In-situ epitaxial growth of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin films is demonstrated on a non-oxide substrate CaF$_2$. Structural analysis reveals that compressive stress is moderately added to 36-nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, which pushes up the critical temperature above 15 K, showing higher values than that of bulk crystals. Critical current density at $T$ = 4.5 K reaches 5.9 x 10$^4$ Acm$^{-2}$ at $μ_0H$ = 10 T, and 4.2 x 10$^4$ Acm$^{-2}$ at $μ_0H$ = 14 T. These results indicate that fluoride substrates have high potential for the growth of iron-based superconductors in comparison with popular oxide substrates.
The effects of electron doping and phonon vibrations on the magnetic properties of monolayer and bilayer FeSe epitaxial films on SrTiO$_3$ have been studied, respectively, using first-principles calculations with van der Waals correction. For monolayer FeSe epitaxial film, the combined effect of electron doping and phonon vibrations readily leads to magnetic frustration between the collinear antiferromagnetic state and the checkerboard antiferromagnetic Néel state. For bilayer FeSe epitaxial film, such magnetic frustration is much more easily induced by electron doping in its bottom layer than…
Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy is employed to investigate the stoichiometry and defects of epitaxial FeSe thin films on SrTiO3(001) substrates under various post-growth annealing conditions. Low-temperature annealing with an excess supply of Se leads to formation of Fe vacancies and superstructures, accompanied by a superconductivity (metal)-to-insulator transition in FeSe films. By contrast, high-temperature annealing could eliminate the Fe vacancies and superstructures, and thus recover the high-temperature superconducting phase of monolayer FeSe films. We also observe multilayer Fe…
The significantly enhanced superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of an FeSe monolayer on SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Here, based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we propose another candidate substrate LaO(001) for the epitaxial growth of FeSe monolayer to realize superconductivity. Our calculations show that for the optimal adsorption structure of FeSe monolayer on LaO(001), the stripe antiferromagnetic state and the dimer antiferromagnetic state are almost energetically degenerate, indicating the existence of stron…
Biaxially textured FeSe1-xTex films have been realized on Fe-buffered MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Similar to the Fe/BaFe2As2 bilayers, the crystalline quality of FeSe1-xTex films exhibit a sharp out-of-plane and in-plane texture less than 0.9°. The Fe/FeSe1-xTex bilayers showed high superconducting transition temperatures of over 17 K. The angular-dependent critical current densities exhibit peaks positioned at H // ab similar to other pnictide thin films. The volume pinning force of FeSe1-xTex in this direction is very strong compared with that of Co-doped BaFe2As2, due to a go…
High purity epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films with different thickness were grown by Pulsed Laser Ablation on different substrates. By varying the film thickness, Tc up to 21K were observed, significantly larger than the bulk value. Structural analyses indicated that the a axis changes significantly with the film thickness and is linearly related to the Tc. The latter result indicates the important role of the compressive strain in enhancing Tc. Tc is also related to both the Fe-(Se,Te) bond length and angle, suggesting the possibility of further enhancement.
We report comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission investigations on the electronic structure of single crystal multiple-layer FeSe films grown on CaF2 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Measurements on FeSe/CaF2 samples with different superconducting transition temperatures Tc of 4 K, 9 K and 14 K reveal electronic difference in their Fermi surface and band structure. Indication of the nematic phase transition is observed from temperature-dependent measurements of these samples; the nematic transition temperature is 140-160 K, much higher than 90 K for the bulk FeSe. Potassi…
The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrate has inspired great experimental and theoretical interests. First-principles density functional theory calculations, which have played an important role in the study of bulk iron-based superconductors, also participate in the investigation of interfacial superconductivity. In this article, we review the calculation results on the electronic and magnetic structures of FeSe epitaxial films, emphasizing on the interplay between different degrees of freedom, such as charge, spin, and lattice vibrations. Furthermor…
The FeSe samples in the form of polycrystals, single crystals and thin films have been prepared and characterized. The synthesized material has been hot isostatically pressed under pressure of 0.45 GPa of 5N purity argon with the use of the high gas pressure trap system (HGPTS). Thin films have been fabricated by the mixed procedures with the use of DC sputtering from various types of targets and processed employing the HGPTS. The used HGPTS assures a full separation of the active volume for synthesis or crystal growth of material and the inert gas medium. The obtained FeSe0.88 samples have Tc…
In order to investigate the effects of in-plane strain on the superconductivity of FeSe, epitaxial thin films of FeSe were fabricated on CaF$_2$ substrates. The films are compressed along the a-axis and their superconducting transition temperatures $T_{\mathrm c}^{\mathrm {zero}}$ reach 11.4 K, which is approximately 1.5 times higher than that of bulk crystals. The $T_{\mathrm c}$ values are weakly dependent on the ratio of the lattice constants, $c$ / $a$, compared to that of Fe(Se,Te). Our results indicate that even a binary system FeSe has room for improvement, and will open a new route for…
The interest in Fe-chalcogenide unconventional superconductors is intense after the critical temperature of FeSe was reported enhanced by more than one order of magnitude in the monolayer limit at the interface to an insulating oxide substrate. In heterostructures comprising interfaces of FeSe with topological insulators, additional interesting physical phenomena is predicted to arise e.g. in form of {\it topological superconductivity}. So far superconductive properties of Fe-chalcogenide monolayers were mostly studied by local scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, which can detect pseu…
We report the successful growth of epitaxial thin films of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ with $x \leq 0.43$ via pulsed laser deposition. As S content increases, the nematic transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm s}$, decreases systematically and the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm c}$, shows a gradual decrease even when $x$ exceeds the nematic end point (NEP), similar to bulk samples. A new kink anomaly was observed in the $ρ$-$T$ curves for films with large $x$, which is likely due to a magnetic transition. The obtained phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ thin films is in contrast to that…
Epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (La0.18Sr0.82)(Al0.59Ta0.41)O3 (LSAT), CaF2-buffered LSAT and bare CaF2 substrates, which exhibit an almost identical in-plane lattice parameter. The composition of all Fe(Se,Te) films were determined to be FeSe0.7Te0.3 by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, irrespective of the substrate. Albeit the lattice parameters of all templates have comparable values, the in-plane lattice parameter of the FeSe0.7Te0.3 films varies significantly. We found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of FeSe0.7Te0.3 thin …
Superconducting epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were prepared on SrTiO3 (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The high purity of the phase, the quality of the growth and the epitaxy were studied with different experimental techniques: X-rays diffraction, reflection high energy electron diffraction, scanning tunnelling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The substrate temperature during the deposition was found to be the main parameter governing sample morphology and superconducting critical temperature. Films obtained in the optimal conditions show an epitaxial growth with c axis …
Single monolayer FeSe film grown on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (T$_C$ $\sim$ 100 K) among the iron-based superconductors (iron-pnictide), while T$_C$ of bulk FeSe is only $\sim$ 8 K. Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were believed to be crucial in iron-pnictides, which has inspired several proposals to understand the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system. Although bulk FeSe does not show the antiferromagnetic order, calculations suggest that the parent FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ films are AFM. Experimentally, due to lacking of direct probe, the magnetic st…
We perform in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on (00l) FeSe thin-film grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. The study indicates that the low frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components, a broad one which takes up most of the spectral weight and a very narrow one roughly below 100-150 \cm. The narrow Drude component locates at so low frequencies that no such behavior was observed in iron pnictides. The overall plasma frequency is found to be smaller than the FeAs based compounds, suggesting a stronger correlation effect. Similar to iron pnictides, a …
We report on the isotropic pinning obtained in epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2 (001) substrate. High critical current density values larger than 1 MA/cm2 in self field in liquid helium are reached together with a very weak dependence on the magnetic field and a complete isotropy. Analysis through Transmission Electron Microscopy evidences the presence of defects looking like lattice disorder at a very small scale, between 5 and 20 nm, which are thought to be responsible for such isotropic behavior in contrast to what observed on SrTiO3, where defects parallel to the c-axis enhance…
FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on CaF2, LaAlO3 and MgO substrates and structurally and electro-magnetically characterized in order to study the influence of the substrate on their transport properties. The in-plane lattice mismatch between FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulk and the substrates shows no influence on the lattice parameters of the films, whereas the type of substrates affects the crystalline quality of the films and, therefore, the superconducting properties. The film on MgO showed an extra peak in the angular dependence of critical current density Jc(θ) at θ = 180° …
We investigated the microwave conductivity spectrum of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ epitaxial films on CaF$_2$ in the vicinity of the superconducting transition. We observed the critical behavior of the superconducting fluctuations in these films with a dimensional crossover from two-dimensional to three-dimensional as the film thickness increased. From the temperature dependence of the scaling parameters we conclude that the universality class of the superconducting transition in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ is that of the 3D-XY model. The lower limit of the onset temperature of the superconducting fluct…
Stabilized FeSe thin films in ambient pressure with tunable superconductivity would be a promising candidate for superconducting electronic devices yet its superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is below 10 K in bulk materials. By carefully controlling the depositions on twelve kinds of substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique, high quality single crystalline FeSe samples were fabricated with full width of half maximum 0.515? in the rocking curve and clear four-fold symmetry in phi-scan from x-ray diractions. The films have a maximum Tc 15 K on the CaF2 substrate and do not show…
The strong fascination exerted by the binary compound of FeSe demands reliable engineering protocols and more effective approaches towards inducing superconductivity in FeSe thin films. Our study addresses the peculiarities in pulsed laser deposition which determine FeSe thin film growth and focuses on the film/substrate interface, the tendency for domain matching epitaxial growth but also the disadvantage of chemical heterogeneity. We propose that homogenization of the substrate surface improves the control of stoichiometry, texture, and nanostrain in a way that favors superconductivity even …
To understand the chemical reaction at the interface of materials, we performed a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in four types of Fe(Te,Se) superconducting thin films prepared on different types of substrates: CaF2 substrate, CaF2 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer, CaF2 substrate with a FeSe buffer layer, and a LaAlO3 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer. Based on the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis, we found possible interdiffusion between fluorine and selenium that has a strong influence on the superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se) films. The chemical interdif…
We investigated the transport properties under magnetic fields of up to 9 T for FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ thin films on CaF$_2$. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity revealed that for $x = 0.2 - 0.4$, where $T_{\rm c}$ is the highest, the width of the superconducting transition increased with increasing magnetic field, while the width was almost the same with increasing magnetic field for $x = 0 - 0.1$. In addition, the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient drastically changed between $x = 0.1$ and $0.2$ at low temperatures. These results indicate that cle…
The enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on titanates opens a fascinating pathway towards the rational design of high-temperature superconductors. Utilizing the state-of-the-art oxide plus chalcogenide molecular beam epitaxy systems in situ connected to a synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscope, epitaxial LaTiO3 layers with varied atomic thicknesses are inserted between monolayer FeSe and SrTiO3, for systematic modulation of interfacial chemical potential. With the dramatic increase of electron accumulation at the LaTiO3-SrTiO3 surface, providing a substantial surge of wor…
FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ thin films with PbO-type structure are successfully grown on MgO(100) and LaSrAlO$_{4}$(001) substrates from FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x+d}$ polycrystalline targets by pulsed-laser deposition. The film deposited on the MgO substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 63 nm) shows superconductivity at 6.7 K (onset) and 5.5 K (zero resistivity). On the other hand, the film deposited on the LaSrAlO$_{4}$ substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 52 nm) exhibits only the onset of superconducting transition at 2.6 K, but does not show zero resistivity. This indicates the strong influence of epitaxial strain…
Superconducting FeSe0.8Te0.2 thin films on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates were electrochemically etched in an ionic liquid DEME-TFSI electrolyte with a gate bias of 5 V. Superconductivity at 38 K was commonly observed on all substrates after etching the films with a thickness above 30 nm, in spite of different Tc of 8 K, 12 K and 19 K before the etching on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates, respectively. Tc returned to the original value by removing the gate bias. The Tc enhancement on the thick film indicates no relationship between the Tc enhancement and any interface effects between th…
Understanding the interplay of structural and electronic symmetry breaking in Fe-based high temperature superconductors remains of high interest. In this work we grow strain-patterned multilayer FeSe thin films in a range of thicknesses using molecular beam epitaxy. We study the formation of electronic nematic domains and spatially-varying strain using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We directly visualize the formation of edge dislocations that give rise to a two-dimensional edge dislocation network in the films. Interestingly, we observe a 45 degree in-plane rotation of the di…
The single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates have attracted much attention because of its record high superconducting critical temperature (Tc). It is usually believed that the composition of the epitaxially grown single-layer FeSe/STO films is stoichiometric, i.e., the ratio of Fe and Se is 1:1. Here we report the identification of a large amount of excess Fe in the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films. By depositing Se onto the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films, we find by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) the formation of the second-layer FeSe isla…
Single-layer FeSe films with extremely expanded in-plane lattice constant of 3.99A are fabricated by epitaxially growing FeSe/Nb:SrTiO3/KTaO3 heterostructures, and studied by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Two elliptical electron pockets at the Brillion zone corner are resolved with negligible hybridization between them, indicating the symmetry of the low energy electronic structure remains intact as a free-standing single-layer FeSe, although it is on a substrate. The superconducting gap closes at a record high temperature of 70K for the iron based superconductors. Intrigu…
It is well known that superconductivity in Fe-based materials is favoured under tetragonal symmetry, whereas competing orders such as spin-density-wave (SDW) and nematic orders emerge or are reinforced upon breaking the fourfold (C4) symmetry. Accordingly, suppression of orthorhombicity below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is found in underdoped compounds. Epitaxial film growth on selected substrates allows the design of crystal specific lattice distortions. Here we show that despite the breakdown of the C4 symmetry induced by a 5% difference in the lattice parameters, monolay…
We demonstrate the successful fabrication on CaF$_2$ substrates of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ films with $0 \le x \le 1$, including the region of $0.1 \le x \le 0.4$, which is well known to be the "phase-separation region", via pulsed laser deposition which is a thermodynamically non-equilibrium method. In the resulting films, we observe a giant enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}$, in the region of $0.1 \le x \le 0.4$: the maximum value reaches 23 K, which is approximately 1.5 times as large as the values reported for bulk samples of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$. We pre…
Nanometer-sized particular structures are generated on the surfaces of FeSe epitaxial films directly after exposure to air; this phenomenon was studied in the current work because these structures are an obstacle to field-induced superconductivity in electric double-layer transistors using FeSe channel layers. Chemical analyses using field-effect scanning Auger electron spectroscopy revealed no clear difference in the chemical composition between the particular structures and the other flat surface region. This observation limits the possible origins of the particulate formation to light eleme…
We report on fully epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 (FST) thin films with high-quality grown on CaF2 (00l) substrate at a low temperature of 300°C by pulsed laser deposition. The transport Jc of thin films is up to 1.36 MA/cm2 in self-field and 0.97 MA/cm2 in 9 T at 4.2 K, indicating very weak field dependence. A nearly isotropy of Jc (γ= Jc(H//ab)/Jc(H//c) as low as 1.09 at 9 T is achieved in the FST thin films. Moreover, no clear amorphous interfacial layer presents between the film and the substrate probably ascribing to low temperature and low laser repetition rate grown, while the thickness of reac…
The iron-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_\text{2}$As$_\text{2}$ is emerging as a key material for high magnetic field applications owing to the recent developments in superconducting wires and bulk permanent magnets. Epitaxial thin films play important roles in investigating and artificially tuning physical properties; nevertheless, the synthesis of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ epitaxial thin films remained challenging because of the high volatility of K. Herein, we report the successful growth of epitaxial Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_\text{2}$As$_\text{2}$ thin films by molecular-beam epitaxy w…
Epitaxial engineering of solid-state heterointerfaces is a leading avenue to realizing enhanced or novel electronic states of matter. As a recent example, bulk FeSe is an unconventional superconductor with a modest transition temperature ($T_c$) of 9 K. When a single atomic layer of FeSe is grown on SrTiO$_3$, however, its $T_c$ can skyrocket by an order of magnitude to 65 K or 109 K. Since this discovery in 2012, efforts to reproduce, understand, and extend these findings continue to draw both excitement and scrutiny. In this review, we first present a critical survey of experimental measurem…
We present high frequency measurements of the vortex dynamics of a FeSe$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ ($x=0.5$) thin film grown on a CaF$_2$ substrate and with a critical temperature $T_c\simeq18\;$K, performed by means of a dual frequency dielectric resonator at 16.4 GHz and 26.6 GHz. We extract and discuss various important vortex parameters related to the pinning properties of the sample, such as the characteristic frequency $ν_c$, the pinning constant $k_p$ and the pinning barrier height $U$ relevant for creep phenomena. We find that the vortex system is in the single-vortex regime, and that pinning attai…
We have investigated the correlation between structural and transport properties in sputtered $β$-FeSe films grown onto SrTiO$_3$ (100). The growth parameters, such as substrate temperature and thickness, have been varied in order to explore different regimes. In the limit of textured thick films, we found promising features like an enhanced $T_{\rm c}\sim12\,$K, a relatively high $H_{\rm c2}$ and a low anisotropy. By performing magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements, we investigate the influence of the disorder associated with the textured morphology on some features attributed t…
We report on the systematic characterization of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_2$As$_2$ epitaxial thin films on CaF$_2$ substrate in view of their possible use for superconducting electronic applications. By using different and complementary techniques we studied the morphological characteristics of the surface, the structural properties, the magnetic response, and the superconducting properties in terms of critical temperature, critical current, and energy gaps. Particular attention was paid to the homogeneity of the films and to the comparison of their superconducting properties with those of s…
We demonstrate the growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films on AEF2 (001) (AE: Ca, Sr, Ba) single crystal substrates using pulsed laser deposition. All films are grown epitaxially despite of a large misfit of -10.6% for BaF2 substrate. For all films a reaction layer is formed at the interface confirmed by X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature of the film on CaF2 is around 27 K, whereas the corresponding values of the other films are around 21 K. The Ba-122 on CaF2 shows identical crystalline quality and superconducting prop…
In contrast to bulk FeSe superconductor, heavily electron-doped FeSe-derived superconductors show relatively high Tc without hole Fermi surfaces and nodal superconducting gap structure, which pose great challenges on pairing theories in the iron-based superconductors. In the heavily electron-doped FeSe-based superconductors, the dominant factors and the exact working mechanism that is responsible for the high Tc need to be clarified. In particular, a clean control of carrier concentration remains to be a challenge for revealing how superconductivity and Fermi surface topology evolves with carr…
This paper reports that ~10-nm-thick FeSe thin films exhibit insulator-like behavior in terms of the temperature dependence of their electrical resistivity even though bulk FeSe has a metallic electronic structure that has been confirmed by photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. This apparent contradiction is explained by potential barriers formed in the conduction band. Very thin FeSe epitaxial films with various [Fe]/[Se] were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and classified into two groups with respect to lattice strain and electrical properties. Lattice parameter …
It is thought that strong electron correlation in an insulating parent phase would enhance a critical temperature (Tc) of superconductivity in a doped phase via enhancement of the binding energy of a Cooper pair as known in high-Tc cuprates. To induce a superconductor transition in an insulating phase, injection of a high density of carriers is needed (e.g., by impurity doping). An electric double-layer transistor (EDLT) with an ionic liquid gate insulator enables such a field-induced transition to be investigated and is expected to result in a high Tc because it is free from deterioration in …
FeSex (x = 0.80, 0.84, 0.88, 0.92) thin films were prepared on SrTiO3(001) (STO), (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3(001) (LSAT), and LaAlO3(001) (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition method. All thin films show single-phase and c-axis oriented epitaxial growth, and are superconducting. Among them, the FeSe0.88 thin films show Tc, onset of 11.8 K and Tc, 0 of 3.4 K. The upper critical magnetic field is estimated to be 14.0 T.
Thin film growth of iron chalcogenides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is still a delicate issue in terms of simultaneous control of stoichiometry, texture, substrate/film interface properties, and superconducting properties. The high volatility of the constituents sharply limits optimal deposition temperatures to a narrow window and mainly challenges reproducibility for vacuum based methods. In this work we demonstrate the beneficial introduction of a semiconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ seed layer for subsequent homoepitaxial growth of superconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ thin fi…
Pulsed laser deposition, a non-equilibrium thin-film growth technique, was used to stabilize metastable tetragonal iron sulfide (FeS), the bulk state of which is known as a superconductor with a critical temperature of 4 K. Comprehensive experiments revealed four important factors to stabilize tetragonal FeS epitaxial thin films: (i) an optimum growth temperature of 300 °C followed by thermal quenching, (ii) an optimum growth rate of ~7 nm/min, (iii) use of a high-purity bulk target, and (iv) use of a single-crystal substrate with small in-plane lattice mismatch (CaF2). Electrical resistivity …
Cuprate high temperature superconductors consist of two quasi-two-dimensional (2D) substructures: CuO2 superconducting layers and charge reservoir layers. The superconductivity is realized by charge transfer from the charge reservoir layers into the superconducting layers without chemical dopants and defects being introduced into the latter, similar to modulation-doping in semiconductor superlattices of AlGaAs/GaAs. Inspired by this scheme, we have been searching for high temperature superconductivity in ultrathin films of superconductors epitaxially grown on semiconductor/oxide substrates sin…
This paper reports comprehensive results on thin-film growth of 122-type iron-pnictide superconductors, AE(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (AE = Ca, Sr, and Ba, AEFe2As2:Co) by a pulsed laser deposition method using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser as an excitation source. The most critical parameter to produce the SrFe2As2:Co and BaFe2As2:Co phases is the substrate temperature (Ts). It is difficult to produce highly-pure CaFe2As2:Co phase thin film at any Ts. For BaFe2As2:Co epitaxial films, controlling Ts at 800-850 °C and growth rate to 2.8-3.3 Å/s produced high-quality films with good crystal…
The discovery of superconductivity (SC) with a transition temperature, Tc, up to 65K in single-layer FeSe (bulk Tc =8K) films grown on SrTiO3 substrates has attracted special attention to Fe-based thin films. The high Tc is a consequence of the combined effect of electron transfer from the oxygen-vacant substrate to the FeSe thin film and lattice tensile strain. Here we demonstrate the realization of SC in the parent compound BaFe2As2 (no bulk Tc) just by tensile lattice strain without charge doping. We investigate the interplay between strain and SC in epitaxial BaFe2As2 thin films on Fe-buff…
Unique superconductivity at surfaces/interfaces, as exemplified by LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, and the high transition temperature in ultrathin FeSe films, have triggered intense debates on how superconductivity is affected in atomic and electronic reconstructions. The surface of superconducting cubic spinel oxide LiTi2O4 is another interesting system because its inherent surface electronic and atomic reconstructions add complexity to superconducting properties. Investigations of such surfaces are hampered by the lack of single crystals or high-quality thin films. Here, using low-temperature sca…
Although nanoscale deformation, such as nanostrain in iron chalcogenide (FeSexTe1-x, FST) thin films, has attracted attention owing to the enhancement of general superconducting properties, including critical current density (Jc) and critical transition temperature, its formation has proven to be an extremely challenging and complex process thus far. Herein, we successfully fabricated an epitaxial FST thin film with uniformly distributed nanostrain by injection of a trace amount of CeO2 inside FST matrix using sequential pulsed laser deposition. Using transmission electron microscopy and geome…
The discovery of the interface enhanced superconductivity in the single layer film of FeSe epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrates has triggered a flurry of activity in the field of superconductivity. It raised the hope to find more conventional high-Tc superconductors which are purely driven by the electron-phonon interaction at ambient pressure. Here we report the experimental evidence from the measurement of scanning tunneling spectroscopy for the interface enhanced high-Tc superconductivity in the Pb thin film islands grown on SrTiO3 substrates. The superconducting energy gap of the Pb film…
NdFeAs(O,F) thin films having different fluorine contents were grown on 5 deg. or 10 deg. vicinal cut MgO and CaF2 single crystalline substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Structural characterisations by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction confirmed the epitaxial growth of NdFeAs(O,F). The resistivities of the ab-plane and along the c-axis were derived from the resistivity measurements in the longitudinal and transversal directions. The c-axis resistivity was always higher than the ab-plane resistivity, resulting from the anisotropic electronic structure. The resi…
Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, an archetypical iron-based high-temperature superconductor with a simple structure but rich physical properties, has attracted lots of attention because the two end compositions, Se content $x = 0$ and 1, exhibit antiferromagnetism and nematicity, respectively, making it an ideal candidate for studying their interactions with superconductivity. However, what is clearly lacking to date is a complete phase diagram of Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ as functions of its chemical compositions since phase separation usually occurs from $x\sim 0.6$ to 0.9 in bulk crystals. Moreover, fi…
