We show how to construct, using an elementary extension of the Pinch Technique, all off-shell Green's functions of a non-Abelian gauge theory so that they are locally gauge-invariant and renormalization-group invariant (RGI), as the S-matrix is, as well as being process-independent, coupling-constant independent (dimensional transmutation), and satisfying QED-like Ward identities. We call these PT-RGI Green's functions and outline how to construct an approximate three-gluon PT-RGI vertex with three physical scales and no dependence on the renormalization point $μ$. Properties of the PT-RGI Schwinger-Dyson equations are discussed, mostly in the context of a modified form of $ϕ^3_6$. The PT-RGI property of all off-shell Green's functions, plus other work of long ago, leads to a near-realization of the old dreams of S-matrix theorists.
Through introducing a notion of renormalization of particle-number density, a simple perturbation scheme of nonequilibrium quantum-field theory is proposed. In terms of the renormalized particle-distribution functions, which characterize the system, the structure of the scheme (and then also the structure of amplitudes and reaction rates) are the same as in the equilibrium thermal field theory. Then, as an obvious consequence, the amplitudes and reaction rates computed in this scheme are free from pinch singularities due to multiple products of $δ$-functions, which inevitably present in tradit…
We study the renormalization of the fermion mixing matrix in the Standard Model and derive the constraints that must be satisfied to respect gauge invariance to all orders. We demonstrate that the prescription based on the {\it on-shell} renormalization conditions is not consistent with the Ward-Takahashi Identities and leads to gauge dependent physical amplitudes. A simple scheme is proposed that satisfies all theoretical requirements and is very convenient for practical calculations.
We discuss general theories of N scalar fields with O(N) symmetry. In addition to the standard case of linearly realized symmetry there are also examples that carry nonlinear realizations, with the topology of a cylinder $R\times S^{N-1}$ or a sphere $S^N$. We write flow equations for the theory in the second order of the derivative expansion in the background field and discuss the properties of scaling solutions with vanishing potential.
In conventional treatments, predictions from fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations cannot be fixed with certainty due to ambiguities in the choice of the renormalization scale as well as the renormalization scheme. In this paper we present a general discussion of the constraints of the renormalization group (RG) invariance on the choice of the renormalization scale. We adopt the RG based equations, which incorporate the scheme parameters, for a general exposition of RG invariance, since they simultaneously express the invariance of physical observables under both the variation of the renor…
We comment on a recent puzzle regarding renormalization group invariance of exact results in SUSY theories, and argue that a purported renormalization of the dynamical scale Λdoes not in fact occur.
A valid prediction for a physical observable from quantum field theory should be independent of the choice of renormalization scheme -- this is the primary requirement of renormalization group invariance (RGI). Satisfying scheme invariance is a challenging problem for perturbative QCD (pQCD), since a truncated perturbation series does not automatically satisfy the requirements of the renormalization group. Two distinct approaches for satisfying the RGI principle have been suggested in the literature. One is the "Principle of Maximum Conformality" (PMC) in which the terms associated with the $β…
We clarify the notion of Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) invariance in supersymmetric gauge theories, which states that the low-energy physics can be kept fixed when one changes the ultraviolet cutoff, provided appropriate changes are made to the bare coupling constants in the Lagrangian. We first pose a puzzle on how a quantum modified constraint (such as Pf(Q^i Q^j) = Λ^{2(N+1)} in SP(N) theories with N+1 flavors) can be RG invariant, since the bare fields Q^i receive wave function renormalization when one changes the ultraviolet cutoff, while we naively regard the scale Λas RG invarian…
We investigate the renormalization group flow of the Yukawa model with a fixed momentum cutoff at the leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of the fermion species. We demonstrate the scale invariance of coupling constants of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.
We construct a gravity dual for scale invariant but non-conformal field theories with a cyclic renormalization group flow. A slight modification of our construction gives a gravity dual of discretely scale invariant field theories. The underlying gravitational theory breaks the null energy condition.
The dilation invariance is studied in the framework of Epstein-Glaser approach to renormalization theory. Some analogues of the Callan-Symanzik equations are found and they are applied to the scalar field theory and to Yang-Mills models. We find the interesting result that, if all the fields of the theory have zero masses, then from purely cohomological consideration, one can obtain the anomalous terms of logarithmic type.
We formulate a renormalized running coupling expansion for the $β$--function and the potential of the renormalized $ϕ^4$--trajectory on four dimensional Euclidean space-time. Renormalization invariance is used as a first principle. No reference is made to bare quantities. The expansion is proved to be finite to all orders of perturbation theory. The proof includes a large momentum bound on the connected free propagator amputated vertices.
We review the theoretical foundations and most important physical applications of the Pinch Technique (PT). This method allows the construction of off-shell Green's functions in non-Abelian gauge theories that are independent of the gauge-fixing parameter and satisfy ghost-free Ward identities. We first present the diagrammatic formulation of the technique in QCD, deriving at one loop the gauge independent gluon self-energy, quark-gluon vertex, and three-gluon vertex, together with their Abelian Ward identities. The generalization to theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking is carried out i…
For supersymmetric gauge theories a consistent regularization scheme that preserves supersymmetry and gauge invariance is not known. In this article we tackle this problem for supersymmetric QED within the framework of algebraic renormalization. For practical calculations, a non-invariant regularization scheme may be used together with counterterms from all power-counting renormalizable interactions. From the Slavnov--Taylor identity, expressing gauge invariance, supersymmetry and translational invariance, simple symmetry conditions are derived that are important in a twofold respect: they est…
The gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) is a formulation of the exact renormalization group that keeps exact gauge invariance. GFERG can keep also modified chiral invariance. We will show that this formulation reproduces the correct axial anomaly in four dimensions.
We consider matter fields conformally coupled to a background metric and dilaton and describe in detail a quantization procedure and related renormalization group flow that preserve Weyl invariance. Even though the resulting effective action is Weyl-invariant, the trace anomaly is still present, with all its physical consequences. We discuss first the case of free matter and then extend the result to interacting matter. We also consider the case when the metric and dilaton are dynamical and gravitons enter in the loops.
We prove the renormalization group(RG) invariance of the pole mass with respect to the RG functions of the minimal subtraction(MS) scheme and illustrate this in case of the the neutral scalar field theory both in the symmetric and in the broken symmetry phase.
We show that for a SU(N) Yang-Mills theory the classical background-quantum splitting is non-trivially deformed at the quantum level by a canonical transformation with respect to the Batalin-Vilkovisky bracket associated with the Slavnov-Taylor identity of the theory. This canonical transformation acts on all the fields (including the ghosts) and antifields; it uniquely fixes the dependence on the background field of all the one-particle irreducible Green's functions of the theory at hand. The approach is valid both at the perturbative and non-perturbative level, being based solely on symmetry…
We study renormalization group flow in a non-local version of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We determine the regime in which the theory flows to a local theory in the infrared and study a possible UV completion of four-dimensional QED. In addition, we find that there exist non-local conformal theories with a one-dimensional conformal manifold and non-local deformations of QED in three dimensions that are exactly marginal. Along the way we develop methods for coupling non-local derivatives to external sources and discuss unitarity and conformal vs. scale invariance of these theories.
We show that the renormalization group beta functions in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model identically vanish in all order due to the compositeness condition. Accordingly the effective coupling constants are entirely fixed and do not run with the renormalization scale.
Field-theoretical calculations performed in an approximation scheme often present a spurious dependence of physical quantities on some unphysical parameters associated with the details of the calculation setup (such as, the renormalization scheme or, in perturbation theory, the resummation procedure). In the present article, we propose to reduce this dependence by invoking conformal invariance. Using as a benchmark the three-dimensional Ising model, we show that, within the derivative expansion at order 4, performed in the nonperturbative renormalization group formalism, the identity associate…
The conventional absence of field renormalization in the local potential approximation (LPA) --implying a zero value of the critical exponent η-- is shown to be incompatible with the logic of the derivative expansion of the exact renormalization group (RG) equation. We present a LPA with η\neq 0 that strictly does not make reference to any momentum dependence. Emphasis is made on the perfect breaking of the reparametrization invariance in that pure LPA (absence of any vestige of invariance) which is compatible with the observation of a progressive smooth restoration of that invariance on imple…
The essential elements of manifestly gauge invariant exact renormalization groups are recalled. The pros and cons of the formalism are discussed and it is argued that now is the right time to try to utilize the formalism to provide new insights into the strong coupling domain of QCD.
At zero temperature, the Lorentz invariance is strictly preserved in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. This property ensures that the velocity of massless fermions is not renormalized by the gauge interaction. At finite temperature, however, the Lorentz invariance is explicitly broken by the thermal fluctuation. The longitudinal component of gauge interaction becomes short-ranged due to thermal screening, whereas the transverse component remains long-ranged because of local gauge invariance. The transverse gauge interaction leads to singular corrections to the fermion self-energy and …
A nonperturbative approach to the vacuum polarization for quantized fermions in external vector potentials is discussed. It is shown that by a suitable choice of counterterms the vacuum polarization phase is both gauge and renormalization independent, within a large class of nonperturbative renormalizations.
We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can …
We present a procedure of differential renormalization at the one loop level which avoids introducing unnecessary renormalization constants and automatically preserves abelian gauge invariance. The amplitudes are expressed in terms of a basis of singular functions. The local terms appearing in the renormalization of these functions are determined by requiring consistency with the propagator equation. Previous results in abelian theories, with and without supersymmetry, are discussed in this context.
A new version of differential renormalization is presented. It is based on pulling out certain differential operators and introducing a logarithmic dependence into diagrams. It can be defined either in coordinate or momentum space, the latter being more flexible for treating tadpoles and diagrams where insertion of counterterms generates tadpoles. Within this version, gauge invariance is automatically preserved to all orders in Abelian case. Since differential renormalization is a strictly four-dimensional renormalization scheme it looks preferable for application in each situation when dimens…
With the present trend in experimental particle physics of probing yet shorter distances and with the requirement on the theoretical side of renormalizability, conformal invariance becomes an attractive symmetry for particle interactions. That is because conformal field theories form a large class of massless no-scale renormalizable quantum field theories. It is generally believed, however, that renormalization breaks conformal invariance and with the absence of a reported success to find a conformally invariant renormalization scheme, an alternative approach is followed in this thesis. We beg…
Approximation only by derivative (or more generally momentum) expansions, combined with reparametrization invariance, turns the continuous renormalization group for quantum field theory into a set of partial differential equations which at fixed points become non-linear eigenvalue equations for the anomalous scaling dimension $η$. We review how these equations provide a powerful and robust means of discovering and approximating non-perturbative continuum limits. Gauge fields are briefly discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the rôle of reparametrization invariance, and the convergence of…
A role of the renormalization group invariance in calculations of the ground state energy for models with confined fermion fields is discussed. The case of the (1+1)D MIT bag with massive fermions is studied in detail.
The complete renormalization procedure of a general N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in the Wess-Zumino gauge is presented, using the regulator free ``algebraic renormalization'' procedure. Both gauge invariance and supersymmetry are included into one single BRS invariance. The form of the general nonabelian anomaly is given. Furthermore, it is explained how the gauge BRS and the supersymmetry functional operators can be extracted from the general BRS operator. It is then shown that the supersymmetry operators actually belong to the closed, finite, Wess-Zumino superalgebra when their action is …
We discuss the realization of conformal invariance for Wilson actions using the formalism of the exact renormalization group. This subject has been studied extensively in the recent works of O. J. Rosten. The main purpose of this paper is to reformulate Rosten's formulas for conformal transformations using a method developed earlier for the realization of any continuous symmetry in the exact renormalization group formalism. The merit of the reformulation is simplicity and transparency via the consistent use of equation-of-motion operators. We derive equations that imply the invariance of the W…
We study general two-dimensional sigma-models which do not possess manifest Lorentz invariance. We show how demanding that Lorentz invariance is recovered as an emergent on-shell symmetry constrains these sigma-models. The resulting actions have an underlying group-theoretic structure and resemble Poisson-Lie T-duality invariant actions. We consider the one-loop renormalization of these models and show that the quantum Lorentz anomaly is absent. We calculate the running of the couplings in general and show, with certain non-trivial examples, that this agrees with that of the T-dual models obta…
Semiclassical Hamiltonian field theory is investigated from the axiomatic point of view. A notion of a semiclassical state is introduced. An "elementary" semiclassical state is specified by a set of classical field configuration and quantum state in this external field. "Composed" semiclassical states viewed as formal superpositions of "elementary" states are nontrivial only if the Maslov isotropic condition is satisfied; the inner product of "composed" semiclassical states is degenerate. The mathematical proof of Poincare invariance of semiclassical field theory is obtained for "elementary" a…
This work is dedicated to the study of both large-$N$ and perturbative quantum behaviors of Lifshitz nonlinear sigma models with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ in 2+1 dimensions. We discuss renormalization and renormalization group aspects with emphasis on the possibility of emergence of Lorentz invariance at low energies. Contrarily to the perturbative expansion, where in general the Lorentz symmetry restoration is delicate and may depend on stringent fine-tuning, our results provide a more favorable scenario in the large-$N$ framework. We also consider supersymmetric extension in this non…
The simple consequences of the renormalization group invariance in calculations of the ground state energy for models of confined quantum fields are discussed. The case of (1+1)D MIT quark bag model is considered in detail.
Using the shadow dependent decoupled Slavnov-Taylor identities associated to gauge invariance and supersymmetry, we discuss the renormalization of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory and of its coupling to gauge-invariant operators. We specify the method for the determination of non-supersymmetric counterterms that are needed to maintain supersymmetry.
We study renormalization group flows in strongly interacting field theories with fermions that correspond to transitions between a theory without Lorentz invariance at high energies down to a theory with approximate Lorentz symmetry in the infrared. Holographic description of the strong coupling is used. The emphasis is made on emergence of chiral fermions in the low-energy theory.
We show that the running of gravitational couplings, together with a suitable identification of the renormalization group scale can give rise to modified dispersion relations for massive particles. This result seems to be compatible with both the frameworks of effective field theory with Lorentz invariance violation and deformed special relativity. The phenomenological consequences depend on which of the frameworks is assumed. We discuss the nature and strength of the available constraints for both cases and show that in the case of Lorentz invariance violation, the theory would be strongly co…
We study renormalization group flows in the Lifshitz-like $N$-flavour four fermi model discussed in 0905.2928. In the large-$N$ limit, a nontrivial flow occurs in only one of all possible marginal couplings and one relevant coupling, which provides the scale for Lorentz invariance violations. We discuss in detail the phase diagram and RG flows in the space of couplings, which includes the Lifshitz fixed point, the free field fixed point and a new fixed point characterized by $z=1$ scaling and a violation of Lorentz invariance, which cannot be tuned away by adjusting a parameter. In the broken …
The scale invariance of the coupling constant in the induced gauge theory due to its compositeness condition is demonstrated in the renormalization group flow of the finite-cutoff gauge theory at the leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of the matter fermion species.
String vacua for non critical strings satisfying the requirements of Zig-Zag invariance are constructed. The Liouville mode is shown to play the rôle of scale in the Renormalization Group operation. Differences and similarities with the D-brane near horizon approach to non supersymmetric gauge theories are discussed as well.
Weyl consistency conditions are a powerful tool to study the irreversibility properties of the renormalization group. We apply this formalism to non-relativistic theories in 2 spatial dimensions with boost invariance and dynamical exponent z=2. Different possibilities are explored, depending on the structure of the gravitational background used as a source for the energy-momentum tensor.
The gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) is an exact renormalization group motivated by the Yang--Mills gradient flow and its salient feature is a manifest gauge invariance. We generalize this GFERG, originally formulated for the pure Yang--Mills theory, to vector-like gauge theories containing fermion fields, keeping the manifest gauge invariance. For the chiral symmetry we have two options: one possible formulation preserves the conventional form of the chiral symmetry and the other simpler formulation realizes the chiral symmetry in a modified form à la Ginsparg--Wilson. We wor…
We consider the gauge invariance of the standard Yang-Mills model in the framework of the causal approach of Epstein-Glaser and Scharf and determine the generic form of the anomalies. The method used is based Epstein-Glaser approach to renormalization theory. In the case of quantum electrodynamics we obtain quite easily the absence of anomalies in all orders.
Using Wilson renormalization group, we show that if no integrated vector operator of scaling dimension $-1$ exists, then scale invariance implies conformal invariance. By using the Lebowitz inequalities, we prove that this necessary condition is fulfilled in all dimensions for the Ising universality class. This shows, in particular, that scale invariance implies conformal invariance for the three-dimensional Ising model.
In these notes the exact renormalization group formulation of the scalar theory is briefly reviewed. This regularization scheme is then applied to supersymmetric theories. In case of a supersymmetric gauge theory it is also shown how to recover gauge invariance, broken by the introduction of the infrared cutoff.
