In this paper, we give a new proof for the fact that the distributional weak solutions and the viscosity solutions of the $p$-Laplace equation $-\diver(\abs{Du}^{p-2}Du)=0$ coincide. Our proof is more direct and transparent than the original one by Juutinen, Lindqvist and Manfredi \cite{jlm}, which relied on the full uniqueness machinery of the theory of viscosity solutions. We establish a similar result also for the solutions of the non-homogeneous version of the $p$-Laplace equation.
In this manuscript we study the relation between viscosity and weak solutions for non-homogeneous p-Laplace equations with lower order term depending on $x$, $u$ and $\nabla u$. More precisely, we prove that any locally bounded viscosity solution constitutes a weak solution, extending previous results by Juutinen, Lindqvist and Manfredi on the homogeneous case, and Julin and Juutinen for a linear right hand side. Moreover, we provide a converse statement in the full case under extra assumptions on the regularity of the solutions.
We show that viscosity solutions to the normalized $p(x)$-Laplace equation coincide with distributional weak solutions to the strong $p(x)$-Laplace equation when $p$ is Lipschitz and $\inf p>1$. This yields $C^{1,α}$ regularity for the viscosity solutions of the normalized $p(x)$-Laplace equation. As an additional application, we prove a Radó-type removability theorem.
We derive regularity estimates for viscosity solutions to the parabolic normalized p-Laplace. By using approximation methods and scaling arguments for the normalized p-parabolic operator, we show that the gradient of bounded viscosity solutions is locally asymptotically Lipschitz continuous when $p$ is sufficiently close to 2. In addition, we establish regularity estimates in Sobolev spaces.
Motivated by recent results regarding the equivalence of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the Laplace operator in the case of simply connected regions, the present paper takes a step further and provides a similar equivalence between the above mentioned problems in the case of planar doubly-connected regions. The equivalence means that solving any of these problems leads by an explicit formula to a solution of the other problem. In addition, suffcient conditions guaranteeing the uniform Holder continuity of the higher order partial derivatives of the solutions to the Neumann problem are …
We consider an initial-boundary value problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation. We prove the equivalence of two notions of weak solutions, viscosity solutions and distributional solutions.
We establish the equivalence between weak and viscosity solutions for non-homogeneous $p(x)$-Laplace equations with a right-hand side term depending on the spatial variable, the unknown, and its gradient. We employ inf- and sup-convolution techniques to state that viscosity solutions are also weak solutions, and comparison principles to prove the converse. The new aspects of the $p(x)$-Laplacian compared to the constant case are the presence of $\log$-terms and the lack of the invariance under translations.
We establish the equivalence between the notions of weak and viscosity solutions for non-homogeneous equations whose main operator is the fractional p-Laplacian and the lower order term depends on $x$, $u$ and $D_s^p u$, being the last one a type of fractional derivative.
In this paper, we study different notions of solutions of nonlocal and nonlinear equations of fractional $p$-Laplace type $${\rm P.V.} \int_{\mathbb R^n}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^{p-2}(u(x)-u(y))}{|x-y|^{n+sp}}\,dy = 0.$$ Solutions are defined via integration by parts with test functions, as viscosity solutions or via comparison. Our main result states that for bounded solutions, the three different notions coincide.
We study the relationship of viscosity and weak solutions to the equation \[ \smash{\partial_{t}u-Δ_{p}u=f(Du)} \] where $p>1$ and $f\in C(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ satisfies suitable assumptions. Our main result is that bounded viscosity supersolutions coincide with bounded lower semicontinuous weak supersolutions. Moreover, we prove the lower semicontinuity of weak supersolutions when $p\geq2$.
We present a new proof for the equivalence of potential theoretic weak solutions and viscosity solutions to the $\texttt{p}(\cdot)$-Laplace equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The proof of the equivalence in the variable exponent case in Euclidean space was first given by Juutinen, Lukkari, and Parviainen (2010) and extended the equivalence of potential theoretic weak solutions and viscosity solutions to the $\texttt{p}$-Laplace equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$, given by Juutinen, Lindqvist, and Manfredi (2001). In both the fixed exponent case and the variable exponent case, the main argument is based on th…
The parabolic normalized p-Laplace equation is studied. We prove that a viscosity solution has a time derivative in the sense of Sobolev belonging locally to $L^2$.
We establish the equivalence between weak and viscosity solutions to the nonhomogeneous double phase equation with lower-order term $$ -{\rm div}(|Du|^{p-2}Du+a(x)|Du|^{q-2}Du)=f(x,u,Du),\quad 1<p\le q<\infty, a(x)\ge0. $$ We find some appropriate hypotheses on the coefficient $a(x)$, the exponents $p, q$ and the nonlinear term $f$ to show that the viscosity solutions with {\em a priori} Lipschitz continuity are weak solutions of such equation by virtue of the $\inf$($\sup$)-convolution techniques. The reverse implication can be concluded through comparison principles. Moreover, we verify that…
We investigate the different notions of solutions to the double-phase equation $$ -\dive(|Du|^{p-2}Du+a(x)|Du|^{q-2}Du)=0, $$ which is characterized by the fact that both ellipticity and growth switch between two different types of polynomial according to the position. We introduce the $\mathcal{A}_{H(\cdot)}$-harmonic functions of nonlinear potential theory, and then show that $\mathcal{A}_{H(\cdot)}$-harmonic functions coincide with the distributional and viscosity solutions, respectively. This implies that the distributional and viscosity solutions are exactly the same.
We prove the local gradient Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions to the inhomogeneous normalized $p(x)$-Laplace equation $$ -Δu-(p(x)-2)\frac{\left\langle D^{2}uDu,Du\right\rangle }{\left|Du\right|^{2}} = f(x), $$ where $p$ is Lipschitz continuous, $\inf p>1$, and $f$ is continuous and bounded.
We study the p-Laplace equation in the plane and prove that the mean value property holds directly for the solutions themselves. This removes the need to interpret the formula in the viscosity sense via test functions. The method is based on the hodograph representation.
We formulate a stochastic differential game in continuous time that represents the unique viscosity solution to a terminal value problem for a parabolic partial differential equation involving the normalized $p(x,t)$-Laplace operator. Our game is formulated in a way that covers the full range $1<p(x,t)<\infty$. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of viscosity solutions to our equation in the whole space under suitable assumptions.
We consider interior Hölder regularity of the spatial gradient of viscosity solutions to the normalized $p(x,t)$-Laplace equation $$ u_t=\left(δ_{ij}+(p(x,t)-2)\frac{u_i u_j}{|Du|^2}\right)u_{ij} $$ with some suitable assumptions on $p(x,t)$, which arises naturally from a two-player zero-sum stochastic differential game with probabilities depending on space and time.
We show that value functions of a certain time-dependent control problem in $Ω\times (0,T)$, with a continuous payoff $F$ on the parabolic boundary, converge uniformly to the viscosity solution of the parabolic dominative $p$-Laplace equation $$2(n+p)u_t=Δu+(p-2)λ_n(D^2 u),$$ with the boundary data $F$. Here $2\leq p< \infty$, and $λ_n(D^2 u)$ is the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian $D^2 u$.
In this paper we show that the maximal viscosity solution of a class of quasi-convex Hamilton--Jacobi equations, coupled with inequality constraints on the boundary, can be recovered by taking the limit as $p\to\infty$ in a family of Finsler $p$-Laplace problems. The approach also enables us to provide an optimal solution to a Beckmann-type problem in general Finslerian setting and allows recovering a bench of known results based on the Evans--Gangbo technique.
This paper concerns value functions of time-dependent tug-of-war games. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of value functions and verify that these game values satisfy a dynamic programming principle. Using the arguments in the proof of existence of game values, we can also deduce asymptotic behavior of game values when $T \to \infty$. Furthermore, we investigate boundary regularity for game values. Thereafter, based on the regularity results for value functions, we deduce that game values converge to viscosity solutions of the normalized parabolic $p$-Laplace equation.
We study radial viscosity solutions to the equation \[ -\ |Du\ |^{q-2}Δ_{p}^{N}u=f(\ |x\ |)\quad\text{in }B_{R}\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}, \] where $f\in C[0,R)$, $p,q\in(1,\infty)$ and $N\geq2$. Our main result is that $u(x)=v(\ |x\ |)$ is a bounded viscosity supersolution if and only if $v$ is a bounded weak supersolution to $-κΔ_{q}^{d}v=f$ in $(0,R)$, where $κ>0$ and $Δ_{q}^{d}$ is heuristically speaking the radial $q$-Laplacian in a fictitious dimension $d$. As a corollary we obtain the uniqueness of radial viscosity solutions. However, the full uniqueness of solutions remains an open problem.
In this paper we prove the equivalence between some known notions of solutions to the eikonal equation and more general analogs of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations in complete and rectifiably connected metric spaces. The notions considered are that of curve-based viscosity solutions, slope-based viscosity solutions, and Monge solutions. By using the induced intrinsic (path) metric, we reduce the metric space to a length space and show the equivalence of these solutions to the associated Dirichlet boundary problem. Without utilizing the boundary data, we also localize our argument and directly pro…
We study the unique existence of weak solutions for initial boundary value problems associated with different class of fractional diffusion equations including variable order, distributed order and multiterm fractional diffusion equations. So far, different definitions of weak solutions have been considered for these class of problems. This includes definition of solutions in a variational sense and definition of solutions from properties of their Laplace transform in time. The goal of the present article is to unify these two approaches by showing the equivalence of these two definitions. Suc…
By employing a Carnot parabolic maximum principle, we show existence-uniqueness of viscosity solutions to a class of equations modeled on the parabolic infinite Laplace equation in Carnot groups. We show stability of solutions within the class and examine the limit as t goes to infinity.
In this paper, we study Bessel operators and Bessel Laplace equations studied by Weinstein, Huber, and related the harmonic function theory introduced by Muckenhoupt--Stein. We establish the Moser type inequality for these harmonic functions, which is missing in this setting before. We then apply it to give a direct proof for the equivalence of characterizations of the Hardy spaces associated to Bessel operator via non-tangential maximal function and radial maximal function defined in terms of the Poisson semigroup.
Suppose $Ω\Subset \mathbb R^2$ and $f\in BV_{loc}(Ω)\cap C^0(Ω)$ with $|f|>0$ in $Ω$. Let $u\in C^0(Ω)$ be a viscosity solution to the inhomogeneous $\infty$-Laplace equation $$ -Δ_{\infty} u :=-\frac12\sum_{i=1}^2(|Du|^2)_iu_i= -\sum_{i,j=1}^2u_iu_ju_{ij} =f \quad {\rm in}\ Ω. $$ The following are proved in this paper. (i) For $ α> 3/2$, we have $|Du|^α\in W^{1,2}_{loc}(Ω)$, which is (asymptotic) sharp when $ α\to 3/2$. Indeed, the function $w(x_1,x_2)=-x_1^ {4/3} $ is a viscosity solution to $-Δ_\infty w=\frac{4^3}{3^4}$ in $\mathbb R^2$. For any $p> 2$, $|Dw|^α\notin W^{1,p}_{loc}(\mathbb R…
In this paper we prove a Hölder regularity estimate for viscosity solutions of inhomogeneous equations governed by the infinite Laplace operator relative to a frame of vector fields.
In this paper, we consider non-homogeneous fractional equations in Orlicz spaces, with a source depending on the spatial variable, the unknown function, and its fractional gradient. The latter is adapted to the Orlicz framework. The main contribution of the article is to establish the equivalence between weak and viscosity solutions for such equations.
The mixed boundary value problem for a compressible Stokes system of partial differential equations in a bounded domain is reduced to two different systems of segregated direct Boundary Integral Equations (BDIEs) expressed in terms of surface and volume parametrix-based potential type operators. Equivalence of the BDIE systems to the mixed BVP and invertibility of the matrix operators associated with the BDIE systems are proved in appropriate Sobolev spaces.
We study unbounded (viscosity) supersolutions of the Evolutionary p-Laplace Equation in the slow diffusion case. The supersolutions fall into two widely different classes, depending on whether they are locally summable to the power p-2 or not. Also the Porous Medium Equation is studied.
We study unbounded "supersolutions" of the Evolutionary $p$-Laplace equation with slow diffusion. They are the same functions as the viscosity supersolutions. A fascinating dichotomy prevails: either they are locally summable to the power $p-1+\tfrac{n}{p}-0$ or not summable to the power $p-2+0.$
We consider a general form of a parabolic equation that generalizes both the standard parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the normalized version that has been proposed in stochastic game theory. We establish an equivalence between this equation and the standard $p$-parabolic equation posed in a fictitious space dimension, valid for radially symmetric solutions. This allows us to find suitable explicit solutions for example of Barenblatt type, and as a consequence we settle the exact asymptotic behaviour of the Cauchy problem even for nonradial data. We also establish the asymptotic behaviour in…
Let $1\le p\le\infty$. We show that a function $u\in C(\mathbb R^N)$ is a viscosity solution to the normalized $p$-Laplace equation $Δ_p^n u(x)=0$ if and only if the asymptotic formula $$ u(x)=μ_p(\ve,u)(x)+o(\ve^2) $$ holds as $\ve\to 0$ in the viscosity sense. Here, $μ_p(\ve,u)(x)$ is the $p$-mean value of $u$ on $B_\ve(x)$ characterized as a unique minimizer of $$ \inf_{\la\in\RR}\nr u-\la\nr_{L^p(B_\ve(x))}. $$ This kind of asymptotic mean value property (AMVP) extends to the case $p=1$ previous (AMVP)'s obtained when $μ_p(\ve,u)(x)$ is replaced by other kinds of mean values. The natural d…
We study and compare two concepts for weak solutions to semilinear parabolic path-dependent partial differential equations (PPDEs). The first is that of mild solutions as it appears, e.g., in the log-Laplace functionals of historical superprocesses. The aim of this paper is to show that mild solutions are also solutions in a viscosity sense. This result is motivated by the fact that mild solutions can provide value functions and optimal strategies for problems of stochastic optimal control. Since unique mild solutions exist under weak conditions, we obtain as a corollary a general existence re…
