Color codes are a class of topological quantum codes with a high error threshold and large set of transversal encoded gates, and are thus suitable for fault tolerant quantum computation in two-dimensional architectures. Recently, computationally efficient decoders for the color codes were proposed. We describe an alternate efficient iterative decoder for topological color codes, and apply it to the color code on hexagonal lattice embedded on a torus. In numerical simulations, we find an error threshold of 7.8% for independent dephasing and spin flip errors.

Three dimensional (3D) toric codes are a class of stabilizer codes with local checks and come under the umbrella of topological codes. While decoding algorithms have been proposed for the 3D toric code on a cubic lattice, there have been very few studies on the decoding of 3D toric codes over arbitrary lattices. Color codes in 3D can be mapped to toric codes. However, the resulting toric codes are not defined on cubic lattice. They are arbitrary lattices with triangular faces. Decoding toric codes over an arbitrary lattice will help in studying the performance of color codes. Furthermore, gaug…
Topological quantum codes are favored because they allow qubit layouts that are suitable for practical implementation. An $N$-qubit topological code can be decoded by minimum-weight perfect matching (MWPM) with complexity $O(\text{poly}(N))$ if it is of CSS-type. Recently it is shown that various quantum codes, including non-CSS codes, can be decoded by an adapted belief propagation with memory effects (denoted MBP) with complexity almost linear in $N$. In this paper, we show that various two-dimensional topological codes, CSS or non-CSS, regardless of the layout, can be decoded by MBP, includ…
Universal fault-tolerant quantum computers will require the use of efficient protocols to implement encoded operations necessary in the execution of algorithms. In this work, we show how solvers for satisfiability modulo theories (SMT solvers) can be used to automate the construction of Clifford circuits with certain fault-tolerance properties and we apply our techniques to a fault-tolerant magic-state-preparation protocol. Part of the protocol requires converting magic states encoded in the color code to magic states encoded in the surface code. Since the teleportation step involves decoding …
Topological subsystem color codes (TSCCs) are an important class of topological subsystem codes that allow for syndrome measurement with only 2-body measurements. It is expected that such low complexity measurements can help in fault tolerance. While TSCCs have been studied over depolarizing noise model, their performance over the erasure channel has not been studied as much. Recently, we proposed erasure decoders for TSCCs and reported a threshold of 9.7%. In this paper, we continue our study of TSCCS over the erasure channel. We propose two erasure decoders for topological subsystem color co…
In previous work, we have shown that pseudocodewords can be used to characterize the behavior of decoders not only for classical codes but also for quantum stabilizer codes. With the insights obtained from this pseudocodewords-based analysis, we have also introduced a two-stage decoder based on pseudocodewords for quantum cycle codes that leads to improved decoding performance. In this paper, we consider quantum (stabilizer) color codes and propose a two-stage decoder that is a generalization of the pseudocodeword-based decoder for quantum cycle codes. Our decoder has only local or error-weigh…
In order to build a large scale quantum computer, one must be able to correct errors extremely fast. We design a fast decoding algorithm for topological codes to correct for Pauli errors and erasure and combination of both errors and erasure. Our algorithm has a worst case complexity of $O(n α(n))$, where $n$ is the number of physical qubits and $α$ is the inverse of Ackermann's function, which is very slowly growing. For all practical purposes, $α(n) \leq 3$. We prove that our algorithm performs optimally for errors of weight up to $(d-1)/2$ and for loss of up to $d-1$ qubits, where $d$ is th…
Toric codes and color codes are two important classes of topological codes. Kubica, Yoshida, and Pastawski showed that any $D$-dimensional color code can be mapped to a finite number of toric codes in $D$-dimensions. In this paper we propose an alternate map of 3D color codes to 3D toric codes with a view to decoding 3D color codes. Our approach builds on Delfosse's result for 2D color codes and exploits the topological properties of these codes. Our result reduces the decoding of 3D color codes to that of 3D toric codes. Bit flip errors are decoded by projecting on one set of 3D toric codes w…
Trellis decoders are a general decoding technique first applied to qubit-based quantum error correction codes by Ollivier and Tillich in 2006. Here we improve the scalability and practicality of their theory, show that it has strong structure, extend the results using classical coding theory as a guide, and demonstrate a canonical form from which the structural properties of the decoding graph may be computed. The resulting formalism is valid for any prime-dimensional quantum system. The modified decoder works for any stabilizer code $S$ and separates into two parts: a one-time, offline comput…
Fault tolerance is a prerequisite for scalable quantum computing. Architectures based on 2D topological codes are effective for near-term implementations of fault tolerance. To obtain high performance with these architectures, we require a decoder which can adapt to the wide variety of error models present in experiments. The typical approach to the problem of decoding the surface code is to reduce it to minimum-weight perfect matching in a way that provides a suboptimal threshold error rate, and is specialized to correct a specific error model. Recently, optimal threshold error rates for a va…
Topological quantum error-correcting codes are a promising candidate for building fault-tolerant quantum computers. Decoding topological codes optimally, however, is known to be a computationally hard problem. Various decoders have been proposed that achieve approximately optimal error thresholds. Due to practical constraints, it is not known if there exists an obvious choice for a decoder. In this paper, we introduce a framework which can combine arbitrary decoders for any given code to significantly reduce the logical error rates. We rely on the crucial observation that two different decodin…
We introduce and analyze a new type of decoding algorithm called General Color Clustering (GCC), based on renormalization group methods, to be used in qudit color codes. The performance of this decoder is analyzed under code capacity depolarizing noise, and is used to obtain the first fault-tolerant threshold estimates for qudit 6-6-6 color codes. The proposed decoder is compared with similar decoding schemes for qudit surface codes as well as the current leading qubit decoders for both sets of codes. We find that, as with surface codes, clustering performs sub-optimally for qubit color codes,…
Fault-tolerant quantum computation relies on scaling up quantum error correcting codes in order to suppress the error rate on the encoded quantum states. Topological codes, such as the surface code or color codes are leading candidates for practical scalable quantum error correction and require efficient and scalable decoders. In this work, we propose and study the efficiency of a decoder for 2D topological color codes on the 4.8.8 lattice, by building on the work of [1] for color codes on hexagonal lattices. The decoder is based on a rescaling approach, in which syndrome information on a part…
Thermal stability of the Topological Color Code in presence of a thermal bath is studied. We study the Lindblad evolution of the observables in the weak coupling limit of the Born-Markov approximation. The auto-correlation functions of the observables are used as a figure of merit for the thermal stability. We show that all of the observables auto-correlation functions decay exponentially in time. By finding a lower bound of the decay rate, which is a constant independent of the system size, we show that the Topological Color Code is unstable against thermal fluctuations from the bath at finit…
Efficient high-performance decoding of topological stabilizer codes has the potential to crucially improve the balance between logical failure rates and the number and individual error rates of the constituent qubits. High-threshold maximum-likelihood decoders require an explicit error model for Pauli errors to decode a specific syndrome, whereas lower-threshold heuristic approaches such as minimum weight matching are "error agnostic". Here we consider an intermediate approach, formulating a decoder that depends on the bias, i.e., the relative probability of phase-flip to bit-flip errors, but …

We show that belief propagation combined with ordered statistics post-processing is a general decoder for quantum low density parity check codes constructed from the hypergraph product. To this end, we run numerical simulations of the decoder applied to three families of hypergraph product code: topological codes, fixed-rate random codes and a new class of codes that we call semi-topological codes. Our new code families share properties of both topological and random hypergraph product codes, with a construction that allows for a finely-controlled trade-off between code threshold and stabilize…
Finding optimal correction of errors in generic stabilizer codes is a computationally hard problem, even for simple noise models. While this task can be simplified for codes with some structure, such as topological stabilizer codes, developing good and efficient decoders still remains a challenge. In our work, we systematically study a very versatile class of decoders based on feedforward neural networks. To demonstrate adaptability, we apply neural decoders to the triangular color and toric codes under various noise models with realistic features, such as spatially-correlated errors. We repor…
We present a scalable architecture for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation using networks of voltage-controlled Majorana Cooper pair boxes, and topological color codes for error correction. Color codes have a set of transversal gates which coincides with the set of topologically protected gates in Majorana-based systems, namely the Clifford gates. In this way, we establish color codes as providing a natural setting in which advantages offered by topological hardware can be combined with those arising from topological error-correcting software for full-fledged fault-tolerant quantum …
We introduce an efficient decoder of the color code in $d\geq 2$ dimensions, the Restriction Decoder, which uses any $d$-dimensional toric code decoder combined with a local lifting procedure to find a recovery operation. We prove that the Restriction Decoder successfully corrects errors in the color code if and only if the corresponding toric code decoding succeeds. We also numerically estimate the Restriction Decoder threshold for the color code in two and three dimensions against the bit-flip and phase-flip noise with perfect syndrome extraction. We report that the 2D color code threshold $…
Surface codes exploit topological protection to increase error resilience in quantum computing devices and can in principle be implemented in existing hardware. They are one of the most promising candidates for active error correction, not least due to a polynomial-time decoding algorithm which admits one of the highest predicted error thresholds. We consider the dependence of this threshold on underlying assumptions including different noise models, and analyze the performance of a minimum weight perfect matching (MWPM) decoding compared to a mathematically optimal maximum likelihood (ML) dec…
Active error decoding and correction of topological quantum codes - in particular the toric code - remains one of the most viable routes to large scale quantum information processing. In contrast, passive error correction relies on the natural physical dynamics of a system to protect encoded quantum information. However, the search is ongoing for a completely satisfactory passive scheme applicable to locally-interacting two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate dynamical decoders that provide passive error correction by embedding the decoding process into local dynamics. We propose a speci…
We propose an efficient scheme for simulating the topological phases of matter based on silicon-vacancy (SiV) center arrays in phononic crystals. This phononic band gap structure allows for long-range spin-spin interactions with a tunable profile. Under a particular periodic microwave driving, the band-gap mediated spin-spin interaction can be further designed with the form of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian. In momentum space, we investigate the topological characters of the SSH model, and show that the topological nontrivial phase can be obtained through modulating the periodic dr…
Fracton topological phases have a large number of materialized symmetries that enforce a rigid structure on their excitations. Remarkably, we find that the symmetries of a quantum error-correcting code based on a fracton phase enable us to design decoding algorithms. Here we propose and implement decoding algorithms for the three-dimensional X-cube model. In our example, decoding is parallelized into a series of two-dimensional matching problems, thus significantly simplifying the most time consuming component of the decoder. We also find that the rigid structure of its point excitations enabl…
We establish and explore a new connection between quantum information theory and classical statistical mechanics by studying the problem of qubit losses in 2D topological color codes. We introduce a protocol to cope with qubit losses, which is based on the identification and removal of a twin qubit from the code, and which guarantees the recovery of a valid three-colorable and trivalent reconstructed color code lattice. Moreover, we show that determining the corresponding qubit loss error threshold is equivalent to a new generalized classical percolation process. We numerically compute the ass…
Under an appropriate symmetric bulk bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki matrix product state wave function for the odd integer spin chains, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, describing the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the topological phase from the trivial phase with the same symmetry. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry breaking phase transitions. Recently, the framework of matrix product states for topological phases with Ma…
