These notes give a mathematical introduction to two seemingly unrelated topics: (i) quantum spin systems and their cycle and loop representations, due to Tóth and Aizenman-Nachtergaele; (ii) coagulation-fragmentation stochastic processes. These topics are nonetheless related, as we argue that the lengths of cycles and loops satisfy an effective coagulation-fragmentation process. This suggests that their joint distribution is Poisson-Dirichlet. These ideas are far from being proved, but they are backed by several rigorous results, notably of Dyson-Lieb-Simon and Schramm.
We estimate the critical temperature of a family of quantum spin systems on regular trees of large degree. The systems include the spin-$\frac12$ XXZ model and the spin-1 nematic model. Our formula is conjectured to be valid for large-dimensional cubic lattices. Our method of proof uses a probabilistic representation in terms of random loops.
We study a class of quantum spin systems that includes the $S=\tfrac12$ Heisenberg and XY-models, and prove that two-point correlations exhibit exponential decay in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The field is not necessarily constant, it may be random, and it points in the same direction. Our proof is entirely probabilistic and it relies on a random-loop-representation of the correlation functions, on stochastic domination, and on first-passage percolation.
We review random loop representations for the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg models, that are due to Toth (ferromagnet) and Aizenman-Nachtergaele (antiferromagnet). These representations can be extended to models that interpolate between the two Heisenberg models, such as the quantum XY model. We discuss the relations between long-range order of the quantum spins and the size of the loops. Finally, we describe conjectures about the joint distribution of the lengths of macroscopic loops, and of symmetry breaking.
In this paper we discuss the uniqueness of the unitary representations of the non commutative Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. We show that, apart from a critical line for the non commutative position and momentum parameters, the Stone-von Neumann theorem still holds, which implies uniqueness of the unitary representation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra.
We juxtapose two approaches to the representations of the super-Heisenberg group. Physical one, sometimes called concrete approach, based on the super-wave functions depending on the anti-commuting variables, yielding the harmonic superanalysis and recently developed strict theory of unitary representations of the nilpotent super Lie groups covering the unitary representations of the super-Heisenberg group.
Spin wave theory is a key ingredient in our comprehension of quantum spin systems, and is used successfully for understanding a wide range of magnetic phenomena, including magnon condensation and stability of patterns in dipolar systems. Nevertheless, several decades of research failed to establish the validity of spin wave theory rigorously, even for the simplest models of quantum spins. A rigorous justification of the method for the three-dimensional quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet at low temperatures is presented here. We derive sharp bounds on its free energy by combining a bosonic formulat…
This paper studies how differentiable representations of certain subsemigroups of the Weyl-Heisenberg group may be obtained in suitably constructed rigged Hilbert spaces. These semigroup representations are induced from a continuous unitary representation of the Weyl-Heisenberg group in a Hilbert space. Aspects of the rigged Hilbert space formulation of time asymmetric quantum mechanics are also investigated within the context of the results developed here.
In a way paralleling the recently accepted non-Hermitian version of quantum mechanics in its Schrödinger representation (working often with the innovative and heuristically productive concept of ${\cal PT}-$symmetry), it is demonstrated that it is also possible to construct an analogous non-Hermitian version of quantum mechanics in its Heisenberg representation.
We present the explicit expressions for the matrix product operator (MPO) representation for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain. The bond dimension of the MPO grows linearly with the locality of the charges. The MPO has more simple form than the local charges themselves, and their Catalan tree patterns naturally emerge from the matrix products. The MPO representation of local conserved quantities is generalized to the integrable $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ invariant spin chain.
We consider a reducible unitary representation of Heisenberg-Weyl group in a tensor product of two Hilbert spaces. A non-commutative operator graph generated by this representation is introduced. It is shown that spectral projections of unitaries in the representation are anticliques (quantum error-correcting codes) for this graph. The obtained codes are appeared to be linear envelopes of entangled vectors.
We introduce and study a new class of algebras, which we name \textit{quantum generalized Heisenberg algebras} and denote by $\mathcal{H}_q (f,g)$, related to generalized Heisenberg algebras, but allowing more parameters of freedom, so as to encompass a wider range of applications and include previously studied algebras, such as (generalized) down-up algebras. In particular, our class now includes the enveloping algebra of the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra and its $q$-deformation, neither of which can be realized as a generalized Heisenberg algebra. This paper focuses mostly on the cl…
Quantum symmetries that leave invariant physical transition probabilities are described by projective representations of Lie groups. The mathematical theory of projected representations for topologically connected Lie groups is reviewed and applied to the inhomogeneous symplectic group ISp(2n). The projective representations are given in terms of the ordinary unitary representations of the central extension of the group with respect to its first homotopy group direct product with its second cohomology group. The second cohomology group of ISp(2n) is the one dimensional abelian group and the ce…
The Weyl algebra (W_{2m}[h]; *) is the algebra generated by u=(u_1,...,u_m,v_1,.....,v_m) over C with the fundamental commutation relation [u_i,v_j]=-ihδ_{ij}, where h is a positive constant. The Heisenberg algebra (\Cal H_{2m}[nu];*) is the algebra given by regarding the scalar parameter h in the Weyl algebra W_{2m}[h] to be a generator nu which commutes with all others.
We investigate and review how Fourier transform is involved in the analysis of a twisted group algebra $L^1(G, σ)$ for $G=\widehatΓ\times Γ$ and $σ:G\times G \to \mathbb{T}$ 2- cocycle where $Γ$ is a locally compact abelian group and $\widehatΓ$ its Pontryagin dual. By weaving the Schrödinger representation and Fourier transform, we construct the dual equivalence bimodule of the Heisenberg bimodule generated by the dual Schrödinger representation and observe several relations between them including the application of noncommutative solitons.
The unitary irreducible representations of a Lie group defines the Hilbert space on which the representations act. If this Lie group is a physical quantum dynamical symmetry group, this Hilbert space is identified with the physical quantum state space. The eigenvalue equations for the representation of the set of Casimir invariant operators define the field equations of the system. The Poincare group is the archetypical example with the unitary representations defining the Hilbert space of relativistic particle states and the Klein-Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell equations are obtained from the represe…
Numerous Lie supergroups do not admit superunitary representations except the trivial one, e.g., Heisenberg and orthosymplectic supergroups in mixed signature. To avoid this situation, we introduce in this paper a broader definition of superunitary representation, relying on a new definition of Hilbert superspace. The latter is inspired by the notion of Krein space and was developed initially for noncommutative supergeometry. For Heisenberg supergroups, this new approach yields a smooth generalization, whatever the signature, of the unitary representation theory of the classical Heisenberg gro…
In its most general formulation a quantum kinematical system is described by a Heisenberg group; the "configuration space" in this case corresponds to a maximal isotropic subgroup. We study irreducible models for Heisenberg groups based on compact maximal isotropic subgroups. It is shown that if the Heisenberg group is 2-regular, but the subgroup is not, the "vacuum sector" of the irreducible representation exhibits a fermionic structure. This will be the case, for instance, in a quantum mechanical model based on the 2-adic numbers with a suitably chosen isotropic subgroup. The formulation in …
We investigate the quantization in the Heisenberg representation of a model which represents a simplification of the Hopfield model for dielectric media, where the electromagnetic field is replaced by a scalar field $ϕ$ and the role of the polarization field is played by a further scalar field $ψ$. The model, which is quadratic in the fields, is still characterized by a nontrivial physical content, as the physical particles correspond to the polaritons of the standard Hopfield model of condensed matter physics. Causality is also taken into account and a discussion of the standard interaction r…
We describe generally deformed Heisenberg algebras in one dimension. The condition for a generalized Leibniz rule is obtained and solved. We analyze conditions under which deformed quantum-mechanical problems have a Fock-space representation. One solution of these conditions leads to a q-deformed oscillator already studied by Lorek et al., and reduces to the harmonic oscillator only in the infinite-momentum frame. The other solution leads to the Calogero model in ordinary quantum mechanics, but reduces to the harmonic oscillator in the absence of deformation.
In the spirit of geometric quantisation we consider representations of the Heisenberg(--Weyl) group induced by hypercomplex characters of its centre. This allows to gather under the same framework, called p-mechanics, the three principal cases: quantum mechanics (elliptic character), hyperbolic mechanics and classical mechanics (parabolic character). In each case we recover the corresponding dynamic equation as well as rules for addition of probabilities. Notably, we are able to obtain whole classical mechanics without any kind of semiclassical limit h->0. Keywords: Heisenberg group, Kirillov'…
This paper addresses a new characterization of Sudarshan's diagonal representation of the density matrix elements $ρ(z',z)$, derivedfrom $(q;l,λ)-$deformed boson coherent states. The induced $ρ(z',z)$ self-reproducing property with the associated self-reproducing kernel $K(z',z)$ is computed and analyzed. An explicit construction of novel classes of generalized continuous $(q;l,λ)-$Hermite polynomials is provided with the corresponding recursion relations and exact resolution of the moment problems giving their orthogonality weight functions. Besides, the Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz quantization o…
We study the weighted version of the interchange process where a permutation receives weight $θ^{\#\mathrm{cycles}}$. For $θ=2$ this is Tóth's representation of the quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet on the complete graph. We prove, for $θ>1$, that large cycles appear at `low temperature'.
We develop a geometric representation for the ground state of the spin-1/2 quantum XXZ ferromagnetic chain in terms of suitably weighted random walks in a two-dimensional lattice. The path integral model so obtained admits a genuine classical statistical mechanics interpretation with a translation invariant Hamiltonian. This new representation is used to study the interface ground states of the XXZ model. We prove that the probability of having a number of down spins in the up phase decays exponentially with the sum of their distances to the interface plus the square of the number of down spin…
Representations of CCR algebras in spaces of entire functions are classified on the basis of isomorphisms between the Heisenberg CCR algebra A_H and star algebras of holomorphic operators. To each representations of such algebras, satisfying a regularity and a reality condition, one can associate isomorphisms and inner products so that they become Krein star representations of A_H, with the gauge transformations implemented by a continuous U(1) group of Krein isometries. Conversely, any holomorphic Krein representation of A_H, having the gauge transformations implemented as before and no null …
Given a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over a field of characteristic zero $k$, let $μ(\mathfrak{g})=\min\{\dim π: π\text{is a faithful representation of}\mathfrak{g}\}$. Let $\mathfrak{h}_{m}$ be the Heisenberg Lie algebra of dimension $2m+1$ over $k$ and let $k[t]$ be the polynomial algebra in one variable. Given $m\in\mathbb{N}$ and $p\in k[t]$, let $\mathfrak{h}_{m,p}=\mathfrak{h}_m\otimes k[t]/(p)$ be the current Lie algebra associated to $\mathfrak{h}_m$ and $k[t]/(p)$, where $(p)$ is the principal ideal in $k[t]$ generated by $p$. In this paper we prove that $ mu(\mathfrak{h}_{m,p}) = m °p …
The general construction of self-adjoint configuration space representations of the Heisenberg algebra over an arbitrary manifold is considered. All such inequivalent representations are parametrised in terms of the topology classes of flat U(1) bundles over the configuration space manifold. In the case of Riemannian manifolds, these representations are also manifestly diffeomorphic covariant. The general discussion, illustrated by some simple examples in non relativistic quantum mechanics, is of particular relevance to systems whose configuration space is parametrised by curvilinear coordinat…
Using a left multiplication defined on a right quaternionic Hilbert space, linear self-adjoint momentum operators on a right quaternionic Hilbert space are defined in complete analogy with their complex counterpart. With the aid of the so-obtained position and momentum operators, we study the Heisenberg uncertainty principle on the whole set of quaternions and on a quaternionic slice, namely on a copy of the complex plane inside the quaternions. For the quaternionic harmonic oscillator, the uncertainty relation is shown to saturate on a neighborhood of the origin in the case we consider the wh…
We discuss a fine tuning of the co- and contra-variant transforms through construction of specific fiducial and reconstructing vectors. The technique is illustrated on three different forms of induced representations of the Heisenberg group. The covariant transform provides intertwining operators between pairs of representations. In particular, we obtain the Zak transform as an induced covariant transform intertwining the Schrödinger representation on $\mathsf{L}_2(\mathbb{R})$ and the lattice (nilmanifold) representation on $\mathsf{L}_2\big(\mathbb{T}^2\big)$. Induced covariant transforms in…
This paper treats mathematically some problems in p-adic quantum mechanics. We first deal with p-adic symplectic group corresponding to the symmetry on the classical phase space. By the filtrations of isotropic subspaces and almost self-dual lattices in the p-adic symplectic vector space, we explicitly give the expressions of parabolic subgroups, maximal compact subgroups and corresponding Iwasawa decompositions of some symplectic groups. For a triple of Lagrangian subspaces, we associated it with a quadratic form whose Hasse invariant is calculated. Next we study the various equivalent realiz…
We study the representation theory of the N=1 super Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra at level zero, which extends the previous work on the Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra arXiv:math/0201314, arXiv:1405.1707 and arXiv:1703.00531 to the super case. We calculated all characters of irreducible highest weight representations by investigating certain Fock space representations. Quite surprisingly, we found that the maximal submodules of certain Verma modules are generated by subsingular vectors. The formulas for singular and subsingular vectors are obtained using screening operators appearing i…
It is shown that the quantum mechanics of a charged particle moving in a uniform magnetic field in the plane (Landau) or on a planar lattice (Peierls) is described in all detail by the projective representation theory of the "euclidean" group of the appropriate configuration space. In the Landau case, a detailed description of the state space as well as the determination of the correct Hamiltonian follows from the properties of the real Heisenberg group, especially the fact that it has an essentially unique irreducible representation. In the Peierls case, the corresponding groups are infinite …

We study infinite dimensional generalisations of the Heisenberg doubles of the Borel half of $U_q(sl(2))$ and of $U_q(osp(1|2))$ and find associated canonical elements which satisfy pentagon equation. The former reproduces the canonical element, expressed using the Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm, which has been found by Kashaev to be realised within quantised Teichmüller theory, while for the latter we show that it corresponds to an operator from quantised super Teichmüller theory. We study infinite dimensional representations of those two Heisenberg doubles and, using an algebra homomorphism b…
The first mathematically consistent exact equations of quantum gravity in the Heisenberg representation and Hamilton gauge are obtained. It is shown that the path integral over the canonical variables in the Hamilton gauge is mathematically equivalent to the operator equations of quantum theory of gravity with canonical rules of quantization of the gravitational and ghost fields. In its operator formulation, the theory can be used to calculate the graviton S-matrix as well as to describe the quantum evolution of macroscopic system of gravitons in the non-stationary Universe or in the vicinity …
We introduce a generalization of the Heisenberg algebra which is written in terms of a functional of one generator of the algebra, $f(J_0)$, that can be any analytical function. When $f$ is linear with slope $θ$, we show that the algebra in this case corresponds to $q$-oscillators for $q^2 = \tan θ$. The case where $f$ is a polynomial of order $n$ in $J_0$ corresponds to a $n$-parameter deformed Heisenberg algebra. The representations of the algebra, when $f$ is any analytical function, are shown to be obtained through the study of the stability of the fixed points of $f$ and their composed fu…
This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1405.1707. We present certain new applications and generalizations of the free field realization of the twisted Heisenberg-Virasoro algebra ${\mathcal H}$ at level zero. We find explicit formulas for singular vectors in certain Verma modules. A free field realization of self-dual modules for ${\mathcal H}$ is presented by combining a bosonic construction of Whittaker modules from arXiv:1409.5354 with a construction of logarithmic modules for vertex algebras. As an application, we prove that there exists a non-split self-extension of irreducible self-dual m…
A symmetry in quantum mechanics is described by the projective representations of a Lie symmetry group that transforms between physical quantum states such that the square of the modulus of the states is invariant. The Heisenberg commutation relations, that are fundamental to quantum mechanics, must be valid in all of these physical states. This paper shows that the maximal quantum symmetry group, whose projective representations preserve the Heisenberg commutation relations in this manner, is the inhomogeneous symplectic group. The projective representations are equivalent to the unitary repr…
Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, and the solution of the quantum inverse scattering problem for local spins, we obtain multiple integral representations of the $n$-point correlation functions of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-$1 \over 2$ chain in a constant magnetic field. For zero magnetic field, this result agrees, in both the massless and massive (anti-ferromagnetic) regimes, with the one obtained from the q-deformed KZ equations (massless regime) and the representation theory of the quantum affine algebra ${\cal U}_q (\hat{sl}_2)$ together with the corner transfer matrix approach (massive…
The quantum phase leads to projective representations of symmetry groups in quantum mechanics. The projective representations are equivalent to the unitary representations of the central extension of the group. A celebrated example is Wigner's formulation of special relativistic quantum mechanics as the projective representations of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group. However, Wigner's formulation makes no mention of the Weyl-Heisenberg group and the hermitian representation of its algebra that are the Heisenberg commutation relations fundamental to quantum physics. We put aside the relativistic …
