We prove two universality results for random tensors of arbitrary rank D. We first prove that a random tensor whose entries are N^D independent, identically distributed, complex random variables converges in distribution in the large N limit to the same limit as the distributional limit of a Gaussian tensor model. This generalizes the universality of random matrices to random tensors.
We then prove a second, stronger, universality result. Under the weaker assumption that the joint probability distribution of tensor entries is invariant, assuming that the cumulants of this invariant distribution are uniformly bounded, we prove that in the large N limit the tensor again converges in distribution to the distributional limit of a Gaussian tensor model. We emphasize that the covariance of the large N Gaussian is not universal, but depends strongly on the details of the joint distribution.
We extend the study of \emph{melonic} quartic tensor models to models with arbitrary quartic interactions. This extension requires a new version of the loop vertex expansion using several species of intermediate fields and iterated Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities. Borel summability is proven, uniformly as the tensor size $N$ becomes large. Every cumulant is written as a sum of explicitly calculated terms plus a remainder, suppressed in $1/N$. Together with the existence of the large $N$ limit of the second cumulant, this proves that the corresponding sequence of probability measures is uniformly b…
We prove that the asymptotic of the bulk local statistics in models of random lozenge tilings is universal in the vicinity of straight boundaries of the tiled domains. The result applies to uniformly random lozenge tilings of large polygonal domains on triangular lattice and to the probability measures describing the decomposition in Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of tensor products of representations of unitary groups. In a weaker form our theorem also applies to random domino tilings.
We prove the universality for the eigenvalue gap statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for band matrices, in the regime where the band width is comparable with the dimension of the matrix, $W\sim N$. All previous results concerning universality of non-Gaussian random matrices are for mean-field models. By relying on a new mean-field reduction technique, we deduce universality from quantum unique ergodicity for band matrices.
We show that the Dyson Brownian Motion exhibits local universality after a very short time assuming that local rigidity and level repulsion hold. These conditions are verified, hence bulk spectral universality is proven, for a large class of Wigner-like matrices, including deformed Wigner ensembles and ensembles with non-stochastic variance matrices whose limiting densities differ from the Wigner semicircle law.
Yang (2020a) recently showed that the Neural Tangent Kernel (NTK) at initialization has an infinite-width limit for a large class of architectures including modern staples such as ResNet and Transformers. However, their analysis does not apply to training. Here, we show the same neural networks (in the so-called NTK parametrization) during training follow a kernel gradient descent dynamics in function space, where the kernel is the infinite-width NTK. This completes the proof of the *architectural universality* of NTK behavior. To achieve this result, we apply the Tensor Programs technique: Wr…
We consider the adjacency matrix of the ensemble of Erdős-Rényi random graphs which consists of graphs on $N$ vertices in which each edge occurs independently with probability $p$. We prove that in the regime $pN \gg 1$ these matrices exhibit bulk universality in the sense that both the averaged $n$-point correlation functions and distribution of a single eigenvalue gap coincide with those of the GOE. Our methods extend to a class of random matrices which includes sparse ensembles whose entries have different variances.
We prove the edge and bulk universality of random Hermitian matrices with equi-spaced external source. One feature of our method is that we use neither a Christoffel-Darboux type formula, nor a double-contour formula, which are standard methods to prove universality results for exactly solvable models. This matrix model is an example of a biorthogonal ensemble, which is a special kind of determinantal point process whose kernel generally does not have a Christoffel-Darboux type formula or double-contour representation. Our methods may showcase how to handle universality problems for biorthogon…
We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.
We prove universality at the edge for rescaled correlation functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit $n\to +\infty$. As a corollary, we show that, after proper rescaling, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. eigenvalues of Wigner random hermitian (resp. real symmetric) matrix weakly converge to the distributions established by Tracy and Widom in G.U.E. (G.O.E.) cases.
We consider the product of two independent randomly rotated projectors. The square of its radial part turns out to be distributed as a Jacobi ensemble. We study its global and local properties in the large dimension scaling relevant to free probability theory. We establish asymptotics for one point and two point correlation functions, as well as properties of largest and smallest eigenvalues.
We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments.
We prove edge universality for a general class of correlated real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrices with arbitrary expectation. Our theorem also applies to internal edges of the self-consistent density of states. In particular, we establish a strong form of band rigidity which excludes mismatches between location and label of eigenvalues close to internal edges in these general models.
Universality of local eigenvalue statistics is one of the most striking phenomena of Random Matrix Theory, that also accounts for a lot of the attention that the field has attracted over the past 15 years. In this paper we focus on the empirical spacing distribution and its Kolmogorov distance from the universal limit. We describe new results, some analytical, some numerical, that are contained in [27]. A large part of the paper is devoted to explain basic definitions and facts of Random Matrix Theory, culminating in a sketch of the proof of a weak version of convergence for the empirical spac…
In this paper we consider Wigner random matrices -- symmetric n by n random matrices whose entries are independent identically distributed real random variables. We prove that the probability distribution of one or several eigenvalues close to the center of the spectrum does not depend on the probability distribution of the entries of the matrix and is the same as for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We make only mild smoothness assumptions on the probability distribution of the entries and assume that the probability distribution of the entries decays polynomially with sufficiently large pow…
Consider a random matrix of the form $W_n = M_n + D_n$, where $M_n$ is a Wigner matrix and $D_n$ is a real deterministic diagonal matrix ($D_n$ is commonly referred to as an external source in the mathematical physics literature). We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of $W_n$ for a general class of Wigner matrices $M_n$ and diagonal matrices $D_n$. Unlike the setting of many recent results concerning universality, the global semicircle law fails for this model. However, we can still obtain the universal sine kernel formula for the correlation functions. This demonstrate…
We consider the non-Hermitian analogue of the celebrated Wigner-Dyson-Mehta bulk universality phenomenon, i.e. that in the bulk the local eigenvalue statistics of a large random matrix with independent, identically distributed centred entries are universal, in particular they asymptotically coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble in the corresponding symmetry class. In this paper we reduce this problem to understanding a certain microscopic regime for the Hermitized resolvent in Girko's formula by showing that all other regimes are negligible.

We show that the canonical random-cluster measure associated to isoradial graphs is critical for all $q \geq 1$. Additionally, we prove that the phase transition of the model is of the same type on all isoradial graphs: continuous for $1 \leq q \leq 4$ and discontinuous for $q > 4$. For $1 \leq q \leq 4$, the arm exponents (assuming their existence) are shown to be the same for all isoradial graphs. In particular, these properties also hold on the triangular and hexagonal lattices. Our results also include the limiting case of quantum random-cluster models in $1+1$ dimensions.
The Wigner-Gaudin-Mehta-Dyson conjecture asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics of large random matrices exhibit universal behavior depending only on the symmetry class of the matrix ensemble. For invariant matrix models, the eigenvalue distributions are given by a log-gas with inverse temperature $β= 1, 2, 4$, corresponding to the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. For $β\not \in \{1, 2, 4\}$, there is no matrix model behind this model, but the statistical physics interpretation of the log-gas is still valid for all $β> 0$. The universality conjecture for invariant ensembles …
Conventionally used exponential random graphs cannot directly model weighted networks as the underlying probability space consists of simple graphs only. Since many substantively important networks are weighted, this limitation is especially problematic. We extend the existing exponential framework by proposing a generic common distribution for the edge weights. Minimal assumptions are placed on the distribution, that is, it is non-degenerate and supported on the unit interval. By doing so, we recognize the essential properties associated with near-degeneracy and universality in edge-weighted …
It has been shown by Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg that the squared singular values of products of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that admits a representation in terms of Meijer G-functions. We prove the universality of the local statistics of the squared singular values, namely, the bulk universality given by the sine kernel and the edge universality given by the Airy kernel. The proof is based on the asymptotic analysis for the double contour integral representation of…
In this paper we study the cokernels of various random integral matrix models, including random symmetric, random skew-symmetric, and random Laplacian matrices. We provide a systematic method to establish universality under very general randomness assumption. Our highlights include both local and global universality of the cokernel statistics of all these models. In particular, we find the probability that a sandpile group of an Erdos-Renyi random graph is cyclic, answering a question of Lorenzini from 2008.
We study multiplicative statistics for the eigenvalues of unitarily-invariant Hermitian random matrix models. We consider one-cut regular polynomial potentials and a large class of multiplicative statistics. We show that in the large matrix limit several associated quantities converge to limits which are universal in both the potential and the family of multiplicative statistics considered. In turn, such universal limits are described by the integro-differential Painlevé II equation, and in particular they connect the random matrix models considered with the narrow wedge solution to the KPZ eq…
In this paper, we survey some recent progress on rigorously establishing the universality of various spectral statistics of Wigner Hermitian random matrix ensembles, focusing on the Four Moment Theorem and its refinements and applications, including the universality of the sine kernel and the Central limit theorem of several spectral parameters. We also take the opportunity here to issue some errata for some of our previous papers in this area.
In this paper, we consider the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. Our main result shows that these statistics are determined by the first four moments of the distribution of the entries. As a consequence, we derive the universality of eigenvalue gap distribution and $k$-point correlation and many other statistics (under some mild assumptions) for both Wigner Hermitian matrices and Wigner real symmetric matrices.
For a large class of random matrices $A$ and vectors $b$, we show that linear systems formed from the pair $(A,b)$ are controllable with high probability. Despite the fact that minimal controllability problems are, in general, NP-hard, we establish universality results for the minimal controllability of random systems. Our proof relies on the recent developments of Nguyen-Tao-Vu concerning gaps between eigenvalues of random matrices.
We prove that for Gaussian random normal matrices the correlation function has universal behavior. Using the technique of orthogonal polynomials and identities similar to the Christoffel-Darboux formula, we find that in the limit, as the dimension of the matrix tends to infinity, the density of eigenvalues converges to a constant inside of an ellipse and to zero outside. The convergence holds locally uniformly. At the boundary, in scaled coordinates holding the distance between eigenvalues constant, we show that the density is falling off to zero like the complementary error function. The conv…
We prove strong clustering of k-point correlation functions of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions. In the course of the proof, we also obtain universal local bounds for k-point functions of zeroes of arbitrary nondegenerate Gaussian analytic functions. In the second part of the paper, we show that strong clustering yields the asymptotic normality of fluctuations of some linear statistics of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions, in particular, of the number of zeroes in measurable domains of large area. This complements our recent results from the paper "Fluctuations in random complex zeroes" (…
We show that several statistics of the number of intersections between random eigenfunctions of general eigenvalues with a given smooth curve in flat tori are universal under various families of randomness.
We study ensembles of sparse random block matrices generated from the adjacency matrix of a Erdös-Renyi random graph with $N$ vertices of average degree $Z$, inserting a real symmetric $d \times d$ random block at each non-vanishing entry. We consider some ensembles of random block matrices with rank $r < d$ and with maximal rank, $r=d$. The spectral moments of the sparse random block matrix are evaluated for $N \to \infty$, $d$ finite or infinite, and several probability distributions for the blocks (e.g. fixed trace, bounded trace and Gaussian). Because of the concentration of the probabilit…
We describe the resolvent approach for the rigorous study of the mescoscopic regime of Hermitian matrix spectra. We present results reflecting the universal behavior of the smoothed density of eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices
In this paper, we study the number of real roots of random trigonometric polynomials with iid coefficients. When the coefficients have zero mean, unit variance and some finite high moments, we show that the variance of the number of real roots is asymptotically linear in terms of the expectation; furthermore, the multiplicative constant in this linear relationship depends only on the kurtosis of the common distribution of the polynomial's coefficients. This result is in sharp contrast to the classical Kac polynomials whose corresponding variance depends only on the first two moments. Our resul…
We study the universality of the eigenvalue statistics of the covariance matrices $\frac{1}{n}M^* M$ where $M$ is a large $p\times n$ matrix obeying condition $\bf{C1}$. In particular, as an application, we prove a variant of universality results regarding the smallest singular value of $M_{p,n}$. This paper is an extension of the results in \cite{tvcovariance} from the bulk of the spectrum up to the edge.
We establish universality of cutoff for simple random walk on a class of random graphs defined as follows. Given a finite graph $G=(V,E)$ with $|V|$ even we define a random graph $ G^*=(V,E \cup E')$ obtained by picking $E'$ to be the (unordered) pairs of a random perfect matching of $V$. We show that for a sequence of such graphs $G_n$ of diverging sizes and of uniformly bounded degree, if the minimal size of a connected component of $G_n$ is at least 3 for all $n$, then the random walk on $G_n^*$ exhibits cutoff w.h.p. This provides a simple generic operation of adding some randomness to a g…
Consider $(X_{i}(t))$ solving a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations interacting through a random matrix $\mathbf J = (J_{ij})$ with independent (not necessarily identically distributed) random coefficients. We show that the trajectories of averaged observables of $(X_i(t))$, initialized from some $μ$ independent of $\mathbf J$, are universal, i.e., only depend on the choice of the distribution $\mathbf{J}$ through its first and second moments (assuming e.g., sub-exponential tails). We take a general combinatorial approach to proving universality for dynamical systems with random co…
Consider random matrices $A$, of dimension $m\times (m+n)$, drawn from an ensemble with probability density $f(\rmtr AA^\dagger)$, with $f(x)$ a given appropriate function. Break $A = (B,X)$ into an $m\times m$ block $B$ and the complementary $m\times n$ block $X$, and define the random matrix $Z=B^{-1}X$. We calculate the probability density function $P(Z)$ of the random matrix $Z$ and find that it is a universal function, independent of $f(x)$. The universal probability distribution $P(Z)$ is a spherically symmetric matrix-variate $t$-distribution. Universality of $P(Z)$ is, essentially, a c…
We present some Markovian approaches to prove universality results for some functions on the symmetric group. Some of those statistics are already studied in [Kammoun, 2018, 2020] but not the general case. We prove, in particular, that the number of occurrences of a vincular patterns satisfies a CLT for conjugation invariant random permutations with few cycles and we improve the results already known for the longest increasing subsequence. The second approach is a suggestion of a generalization to other random permutations and other sets having a similar structure than the symmetric group.
The universality phenomenon asserts that the distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrix with i.i.d. zero mean, unit variance entries does not depend on the underlying structure of the random entries. For example, a plot of the eigenvalues of a random sign matrix, where each entry is +1 or -1 with equal probability, looks the same as an analogous plot of the eigenvalues of a random matrix where each entry is complex Gaussian with zero mean and unit variance. In the current paper, we prove a universality result for sparse random n by n matrices where each entry is nonzero with probability …
The longest increasing subsequence of a random walk with mean zero and finite variance is known to be $n^{1/2 + o(1)}$. We show that this is not universal for symmetric random walks. In particular, the symmetric Ultra-fat tailed random walk has a longest increasing subsequence that is asymptotically at least $n^{0.690}$ and at most $n^{0.815}$. An exponent strictly greater than $1/2$ is also shown for the symmetric stable-$α$ distribution when $α$ is sufficiently small.
