The entanglement properties of a class of topological stabilizer states, the so called \emph{topological color codes} defined on a two-dimensional lattice or \emph{2-colex}, are calculated. The topological entropy is used to measure the entanglement of different bipartitions of the 2-colex. The dependency of the ground state degeneracy on the genus of the surface shows that the color code can support a topological order, and the contribution of the color in its structure makes it interesting to compare with the Kitaev's toric code. While a qubit is maximally entangled with rest of the system, two qubits are no longer entangled showing that the color code is genuinely multipartite entangled. For a convex region, it is found that entanglement entropy depends only on the degrees of freedom living on the boundary of two subsystems. The boundary scaling of entropy is supplemented with a topological subleading term which for a color code defined on a compact surface is twice than the toric code. From the entanglement entropy we construct a set of bipartitions in which the diverging term arising from the boundary term is washed out, and the remaining non-vanishing term will have a topological nature. Besides the color code on the compact surface, we also analyze the entanglement properties of a version of color code with border, i.e \emph{triangular color code}.
A charged entanglement entropy is a new measure which probes quantum entanglement between different charge sectors. We study symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in 2+1 dimensional space-time by using this charged entanglement entropy. SPT phases are short range entangled states without topological order and hence cannot be detected by the topological entanglement entropy. We demonstrate that the universal part of the charged entanglement entropy is non-zero for non-trivial SPT phases and therefore it is a useful measure to detect short range entangled topological phases. We also discus…
We study the ground-state entanglement of gapped domain walls between topologically ordered systems in two spatial dimensions. We derive a universal correction to the ground-state entanglement entropy, which is equal to the logarithm of the total quantum dimension of a set of superselection sectors localized on the domain wall. This expression is derived from the recently proposed entanglement bootstrap method.
"Topological ordered" phases such as gapped quantum spin-liquids and fractional quantum Hall states possess ground state degeneracy on a torus. We show that the topological nature of this degeneracy has interesting consequences for the entanglement structure of the degenerate ground states. This leads to a simple method for detecting topological order, which is ready-made for numerical schemes such as density matrix renormalization group. The method is valid for phases that do or do not possess edge states alike. We demonstrate it by calculating the entanglement spectrum and the topological en…
We compute the entanglement entropy in a 2+1 dimensional topological order in the presence of gapped boundaries. Specifically, we consider entanglement cuts that cut through the boundaries. We argue that based on general considerations of the bulk-boundary correspondence, the "twisted characters" feature in the Renyi entropy, and the topological entanglement entropy is controlled by a "half-linking number" in direct analogy to the role played by the S-modular matrix in the absence of boundaries. We also construct a class of boundary states based on the half-linking numbers that provides a "clo…
Here we show the connection between topological order and the geometric entanglement, as measured by the logarithm of the overlap between a given state and its closest product state of blocks, for the topological universality class of the toric code model. As happens for the entanglement entropy, we find that for large block sizes the geometric entanglement is, up to possible subleading corrections, the sum of two contributions: a non-universal bulk contribution obeying a boundary law times the number of blocks, and a universal contribution quantifying the underlying pattern of long-range enta…
In this work the topological order at finite temperature in two-dimensional color code is studied. The topological entropy is used to measure the behavior of the topological order. Topological order in color code arises from the colored string-net structures. By imposing the hard constrained limit the exact solution of the entanglement entropy becomes possible. For finite size systems, by raising the temperature, one type of string-net structure is thermalized and the associative topological entropy vanishes. In the thermodynamic limit the underlying topological order is fragile even at very l…
We exactly evaluate the entanglement of a six vertex and a nine vertex graph states which correspond to non ''two-colorable'' graphs. The upper bound of entanglement for five vertices ring graph state is improved to 2.9275, less than upper bound determined by LOCC. An upper bound of entanglement is proposed based on the definition of graph state.
The ground states of topological orders condense extended objects and support topological excitations. This nontrivial property leads to nonzero topological entanglement entropy $S_{topo}$ for conventional topological orders. Fracton topological order is an exotic class of models which is beyond the description of TQFT. With some assumptions about the condensates and the topological excitations, we derive a lower bound of the nonlocal entanglement entropy $S_{nonlocal}$ (a generalization of $S_{topo}$). The lower bound applies to Abelian stabilizer models including conventional topological ord…
We propose a diagnostic for finite temperature topological order using `topological entanglement negativity', the long-range component of a mixed-state entanglement measure. As a demonstration, we study the toric code model in $d$ spatial dimension for $d$=2,3,4, and find that when topological order survives thermal fluctuations, it possesses a non-zero topological entanglement negativity, whose value is equal to the topological entanglement entropy at zero temperature. Furthermore, we show that the Gibbs state of 2D and 3D toric code at any non-zero temperature, and that of 4D toric code abov…
Here we investigate the connection between topological order and the geometric entanglement, as measured by the logarithm of the overlap between a given state and its closest product state of blocks. We do this for a variety of topologically-ordered systems such as the toric code, double semion, color code, and quantum double models. As happens for the entanglement entropy, we find that for sufficiently large block sizes the geometric entanglement is, up to possible sub-leading corrections, the sum of two contributions: a bulk contribution obeying a boundary law times the number of blocks, and…
We study the properties of entanglement in two-dimensional topologically ordered phases of matter. Such phases support anyons, quasiparticles with exotic exchange statistics. The emergent nonlocal state spaces of anyonic systems admit a particular form of entanglement that does not exist in conventional quantum mechanical systems. We study this entanglement by adapting standard notions of entropy to anyonic systems. We use the algebraic theory of anyon models (modular tensor categories) to illustrate the nonlocal entanglement structure of anyonic systems. Using this formalism, we present a gen…
We report on an experiment demonstrating entanglement swapping of time-frequency entangled photons. We perform a frequency-resolved Bell-state measurement on the idler photons from two independent entangled photon pairs, which projects the signal photons onto a two-color Bell state. We verify entanglement in this heralded state using two-photon interference and observing quantum beating without the use of filters, indicating the presence of two-color entanglement. Our method could lend itself to use as a highly-tunable source of frequency-bin entangled single photons.
We study the change in topological entanglement entropy that occurs when a two-dimensional system in a topologically ordered phase undergoes a transition to another such phase due to the formation of a Bose condensate. We also consider the topological entanglement entropy of systems with domains in different topological phases, and of phase boundaries between these domains. We calculate the topological entropy of these interfaces and derive two fundamental relations between the interface topological entropy and the bulk topological entropies on both sides of the interface.
We generalize the topological entanglement entropy to a family of topological Renyi entropies parametrized by a parameter alpha, in an attempt to find new invariants for distinguishing topologically ordered phases. We show that, surprisingly, all topological Renyi entropies are the same, independent of alpha for all non-chiral topological phases. This independence shows that topologically ordered ground-state wavefunctions have reduced density matrices with a certain simple structure, and no additional universal information can be extracted from the entanglement spectrum.
Although frequency multiplexing of information has revolutionized the field of classical communications, the color degree of freedom (DOF) has been used relatively little for quantum applications. We experimentally demonstrate a new hybrid quantum gate that transfers polarization entanglement of non-degenerate photons onto the color DOF. We create, for the first time, high quality, discretely color-entangled states (with energy bandgap up to 8.4 THz) without any filtering or postselection, and unambiguously verify and quantify the amount of entanglement (tangle, 0.611$\pm$0.009) by reconstruct…
Interacting disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons have fractional charges, are quasi-one-dimensional, and display an exponentially small gap. Our numerical computations showed that the topological entanglement entropy of these systems has a small finite but universal value, independent of the strength of the interaction and the disorder. The result that was obtained for the topological entanglement entropy shows that the disorder-free phase is critical and becomes unstable in the presence of disorder.
Symmetry protected topological phases (SPTs) have universal degeneracies in the entanglement spectrum in one dimension (1D). Here, we formulate this phenomenon in the framework of symmetry-resolved entanglement (SRE) using cohomology theory. We develop a general approach to compute entanglement measures of SPTs in any dimension and specifically SRE via a discrete path integral on multi-sheet Riemann surfaces with generalized defects. The resulting path integral is expressed in terms of group cocycles describing the topological actions of SPTs. Their cohomology classification allows to identify…
We investigate the evolution of complexity and entanglement following a quench in a one-dimensional topological system, namely the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrate that complexity can detect quantum phase transitions and shows signatures of revivals; this observation provides a practical advantage in information processing. We also show that the complexity saturates much faster than the entanglement entropy in this system, and we provide a physical argument for this. Finally, we demonstrate that complexity is a less sensitive probe of topological order, compared with measures of enta…
This paper discusses relationships between topological entanglement and quantum entanglement. Specifically, we propose that for this comparison it is fundamental to view topological entanglements such as braids as "entanglement operators" and to associate to them unitary operators that are capable of creating quantum entanglement.
Entanglement entropy in topologically ordered matter phases has been computed extensively using various methods. In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy of topological phases in two-spaces from a new perspective---the perspective of quasiparticle fluctuations. In this picture, the entanglement spectrum of a topologically ordered system is identified with the spectrum of quasiparticle fluctuations of the system, and the entanglement entropy measures the maximal quasiparticle fluctuations on the EB. As a consequence, entanglement entropy corresponds to the thermal entropy of the quasipa…
We elucidate how Chern and topological insulators fulfill an area law for the entanglement entropy. By explicit construction of a family of lattice Hamiltonians, we are able to demonstrate that the area law contribution can be tuned to an arbitrarily small value, but is topologically protected from vanishing exactly. We prove this by introducing novel methods to bound entanglement entropies from correlations using perturbation bounds, drawing intuition from ideas of quantum information theory. This rigorous approach is complemented by an intuitive understanding in terms of entanglement edge st…
Entanglement measures find frequent application in the study of topologically ordered systems, where the presence of topological order is reflected in an additional contribution to the entanglement of the system. Obtaining this topological entropy from analytical calculations or numerical simulations is generally difficult due to the fact that it is an order one correction to leading terms that scale with the size of the system. In order to distil the topological entropy, one resorts to extrapolation as a function of system size, or to clever subtraction schemes that allow to cancel out the le…
Topological phases of matter possess intricate correlation patterns typically probed by entanglement entropies or entanglement spectra. In this work, we propose an alternative approach to assessing topologically induced edge states in free and interacting fermionic systems. We do so by focussing on the fermionic covariance matrix. This matrix is often tractable either analytically or numerically and it precisely captures the relevant correlations of the system. By invoking the concept of monogamy of entanglement we show that highly entangled states supported across a system bi-partition are la…
We introduce a novel model of multipartite entanglement based on topological links, generalizing the graph/hypergraph entropy cone program. We demonstrate that there exist link representations of entropy vectors which provably cannot be represented by graphs or hypergraphs. Furthermore, we show that the contraction map proof method generalizes to the topological setting, though now requiring oracular solutions to well-known but difficult problems in knot theory.
Entanglement is a special feature of the quantum world that reflects the existence of subtle, often non-local, correlations between local degrees of freedom. In topological theories such non-local correlations can be given a very intuitive interpretation: quantum entanglement of subsystems means that there are "strings" connecting them. More generally, an entangled state, or similarly, the density matrix of a mixed state, can be represented by cobordisms of topological spaces. Using a formal mathematical definition of TQFT we construct basic examples of entangled states and compute their von N…
One-dimensional valence bond solid (VBS) states represent the simplest symmetry protected topological phases. We show that their ground state entanglement spectrum contains both topological and non-topological structures. For the $SO(3)$ symmetric VBS states with odd-integer spins, the two-fold topological degeneracy is associated with an underlying $Z_{2}\times Z_{2}$ symmetry that protects the corresponding topological phase. In general, for the $SO(2S+1)$ symmetric VBS states with integer spins $S$, the corresponding protecting symmetry is identified as the $(Z_{2}\times Z_{2})^{S}$ symmetr…
Topological entanglement entropy has been extensively used as an indicator of topologically ordered phases. We study the conditions needed for two-dimensional topologically trivial states to exhibit spurious contributions that contaminates topological entanglement entropy. We show that if the state at the boundary of a subregion is a stabilizer state, then it has a non-zero spurious contribution to the region if and only if, the state is in a non-trivial one-dimensional $G_1\times G_2$ symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) phase. However, we provide a candidate of a boundary state that has a no…
The multi-scale entanglement renormalisation ansatz (MERA) is argued to provide a natural description for topological states of matter. The case of Kitaev's toric code is analyzed in detail and shown to possess a remarkably simple MERA description leading to distillation of the topological degrees of freedom at the top of the tensor network. Kitaev states on an infinite lattice are also shown to be a fixed point of the RG flow associated with entanglement renormalization. All these results generalize to arbitrary quantum double models.
We experimentally investigate quadrature correlations between pump, signal, and idler fields in an above-threshold optical parametric oscillator. We observe new quantum correlations among the pump and signal or idler beams, as well as among the pump and a combined quadrature of signal and idler beams. A further investigation of unforeseen classical noise observed in this system is presented, which hinders the observation of the recently predicted tripartite entanglement. In spite of this noise, current results approach the limit required to demonstrate three-color entanglement.
We analyse the entanglement entropy properties of a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which displays a rich phase-space that supports non-trivial topological phases, as the chemical potential and the Zeeman term are varied. We show that the entanglement entropy and its derivatives clearly signal the topological transitions and provides a sensible signature of each topological phase. We separately analyse the contributions to the entanglement entropy that are proportional to or independent of the perimeter of the system, as a function of the Hamiltonian coup…
Symmetry-resolved entanglement is a useful tool for characterizing symmetry-protected topological states. In two dimensions, their entanglement spectra are described by conformal field theories but the symmetry resolution is largely unexplored. However, addressing this problem numerically requires system sizes beyond the reach of exact diagonalization. Here, we develop tensor network methods that can access much larger systems and determine universal and nonuniversal features in their entanglement. Specifically, we construct one-dimensional matrix product operators that encapsulate all the ent…
In this paper, we study gapped edges/interfaces in a 2+1 dimensional bosonic topological order and investigate how the topological entanglement entropy is sensitive to them. We present a detailed analysis of the Ishibashi states describing these edges/interfaces making use of the physics of anyon condensation in the context of Abelian Chern-Simons theory, which is then generalized to more non-Abelian theories whose edge RCFTs are known. Then we apply these results to computing the entanglement entropy of different topological orders. We consider cases where the system resides on a cylinder wit…
A general inequality between entanglement entropy and a number of topologically ordered states is derived, even without using the properties of the parent Hamiltonian or the formalism of topological quantum field theory. Given a quantum state $\ketψ$, we obtain an upper bound on the number of distinct states that are locally indistinguishable from $\ketψ$. The upper bound is determined only by the entanglement entropy of some local subsystems. As an example, we show that $\log N \leq 2γ$ for a large class of topologically ordered systems on a torus, where $N$ is the number of topologically pro…
A useful approach to characterize and identify quantum phase transitions lies in the concept of multipartite entanglement. In this paper, we consider well-known measures of multipartite (global) entanglement, i.e., average linear entropy of one-qubit and two-qubit reduced density matrices, in order to study topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) in the Kitaev Toric code Hamiltonian with a nonlinear perturbation. We provide an $exact$ mapping from aforementioned measures in the above model to internal energy and energy-energy correlations in the classical Ising model. Accordingly, we find …
Topological phases are characterized by their entanglement properties, which is manifest in a direct relation between entanglement spectra and edge states discovered by Li and Haldane. We propose to leverage the power of synthetic quantum systems for measuring entanglement via the Entanglement Hamiltonian to probe this relationship experimentally. This is made possible by exploiting the quasi-local structure of Entanglement Hamiltonians. The feasibility of this proposal is illustrated for two paradigmatic examples realizable with current technology, an integer quantum Hall state of non-interac…
Entanglement entropy provides a powerful characterization of two-dimensional gapped topological phases of quantum matter, intimately tied to their description by topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). Fracton topological orders are three-dimensional gapped topologically ordered states of matter, but the existence of a TQFT description for these phases remains an open question. We show that three-dimensional fracton phases are nevertheless characterized, at least partially, by universal structure in the entanglement entropy of their ground state wave functions. We explicitly compute the en…
This paper gives a criterion for detecting the entanglement of a quantum state, and uses it to study the relationship between topological and quantum entanglement. It is fundamental to view topological entanglements such as braids as entanglement operators and to associate to them unitary operators that are capable of creating quantum entanglement. The entanglement criterion is used to explore this connection. The paper discusses non-locality in the light of this criterion.
The Landau paradigm of classifying phases by broken symmetries was demonstrated to be incomplete when it was realized that different quantum Hall states could only be distinguished by more subtle, topological properties. Today, the role of topology as an underlying description of order has branched out to include topological band insulators, and certain featureless gapped Mott insulators with a topological degeneracy in the groundstate wavefunction. Despite intense focus, very few candidates for these topologically ordered "spin liquids" exist. The main difficulty in finding systems that harbo…
We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the fil…
Multi-color entangled states of light including low-loss optical fiber transmission and atomic resonance frequencies are essential resources for future quantum information network. We present the experimental achievement on the three-color entanglement generation at 852 nm, 1550 nm and 1440 nm wavelengths for optical continuous variables. The entanglement generation system consists of two cascaded non-degenerated optical parametric oscillators (NOPOs). The flexible selectivity of nonlinear crystals in the two NOPOs and the tunable property of NOPO provide large freedom for the frequency select…
We demonstrate that linear combinations of subregion entropies with canceling boundary terms, commonly used to calculate the topological entanglement entropy, may suffer from spurious nontopological contributions even in models with zero correlation length. These spurious contributions are due to a specific kind of long-range string order, and persist throughout certain subsystem symmetry-protected phases. We introduce an entropic quantity that measures the presence of such order, and hence should serve as an order parameter for the aforementioned phases.
We investigate how topological entanglement of Chern-Simons theory is captured in a string theoretic realization. Our explorations are motivated by a desire to understand how quantum entanglement of low energy open string degrees of freedom is encoded in string theory (beyond the oft discussed classical gravity limit). Concretely, we realize the Chern-Simons theory as the worldvolume dynamics of topological D-branes in the topological A-model string theory on a Calabi-Yau target. Via the open/closed topological string duality one can map this theory onto a pure closed topological A-model strin…
We study the entanglement spectrum of topological systems hosting non-Abelian anyons. Akin to energy levels of a Hamiltonian, the entanglement spectrum is composed of symmetry multiplets. We find that the ratio between different eigenvalues within one multiplet is universal and is determined by the anyonic quantum dimensions. This result is a consequence of the conservation of the total topological charge. For systems with non-Abelian topological order, this generalizes known degeneracies of the entanglement spectrum, which are hallmarks of topological states. Experimental detection of these e…
We calculate the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) for a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice generalization of Kitaev's honeycomb lattice spin model. We find that for this model TEE is not directly determined by the total quantum dimension of the system. This is in contrast to general two dimensional systems and many three dimensional models, where TEE is related to the total quantum dimension. Our calculation also provides TEE for a three-dimensional toric-code-type Hamiltonian that emerges as the effective low-energy theory for the Kitaev model in a particular limit.
Identifying entanglement-based order parameters characterizing topological systems, in particular topological superconductors and topological insulators, has remained a major challenge for the physics of quantum matter in the last two decades. Here we show that the end-to-end, long-distance, bipartite squashed entanglement between the edges of a many-body system, defined in terms of the edge-to-edge quantum conditional mutual information, is the natural nonlocal order parameter for topological superconductors in one dimension as well as in quasi one-dimensional geometries. For the Kitaev chain…
We introduce two generalizations of Kochen-Specker (KS) sets: projective KS sets and generalized KS sets. We then use projective KS sets to characterize all graphs for which the chromatic number is strictly larger than the quantum chromatic number. Here, the quantum chromatic number is defined via a nonlocal game based on graph coloring. We further show that from any graph with separation between these two quantities, one can construct a classical channel for which entanglement assistance increases the one-shot zero-error capacity. As an example, we exhibit a new family of classical channels w…
Entanglement is the essential quantum resource for a potential speed-up of information processing, as well as for sophisticated quantum communication. Quantum information networks will be required to convey information from one place to another, by using entangled light beams. Many physical systems are under consideration as building blocks, with different merits and faults, so that hybrid systems are likely to be developed. Here we present an important tool for connecting systems that share no common resonance frequencies: we demonstrate the first direct generation of entanglement among more …

We study topological properties of quasi-particle states in the non-Abelian quantum Hall states. We apply a skein-theoretic method to the Read--Rezayi state whose effective theory is the SU(2)_K Chern--Simons theory. As a generalization of the Pfaffian (K=2) and the Fibonacci (K=3) anyon states, we compute the braiding matrices of quasi-particle states with arbitrary spins. Furthermore we propose a method to compute the entanglement entropy skein-theoretically. We find that the entanglement entropy has a nontrivial contribution called the topological entanglement entropy which depends on the q…
We compute the topological entropy of the toric code models in arbitrary dimension at finite temperature. We find that the critical temperatures for the existence of full quantum (classical) topological entropy correspond to the confinement-deconfinement transitions in the corresponding Z_2 gauge theories. This implies that the thermal stability of topological entropy corresponds to the stability of quantum (classical) memory. The implications for the understanding of ergodicity breaking in topological phases are discussed.
