We consider some models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, namely the polynuclear growth model and the totally/partially asymmetric simple exclusion process. For these models, in the limit of large time t, universality of fluctuations has been previously obtained. In this paper we consider the convergence to the limiting distributions and determine the (non-universal) first order corrections, which turn out to be a non-random shift of order t^{-1/3} (of order 1 in microscopic units). Subtracting this deterministic correction, the convergence is then of order t^{-2/3}. We also determine the strength of asymmetry in the exclusion process for which the shift is zero. Finally, we discuss to what extend the discreteness of the model has an effect on the fitting functions.
We examine height-height correlations in the transient growth regime of the 2+1 Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, with a particular focus on the {\it spatial covariance} of the underlying two-point statistics, higher-dimensional analog of the 1+1 KPZ Class Airy$_1$ process. Making comparison to AFM kinetic roughening data in 2d organic thin films, we use our universal 2+1 KPZ spatial covariance to extract key scaling parameters for this experimental system. Additionally, we explore the i) height, ii) local roughness, and iii) extreme value distributions characteristic of these olig…
We conjecture the universal probability distribution at large time for the one-point height in the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic growth universality class, with initial conditions interpolating from any one of the three main classes (droplet, flat, stationary) on the left, to another on the right, allowing for drifts and also for a step near the origin. The result is obtained from a replica Bethe ansatz calculation starting from the KPZ continuum equation, together with a "decoupling assumption" in the large time limit. Some cases are checked to be equivalent to previously known resu…
For stochastic growth models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class in 1+1 dimensions, fluctuations grow as t^{1/3} during time t and the correlation length at a fixed time scales as t^{2/3}. In this note we discuss the scale of time correlations. For a representant of the KPZ class, the polynuclear growth model, we show that the space-time is non-trivially fibred, having slow directions with decorrelation exponent equal to 1 instead of the usual 2/3. These directions are the characteristic curves of the PDE associated to the surface's slope. As a consequence, previously proven results for spa…
We consider a large class of $1+1$-dimensional continuous interface growth models and we show that, in both the weakly asymmetric and the intermediate disorder regimes, these models converge to Hopf-Cole solutions to the KPZ equation.
We introduce a model of effective conformal quantum field theory in dimension $d=1+1$ coupled to stochastic noise, where Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class fluctuations can be observed. The analysis of the quantum dynamics of the scaling operators reduces to the study of random trajectories in a random environment, modeled by Brownian vector fields. We use recent results on random walks in random environments to calculate the time-dependent entanglement entropy of a subsystem interval, starting from a factorized state. We find that the fluctuations of the entropy in the large deviation regime are…
Time correlations for KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions are reconsidered. We discuss flat, curved, and stationary initial conditions and are interested in the covariance of the height as a function of time at a fixed point on the substrate. In each case the power laws of the covariance for short and long times are obtained. They are derived from a variational problem involving two independent Airy processes. For stationary initial conditions we derive an exact formula for the stationary covariance with two approaches: (1) the variational problem and (2) deriving the covariance of the time-integrate…
We obtain several exact results for universal distributions involving the maximum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola and plus a Brownian motion, with applications to the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic growth universality class. This allows to obtain (i) the universal limit, for large time separation, of the two-time height correlation for droplet initial conditions, e.g. $C_{\infty} = \lim_{t_2/t_1 \to +\infty} \overline{h(t_1) h(t_2)}^c/\overline{h(t_1)^2}^c$, with $C_{\infty} \approx 0.623$, as well as conditional moments, which quantify ergodicity breaking in the time evoluti…
For stationary KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions the height fluctuations are governed by the Baik-Rains distribution. Using the totally asymmetric single step growth model, alias TASEP, we investigate height fluctuations for a general class of spatially homogeneous random initial conditions. We prove that for TASEP there is a one-parameter family of limit distributions, labeled by the diffusion coefficient of the initial conditions. The distributions are defined through a variational formula. We use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain their numerical plots. Also discussed is the connection to the six…
The speed of growth for a particular stochastic growth model introduced by Borodin and Ferrari in [Comm. Math. Phys. 325 (2014), 603-684], which belongs to the KPZ anisotropic universality class, was computed using multi-time correlations. The model was recently generalized by Toninelli in [arXiv:1503.05339] and for this generalization the stationary measure is known but the time correlations are unknown. In this note, we obtain algebraic and combinatorial proofs for the expression of the speed of growth from the prescribed dynamics.
We consider the fluctuations in the stochastic growth of a one-dimensional interface of height $h(x,t)$ described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We study the joint probability distribution function (JPDF) of the interface heights at two times $t_1$ and $t_2>t_1$, with droplet initial conditions at $t=0$. In the limit of large times this JPDF is expected to become a universal function of the time ratio $t_2/t_1$, and of the (properly scaled) heights $h(x,t_1)$ and $h(x,t_2)$. Using the replica Bethe ansatz method for the KPZ equation, in [J. Stat. Mech. (2017) 053212] we o…
Obtaining the exact multi-time correlations for one-dimensional growth models described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is presently an outstanding open problem. Here, we study the joint probability distribution function (JPDF) of the height of the KPZ equation with droplet initial conditions, at two different times $t_1<t_2$, in the limit where both times are large and their ratio $t_2/t_1$ is fixed. This maps to the JPDF of the free energies of two directed polymers with two different lengths and in the same random potential. Using the replica Bethe ansatz (RBA) method, w…
One of the main difficulties in proving convergence of discrete models of surface growth to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in dimensions higher than one is that the correct way to take a scaling limit, so that the limit is nontrivial, is not known in a rigorous sense. To understand KPZ growth without being hindered by this issue, this article introduces a notion of "local KPZ behavior", which roughly means that the instantaneous growth of the surface at a point decomposes into the sum of a Laplacian term, a gradient squared term, a noise term that behaves like white noise, and a remain…

Stochastic interface dynamics serve as mathematical models for diverse time-dependent physical phenomena: the evolution of boundaries between thermodynamic phases, crystal growth, random deposition... Interesting limits arise at large space-time scales: after suitable rescaling, the randomly evolving interface converges to the solution of a deterministic PDE (hydrodynamic limit) and the fluctuation process to a (in general non-Gaussian) limit process. In contrast with the case of $(1+1)$-dimensional models, there are very few mathematical results in dimension $(d+1), d\ge2$. As far as growth m…
There has been much success in describing the limiting spatial fluctuations of growth models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. A proper rescaling of time should introduce a non-trivial temporal dimension to these limiting fluctuations. In one-dimension, the KPZ class has the dynamical scaling exponent $z=3/2$, that means one should find a universal space-time limiting process under the scaling of time as $t\,T$, space like $t^{2/3} X$ and fluctuations like $t^{1/3}$ as $t\to\infty$. In this paper we provide evidence for this belief. We prove that under certain hypotheses, gr…
A series of recent works focused on two-dimensional interface growth models in the so-called Anisotropic KPZ (AKPZ) universality class, that have a large-scale behavior similar to that of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation. In agreement with the scenario conjectured by D. Wolf (1991), in all known AKPZ examples the function $v(ρ)$ giving the growth velocity as a function of the slope $ρ$ has a Hessian with negative determinant ("AKPZ signature"). While up to now negativity was verified model by model via explicit computations, in this work we show that it actually has a simple geometric origin in …
The domino-shuffling algorithm can be seen as a stochastic process describing the irreversible growth of a $(2+1)$-dimensional discrete interface. Its stationary speed of growth $v_{\mathtt w}(ρ)$ depends on the average interface slope $ρ$, as well as on the edge weights $\mathtt w$, that are assumed to be periodic in space. We show that this growth model belongs to the Anisotropic KPZ class: one has $\det [D^2 v_{\mathtt w}(ρ)]<0$ and the height fluctuations grow at most logarithmically in time. Moreover, we prove that $D v_{\mathtt w}(ρ)$ is discontinuous at each of the (finitely many) smoot…
We study the atypically large deviations of the height $H \sim {\cal O}(t)$ at the origin at late times in $1+1$-dimensional growth models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We present exact results for the rate functions for the discrete single step growth model, as well as for the continuum KPZ equation in a droplet geometry. Based on our exact calculation of the rate functions we argue that models in the KPZ class undergo a third order phase transition from a strong coupling to a weak coupling phase, at late times.
This article studies the inhomogeneous geometric polynuclear growth model, the distribution of which is related to Schur functions. We explain a method to derive its distribution functions in both space-like and time-like directions, focusing on the two-time distribution. Asymptotics of the two-time distribution in the KPZ-scaling limit is then considered, extending to two times several single-time distributions in the KPZ universality class.
We consider the KPZ equation in one space dimension with narrow wedge initial condition, $h(x,t=0)=- |x|/δ$, $δ\ll 1$. Based on previous results for the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process with step initial conditions, we obtain a determinantal formula for the one-point distribution of the solution $h(x,t)$ valid for any $x$ and $t>0$. The corresponding distribution function converges in the long time limit, $t\to\infty$, to the Tracy-Widom distribution. The first order correction is a shift of order $t^{-1/3}$. We provide numerical computations based on the exact formula.
Consider a deterministically growing surface of any dimension, where the growth at a point is an arbitrary nonlinear function of the heights at that point and its neighboring points. Assuming that this nonlinear function is monotone, invariant under the symmetries of the lattice, equivariant under constant shifts, and twice continuously differentiable, it is shown that any such growing surface approaches a solution of the deterministic KPZ equation in a suitable space-time scaling limit.
Stochastic growth processes in dimension $(2+1)$ were conjectured by D. Wolf, on the basis of renormalization-group arguments, to fall into two distinct universality classes, according to whether the Hessian $H_ρ$ of the speed of growth $v(ρ)$ as a function of the average slope $ρ$ satisfies $\det H_ρ>0$ ("isotropic KPZ class") or $\det H_ρ\le 0$ ("anisotropic KPZ (AKPZ)" class). The former is characterized by strictly positive growth and roughness exponents, while in the AKPZ class fluctuations are logarithmic in time and space. It is natural to ask (a) if one can exhibit interesting growth m…
We study an anisotropic variant of the two-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, that is relevant to describe growth of vicinal surfaces and has Gaussian, logarithmically rough, stationary states. While the folklore belief (based on one-loop Renormalization Group) is that the equation has the same scaling behaviour as the (linear) Edwards-Wilkinson equation, we prove that, on the contrary, the non-linearity induces the emergence of a logarithmic super-diffusivity. This phenomenon is similar in flavour to the super-diffusivity for two-dimensional fluids and driven particle systems.
The KPZ fixed point is a scaling invariant Markov process which arises as the universal scaling limit of a broad class of models of random interface growth in one dimension, the one-dimensional KPZ universality class. In this survey we review the construction of the KPZ fixed point and some of the history that led to it, in particular through the exact solution of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a special solvable model in the class. We also explain how the construction reveals the KPZ fixed point as a stochastic integrable system, and how from this it follows that its finite …
These notes are based on a talk given at the 2018 Arizona School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics. We give a comprehensive introduction to the KPZ universality class, a conjectured class of stochastic process with local interactions related to random growth processes in $1+1$ dimensions. We describe some of the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class such as scaling exponents and limiting statistics. In particular, we aim to extract the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class by understanding the KPZ stochastic partial differential equation by a special disc…
We unveil a remarkable connection between the sine-Gordon quantum field theory and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) growth equation. We find that the non-relativistic limit of the two point correlation function of the sine-Gordon theory is related to the generating function of the height distribution of the KPZ field with droplet initial conditions, i.e. the directed polymer free energy with two endpoints fixed. As shown recently, the latter can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant which in the large time separation limit converges to the GUE Tracy-Widom cumulative distribution. Possible applic…
These notes are based on lectures delivered by the authors at a Langeoog seminar of SFB/TR12 "Symmetries and universality in mesoscopic systems" to a mixed audience of mathematicians and theoretical physicists. After a brief outline of the basic physical concepts of equilibrium and nonequilibrium states, the one-dimensional simple exclusion process is introduced as a paradigmatic nonequilibrium interacting particle system. The stationary measure on the ring is derived and the idea of the hydrodynamic limit is sketched. We then introduce the phenomenological Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation a…
Recently, Quastel and Remenik \cite{QRKP} [arXiv:1908.10353] found a remarkable relation between some solutions of the finite time Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. Using this relation we obtain the large deviations at large time and at short time for the KPZ equation with droplet initial conditions, and at short time with half-Brownian initial conditions. It is consistent with previous results and allows to obtain sub-leading corrections, as well as results at intermediate time. In addition, we find that the appropriate generating function associ…
We construct a family of stochastic growth models in 2+1 dimensions, that belong to the anisotropic KPZ class. Appropriate projections of these models yield 1+1 dimensional growth models in the KPZ class and random tiling models. We show that correlation functions associated to our models have determinantal structure, and we study large time asymptotics for one of the models. The main asymptotic results are: (1) The growing surface has a limit shape that consists of facets interpolated by a curved piece. (2) The one-point fluctuations of the height function in the curved part are asymptoticall…
The $(d+1)$-dimensional KPZ equation is the canonical model for the growth of rough $d$-dimensional random surfaces. A deep mathematical understanding of the KPZ equation for $d=1$ has been achieved in recent years, and the case $d\ge 3$ has also seen some progress. The most physically relevant case of $d=2$, however, is not very well-understood mathematically, largely due to the renormalization that is required: in the language of renormalization group analysis, the $d=2$ case is neither ultraviolet superrenormalizable like the $d=1$ case nor infrared superrenormalizable like the $d\ge 3$ cas…
We study the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) growth equation in one dimension with a noise variance $c(t)$ depending on time. We find that for $c(t)\propto t^{-α}$ there is a transition at $α=1/2$. When $α>1/2$, the solution saturates at large times towards a non-universal limiting distribution. When $α<1/2$ the fluctuation field is governed by scaling exponents depending on $α$ and the limiting statistics are similar to the case when $c(t)$ is constant. We investigate this problem using different methods: (1) Elementary changes of variables mapping the time dependent case to variants of the KPZ equ…
We study height fluctuations of interfaces in the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class, growing at different speeds in the left half and the right half of space. Carrying out simulations of the discrete polynuclear growth model with two different growth rates, combined with the standard setting for the droplet, flat, and stationary geometries, we find that the fluctuation properties at and near the boundary are described by the KPZ half-space problem developed in the theoretical literature. In particular, in the droplet case, the distribution at the boundary is given by the larg…
We determine a $q\to 1$ limit of the two-dimensional $q$-Whittaker driven particle system on the torus studied previously in [Corwin-Toninelli, arXiv:1509.01605]. This has an interpretation as a $(2+1)$-dimensional stochastic interface growth model, that is believed to belong to the so-called anisotropic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. This limit falls into a general class of two-dimensional systems of driven linear SDEs which have stationary measures on gradients. Taking the number of particles to infinity we demonstrate Gaussian free field type fluctuations for the stationary measure. Consi…
We study the directed polymer (DP) of length $t$ in a random potential in dimension 1+1 in the continuum limit, with one end fixed and one end free. This maps onto the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth equation in time $t$, with flat initial conditions. We use the Bethe Ansatz solution for the replicated problem which is an attractive bosonic model. The problem is more difficult than the previous solution of the fixed endpoint problem as it requires regularization of the spatial integrals over the Bethe eigenfunctions. We use either a large fixed system length or a small finite slope KPZ initial cond…
We study the multi-time distribution in a discrete polynuclear growth model or, equivalently, in directed last-passage percolation with geometric weights. A formula for the joint multi-time distribution function is derived in the discrete setting. It takes the form of a multiple contour integral of a block Fredholm determinant. The asymptotic multi-time distribution is then computed by taking the appropriate KPZ-scaling limit of this formula. This distribution is expected to be universal for models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.
Brownian motion is a continuum scaling limit for a wide class of random processes, and there has been great success in developing a theory for its properties (such as distribution functions or regularity) and expanding the breadth of its universality class. Over the past twenty five years a new universality class has emerged to describe a host of important physical and probabilistic models (including one dimensional interface growth processes, interacting particle systems and polymers in random environments) which display characteristic, though unusual, scalings and new statistics. This class …
Domains of attraction are identified for the universality classes of one-point asymptotic fluctuations for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with general initial data. The criterion is based on a large deviation rate function for the rescaled initial data, which arises naturally from the Hopf-Cole transformation. This allows us, in particular, to distinguish the domains of attraction of curved, flat, and Brownian initial data, and to identify the boundary between the curved and flat domains of attraction, which turns out to correspond to square root initial data. The distribution of the a…
The two-time distribution gives the limiting joint distribution of the heights at two different times of a local 1D random growth model in the curved geometry. This distribution has been computed in a specific model but is expected to be universal in the KPZ universality class. Its marginals are the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. In this paper we study two limits of the two-time distribution. The first, is the limit of long time separation when the quotient of the two times goes to infinity, and the second, is the short time limit when the quotient goes to zero.
