Gauge theories with no Maxwell term are investigated in various setups. The dynamical generation of the Maxwell term is correlated to the scale invariance properties of the system. This is discussed mainly in the cases where the gauge coupling carries dimensions. The term is generated when the theory contains a scale explicitly, when it is asymptotically free and in particular also when the scale invariance is spontaneously broken. The terms are not generated when the scale invariance is maintained. Examples studied include the large $N$ limit of the $CP^{N-1}$ model in $(2+ε)$ dimensions, a 3D gauged $ϕ^6$ vector model and its supersymmetric extension. In the latter case the generation of the Maxwell term at a fixed point is explored. The phase structure of the $d=3$ case is investigated in the presence of a Chern-Simons term as well. In the supersymmetric $ϕ^6$ model the emergence of the Maxwell term is accompanied by the dynamical generation of the Chern-Simons term and its multiplet and dynamical breaking of the parity symmetry. In some of the phases long range forces emerge which may result in logarithmic confinement. These include a dilaton exchange which plays a role also in the case when the theory has no gauge symmetry. Gauged Lagrangian realizations of the 2D coset models do not lead to emergent Maxwell terms. We discuss a case where the gauge symmetry is anomalous.
A new method of abstracting the independent gauge invariances of higher derivative systems, recently introduced in [1], has been applied to higher derivative field theories. This has been discussed taking the extended Maxwell-Chern-Simons model as an example. A new Hamiltonian analysis of the model is provided. This Hamiltonian analysis has been used to construct the independent gauge generator. An exact mapping between the Hamiltonian gauge transformations and the U(1) symmetries of the action has been established.
I show, in canonical formulation of flat space Maxwell theory, that its duality rotation invariance must have constant parameter, cannot be promoted to a local one by adding a compensating field, and that these conclusions hold in the curved space Maxwell-Einstein extension.
The free Maxwell theory in D<>4 dimensions provides a physical example of a unitary, scale invariant theory which is NOT conformally invariant. The easiest way to see this is that the field strength operator F_mn is neither a primary nor a descendant. We show how conformal multiplets can be completed, and conformality restored, by adding new local operators to the theory. In D>=5, this can only be done by sacrificing unitarity of the extended Hilbert space. We analyze the full symmetry structure of the extended theory, which turns out to be related to the OSp(D,2|2) superalgebra.
We revisit the invariance of the curved spacetime Maxwell equations under conformal transformations. Contrary to standard literature, we include the discussion of the four-current, the wave equations for the four-potential and the field, and the behaviour of gauge conditions under the conformal transformation.
The spacetime symmetries of classical electrodynamics supplemented with a Chern-Simons term that contains a constant nondynamical 4-vector are investigated. In addition to translation invariance and the expected three remaining Lorentz symmetries characterized by the little group of the external vector, the model possesses an additional spacetime symmetry if the nondynamical vector is lightlike. The conserved current associated with this invariance is determined, and the symmetry structure arising from this invariance and the usual little group ISO(2) is identified as SIM(2).
Bunster and Henneaux and, separately, Deser have very recently considered the possibility of gauging the usual electromagnetic duality of Maxwell equations. By using off-shell manipulations in the context of the Principle of least action, they conclude that this is not possible, at least with the conventional compensating gauge fields scheme. Such a conclusion contradicts, however, an old result of Malik and Pradhan, who showed that it is indeed possible to introduce an extra abelian gauge field directly in the vacuum Maxwell equations in order to render them covariant under local duality tran…
Starting from Maxwell-Weyl algebra we found the transformation rules for generalized space-time coordinates and the differential realization of corresponding generators. By treating local gauge invariance of Maxwell-Weyl group, we presented the Einstein-Cartan-Weyl gravity with the additional terms containing the gauge fields associated with the antisymmetric generators.
We show explicitly that the question of gauge invariance of the effective potential in standard scalar electrodynamics remains unchanged despite the introduction of the Chern-Simons term. The result does not depend on the presence of the Maxwell term in the Chern-Simons territory.
Without assuming rotational invariance, we derive Bogomol'nyi equations for the solitons in the abelian Chern-Simons gauge theories with the anomalous magnetic moment interaction. We also evaluate the number of zero modes around a static soliton configuration.
We show that there exist conformally invariant theories for all spins in d=4 de Sitter space, namely the partially massless models with higher derivative gauge invariance under a scalar gauge parameter. This extends the catalog from the two known gauge models -- Maxwell and partially massless spin 2 -- to all spins.
We study the equivalence between the self-dual and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) models coupled to dynamical, U(1) charged matter, both fermionic and bosonic. This is done through an iterative procedure of gauge embedding that produces the dual mapping of the self-dual vector field theory into a Maxwell-Chern-Simons version. In both cases, to establish this equivalence a current-current interaction term is needed to render the matter sector unchanged. Moreover, the minimal coupling of the original self-dual model is replaced by a non-minimal magnetic like coupling in the MCS side. Unlike the …
The possibility of dual equivalence between the self-dual and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) models when the latter is coupled to dynamical, U(1) fermionic charged matter is examined. The proper coupling in the self-dual model is then disclosed using the iterative gauge embedding approach. We found that the self-dual potential needs to couple directly to the Chern-Kernel of the source in order to establish this equivalence besides the need for a self-interaction term to render the matter sector unchanged.
In odd-dimensional spaces, gauge invariance permits a Chern-Simons mass term for the gauge fields in addition to the usual Maxwell-Yang-Mills kinetic energy term. We study the Casimir effect in such a (2+1)-dimensional Abelian theory. For the case of parallel conducting lines the result is the same as for a scalar field. For the case of circular boundary conditions the results are completely different, with even the sign of the effect being opposite for Maxwell-Chern-Simons fields and scalar fields. We further examine the effect of finite temperature. The Casimir stress is found to be attracti…
We show how to obtain all covariant field equations for massless particles of arbitrary integer, or half-integer, helicity in four dimensions from the quantization of the rigid particle, whose action is given by the integrated extrinsic curvature of its worldline, {\ie} $S=α\int ds κ$. This geometrical particle system possesses one extra gauge invariance besides reparametrizations, and the full gauge algebra has been previously identified as classical $\W_3$. The key observation is that the covariantly reduced phase space of this model can be naturally identified with the spinor and twistor de…
Previous work on dynamical black hole instability is further elucidated within the Hamilton-Jacobi method for horizon tunnelling and the reconstruction of the classical action by means of the null-expansion method and making use of a coordinate invariance approach.
A scalar field can be inserted in Maxwell and/or Einstein theory to effect symmetry breaking. Consequences of such a modification are discussed. Possible dynamics for the scalar field are presented.
For the free massless spin-one and spin-two field theories one may write the action in a form which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality. This is achieved by introducing new potentials through solving the constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation. The price for making electric-magnetic duality invariance manifest through this direct procedure is losing manifest Lorentz invariance. Both theories admit supersymmetric extensions, which make the bosonic fields and their corresponding fermionic partners to be parts of the same geometrical object, a supermultiplet. We present in …
We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories with a cosmological constant and U(1)^N gauge symmetry, considering metrics asymptotically approaching the Lifshiftz metric. We study the dependence of the phase diagram on the value of the dynamical exponent. Along the way, we apply holographic renormalization and propose a counterterm valid for arbitrary dimension and dynamical exponent in our setup.
All nonlinear extensions of the source-free Maxwell equations preserving both SO(2) electromagnetic duality invariance and conformal invariance are found, and shown to be limits of a one-parameter generalisation of Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The strong-field limit is the same as that found by Bialynicki-Birula from Born-Infeld theory but the weak-field limit is a new one-parameter extension of Maxwell electrodynamics, which is interacting but admits exact light-velocity plane-wave solutions of arbitrary polarisation. Small-amplitude waves on a constant uniform electromagnetic background exhi…
We deform the anti-de Sitter algebra by adding additional generators $\mathcal{Z}_{ab}$, forming in this way the negative cosmological constant counterpart of the Maxwell algebra. We gauge this algebra and construct a dynamical model with the help of a constrained the BF theory. It turns out that the resulting theory is described by the Einstein-Cartan action with Holst term, and the gauge fields associated with the Maxwell generators $\mathcal{Z}_{ab}$ appear only in topological terms that do not influence dynamical field equations. We briefly comment on the extension of this construction, wh…
Irreversibility and acausality of a sub-system are established in exactly soluble harmonic models with reversible and causal dynamics. It is shown that initial conditions, imposed on some dynamical degrees of freedom may break time reversal invariance for other degrees of freedom. This happens if observations carried out in any large but finite amount of time can not resolve the spectrum of the eliminated degrees of freedom, namely when the spectrum has a condensation point at the ground state. Acausality follows due to the dominance of the dynamics by almost time-independent modes.
Within the superfield approach, we consider the duality between the supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons and self-dual theories in three spacetime dimensions. Using a gauge embedding method, we construct the dual theory to the self-dual model interacting with a matter superfield, which turns out to be not the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter, but a more complicated model, with a ``restricted'' gauge invariance. We stress the difficulties in dualizing the self-dual field coupled to matter into a theory with complete gauge invariance. After that, we show that the duality, achieved be…
We show that the duality between the self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories in 2+1-dimensions survives when the space-time becomes noncommutative. Existence of the Seiberg-Witten map is crucial in the present analysis. It should be noted that the above models, being manifestly gauge variant and invariant respectively, transform differently under the Seiberg-Witten map. We also discuss this duality in the Stuckelberg formalism where the self-dual model is elevated to a gauge theory. The "`master"' lagrangian approach has been followed throughout.
Dynamical mass generation of a two-component fermion in $QED_3$ with a Chern-Simons term is investigated by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation formulated in the lowest ladder approximation. Dependence of the dynamical fermion mass on a gauge-fixing parameter, a gauge coupling constant, and a topological mass is examined by approximated analytical and also numerical methods. The inclusion of the Chern-Simons term makes impossible to choose a peculiar gauge in which a wave function renormalization is absent. The numerical evaluation shows that the wave function renormalization is fairly close …
We study all possible deformations of the Maxwell algebra. In D=d+1\neq 3 dimensions there is only one-parameter deformation. The deformed algebra is isomorphic to so(d+1,1)\oplus so(d,1) or to so(d,2)\oplus so(d,1) depending on the signs of the deformation parameter. We construct in the dS(AdS) space a model of massive particle interacting with Abelian vector field via non-local Lorentz force. In D=2+1 the deformations depend on two parameters b and k. We construct a phase diagram, with two parts of the (b,k) plane with so(3,1)\oplus so(2,1) and so(2,2)\oplus so(2,1) algebras separated by a c…
We show that the abelian Proca model, which is gauge non-invariant with second class constraints can be converted into gauge theories with first class constraints. The method used, which we call Gauge Unfixing employs a projection operator defined in the original phase space. This operator can be constructed in more than one way, and so we get more than one gauge theory. Two such gauge theories are the Stuckelberg theory, and the theory of Maxwell field interacting with an antisymmetric tensor field. We also show that the application of the projection operator does not affect the Lorentz invar…
Derivative expansion and large-$D$ expansion are two perturbation techniques, which are used to generate dynamical black-brane solutions to Einstein's equations in presence of negative cosmological constant. In this note we have compared these two techniques and established the equivalence of the gravity solutions generated by these two different techniques in appropriate regime of parameter space up to first non-trivial order in both the perturbation parameters for Einstein-Maxwell systems, generalizing the earlier works of [arXiv:1807.05058], [arXiv:1902.00854] for non-charged systems. An on…
A new classical 2-spinor approach to $U(1)$ gauge theory is presented in which the usual four-potential vector field is replaced by a symmetric second rank spinor. Following a lagrangian formulation, it is shown that the four-rank spinor representing the Maxwell field tensor has a $U(1)$ local gauge invariance in terms of the electric and magnetic field strengths. When applied to the magnetic field of a monopole, this formulation, via the irreducible representations condition for the gauge group, leads to a quantization condition differing by a factor 2 of the one predicted by Dirac without re…
It is shown how to break the symmetry of a Lagrangian with duality symmetry between electric and magnetic monopoles, so that at low energy, electric monopole interactions continue to be observed but magnetic monopole interactions become very highly suppressed to the point of effectively vanishing. The "zero-charge" problem of source-free electrodynamics is solved by requiring invariance under continuous, local, duality transformations, while local duality symmetry combined with local U(1)EM gauge symmetry leads naturally and surprisingly to an SU(2)D duality gauge group.
Appreciating the classical understanding of the elementary particle the "dynamical" Poincare algebra is developed. It is shown that the "dynamical" Poincare algebra and the equations of motion of particles with arbitrary spin are gauge invariant and that gauge invariance and relativistic invariance stand on equal footings. A "dynamical" non-minimal interaction is constructed explicitly and the Rarita-Schwinger equation is considered in the framework of this "dynamical" interaction.
We study the non-perturbative phenomena of Dynamical Mass Generation and Confinement by truncating at the non-perturbative level the Schwinger-Dyson equations in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics. We obtain numerical solutions for the fermion propagator in Landau gauge within the so-called rainbow approximation. A comparison with the ordinary theory without the Chern-Simons term is presented.
The problem of maintaining scale and conformal invariance in Maxwell and general N-form gauge theories away from their critical dimension d=2(N+1) is analyzed. We first exhibit the underlying group-theoretical clash between locality, gauge,Lorentz and conformal invariance require- ments. "Improved" traceless stress tensors are then constructed;each violates one of the above criteria. However, when d=N+2,there is a duality equivalence between N-form models and massless scalars. Here we show that conformal invariance is not lost,by constructing a quasilocal gauge invariant improved stress tensor. The …
The class of static solutions found by Gibbons and Wells for dilaton-electrodynamics in flat spacetime, which describe nontopological strings and walls that trap magnetic flux, is extended to a class of dynamical solutions supporting arbitrarily large, nondissipative traveling waves, using techniques previously applied to global and local topological defects. These solutions can then be used in conjunction with S-duality to obtain more general solitonic solutions for various axidilaton-Maxwell theories. As an example, a set of dynamical solutions is found for axion, dilaton, and Maxwell fields…
Starting with a simple two scalar field system coupled to a modified measure that is independent of the metric, we, first, find a Born-Infeld dynamics sector of the theory for a scalar field and second, show that the initial scale invariance of the action is dynamically broken and leads to a scale charge nonconservation, although there is still a conserved dilatation current.
The problem of gauge invariance of the physical sector of (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons quantum electrodynamics (QED$_{2+1}$) is studied. It is shown that using Proca mass term for the infrared regularization one obtains gauge-invariant fermion mass and the physical mass shell of QED$_{2+1}$ is well-defined in all orders of the perturbation theory. We are demonstrating also a class of gauges in the framework of QED$_{2+1}$, including transversal and Feynman-like ones, where the physical sector is well defined and independent of the gauge parameter.
Building on an analogy with conformal invariance, local scale transformations consistent with dynamical scaling are constructed. Two types of local scale invariance are found which act as dynamical space-time symmetries of certain non-local free field theories. Physical applications include uniaxial Lifshitz points and ageing in simple ferromagnets.
The extension of dynamical scaling to local, space-time dependent rescaling factors is investigated. For a dynamical exponent $z=2$, the corresponding invariance group is the Schrödinger group. Schrödinger invariance is shown to determine completely the two-point correlation function. The result is checked in two exactly solvable models.
Building on an analogy with conformal invariance, local scale transformations consistent with dynamical scaling are constructed. Two types of local scale invariance are found which act as dynamical space-time symmetries of certain non-local free field theories. The scaling form of two-point functions is completely fixed by the requirement of local scale invariance. These predictions are confirmed through tests in the 3D ANNNI model at its Lifshitz point and in ageing phenomena of simple ferromagnets, here studied through the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics.
Dynamical scaling arises naturally in various many-body systems far from equilibrium. After a short historical overview, the elements of possible extensions of dynamical scaling to a local scale-invariance will be introduced. Schrödinger-invariance, the most simple example of local scale-invariance, will be introduced as a dynamical symmetry in the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class of interface growth. The Lie algebra construction, its representations and the Bargman superselection rules will be combined with non-equilibrium Janssen-de Dominicis field-theory to produce explicit predictions …
Bianchi black branes (black brane solutions with homogeneous but anisotropic horizons classified by the Bianchi type) provide a simple holographic setting with lattice structures taken into account. In the case of holographic superconductor, we have a persistent current with lattices. Accordingly, we expect that in the dual gravity side, a black brane should carry some momentum along a direction of lattice structure, where translational invariance is broken. Motivated by this expectation, we consider whether---and if possible, in what circumstances---a Bianchi black brane can have momentum alo…
The scaling of the spatio-temporal response of coarsening systems is studied through simulations of the 2D and 3D Ising model with Glauber dynamics. The scaling functions agree with the prediction of local scale invariance, extending dynamical scaling to a space-time dynamical symmetry.
In their simplest form, metric-like Lagrangians for higher-spin massless fields display constrained gauge symmetries, unless auxiliary fields are introduced or locality is foregone. Specifically, in its standard incarnation, gauge invariance of Maxwell-like Lagrangians relies on parameters with vanishing divergence. We propose an alternative form of the corresponding local symmetry involving unconstrained parameters of mixed-symmetry type, described by rectangular two-row Young diagrams and entering high-derivative gauge transformations. The resulting gauge algebra appears to be reducible and …
Statistical systems displaying a strongly anisotropic or dynamical scaling behaviour are characterized by an anisotropy exponent theta or a dynamical exponent z. For a given value of theta, we construct local scale transformations which can be viewed as scale transformations with a space-time-dependent dilatation factor. Two distinct types of local scale transformations are found. The first type may describe strongly anisotropic scaling of static systems with a given value of theta, whereas the second type may describe dynamical scaling with a dynamical exponent z. Local scale transformations …
We consider a general Langevin dynamics for the one-dimensional N-particle Coulomb gas with confining potential $V$ at temperature $β$. These dynamics describe for $β=2$ the time evolution of the eigenvalues of $N\times N$ random Hermitian matrices. The equilibrium partition function -- equal to the normalization constant of the Laughlin wave function in fractional quantum Hall effect -- is known to satisfy an infinite number of constraints called Virasoro or loop constraints. We introduce here a dynamical generating function on the space of random trajectories which satisfies a large class of…
We study inflation and late-time acceleration in the expansion of the universe in non-minimal electromagnetism, in which the electromagnetic field couples to the scalar curvature function. It is shown that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal gravitational coupling of the electromagnetic field, and that large-scale magnetic fields can be generated due to the breaking of the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field through its non-minimal gravitational coupling. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that both inflation and the late-time acceleration of the universe can …
While general relativity possesses local Lorentz invariance, both canonical quantum gravity and string theory suggest that Lorentz invariance may be broken at high energies. Broken Lorentz invariance has also been postulated as an explanation for astrophysical anomalies such as the missing GZK cutoff. Therefore, we seek an effective field theory description of gravity where Lorentz invariance is broken. We will construct a candidate theory and then briefly discuss some of the implications.
Dynamical symmetries of the collisionless Boltzmann transport equation, or Vlasov equation, but under the influence of an external driving force, are derived from non-standard representations of the $2D$ conformal algebra. In the case without external forces, the symmetry of the conformally invariant transport equation is first generalised by considering the particle momentum as an independent variables. This new conformal representation can be further extended to include an external force. The construction and possible physical applications are outlined.
General Relativity receives quantum corrections relevant at cosmological distance scales from the conformal scalar degrees of freedom required by the trace anomaly of the quantum stress tensor in curved space. In the theory including the trace anomaly terms, the cosmological "constant" becomes dynamical and hence potentially dependent upon both space and time. The fluctuations of these anomaly scalars may also influence the spectrum and statistics of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Under the hypothesis that scale invariance should be promoted to full conformal invariance, an hypothesis suppor…
