Group classification of classes of mKdV-like equations with time-dependent coefficients is carried out. The usage of equivalence transformations appears a crucial point for the exhaustive solution of the problem. We prove that all the classes under consideration are normalized. This allows us to formulate the classification results in three ways: up to two kinds of equivalence (which are generated by transformations from the corresponding equivalence groups and all admissible point transformations) and using no equivalence. A simple way of the construction of exact solutions of mKdV-like equations using equivalence transformations is described.
In this paper, we prove that the nonlocal complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation introduced by Ablowitz and Musslimani [Nonlinearity, 29, 915-946 (2016)] is gauge equivalent to a spin-like model. From the gauge equivalence, one can see that there exists significant difference between the nonlocal complex mKdV equation and the classical complex mKdV equation. Through constructing the Darboux transformation(DT) for nonlocal complex mKdV equation, a variety of exact solutions including dark soliton, W-type soliton, M-type soliton and periodic solutions are derived.
Recent concept of integrable nonholonomic deformation found for the KdV equation is extended to the mKdV equation and generalized to the AKNS system. For the deformed mKdV equation we find a matrix Lax pair, a novel two-fold integrable hierarchy and exact N-soliton solutions exhibiting unusual accelerating motion. We show that both the deformed KdV and mKdV systems possess infinitely many generalized symmetries, conserved quantities and a recursion operator.
We present reciprocal transformations for the spectral problems of Korteveg de Vries (KdV) and modified Korteveg de Vries (mKdV) equations. The resulting equations, RKdV (reciprocal KdV) and RmKdV (reciprocal mKdV), are connected through a transformation that combines both Miura and reciprocal transformations. Lax pairs for RKdV and RmKdV are straightforwardly obtained by means of the aforementioned reciprocal transformations. We have also identified the classical Lie symmetries for the Lax pairs of RKdV and RmKdV. Non-trivial similarity reductions are computed and they yield non-autonomous or…
In this article we continue to develop the theory of generating symmetries for integrable equations. A technique for computation of generating symmetries using Maple is presented. The technique is based on the standard symmetry method. By using it we find generating symmetries for the KdV, Camassa-Holm, mKdV, sine-Gordon, Boussinesq, associated Degasperis-Procesi and associated Novikov equations.
We found a new symplectic structure and a recursion operator for the Sasa--Satsuma equation widely used in nonlinear optics, $$ p_t=p_{xxx}+6 p q p_x+3 p (p q)_x,\quad q_t=q_{xxx}+6 p q q_x+3 q (p q)_x, $$ along with an integro-differential substitution linking this system to a third-order generalized symmetry of the complex sine-Gordon II system $$ u_{xy}=\frac{v u_x u_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k u,\qquad v_{xy}=\frac{u v_x v_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k v, $$ where $c$ and $k$ are arbitrary constants. Combining these two results yields a highly nonlocal hereditary recursion …
We classify the Lie symmetries of variable coefficient Gardner equations (called also the combined KdV-mKdV equations). In contrast to the particular results presented in Molati and Ramollo (2012) we perform the exhaustive group classification. It is shown that the complete result can be achieved using either the gauging of arbitrary elements of class by the equivalence transformations or the method of mapping between classes. As by-product of the second approach the complete group classification of a class of variable coefficient mKdV equations with forcing term is derived. Advantages of the …
We explore systematically a rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transforms with matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems for both focusing and defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity. Using a suitable uniformization variable, the direct and inverse scattering problems are proposed on a complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface. For the direct scattering problem, the analyticities, symmetries and asymptotic behaviors of the Jost solutions and scattering matrix, and discrete spectra are established. The inverse proble…
The N=1 supersymmetric modified Korteweg-de Vries (SmKdV) system is transformed to a system of coupled bosonic equations with the bosonization approach. The bosonized SmKdV (BSmKdV) passes the Painlevé test and allows a set of Bäcklund transformation (BT) by truncating the series expansions of the solutions about the singularity manifold. The traveling wave solutions of the BSmKdV system are obtained using the mapping and deformation method. Some special types of exact solutions for the BSmKdV system are found with the solutions and symmetries of the usual mKdV equation. In the meanwhile, the …
We identify the self-similarity limit of the second flow of $sl(N)$ mKdV hierarchy with the periodic dressing chain thus establishing % a connection to $A^{(1)}_{N-1}$ invariant Painlevé equations. The $A^{(1)}_{N-1}$ Bäcklund symmetries of dressing equations and Painlevé equations are obtained in the self-similarity limit of gauge transformations of the mKdV hierarchy realized as zero-curvature equations on the loop algebra $\widehat{sl}(N)$ endowed with a principal gradation.
A moving frame formulation of non-stretching geometric curve flows in Euclidean space is used to derive a 1+1 dimensional hierarchy of integrable SO(3)-invariant vector models containing the Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin model as well as a model given by a spin-vector version of the mKdV equation. These models describe a geometric realization of the NLS hierarchy of soliton equations whose bi-Hamiltonian structure is shown to be encoded in the Frenet equations of the moving frame. This derivation yields an explicit bi-Hamiltonian structure, recursion operator, and constants of motion for each …
A conservation law theorem stated by N. Ibragimov along with its subsequent extensions are shown to be a special case of a standard formula that uses a pair consisting of a symmetry and an adjoint-symmetry to produce a conservation law through a well-known Fréchet derivative identity. Also, the connection of this formula (and of Ibragimov's theorem) to the standard action of symmetries on conservation laws is explained, which accounts for a number of major drawbacks that have appeared in recent work using the formula to generate conservation laws. In particular, the formula can generate trivia…
We consider a class of variable coefficient Burgers equations in 2+1 dimensions and make use of their equivalence group to give a complete symmetry classification up to equivalence. Equivalence group is also applied to pick out the most general equation transformable to its constant coefficient form. The infinite-dimensional symmetry is used to transform the equation to a one-dimensional one.
In the recent paper by Kudryashov [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat., 2009, V.14, 3507-3529] seven common errors in finding exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations were listed and discussed in detail. We indicate two more common errors concerning the similarity (equivalence with respect to point transformations) and linearizability of differential equations and then discuss the first of them. Classes of generalized KdV and mKdV equations with variable coefficients are used in order to clarify our conclusions. We investigate admissible point transformations in classes of genera…
The definition of Q-conditional symmetry for one PDE is correctly generalized to a special case of systems of PDEs and involutive families of operators. The notion of equivalence of Q-conditional symmetries under a group of local transformation is introduced. Using this notion, all possible single Q-conditional symmetry operators are classified for the n-dimensional (n >= 2) linear heat equation and for the Euler equations describing the motion of an incompressible ideal fluid.
A systematic and unified approach to transformations and symmetries of general second order linear parabolic partial differential equations is presented. Equivalence group is used to derive the Appell type transformations, specifically Mehler's kernel in any dimension. The complete symmetry group classification is re-performed. A new criterion which is necessary and sufficient for reduction to the standard heat equation by point transformations is established. A similar criterion is also valid for the equations to have a four- or six-dimensional symmetry group (nontrivial symmetry groups). In …
We carry out the group classification of the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The equivalence group of this class is found by the algebraic method. Using algebraic techniques, we construct additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of Lie-symmetry extensions, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group.
We show that the so-called hidden potential symmetries considered in a recent paper [Gandarias M., Physica A, 2008, V.387, 2234-2242] are ordinary potential symmetries that can be obtained using the method introduced by Bluman and collaborators. In fact, these are simplest potential symmetries associated with potential systems which are constructed with single conservation laws having no constant characteristics. Furthermore we classify the conservation laws for classes of porous medium equations and then using the corresponding conserved (potential) systems we search for potential symmetries.…
We apply Cartan's method of equivalence to find a Bäcklund autotransformation for the tangent covering of the universal hierarchy equation. The transformation provides a recursion operator for symmetries of this equation.
Potential equivalence transformations (PETs) are effectively applied to a class of nonlinear diffusion-convection equations. For this class all possible potential symmetries are classified and a theorem on connection of them with point ones via PETs is also proved. It is shown that the known non-local transformations between equations under consideration are nothing but PETs. Action of PETs on sets of exact solutions of a fast diffusion equation is investigated.
Group classification of a class of nonlinear fin equations is carried out exhaustively. Additional equivalence transformations and conditional equivalence groups are also found. They allow to simplify results of classification and further applications of them. The derived Lie symmetries are used to construct exact solutions of truly nonlinear equations for the class under consideration. Nonclassical symmetries of the fin equations are discussed. Adduced results amend and essentially generalize recent works on the subject [M. Pakdemirli and A.Z. Sahin, Appl. Math. Lett., 2006, V.19, 378-384; A.…
The fast diffusion equation $u_t=(u^{-1}u_x)_x$ is investigated from the symmetry point of view in development of the paper by Gandarias [Phys. Lett. A 286 (2001) 153-160]. After studying equivalence of nonclassical symmetries with respect to a transformation group, we completely classify the nonclassical symmetries of the corresponding potential equation. As a result, new wide classes of potential nonclassical symmetries of the fast diffusion equation are obtained. The set of known exact non-Lie solutions are supplemented with the similar ones. It is shown that all known non-Lie solutions of …
The group classification of a class of variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with exponential nonlinearities is carried out up to both the equivalence generated by the corresponding generalized equivalence group and the general point equivalence. The set of admissible transformations of this class is exhaustively described via finding the complete family of maximal normalized subclasses and associated conditional equivalence groups. Limit processes between variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with power nonlinearities and those with exponential nonlinearities are simul…
Universal bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of group-invariant (multicomponent) soliton equations are derived from non-stretching geometric curve flows $\map(t,x)$ in Riemannian symmetric spaces $M=G/H$, including compact semisimple Lie groups $M=K$ for $G=K\times K$, $H={\rm diag} G$. The derivation of these soliton hierarchies utilizes a moving parallel frame and connection 1-form along the curve flows, related to the Klein geometry of the Lie group $G\supset H$ where $H$ is the local frame structure group. The soliton equations arise in explicit form from the induced flow on the frame components o…
We study possible Lie and non-classical reductions of multidimensional wave equations and the special classes of possible reduced equations - their symmetries and equivalence classes. Such investigation allows to find many new conditional and hidden symmetries of the original equations.
We determine, by hierarchy, dependencies between higher order linear symmetries which occur when generating them using recursion operators. Thus, we deduce a formula which gives the number of independent generalized symmetries (basis) of several orders. We construct a basis for conservation laws (with respect to the group admitted by the system of differential equation) and hence generate infinite conservation laws in each equivalence class.
We consider a class of generalized Kuznetsov--Zabolotskaya--Khokhlov (gKZK) equations and determine its equivalence group, which is then used to give a complete symmetry classification of this class. The infinite-dimensional symmetry is used to reduce such equations to (1+1)-dimensional PDEs. Special attention is paid to group-theoretical properties of a class of generalized dispersionless KP (gdKP) or Zabolotskaya--Khokhlov equations as a subclass of gKZK equations. The conditions are determined under which a gdKP equation is invariant under a Lie algebra containing the Virasoro algebra as a …
