Graphene physisorbed on a metal has its characteristic Dirac cones preserved in the band-structure, but the Fermi level of the system is shifted due to the interaction with the substrate. Based on density functional calculations with van der Waals corrections, we present a method to determine the position of the Dirac point with respect to the Fermi level from the measured scanning tunneling spectra (STS). It has been demonstrated that the dips in both simulated local density of states and in the observed dI/dV profiles are indeed the fingerprints of the Dirac points. The type and the level of doping can be then inferred directly from the STS data without any additional experimental technique. Test calculations of graphene on a Cu(111) substrate have shown that the predicted position of the Dirac point is in close proximity to the experimental value reported in the recent studies. Moreover, simulations for graphene on a Pt(111) surface allow us to explain the apparent contradictions in the state-of-the-art experimental works.
We report the synthesis of single and bi layer graphene films by low pressure chemical vapor deposition technique on Cu and Au substrates. The as grown films were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The large lateral area graphene deposited on Cu can easily be transferred on Si SiO2. In the case of Au substrate both the adsorption and diffusion-precipitation leads to the growth of graphene.
Contributing to the need of new graphene nanoribbon (GNR) structures that can be synthesized with atomic precision, we have designed a reactant that renders chiral (3,1) - GNRs after a multi-step reaction including Ullmann coupling and cyclodehydrogenation. The nanoribbon synthesis has been successfully proved on different coinage metals, and the formation process, together with the fingerprints associated to each reaction step, has been studied combining scanning tunnelling microscopy, core-level spectroscopy and density functional calculations. In addition to the GNR chiral edge structure, t…
Graphene, a monolayer of carbon atoms packed into a two-dimensional crystal structure, attracted intense attention owing to its unique structure and optical, electronic properties. Recent advances in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have led to the batch production of high quality graphene on metal foils. However, further applications are required in the way these graphenes are transferred from their growth substrates onto the target substrate. Here, we report a sublimable carrier method that allows the graphene to be transferred with high quality onto arbitrary substrates, including semiconduc…
Fermi Level Tuning of Epitaxial Sb2Te3 Thin Films on Graphene by Regulating Intrinsic Defects and Substrate Transfer Doping
Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate how to tune the doping of epitaxial graphene from p to n by exploiting the structural changes that occur spontaneously on the Ge surface upon thermal annealing. Furthermore, using first principle calculations we build a model that successfully reproduces the experimental observations. Since the ability to modify graphene electronic properties is of fundamental importance when it comes to applications, our results provide an important contribution towards the integration of graphene with conven…
Sub-monolayer physical layer deposition of Zn on Ag(111) substrate at room temperature is investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. We identified an original Zn highly-anisotropic structure in the shape of finger-like inserted dendrite in front of Zn monolayer growth. On the basis of STM observations, a mechanism of inserted dendritic growth and a mechanism of its transition to layered growth are proposed.
Controlling hydrocarbon transport and electron beam induced deposition on single layer graphene: toward atomic scale synthesis in the scanning transmission electron microscope
Graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) were synthesized by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of propane (C3H8) employing Ni (salen) powder without the introduction of a substrate. The graphitic nature of the GNFs was examined by an X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that GNFs were stacked on top of one another and had a high aspect ratio. Transmission electron microscopy studies suggested that the GNFs were made up of a number of crystalline graphene layers, some of which were even single crystalline as evident from the selected area diffraction pattern. …
Contrast stability and "stripe" formation in Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy imaging of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite: The role of STM-tip orientations
Soot nucleation is one of the most complex and debated steps of the soot formation process in combustion. In this work, we used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) to probe morphological and electronic properties of incipient soot particles formed right behind the flame front of a lightly sooting laminar premixed flame of ethylene and air. Particles were thermophoretically sampled on an atomically flat gold film on a mica substrate. High-resolution STM images of incipient soot particles were obtained for the first time showing the morphology of sub-5 nm incipient soot pa…
