We have developed a fully consistent framework for calculations in the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) with $NN$ interactions from the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) and other unitary transformations of realistic interactions. The consistency of our calculations, which use the same Hamiltonian to determine the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) ground states and the residual interaction for QRPA, guarantees an excellent decoupling of spurious strength, without the need for empirical corrections. While work is under way to include SRG-evolved 3N interactions, we presently account for some 3N effects by means of a linearly density-dependent interaction, whose strength is adjusted to reproduce the charge radii of closed-shell nuclei across the whole nuclear chart. As a first application, we perform a survey of the monopole, dipole, and quadrupole response of the calcium isotopic chain and of the underlying single-particle spectra, focusing on how their properties depend on the SRG parameter $λ$. Unrealistic spin-orbit splittings suggest that spin-orbit terms from the 3N interaction are called for. Nevertheless, our general findings are comparable to results from phenomenological QRPA calculations using Skyrme or Gogny energy density functionals. Potentially interesting phenomena related to low-lying strength warrant more systematic investigations in the future.
We review the status of ab initio calculations of allowed beta decays (both Fermi and Gamow-Teller), within the framework of the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach.
In the past few years in-medium similarity renormalization group methods have been introduced and developed. In these methods the Hamiltonian is evolved using a unitary transformation in order to decouple a reference state from the rest of the Hilbert space. The evolution by itself will generate, even if we start from a two-body interaction, many-body forces which are usually neglected. In this work we estimate the effect of these residual many-body forces by comparing results obtained with the Hybrid Multi-determinant method, which keeps the Hamiltonian within the two-body sector, with the co…
I examine the evolution of nuclear forces under the similarity renormalization group (SRG) using traces of the many-body configuration-space Hamiltonian. While SRG is often said to "soften" the nuclear interaction, I provide numerical examples which paint a complementary point of view: the primary effect of SRG, using the kinetic energy as the generator of the evolution, is to shift downward the diagonal matrix elements in the model space, while the off-diagonal elements undergo significantly smaller changes. By employing traces, I argue that this is a very natural outcome as one diagonalizes …
Renormalization group approach to neutron matter: quasiparticle interactions, superfluid gaps and the equation of state
Ab initio nuclear many-body frameworks require extensive computational resources, especially when targeting heavier nuclei. Importance-truncation (IT) techniques allow to significantly reduce the dimensionality of the problem by neglecting unimportant contributions to the solution of the many-body problem. In this work, we apply IT methods to the nonperturbative in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) approach and investigate the induced errors for ground-state energies in different mass regimes based on different nuclear Hamiltonians. We study various importance measures, which def…
Over the past decade the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) approach has proven to be a powerful and versatile ab initio many-body method for studying medium-mass nuclei. So far, the IMSRG was limited to the approximation in which only up to two-body operators are incorporated in the renormalization group flow, referred to as the IMSRG(2). In this work, we extend the IMSRG(2) approach to fully include three-body operators yielding the IMSRG(3) approximation. We use a perturbative scaling analysis to estimate the importance of individual terms in this approximation and introduce…
Unitary transformations of a Hamiltonian generally induce interaction terms beyond the particle rank present in the untransformed Hamiltonian that have to be captured and included in a many-body calculation. In systems with strangeness such as hypernuclei, the three-body terms induced by the hyperon-nucleon interaction are strong, so their inclusion is crucial. We present in detail a procedure for computing hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction terms that are induced during a similarity renormalization group (SRG) flow. The SRG is carried out in a basis spanned by antisymmetric harmonic-oscillat…
We have developed an {\it ab initio} deformed in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) for open-shell nuclei. This is a single-reference IMSRG in deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) basis. Deformed wave functions are more efficient in describing deformed nuclei. The broken spherical symmetry needs to be restored by angular momentum projection, which is computational expensive. The angular momentum mainly capture the static correlations and can be estimated by the projection of the HF state. In this work, we do deformed IMSRG calculation and add the correlation energy from projected HF as a le…
Effective interactions have been used to compute the pairing gap for nuclear and neutron matter in several schemes. In this work we analyze the impact of phase-shift equivalent interactions within the BCS theory on the $^1S_0$-channel pairing gap for a translational invariant many-fermion system such as nuclear and neutron matter. We solve the BCS pairing gap equation on a finite momentum grid for a toy model separable Gaussian potential in the $^1S_0$-channel explicitly evolved through the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) transformation and show that in the on-shell and continuum limits…
Background: Recent developments in {\it ab initio} nuclear theory demonstrate promising results in medium- to heavy-mass nuclei. A particular challenge for many of the many-body methodologies, however, is an accurate treatment of the electric-quadrupole, $E2$, strength associated with collectivity. Purpose: The valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) is a particularly powerful method for accessing medium- and high-mass nuclei but has been found to underpredict $E2$ strengths. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the isospin dependence of this underprediction. Met…

By following the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac equation, we work out the exact analytic expressions up to the $1/M^4$ order for the general cases in the covariant density functional theory. These results are further compared with the corresponding ones derived from another novel non-relativistic expansion method, the similarity renormalization group (SRG). Based on that, the origin of the difference between the results obtained by the FW transformation and SRG method is explored.
We have developed a novel ab initio Gamow in-medium similarity renormalization group (Gamow IMSRG) in the complex-energy Berggren framework. The advanced Gamow IMSRG is capable of describing the resonance and nonresonant continuum properties of weakly bound and unbound nuclear many-body systems. As test grounds, carbon and oxygen isotopes have been calculated with chiral two- and three-nucleon forces from the effective field theory. Resonant states observed in the neutron-dripline 24O are well reproduced. The halo structure of the known heaviest Borromean nucleus 22C is clearly seen by calcula…
Precise theoretical calculations of open-shell atomic systems are critical for extracting fundamental physics parameters from precision experiments. Here we present proof-of-principle calculations illustrating the effectiveness of the valence-space formulation of the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group, widely used in nuclear theory, as a new ab initio method for atomic systems. We adapt this approach to study properties of closed- and open-shell many-electron systems from helium to calcium. Ground-state energies, excitation spectra, and ionization energies are obtained for se…
By following the conventional similarity renormalization group (SRG) expansion of the Dirac equation developed in [J.-Y. Guo, Phys. Rev. C \textbf{85}, 021302 (2012)], we work out the analytic expression of the ${1}/{M^4}$ order and verify the convergence of this method. As a step further, the reconstituted SRG method is proposed by using the re-summation technique. The speed of convergence of the reconstituted SRG becomes much faster than the conventional one, and the single-particle densities with the reconstituted SRG are also almost identical to the exact values.
We use a reference state based on symmetry-restored states from deformed mean-field or generator-coordinate-method (GCM) calculations in conjunction with the in-medium similarity-renormalization group (IMSRG) to compute spectra and matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay. Because the decay involves ground states from two nuclei, we use evolved operators from the IMSRG in one nucleus in a subsequent GCM calculation in the other. We benchmark the resulting IMSRG+GCM method against complete shell-model diagonalization for both the energies of low-lying states in $^{48}$Ca and …
