null coordinate as w…
Recently a set of diffeomorphisms were found which act nontrivially on the Kerr horizon and form a left-right pair of Virasoro algebras. Using the boundary formula for the associated central charge and assuming applicability of the Cardy formula to a putative dual CFT, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Kerr black hole was reproduced. In this paper, the addition of charge to the black hole is shown to require a minimal modification to this construction which then reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Kerr-Newman black hole.
Scalar fields minimally coupled to General Relativity in three dimensions are considered. For certain families of self-interaction potentials, new exact solutions describing solitons and hairy black holes are found. It is shown that they fit within a relaxed set of asymptotically AdS boundary conditions, whose asymptotic symmetry group coincides with the one for pure gravity and its canonical realization possesses the standard central extension. Solitons are devoid of integration constants and their (negative) mass, fixed and determined by nontrivial functions of the self-interaction couplings…
We discuss various properties of rotating Killing horizons in generic $F(R)$ theories of gravity in dimension four for spacetimes endowed with two commuting Killing vector fields. Assuming there is no curvature singularity anywhere on or outside the horizon, we construct a suitable $(3+1)$-foliation. We show that similar to Einstein's gravity, we must have $T_{ab}k^ak^b=0$ on the Killing horizon, where $k^a$ is a null geodesic tangent to the horizon. For axisymmetric spacetimes, the effective gravitational coupling $\sim\,F'^{-1}(R)$ should usually depend upon the polar coordinate and hence ne…
General Relativity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in three dimensions is shown to admit exact analytic soliton solutions, such that the metric and the scalar field are regular everywhere. Since the scalar field acquires slow fall-off at infinity, the soliton describes an asymptotically AdS spacetime in a relaxed sense as compared with the one of Brown and Henneaux. Nevertheless, the asymptotic symmetry group remains to be the conformal group, and the algebra of the canonical generators possesses the standard central extension. For this class of asymptotic behavior, the theory also …
We show that microscopic black hole entropy formula based on Virasoro algebra can be derived from usual properties of stationary Killing horizons alone and absence of singularities of curvature invariants on them. In such a way some usual additional assumptions are shown to be fulfilled. In addition, for all quantities power expansion near horizon and thus explicit insight of the limiting procedure is given. More important the near horizon conformal symmetry proposed by Carlip together with its consequences on microscopic entropy is given a clear geometric origin.
There are certain black hole solutions in general relativity (GR) which are conformally related to the stationary solutions in GR. It is not obvious that the horizon entropy of these spacetimes is also one quarter of the area of horizon, like the stationary ones. Here I study this topic in the context of Virasoro algebra and Cardy formula. Using the fact that the conformal spacetime admits conformal Killing vector and the horizon is determined by the vanishing of the norm of it, the diffemorphisms are obtained which keep the near horizon structure invariant. The Noether charge and a bracket am…
We determine the most general three-dimensional vacuum spacetime with a negative cosmological constant containing a non-singular Killing horizon. We show that the general solution with a spatially compact horizon possesses a second commuting Killing field and deduce that it must be related to the BTZ black hole (or its near-horizon geometry) by a diffeomorphism. We show there is a general class of asymptotically AdS$_3$ extreme black holes with arbitrary charges with respect to one of the asymptotic-symmetry Virasoro algebras and vanishing charges with respect to the other. We interpret these …
We present a family of solutions of Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a complex, massive scalar field, describing asymptotically flat, spinning black holes with scalar hair and a regular horizon. These hairy black holes (HBHs) are supported by rotation and have no static limit. Besides mass M and angular momentum J, they carry a conserved, continuous Noether charge Q measuring the scalar hair. HBHs branch off from the Kerr metric at the threshold of the superradiant instability and reduce to spinning boson stars in the limit of vanishing horizon area. They overlap with Kerr black holes f…
We extend the recent D=5 results of Dias, Horowitz and Santos by finding asymptotically AdS rotating black hole and boson star solutions with scalar hair in arbitrary odd spacetime dimension. Both the black holes and the boson stars are invariant under a single Killing vector field which co-rotates with the scalar field and, in the black hole case, is tangent to the generator of the horizon. Furthermore, we explicitly construct boson star and small black hole ($r_+ \ll \ell$) solutions perturbatively assuming a small amplitude for the scalar field, resulting in solutions valid for low energies…
We define and study asymptotic Killing and conformal Killing vectors in $d$-dimensional Minkowski, (A)dS, $\mathbb{R}\times S^{d-1}$ and ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}$. We construct the associated quantum charges for an arbitrary CFT and show they satisfy a closed algebra that includes the BMS as a sub-algebra (i.e. supertranslations and superrotations) plus a novel transformation we call `superdilations'. We study representations of this algebra in the Hilbert space of the CFT, as well as the action of the finite transformations obtained by exponentiating the charges. In the context of the AdS/C…
We show that microscopic entropy formula based on Virasoro algebra follows from properties of stationary Killing horizons for Lagrangians with arbitrary dependence on Riemann tensor. The properties used are consequence of regularity of invariants of Riemann tensor on the horizon. Eventual generalisation of these results to Lagrangians with derivatives of Riemann tensor, as suggested by an example treated in the paper, relies on assuming regularity of invariants involving derivatives of Riemann tensor. This assumption however leads also to new interesting restrictions on metric functions near h…
Within the first order formalism static solutions of generic dilaton gravity in 2D with self-interacting (scalar) matter can be discussed with ease. The question of (non)existence of Killing horizons is addressed and the interplay with asymptotic conditions is investigated. Naturally, such an analysis has to be a global one. A central element in the discussion is the rank of the Jacobi matrix of the underlying dynamical system. With some (pathological) exceptions Killing horizons exist only if it equals to 3. For certain self-interactions asymptotically flat black holes with scalar hair do exi…
Considerable interest has recently been expressed in the entropy versus area relationship for ``dirty'' black holes --- black holes in interaction with various classical matter fields, distorted by higher derivative gravity, or infested with various forms of quantum hair. In many cases it is found that the entropy is simply related to the area of the event horizon: S = k A_H/(4\ell_P^2). For example, the ``entropy = (1/4) area'' law *holds* for: Schwarzschild, Reissner--Nordstrom, Kerr--Newman, and dilatonic black holes. On the other hand, the ``entropy = (1/4) area'' law *fails* for: various …

We make use of the fact that the optical geometry near a static non-degenerate Killing horizon is asymptotically hyperbolic to investigate universal features of black hole physics. We show how the Gauss-Bonnet theorem allows certain lensing scenarios to be ruled in or out. We find rates for the loss of scalar, vector and fermionic `hair' as objects fall quasi- statically towards the horizon. In the process we find the Lienard-Wiechert potential for hyperbolic space and calculate the force between electrons mediated by neutrinos, extending the flat space result of Feinberg and Sucher. We use th…
We construct two types of phase spaces for asymptotically de Sitter Einstein-Hilbert gravity in each spacetime dimension $d \ge 3$. One type contains solutions asymptotic to the expanding spatially-flat ($k=0$) cosmological patch of de Sitter space while the other is asymptotic to the expanding hyperbolic $(k=-1)$ patch. Each phase space has a non-trivial asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) which includes the isometry group of the corresponding de Sitter patch. For $d=3$ and $k=-1$ our ASG also contains additional generators and leads to a Virasoro algebra with vanishing central charge. Furthermor…
In theories with derivative (self-)interactions, the propagation of perturbations on nontrivial field configurations is determined by effective metrics. Generalized scalar-tensor theories belong in this class and this implies that the matter fields and gravitational perturbations do not necessarily experience the same causal structure. Motivated by this, we explore the causal structure of black holes as perceived by scalar fields in the Horndeski class. We consider linearized perturbations on a fixed background metric that describes a generic black hole. The effective metric that determines th…
We develop an approach for solving the string equations of motion and Virasoro constraints in any background which has some (unfixed) number of commuting Killing vector fields. It is based on a specific ansatz for the string embedding. We apply the above mentioned approach for strings moving inAdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with 2-form NS-NS B-field. We succeeded to find solutions for a large class of string configurations on this background. In particular, we derive dyonic giant magnon solutions in the R_t x S^3 subspace, and obtain the leading finite-size correction to the dispersion relation.
According to the horizon fluff proposal microstates of a generic black hole belong to a certain subset of near horizon soft hairs that cannot be extended beyond the near horizon region. In [1,2] it was shown how the horizon fluff proposal works for AdS3 black holes. In this work we clarify further this picture by showing that BTZ black hole microstates are in general among the coherent states in the Hilbert space associated with conic spaces or their Virasoro descendants, provided we impose a (Bohr-type) quantization condition on the angular deficit. Thus BTZ black holes may be viewed as conde…
We consider the exact solutions of the supergravity theories in various dimensions in which the space-time has the form M_{d} x S^{D-d} where M_{d} is an Einstein space admitting a conformal Killing vector and S^{D-d} is a sphere of an appropriate dimension. We show that, if the cosmological constant of M_{d} is negative and the conformal Killing vector is space-like, then such solutions will have a conformal Penrose limit: M^{(0)}_{d} x S^{D-d} where M^{(0)}_{d} is a generalized d-dimensional AdS plane wave. We study the properties of the limiting solutions and find that M^{(0)}_{d} has 1/4 s…
The gravitational shock waves have provided crucial insights into entanglement structures of black holes in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Recent progress on the soft hair physics suggests that these developments from holography may also be applicable to geometries beyond negatively curved spacetime. In this work, we derive a remarkably simple thermodynamic relation which relates the gravitational shock wave to a microscopic area deformation. Our treatment is based on the covariant phase space formalism and is applicable to any Killing horizon in generic static spacetime which is governed by arbi…
Different classes of exact solutions for the BHT massive gravity theory are constructed and analyzed. We focus in the special case of the purely quadratic Lagrangian, whose field equations are irreducibly of fourth order and are known to admit asymptotically locally flat black holes endowed with gravitational hair. The first class corresponds to a Kerr-Schild deformation of Minkowski spacetime along a covariantly constant null vector. As in the case of General Relativity, the field equations linearize so that the solution can be easily shown to be described by four arbitrary functions of a sin…
