The observed small, positive cosmological constant may originate from a four-fermion interaction generated by the spin-torsion coupling in the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble gravity if the fermions are condensing. In particular, such a condensation occurs for quark fields during the quark-gluon/hadron phase transition in the early Universe. We study how the torsion-induced four-fermion interaction is affected by adding two terms to the Dirac Lagrangian density: the parity-violating pseudoscalar density dual to the curvature tensor and a spinor-bilinear scalar density which measures the nonminimal coupling of fermions to torsion.
The possibility to distinguish Dirac from Majorana fermion by gravitational interaction and torsion coupling is discussed. The scattering of both Dirac and Majorana particles are the same in the spherically symmetric gravitational field up to the first order perturbation of the fermion-gravity interaction. The scattering behaviors of Dirac and Majorana fermion are also the same by axial vector torsion but different by vector torsion. We get the conclusion that the scattering by vector torsion field can distinguish the Dirac from Majorana neutrino.
We study a spin 1/2 fermion in a teleparallel f(T) domain-wall thick braneworld. By assuming a non-minimal coupling of fermion to the torsion, a geometric alternative to the Yukawa coupling is found. The torsion parameters control the width of the massless Kaluza-Klein mode and the properties of the analogue quantum-potential near the origin. The non-normalized massive fermionic modes are also analyzed.
A cosmological approach based on considering a cosmic background with non-zero torsion is shown in order to give an option of explaining a possible phantom evolution, not ruled out according to the current observational data. We revise some aspects of the formal schemes on torsion and, according them, we develop a formalism which can be an interesting alternative for exploring Cosmology.
It is investigated the cosmological dynamics of scalar-torsion $f(T,ϕ)$ gravity as a dark energy model, where $T$ is the torsion scalar of teleparallel gravity and $ϕ$ is a canonical scalar field. In this context, we are concerned with the phenomenology of the class of models with non-linear coupling to gravity and exponential potential. We obtain the critical points of the autonomous system, along with the stability conditions of each one of them and their cosmological properties. Particularly, we show the existence of new attractors with accelerated expansion, as well as, new scaling solutio…
An extension to the Einstein-Cartan (EC) action is discussed in terms of cosmological solutions. The torsion incorporated in the EC Lagrangian is assumed to be totally anti-symmetric, represented by a time-like axial vector $S^μ$. The dynamics of torsion is invoked by a novel kinetic term. Here we show that this kinetic term gives rise to dark energy, while the quadratic torsion term, emanating from the EC part, represents a stiff fluid that leads to a bouncing cosmology solution. A constraint on the bouncing solution is calculated using cosmological data from different epochs.
A cosmological model in an Einstein-Cartan framework endowed with torsion is studied. For a torsion function assumed to be proportional to Hubble expansion function, namely $ϕ=-αH$, the contribution of torsion function as a dark matter component is studied in two different approaches. In the first one, the total matter energy density is altered by torsion coupling $α$, giving rise to an effective dark matter and cosmological constant terms that reproduce quite well the flat cosmic concordance model. In the second approach, starting with just standard baryonic matter plus a cosmological constan…
The stable pseudo-scalar degree of freedom of the quadratic Poincaré Gauge theory of gravity is shown to be a suitable dark matter candidate. We find the parameter space of the theory which can account for all the predicted cold dark matter, and constrain such parameters with astrophysical observations.

We present a unified description of the matter and dark energy epochs, using a class of scalar-torsion theories. We provide a Hamiltonian description, and by applying Noether's theorem and by requiring the field equations to admit linear-in-momentum conservation laws we obtain two specific classes of scalar-field potentials. We extract analytic solutions and we perform a detailed dynamical analysis. We show that the system possesses critical points that correspond to scaling solutions in which the effective, total equation-of-state parameter is close to zero and points in which it is equal to …
We used a stationary torsion balance with a beryllium-aluminum composition dipole to search for ultra low-mass bosonic dark matter coupled to baryon minus lepton number. We set 95% confidence limits on the coupling constant $g_{\rm B-L}$ for bosons with masses between $10^{-18}$ and $10^{-16}$ eV/$c^2$ with the best performance at $m_{\rm DM} = 8\times 10^{-18}$ eV/$c^2$ constraining $g_{B-L}(\hbar c)^{-1/2} < 1 \times 10^{-25}$. This provides a complimentary limit to equivalence-principle experiments that search for ultra low-mass bosons as force-mediating particles.
In this work, we investigate the effects of the torsion-fermionic interaction on the energy levels of fermions within a Riemann-Cartan geometry using a model-independent approach. We consider the case of fermions minimally coupled to the background torsion as well as non-minimal extensions via additional couplings with the vector and axial fermionic currents which include parity-breaking interactions. In the limit of zero-curvature, and for the cases of constant and spherically symmetric torsion, we find a Zeeman-like effect on the energy levels of fermions and anti-fermions depending on wheth…
A simple gravitational model with torsion is studied, and it is suggested that it could explain the dark matter and dark energy in the universe. It can be reinterpreted as a model using the Einstein gravitational equations where spacetime has regions filled with a perfect fluid with negative energy (pressure) and positive mass density, other regions containing an anisotropic substance that in the rest frame (where the momentum is zero) has negative mass density and a uniaxial stress tensor, and possibly other "luminal" regions where there is no rest frame. The torsion vector field is inhomogen…
Within this work, we propose a new generalised quintom dark energy model in the teleparallel alternative of general relativity theory, by considering a non-minimal coupling between the scalar fields of a quintom model with the scalar torsion component $T$ and the boundary term $B$. In the teleparallel alternative of general relativity theory, the boundary term represents the divergence of the torsion vector, $B=2\nabla_μT^μ$, and is related to the Ricci scalar $R$ and the torsion scalar $T$, by the fundamental relation: $R=-T+B$. We have investigated the dynamical properties of the present qui…
We study the growth of linear matter density perturbations in a modified gravity approach of scalar field couplings with metric and torsion. In the equivalent scalar-tensor formulation, the matter fields in the Einstein frame interact as usual with an effective dark energy component, whose dynamics is presumably governed by a scalar field that sources a torsion mode. As a consequence, the matter density ceases to be self-conserved, thereby making an impact not only on the background cosmological evolution but also on the perturbative spectrum of the local inhomogeneities. In order to estimate …
We show that a scalar field without a kinetic term in the Lagrangian density, coupled to the covariant divergence of the torsion vector in the Einstein$-$Cartan theory of gravity, becomes kinetic in its general-relativistic equivalent formulation. The resulting kinetic term is negative: such a scalar field could be a source of phantom dark energy.
I investigate the general extension of Einstein's gravity by considering the third rank non-metricity tensor and the torsion tensor. The minimal coupling to Dirac fields faces an ambiguity coming from a severe arbitrariness of the Fock-Ivanenko coefficients. This arbitrariness is fed in part by the covariant derivative of Dirac matrices, which is not completely determined as well. It is remarkable that this feature is not exclusive to the non-metricity case: it happens also for gravity with torsion alone. Nevertheless, theory in vacuum is well defined and non-trivial, where torsion is the sour…
Torsion is a non-Riemannian geometrical extension of general relativity that allows including the spin of matter and the twisting of spacetime. Cosmological models with torsion have been considered in the literature to solve problems of either the very early (high redshift $z$) or the present-day Universe. This paper focuses on distinguishable observational signatures of torsion that could not be otherwise explained with a scalar field in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We show that when torsion is present, the cosmic duality relation between the angular diameter distance, $D_{\mathrm A}$, and the…
We derive the uncertainty principle for a Dirac fermion in a torsion field obeying the Hehl-Datta (HD) equation. We first discuss that there should be a correction factor to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle (HUP) when torsional effects are taken into consideration. We then derive the uncertainty relation from a solitary wave solution of the HD equation in 1+1 dimensions. We find that the results agree with the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). We then introduce the unified length scale $L_{CS}$ (which unifies Compton wavelength and Schwarzschild radius) into the HD equation and see …
